Are we solving or creating road chaos?

It always good to get a look at a programme update as announcements and releases often gloss over the detail for the spin. And the devil, as they say, is in the detail. So, I’ve read the latest Kā Huanui a Tāhuna update with interest, that covers the roading package for Queenstown. I’m all in favour of increasing public transport’s attractiveness, encouraging biking and the like, to get more cars off the roads. I’m not pro car and anti-public transport. However, from reading the April update, I struggle to see how our transport problems are going to be greatly improved by adding 16 sets of traffic lights, bus lanes, a new intersection in Frankton, and a roundabout. We need to recognise that major investment is required to respond to Queenstown’s traffic growth, or we are creating a recipe for ongoing traffic chaos. The district’s population is growing by about 20% every three years. By 2025 we’ll have a population approaching 57,000, which is half the size of Dunedin. The report recognises that, and that traffic is an issue which is only going to get worse. But it actually states it is not focused at all on increasing space for private vehicles on the road, which seems to ignore some fundamental truths. Public transport doesn’t work for everyone. It doesn’t work for tradies, or businesspeople visiting multiple clients, or for commuters in from Wanaka and elsewhere, or for cross-network trips, from say Lake Hayes Estate to Arthurs Point. Not everyone lives within a bus trip of Five Mile or the CBD. It doesn’t work for the weekly grocery trip or time-poor parents dropping the kids at school before work. It will take a major redesign to make public transport effective, and Otago Regional Council are to be applauded for a small step in this direction by listening to Arrowtown parents and changing the timetable for this term so kids can travel after-school to Queenstown Events Centre. That alone will take 50 cars off the road. And remember, pre-Covid we had “one resident per 34 international visitors”. Hundreds of rental cars are lined up in Remarkables Park, ready to hit the roads again. The $115m package is welcome because public transport is part of the solution, but it’s not the whole solution. There needs to be capacity for cars too, including over the Shotover River, along with multistorey parking, car share schemes, park-and-ride, and easy bike and pedestrian routes, minimising the hills, leading to bike hubs in Frankton and downtown. Traffic flow is challenging in the area, the geography isn’t kind to road planners but that’s not an excuse to ignore reality. Cars aren’t going away anytime soon and deliberately not improving roads for private and shared vehicles is a disaster waiting to happen. David Gibbs | Queenstown Media Group

Haki te kura takes to the lake by Paul Taylor

Coastguard Queenstown has a new high-speed rescue boat, named after the first person to swim across Lake Wakatipu according to local legend. The 9-metre Rayglass Protector RIB, powered by twin 225hp Mercury outboard engines, was a chase boat in last year’s America’s Cup. Now, she will help save lives on New Zealand’s third largest lake, patrolling the 80km-long Lake Wakatipu from her mooring at Queenstown Marina, a stone’s throw from Coastguard Queenstown’s new base. The boat was officially christened Haki te kura at a ceremony at the marina on Friday. In the Māori legend, Haki te kura, the daughter of Ngati Mamoe chief Tu Wiri Roa, swam from Queenstown Gardens Peninsula to Refuge Point (Te Ahi-aHakitekura), beneath Cecil Peak, where she lit a fire to show she’d made it. Queenstown Airport’s sustainability manager Natalie Reeves came up with the name. The airport has been Coastguard Queenstown’s major sponsor for 11 years. “As we think about these people taking care of our shores and of other people in our community, it seemed only appropriate look at the past members and draw strength from them,” she said at the ceremony. All 26 support and chase boats from the America’s Cup are being reconditioned to become part of Coastguard New Zealand’s fleet, in a $9.8 million project backed by a lottery grant and local sponsors. Haki te kura cost upwards of $500k and was refitted by the Rayglass team, who spent up to 300 hours on the vessel, adding the latest tech. It features radar sonar, 360-degree spotlights, loudspeakers, stretchers, first aid equipment, window demisters, suspension seats, and a full array of Waste not, want not for Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult as he gives the vessel a splash of Amisfield’s finest, donated by the winery

screens and in-cabin switch gear. She replaces Coastguard Queenstown’s dated 8.5m Naiad jet boat, which it has operated since 2008, and is now up for sale. Coastguard New Zealand regional manager Cheryl Moffat said the project highlights the “true community spirit” behind Coastguard New Zealand. “It’s incredible to think that we were watching these boats on the Hauraki Gulf keeping up with ET NZ and Luna Rossa during the Americas’ Cup, meanwhile knowing all the time that they were going to come in save lives here in this community.” Moffat said there is a “huge sense of pride” over the project, as it means Coast Guard volunteers “have the right tools and equipment they need to enhance their ability to deliver on our mission of saving lives”. She thanked the volunteers for their time and talent. “Without your commitment in the support of your families, allowing you time away to do this, lives would not be saved.” Coastguard Queenstown generally has between 20 to 30 volunteers, including ‘wet crew’ and administration volunteers. In the 12 months to June 2021, they put in 2,660 volunteer hours and rescued 13 people from the lake. Its cold temperatures make a quick response paramount, and Haki te kura can speed across its waters at about 40 knots. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult had the honour of pouring champagne on the vessel at the christening ceremony, describing it as an insurance policy, something it’s good to have but never want to need. “So, I hope it serves you well, but I hope not too frequently,” Boult said.

