Ticked off about tickets
Yes, we all know petrol and diesel has gone up hugely and we also know more people are skiing than ever before, so the old issue of parking at the various ski areas is again being tested. Some peeps are car sharing and smart ones are parking at the bottom of Coronet Peak and arranging a lift up to save on both of the aforementioned. However, there is only so much space and good old reliable Queenstown Lakes District Council have removed parking across from the Cargo pub and the (mostly empty) gravel carpark at Queenstown Resort College’s Shotover Lodge is a TOW AWAY or CLAMP area. But how MEAN and nasty is the guy ticketing cars parked on the verge at the bottom of Coronet Peak access road? The piddly little useless sign is positioned in such a way as to trick people as they park there. They can’t actually see it. It’s a great revenue-gathering area and I have brought this to council’s attention previously. However, our current council are the worst we have ever had at getting back to one’s question or returning calls (yep, you know who are). Worst of all, they ticketed cars on MATARIKI Day, a public holiday, and knowing no one can see the sign. Nice one.
What pandemic? Queenstown enjoyed a bumper weekend as the stars, and school holidays, aligned to see the tourists return in their droves. Thousands of Aussie and domestic visitors were in town, leading to booked out restaurants, busy shops and long queues at Skyline (pictured), the skifields and Queenstown Airport. Saturday was particularly pumping, thanks to spectacular winter sun after a little snow to top up the ski runs overnight.
I don’t see any reason why this is no parking area and I encourage anyone who has been fined to not pay it as this is dishonest ticketing, in my opinion. Write in and make them reverse it or demand better signage. Last I heard, all these people are public servants and supposed to represent us ratepayers. Things have slipped. Jeff Hylton Skier at Coronet for 45 years
Cars and even a motorhome were parked up on the verge at the bottom of Coronet Peak on Saturday, although none had been ticketed by mid-afternoon. The Lakes Weekly Bulletin has asked QLDC for a response on its parking enforcement policy. Will it be relaxed across the district in response to bus service cuts and problems staffing private services due to illness?

Riding the biking boom by Paul Taylor
Crankworx Summer Series will return to Queenstown Lakes as the biking and events economy get rolling again.
“Hopefully, the riders will be in town when the bike festival happens, but it depends on the timing and how close to the Rotorua event it is.
The international bike festival has been given $8.1 million from the Government to support its Rotorua stop on the Crankworx World Tour, every year until 2027.
“Some of the international riders can fly in and fly out, especially now that’s much easier than last year, when they had to book places in MIQ.”
And that money will also fund up to 24 Summer Series events, hosted across the South Island.
The 2021 QTMBC festival was due to feature 15 events across nine days from 4 February, including McGazza Fest on the first weekend, celebrating the life of renowned Queenstown mountain biker Kelly McGarry.
Dubbed the ‘ultimate MTB roadie’ by the organisers, the Summer Series NZ was launched in December 2021 as the Covid-19 pandemic affected its overseas operations.
But it was one of a host of events cancelled or postponed as the country moved into the red traffic light setting, including Queenstown Marathon, Gibbston Valley Winery summer concert, The Motatapu, and NZ Golf Open.
It followed a similar format to Crankworx’s summer series in British Columbia, spreading the love from the main Whistler event, which was cancelled for two years.
The events industry was seen as a way to encourage domestic tourism and help tourist towns cope with the impact of closed borders, with the Southern Lakes Regional Events fund given an $8.5m pot alone to help the region’s events.
The NZ version visited Queenstown, Wānaka, Cardrona and Alexandra, and one of the highlights was undoubtedly the muddy, epic downhill race through the trees at Queenstown Bike Park, helped along by a jubilant crowd, celebrating Crate Day.
But, somewhat ironically, the industry itself was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, as changing Government restrictions saw dozens of events promoted, funded and organised, but then pulled at the eleventh-hour.
Queenstown Lakes District Council has also stumped up more than $30k to see the Summer Series return, while the Southern Lakes Regional Events fund has backed it with an undisclosed amount.
They’re all set to return over the next couple of years though, with an estimated economic benefit of more than $100 million to Queenstown Lakes.
Murray Strong, who chairs the panel that dishes out the grants, believes it will help build “an iconic mountain bike series for the region”.
Bike tourism as a whole could provide even more than that by 2026, as cyclists are drawn to the many downhill trails, along with the network of Queenstown Trails Trust trails criss-crossing the town, and the expansion into summer biking by Coronet Peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort.
And Queenstown Mountain Bike Club president Pete McInally says it will be enthusiastically welcomed by the district’s now-huge biking community. “We’ve been hoping they’ll come back because we want to have that relationship and show Queenstown to the world, even though it’s not the full festival like Rotorua. “Last year was great, with the pump track race and the downhill, although it was very muddy. You don’t want to be known as a mud race, but I heard some of the top guys say it was one of the funnest races of the year.” Crankworx organisers are tight-lipped on the plans for the series so far, but McInally hopes it will tie in with QTMBC’s own Queenstown Bike Festival, which will be held from 20-29 January, 2023.
A recent study by Queenstown-based economist Benjie Patterson, commissioned by Xero founder Rod Drury showed spending by visitors who bike could climb to $209.8m, including $135.6m by people who come to Queenstown Lakes mainly for the biking it offers.

