Back to square one
We’ve been here before. There is simply not enough rental accommodation to go anywhere near meeting the demand and that’s fuelling the current worker crunch.
In fact, it seems to have got worse. This time around, despite the fact we don’t have enough workers, we still don’t have enough flats, apartments or houses. And people who do have rental accommodation appear to walking a tightrope, facing rising rents or eviction, if the landlords feel they can get a better return from new tenants or Airbnb.
Rents can go up 30% or more, which means some of our best staff are now making the decision to leave Queenstown or the country, simply because they can’t find anywhere to stay within their budget. According to this week’s readers’ poll nearly 70% know someone and I personally know of three such cases, including one of our own staff, where Nelson, Perth or China have all been recipients of our loss. None of these were hospo roles btw. Even people who never thought they would have a problem are starting to worry. While landlords are at the pointy end of the crisis and some, probably too many, are taking full advantage, they’re just making the best returns they can on their investment. Greedy, yes, but it takes a fair bit of altruism, in capitalist 2023, to forego hundreds or thousands of pounds a month extra for the greater community good, or to help other businesses house staff.
And the Queenstown hobby of blaming the council doesn’t ring too true either. Under the previous mayor, Jim Boult, QLDC had a decent crack a reigning in Airbnb and short-term holiday lets, proposing a bed tax and also to reduce the number of days a property can bet let out, without resource consent, from 90 to 28. It would have been a good start but facing blowback from property owners and from the $68 billion company Airbnb, who likely would have won any court battle thanks to the permissive Resource Management Act, little was actually done. What we really need is Central Government to act. We need emergency legislation that makes it easy and cheap for developers to build rental and affordable housing stock, but gives councils the power to limit the percentage of new developments that can become holiday lets. Anything new must be a decent mix of rental property - with rents benchmarked against the living wage - affordable housing with no-Airbnb clause, then mid-range and higher-end, a good proportion of which can be Airbnb’d.
Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust is unlikely, realistically, to be able to keep pace with demand, landlords will act in their best interests, the free market won’t solve it, the council seems largely powerless, so we need Wellington to act.

Queenstown Bike Festival hits the heights
By Jess Allen
The ten-day Queenstown Bike Festival has wrapped up after a hugely successful year.
Last week, New Zealand became only the third country in the world to have a separate men’s and women’s bronze freeride mountain bike (FMB) event. It ended with a bang this past weekend with McGazza Fest, and is set to return again in 2024 after a hugely positive response.
The jam-packed schedule boasted daily events from 20-29 January. There were many highlights, however the Slopestyle event on Wednesday was a great one.
Nine women competed in the event on Wednesday and with female mountain biking on the rise and a huge pool of talent in Queenstown, it makes sense that the competition would happen here.
Emmerson Wilken, one of the event organisers, was pretty stoked with how it all came together – especially the Slopestyle.
“The night overall was pretty awesome – we had the youth start off the day and myself and probably others, were blown away at the level of the youth,” he says.
“We had a 15 and under category and they were doing some of the really big jumps that the adults were doing and tricking them. One of the kids actually pulled a backflip on the jumps there as well – that was absolutely amazing.
of things, but it was just nice to have them involved and give them a taster of what’s to come if they want to do the slopestyle thing.”
The standards were high and everyone involved brought their A-game, he says.
Emmerson has received a lot of positive feedback with a common theme of how great the festival was and how good it is for Queenstown to have something like this. All the kids’ programmes on offer were really popular, too.
Many of the events sold out or filled up – a kid came third in the 16” Pub Champ out at Cargo against adult riders. All the events were reliant on volunteer help, and the community certainly stepped up.
“The amount of volunteers that have stepped up to be part of it – we were there, marshals were there helping us set up and pack down. Just the whole community getting involved, whether being a spectator, being an athlete, everyone’s just jumped on board and embraced it.
“It’s quite fulfilling – you know, when you put in this much work, you always have that fear of almost being a bit of a failure before you start . All the feedback we’re getting, it’s been amazing and it’s been quite a cool special moment seeing it all come together, for sure.”

Choppers avoid mid-air collision

An investigation is underway after two Queenstown helicopters nearly collided in mid-air.
The choppers, operated by The Helicopter Line and Over The Top, got too close to each other during hover-taxi departure from Queenstown Airport’s southern apron area on 27 December.
The pilot of The Helicopter Line Eurocopter AS350 ZK-IDB took evasive action to avoid colliding with Over The Top’s Eurocopter EC130 ZK-IUP.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has confirmed it is investigating the incident.
“TAIC opened this inquiry on 17 January after gathering evidence following notification from the Civil Aviation Authority on 12 January 2023”, TAIC said in a statement.
Zoi continues to shine
By Paul Taylor
Wanaka snowboarding superstar Zoi Sadowski-Synnott repeated her Beijing Olympic medal haul at the prestigious X Games, winning gold in the Slopestyle and silver in Big Air.
The 21-year-old now has four Winter X Games slopestyle gold medals, winning in 2022, 2020 and 2019, along with Olympic gold and two world championship golds.
The invite-only event, held in Aspen over the weekend, ranks as one of the top competitions for extreme snowboarding and skiing.
Former Mount Aspiring College student Sadowski-Synnott, who trains at Cardrona Alpine Resort, put together a technical final run in the Slopestyle in challenging conditions, with light snow falling and flat light.
She hit a huge cab 270 gap onto the flat down and then finished with a backside 900 and a switch backside 900. The run pushed Australia’s Tess Coady into silver, with Japan’s Kokomo Murase taking bronze.
“Honestly, I can’t really believe it, it could have gone any way today, everyone is absolutely ripping, and I am so stoked for Tess and Kokomo,” SadowskiSynnott said, right after her win.
“I am proud of what we were all able to do in these conditions.”
She also went close to defending her Big Air X Games gold, but missed out by one point to Japan’s Reira Iwabuchi, who landed a historic cab triple under flip, the first triple ever landed in women’s snowboard competition.
Sadowski-Synnott landed a switch backside 1260 for the first time in the history of women’s snowboarding competition just two weeks ago at the FIS Kreischberg Big Air World Cup.
And she hit is again at the X Games in her second run, along with a right backside 1260 in her fourth run. But it wasn’t enough for gold in the discipline.
Sadowski-Synott was still overjoyed with the result, however.
“I am super happy to put down the two tricks I’ve been working on for a year and come away with the silver. I am so proud to finish behind Reira, who stomped the first triple cork in women’s competition.”
Laurie Blouin, of Canada, finished with bronze after stomping her very own triple in the run after Iwabuchi, claiming the highest single trick score of the day, a 48 out of 50.
Sadowski-Synnott now has nine X Games medals, and the two over the weekend were her 20th and 21st consecutive podium finishes in all competitions.

