Housing progress?
What cost $1.4 million of your money and has so far proved about as useful as a chocolate teapot, an ashtray on a motorbike, a condom machine at the Vatican? Queenstown Lakes District Council spent a fortune on the Ladies Mile Masterplan and councillors debated for hours over whether it should be adopted. It was a bit hard to get your head around at the time. The council was creating a plan for 2400 homes, plus schools, community facilities and walking tracks, basically so landowners couldn’t just build another Shotover Country, with its sought-after, liveable homes, primary school and walking tracks. Ok, so I understand the need for pockets of greater density, more community facilities and transport links, but as the masterplan process was in motion, QLDC approved the luxury Koko Ridge development on Ladies Mile. It comprises 26 sections of 2000sqm each, priced upwards of $1m. Meanwhile, the Government has fast-tracked the medium-density Flint’s Park developments, which will be up to 700 homes, including town houses, and a primary school. QLDC owns the huge former Walker family property along the Mile, with its house soon to be remodelled into a community centre, and has rejected Ministry approaches to build a high school there. The Ministry will presumably buy some other land nearby. I’m not sure there’s going to be much land left to masterplan, especially when the new Howard’s Drive roundabout goes in too, or whether landowners can actually be forced to follow its conditions. That said, it feels a little harsh to give this council grief over its housing policies, as major progress has been made since Jim Boult took the mayoral chains. At first glance, it wouldn’t appear so, would it. The median price for a house in Queenstown Lakes last month was $1.4m. That’s $284k for the 20% deposit and $2,800 in mortgage each fortnight, or a whopping $73k a year. The median house price is 12 times the annual median household income. Back in the 80s and 90s, it was three to four times. But those are national problems, in fact, international problems. At a local level, since the Mayoral Housing Affordability Taskforce was created in 2017 hundreds of families have been able to buy sections and build in SHAs, and the supercharged relationship with the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust has seen scores more into affordable housing, through its innovative programmes and inclusionary zoning. QLCHT has years of projects planned out. Hundreds more families have been able to buy and build in Hanley’s Farm, the final stages of Shotover Country, and other subdivisions, although in some cases developers had to push their projects through the Environment Court. As for the masterplan, at least it might act as a guide for developers, but whether it will ever have any teeth, including its eleventh-hour transport conditions, remains to be seen. Fast-track housing for Ladies Mile by Paul Taylor
A developer behind plans for new housing on Ladies Mile says it will be compatible with the council’s vision for the area. Glenpanel Development Ltd wants to build up to 700 homes at the north-western end of Te Putahi, Frankton-Ladies Mile, towards the Shotover Bridge, in two developments, Flint’s Park and Flint’s Park West. Both have now been approved for the fast-track consent process, through the COVID-19 Recovery Fast-track Consenting Act 2020. It means the applications for the medium-density developments, which will be lodged in the coming months, will be considered by an expert panel rather than Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC). Last October, Queenstown councillors approved a masterplan for Ladies Mile, in a bid to control what can be built on the privately-owned green fields between Shotover Bridge and Lake Hayes. The $1.4 million masterplan, which envisages up to 2,400 apartments and houses, along with schools, shops, offices and community facilities, faced considerable public opposition due to the proposed density and traffic concerns. But even those councillors who initially opposed the masterplan eventually agreed it was better than letting the landowners choose to develop the land in any way they wanted. Now Glenpanel Development Ltd can do just that, although QLDC will have the opportunity to provide advice to the expert panel. Director Mark Tylden, however, says the Flint’s Park And Flint’s Park West have been designed to be compatible with the council’s adopted masterplan. “Once consented, the projects will give effect to the council’s vision for the north-western end of Ladies Mile, by providing medium density residential development, with a diverse range of housing typologies, links to the active travel network and public transport infrastructure.
“There is a local centre precinct, including community activities, centred around the historic Glenpanel Homestead and grounds. Subject to ongoing negotiations, there is provision for primary school education as well as a local park(s) on the sites.” On traffic concerns, Tylden points to the $115m Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) is spending to improve Queenstown’s transport network, in particular bus lanes and new roundabouts, and Otago Regional Council’s business case for improving bus services. He says there’s a recognition people will need to transition to using public transport, cycling and walking, in general. Flint’s Park, at 429 Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway, includes up to 384 homes on 15.6ha of land beneath Slope Hill. It could feature a primary school, which would reduce the number of homes to 179, an early childhood centre, a mixed-use centre including a café, shops and offices, and public open space. The Glenpanel Homestead, a heritage building, will remain, with additions for commercial use. Flint’s Park West is on an 18.4ha site, although only 8.6ha would be developed, featuring up to 315 homes, or 180 if the primary school goes there instead. There could also be a church and public open space. Tylden says the developments will address Queenstown’s lack of housing supply and diversity, which “have been driving inequality”. “[The developments will] bring hope to many in Queenstown who love living here but cannot get ahead due to lack of availability and prohibitive housing costs.” He says both he and fellow director Lindsey Topp are “thrilled” by the support of the Ministry for the Environment, Ministry of Transport and other local and central government agencies with fast tracking the projects. “Despite negative publicity, government agencies and ministers are pushing hard for affordable housing, and their support has dramatically sped up these developments.”