COMMUNITY NOTES What Next For The QAC Building? Feedback on the future status of the Stanley Street Queenstown Arts Centre building is being sought to determine its longevity at the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Street in the town centre. The building is listed as a strategic asset, and therefore any change to its use requires special consultation and submissions from the public and a hearing. THE FUTURE OF THE STANLEY STREET SITE The Stanley Street site has been identified as the preferred location for a new community heart with new council offices and a variety of new cultural facilities including a performing arts centre for the district. This is called Project Manawa The current Arts Centre sits on this land and is not considered fit for purpose. WHERE WILL THE ARTS CENTRE GO? Last year the 3 Lakes Cultural Trust secured a lease at Remarkables Park Town Centre in Frankton to develop a community arts and culture hub, ‘Te Atamira’. As part of this, it was envisioned that the Arts Centre moves there from mid-to-late May. That leaves the buildings vacant and QLDC proposes to remove them as strategic assets enabling it to remove the buildings. TOWN CENTRE PARKING With an extreme shortage of public parking in the CBD it’s proposed the land is turned into a carpark for the short term until the new council offices and Project Manawa are built. Effectively this replaces the ‘old’ Ballarat Street carparking which is now being used as an area for construction crews building the arterial road.

Option 2 – Do not remove building from the Schedule of Assets (status quo). QLDC will retain the building. However, the opportunity of repurposing the building could be limited, as is, the opportunity to utilise the land. If you’ve got an opinion now is the time to make a submission. Go to letstalk@qldc.govt.nz before the 29th May.

WAO’s Climate Action Initiative a Success Over the last few months over 20 local businesses from around the region have taken part in the first Climate Action Initiative [CAI], a programme that aims to provide interested local businesses and schools the tools for calculating their greenhouse gas emissions and developing a plan to reduce them over time. Claire Aitkin-Smith, chair of WAO Aotearoa, the non-profit educator behind WAO says the programme has been an outstanding success. ‘There was such a buzz in the air at the end of the final workshop. Businesses were informed and excited to change the way they operate for the better,” she said

Option 1 – Remove the Queenstown Arts Centre building from the Schedule of Assets. This enables council to use the land for the implementation of Project Manawa in the longer term, while also providing for a range of interim uses of the land.

Orbus tweaks timetable for schools by Paul Taylor

Ride sharing platform launches for winter by Tony O’ Regan, Wānaka App

Minor changes to Queenstown bus timetables will be a major help to students and primary school pupils.

Photo: NZSki

Otago Regional Council, which operates Orbus, has worked with Arrowtown Primary School and Wakatipu High School leaders to alter routes.

Fifty children a day from Arrowtown will be able to travel by bus to afterschool sports activities at Queenstown Events Centre, due to a small timetable and route change. And, for Wakatipu High School students who live in Jack’s Point and Hanley’s Farm, the route 4 bus will take a detour in the afternoons to pick them up, which means they will no longer face a long wait at the Frankton Bus interchange. Both changes begin in term two and are only on school days. Doug Rodgers, Transport Manager, said ORC was pleased to be able to help the schools out. “This not only helps the communities out, it also helps ORC meet our objectives for reducing network pressure as stated in the Regional Public Transport Plan, “ Rodgers says. Arrowtown Primary School parent, Kris Jarvis, said she and school staff had worked with the ORC on the changes, which means pupils can get to the Events Centre without parents having to drive them. “This will take many cars off the road over the course of a week. It will also help minimise chaos outside the school gate.” To help maintain scheduling, the Jack’s Point 2.55pm only bus will not pick up from the bus stops at Tucker Beach Road and Quail Rise. All other services throughout the day will remain as currently scheduled. For more information on updated services follow Orbus on Facebook and check out the school buses page on the ORC website School buses (orc. govt.nz)

A new ride sharing platform to help snowsports enthusiasts find a ride to their favourite ski resort is launching in time for winter. Snow Riders NZ is a free car-sharing social network for New Zealand skiers and snowboarders where members can search for a ride up or down the mountain or offer spare seats to others. ”Basically, it is a social networking ride sharing platform,” Snow Riders NZ founder Ben Mac said. “Members have a profile, they can friend, they can chat, they can communicate with each other.” Ben said he gave a presentation at a Ski Areas Association of New Zealand (SAANZ) conference to explain how Snow Riders NZ can help ease transport issues at ski resorts. “They have an issue with car park capacity and access roads and things like that and they’d like to increase the headcount of visitors getting to ski fields and they’re not going to do that with single occupancy vehicles.” Ben said the idea was to help like-minded snow enthusiasts connect with each other, making it easy to find a ride to the mountain and to help the environment by saving on greenhouse gas emissions when traveling to ski fields. “People need to be more conscious around how they get to the ski resort, be more eco-friendly, and we hope to build a community around that,” he said. People can register on the platform at snowriders.nz or download the Snowriders NZ mobile app from the app store.

Disposable masks could be used to improve concrete With the pervasive single-use masks during the pandemic now presenting an environmental problem, researchers have demonstrated the idea of incorporating old masks into a cement mixture to create stronger, more durable concrete. In a paper published in the journal, Materials Letters, a Washington State University research team showed that the mixture using mask materials was 47% stronger than commonly used cement after a month of curing. “These waste masks actually could be a valuable commodity if you process them properly,” said Xianming Shi, professor and interim chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the corresponding author on the paper. “I’m always looking out for waste streams, and my first reaction is ‘how do I turn that into something usable in concrete or asphalt?’” Production of cement is a carbon-intensive process, responsible for as much as 8% of carbon emissions worldwide. Microfibers are already sometimes added to cement concrete to strengthen it, but they’re expensive. The microfiber-reinforced concrete can potentially reduce the amount of cement needed for a project or make the concrete last longer, saving carbon emissions as well as money for builders and owners. Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup begins crucial product launch The first all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning rolled off the assembly line in Detroit last Tuesday, with a great deal riding on its launch for both the company and electric vehicles overall. Interest and demand have been very strong, with Ford taking 200,000 preorders for the electric version of the pickup that has been the nation’s best-selling vehicle for nearly a half century. But despite the interest from buyers, it’s not a given that Ford will be able to pull off the launch without problems. The automaker has had repeated issues in recent years with the launch of new versions of its most popular vehicles, most notably the 2019 launch of the Ford Explorer SUV. Quality problems with that launch cost the company billions and played a big role in the departure of two executives. “There’s a lot riding on it,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Cox Automotive. “Ford has had its troubles with launches and now added to that there are all of these supply chain issues.” Virtually all automakers have had to scale back production of new vehicles due to a shortage of computer chips and other parts and materials, often temporarily shutting factories. Those production bottlenecks have led to limited supply of vehicles, which in turn has resulted in record high car prices. CNN Business