Touching tribute after tragic drowning
By Paul Taylor
An Australian who drowned in Lake Wakatipu at Glenorchy has been remembered as a “dependable friend” who dedicated his life to helping others.
Physiotherapist Jonny Young, of New South Wales, died on Thursday, 19 January, while attempting to rescue a young boy in trouble in the water, at the mouth of the Rees River.
It was the second drowning in near identical circumstances in the space of six days.
Friend James Chen has launched a GoFundMe appeal to help his family, which has raised nearly $6000.
“It may seem like a cliché to say that Jonny was a nice guy, but if he wasn’t that, he wouldn’t have risked and lost his life this way,” Chen writes. “Jonny was a dependable friend who always made the time to be available to others. Even in his professional life as a Physiotherapist he was dedicated to helping others.
all his fiancée, Hsu .
“He had a carefree nature indulging in many eccentric hobbies such as unicycling, origami, wing chun, making balloon animals, foldable gadgets, and an undeniable love for basketball.
“Beyond this, he was famous for his eternal love for his fiancée, Hsu.” Young was holidaying in New Zealand with Hsu when he lost his life. Chen says donations made to the GoFundMe appeal will be sent to his family to assist in covering any associated costs.
“During this time our thoughts are with Hsu, his parents, brothers and the rest of his family.”
The young boy who Young was trying to save was rescued.
The Friday before, Leroy Kaaho, 48, died near the same spot. Kaaho, also known as Linkin Kisling, was trying to save his 10-year-old son, who was eventually rescued by a member of the public.
Both deaths have been referred to the coroner. It is likely both men were pulled under by the current at a steep drop off, where water flows into the lake from the river.
Queenstown Lakes District Council has put up signs warning of the dangers and is working with other agencies to consider whether more safety equipment should be installed at the foreshore, such as life rings and flotation devices.
To donate to the fundraiser search ‘Jonny Young’ on GoFundMe.

How to declutter your life
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
We know there’s lots of programs out there about how to declutter your wardrobe, your house, your garage, yet how often don’t we think about decluttering our minds?
And how do we start if you want to declutter your mind?
And why declutter your mind?
We do a little bit of boating when we’re living in Portugal and one of the things we say when we’re on board is a tidy boat is a happy boat.
Sarah and I are really tidy and we find that this is helpful because we have 3 year old twin boys and a very busy life, I find that when things are untidy then easy tasks can feel a little overwhelming, whereas if things are tidy and shipshape, even the largest most difficult of tasks I feel I can run towards with clarity and enthusiasm.
If you feel the same way, read on!
I want to share 3 easy ways to achieve this.
Do a daily Brain dump.
Every morning grab a paper and pen and dump everything that is on your mind onto the sheet, it doesn’t matter if it is personal, holiday plans or work, just get it out there, out of your mind and onto the sheet.
Now go through each one and decide if it needs any action or does it need crossing through as it is just clutter, clogging up your grey matter?
Most of what we worry about is not important and in the future, this list allows you to see it for what it is, important or just clutter.
Lastly throughout your day ask yourself this question, “Is this thought important or just clutter?”
If the answer is clutter then imagine the thought being screwed up into a tiny ball and thrown into the bin, the clutter bin where thoughts that don’t serve us live.

Vape sellers pass the test
By Paul Taylor
Vape sellers in Queenstown and across Central Otago have passed the don’t-sell-to-minors test with flying colours.
Health officials sent a minor into 19 stores across the region in early January. Not one of them sold a product to the youngster.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled with this outcome and hope our community will be reassured that the majority of retailers are not selling to minors,” says Stephanie Bekhuis-Pay, Smokefree Enforcement Officer for Te Whatu Ora –Health New Zealand.
Controlled purchase operations are carried out approximately every eight to 12 weeks and involve a minor entering a retail outlet and asking to be sold a vaping or tobacco product.
They are carried out more regularly when the retailer has been identified as selling vaping or tobacco products to a minor.
The National Public Health Service (NPHS) also runs education training sessions with tobacco and vaping retailers, so that they are aware of what IDs are accepted in New Zealand and talk through staff training systems for ensuring all staff members are aware of their obligations.
“At the end of the day, retailers selling age restricted goods should always ask for and check ID. It’s that simple,” says Bekhuis-Pay.
“It’s especially important to empower employees, especially younger employees, to feel comfortable and confident to ask for ID.”
As well as Queenstown, the CPO visited stores in Wanaka, Hawea, and Cromwell.
While the retailers are following the rules, vapers themselves could do with a reminder about airport restrictions.
RNZ reported that the number of vapes being confiscated from people’s checked luggage at New Zealand airports over the past year has quadrupled.
Almost 10,000 vapes had to be removed by Aviation Security in 2022vapes, e-cigarettes, power banks and wireless Bluetooth headphones must be put in carry-on bags and not checked-in baggage due to the batteries they contain, which can explode, catch fire or leak caustic chemicals.
Queenstown Airport was third on the list of most-confiscated vapes, behind Auckland top and Wellington second.