Family and friends mourn Budd by Paul Taylor
Queenstown bid an emotional farewell to much-loved tourism leader Graham Budd on Sunday. About 300 mourners gathered at Lake Hayes Pavilion to pay their respects to Graham, who died from a suspected heart attack while walking in Arrowtown on Good Friday. The former Destination Queenstown boss, a father of four, was aged just 62. Son Jono Budd said Graham was his dad “but also my best mate” and someone to turn to when things got tough. “You were always there to provide support and advice when I felt lost, like I do now.” He said last time they’d shared a beer together, he’d left thinking about how much he was looking forward to a long friendship with his dad as adults. “You were always strong for us children, no matter what you were dealing with yourself. . . I’m really going to miss you.” Graham’s other children Justine, Sasha and Georgia, along with his brother Stephen, sister Jenny and brother-in-law and friend Theo Naus, also paid tribute at the memorial, which was streamed online.
Boult described Graham’s passion for Queenstown Lakes, his great abilities as a leader and advocacy for the tourism sector, saying he “never missed an opportunity to promote Queenstown and its wonderful attributes” often through the use of charts. “Graham was big on charts. Everything was best explained by charts, and if possible a PowerPoint presentation to back it up!” Boult said he’d tried to sum up Graham in a few words, but couldn’t. “He was more than a few words.” Instead, he quoted at length from his former colleague at DQ, Sarah O’Donnell, who had captured him “perfectly”. She described him as an articulate, understated and powerful leader, who always had the best interests of his team at heart, and was “patient, respectful, loyal and dedicated”. Above all, she described him as a “very kind soul, who cared deeply for the people around him”.
They described a life full of adventure and joy, an incredibly proud father who loved soccer, travel and DIY, so much so he managed to wrangle a trade card from Mitre10. Brother Stephen said he’d been fortunate enough to spend “the most wonderful night” with Graham, the night before he died, talking about his trip to Houston for NASA’s 50th anniversary of the moon landing, and his 60th birthday trip to Switzerland. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult led the tributes from the civic sector, along with another former DQ boss David Kennedy, and Great South chief executive Ian Collier. But, such was his connection to people he knew and worked with, their tributes were really from friends, followed by a tribute from his good friend, journalist Philip ‘Scoop’ Chandler, who spent many an evening in local bar Brazz with Graham.

NASA balloons return to Wanaka for super pressure balloon test launch
A NASA super pressure balloon launched in March 2015 from Wanaka Airport, New Zealand, on a journey that will significantly expand the envelope for conducting nearspace scientific investigations. Credits: NASA's Wallops Flight Facility
NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program is back in Wanaka, for another flight test of its super pressure balloon, The team is targeting early May for the balloon launch which will be the fourth test launch from Wanaka Airport since NASA began balloon flight operations there in 2015. NASA last launched from Wanaka in 2017 and the team had travelled from the US back in 2020 to begin preparations for a Super Pressure Balloon flight but ultimately it had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The test will test technology that supports enabling science missions for longer flight durations, with flights running up to 100 days. “We are on the cusp of perfecting our SPB balloon technology, which is poised to expand opportunities for all sorts of science and technology missions by providing relatively low-cost, near-space access for longduration flight times at mid-latitudes,” said Debbie Fairbrother, chief of NASA’s Balloon Program Office. “For certain types of science, we can achieve the same results on a balloon that could only otherwise be achieved by flying into space on a rocket. Certifying the balloon as a long-duration flight vehicle is key to supporting bigger and more complex science missions in the future.”

Come talk to the team at Collective Consulting. The local experts in their field. Honest professionals that will get your Immigration matter sorted.
The team has plans for further launches in 2023 with two further super pressure balloon flights. The super pressure balloon is an 532,000-cubicmeter pressurized flight module designed to float at a constant density altitude despite the heating and cooling of the day-night cycle. This pressurization, coupled with the stratospheric conditions in the southern hemisphere, enables long-duration flights. The balloon is helium-filled and about the size of the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, when fully inflated at its operational float altitude of 110,000 feet (33.5 kilometers). Wanaka is NASA’s dedicated launch site for mid-latitude, long-duration balloon missions and conducts the launches from Wanaka in collaboration with Queenstown Airport Corporation, QLDC and Airways New Zealand.

NASA Eyes Ice Giant One of NASA’s next major missions may focus on sending a dedicated craft to study Uranus, a $4B endeavour that would provide the first up-close view of a so-called “ice giant.” The news followed the release of a highly influential, once-in-a-decade report by a scientific panel generally viewed as a prioritisation list for the agency. The mission would launch early next decade and take roughly 13 years to reach its target. The seventh planet from the sun, Uranus has only been studied once— Voyager 2 made a brief flyby in 1986. A dedicated orbital probe would provide scientists insight into the Uranian atmosphere, while filling in gaps in the understanding of how medium-size planets form. Space.com
Florida lawmakers eliminate Disney’s self-governing status Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday signed into law a bill revoking the special status of Walt Disney World’s special status that allows it to selfgovern inside the park’s borders. The House voted to eliminate the special status of Reedy Creek, which was created in 1967 to allow Disney to carry out municipal functions of its own. Disney, facing pressure from employees and fans, last month came out in opposition to DeSantis’s law, which bans classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for students in kindergarten through third grade. DeSantis in response suggested that he would support stripping Disney of the special status that allows it to operate as an independent government in the area surrounding its theme park. The vote is a victory for Republican governor Ron DeSantis, who for weeks has been battling Disney over the state’s controversial Parental Rights in Education Law — dubbed by critics the “Don’t Say Gay” law. The first open-air test of releasing genetically modified mosquitoes to fight diseases shows positive results. The study releases male mosquitoes with genes that kill female offspring. The results, while positive, still requires larger tests to determine whether the insects can achieve the ultimate goal of suppressing a wild population of potentially virus-carrying mosquitoes. Oxitec, which developed the insects, released nearly five million engineered Aedes aegypti mosquitoes over the course of seven months in Florida Keys, and has now almost completed monitoring the release sites. Wild A. aegypti mosquitoes can carry viruses such as chikungunya, dengue, Zika and yellow fever, so scientists have sought ways to reduce their populations. Oxitec’s engineered males carry a gene that is lethal to female offspring. If all goes to plan, when released into the environment, the engineered males should mate with wild females, and their female offspring will die before they can reproduce. Male offspring will carry the gene and pass it on to half of their progeny. As each generation mates, more females die, and the A. aegypti population should dwindle. Nature.com