MENTAL health
How to live a happy simple life Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
I have had my cousin over from Canada and her lovely husband Kevin and he shared this thought provoking story with me. I think you will like it and the lessons it teaches us. Kevin worked in transportation in Canada primarily in road safety. There’s a study whereby one crossroads has lots of signs and traffic lights to keep everyone safe.
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural Coding® Company. She has 30 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.
The other crossroads has no signage and no traffic lights. There is a temptation to add more signage and safety measures to every intersection yet when we look at which crossroads is safer, guess which one it is? Yep, the one with nothing.
Live life simply and happily. Take the road with no signs and no safety measures and trust that you have all you need inside you.
And here’s why. Each driver has to take personal responsibility, they have to be in control and make the safest choice. This crossroads literally puts you in the drivers seat. And it’s simple, there are no confusing road signs, no lights, just the road and it’s white lines. Therefore the simpler and cleaner the crossroads is the easier it is to be safe. And if we apply this to our life then there’s some very powerful lessons. Live simply, don’t over clutter life with things. Living simply means you free up time to be in the now and really live, things are just added as temporary distractions, the next shiny thing. Live in the drivers seat, take personal responsibility for your choices, your triumphs, your ups and downs, own them. This gives us power, if we take personal responsibility for where we are right now then this means we have the power to change that. Yet, if we blame others for where we are now then we are powerless to change it, we need something external to change in order for us to change, this is an illusion, it will never happen. So the next time you may be tempted to blame something or someone else stop and think about where you are on the crossroads. Are you being shown when to make a move, when to brake or are you taking personal responsibility for your journey? Are you owning it? Knowing that the latter is more powerful is a great insight, even if you are not there, even if you are blaming others at least now you are aware you have options and can change your position.

Ditch the single-use plastic by Paul Taylor
What easy swaps can you do to help reduce the amount of single-use plastics?
Meanwhile, Queenstown Lakes District Council has given $122,000 to 13 community waste minimisation projects.
That’s the question being asked by the good folks at Sustainable Queenstown as they encourage locals to join in the global Plastic Free July movement.
They include a bank of reusable nappies to be used by families in the Glenorchy area, and a pilot scheme by Wastebusters to rebrand and sell surplus uniforms.
“Reusable cups are the big one, and there’s also beeswax wraps [replacing glad wrap}, and toiletries, using bars of soap etc.,” Sustainable Queenstown member Neha Gosalia says.
The Wānaka Community Workshop Trust will receive money to buy another piece of machinery for its MenShed, as well as to set up the new Fabricate space where people can learn to repair, remake and create clothing and basic soft furnishings.
“There are so many different options out there. I try to purchase bulk food in refills and there are a couple of companies out there that make that possible, including New Leaf Refills in Queenstown, Bin Inn and Honest Wholefood in Wānaka. “You can take in your own containers and fill them with grains, pasta, rice, flour, all these things that come in single use plastic.” The organisation is running a series of events over the next fortnight to promote Plastic Free July, which has inspired more than 100 million people in 190 countries to take action.
Wao won a grant to continue its work encouraging a shift in behaviour in the construction and building sector towards a circular economy, and The Wanda Foundation will be able to stage 14 shows for children across the district. The council received 21 applications totalling more than $250,000 for grants from its QLDC Waste Minimisation Community Fund, established in 2019 to help the push towards a sustainable, zero-waste district.
They include a Ceramic Soap Dish Workshop at the monthly Green Drinks this Wednesday, 20 July, which is almost sold out, and a Kids Go Plastic Free with Under the Sea Pottery session on Saturday, 23 July, at 10am, at Te Atamira, Remarkables Park. Details are on the Sustainable Queenstown Facebook page. NZ-made documentary For The Blue will also be screened at Dorothy Browns, Arrowtown, next Wednesday, 27 July, at 7pm followed by a Q&A with filmmaker, Adriana Bird, and Queenstown Lakes District Council’s waste minimisation officer, Kath Buttar. Tickets are on sale. Types of plastic are labelled 1-7, but only 1,2 and 5 can be recycled in New Zealand. China stopped taking plastic waste from other countries in 2017, so 3,4,6 and 7 are landfilled. “Ideally, we just want to stop using them altogether, because recycling is consumer dependant and there’s lots of variables, such as cleanliness and lids, which might not be numbered at all.”