TECHNOLOGY
Some cool Google search features you could be using
Google’s Search function isn’t limited to just finding websites. You can use the same search box to perform calculations, find flight information, and even find specific file types. Here are a few lesser-known features of Google Search that you should consider.
Performing calculations
Google Search can be used to perform both basic and complex calculations. This eliminates the need to use the calculator app on your phone or desktop. To use it, simply enter your formula in the search box, and hit Enter e.g. 16% of 138
View flight status
Google Search lets you track your flights by simply using your flight number as the tracking number. For example, to find details about Qantas flight QF 122, all you have to do is enter the following on Google
You’ll see the flight’s departure and arrival times, current location, gate information, etc.
Find Products in a Specific Price Range
Google makes it super easy to find any product you want, and using the site’s price filter, you can make getting to the exact item you need even easier. This filter lets you find only the products that fall in or around your price range. For example, if you’re looking for portable chargers in the price range of $50$100, you’d enter the following on Google: portable chargers $50-$100
Your search results will include products that are in or around your specified price range.
Find nearby places
If you want to find something, say a cafe, nearby. If so, use Google’s local search to find relevant listings near your location. For example, to find all cafes around you, type the following on Google Search: Cafe near me.
It’ll use your device’s current location to suggest you places. You can use this method to find restrooms, service stations, stores, and more. Particularly handy when you are in a town you aren’t familiar with
Get word definitions
Google Search can act as a dictionary, allowing you to find the definition for any word you enter. It displays the various meanings of your word as well as how to use that word in a sentence.
You can use it by entering the following in the search box. Here define weird to find the definition of.
Find specific file types
If you’re looking for something that’s in a specific file format, say a sample resume in PDF, you can make use of Google’s file type search to find your specified files.
For example, to retrieve all PDFs that are sample resumes, enter the following on Google:
Sample resume filetype:pdf
Here, feel free to replace “pdf” with any file format you’re looking for. Track deliveries
Many parcel delivery companies let you track your shipments right from Google’s search box. To use this feature, all you have to do is type in your parcel tracking number on Google and you’ll find your shipment’s location. Note that your shipment tracking information is provided by your courier company.
View real-time stock prices
You can view the real-time price of your specified stocks. To use this method, enter your stock’s ticker symbol on Google and it’ll tell you the price. For example, enter the following for the Air NZ stock:
Those are some of the interesting uses of Google Search that we think you should be using to make your life a bit easier. Happy Googling

Academics oppose Tarras airport plan
By Paul Taylor
Eleven of New Zealand’s leading academics have written an open letter to business leaders and politicians stating that the proposed new international airport in Central Otago should not proceed.
Christchurch International Airport Ltd plans to build a new airport in Tarras, which would rival Queenstown Airport. Unlike Queenstown, it would be able to land wide-bodied jets.
The letter, sent on Tuesday, has been signed by professors from Otago, Canterbury, Lincoln, Victoria, Massey and Auckland Universities. Signatories include Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond and Professor Shaun Hendy.
The academics, who have expertise in the fields of business, economics, climate science, sustainability, Maori and indigenous studies, tourism, the environment, agriculture, and policy studies, outline multiple reasons why the airport proposal should be shelved.
These include the “significant environmental, social, cultural and economic as well as political and reputational consequences” of failing to reduce carbon emissions by building a new airport during a climate emergency.
They also point to the need to move “away from the volume-based growth approach” to tourism which “underpins the airport proposal”, and highlight significant concern around the airline industry talking of achieving “zero carbon aviation” based on technologies which currently do not exist. The letter also raises concerns about negative impacts on Central Otago’s environment, flora and fauna, strain on regional infrastructure, impact on local and regional communities, wider economic consequences, intergenerational impacts and the wellbeing of those living locally.
James Higham, Professor of Sustainable Tourism at the University of Otago, brought the group together, and says that he and his peers strongly oppose the airport proposal.
“Given the available research and data - and there is plenty of it - it makes no sense whatsoever to build a new airport at Tarras - or anywhere else in New Zealand for that matter.”
He says that to do so “would be wrong.”
The group has formed under the moniker of ‘Informed Leaders”, as they are encouraging decision-makers to factor in relevant research.
“Decisions to proceed with projects like this with the potential for significant, intergenerational impacts should not be made in isolation by individual companies”, he said.
“The available research and data should be factored in, discussed openly with stakeholders and key communities.”
He says that he and others are calling for a national conversation about new airports.
The letter was sent to the board of Christchurch Airport, shareholders Christchurch City Council, central government, and Christchurch Community Boards, the Central Otago District Council and the Otago Regional Council. It can be read at www.informedleaders.com.
Professor Higham says that the group is now working on a curated index of existing, relevant research that should inform the wider conversation. CAIL Project Director Michael Singleton says he welcomes perspectives but any call to stop the project before its benefits and impacts can be properly assessed is premature.
“We believe a new airport can fit within New Zealand’s emissions targets and meet the challenges posed by a changing climate,” Singleton says. “We remain committed to fully exploring that so authorities can make informed decisions around having the right infrastructure in the right place for that future.”
Singleton says New Zealand has robust regulatory frameworks that scrutinise infrastructure proposals.
“No project, including our own, is likely to be given approval if it fails to demonstrate how it will address its impacts and fit into a low emissions future.”
The researchers make a number of assumptions on how close low emission aviation is, he says.
“We have a more optimistic view. For example, both Air New Zealand and Sounds Air are planning to have zero emission flights within this decade. For long-term projects like ours – now is the time to plan for that.”
Airport infrastructure in Central Otago, which includes Queenstown and Wanaka, is reaching its capacity, he says, and a long-term solution must be found “to ensure the forecast demands of the region can be met in the most effective way.”
He says researchers continue to wrongly assume the plans are driven “solely” by long haul tourism.
“That is not and never has been the case. Airports need to be able to serve a range of people from local residents, visitors, friends and family, exporters of goods and services (including education). Our project aims to do that. Even pre-Covid less than 9% of passengers that arrived at Christchurch Airport arrived on ‘long haul’ flights.”
“Building an airport that can enable airlines to use all their current and future aircraft types and technologies makes sense. For example, widebody planes are not just used for long-haul tourism routes, they are used on short-haul too.”

