Five years of Yonder, how the hell did we get here? Naive, ambitious and driven, we’ve never stopped learning along the way. And who’d have foreseen this journey we’ve had down the B roads?
Having lived in Queenstown for 15 years, we always wanted to help drive more culture, soul and community into this special little town. The goal was to create a Food & Beverage hub for locals whilst housing a variety of live performing arts. The love of music and providing good times for all, coined our tagline, “Come as you are” (cheers Kurt), but then came the covid

it has always been our goal to employ only the most incredible number of rad humans. This focus ensured we had a solid crew that went above and beyond to support each other during the most challenging times. Now during crippling industry-wide staff shortages, they continue to unite for each other, and strive for the experience that we’re seeking to provide. We’re seeing crazy numbers, whilst operating with nearly half the number of staff pre-COVID. Without a beautiful team and brilliant locals, this wouldn’t be possible. So, thank you to our incredible people, past and present.

New enzymes, fewer dimes but good times
We conceptualised Yonder in 2015 after I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Whilst the diagnosis undeniably sucked, we got on the front foot with a healthier lifestyle and a renewed lease on life. However, looking for accessible and healthy places to eat across the world in 2014, we found it polarising. We just wanted to create a place where no matter your dietary preference or limitations, you were welcome to come together and have a bloody good time. It was to be a celebration of socialising, friendship and just great food.

Thecurveball.divisiveness and separation that Covid caused, forced communities apart and was the antithesis of what we were trying to achieve. Even our tagline was no longer valid! With our fifth birthday fast approaching, I’ve been reflecting on the insane journey we’ve had. We couldn’t do this if it weren’t for great people. To thank all those who supported us through the rough lines and the good times, this Friday, we’re hosting two hours of free coffee, and a free evening of local art, comedy, music and snacks. We’d love to see you!

After a week of heavy campaigning, Queenstown Lakes voters should now have a much clearer picture of the six people vying to be mayor.
He’s well attuned to the limitations of what council can do. But he will struggle if voters decide they are so fed up with the work of the current council, the cones, airports, Lakeview and the rest, that they want change. Mitchell, 58, is the candidate who represents change. “We need to reinvent Queenstown Lakes District Council” was one of his opening remarks at the Catalyst forum. He sees the council’s problems as a crisis, with a complete lack of trust from the community.
The former lawyer and #MeToo advocate turned up the enthusiasm to 11 for the forums, addressing the audience directly, although it felt too rehearsed at Wensley, times.
“I’m not a politician, my calendar does not boast of appointments with ministers, my calendar reflects more community work at grassroots level, more school activities.”
She says her community is more likely to form a WhatsApp group for efficient pick-ups and drop offs, rather than dream of electric cars solving their problems.
37, said she’s running because she wants a better future for children.
Shand gave a monotone, slightly incoherent but sometimes funny performance, his answer for creating greater transparency at council was to remove the doors in the council offices, which perhaps won’t go far to garner votes.

Well, only four of them really got much exposure.
“Our region is on a knife’s edge, our transportation, housing and health models are broken. More of the same is not going to fix it. Big thinking and even bigger action are what’s needed.”
Al Angus and Daniel Shand were both on stage with them at the Chamber event, but Angus dramatically walked off early on. He was not allowed to poll the audience on Three Waters, but Wensley was on tourism numbers.
His key message was the need to tackle growth and, if elected, he plans a rapid review of the district plan, and also the Lakeview contract.
he won’t appeal to voters who see his plans for change as too radical and expensive, re-doing years of council work. His standing as a Labour Party candidate in the last general election could also hurt his Neetacampaign.Shetty, 48, was a surprise candidate for mayor, but also performed well at the forums, particularly when answering questions on the fly from Catalyst moderator David Williams and Wakatipu High School students.
The other four, generally regarded as leading the race, demonstrated they are all very different candidates, with positives and negatives, depending on your Servingposition.district councillor Glyn Lewers, 44, will represent the status quo for many, the most likely to keep the council on its current path, although he emphasised the need to reconnect with the public and build social Hisinfrastructure.majorvictory was to demonstrate his detailed knowledge and experience in the nitty gritty of council work. Some of his best moments were when he challenged Mitchell and Wensley on their grand plans.
That grassroots approach categorised many of her answers during the forums. But, while she has experience working for QLDC, the lack of experience as a politician, for such a massive job, could be her Achilles’ heel. And finally, to Olivia Wensley, who has based her campaign on economic diversification, positioning Queenstown Lakes as a tech hub, which carries on her work as boss of Start Up Queenstown Lakes.
“Queenstown is my home and my happy place, and I know that sentiment resonates with a lot of people in our community,” she said.
On the thorny issue of the Lakeview development, he batted away Mitchell’s plans to renegotiate the contract, saying it couldn’t be done, and he defended the council’s Economic Development Unit against Wensley’s claims there was a lack of expertise.
So, how did they do?