FUTURE MINDS
by Sue Fea
Queenstown Robostormers
They may be the self-confessed ‘nerdy ones’, but Queenstown’s Robostormers are determined to take the robotics world by storm. They’re a tight-knit, super enthusiastic little community of kids coached by an equally selfconfessed ‘nerdy one’ – Queenstown structural engineer Paula Hugens. “I look for the kids who are super keen with an enquiring mind, who aren’t just good at computer games, but how things work. They’re almost the ones who would want to hack into the game to see how it works, not just play,” she says. “Their eyes light up when they walk into the team headquarters.” The club currently has members as young as eight, right through to team captain Tannin Heeley, a Year 13 student at Wakatipu High School. “He started out with me at Code Club at Remarkables Primary School in 2016,” says Paula. Robostormers was founded by the late Martin Wightman, who started it in 2016, and Paula has led it ever since. “We learn a bit of everything, coding, building and designing mechanical parts, strategy, which is very important for the competitions that we take part in every year,” says Paula. Strategies change each year and she searches out the kids who are strategic, focusing each member of the team on their particular talents and strengths. Sometimes they build Lego robots which they have to code. At entry level the team competes at RoboCup, hosted in Dunedin in September. The robots are usually programmed to follow a course using light sensors. The next level involves First Lego League competition, which Paula says has taken the Queenstown team to Sydney to compete. “Each year they also do a themed scientific research project.” The older members take part in the First Tech Challenge, which is starting up again this year after a hiatus. “This attracts the top echelon and brings amazing opportunities. Our ultimate goal is for our
competitors to get recognised by US colleges so that they gain scholarships and, if they do well, jobs with top companies and organisations like NASA,” she says. “We’re always geared around producing good engineers. These kids make great engineers.” While it’s a competitive environment Paula says it’s about being inclusive, as with any team, and celebrating each other. “We call it co-opetition. “It’s really cool fun – not boring old nerdy engineering at all,” she says. Last year the group built a robotics machine for a competition that was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid restrictions. “The robot travelled around the floor and had a roller that sucked up little rubber donuts with a mechanism that fired them at a goal. They were so fast and accurate, they would get wedged into the goal. They were deadly,” she laughs. In 2018 the team’s First Lego League members won a national competition, which gave them entry into the Sydney competition. “That was a massive opportunity where we decided we had to up our game. It all changed and suddenly everything clicked into gear,” she says. In 2019 the team was invited to compete in Dubai in an Olympicstyle event, airfares and accommodation all covered by sponsorship – a huge step up for which the kids spent months preparing. “Our 14
A close-up of one of the competition robots the team designed and built.
and 15-year-olds held their own competing against mostly 18 year olds. I was so impressed.” Local kaumatua Darren Rewi blessed the robot in a ceremony before they left and Mayor Jim Boult came around to wish them well. “The community has been wonderful supplying parts to us and a local joiner up the road built a special case to transport the robot to Dubai in.”
The robot currently under construction at Robostormers headquarters for the upcoming FIRST Tech Challenge Competition using an REV Robotics Kit.

The private hospital, which is based in Lower Shotover in Queenstown, has entered into a services contract with Te Whatu Ora Southern (Health New Zealand) for the provision of some publicly funded procedures. “We can confirm that publicly funded patients receive urgent and planned care at the Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital,” Te Whatu Ora Southern senior communications advisor Kate Mackersy said.

COMMUNITY NOTES Food, transport and de-growth key themes at upcoming Wao Summit Community non-profit, Wao Aotearoa, has announced the programme for its annual sustainability festival which will take place in Wanaka and Queenstown from October 25-31st 2022. The announcement was made at the second “green drinks” event held at Freshlink Grocer and was attended by approx 100 people. The event was a sell out with registrations closing over 1 week before the announcement. The six-day summit which has events in both Wanaka and Queenstown, focused on mainstreaming sustainability and fostering diversity, will seek to provide a 360 degree approach to creating tangible social, environmental and behavioral change; with a strong emphasis on food resilience, modal shift and de-growth.
Olivia Bonifant, summit co-ordinator, says there is something for everyone. “What we are trying to do here is not only educate, but inspire others. If everyone simply considers a small shift in the way they consume, eat and move then we will be well on our way to collective, sustainable change” Bonifant said. “No matter where you sit with regard to climate action and sustainability, our Wao Summit has something here for you. We encourage everyone to take a look and come along!” She finished. For more information and to book go to wao.co.nz/gettickets.
Wao co-founder Monique Kelly says this year is also about community. “As we come together after the last two years of Covid-19 it is important to not only recognise what we have achieved, despite the pandemic, but remain focussed on what we still need to achieve in order to collectively benefit our planet,” Kelly said. “Our 2022 programme will focus on changing the way we move, partnerships and collaboration, de-growth and food resilience. We’ll have interactive workshops, kōrero, films and tours all celebrating our local biodiversity and showcasing some of the brightest minds in future thinking,” She added. The summit schedule is a full immersion experience and includes the awardwinning documentary ‘2040’, a session on global regeneration, climate action in the rural sector, permaculture and the art of eating sustainably, seafood and the planet, what a sustainable community really looks like and much more. There will also be a micro film festival running during the summit week. The programme also offers comprehensive workshops around better building, climate accounting, community wellness and waste reduction.