New Wakatipu High School principal takes the reins
By Sue Fea
New Wakatipu High School principal Oded Nathan is all about preparing students for “their future, rather than our past” and is well aware of the changing global landscape they’re heading into.
However, after 13 years with the school, deputy principal for more than 11 of them, Californian-raised Oded is up for the challenge.
He was officially welcomed in a moving Mihi whakatau (Maori welcome ) on Thursday (January 26) by school staff, the Ministry of Education, Wakatipu school principals and other members of the Queenstown community, including Maori families with longstanding links to the school. “I’ve been here since 2010 but it was really special to have such a warm welcome to this new position,” says Oded.
Passionate about education, mathematics, sport and developing great citizens, Oded hails from a strong family education and teaching heritage and knew he wanted to teach from the age of 13. “I remember tutoring my classmates and team-mates at high school.” After studying maths and gaining a teaching diploma at UCLA he worked with a programme bringing highly-qualified maths teachers into inner city Los Angeles schools where he taught mathematics bilingually in English and Spanish.
A Millennium New Year adventure in 1999 saw him fall in love with New Zealand, teaching at Cashmere High School in Christchurch until 2009, where he was quickly promoted to dean and deputy principal.
A move to Queenstown landed him at Wakatipu High School in 2010 where within a year he was dean and head of maths, and promoted to deputy principal soon after former principal Steve Hall arrived in 2012. For the past three years Oded’s been associate principal at the school and heavily involved in its leadership decisions, as well as having an acting principal role for three months in 2019.
When he arrived it was a Year 7 – 13 school with a roll of just around 700 students. It’s now Year 9 – 13 on the new Frankton site with over 1300 students.
While technology has had a big impact on education and society, Oded says the majority of Wakatipu High students are very involved in extra and co-curricular activities. “Ultimately, you want young people to be happy, connected and developing into good citizens that can contribute positively to society,” he says.
“I think our kids have been really resilient and remarkable in this everchanging world and we’ve achieved a good balance.”
“We want students to be able to pursue their passions and have as many options available to them as possible. High school is just one step in their journey and we need to prepare them as best we can for life beyond high school.”
An old statistic already shows the average number of careers in a lifetime will be eight and for our current generations that will probably be more, says Oded. “Some say that half the jobs that exist today won’t tomorrow and half the jobs that exist tomorrow don’t exist today.”
“It’s important that students not only acquire the necessary knowledge and skills like numeracy and literacy, but other competencies such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and self-management,” he says. Compassion and empathy are also very important.
While the principal often gets the kudos a lot for those achievements they’re the product of a team effort. “So moving forward if any things are done differently that won’t be just me, there’ll be a whole team approach behind that.”
He feels chuffed to have been part of that team approach to date which is now starting to produce wonderful fruit. Despite Covid and new building disruptions to learning, Wakatipu High School students achieved outstanding results in 2022, bucking national trends, he says.
Interim results showed that 78 percent of Year 13 students achieved University Entrance in 2022, and our hope is that as the final results come in that percentage will be 80 percent. “As a school, our UE results from 2022 will likely place us near the top of all co-educational schools in the country.” “At NCEA Level 2 the school had a 94 percent pass rate, which is very high and we also had excellent pass and endorsement rates at Level 1, 2 and 3,” he says.
“One key metric for us is the percentage of Year 8 students in the basin that come to WHS to enter Year 9, and at this point, it looks like that will be 95 percent – the highest it’s been since at least 2011,” says Oded.
A major concern for the kids in his job transition is that Mr Nathan, a passionate basketballer and sportsman, will stay on as one of the school’s basketball coaches. He’s hoping he can, but “we’ll see”, he grins.
Oded’s wife, Laura, is also director of sport at the school and heavily involved in sport.

