Bird Flu in Cambodia
The World Health Organization is looking into two human cases of avian influenza in Cambodia after an 11-year-old girl died following an infection and after her father also tested positive for the H5N1 strain. The cases are the first known human infections of the bird flu in the Southeast Asian country since 2014. The development comes against the backdrop of a global bird flu outbreak since October 2021, including in the US where a record of more than 58 million birds have died since last February, pushing up egg prices. The flu normally spreads between sick poultry, which have a nearly 100% mortality rate when infected, and may occasionally spread from poultry to humans given sufficient exposure.

Brussels moves to ban Eurocrats from using TikTok
In an unprecedented move, the European Commission and Council of the EU have banned staff from using the Chinese social media app TikTok over security concerns, in the latest example of growing strains between Beijing and the West.
Western governments are increasingly alarmed by evidence that Chinese technology companies assist the Communist Party and its intelligence services in gathering vast amounts of data all over the world — with a particular focus on high-value political and security targets. The European Commission and the Council announced they had requested that their staff remove the TikTok app from their work and personal devices with work-related apps installed.
All Commission staff, who number about 32,000, were ordered last week to remove TikTok from their official devices and that they must also remove the app from their personal devices if they have any work-related apps installed. Alternatively, the staff members can delete work-related apps from their personal phones if they insist on keeping TikTok.

Biden nominates former MasterCard exec Ajay Banga to lead World Bank
President Joe Biden has announced that he’s nominating Ajay Banga, a former MasterCard executive, to serve as president of the World Bank. In a statement, Biden said that Banga is “uniquely equipped to lead the World Bank at this critical moment in history” and that he has a “proven track record managing people and systems, and partnering with global leaders around the world to deliver results.”
Banga has been the vice chairman at General Atlantic, a New York-based investment firm, since 2022. Prior to that, the 63-year-old was the CEO of MasterCard from 2010 to 2021.
“Raised in India, Ajay has a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing developing countries and how the World Bank can deliver on its ambitious agenda to reduce poverty and expand prosperity,’ Biden said in the statement.