She’s perhaps the candidate who would get the most traction on a national level for Queenstown Lakes, but her plans came across as a bit too future focused. Her association to the council’s leaky building fiasco, her fatherin-law Ross Wensley built one of them, also received a lot of attention, and could be her undoing.
Her campaign has been based around community, talking about her life as a parent, business owner and resident in the town.

The Spring Swing dance is one of many events the band will participate in this year. “We have a number of younger players now, coming in and developing their skills, so it’s really important that we do get to play events to the public,” says Sarah Lyttle, one of the band’s saxophonists. The band’s goal is to create something for the community by the community. The event is open to anyone to come and enjoy a bop along to the big jazz sounds.
The preschool is a community-based not-for-profit, which has been providing its services for more than 30 years. “Support from this event will be a direct investment in the education of future generations of children in and around the Arrowtown area. It’s been humbling and amazing how much support we have had from local businesses,” says event organiser and mum at the preschool, Emily O’Leary.

“I think with everything over the last few years, this is such a great celebration – to have some sense of joy. Through Covid, a lot of people returned to their passions in the arts and culture. I hope this can really be a great night for people to celebrate and have some fun, and not everyone has to dance – we hope people don’t get put off by the dancing – the music is pretty hard not to dance to though. I hope we get a really wide range of demographics as well, so it makes us realise how much of a beautiful community we’re part of there,” says Lyttle. “We have done a few concerts over the years that people have loved. Ticket sales have always been really strong and the uptake too, but the feedback always was that people just love music to dance to. We have done an event previously for the museum fundraiser, a few years ago, and also the Alzheimer’s Society about five years ago. So, we figured let’s get it going, and then we decided all proceeds would go to the Arrowtown Preschool,” says Lyttle.

More disruption downtown
“Duke Street is operating as a two-way street with the assistance of temporary traffic signals, making it unsafe to have Camp Street operating as normal.”
Both streets are open for vehicles to access businesses and for tourism operators to remain functioning from the usual spots as far as possible, says Kā Huanui a Tāhuna (Whakatipu Transport Programme Alliance) Communication and Engagement Manager Catherine Edmeades.

Road closures in Queenstown CBD for five weeks are creating more headaches for motorists and businesses.
The closure is to enable the final section of the Lower Brecon Street streetscapes upgrade to be completed.
The plan is for Duke Street and Lower Brecon Street to be open for traffic before the end of October. Upper and lower Beach Street will be open to vehicles before Christmas.
The road will be reduced to one lane at times, with work from the BP roundabout to just past Potters Hill Road. Some noise is expected but power will not be disconnected.
“Unfortunately, the street is too narrow to allow a lane of traffic to operate while the final section is underway,” Edmeades says.
But NZSki has moved its coach pick up to Memorial Street.
Meanwhile, traffic delays are also expected overnight, from 9pm-6am, on Frankton Road, Sundays to Thursdays for the next one-to-three weeks.