Waitangi Day returns to Queenstown Gardens
by Jessica Allen
Tahuna’s Waitangi Day celebrations will this year return to Queenstown Gardens after the past couple of years of moving around to different spots. The 2023 event has a strong focus on whanau and will include live music, Kapa Haka, kai, and activities for tamariki.
Mana Tahuna and QLDC have collaborated to bring this event to the Gardens, and have been supported by the Webster whanau, who started the event over 20 years ago with the help of family, friends and the community. Mana Tahuna is a charitable trust here in Queenstown that came about to support the Maori/Pasifika community in post-Covid time.
Since its first inception, the event has changed over the years, and in more recent times has become a bit more of big party rather than the all-inclusive day to commemorate Waitangi Day. This year’s focus will move on from previous iterations of the event.
“This is our first one as Mana Tahuna and we are working with the QLDC, which again will be the first time we’ve worked together on a Waitangi Day event. My mum was actually the one who started it over 20 years ago. Over the years we had a lot more involvement from other people and in the last seven years, it’s kind of taken a turn into something else that we didn’t really envision for Waitangi Day.
“It was our opportunity this year for Mana Tahuna to pick the ball back up and use it to kind of take it back to the roots and back to how we want to commemorate the day, and make sure that’s what we’re doing. We’ve got live music – we have five different acts/live music going on. We’ve got Charles Gibson, Ned and Pearly, Beauties and the Beast, Castle Rock acoustic, Herbs acoustic and also we have DJ Julio, or Jules, who’s going to finish off the afternoon. Definitely live music happening, just kind of keeping away from the DJ vibes,” says Ebony Webster, Mana Tahuna COO.
The stage will be set up at the rotunda, which is where the event will be based throughout the day. Everyone is encouraged to come by and bring their own food or a bit of a picnic to relax in the park and commemorate Waitangi Day.
“We’ve got a lot of community groups or whanau that are fundraising for different kinds of Kaupapa around the community, they’re coming to
do fundraising stores – food and we’re got a few arts and crafts where they’re selling poi, and we’ll do Moko for kids. Bring food and just enjoy the day – hopefully it’s a beautiful day – and the music.”
Waitangi Day in the Gardens will be in Queenstown Gardens on Monday 6 February and is a free familyfriendly event. You can find out more information or stay up to date by following Mana Tahuna on Facebook, or heading to the Facebook event at www.facebook.com/events/987478445546309

First Thursdays February
Queenstown’s favourite late night art crawl
First Thursdays Queenstown is a free community event that celebrates the diversity of arts and culture in Queenstown. This Thursday 2 February join in for a fun and friendly art crawl where you choose the route and the amount of time you spent at each exhibition.
Bringing together Starkwhite, Milford Galleries, Romer, Artbay, and Lightworx, First Thursdays seeks to connect people with creativity across our town centre. Based around Earl Street and Marine Parade, the evening event sees five leading art galleries offer exhibitions and talks during a special late-night opening from 5–7pm. Maps are available at the participating galleries and on the First Thursdays Queenstown instagram – @firstthursdaysqt – and facebook pages. Make sure to take note of the talk offered this month and enjoy a glass of the region’s best thanks to Akarua Winery as you take in the art works.
February brings new exhibitions to Queenstown including sculpture by Trevor Askin at Artbay. Making work for over 40 years using the lost wax casting method, Askin’s sculptures are created in his South Island studio and foundry. His is a free and flowing approach to abstracted sculpture which the artist terms ‘curvilinear’, describing how the bronze appears to be folded and rounded. A keen nature observer, Askin is an amateur ornithologist and many of his bronze works capture the intricacies of our natural environment. Many will recognise Trevor’s work from Queenstown Gardens, where his large sculpture The Good Book was unveiled in November 2022 by the Lakes District Arts Trust. Head to Artbay for Trevor Askin’s artist talk at 5.30pm during First Thursdays. For its February exhibition Starkwhite brings the work of Australian artist Jonny Niesche to Queenstown, fresh from his acclaimed appearance at the Singapore Art Fair. Niesche reduces painting and sculpture to their most fundamental forms: colour, light and perception. His abstract compositions ooze from the centre outwards in swathes of carefully rendered pastel hues. Instead of seeing his works as painting or sculpture, the artist sees them as ‘image-objects,’ shifting between the two disciplines. Rich with seductive urban allure, Niesche’s lightboxes and paintings appear to float and pulsate, changing from fixed images to dynamic events.
Milford Galleries presents a group exhibition titled 9A that brings fresh faces alongside internationally significant artists Lisa Reihana and Yuki Kihara to Queenstown. New gallery artist Amanda Gruenwald will exhibit for the first time, her paintings ripe with rich colours seemingly
poured over the canvas. Also part of the exhibition are sculptural works by ceramist Mark Mitchell. These new art works continue the artist’s restrained use of colour and line, but offer movement via twists and turns as the sculpture reaches upwards from a granite base. Also participating in First Thursdays Queenstown are Romer Gallery, where Stephan Romer’s large scale landscape photography is exhibited, and Lightworx, offering innovative combinations of light, colour and space.
First Thursdays Queenstown returns on Thursday 2 February. Artist Talk: Trevor Askin at 5.30pm at Artbay, Marine Parade.