The ‘da Vinci of Violins,’ Handmade in 1736, Could Fetch More Than $10 Million at Auction It’s not often a violin evokes a Renaissance polymath, but one French auction house is touting such a fiddle. The centuries-old stringed instrument, which will go under the gavel at Aguttes this June, has been labeled the Leonardo da Vinci of violins on account of the meticulous craftsmanship featured within. Hailing from Cremona, Italy, circa 1736, the maple-backed violin was handmade by the revered Italian luthier Giuseppe Guarneri at the peak of his career. Not only that, the instrument has been in the hands of French virtuoso Régis Pasquier for the past 20 years and has accompanied him in the world’s most venerated concert halls. “There are many violins, but this one is like selling a Rembrandt, a Goya or even a Leonardo da Vinci painting,” Sophie Perrine of Aguttes told Reuters. Indeed, Guarneri is considered the greatest violin maker of all time alongside Antonio Stradivari. His stringed creations were finished to the highest standards and are today synonymous with quality and longevity in the classical music world. They’re incredibly rare, too; Guarneri made just 150 violins in his lifetime, which makes them especially coveted among both players and collectors. In fact, Aguttes says that no Guarneri “Del Gesu” violin has appeared at auction for more than a decade. Robb Report

Airport governance wrangle continues by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Airport bosses and district councillors continue to thrash out who exerts the greatest control over plans for the future. Queenstown Airport Corporation board chair Adrienne Young-Cooper and chief executive Glen Sowry presented the company’s draft annual plan, its Statement of Intent (SOI), to councillors on Thursday. The document has been a battleground in recent years, as councillors have attempted to bring the QAC board to heel, sparked by public backlash over expansion plans. QLDC is the major shareholder in QAC, with 75.01%, and the company is a council-controlled organisation. This latest SOI includes plans on the airport’s next masterplan. But there is disagreement on how the public consultation process on the plan is managed, and ultimately who has the final sign-off. Young Cooper says QAC wants to lead the consultation on the “complex and highly technical document”. Residents are a “hugely important stakeholder group”, but QAC also has to consult with the Civil Aviation Authority, Airways, airlines, general aviation operators, commercial tenants, and the business community.

QAC board chair Adrienne Young-Cooper

It must also satisfy important safety obligations, both aviation and seismic and meet regulatory and compliance obligations. Young Cooper also said the board considered it would not be able to uphold the various legal, regulatory and governance duties and responsibilities if it did not formally approve the masterplan at a board meeting itself. The SOI, therefore, talks of QLDC ‘endorsing’ the plan, rather than formally approving it. But Cr Esther Whitehead said the council has the same concerns about meeting its responsibilities. “It’s just that QAC board doesn’t like it, because it’s challenging. And I get that, it is challenging, and it should be challenging. “I disagree with their position that there are functional challenges in a workable process to consult. I think it’s challenging, but I think we can do it.” Whitehead said otherwise QLDC puts itself in a “highly liable position”. She was supported by several other councillors on her points. She reminded councillors they had agreed on February 3 that the masterplan and strategic plan must be formally agreed by council before implementation, and that QLDC lead consultation.

Cr Esther Whitehead

In any event, the council needed to only ‘receive the draft SOI’ at this stage. Councillors agreed to meet to discuss feedback they can give to QAC, before it presents the final version in June. Speaking in the public forum, Mark Kunath, told councillors “the buck stops with you” and they needed to figure out how QAC could meet their requirements. But the airport board’s push for more autonomy received support from Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Ruth Stokes and Destination Queenstown chair Richard Thomas, also speaking in the public forum. Some 72,895 passengers passed through the airport in March, all domestic, with 833 flights arriving or departing from ZQN. That’s down 23% on last March, but the 12-month passenger figures are up 6% to 1,093,429 million. And they’re expected to soar of the coming months, after international borders reopening at midnight on Sunday, although there are no direct flights yet.

A stunning Anzac Day at the top of the hill in Arrowtown. Brilliant gold leaves and our bright blue sky made me see Ukrainian flags everywhere, and I couldn’t help but think how lucky we were to be celebrating soldiers who’d fought in a war over a century ago, while those poor Ukrainians right now can barely imagine the peace we enjoy here. I was invited by Olivia Egerton to come and see Te Atamira the new cultural centre in Remarkables Park. To be honest, I wasn’t an enthusiastic visitor as I think there’s something very wrong with the council wanting to pull down all the perfectly good community buildings in Queenstown, but I was really impressed with the many different spaces that can be used for pretty well every cultural group imaginable- fantastic dance studios, art galleries, loads of music spaces for practice and performance - look up the online What’s On Autumn guide for Te Atamira starting this month. There are all sorts of workshops happening in conjunction with an art exhibition of huge, soft, bright bubbles and they all sound intriguing. Olivia has done a great job of pulling it all together and finding the funding. There’s still room for any generous locals to become founding members, so do contact her at olivia@teatamira. nz. There are some other very exciting cultural projects in the pipeline and I’m having huge difficulty keeping my mouth shut - there’s a reason my family call me the foghorn. As soon as I’m unmuzzled, I’ll let you know. We’re having an asado (an Argentinian barbeque) to celebrate with some of our Argentinian friends who have FINALLY got full residency visas now. It’s been a very long wait for so many of them. The local businesses are desperate for staff, and so many clever young people from other countries are desperate to come and work here - it seems crazy that we are still not letting them in. All the smart countries in the world are doing their darnedest to attract educated young people, and we should be one of those countries. Instead, I keep hearing about our own smart young people leaving our shores. I put a notice on Facebook saying I wanted to sell the Jeep designed for extreme off-road driving, that my husband kindly (but without consulting me) bought for me. As I am a little old lady with no sense of adventure, I mentioned that, and my very rude friend (ex-friend now) said not only am I not little or old, but that he’s not sure I’m a lady, either. The NERVE of it...