The $1.6 billion plan is complete nonsense, we first need to see how we have financially fared after the last six years of council before we can even contemplate where we go in the next 10 years. Absolutely against building council offices in downtown Queenstown. Also, I am opposed to building in conjunction with another entity such as corporate Ngāi Tahu.
Given the over-spend on a wide range of projects including the rushed downtown redevelopment, Lakeview Taumata fiasco, looming $200 million leaky building budget hole, and QLDC about to hit its borrowing limit, we need to fully review all planned expenditure in council’s long-term plan - focusing more on community needs.
We desperately need to move most QLDC staff to one fit-for-purpose facility in Frankton – ideally using an existing building to enable a rapid move - leaving a small service centre in downtown Queenstown. We also need a post-earthquake operational emergency coordination centre in the Frankton area, ideally also as a new home for partner emergency agencies - close to the proposed community hub that we must approve this year.
Glyn Lewers Age: Occupation:44
Who should be Queenstown Lakes’ next mayor? With locals due to go to the polls in early October, we’ve asked the six candidates for their opinions on the major issues facing the district. We’re running the answers over the weeks leading up to the election. Here’s the third instalment: Is the $1.6 billion 10-year plan too ambitious? Do you support Project Manawa and downtown council offices?
Jon Occupation:Age:Mitchell58
Director, board chair, board member
While I understand the requirement for council services to be in one building for accessibility, there are less ostentatious options, like, moving council services to the Frankton area. This would not only free town centre spaces but also council carparks that currently house a fleet of council cars, not just in the open car parks but also in the Man Street carparking building. Council must focus on improving their services and on delivering tangible benefits to the region rather than on Project Manawa.
Olivia Wensley Age: Occupation:37
This includes a review of Project Manawa, away from a combined council and performing arts facility, to an integrated community performance and shoulder-season conference centre with parking – funded largely from outside council.
No, with our community beseeching for services, Project Manawa is not a good look for QLDC - it is self-serving. The priority should be on investing in public transport that is accessible, reliable and committed. Our public transport should not just be an alternate mode of transport but a purposefully built primary mode of transport. Expediting the Wānaka sports centre. Investing in educational, social, cultural and sporting opportunities for our residents and our future generations through grants, awards, scholarships and work experiences. These are the priorities for our region.
The 10-year plan is developed based on the strategic direction set by councillors and the required levels of service determined by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). If we were to do the bare minimum, we would have very little to invest in the social aspects that reinforce the social bonds in our district. I agree it is ambitious, but it must be to get to the level of service we expect. Our capital investment now twice exceeds pre-Covid levels. We are delivering on the plan. I support the Manawa concept, a mix of direct ownership and leasehold, by spreading our maintenance and depreciation costs away from the ratepayer on land we don’t have to purchase while creating a cultural space for the CBD. QLDC has shown that even though it is ambitious, we are delivering on what we said we would do while also building market capacity to do more.
Neeta Shetty Age: Occupation:48 Self-employed
I would move the Council offices to Frankton, because without a doubt that’s the best value for the ratepayer. And it would get 200 QLDC staff cars out of crucial

we absolutely need to spend and invest in our regionbut I would focus on supporting infrastructure and affordable housing. Council offices are very low on the priority list.
Just between you and me I’m not sure this project is entirely Inecessary.canthink of a few other ways to spend $1.6 billion, many in fact, but if such a project was to go ahead, I’m pretty sure we could do it for a bit less than $1.6 billion. I’m pretty good with money, I can normally get a dollar to go a long way, and if I’m elected, I’d bring all my financial skills with me in to council.
Tip: Challenge yourself to use a name or label an emotion 5 times in a week with someone you trust. It might look like coming home at the end of a busy day and instead of being irritated by your spouse’s’ questions and loud music - saying ‘I’m overstimulated from the day, is it okay if we have an hour of quiet time before making dinner?’ Or saying to your manager ‘I’m actually feeling really overwhelmed, can we talk about my workload?’ Notice how you are saying what you feel rather than reacting or sti ing that emotion.
Your Life Live It: Helpline@yourlifeliveit.com | www.yourlifeliveit.com
Improving self awareness can involve watching for patterns of behaviour, taking notice of your thoughts and seeing your emotions as data to discover the meaning behind the feeling. Often we think that emotions are things that need to be managed and only the good ones are allowed to be seen by others when in fact, emotions are signals from the body reacting to stimuli that can be both real or imagined, positive or negative.
Family Violence: P: 0800 456 450 | www.areyouok.org.nz
It is a sad fact that few of us learn how to effectively express our emotions as we develop through childhood and onwards. More often than not, we are punished for expressing big feelings like frustration or grief, being told to be strong or to be quiet. These emotions need a way to be expressed or else we risk further issues such as random outbursts and physical illness due to unprocessed stress. You may have heard the line ‘name it to tame it’ and this is a great way to practice emotional expressionsaying ‘I feel frustrated’ rather than reacting with frustration in the heat of the moment.
Stress Management
Tip: Next time a big emotion like anger shows up, take a moment to pause before reacting, look for the meaning behind the anger rather than trying to sti e or manage it. This self awareness exercise also helps to calm the physiological stress response and low and behold, the anger will feel less overwhelming.
Being able to interpret and respond to emotions within ourselves and others is a major life skill sometimes overlooked. Emotional intelligence helps us to better communicate our needs, monitor our stress levels then course correct when needed, empathise with others struggles and be exible in this constantly changing world. Below are 5 ways you can practice these skills and bring more con dence to using emotions as valuable data for personal and professional development.
Self Expression
Tip: Get curious about your stress tolerance by mapping out the moments you felt stressed in the past week combined with moments where you felt like you were recovering or processing that stress. Do the stress and recovery balance each other out? Do you feel like you need more recovery? Do you feel like you actually need more excitement and less rest? Map this out and use this to create a plan for the following week to nd more balance.
Want to learn and develop these skills for improved leadership and team management?
An upcoming Emotional Intelligence (EI) Training Course will equip you with an understanding of how to better manage yourself as well as others through change, challenge and burn out. Through the use of a personal assessment, the leading EI psychometric test for EQ, a full leadership report across 15 competencies gives you a clear picture of where you stand today. In training through self awareness, expression, decision making, stress management and interpersonal skills you will develop a personal development plan.