Alan Brady, Central Otago wine industry pioneer pouring his current brand Wild Irishman
They may seem soft and furry with their little bunny ears bobbing about our district, but for most people the cutesy reputation of the rabbit has long since worn thin.
Rabbits are a destructive force and it seems no matter what measures are implemented to try and keep their ever expanding populations under control they just keep breeding more because, well… they’re rabbits!
Residents in many subdivisions around the Wakatipu and Wanaka have noticed a remarkable increase in the number of rabbits taking over their streets, backyards and neighbourhood reserves. Not only are they digging burrows, breaking through barricades to annihilate green foliage in vegetable gardens, but quite cheekily taking over lush green, well-watered lawns. Numbers have skyrocketed in the past few years with one Peninsula Bay resident in Wanaka saying they double or quadruple there every few months. “The rabbit problem is indeed a crisis. They’re spreading everywhere,” he says. “They used to be all around our area, but not in the neighbourhood like they are now.” Community feedback in Wanaka has even suggested going back to paying shooters $1 for a rabbit skin as in years gone by, but with safety issues prohibiting shooting in residential areas that’s not possible. In Kelvin Heights they’re roaming the streets at night in larger numbers, and the sportsfield below Shotover Country is always amassed with rabbit poo, residents say. In parts of the district they’re described as a “moving landscape”.
Newly-established native trees and plants are also a target for rabbits.
Farmers in the area say it’s not the worst season they’ve seen and they’re able to keep the rabbit populations under control by shooting several a day. However, they say with the dry conditions and people watering lawns and gardens residential areas will be like a little oasis, attracting the rabbits.
Otago Regional councillor and Central Otago farmer Gary Kelliher says he’s long been an advocate for returning to something similar to the old Rabbit Board structure, disbanded by the government in 1989. Pest control was handed to

what were then newly-formed regional councils. “I’ve yet to be convinced that (structure) is not the best idea. I think they felt it was too costly so now it’s up to the individual landowners to manage rabbits,” says Gary. “But they’re taking over residential areas now and the tools in built up areas are very, very limited,” he says. Guns aren’t permitted, bait laid and traps set may affect neighbourhood cats and dogs, so that narrows the options.
Farmers are doing their best despite a tough season, he says.
“I know rabbit numbers are high in the Wakatipu. It’s within the areas that ORC has targeted for more of a concerted effort. I believe the territorial councils have a responsibility to do more than they’re doing,” says Gary. “I think it’s time they upped their game. We need regular, ongoing maintenance programmes.” The fact that rabbits are moving into residential areas in large numbers is a sign how elevated the problem is, he says. Possum numbers are also on the increase.
However, a Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesman highlights a detailed professional night shoot, baiting, pellet and fencing programme in targeted areas laid out on the council website. The council is also about to start planning its winter pest control programme, which will be developed in conjunction with other landowners, ORC and DOC, he says.
Professional night shoots are also carried out
regularly on open space green areas at Jack’s Point where Residential Precinct Committee chair, former district mayor Clive Geddes, says there’s been a major problem for almost three years. “The shoots net 50 to 100 rabbits, no trouble, and two months later we get the same amount again.”
“The number of rabbits in the district has grown enormously in the last five years and they’ve spread into residential areas where they can’t be shot, trapped or poisoned,” says Clive. “These explosions happen on a cyclical basis and only something like rabbit calicivirus will get rid of them.”
Clive doesn’t believe we can rid the district of rabbits through “bureaucratic structure” like rabbit boards though. Various measures have been tried but he says it’s almost impossible to get a consensus. “It’s up to the individual property owner.”
Queenstown Golf Club continues to hire a contractor to do well publicised, contractor night shoots also. Kelvin Heights greenkeeper Ian Douglas says that nets 15 to 20 a night every four to six weeks. “Six years ago it was much worse - dreadful. The first two nights they shot about 500 a night,” says Ian. “But they’re on the increase again. I can see that.” He still picks up some rabbits off the golf course that have died of calicivirus, but it’s been a good season for breeding, he says.