Infowars and two other companies owned by US radio host Alex Jones, Infowars Health and Prison Planet TV, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in southern Texas Sunday after he was found liable in several defamation lawsuits. Jones was sued in 2018 by some of the victims’ families from the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting after he falsely claimed the massacre was a hoax. The filing will allow the businesses to continue operating while also pausing the pending civil litigation as the companies prepare turnaround plans. The move comes after a settlement offer by Jones of $120K per family was rejected. A trial is set to begin in Connecticut in August to determine damages, while a related trial in Texas is set to begin later this month. Infowars reportedly cited assets less than $50K in the filing and estimated liabilities from $1M to $10M. Separately, Jones is accused of hiding millions of dollars in assets in a new lawsuit filed by Sandy Hook families. USA Today

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Dear Mr Brightside, I’ve just had the most unrelaxing break. We’ve had visits from my family, and they’ve been taxing. Every morning around the breakfast table they ask cheerily ‘So, what’s the plan for today?’ This line instantly hits a nerve. I didn’t sign up for sorting out their itinerary for their holiday! I get cranky and the atmosphere gets awkward. I don’t hate my family, but I just can’t be under the same roof as them for prolonged periods. Am I a bad person?
They say, family is like fish, eh... only good for a few days. In this case, I’d say this saying fits the bill. You’ve flew the coop, standing on your own two feet, found your own daily groove but now the parents come to town wanting a tour guide and it throws a stick on the floor of your internal roller dome. I’m with you, it’s draining to have dependent people that are weighing on your ability to make decisions. Most people are very indecisive and to think about somebody else’s routine sends anyone off kilter. There’s added pressure to entertain, to cram in quality bonding, to get updated with family affairs and hear gossip about their friend’s friend’s daughter which you’ve only meet once. Nod and smile. I care a lot. I sound nasty but there’s a clear age gap and interests do differ. I’ve developed an ingenious strategy to deal with the line ‘What’s the plan for today’. I penned a list of jobs that needs to be done around the house. • Stacking the firewood • Chopping down that dead tree on the roadside • Re-staining the deck • De-weed the driveway. If the culprit should say those words I rebut with ‘Yip, your plan involves ____’ and I’ll give them a chore to do off the list. More often than not, they’ll be happy enough do it. While it may sound awful to suggest parental slave labour on the menu, I assure you it’s a win, win for everyone. It keeps the peace by keeping them busy. The conversation changes from a head banging subject like their technology difficulties to a topic you can all get onboard with - present upkeep of property. Keep them busy. That is the key. This requires little planning, no bookings and general vibe around the household is elevated after a good ole working bee. Send Mum on the bike mission to the grocery store to pick up that really crucial item from the international isle for a recipe. Crack your old man a cold Speights after he’s finished your handyman tasks. Slap him on the back and say, ‘you deserve this’, he’ll feel important, like he’s achieved. By orchestrating diversions so you can create breathing room. It peeves me off to see two wide eyed owls perk up whenever I enter the kitchen in the morning especially when I’m not dressed for company. So, I got them a puzzle so they could keep themselves occupied and I could sneak in and out in my holey sleepwear. You don’t hate your parents, but you’ve become too acquainted with your own space (haven’t we all). Anybody who invades it becomes a potential target of your wrath. Know your mental limit of family time. Their trip will be ruined if you lose the plot by the end of it. Nobody wants to leave with a foul taste in the month. But if the fish starts to stink by day four, it’s time to send it on its way or at least a day trip somewhere down stream.

Just another quiet, dull week in the Wakatipu as I learn to be marvellous. The fabulous Leigh Jeffery came and gave a group of us a lesson in how to make the most of our iPhone cameras - even I was able to capture a tiny bit of the magic, that we have so much of, in our beautiful bit of the world. You can contact her on Leighjeffrey@me.com for info on her classes .The next day was a talk at Bunnies - the consignment fashion shop in Arrowtown’s Ramshaw Lane where canny locals sell their designer clothes that don’t suit them and buy other canny locals’ even better ones (and brand new ones too). The talk by Lou Heller was how to look at your wardrobe with new eyes. My wardrobe is full of total disasters, and I always end up just wearing jeans or yoga pants and scruffy old jerseys. The new me is going to be taking wonderful photos and looking chic. Don’t hold your breath, though… these things take time. Debbie Muir turned 60 this week and her husband Greg organised a stunning party for Debbie’s extremely large circle of friends. I hunted and hunted but couldn’t find one shy or boring person there. I did wish I’d listened harder to the fashion guru’s talk on how to be chic however, as there were so many beautiful outfits and I felt quite the country mouse next to all of them. You would think that the council would be interested in saving money and heritage buildings, but it’s just been noted by the eagle-eyed Diane Hart and Julian Knights that they hadn’t even considered preserving the old high school buildings. They can’t just get rid of them and think no one will mind. For the last twenty years we’ve had a space for art classes, workshops, exhibitions etc. and these facilities are essential. The heritage architects confirm the buildings can be moved and the fabulous Buzz Stop have agreed to add them to their eclectic mix of heritage huts and sheds. Be ready to make your submissions right now to ensure the building stays in this district. Let QLDC know that you want it staying in the Wakatipu and not demolished or sold. I wish I could find more good news stories about council, but it’s not easy….always keen to hear if there are some!! And it sounds as if the government is trying to barge through a massive building programme on Ladies Mile, not QLDC. Has anyone from the government had a go at driving into Queenstown that way lately? Even without 700 new houses, it’s a nightmare for locals trying to get to work or the airport or wherever. Did they discuss any of it with the community? For some very good news, I heard from Bridgie Mee that her daughter Eve was not just arriving back from London after three years away, but she’s also staying AND will be working as a nurse at the Lakes District Hospital. We need all the nurses we can get, and the nursing staff are absolute stars, but it must be very difficult for them when it always seems the hospital is so understaffed. Welcome home, dear Eve and hope lots of your fellow Kiwi NZ nurses follow your example.