I hope you and your family have enjoyed the beautiful marvels of the Queenstown-Lakes District these school holidays. This year, I attended the Waikaka and Drummond ANZAC services. They were both very special occasions, and hopefully, you too were able to join one of the many commemorations in honour of those who sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. It’s also been two weeks of parliamentary recess, and I took the opportunity to connect with various organisations and people locally. The Salvation Army tells me that the organisation has seen an increase in people seeking assistance with life basics. People are saying they are finding it hard to make ends meet. Inflation has hit a new 30-year high of 6.9 per cent and has contributed to the rising living costs. This silent thief in your pocket refers to a general increase in the prices of everyday essentials like food and fuel but with a decrease in the value of your money. Housing and rental costs are significant issues locally. The Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust is doing great work with its housing developments in the district to support low-income families in housing.

ST JOHN HEALTH SHUTTLE Operates from Queenstown to Invercargill, (returning the same day) Monday to Friday for health related appointments for more information and bookings please call: 0800 103 046

They showed Chris Bishop MP and me around their Toru apartments, the 44-lot development, the Alps View development, the Tewa Banks site in Arrowtown and their flagship project, Nerin Square. It is critically important that the Government commit to the principle of Inclusionary Zoning in the District. Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust’s unique leasehold model and Secure Home programme will provide long term housing affordability, and tenure assisted home ownership. Hector Egger NZ also gave us a fascinating insight into their Willow Pond project. They manufacture high-performance, energy-efficient homes made up of high-tech timber structures and prefab timber panels. I’m working with key community stakeholders on petitioning the Government to make changes to the Social Security Act 2018 to ensure the legislation meets the realities of population changes in the district when applying for the Accommodation Supplement. Budget Day this year is on 19 May. This is when the Government will outline how they intend to spend our hard-earned taxes. A shortage of workers especially in our farming and snow industries means that small to medium businesses (SMEs) are struggling to keep afloat and they will be anxious to hear what the Government’s plans are to alleviate the shortages. I plan to host a series of post-budget meetings to explore what their Budget 2022/23 will mean for businesses and workers. More information on dates and venues will be published on my website and social media. I hope you can join me there.

Auckland airport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui told RNZ’s Morning Report the international terminal has been buzzing, and there have been ‘movie scene moments’ as people reunite. “It’s been fantastic actually you see a lot of those movie scene moments where people are reconnecting with family and friends after a long two year period.” She said there will be arrivals from the US, Singapore, Fiji and Australia today.

Licenced under the REAA 2008

“Today, we’ve got 43 international arriving and departing flights in Auckland and its about 9000 customers we’re expecting through today.” Auckland Airport has brought back about forty staff in the past six months and Hurihanganui said it would boost staffing in the coming months as international flights re-establish. Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran told First-Up almost 1000 people will arrive on the airline’s flights from the US and Fiji today, and the frequency of flights will continue to rise into winter.

“It’s a difficult one to predict accurately but we’re planning is that when we get to July, getting into our next set of school holidays, we’re starting to get more and more places open and the schedule is starting to resemble something a bit closer to pre-Covid. “It will just be a sensible, gradual ramp up to that for the next few months.” He said the airline was working to reunite its fleet of dedicated international aircraft, which have been grounded in the US. “We’re actually in the process of bringing several of those back out of the desert now and getting them reanimated to get ready to fly later this year.” Yesterday, Associate Minister for Covid-19 Response Ayesha Verrall announced a trial of Covid-19 LAMP tests. Foran said the airline’s crew and staff would be involved in the LAMP test pilot. “The LAMP test is a test which is more accurate than what you’re going to get from a rapid antigen test, less complicated and costly that what you get from a PCR. “The way we look at this is it’s a great tool to have in the tool box if we’re going to deal with another significant pandemic and we don’t have to go to the extent of potentially locking down the country again.” Foran said the airline would support a move away from pre-departure Covid-19 testing as a requirement.

CATH HANNA

Cath and Matt Hanna are long time locals- they moved here in 1998 from Wellington and set up Joe’s Garage behind the old crazy paving post office in Queenstown. Coffee machines were barely here pre-Hanna (unless you call those ghastly Kona ones coffee) and all of a sudden, the locals were hooked. With only four tables, it was packed to the gunwales as we all started drinking macchiatos and cappuccinos. Cath has one of those brilliant brains that not only remember names and faces, but exactly what coffee they drink and as you put one foot in the door, she’d already have the order in. There is a real art to knowing what customers want, before they even know they want it. Cath and Matt are stars with food- they invented the Sweetie (Matt’s nickname for Cath) which is a roll filled with crispy bacon, a fried egg and a splash of Rocket Fuel and aioli. It was hopeless trying to diet once the Sweetie became an option - it was hard to know if the espresso coffee or the Sweeties were dragging us all into town each morning for our fix. Christmas and New Year were terrible - CLOSED for two weeks. Joe’s Garage addicts were devastated. Before long, they realised that Arrowtown needed coffee too, so they opened up where ChopShop is now. An instant success. One morning, the great late John Martin came and sat down. Cath put his coffee in front of him and asked if he wanted anything else. Yes, he did. He wanted to buy Joe’s Garage. So, they sold. Joe’s Garage is now all over the country and still much loved.