My Life Story
MARY STAMERS-SMITH ON PROBATION – DON’T MESS WITH MARY
Queenstown’s probation officer for almost 20 years, Mary Stamers-Smith was not only highly respected by the judiciary, but also by her clients. Her choice of career – social work, may have been a shock and a first for her St Margaret’s Girls College headmistress in Christchurch, but Mary, a deputy head prefect, had read a book inspiring her and there was no stopping her.
Mary started her sociology and psychology studies (BA) in 1964 – the year she saw The Beatles perform in Christchurch Square. “The 60s were great. We were beatniks for the first two years – quite hippy, wearing sloppy jerseys and black tight stockings.” However, that changed in her third year when she was granted a twoyear social work traineeship, while still attending lectures down the road. “Then I had to appear at lectures in a formal welfare office skirt.” She had placements with Child Welfare and the Psychological Service for children with learning, social and behavioural difficulties, before the Probation Service – the focus of her career. Her third year at uni year Mary met husband of 54 years, Simon Stamers-Smith, retired Queenstown lawyer and former district councillor. “He took me to a Dr Zhivago movie and on the drive home to Merivale it was snowing so he suggested a walk in Elmwood Park,” says Mary. Ever the romantic, he swept her off her feet.
“Everybody went to London when they graduated and I wanted to stay with Simon, but he said, ‘If we get married without you travelling you’ll be banging pots around the kitchen because you didn’t go’.” She sailed to England with her best friend and her adventures included naively travelling to the former Soviet Union in a Russian ship with the British Communist Party by mistake. Her stop on the flight home, also naively, included
three nights in Beirut, where she befriended a Sheik, who took her on tour in his private royal limousine.
In the nine months they were apart she and Simon wrote each other 90 letters, Simon meeting her at the airport, ring in hand. They married two months later.
Mary had been plunged deep into her first probation officer role in Christchurch. “Fresh from a private girls’ school, I was dealing with some pretty horrific cases involving things that were never mentioned back then,” she says. “I learned the hard way.”
Once married she worked as a medical social worker at Dunedin Hospital, where she challenged conservative thinking by older medical professionals, encouraging them to look beyond surgical needs to what was going on at home. Pregnant with their son, they moved back to Christchurch where their two daughters followed – three kids under three. She still found time to give back to the community on school committees and chairing community organisations, like the St Margaret’s Endowment Fund, which she led for 10 years.
Mary joined women to be reckoned with, politician Ann Hercus and sister in law, journalist Anne Hargreaves managing
The Society for Research on Women, which went national. “I wasn’t burning my bras but I thought women were fantastically underrated,” she says. In her career she became first in NZ to write court probation reports on contract, visiting and interviewing prisoners in the cells at Christchurch Remand Prison amid mass whistles.
Moving to Christchurch in 1985, the StamersSmith’s Dalefield home burnt down a month after moving in and a week after the Coronet Peak base building fire. Not a good start, but Mary soon scored a job as sole Queenstown probation officer working out of the old District Courthouse. She did that for 18 years, managing offenders on parole from all over NZ, many of whom just wanted to come to ‘party town’.
It was unnerving at times managing offenders on parole from all over NZ, some who’d committed serious crimes.
“I had an alarm button under my desk and if I pushed it the police would come running from around the corner. I never used it once,” she says. She never felt threatened, always establishing a rapport of trust with the offenders. “Mostly ‘my crims’ were young people who’d themselves been dealt a cruel blow in life. I believe in respecting people whatever their deeds were. People aren’t born evil. They’re subjected to it.”
The respect was mutual. A local heroin addict ended up in her office for nicking poppies from Millbrook and Speargrass Flat gardens. “I said, ‘Look mate, you’re nearly on my territory (Littles Road) and you’ll get a very bad probation report if you come there.’ He said, ‘Geez Mary, the crims would be right onto me if I did anything to you!’” High honour and praise from Judge Noel Walsh farewelling Mary off to retirement in 2005 made it all worthwhile.
Mary’s helped form, and served on, a myriad of local community organisations, including Queenstown’s Citizens Advice Bureau in 1987 –its first president, and most enjoyably, founding U3A – University of the Third Age locally in 2009 for local retirees eager to learn.

Wanaka man warns of scams
By Wanaka App
A Wanaka man who lost $40,000 in an online scam has warned that it “can happen to anyone”.
Jason Clarke was the victim of what police said was a sophisticated operation by a fake bitcoin trading company.
“I have been tricked and taken advantage of by investing my money into a legitimate company that has been hacked,” he said.
Jason has laid a complaint with the Serious Fraud Office and has set up a Givealittle campaign asking locals to help him recover the money he lost with donations.
He said he wanted to raise awareness following what happened to him, which is part of a concerning uptick in the success of online scams.
New Zealanders lost a record $9M to internet scams in the last quarter of 2022.
“Even the most careful people… can be caught out,” Jason warned. Most people lost between $100 and $500 but there were 12 reports of losses of more than seven figures during the period, the government’s cyber security agency CERT NZ said.
The police have provided advice for for the public on a wide range of scams, including ‘romance’ scams, cold calling scams, ‘business email compromise’, work from home scams offering easy money, and bogus investment opportunities.
Police say investment scams often promise very high returns with little risk to your initial investment.
Investment opportunities can take the form of well performing company shares/futures/binary options or an initial coin offering for an emerging cryptocurrency.
Signs of a scam include:
• You’re contacted out of the blue with the investment offer either by email or phone call
• You discover or are directed to a professional looking website that makes them look authentic however it is difficult to find out their physical address and independently verify if they are registered as a financial service provider or broker
• You’re pressured into making rushed decisions due to the incredible potential for making profit being time critical therefore giving you no time to consider the investment offer.
• Never take up offers of investments from on-the-spot from cold calls. To make safe investments look at the Financial Market Authority website for news and alerts on businesses.
Find more information on how to keep safe online, or to report suspected scams, at netsafe.org.nz.
If you believe you or someone else has been scammed, call the police on 105.

COMMUNITY NOTES
The DISHrupt Working Group
by Lucy Deuble
Initially launched in 2018, DISHrupt was an idea born out of Sustainable Queenstown’s passion to create Zero Waste Events. Events where peoples’ habits can be broken, smarter decisions can be made, and more importantly spaces where food and beverages can be enjoyed and shared without rubbish bins being full of single use waste. By offering reusable plates, cups and cutlery for hire with the added bonus of a team of DISHrupters to wash the dishes and ensure they are kept in circulation for the event, DISHrupt means less waste at events here in the Queenstown Lakes.
DISHrupt has played a pivotal role in the LUMA Light Festival since 2018 and has been championed at many smaller events including the Lake Hayes and Wanaka A&P show. The success of these partnerships has demonstrated that DISHrupt can make an incredible impact by reducing event waste from ending up in landfill.
Since 2020, DISHrupt has diverted over 18,000 single use serveware items from landfill. This is no small feat, considering the crippling effect covid had on the event industry from 2020-2022. However, in order to create lasting change in our community; the idea, process and administration of the initiative requires nurturing so it can grow seamlessly and impactfully.
Hence, the idea to create a DISHrupt working group was born. Now we are calling passionate changemakersSustainable Queenstown is putting together a working group of enthusiastic waste minimisation superheroes to take DISHrupt to the next level!
DISHrupt can be bigger than we’re capable of managing and delivering as a volunteer charity, so we are looking for people with big ideas that can see the potential in DISHrupt and are willing to put those ideas into action.
Within this working group, you will be responsible for leading DISHrupt into the future with your ideas for its use, and also its actionable outcomes. The group will be responsible for managing DISHrupt’s hire operation as it currently stands, including replying to emails, managing inventory and maintaining the brand new operational partnership with Chunky.
Sustainable Queenstown will have a trustee from the board to mentor the group through the process and will act as your sounding board for ideas, as well as being able to provide a wealth of knowledge and information on what has already been tried and tested. We encourage people from all walks of life to apply - ideally you have experience in project management, strategic innovation and planning. To express your interest and find out more info about a position within the group, please email Lucy at hellodishrupt@gmail.com with a bit about yourself and why you’d be a great addition to the team. This is an amazing opportunity for someone looking to start their journey in sustainability led community action, with the added benefit of already having a presence and success