NEWS IN BRIEF
UB40 to play Queenstown British reggae legends UB40 will return to Queenstown early next year. They’ll be joined by Jefferson Starship and Kiwi band Dragon for an NZ tour, which also includes shows in Napier, New Plymouth, Matakana, Tauranga and Nelson. The venue for the Queenstown concert on 7 January is yet to be confirmed but tickets are on sale. The band suffered the devastating loss of founder member, lyricist and lead sax player Brian Travers in 2021, after a long battle with cancer.
Young tramper named Police have released the name of a tramper who was found dead near Milford Sound. Hamish Steven Attenborough, 21, was reported missing on Monday, 28 March, when he didn’t return from a hike to Devil’s Armchair, in Fiordland National Park. His body was found in the river canyon at Giant Gate Falls after a two-day search. Attenborough, who worked for Queenstown company Ultimate Hikes, was an experienced tramper and was carrying safety equipment and a locator beacon.

Heavy rain caused a culvert to wash out at at Boundary Creek, spreading debris across the Glenorchy-Queenstown road, cutting off the township. It was fully reopened by 5pm the next day.

New Matariki Arrowtown Lights festival by Paul Taylor
The stars have aligned for new celebration in Arrowtown to mark New Zealand’s first Matariki public holiday. Matariki Arrowtown Lights will be a three-day cultural event in the heart of Arrowtown (known by tāngata whenua as Kā Muriwai) from 24-26 June 2022. Working closely with local iwi, the event will weave together visual storytelling with stunning light displays and projections from the creative South Island Light Orchestra (SIL0). Kapa haka performances by local schools will be followed by an interactive evening about the significance of the Matariki stars. And Arrowtown-based Prof Brian Boyle, one of the world’s pre-eminent astrophysicists, will be on hand to share the wonders of the Otago night skies including the Mataraki cluster. The new event builds on celebrations held for several years by the Arrowtown Preschool. Its annual Matariki fundraiser proved so popular it quickly outgrew its venue, opening up to the public five years ago. “Our local community has embraced Matariki and supports the new public holiday,” Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Manager Nicky Busst. “We saw this as an opportunity to bring together the area’s wider creative talents and explore the cultural significance of Matariki as a unique New Zealand holiday, in a way that not only brings our community together but attracts visitors to the region too.” The timing of the event - at the start of the winter season and as COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease - is perfect, says Busst. “Matariki is a time for reflection and welcoming the promise of a new year. After the tough few years we’ve all had, we are ready to celebrate life, our Aotearoa heritage and to be reminded how lucky we are to be where we are, with our clear night skies and stunning environment.” The Government announced a new Matariki public holiday earlier this year, the first to recognise Te Ao Māori. Matariki is an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea’ (‘The Eyes of the God Tāwhirimātea’) and refers to a large cluster of stars, also known as

the Pleiades. The rising of Matariki in the mid-winter sky marks the changing of the seasons and the beginning of the Māori New Year. Traditionally, for Māori tūpuna (ancestors), when Matariki appeared in June/ July, clear and bright stars promised a warm and abundant winter, while hazy stars warned of a bleak winter. Matariki is a time to honour those who’ve passed since the last rising of Matariki, to celebrate the present and give thanks for what we have, and to look forward to the future. The Arrowtown event, organised by the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association and Arrowtown Charitable Trust has been supported and funded by the Central Lakes Trust, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Community Trust South, Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group (Connecting Communities Fund) and the Regional Events Fund.