Interpersonal Relationships
When it comes to our problem solving and decision making, it’s important to acknowledge that we all tend to see ourselves as more objective, level headed and less biassed than we actually are. Blind spots are appropriately named as they are incredibly hard to see. However, all is not lost, and we can improve these skills through regular questioning of our beliefs, spending time with people who see the world differently than us and learning how to admit we were wrong (all of which are much easier said than done).

Tip: Next time you are unsure of a next step or solution, try asking someone for advice you wouldn’t normally approach. Someone outside of your friend group, in a different department or from another country could have insight or ideas you would never have thought of!
Tip: When someone near you is having a tough go of it, say they have a family member who is sick or they just ended a long-term relationship, next time they come to you sharing how hard things are or what they are going through, ask them if they want your help to ‘feel or x’. This avoids the cliche advice-giving that sometimes bypasses their struggle but also shows you are someone they can trust to just vent to without feeling judged.

Decision Making
5 emotional intelligence skills to practice today
The skills we typically boil down to create a good ‘people person’ include empathy, clear communication and engaged listening. A trap we sometimes fall into is seeing these as traits that are set and unchangeable. How often do we hear how hard it is to make new friends as we age? These are skills that absolutely can be strengthened and balanced in order to see a deeper connection made in any relationship. A great tool that can improve all of these skills is learning how to support someone who is struggling by simply asking them if they need space to vent, or if they are looking for advice on how to x the situation.

Air pollution and complaints drop
The ORC Pollution Hotline recorded 170 air complaints between May and August this winter, compared with 194 complaints for the same time a year ago – a 12.3% decline.
It rose slightly in Alexandra (from three to four), but dropped in both Central Dunedin (one to zero) and Mosgiel (four to one).
In Arrowtown, the number of days where the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality for particulate matter (PM10) was exceeded dropped from 23 in 2021 to 10 days this winter.

“This [2022] winter had fewer exceedances than last year, but temperature trends over recent years have been warmer winters than average.”
ORC’s Manager Compliance Tami Sargeant says the most common air complaints related to smoky chimneys and outdoor burning/fires.
There were fewer high air pollution days and fewer complaints across Otago this winter, data collected by the regional council shows.
“Compliance action has included sending out educational letters to alleged offenders in relation to domestic chimney and outdoor burning complaints, as well as issuing one abatement notice and six infringement notices for alleged breaches of the Air Plan,” she says.

Otago Regional Council monitors several places across the region where air quality is degraded over winters as people burn wood and other solid fuel to heat their homes. They include Arrowtown, Cromwell, Clyde, Alexandra, Central Dunedin, Milton and Mosgiel.
Pre-winter, ORC again ran its annual, educational ‘Burn dry, breathe easy’ campaign, highlighting the environmental and health benefits of burning dry wood rather than wet wood, advising on what materials to avoid, and providing cleaner burning tips.
“This makes the fine matter a serious threat to human health,” she says.

Quality Scientist Sarah Harrison says it is difficult to infer pollution trends winter-on-winter as the number of exceedances can vary depending on how harsh a winter is, and how often calm weather conditions occur, which allows pollution to accumulate.
The abatement notice and one of the six infringements was in relation to air discharge consent non-compliance, while the other five infringements were related to outdoor burning/ fires, she says.
Harrison says the main pollutant of concern in Otago is particulate matter, a product of combustion, produced by emissions from solid fuel burners during winter. PM10 is any solid or liquid particle with a diameter of less than 10 micrometres and PM2.5; particulate matter of less than 2.5 micrometres. Short-term and long-term exposure to particulate matter can contribute to the risks of developing or exacerbating existing cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Smaller particles such as PM2.5 are more dangerous because they can enter the bloodstream through the lungs.