NEWS IN BRIEF
October elections Nominations are now open for the Queenstown Lakes District Council elections in October. A mayor and 11 councillors will be elected; three for the Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward, four for Queenstown-Whakatipu Ward, and four for Wānaka-Upper Clutha Ward. There’ll also be four members elected to the Wānaka-Upper Clutha Community Board. Four people are standing for the mayoralty, Jon Mitchel, Olivia Wensley, Al Angus, and Glyn Lewers, but there aren’t too many putting their names forward to be councillors so far. Last week, Cr Esther Whitehead announced she plans to stand again, running a zero-spend campaign, but single-term Wānaka Niamh Shaw is standing down.

Bus cuts Otago Regional Council has cut bus services in Queenstown and Dunedin due to driver shortages. The reduced timetable will be in operation seven days a week in Queenstown, from Tuesday, 19 July. It’s around a 25% reduction in normal service levels. Every second service for route 1 until 7pm will be cut. Additional services on route 2 and 5 at peak times are also for the chop, taking the service to hourly at all times. Updated timetables are on the QLDC website. School services will be unaffected.
Covid surge Covid-19 cases have increased considerably in the last two weeks, to about the same number as there were back in March. There are around 816 active cases in Queenstown Lakes, according to the latest figures, and 49 people in hospital across the Southern region. Alongside the added burden of influenza infection and winter illnesses, it’s putting pressure on the health service, Te Whatu Ora Southern says. And waste water testing shows that potentially more than half of people with Covid-19 in the Southern region are not reporting their infection.

PASTA CAFÉ Hungry For Love
by Sue Fea What: Pasta Café
Where: St Margaret’s Church, Ross Street, Frankton When: 4 consecutive Fridays from July 22, from 6pm until 8pm. Still renowned the world over for filling the tummies of many a weary, homesick winter worker, Queenstown’s popular Pasta Café is back sharing the love and lashings of home cooking, all for free, from Friday, July 22. It will be the 20th year the United Nations free for all, ‘all you can eat’ feast will be laid on weekly for anyone in the community who just needs a warm, hearty meal, some good conversation and a free night out. First launched in the Wakatipu Presbyterian Community Church’s St Andrew’s Church overlooking downtown Queenstown in 2002, tireless volunteers have turned out thousands of hot pasta meals, served with kindness, since that time. At its peak Pasta Café volunteers have served up between 350 and 400 meals on any given Friday night, with eager skifield workers always first off the bus and into the queues, which at times stretched some distance down Stanley Street. Rev Ian Guy says the event was moved to the church’s St Margaret’s venue at Frankton in recent years for ease of access and parking, but skifield workers, particularly those a long way from home, always find their way there. “They just love the home cooking – meat sauce, pasta, topped with cheese, fresh vegetables and bread, followed by home baking and hot drinks.” He’s even noticed ex-travellers returning to Queenstown asking if Pasta Café is still on some years later
Some well-known local faces, including former Queenstown radio DJ Grant Stewart (second right), ready for service at Pasta Café in recent years at the new St Margaret’s venue in Frankton.
However, with so many overseas workers leaving the country during the past two years the focus has changed, and while they always came along before, Ian says the new venue attracts more local families now. “People seem to be struggling more than they have for a long time, both with isolation and finances,” he says. “It costs a lot to feed a family for a night so we’re expecting even more families this year.” He says many local families can’t afford to take the kids to a restaurant. “This is their ‘going out’.” “It’s all done by the generosity of so many people, not only in the church, but in our wider community. In particular, YWAM and Kiwi Harvest have been a tremendous support,” he says. “Kiwi Harvest collects any excess food in the community and we just top that up.” The event is totally reliant on volunteers and Ian says these range from those in their early 20s to those in their 80s. “We even get a few high school students helping.” While it’s been a struggle to attract volunteers during the past few years enough have stepped up this year. It’s a wonderful warm, friendly atmosphere with board games and art for the kids, live music and plenty of great conversation, he says. Ian’s pretty confident that this year’s four-week Pasta Café season will run its full course. “We tried to run it the last two years. Last year we got shut down after two weeks with tightening Covid-related restrictions and the year before we got three weeks in before we were shut down for the same reason.” It’s a totally non-threatening environment, with totally no pressure, he says. “Given the world-wide trauma of the past two years we believe the community needs this more than ever,” says Ian. “It’s a place to relax, converse, laugh, cry, pray, and enjoy wonderful free food. Everybody’s welcome and even though we may not always know your name we’ll be glad you came,” he says. “We believe God has been good to us and our hope is that we can pass this blessing on to both locals and visitors in a safe, warm and friendly environment.”
Having a bit of fun at the servery during the central Queenstown St Andrew’s Pasta Café venue days.
The aim is to ensure everyone is acknowledged and welcomed with genuine aroha (love). Table talk is encouraged to strengthen whānau and there’s always lots of laughter and broad smiles.”
Pasta Café lovers tuck into a delicious feast of food and conservation in recent years at the new St Margaret’s venue in Frankton.