GEOFF HUNT
THE FRONTMAN OF MULTISPORT At 68, Geoff Hunt, one of New Zealand’s best known endurance athletes and adventure race organisers, is still a sucker for punishment. Parked up in his truck camper in a Nevada trailer park, fresh from four months skiing every day at Steamboat Springs in Colorado, Geoff and wife, Brandi Beauvais, are on their way to California to compete in Levi Leipheimer’s GranFondo bike race.
Geoff relaxing after three days of harrowing rapids as part of a team on the first descent of the Landsborough River, around the mid-1970s
He’s also always been good at convincing. After his second year at Otago University studying geography and geology Geoff wangled his way onto a discounted university trip to the United States. “The medical students were going and you got a work permit and $430 flight, so I asked if I could join,” he says. “I ended up staying nine months and working in a ski rental shop at Squaw Valley, California.” That’s where he met another roaming Kiwi snow bunny, Tim McGeorge, who later became a renowned Queenstown parapente pilot. It was back to the freezing works to earn some money once Geoff’s permit expired and straight to Queenstown to live the lifestyle in 1978. Geoff and wife Brandi on yet another epic bike ride
“You can pick your poison,” says Geoff. “Brandi’s doing the 81 mile (130kms), 6000 vertical feet (1828m) event while I’m doing 121 miles (194kms) and 10,000 vertical feet (3048m).” It’s just what you do after a 40-year career of endurance racing, right? Geoff, renowned for founding and directing one of New Zealand’s leading endurance races, the Southern Traverse, grew up in Dunedin, the son of a farmer and meat processor. Dad’s job was a handy opening to well-paid holiday work that helped Geoff fund his love of skiing. “I bought my first pair of ski boots from those earnings for 40 pounds.” When he was 13 the family moved to a farm near Mosgiel. His parents took their three kids skiing once, sparking a passion, and eventually they bought a holiday house at Frankton. However, it was after school while at Otago Boys High School that a fiercely competitive Geoff discovered and fell in love with the challenge of multisport.
Before long he’d scored a job at Kontiki Rafting, guiding and driving for owners Mike Miles and Jim Archibald. “I’d spend the summer at the top of the Mall selling Kontiki babes and grannies raft trips.” Eventually he ended up guiding at Dane’s Rafting for Dale Gardiner where Geoff was introduced to American adventurer Larry Jacobson who was helping Dale set up. Larry had been invited to train guides, help build equipment and make the first descents down the Lower Shotover, Kawarau and the West Coast’s notorious Landsborough River. “He invited me on my first trip down the Kawarau River through the notorious Smith’s Falls,” says Geoff. “Once you started rafting that’s just what you did.” Geoff later worked alongside guides like John McCormack and Carl Selby. “Carl and I also drove scenic tours for Dale into the Upper Shotover beyond Skippers.” Those were the days when fit young male rafting guides pulled up in passenger vans outside the then Mount Cook Company terminal at the bottom of Queenstown Mall. “They wore short shorts, with their arms flexing, and rolled up to pick up their next batch of tourists to take into the Shotover,” says Geoff. He guided all over the South Island for Value Tours. By the early 1980s Queenstown had caught the attention of French outdoor adventurers. The Raid Gauloises – The Grand Traverse was born. It was the first adventure race in the world. Geoff was appointed their water safety officer. “We had to call it Raid Gauloises – The Grand Traverse as things were a bit sensitive at the time. The French had just bombed the Rainbow Warrior and it was thought the word, ‘Raid’, was in appropriate.” No health and safety requirements back then. “One night us rafting guides were very drunk after a session at Eichardt’s and we all ran the rapids on the Kawarau River under a full moon. It was a bit sketchy, but we all survived.” He recalls running a trainee camp for potential guides once on the Kawarau River. “We got to the top of the treacherous Dogleg rapids and I called to them all to ‘jump overboard’ and just because I said it they did it. I would never do that,” he grins. He’s had a front paddler yelling, ‘Paddle! Paddle!’ frantically through tortuous rapids on the Landsborough. “He had no idea he was the only one left on the boat.”
American river guide Jim Doolittle going over technique with Geoff (right) around the late 70s
However, Geoff – one of New Zealand’s most experienced river guides in his heyday, never had any mishaps or loss of life.

Two years after The Raid Geoff launched The Southern Traverse, an event he owned and directed from 1985 until 2017. Each year he designed an even more gruelling course, taking in remote peaks and passes stretching from Haast to Lake Ohau and down to Fiordland. At its peak the race attracted 60 teams from all over the world. Geoff secured sponsorship with Discovery Channel to stage the event, finding himself being regularly jetted to Washingon D.C. “The guy would say, ‘Pop up for a chat. Come the day after tomorrow’, and the tickets would be in the mail.” The first meeting Geoff turned up in Washington in a suit and tie. “There were eight of them there to meet me and they were all in shorts and T-shirts,” he grins.

Before long he was organising a World Championship for adventure racing with backing from Discovery Channel. Winning teams were lured in by a $5000 offer to compete and it was a huge success, starting out in Switzerland. “One month before Christmas I had eight teams guaranteed and that shot to 60 in no time,” he says. “We were flying home from that first event in September 2001 and were airborne on our way to Singapore when the September 11 attacks occurred.” Throughout the years he’s organised many a ski race, bike festival and multisport event, as well as competing himself successfully all over the world. It was touch and go when he and multisport legend Steve Gurney contracted leptospirosis competing in Brazil once, landing them both in hospital back home – a second bout for Gurney. Once competing in Utah Geoff ran out of water. “We shone our torches down a well and it had dead rats floating in it. We had to drink it using purification tablets. We then came across someone’s camp and stole some of their water. It was a case of survival.” Also an experienced heli ski guide, Geoff worked alongside Wanaka’s Paul Scaife on the Powder 8s. For 35 years winters were spent “being paid for my hobby” – working as a heli ski guide for Harris Mountains Heli Skiing with Paul. “I started out flying with Don Spary (Alpine Helicopters) off Coronet Peak in 1979.” Geoff’s completed the Coast to Coast eight times, placed third in the Raid Gauloises in South Africa, fourth in the Eco Challenge in Utah and in the past year competed in Aspen’s Power of 4 event and nine uphill and downhill ski racing events.
Meet the team
He’s a current NZ Masters ski racing champion and despite his age this grandfather of five has no plans to retire. “Staying fit is the key to staying fit. You can’t stop.”