They took a couple of years off to decide what was next. Cath’s idea of time off is not like anyone else’s. Having her around makes life very exciting. Who else thinks of organising Bollywood dancing lessons and having a daft and giggling gaggle of middle-aged woman put on a performance? She organised fabulous fairs where everyone could rent a little stand and sell secondhand clothes, discovered amazing cooks from all over the globe and had them teaching cooking classes in local homes with big kitchens. We learnt how to make tamarind margaritas and Lebanese fig jam and had a ball. She set up a consignment shop for secondhand clothes before secondhand clothes were even a thing. Queenstown Resort College had only just opened, and they knew that the best person to set up their cafe was Cath. They couldn’t have been more right. Suddenly all the locals were there. Then Matt and their daughters set up Motogrill in Shotover Street. Same thing. Wellington lured the Hannas back for a few years, but now they’re home again and Cath realised the community needed club sandwiches (and vibrators, but that’s another story) so she set up the Club Sandwich Company, and delivers impossibly pretty platters of very delicious, easy to eat sammies. As many have said, you hardly need flowers at your party, as Cath’s platters are so beautiful. She also caters to hungry businessmen and builders with her famous man sandwiches which have to be preordered.

A truly infectious smile - even this photo is probably making you smile, too

She’s hard to pin down, as she’s always off preparing and delivering, but if you see a woman with waist long silver hair tied up in a bun, wearing ummm... very practical clothes, dark sweatpants, baggy jersey and a beautiful smile, that’s Cath.

Police haven’t dismissed idea of Lake Wakatipu body recovery by RNZ

Police say they still aim to look in the depths of Lake Wakatipu for the body of a skydiver if they can.

and the distress the distance of not being able to be with him at his resting place has caused.”

American Tyler Nii, 27, was never found after he landed in the lake when a tandem jump went wrong four years ago, in January 2018.

After Nii’s death, and that of a woman who died while skydiving near Muriwai Beach in Auckland in March, there have been calls for rule changes for skydiving companies operating near water. Neither firm had rescue boats on the water for the dives.

Police said while they are no longer searching for him, they do want to return him to his family. “Police continue to liaise with Tyler’s family, and respect his family’s wishes to do everything they can to recover him,” Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis said in a statement.

However, inquiries by RNZ showed the new recommendations had not yet passed their first hurdle toward potentially being enacted. - RNZ

Two years ago, police rejected the Nii family’s attempts to bring over a submersible drone from the US to search, and said this was not technically feasible at such depths. “The Police Dive squad continue to investigate any equipment that may become available in New Zealand that can search at the depths it is believed that Tyler’s body will be,” Inglis said. “Police carried out extensive searches for Tyler at the time and suspending any search is never an outcome we want. This was a difficult search given the depth of Lake Wakatipu.” The lake bed is mostly about 370m underwater, but the place Nii went missing drops to 400m. By comparison, the Sky Tower stand 328 metres tall, he said. “It is always our intention to be able to provide closure to any family who has lost a loved one. “We are aware of the impact Tyler’s death has had on his family and friends

Tyler Nii, 27, did not survive after a double parachute failure over Lake Wakatipu in January 2018

Arts+Culture New orchestra promises light-hearted fun by Bethany Rogers

“I’ve played in bands before and I had this feeling that there was an opportunity to play lighter stuff. Music that’s more accessible than classical music, that might enable new audiences to enjoy orchestral music. Familiarity breeds success.” Sheena bought orchestral arrangements for a range of popular music pieces, from Tico Tico to a Meatloaf Medley. “We’re playing stuff that people will recognise, something that will make them smile. It’s easy to enjoy, something to tap your foot along to – nothing too dramatic or complex to play!” Sheena says the response so far has been great with local music stalwarts like Emma Wilson lending their support.

A new orchestra based in Queenstown is offering classical musicians a chance to play light-hearted and fun music. Orchestra founder and violinist Sheena Naughton says the Queenstown Party Orchestra aims to help local musicians to play together and have fun. “The idea’s been in my head for a long, long time. “It’s difficult as an orchestral player to play with others in Queenstown – that’s because there’s no orchestra here. There is the Central Otago orchestra based in Alexandra, which is wonderful to be part of, but it is quite a long way to go for rehearsals. “I slowly started meeting other orchestra players in Queenstown and a lot of them were put off going to Alexandra because they couldn’t get there because of work or family life or whatever. They had a similar problem to me: they’d join an orchestra in Queenstown if there was one, but there wasn’t.” Sheena realised that if she wanted to join an orchestra closer to home, she’d have to stop wishing for one and start planning. “I think the orchestra in Alexandra is fantastic and I did not want to compete with that. It’s under brilliant leadership, it’s classically focused and the conductor pushes us to play harder stuff than we think we can. So I wanted the orchestra in Queenstown to be complementary, not competing with this one.

The Queenstown Party Orchestra is hoping to grow as word begins to spread. There are cellists, violinists, a keyboard player and French horn, oboe and trumpet players – but Sheena says they’re welcome to orchestral players of all sorts. Anyone who considers themselves an intermediate player, who can read music and/or has practice playing with others is encouraged to join. “The Queenstown Party Orchestra is all about having fun; musicians having fun and audiences having fun. That’s not for everybody – some people do enjoy their serious classical music. But there’s fun to be had here and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” Rehearsals are held on Thursday nights at 7:30 pm, at Kip McGrath school (4 Mountain Ash Drive, Frankton). For more information, email Sheena Naughton at sheena@sheenanaughton.co.nz

What’s On NZ Music Month - Billy Carey As a young singer/songwriter from the Whakatipu, Billie Carey has grown up surrounded by the music and artistic community in Queenstown. Music has been a part of Billie’s life from the very start. Billie began composing music at age seven, inspired by soundtracks for films her father was producing. After having her music performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at age eight, her horizons only got bigger by the time she moved to high school, where she found a love for writing lyrics and more pop-influenced songs.