Both Russia and the European Union have upped their dependence on Azerbaijan as a result of the war in Ukraine, possibly emboldening Azerbaijan to further chip away at Armenian boundaries, according to regional analysts.

The latest friction is a continuation of a conflict over borders since the Soviet collapse in the 1980s, with each nation looking to control the majority-Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh region located within the UNrecognized borders of Azerbaijan. Russia, Armenia’s formal ally, has effectively mediated the conflict before, but with its preoccupation with recent losses in Ukraine, some analysts argue Azerbaijan currently has a strong advantage.

The study showed that Scots pine seedlings damaged by barkfeeding weevils release vast quantities of volatile chemicals into the atmosphere. Undamaged plants exposed to these chemicals also start to release volatiles and prepare themselves to emit more if they are subsequently attacked by weevils.
FROM AROUND THE WORLD
A new study from the University of Eastern Finland shows that upon attack by bark-feeding weevils, conifers release substantial quantities of volatile organic compounds that provide important cues to neighbouring seedlings.

Fighting along the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted early last Tuesday, leaving close to 100 combatants dead in the worst violence of the decades long conflict since a 2020 war. Azerbaijan acknowledged it launched artillery strikes in the south through the day, with reports claiming Azerbaijani soldiers were advancing into Armenia despite a morning cease-fire brokered by Russia.

There is some categories of advertising that the company won’t run however, which includes political, gambling and cryptocurrency advertising which will be rejected and it will not market any products to children. It is still considering restrictions on Netflpharmaceuticals.ixhasnotannounced how much it plans to charge customers for the new tier, but Bloomberg reported it is expecting a monthly subscription of to be between $US7 to $US9. which will be about half the price of a current basic plan, which is $12.99.
Most Kiwis watch subscription television with Netflix by far and away the most popular. Roy Morgan data from early 2021 showed Netflix was New Zealand’s most popular subscription platform with 2,141,000 subscribers, well ahead of Sky’s 1,248,000. Overall, two thirds of kiwi’s and that’s 2.8 million aged 14 and over watch subscription television monthly.
The other less reported aspect of changes coming, Netflix plans to crack down on password sharing. Specifically sharing passwords with those not living under one roof or sharing in multiple properties. If Netflix spots someone password sharing, it’ll attempt to get the account holder pay up. One way is where multiple homes are using the same password.
Based on historical events, this series dramatises the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign. The Crown chronicles the Queen’s life over several decades, beginning in the late 1940s before her father King George VI died and she ascended to the throne.
Echoes is a relatively new show to Netflix. It’s a mystery drama follows identical twins Leni and Gina, who are hiding a dangerous secret from their families - they have been sharing a life and continually swapping homes. However, when one of the twins goes missing, their lives are thrown into chaos.
Global streaming giant Netflix is reportedly planning to make its new advertising tier available in New Zealand before the end of the year in a clear sign of its ambition to boost revenue as global growth slows.
NETFLIX WITH ADS IS COMING. HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW
ECHOESNetflix
The award-winning series, which premiered in 2016, has garnered huge viewership and critical acclaim for Netflix.
In Australia, where the streaming giant is also launching an advertiser funded model, executives have already begun discussions with advertisers about their plans to roll out the ads, which will be unskippable and appear before an episode or film starts.
In South America they’re trialing an “add a home” option, which will charge users an extra monthly fee when they stream through a TV or TV-connected device located outside a primary household linked to their account. As their growth stagnates Netflix has to explore how to attract new views and at the same time get more from their existing subscribers.
Netflix has been forced to look at options including an ad supported model after the pandemic saw its first drop in users in more than a decade. Initially plans to bring advertising to its service surprised many experts, given it was once fiercely opposed to the idea.
The show takes a bit of following especially when the twins change characters but very interesting plot. Michelle Monaghan leads the cast as twins Leni and Gina, alongside Matt Bomer as Jack, Daniel Sunjata as Charlie, Jonathan Tucker as Dylan James and Karen Robinson as Sheriff Louise Floss.
THE CROWNNetflix
ENTERTAINMENT ENTERTAINMENT
Viewership for the series has risen up to 800% in the UK, with huge numbers watching in the US, France, Australia and NZ since the Queens Ifdeath.you’ve not seen it, the series is hugely watchable.
The advertising service is expected to cost less than the price of the existing basic Netflix streaming subscription. Subscribers paying full price won’t have to view ads. Netflix is also considering running ads in the middle of a program under the new Netflservice.ixisstill making decisions on how and when to launch the new service offering but early 2023 is looking likely, however it could be as early as November.
Our team has curated some of our favorite suggestions on the best entertainment options current available. Here are a few more we have discovered and can thoroughly recommend.