Arts+Culture Funky folk trio to play in Arrowtown by Bethany Rogers
Not-quite-folk trio Albi and the Wolves are heading to Arrowtown. Touring with Arts on Tour, the band will play at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on 21st May.
“I’m heavily influenced by the people around me. I write lots of songs about love and loss and missing home. We have protest songs too, of course – you can’t be a folk band without some protest songs. “Since the pandemic, we’ve been working on album number three and hope is a theme that will be heavily present. It’s about resilience and pushing through.” Chris says they’ll perform a mix of music from their previous two albums in Arrowtown as well as some new pieces (“you guys will be guinea pigs!”). “We really like to take people on a journey and build a sense of community. You’ll hear stories from us. I talk a lot and Pascal talks even more than me so we jostle for yarns. So that’s part of the show, but we also like to get you moving. “Over the course of the show, you’ll get to know us and we’ll get to know you.” With restrictions on live music performances over the past couple of years, Chris says they’re looking forward to being back on tour. Organised by the Arts on Tour trust, they’ll play almost every day in May in small community venues across the country.
Described as folk music that’s “been tinkered with under the hood”, the trio’s bright, energetic and relatable songs helped them win the Best Folk Artist Award at the NZVMAs (Aotearoa Music Awards) in 2018. Albie and the Wolves comprises violinist Pascal Roggen, bassist Michael Young and frontman Chris “Albie” Dent (so-called as Chris has albinism). “Folk is the music I grew up on,” says Chris. “My Mum and Dad would take me to Auckland Folk Festival when I was a wee kid. There are these amazing folk clubs that sit on the side of a mountain at Devonport in New Zealand and some of the very first songs I wrote, I played to a gloriously supportive crowd there. Folk has been part of the fabric of my upbringing. “Michael has been playing music his whole life and he took a shine to folk about seventeen years ago. And Pascal, our violinist, well, he’s amazing. He can play anything.” Pascal plays on an electric five-stringed violin while Michael plays on electric double bass. You’ll find Chris, who’s also the songwriter, playing guitar and singing.
Art News Help Ukraine - Aid through Art Exhibition. Call for artists Aid Through Art is a pop-up exhibition to raise funds for those affected by the war in Ukraine. The organisers are currently looking for artists that would like to participate and help the initiative. Aid Through Art is supported by Wanaka Arts, the Wanaka Community Hub, and local businesses. The exhibition will be held at the Wanaka Community Hub and online in May, with ticketing and commissions donated going directly towards helping the Ukrainian humanitarian aid efforts Opening night is scheduled for 6th of May. For More information head to https://aidthroughartnz.wixsite.com/ aid-through-art
“Art on Tour is an incredible trust and they aim to get music into rural parts of New Zealand,” says Chris, “Arrowtown isn’t super rural, I mean, some of the other places I’ve never been to before. We’ll play in little halls and prominent venues.” He adds that, with the support of Arts on Tour, the band are excited to get back on the road and bring music to the region. “We’d only done like six gigs this summer, which is crazy because we usually play all the time. The feeling of euphoria to play again… I forgot how important that was to me. “[…] there’s pretty much twenty-two tour dates and there is a little foreboding after having not been very active for a while but that’s coupled with this extraordinary level of excitement. I cannot wait and the boys feel that too. I think we’ll really enjoy this after a turbulent couple of years where masterplans went down the gurgler.” Find out more on the Arts on Tour website (aotnz.co.nz). With Hamish Coney and Kelly Carmichael Collecting art gets under your skin and supporting artists by buying their work is a great way to nurture the wider art scene. However, if you’re interested in building a collection and spending money on it, it’s a good idea to educate yourself. Arrowtown Creative Arts Society is presenting an Art Collecting 101 evening and has invited art consultant Hamish Coney and Starkwhite’s Kelly Carmichael to offer advice on how to go about buying art and what to look out for. Some of the topics will include: How to start an art collection, collecting for your home, collecting for corporate spaces, what to look for in an art work, the difference between art and design, primary vs secondary market, how to talk about your art works, where to look for and learn about art, and where to turn to with your questions about art. When: Saturday 7 May, 5–7pm Where: Arrowtown Bowling Club cnr Denbeigh & Hertford Streets. Tickets: $40. More information and tickets go to eventfinda or email: info@acas.nz
THE TIGHT FIVE: NEIL FRAZER In the lead up to First Thursdays Queenstown’s return we’re asking artists five questions about their practice. First up is painter Neil Frazer whose gestural and heavily worked surfaces are thick with paint applied using rags, brushes, and the artist’s own hands.

Thinking though your art practice, when did it all click? It hasn’t yet, I don’t think it ever will. I wish it would, but for me what’s key is the search and trying to find ways of making improved paintings. To avoid complacency you continue to try new things and satisfaction is probably a barrier to that. It keeps it exciting that way, more of an adventure with paint. Early in your career you made abstract works, how does that influence you now? Abstract painting brings with it a whole bunch of different concerns. It allowed me to concentrate on texture, movement, and colour so I could talk about aspects of nature without being too literal. Now I combine the raw power of expressive painting with new information, an energy and emotional response to the landscape. Painting is very physical and goes hand in hand with my experiences of being out in nature. An abstract painter can take liberties, create illusions, and leave things out or add them in. I see myself as a figurative painter using abstract language to best respond to the natural world. You show your work here and abroad – do you approach paintings depicting New Zealand landscape differently? Why would you paint the landscape when you can just stand outside? It’s a different feeling in NZ, there is a different energy to the weather. Every landscape has a texture, smell… all of which are constantly changing sometimes with great force. New Zealand has a unique landscape and demands a different set of responses and values in its depiction.
Your new exhibition Skyline depicts dramatic alpine landscape, will a local audience recognise some of the peaks? The peaks are all real but painting allows me to change the focus away from a traditional depiction towards more of an intuitive response to such a magnificent and powerful landscape. What’s your biggest barrier to being an artist? Well, some would say the income which is very unpredictable. But for me reaching the point where I can walk away from a completed painting is a huge challenge. The best part of being an artist is being in the studio and making the paintings. I end up destroying (with a knife) huge numbers of paintings along the way! See Neil Frazer’s exhibition Skyline at Milford Galleries Queenstown, 9a Earl Street, from 29 April – 30 May.