Since then, Billie has won the nationwide Play It Strange 2021 Youthtown Songwriting competition, has been a finalist in the Lion Foundation Songwriting competition multiple times, and received the 2021 David Richwhite Lyric Award. She competed and won first place in the Central Otago division of Rockquest and received the Rockquest APRA Lyric Award in 2021. She competes in many local competitions, and participates in every musical extracurricular activity Wakatipu High School has to offer, mentored by the legendary Alison Price. Billie describes her style as indie-pop with a few folk influences, drawing inspiration from artists such as Taylor Swift, Howard Shore, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen. She looks to build a career in film scoring – composing, arranging, and producing music for movies and television. Billie will be showcasing an array of past and new material at her upcoming Te Atamira show Billie. 7. Transfer to serving bowls. Top with extra creme fraiche and micro herbs. Season with pepper and sprinkle with extra chilli flakes. Serve with spiced parmesan croutons. Tip: Keep this one vego by leaving out the bacon and using vegetable stock instead of chicken stock.

There is no denying the power of travel. Getting away, going somewhere different, whether it’s to relax, learn, or visit places that are very different to our own.

Love Sydney Sydney Light rail provide frequent links through the CBD image luke-white

It’s time to tackle the adventure that awaits overseas after two years where it was just not possible. It wasn’t too long ago that a visit to Sydney was just a quick hop across the ditch but that has changed dramatically which was the first thing I noticed after my recent trip to Sydney. Firstly, there is all the paperwork to fill out of which there is quite a bit. None of it too grueling but everything needs to be lined up, with the online forms completed which is currently a two-step process. A digital passenger declaration ap needs to be downloaded and set up followed by the negative RAT test 24 hours before departure. Check the airline websites for the requirements at least a week prior as the requirements are continually changing. We cannot currently fly to Australia directly from Queenstown so via Auckland is the best bet. Auckland International is a ghost town. Nothing is open with very few flights servicing NZ now. Hopefully that will change soon, now the next phase of border reopening is happening. I’d been looking forward to seeing Sydney again, to revisit old favourites and check out a fresh mix of new attractions after 30 months away. I wasn’t disappointed and it’s got me hankering for more. One of the greatest things about Sydney is the world class shopping. The CBD has the major international brands and all in one neat tidy area. While locally there is much bemoaning the lack of people in the CBD, I didn’t notice. To me it was buzzing, but at a scale where the service in the shops was noticeably more relaxed, friendly and welcoming. The Queen Victoria Building in George Street, known locally as QVB, is a famous historical building that is home to a wonderful variety of boutique stores and cafes. Completed in 1898, QVB was a monument to Queen Victoria, it has an interesting history that has seen it ruined, almost demolished, and finally restored to its original beauty. On previous trips it was so busy it was worth avoiding, but this time it was charming, with locals scuttling between Town Hall subway station and their offices while shoppers browsed. Few of the stores had changed and after stocking up on much needed supplies you can’t get in Queenstown, they will be able to afford this months’ rent and then some.

When I was in Sydney last, the CBD was a construction site and had almost come to a standstill. Something like our own downtown currently does. The cities light rail was being built and one side of the city was cut off from the other for over 4 years. The result however is fantastic. A pedestrian friendly boulevard with trams whisking 450 people through the heart of the city every 4 minutes. After an enormous backlash during the construction the trams appear very well patronised and QVB - Boutique shopping at its best. Image Hugo Kruip

a really efficient way to get from one end of the city to the other. Sydney already has a really efficient public transport system with trains under the city and buses and now trams above. It’s a breeze for visitors to get around. Many of the eateries have changed as Covid took its toll. I was keen to try one of the newer venues and was recommended Bar Tottis, on George Street between Circular Quay and Martin Place. The ambience is very chic and buzzing on the wet Thursday night we were there. Even though we were eating very early, at 6pm the place was heaving – ohh and not a mask to be seen. The menu is built around their famed wood-fired bread which is served alongside an extended selection of antipasti and incredible snacks. The drinks list is predominantly retro classics, and wines that revolve around Italian varietals. Foodwise the antipasti includes scallop crudo, pickled octopus and gooey baked tomino cheese. There’s grilled scampi in seaweed butter, haloumi with nectarines, and smoked pork jowl with chili. Deserts are amazing including their beloved Neapolitan ice cream sandwich or alternatively their very impressive blood orange sorbet sandwich. Sydney is rapidly rebuilding its economy. Big events are back enticing locals and visitors into the city. Handa Opera has just completed a new production of The Phantom of the Opera on the harbour. LUMA’s been cancelled. Get ready for the return of