362,000 hectares of national park and freehold land in Queensland’s Cape York have been returned to its traditional owners, heralding a “new era” for the peninsula. Over the past 27 years the Queensland government has handed back over 4.3 million hectares of land, an area the size of Switzerland. The Guardian
India’s ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to connect piped water to 192 million households by 2024, is over halfway to meeting its goal, having reached a 100 million homes. Historic legislation in Spain with the passing of the ‘only yes means yes’ law. It’s the result of one woman’s campaign after she was raped by five men during the 2016 bull-running festival in Pamplona. Under the new law, sexual consent must be affirmative and cannot be assumed by default or silence.

New York’s waterways are the cleanest they’ve been in over a century and the animals are coming back. Significant numbers of humpback, fin and right whales have started appearing along with bottlenose dolphins, spinner and hammerhead sharks, seals, blue crabs, seahorses, and oysters which vanished decades ago.
- The Guardian
In the 19th century, puffins were hunted to extinction on islands off the coast of Maine. In 1981, conservationists started the world’s first restoration of a seabird to habitats where humans had killed it off. Today, there are more than 1,300 pairs of puffins across several islands - the only state in the US where the bird breeds.

Iran is on the cusp of eradicating illiteracy, with the rate now surpassing 98%, a huge leap from just 48% in the 1970s. The country has also closed its literacy gender gap from 23% in 1976 to less than 6.1% in 2020. The Tourism Minister talks a big game about high-value, lowimpact tourism, and he should consult with the people who deliver precisely that daily. The programme covers common mental health challenges and crisis experienced by young people including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, substance use, psychosis.
They’ll then be able to train other adults working with youth in places such as schools, sports clubs and youth groups as well as caregivers, parents and whānau to become Youth Mental Health First Aiders.

“Early onset of mental health challenges is a significant predictor for future episodes but adolescents and young adults are less likely to seek or receive treatment than the wider population.
Cox says adolescence is the peak age of onset for mental health challenges. Half of all people who will ever have a mental health challenge will experience their first episode before 18 years of age.
Te Hau Toka chair Adell Cox says: “Prevention and early intervention are key to keeping our communities well and there’s a real need for more evidencebased specialised training to support our young people.
“Our youth mental health specialists have worked hard to identify a solution which will help us upskill key people in the Southern Lakes region.
Participants are taught how to communicate with and help a young person experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