What is Anxiety and how to stop it Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
The secret that high performing athletes know. I work with clients who have anxiety even more now than ever and so does our team around the globe, COVID has created another pandemic, one of anxiety. Anxiety is an emotion of the future, we go out into our future and imagine it going wrong, then we feel anxious. I call them future memories and have just registered the term as it explains easily what is happening inside our heads.
Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural Coding® Company. She has 30 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.
We create future memories® all the time, without realising it. The truth here is that we are constantly creating an idea of our future, we just don’t know that because it is out of conscious awareness. Think about this for a moment, think of an event that is happening soon, maybe something that you’re really looking forward to. The chances are without you realising it you would’ve already created a movie, most probably with a soundtrack of that event, you’ve gone out into your future and you have created a representation of what the event will be for you. The reason that I suggested you think about an event looking forward to is because, in order to get excited about that event you have to have created a movie with a soundtrack, most probably it will have had some self talk in there, maybe you could taste or smell something too. If I’d asked you to think about an event in the future that worries you, something that you’re fearful of, then exactly the same thing happens in the neurology. You would create a movie with the components we listed above, such as a visual with an external soundtrack and internal dialogue and maybe you could even smell or taste something.
When I work with a client who runs anxiety as a daily program just the realisation that this is something that they’re creating within their own neurology, is a huge sigh of relief for them. What this now means is that they can do something different and this will give them a different outcome. When I’m running my live courses or speaking at a keynote, I generally reference a gentleman called Lewis Pugh. Lewis is quite an incredible guy; he decided that he would swim 1 km at the actual north pole, in order to build awareness around the fact that the ice caps are melting. To put this into perspective the people that fell off the titanic landed into water at 5°C, water freezes at 0°C and the water at the North Pole is -1.7°. It’s really cold. Lewis was unable to train his body in this temperature of water because nowhere is colder than the North Pole and so in his TEDTalk, he talks about how he trained his mind in order to train his body to survive this 1 km swim. His coach and medical team felt that this was a huge risk, as he was unable to physically train his body for this temperature of water and he risked having a cardiac arrest because the water was so cold.
When this movie runs with all these components it causes anxiety in the system, if the movie is an event we are looking forward to then this creates excitement in the system.
What Lewis did was create a movie and he ran this movie in the comfort of his apartment in London, sitting on his sofa hundreds of times in his mind.
People who experience anxiety a lot in their lives are very good at doing this, it’s an unconscious program that runs out of conscious awareness and therefore the person is unaware of what is actually happening.
He used what we call active imagination to create this movie. Not passive imagination, Passive imagination is using only one sense, sight, whereas active imagination incorporates all the senses. What Lewis used was all his senses, when interviewed by CNN as to what he did inside his mind to prepare for his swim this is what he said; “I could taste the salt water, I could hear Tim calling from the boat, go on Lewis go on, I could smell the diesel and feel the water burning my skin. I have swum the North Pole hundreds of times in my mind.” Here are the senses he used in his future memory®: Smell Taste Hearing Feeling This is active imagination and this is what people use to create anxiety, so focus on what you do want rather than what you don’t want, create a future memory® that is pleasurable and you will feel the pleasure. Create a future memory® of what you don’t want and you will get anxiety. Be aware, watch yourself, catch yourself and choose to create a future memory that serves you, it is all in your mind, it is all in your control. Knowing that is so freeing.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
NZSIR sets up community fund Two key community organisations will now receive ongoing philanthropic support from a luxury Queenstown real estate agency. New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty (NZSIR) has pledged to support the Wakatipu Community Foundation (WCF) and the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) via the new NZSIR Community Fund. The agency has kicked off the fund with a $30,000 base contribution and has invited all Southern Lakes-based NZSIR licensees to also contribute to the corporate fund on a per-property-sale basis. NZSIR Managing Director Mark Harris says the two grassroots community organisations were the ideal recipients of the initiative. “Social responsibility is very important to us as a company and we are thrilled to be giving something back to the Queenstown community,” he says.
Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust Executive Officer Julie Scott says: “This is a unique and innovative concept from NZSIR that we welcome wholeheartedly. “With nearly 800 households on our waiting list, demand for affordable and secure housing is ever increasing. We are sincerely grateful to NZSIR for these funds which will assist us in housing more families throughout the entire Queenstown Lakes District.” Thirty-five per cent will go towards a NZSIR Endowment Fund for perpetuity, to grow and return income to the WCF on an ongoing basis, while another 35 per cent goes to a NZSIR Impact Fund to be distributed to the community annually. NZSIR will nominate which local causes the Impact Fund is directed to. NZSIR is also investigating setting up funds in other NZ locations.
“We have long talked about pledging our commitment to a certain charity or organisation that has a truly positive impact on local people and the Wakatipu Community Foundation and Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust do incredible work in our region. We are very proud to be supporters of that work.” WCF is a registered not-for-profit charity that facilitates endowment funds for individuals and families and provides grants to local organisations for the benefit of the wider community through arts and culture, housing, sports, youth, education and the environment. WCF Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Belmont says: “The Wakatipu Community Foundation is excited to partner with NZSIR and their team of locals to provide vital funding for our community groups in the Queenstown Lakes District. “Not only will the NZSIR Community Fund make an impact today, it will lead us well into the future. We also admire their leadership in showing how successful businesses can work with – and help – their community.” Harris has invited the NZSIR team of local licensees to become contributors to the fund. The company will then match every individual agent contribution dollar for dollar. Thirty per cent of the fund will go to the QLCHT to help fund community housing projects in the Queenstown Lakes District.