LUMIFY By Tim Buckley and the LUMA Team

It’s been a long haul for everyone but we’re hoping the start of Winter will be a marker for Queenstown’s tentative steps back into the light. What better way to kick things off than with a downtown weekend of light installations, projection artworks and performance. Queen’s Birthday Weekend will bring the return of LUMIFY which is a smaller pop-up event aimed at filling the gap left by LUMA’s year off. LUMA’s Chairman, Duncan Forsyth summed it up perfectly: “We’ve been beavering away in the background to come up with some ideas. We still really want to deliver for our community by supporting businesses, residents and visitors during what is a hard time for everyone.” The LUMIFY concept, was first introduced in 2020 when LUMA Queenstown was cancelled due to the first lockdown. “LUMIFY is all about community interaction and engagement and we hope locals will get behind this initiative. We want to bring a festival-like atmosphere to the town centre, but in a safe way. LUMIFY aims to entice people to come into town and support our local hospo scene which has had it tough. Stop in at the cafes, pop into the pub for a pint or grab a bite to eat before coming to see the installations.” LUMIFY LANEWAYS aims to bring a touch of light to Cow Lane, Searle Lane, Church Lane and Lower Beech Street and runs from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th June LUMIFY DOWNTOWN will focus on other areas of the town centre and waterfront and bring some illumination into the CBD throughout June. The aim is to bring people back into town, get them mingling and supporting local businesses while enjoying the illuminations. LUMIFY SCHOOLS PROGRAMME will showcase the work of our local creative students. Each year we have an ongoing series of schools projects which contribute to LUMA Gardens. This work is completed throughout the year as part of the schools curriculum and we will showcase it this year as part of LUMIFY Laneways. Works will also travel to Wanaka during Winter as part of the wider LUMA Schools Project. LUMIFY COMMUNITY Illuminate your neighbourhood. From the start of winter, 1st June onwards to the end of winter. LUMIFY Community is all about participation, fun, and grass roots. We plan to repeat our 2020 campaign aimed at encouraging supporters to bring a bit of LUMA to their neighbourhood. We encourage participation throughout the region and ask our community to LUMIFY their front yard, shop-front, bicycle, dog or business. “We hope our Queenstown community brings LUMIFY home, as they did in 2020, and light up their neighbourhood, their back-yards, their driveways, their cars. This is about grassroots contribution and we are pretty excited about what our community can do when given the challenge.”

“We are lucky to have a wealth of talent within our LUMA community and have artists lined up to contribute. The team will be lighting up facades of buildings, projection mapping, adding festoon lighting and setting up mini pop-up events. And it doesn’t stop at lighting; several street performers and dance troops are also getting involved.’’ Forsyth says some of the creative installations will hopefully remain after the long weekend. Businesses are also being encouraged to get stuck in and support the initiative. A number are already keen and ideas include coloured mocktails, funky street food, vibrant shop windows and colourful staff outfits. Forsyth took the opportunity to thank funders. “When we cancelled LUMA we looked at a number of options and opportunities as to how we could still do something for our community but LUMIFY is only made possible through the loyal and generous support of our funders and the local community.” More info at LUMIFY.nz

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Speakers announced for mountain festival by Paul Taylor

NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with a line-up of inspirational adventurers from New Zealand and Australia.

Paul Pritchard

This year’s line-up includes Kiwi mountaineer Alastair McDowell who will speak about his incredible mission to New Zealand’s 24 highest mountains above 3000 metres in a continuous, human-powered, 31-day transalpine journey. Lake Hāwea’s Tanya Bottomley’s talk will cover her traverse of the 45th Parallel, an extraordinary, self-supported 600km journey following the circle of latitude that is 45 degrees south of the Earth’s equator. And cutting-edge rock climber and mountaineer Paul Pritchard will share how the lessons learned in the mountains got him through a life-changing catastrophic brain injury, sustained while climbing a slender sea stack known as The Totem Pole, in Tasmania. Festival Director Mark Sedon, who founded the festival in 2002 along with his wife Jo, says bringing world-class speakers and adventurers to the Queenstown Lakes to inspire others to partake in safe adventurous activities is what the festival is all about. “I love the way the buzz in the audience quietens as a speaker takes the stage,” Sedon says. Tanya Bottomley

Alastair McDowell

“Then he or she takes us on their journey, whether it’s climbing a far-away mountain, or something here in our backyard. We gasp and laugh, sharing the hardships and joys of someone else’s adventure, gazing at the images on the big screen while enjoying the spoken story. In my mind there’s no doubt our speakers make our event.” Speakers for the book festival include Shaun Barnett who co-wrote the Montana Award-winning Classic Tramping in New Zealand (with Rob Brown) and whose book Tramping, A New Zealand History (with Chris Maclean) was long listed for the 2016 Ockham Book Awards. Barnett is joined by Chris Long, the son of the bestselling authors of A Life on Gorge River and A Wife on Gorge River, who will speak about his book Boy from Gorge River; journalist Hazel Phillips; and photographer Peter Laurensen , as well as Sedon who will speak about his recently published book What Could Possibly Go Wrong? The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival will run in Wānaka from 24 to 29 June, in Queenstown June 30 to July 2, and online in NZ and Australia from June 24 to July 24.

Earlier this month, we wrapped up the latest annual end-of-summer snowline survey over New Zealand’s South Island (Te Waipounamu), providing a birdseye view of how glaciers fared during the past year.

The Zealandia Switch drove rapid global ice retreat 18,000 years ago. Has it switched to a new level? While the Zealandia Switch focuses on global ice retreat for prehistoric times, we think it may also explain what is happening right now with our glaciers.

This collection of aerial photos adds to a near half-century perspective of irrefutable and dramatic climate change impacts on New Zealand’s frozen landscapes. o put it bluntly, New Zealand’s glaciers look emaciated. Another Tasman Sea marine heat wave punctuated the hottest year on record nationally at the close of 2021, bathing the Southern Alps in warmth. That pattern continued into the Southern Hemisphere summer of 2022. As New Zealand’s glaciers continue to feel the heat and shrink, bedrock that has not seen daylight for ages becomes exposed. Basins filled with meltwater begin to multiply across the landscape. In many cases, a ring of dirt and rock around some of New Zealand’s largest lakes marks where ice once reached. Our current research is exploring these exposed rocky ridges to retrace New Zealand’s climate history.

Fingerprints of change in the landscape The ridge-like mounds of rocks retreating glaciers leave behind are called moraines. Directly in front of some of the largest Southern Alps glaciers, fresh moraines circumscribe turquoise-tinted lakes, with ice calving into them. This scene doesn’t leave room for denial of the rapid retreat of ice from the alpine landscape.