HILARY FINNIE
Hilary and well-known Southland radio DJ John O’Connor at the NZBC (NZ Broadcasting Corporation) staff party - December, 1966.
In 1994 former Shotover Jet marketing manager Steve Lindsay suggested Hilary apply for Shotover Jet’s marketing manager role in Fiji. She got the job, and soon became general manager, a positon she held for four years. “This gave me huge job satisfaction. Taking something fledgling and growing it in very challenging circumstances.”
times for tourism. QPB spearheaded some major firsts for the country - seven day shopping among them. David also convinced the council to pass a commercial rates levy to fund joint marketing of the town. “The co-operative Queenstown Winter Marketing Group became a national blueprint,” says Hilary. “We took over the Winter Festival and secured its first major sponsor – DB, in 1987.”
Promotions are in Hilary’s blood. She’s played an integral community role, volunteering for Showbiz Queenstown for 30 years, in publicity and production management.
In 1980 the Finnies did a year-long stint on the Micronesian island, Palau, where Graeme worked for an American electrical contractor. “We found an English-speaking school and when the kids returned home they were a year ahead. At a certain age those life experiences are more important than classroom ones.”
She then became sales and marketing manager of Dart River Safaris for six years, before she and Graeme bought Pittaway’s Cottage in Arrowtown in 2004 and ran it as a B & B for 11 years. Returning guests remain good friends to this day.
When Graeme and workmate Dick Ussher bought the electrical business, their wives opened up a children’s clothing store – Kidstyle. “Gerry Lynch was our landlord and we paid $25 a week,” smiles Hilary. “He came to us saying he had to increase the rent and hoped we could manage it. He put it up to $28.” Kidstyle became the unofficial Queenstown crèche with mothers dropping kids off to the back room while they attended appointments or shopped.
Electrical, and the following summer Hilary became warden at Queenstown Youth Hostel, by then pregnant with son Chris.
A copywriter at local commercial radio station 4ZA from 1965 until 1971, Hilary would frequently double as minder for the station’s famous budgie, Bertie. However, it was as production assistant for the station’s bigger star, radio personality Tui Slade that Hilary made her mark. On air daily, fielding live calls in one of the first talkback shows in the country, she recalls one dear old lady ringing in about decimal currency just before it was introduced in 1967. “She said, ‘I think it’s a really good idea, but why don’t they wait until all the old people die?’” laughs Hilary.
Back in Queenstown working for Buckhams Wines and Spirits, Hilary pulled many pranks, one on workmate, truckie John ‘Blowie’ Walsh. She convinced him Kiwi blokes his age were being conscripted for the Falklands War. The local police even got in on it, signing him up and fitting him for a uniform. It was three days before they told a relieved Blowie the truth.
Without even trying she’s landed some of Queenstown’s top marketing roles with ease and always delivered with jovial enthusiasm, and it all started straight out of school at Invercargill’s 4ZA Radio Station.
Hilary then ran the office for the Queenstown Promotion Bureau – predecessor to Destination Queenstown, with former District Mayor David Bradford as boss. These were ground-breaking
Her effervescent personality was at the fore, manning travel show booths from Malaysia and Singapore to Sydney and Melbourne. Logistics didn’t always go as planned. “Vance Boyd came to Malaysia with us and we nearly missed our flight trying to get the raft he’d brought on board.”
Married to husband Graeme at 20, they set off on their OE in 1971, first to Australia, then on an Italian ship for six weeks around the South American Strait of Magellan to England. It was one big party for the younger passengers, many of them still friends. “It was the first time I ever smelt pot,” she says. It must’ve been a good party. “Somehow en-route to England I got pregnant.” Their two to three year trip was greatly reduced and after some hurried UK and European travel they flew home, thanks to a parental loan. Queenstown beckoned later in 1972 with baby Sarah in tow. Graeme worked for Frank Rose
The daughter of an Invercargill architect, Hilary Finnie had a privileged upbringing, school holidays and many weekends during the 1950s and 60s spent in her beloved Queenstown. “I went to school in Invercargill, but all my living experiences were in Queenstown at our family crib in Frankton Road,” she says.
HILARY AT THE HELM
Rounding up 10pm curfew breakers was a regular occurrence, especially on Sunday nights – Skyline’s live music night, when stragglers were trying to break back into the dorms. Guests had a duty roster and even without the internet one young American arrived requesting to feed the hostel’s pet goat. “He’d heard before leaving America that that was one of the fun duties at the Queenstown hostel.”
Born in 1947, the “sandwich kid” in the middle of four children, Hilary, loved to read, skied from age eight, and was a strong cricket and hockey player, as well as a school prefect. However, it was in promotions and advertising that Hilary would find her niche.