The New York-based giant asked its international network of correspondents and contributors to nominate countries, regions, cities and towns, with a focus on those offering new and exciting experiences. Queenstown is the home of “high flying adventure”, it says. “Set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu on South Island, Queens¬town is both a destination in its own right and a fantastic base to explore the region’s diverse landscapes,” it reads. But with our borders now open and some exciting new initiatives happening in the local visitor economy, we are looking forward to getting back to doing what we are famous for – welcoming visitors and
“Our first winter is going very well so far, with plenty of bookings from the luxury market. People are keen to find out what ‘beyond five star’ is like.” Denisyuk also highlights the fact three of New Zealand’s Great Walks are within a couple hours’ driving distance. “The system of trails turns 30 this year, leading hikers through the mountain peaks, valleys, and waterfalls of the Fiordland National Park,” her article reads. James Webb telescope: a scientist explains what its first, amazing images show – and how it will change astronomy By Martin Barstow, Professor of Astrophysics and Space Science, University of Leicester, UK, writing for The Conversation
After decades of development and many trials and frustrations along the way, the James Webb telescope has finally started to deliver what it came for. On July 12, Nasa released the first scientific observations made by the suite of instruments carried on board the mission, marking what we eagerly anticipate will be the beginning of a new era in astronomy. After the nail-biting launch on Christmas Day, a series of critical deployments followed to open up the telescope and its sun-shade. If any of these operations had failed, James Webb would have been an unusable disaster. But the programme was perfectly executed, a process that ran more smoothly and successfully than any one of us had dared hope, let alone expect. This is not just a testament to the skill of the engineers, technicians and scientists in the project. It also highlights the tremendous importance of the testing programme carried out on Earth to verify the procedures and which occasionally revealed problems that needed to be fixed before launch. While this sometimes resulted in schedule slippages and cost increases, it has ultimately produced a perfect telescope. During July, the telescope moved from its checkout and testing phase to operation, as the amazing observatory it has long been planned to be. Those of us who have been involved in the journey and will work on the data, can hardly wait.
Unveiled by US president Joe Biden, the stunning image of SMACS 0723, a cluster of thousands of galaxies, was released on July 11. The massive foreground galaxy groups magnify and distort the light of objects behind them, helping us to peer back in time at very faint objects. The image shows the galaxy cluster as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago. But more distant galaxies in the image (the ones which appear stretched) are about 13 billion years old – and we already have more data on them than we have on any other ancient galaxy. Images such as this will help us understand how the first stars and galaxies formed. Some of these may be among the most distant objects known, from the beginning of the universe. The picture is a composite “colour” image made from observations made at different wavelengths. It was taken by the telescope’s NearInfrared Camera (NIRCam). James Webb has also caught a glimpse of Stephan’s Quintet, a group of five galaxies that are merging some 290 million lightyears away in the constellation Pegasus. The image also suggests there’s a supermassive black hole at the centre, and shows stars being born. The data will tell us more about how galaxies evolve and the rate at which supermassive black holes grow.
Crisp images The new “early release observations”, selected by an international committee of representatives from Nasa, Esa (European Space Agency), CSA (Canadian Space Agency), and the Space Telescope Science Institute, are part of a programme designed to highlight the wide range of science the telescope will carry out. It is very exciting to see the new images – I was not prepared for the level of crispness and fine detail that can be seen. It’s a joy to finally have such high-quality data.
Stephan’s Quintet. Image: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI
The next picture shows the Carina Nebula, seen in the image below, which is one of the largest and brightest nebulas (clouds of dust and gas in which stars are born). James Webb can probe deep inside dust in the infrared light, to reveal the inside of the stellar nursery – which we’ve never seen before – to discover more about how stars are born.