Left: The map shows the Lake Ohau and Lake Pukaki moraines, with their ages expressed in thousands of years before present. Right: Lake Pukaki (A) and Lake Ohau (B) moraines indicate ice rapidly retreated 18,000 years ago. Map: David Barrell, GNS Science; Photos: Aaron Putnam & George Denton, University of Maine, CC BY-SA

Clues from a nearly sunken continent Glacial geologists use rare chemical isotopes trapped in rocks to trace the history of Earth’s surface with a technique called cosmogenic surface exposure dating. This method measures how long rocks found on the surface today have been exposed to cosmic rays. Boulders that have been carried inside flowing ice have zero exposure history. When they are dropped onto a moraine and exposed to cosmic rays from outer space, their “cosmic clock” starts and the rare isotopes begin to accumulate inside minerals in the rock.

The Mueller, Hooker and Tasman lakes are surrounded by moraines, in Mt Cook National Park. Andrew Lorrey, CC BY-SA

Downstream, more extensive moraines are wrapped like ribbons around massive lake basins that lie along the edge of the Southern Alps. Some of these landforms stretch for miles, and they illustrate ice was much more extensive in the past. We know the processes that formed those moraines must have been similar to what we observe today. But how old are they? What happened to the massive ice that was once there, and why did it retreat? A new mechanism that explains a rapid shift at the end of the last ice age – called the Zealandia Switch – is founded on New Zealand moraine evidence. This new hypothesis is challenging a long-held view about why glaciers changed in the recent and distant past.

Once exposure dates for moraine boulders are established, they are linked to detailed maps that outline ice advance and retreat sequences. The major moraines around central Southern Alps lakes – Pukaki, Tekapo and Ōhau – now have hundreds of results showing rapid change happened about 18,000 years ago. Offshore in the Tasman Sea, microfossils from sediment cores indicate ocean currents and boundaries shifted at exactly the same time. Climate modelling can explain the simultaneous land and sea changes through a major switch of Southern Hemisphere westerly winds over the nearlysubmerged Zealandia continent – hence the Zealandia Switch hypothesis. When the Zealandia Switch turns on and spins up the southern westerlies, it helps to promote water vapour export from the tropics and atmospheric circulation patterns that drive warming in both hemispheres. If the Zealandia Switch hypothesis is upheld, then the story about Quaternary ice age origins and their impacts on global climate, plant ecosystems and ancient fauna will need to be rewritten.

Page 27

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

The Zealandia Switch and ice loss Fast forward 18,000 years and the southern winds of change are on the move again. Subtropical waters are being pumped into the Tasman Sea, driving more frequent marine heatwaves. New Zealand’s temperatures are soaring. Atmospheric rivers loaded with tropical moisture are penetrating Antarctic latitudes and bringing record temperatures with them. The current situation has hallmarks of the Zealandia Switch playing an enhanced role – but this time, Earth is in an interglacial rather than an ice age state. The latest Southern Alps glacier research shows austral warm season temperatures and a rising snowline trend are tightly coupled. The rising snowline trend is also accelerating at an alarming pace.

New Zealand’s summer snowline (also known as the New Zealand Equilibrium Line Altitude) has continued to rise in recent years. It is expected to be at least 200m above the 1981-2010 average elevation by next decade. Andrew Lorrey, CC BY-SA

A series of extremely hot years with exceptionally high snowlines that are driving this pattern have been linked to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Similar conclusions have been drawn for the recent acceleration of global ice loss.

The rise of the snowline is accelerating in the Southern Alps. By 2035, many glaciers monitored by NIWA are expected to be approaching extinction. Reproduced from Lorrey et al. (2022), CC BY-SA

These connections raise the possibility that human activities have flicked the Zealandia Switch to a higher level of the “ON” position, and it may remain stuck there for the foreseeable future. If what unfolds is anything similar to when the Zealandia Switch curtailed the ice age during the Last Glacial Termination, we can expect big, fast and global climate reorganisation impacts. The changes ahead may also bring the beginning of the end – a final termination – for many glaciers north and south. Employers scramble to find staff before winter Tuesday May 24th is the day Queenstown Airport returns to international status when Qantas flies in from Sydney for the first time since the Trans-Tasman bubble burst. It won’t be until mid-June that Queenstown will see daily international flights from Air NZ and Jetstar. Meanwhile the race is on to staff up especially in the Tourism and Tourism related sectors. Confidence is high that the town will be welcoming many Aussies to the ski fields and to the cash registers will be ringing across the visitor sectors. Early indications are that the airlines are seeing strong demand. Feedback from tour groups and accommodation sectors is that their bookings are also strong and building. Difference on

Job numbers dip in March Within this environment the March jobfix.co.nz vacancy rate slowed 25% from February. With the limited number of candidates available locally, many roles are not being advertised with businesses limiting their advertising spend until the border reopens in the hope this will increase the candidate pool to fill the roles available. There were 397 jobs advertised across March. Accommodation and Food and Beverage sectors made up 68% of the roles available.

By Sector Construction, Utilities and Transport

Finding candidates to meet that demand is the now the challenge. Local leaders including the mayor is putting pressure on the government to increase the flexibility with visas so the entire experience for visitors is a great one, not just on the slopes. Wages in the district have risen 11.3% per annum indicating the competitiveness in the employment market. Queenstown’s 11.3% wage lift is in stark contrast to the national increase of 7.4% and demonstrates just how desperate the situation has become.

Early indications are that after two years, where traditional seasonality was disrupted by the response to the pandemic, the first quarter of 2022 is returning to a more familiar flow despite a 35% decline in advertised jobs numbers in that time.