According to Biketober organiser Berit Landgraf, it is all about getting people to think about the way they travel. “It’s getting people on their bikes and more excited about biking, so that it becomes a transport option that people consider more in the future,” she says.
The good news is. 70% of us already have access to a bike, with the majority of trips people made on them were short ones. Over 80% of respondents made at least one trip of 1-2 kilometres a week, with similar numbers making at least one trip of between 2-10 kilometres a week.
• On Saturday 15th, is a Bike Maintenance Session at Wānaka Community Workshop.
If the Dutch can do it, so can we. Here is some of the programme highlights.
Emissions Reduction Plans globally find that people need to halve the time they spend in the car to achieve our emissions targets - and this applies to the Southern Lakes, too. We have to drastically reduce our energy consumption, and that means embracing active transport, think cycling.
Biketober is part of this year’s Wao Summit and their Get SMART, Get Moving initiative. Wao Aotearoa is southern lakes sustainability non-profit and in launching a month filled with bike-related events and activities across Queenstown & Wānaka it aims to celebrate the benefits of the two-wheeled life, for human health and for our planet.
• The Biketober market on October 1st will be followed closely by the GoGoElectro Family Picnic at Remarkables Park on Sunday 2nd.
There will be events for all ages and stages, from family picnics to bike maintenance workshops, and things will kick off with a Bike Market in Wānaka’s Dinosaur Park on October 1st followed closely by the GoGoElectro Family Picnic at Remarkables Park on Sunday 2nd. It’s not just the planet’s wellbeing we look after when we hop on our bikes, either, and Biketober is a celebration of all the reasons to opt for the bike, and a chance to share knowledge of bike safety practices.
• From October 4th-14th, get the kids along to WORD, the Biketober School Holiday Programme for 7-12 year old’s in Wānaka to get them excited about mountain biking.
• Tuesday 11th, Scroggin cafe in Wānaka will host a Green Drinks session exploring the theme of Sustainable Transport, with Simon Telfer from Active Transport Wānaka and Amanda Robinson from the Lightfoot Initiative.
the 26th CLT’s Annual Public Meeting has rescheduled it’s meeting to Monday 3 October, at 5pm.
• On Sunday 16th, celebrate the coming of summer and the transition from snow to track at Cardrona. ‘Fun Never Stops’ is a ski, snowboard and mountain bike race from the top of the ski field all the way down to the Cardrona Hotel.
Over two thirds (68%) of people in our survey gave improving fitness as their main reason for wanting to use more sustainable transport. “A lot of people in the community have a bike in their garage,” says Berit, “So it’s about using it recreationally, but also getting people past that so they think about using it for transport as well.”
To find out how much we do ride bikes currently the Wao team ran a Get SMART transport survey between August 2021 and March 2022, with 367 local participants. No surprise despite distances travelled, the majority of trips were taken by car.
Te Atamira, Dart House, Remarkables Park.
The second half of the month includes a Test the Tourist Network brainstorm, Arrowtown’s Cyclorama e-bike festival, Bike Glendhu Falcon’s Quest race and Dean’s Bank 10 hour MB Quest. The month culminates with a Sustainable Communities bike tour, a Get SMART, Get Moving film screening session and, of course, Bike Glendhu dog day.
Citizens Advice Bureau CAB is looking for positive, empathetic volunteers who enjoy helping others and also would like to make a difference to the Queenstown Community. Good local knowledge is important, as is the ability to think outside the square. Good computer skills are essential. Training is provided.

COMMUNITY NOTES
What would a more bike-centric Southern Lakes community look like? Biketober is dedicating a whole month to finding out.
Biketober is a chance to gather and discuss these ideas and more, and as Berit says, “while halving our vehicle use might sound like a lofty goal, it’s happening all over the world. The Dutch have managed to make Utrecht a bicycle-first city, redesigning roads and creating large bike-parking buildings. Nationally, bikes outnumber people”.

Whilst CEO, Johns has been the chief sponsor of the project to build a new international airport over 380km away at Tarras.
LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 32 Queenstown Now Open! 5 Hawthorne Drive (in the signature yellow building) petcentral.co.nz
Christchurch Airport CEO departure a ‘perfect opportunity’ for reset
It would provide a route for wide-bodied jets into the lower South Island, bringing thousands more tourists and rivalling smaller regional airports, particularly Queenstown.
Johns first actioned the idea of a new international airport in Central Otago in 2018, claiming it to be “an intergenerational opportunity”. Since that time, $45 million has been spent on land acquisitions at Tarras, with millions more on planning and project delivery.
Marilyn Duxson, deputy chair of Sustainable Tarras, said: “Malcolm Johns has committed the business to millions of dollars of investment, with no business case, no public discussion and no social licence in Central Otago or Christchurch to do so.
by Paul Taylor
Community group Sustainable Tarras says that there are many compelling reasons why this project should be cancelled.
“All at a time when the significant carbon impacts of aviation are in the spotlight, a climate emergency has been declared, and the central government is actively working on new legislation that further protects our
“Weclimate.see a very different intergenerational opportunity for our children and Shegrandchildren.”saysthatso much has changed since Johns first came up with the airport idea in 2018 “that it would be irresponsible of the board not to revisit this “It’sstrategy”.interesting that Malcolm also talked about aviation emissions being a ‘wicked problem’ while continuing the significant spend of taxpayer and ratepayer money on this development.”
Sustainable Tarras believes Christchurch Airport board should withdraw its support for a proposed new airport in Central Otago, following the departure of CEO Malcolm Johns.
Industry experts have suggested that the airport will cost more than $1 billion, and in the absence of a business case from Christchurch Airport, commentators are saying that the new airport is likely to run at a significant operating loss for decades, meaning it would take Christchurch ratepayers many years to recover their annual dividend contribution, on top of the significant project risk, Duxson says.
Johns announced last week he will be stepping down. His resignation follows swiftly on the back of the airport’s 75% owner Christchurch Council Holdings (CCHL) losing its chief executive officer, chair and a director - all within a fortnight. CCHL is 100% owned by Christchurch City Council.