Page 21
LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN The Carina Nebula is located approximately 7,600 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina. The image shows hundreds of completely new stars (every dot of light is a star), and jets and bubbles created by them. We can also see details that we cannot yet explain. The next, spectacular image is of the Southern Ring or “EightBurst” nebula, a planetary nebula, which is an expanding cloud of gas, surrounding a dying star, or in this case two dying stars orbiting each other. It is nearly half a light-year in diameter and is located approximately 2,000 light years away from Earth. The foamy orange shell in the image is molecular hydrogen (a gas which forms when two hydrogen atoms bond together), whereas the blue centre is an electrically charged gas. In the right-hand image, you can see the two dying stars in the centre, giving us an opportunity to study stellar death in unprecedented detail.
Southern Ring Nebula. NASA, ESA, CSA, and STScI
The new data is the result of months of painstaking measurement and testing to make the James Webb ready for use as a scientific tool following deployment. The first steps were to focus and align the images of each of the mirror segments. Each of the telescope’s scientific instruments - NIRCam, The Near InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) – were also switched on and tested. All these instruments, which look at deep space in different wavelengths, had to be cooled down, along with the telescope, otherwise they would radiate background heat which would interfere with the sensitive observations of astronomical objects. The last to be turned on was MIRI, which operates at the lowest temperature, just seven degrees above absolute zero, which took several months to achieve. The size of a telescope – its aperture – is the key thing that decides the ultimate quality of the images and the detail that can be observed. Bigger is better. Large telescopes with apertures up to ten metres in diameter have been constructed on the ground.

However, the interfering effects of the atmosphere, which disturb the light reaching the telescope, make it hard to achieve the ultimate resolution. Also, on Earth, background light from the night sky limits the telescope sensitivity, the faintest objects we can see. With its six-metre aperture, James Webb is the largest telescope ever launched into space and from its vantage point a million miles from Earth, free from the Earth’s atmosphere, it is expected to deliver the best, most detailed views of the universe we have ever seen. There is no doubt that it will revolutionise our understanding of the cosmos, just as its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, once did.

MARY WESTON
CHAMPION MUM AND MUSICAL MAESTRO
Nobody could ever accuse mum of four, Mary Weston of wrapping her kids in cotton wool. There was no extra padding under the play equipment in the Weston backyard – perhaps the reason two of her kids are now film industry stunt performers. A mum could not be more proud of all four, however, in her typical humble style Mary Weston rarely mentions her own glamour days as a member of a top 1970s rock band. Born in Whakatane – second of eight kids, to a primary school principal and teacher, her father’s promotions saw the Ennis family move all over the country. A move to Auckland, where Mary’s dad lectured at Teacher’s College, was quite a transition from the many small rural postings, but a chance for Mary to follow her passion for music. She begged her parents to send her to the Catholic college to pursue classical piano. Here she learned under the best, led by Dame Sister Mary Leo, of Kiri Te Kanawa fame. The family was soon on the way to Dunedin, moving south on a camping adventure in their Kingsway Dodge with a large trailer loaded behind. It was 1967. “I’d always enjoyed looking at images of the South Island and thought how magical it looked and how I would love to be there one day,” says Mary. Here she became part of the Otago Girls High School Musical Group. “We travelled to Central Otago and Tekapo for music camps and I was the one with my face pressed to the window admiring the spectacular views.”
At 17, Mary entered Teacher’s College and in her third year auditioned for a rock band. “I was really nervous, but my sister said, ‘You’re going!’ She rang the band and posed as me, made a time, then pushed me up the stairs to the audition.”
Well known Queenstown musician, the late Kevin Lynch, was leaving the band, The Titans, and helped Mary learn the band’s repertoire. Over the years her gear built up to an organ with a piano on top, a treble and bass Leslie units, two large speakers and amplifier. The Titans, fresh off the back of a national competition win, were very popular, playing back-up for legendary 1960’s singing duo, The Chicks, ‘Shane’ and Yolande Gibson. Mary’s first trip to Queenstown was a summer gig playing for dances, as well as back-up to The Chicks – Sue and Judy Donaldson. “While performing at Queenstown’s Memorial Hall The Chicks and I stayed together in a little motel adjacent to the hall. It was great fun and a little mischievous,” recalls Mary. Mary was impressed by Shane’s lead guitarist ‘Phantom’. “He’d pick me up in his zooped-up car and take me to Shane’s gigs.” An accommodation glitch meant Chick’s manager Ray Columbus was happy for the girls to stay with Mary’s family in Dunedin - the talk of the town. The Titans performed at uni bashes, local and out of town pubs, plus Queenstown and Wanaka summer gigs. Unfortunately all five years of band memories photos were stolen when, years later, her car was broken into in Auckland. By 1975 Mary was off travelling through Australia, Asia, the UK and Europe, finally meeting future husband, Andy, in Germany. They sold china and crystal to American military without proper paperwork, dodging the Military Police. Back in London she and Andy worked for a painting company. “The boss wasn’t happy hiring a female and tried to fob me off. We painted billiard halls at night after hours as it paid well.” Mary and Andy married in the UK in 1978. Their wedding car was her brother, John Ennis’s (also of Queenstown) campervan. After a stint back in New Zealand the couple moved to Australia for Andy to pursue his diving career, then on to Singapore where Mary taught at the NZ Army School. This led to a passion for the Performing Arts and she joined the New Zealand Forces Theatre Group, eventually writing, producing and directing shows. Eldest daughter Carla was born there.
Mary with little granddaughter Evie
“I’ve always loved the Old Music Hall Style of theatre.” After Brisbane son Beau arrived and the family returned to Whanganui where Mary taught in local schools and re-immersed herself in her passion for all things theatrical. In 2000 it was off to the Gold Coast where Mary volunteered at schools and eventually became full-time Music-Performing Arts teacher. Here the kids got into screen acting and stunt training, pushing for a film industry career. Queenstown then seemed to be a good move for their careers. It was. Mary’s kids are now successful in everything from stunt work to video operating internationally, rubbing shoulders with the stars. Since arriving in 2006 Mary’s been Costume Queen behind the scenes at local productions, particularly Wakatipu High. Just last year she was invited back to Whanganui to script, produce and direct the school production. At 71, Mary’s happy to be “settled in one place”, enjoying campervan trips and precious grandchildren locally, and afar.
In Wellington, Mary joined the Company of Musical Players performing and directing and fell pregnant with second daughter, Gemma. “On one occasion I was rehearsing a drag dance item from the floor at the front of the stage and I stepped back and my foot caught a pole wire.” Mary tucked and turned, managing to land, roll and lie with legs in the air.’ “The cast freaked, but no harm done.” Mary, ready to perform in Brisbane, in the early 1990s
Son Jay was born after moving to Brisbane in 1988, where Mary began a musical theatre group that performed fundraisers for charitable trusts.