Research- Women skipping regular eye check raising fears of more sinister health outcomes later
Optometrists across the country are concerned that women are not looking after their eye health and dismissing minor problems or irritations that could result in a more sinister health diagnosis if left untreated.
This comes after new research has revealed that 89% of women experience an issue with their eye, but nearly a quarter of those (23%) said they didn’t see an optometrist or a healthcare professional and just waited for it to go away on its own.
The Queenstown findings included:
• 52% were unaware that hormones and age can impact eye health in women.
• The most common issues that women in Queenstown have experienced with their eyes are dry eyes (39%), conjunctivitis (33%) and a problem with seeing things up close/reading (33%)
Specsavers, who conducted the research offer free eye check-ups to kiwis under the age of 16 every two years. Those with government issued Community Services Cards can also access a range of subsidised services and products while those with Southern Cross health insurance are eligible for half price eye-tests, and AA members can access those eye-tests for free. There is a Specsavers at Remarkables Park Town Centre Frankton.

Climate Reference Group seeks new members
People with the drive and insight to help address local effects of climate change are invited to join QLDC’s independent Climate Reference Group. The CRG has been advising Council on climate and biodiversity action since August 2020. It has been instrumental in delivering projects, embedding climate action into Council planning, and developing the Queenstown Lakes Climate and Biodiversity Plan 2022-25.
The vacancies had arisen as a result of former Chairperson Bridget Legnavsky moving overseas, and Mayor Glyn Lewers’ decision to make the group fully independent by stepping down three QLDC elected members and one Otago Regional Councillor.
“This is a significant opportunity for applicants to join eight other like-minded individuals who collectively provide expert advice to help guide Council’s response to the huge climate and ecological challenges we all face. We strongly encourage those who know of potential candidates to talk to them about applying,” QLDC Climate Action Programme Manager Katherine Durman said.
Applications can be made via a form on the QLDC website. The closing date is Sunday 12 February.

Arrowtown hosts Burns Supper and Ceilidh
This past Saturday Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall was transformed into a wee Scottish town as 200 people headed out to celebrate Burns Night. The event, which is a celebration of the 1700’s poet Robert Burns included haggis, poetry reading, a band, traditional dance and drinks – a dram or two was certainly had. The celebration is set to return again in 2024.
Burns Night is a Scottish celebration on 25 January (the poet’s birthday) that traditionally includes eating haggis, drinking whisky, reciting some of Robert Burns’ poems and songs, as well as some dancing. Burns is a bit of a Scottish national treasure and is widely regarded as the poet of Scotland. In addition to poetry, he also wrote and performed many folk songs.
By Jess Allen
“We had the traditional format of a Burns Supper, which was an introduction, soup course, and some spoken word and poetry – some of it written for the event and some of it was old poetry and songs written by Burns himself. Then the haggis came in and got murdered, ceremoniously, by a very colourful character called Ross. The tables were cleared which opened up the dancefloor. The Hair of the Dog, which is probably New Zealand’s best Ceilidh band, played. They are hopefully going into partnership with me next year,” says Chris.
back. A lot of hard work goes on to pull together an event for 200 people.
“The reward is there and I know that a lot of people have enjoyed themselves – that’s the reward. I’m not doing this for any reason other than trying to get an event going that’s sustainable. Burns Night is quite a niche thing, unless you’ve been to one you don’t know what it’s all about. If you don’t know the Scots language, you may not appreciate all the spoken words, so we did some subtitles. “Nothing went wrong, which was great and everyone that was working also had fun. It was an all-round success,” says Chris.
Mark your diaries now – the Burns Night celebrations will return next year. In the meantime, Queenstown is home to a large Scottish contingency and there’s several community groups. You can find more info at the Queenstown Lakes District Council Community Connect page or by having a bit of a Google.
Chris Hutton, who originally hails from Edinburgh, has been working hard behind the scenes and organised this year’s celebrations in Arrowtown. Many hands helped to make light work as Chris was assisted by many within the community –he was thrilled that the event went off without a hitch. Images credit: Le Tans Photography
Chris started the event last year after Covid, pulling it together in just 8 weeks – he wanted to have a bit of fun and a dance after all the lockdowns. It was hugely successful and they almost ran out of whisky – something they were well-prepared for this year. Chris works hard on the event simply for people to have a good time and half the proceeds are donated to The Kiwi Kit Community Trust. They are a charitable trust that creates programmes and projects to support migrants, to connect the community and give