Vehicle checks at skifields NZ Police and Waka Kotahi will be out in force this winter, checking that vehicles driving in alpine areas are up to safety standards.
Where art and cuisine meet
Operation Hannah is a multi-site operation targeting all vehicles, but commercial passenger service vehicles (PSVs) in particular such as buses and vans, to ensure they are safe to drive on mountainous roads.
Queenstown’s newest restaurant, ORO at The Carlin, elevates traditional NZ fine dining with delightfully surprising, innovative cuisine. Savour the creative menu produced by our two chefs with Michelin Star experience – award-winning executive chef Thomas Barta and talented head chef Yann Robert. Enjoy the freshest seafood Queenstown has to offer while taking in the stunning lake views. During the July school holidays, specialist Police and district staff, and teams from Waka Kotahi will be at the major ski fields checking vehicles are in a safe condition, compliant and being operated in a safe manner. A deployment of the operation in June found there was “still some room for improvement”, says Inspector Mike Brooklands, manager of Police’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Team. Inspector Brooklands says while more than 90% of passenger vehicles inspected were compliant, action did need to be taken against 15 of the 171 vehicles stopped.
10% locals’ discount for weekday dining Oro Restaurant at The Carlin Boutique Hotel, 43 Hallenstein St Open seven days a week, for breakfast and dinner. Valet parking available.
“The vast majority of operators are doing the right thing, but a few need to up their game when it comes to maintaining their fleet and educating staff,” Brooklands says. “There were 18 faults detected in 14 vehicles, which really isn’t good enough. “It was pleasing, however, that no brake defects were identified in any large passenger vehicles.” There was also a lack of adequate attention to logbooks in some cases, with 10 infringement notices and eight warning issued. In addition, Police found that 44 drivers did not know about the Alpine Code of Practice, which was established by the Bus and Coach Association in 2018 to improve passenger safety in alpine areas. “We want everyone operating passenger vehicles, from drivers up to company managers, to take their responsibilities seriously. “This is about ensuring the travelling public are as safe as possible at all times, and we all have a part to play in making sure everyone gets to their destination safe and sound.” Operation Hannah is named after 11-year-old Hannah Francis, who was a passenger on a bus travelling on the Tūroa ski field road in 2018 and was tragically killed when the bus crashed after a brake failure.

Monthly Column Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
Electricity outages, both scheduled and unscheduled, in Queenstown and Clyde are of significant concern, especially as the winter season settles in. The frequent power cuts impact residents’ health and wellbeing, especially the elderly and vulnerable in our communities, and businesses say they negatively affect business continuity. The interruptions to their operations are especially challenging with increased visitor numbers to the area for school holidays. The security of electricity supply has to be addressed urgently. I am in touch with Aurora Chief Executive Richard Fleming about the issue, and we will be meeting shortly to discuss Aurora’s plans for the power network.
03 428 2672 info@ccqt.nz www.ccqt.nz
My advocacy for postal delivery lacking to Hanley’s Farm or Jack’s Point continues too. Just recently I had a letter which I had mailed out to a constituent to welcome them to the electorate, returned with “no delivery point” as a reason by New Zealand Post! It is incomprehensible that in this day and age we do not have a functional postal service in certain areas of our electorate. I am in contact with the New Zealand Post Board to hear about their plans and solutions for mail delivery there. In the meantime, Queenstown has welcomed many to town with a bang, literally! The Welcome to Winter Fireworks extravaganza certainly was spectacular, and the town is still buzzing, which is excellent news for local businesses revenue-wise. I enjoyed attending the Welcome to Winter Chamber Business lunch too. TIME Magazine, a news outlet with over 20 million subscribers, has just named Queenstown as one of the World’s Greatest Places too. They said “it will see the resort feature in the next double issue of TIME, as the only NZ location on this year’s list of 50 extraordinary travel destinations around the world”. This international accolade tops off an action-packed fortnight with the Australian and New Zealand school holidays underway and the Welcome to Winter four-day event attracting thousands of visitors to the area. People are also excited about and looking forward to next month’s Winter Games NZ, and international cricket returning to Queenstown in December. I know that many businesses still face some of the worst staffing shortages in memory. The Government has been slow to address the crisis, and the news that Immigration New Zealand is struggling with processing issues comes as no surprise as lack of forward planning and ineffective immigration settings have become a hallmark of this current regime. Another focus for me remains the health crisis we are experiencing. Southland Hospital is experiencing difficulties with managing increasing patient numbers and a demand for hospital services across the board. The fact that the hospital has been forced to shut its doors to visitors reflects the seriousness of the problem and makes a case for another base hospital to take the pressures off current facilities much stronger. I hope you and your family have taken some time to enjoy the school holidays and fresh snow on the mountains. Stay safe out there.
Arts+Culture The kids are turning up the music in the Whakatipu Basin by Jessica Allen
Turn Up the Music charitable trust is a music school that opened back in 2014. Their ethos is to provide excellence in musical education on an affordable and accessible basis – they have 17 teachers and around 180 students. They offer subsidies for families and this year they’ve started three scholarships, which are fully subsidised. Overall, these add up to more than $25,000 per year. As a charitable trust, most of their funding comes from private donors and people in the community in addition to corporate donors and grant funding, too. This year, Premium Real Estate are sponsoring two of the scholarships. Tiffany Bindon is the General Manager and is passionate about bringing more music to the youth of Whakatipu, and has helped to coordinate the scholarship programme, which is available to primary students. “This year is our first year offering the scholarships. Our plan was to find donors who would like to support one of those students for the whole year because depending on the lessons, there are different prices,” says Bindon. “We recently secured Hamish Walker with Premium Real Estate; he’s covering the full year for two of the students. Depending on how it all goes this year and where the funding is, we may be able to increase that next year. “The process is that the teachers will identify students who are really committed and have a real natural talent for music – the up-and-comers. They will nominate the students which they think fit that criteria, and then we have a subcommittee that will choose which students are awarded the scholarships,” says Bindon. This year’s three scholarships have been awarded to Rina Nakazawa, who just turned 10, Taylah Miller, 11, and Kai Mewburn, also 11. Kai recently performed on stage at the Welcome to Winter festival at Earnslaw Park – he plays guitar. He encourages anyone else his age that wants to get into music to “just go for it!”. “My biggest musical accomplishment is playing at the Winterfest last weekend. I like my tutor, Matty Baker, who gives me lots of knowledge about guitar and music. He inspires me to get better,” says Kai. Taylor is a singer/songwriter, who is also learning guitar so she can accompany herself. She’s getting ready to perform at an upcoming Ukrainian fundraiser. Her biggest musical accomplishment so far is having one of her original songs recorded. “Music helps lots of people with stress, so the music I create might help people too. Music is magical and brings happiness to lots of people, and there are so many types of music that you can play,” says Taylah. Rina recently performed violin at the Matariki festival event in Arrowtown. Her teacher is Claire Forester, and Rina is really enjoying practicing,
From left to right: Kai, Taylah, Rina
learning new songs, and challenging herself. “I love when people watch and listen to my performance, and my favourite thing about Turn Up the Music is my lovely teachers helping me. My biggest accomplishment so far was playing at an event, Mānawatia a Matariki,” says Rina. Turn Up the Music also run an outreach programme where they offer workshops and arrange performances at the primary schools for students. They have a violin performance coming up with the Sydney Arts Quartet, who will be doing a workshop with violin students – it’s expected around 20 students will attend. “Each year we get contacted by different performers who are going to come and perform in town – they’ll ask ‘would you like us to do a workshop or some form of outreach for your students?’. For example, during the Whakatipu Music Festival, the concert band, which is all brass students, got a chance to perform during the festival and had a master workshop with a flautist who worked on their technique and performance,” says Bindon. Turn Up the Music offers a range of music lessons for all ages. You can find out more about how to get involved and the initiatives they offer at turnupthemusic.co.nz