COMMUNITY NOTES Two much loved Film Festivals are coming to town. Both the Banff Centre Mountain Film Tour and Book Festival and the Big Bike Film Night are local favorites and showing in the next couple of weeks.
Banff Centre Mountain Film Tour
Big Bike Film Night’s
The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is first off the mark and is one of the largest mountain film festivals in the world!
The Big Bike Film Night’s is an uplifting and inspiring film collection and a celebration of the ordinary bike, with ordinary people and extraordinary stories. The short films are a great reminder of why we love to ride our bike; with stories that captivate, make us think, and most importantly of all- stories that inspire us to get out and ride This year’s treasure chest of films includes two films that have connections with Queenstown.
The festival, actually a world tour, celebrates the amazing achievements in outdoor storytelling and filmmaking worldwide! Approximately 360 films are entered into the annual festival, from which the world’s best mountain films are chosen to travel the globe. Traveling to remote vistas, analyzing topical environmental issues, and bringing audiences up-close and personal with adrenaline-packed action sports, the World Tour is an exhilarating and provocative exploration of the mountain world. The Queenstown stop is ever popular and makes for a great night and once again is presented by the New Zealand Alpine Club. It’s 100% organised by local volunteers and is a huge fundraiser for the local Alpine Club. It’s a really cool way to sit back, be inspired for two evenings and raise funds for a great cause. When: Wednesday/Thursday 4th and 5th May from 7pm. Where: Queenstown Memorial Centre Tickets at Eventfinda

Future Ground: a progression camp for female mountain bike riders in Queenstown, saw ten riders over four days push the limits of their ability. Under the watchful and experienced eye of some world-class mentors and coaches, they built on their already strong skills to progress through new boundaries. The question was asked, if being with like-minded female athletes, in an environment geared up for learning, would progression occur? And the resounding answer was yes. This is the rider’s story from the Mons Royale Future Ground Queenstown Progression camp. The Freedom Seat: adventurer, cyclist, and humanitarian Naresh Kumar was based in Queenstown for 5 years. In 2019 Naresh Kumar went on his biggest adventure- cycling from Chennai, India to Hamburg, Germany on a tandem bike. Along the way he invited strangers and friends to take up the rear seat and help him pedal for a cause. Where: Arrowtown Hall on Tuesday 10th May, in Wanaka at the Community Hub on Wednesday 11th & Thursday 12th May. Tickets available at www.bigbikefilmnight.nz or at the venue.
What’s On
Queenstown’s total property value soars
School of Rock The Musical
Queenstown Lakes now has more than $57 billion worth of property. The long-awaited new rating valuations show the total value of property in the district has risen by 50% in the past four years. The valuation, carried out by Quotable Value (QV), show the land value of the 29,895 properties in the district has also increased, up 67% to $35 billion. “It’s primarily been driven by strong demand and low interest rates as well as a greater acceptance for remote workers with a noted increase in demand from Auckland buyers,” QV’s national revaluation manager Tim Gibson said. Property owners will soon receive their updated rating value in the post. They are unlikely to correlate with an equally large increase in rates. If owners don’t agree with their new rating value, they can object before 31 May 2022 on the QV website or council offices.
Showbiz Queenstown presents School of Rock the musical based on the hit film. This hilarious musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within.
Aquatic weed spraying in the Kawarau River Boat-based spraying of aquatic weed will be carried out in the Kawarau River from the Kawarau Falls Bridge to the Shotover River Confluence, intermittently between Tuesday 26 April and Thursday 30 June. Diquat in gel form will be used to treat aquatic weeds. This work is dependent on suitable weed, water, and weather conditions and therefore the timing is subject to change.
Featuring songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, this high-octane-smash delivers face-melting guitar riffs and touching romance in equally awesome doses!

QUEENSTOWN’S VOLUNTEER INTERPRETER by Sue Fea
Nothing’s a bother to beautiful Brazilian Kiwi Fabiola Corrêa, who’s been responsible for the safe delivery of at least 10 local Brazilian babies and helped more than a few Portuguese-speaking people out of a pickle.
“I guess people come to me to help because they trust me,” she says. In all of these situations, Fabiola says confidentiality has been paramount. She’s even gone to great lengths to further her education long distance last year graduating with a diploma in interpretation and translation, specialising in health care, ethical challenges, mental health during Covid, migration matters and working with police. It’s been important to have that extra depth of knowledge and perception so that important detail can’t be lost in translation, she says.
Another successful delivery with Fabiola on hand to translate
It all started when she picked up a Brazilian hitchhiker more than seven years ago, who asked her to translate for her appointment at the medical centre. As a result Fabiola was offered a job. She initially worked as a housekeeper in hospitality when she first arrived in Queenstown, because she couldn’t speak English, but Fabiola studied administration and worked as a banker and model in Brazil. “I was only planning to stay here for a few weeks but I went to City Impact Church in Queenstown and heard about the love of God and I’ve never left. I fell in love with this amazing community here.” She worked her way up to hotel supervisor and a management role, before being offered the position at the medical centre. She’s used every opportunity to educate herself further in this country, also studying finance and business, earning herself a Diploma in Money Management, Hotel Management and Mental Health. She’s studying some health science papers for further knowledge in her role.
Fabiola, the friendly face on reception as administrator at Wakatipu Medical Centre (soon to be renamed The Doctors Whakatipu) for more than seven years, arrived in Queenstown in 2009 in her early 20s. She’s now a fully-fledged Kiwi resident with perfect English, but knows the feeling of arriving in a strange land unable to speak the lingo. “I know what it’s like as I’ve been there,” she says. For the past seven years she’s not only been called on at work to help translate for doctors, nurses and specialists, but prior to the first lockdown she was in hot demand in the birthing room, responding to calls at all hours of the day and night. A kind and devoted soul, she has clocked up many kilometres in her own vehicle, without compensation, carrying mothers in labour to Southland Hospital – all this out of the goodness of her heart. “I just love people so I’m more than happy to help,” she says.
For Fabiola, it’s a privilege and an honour to help others voluntarily, and surprisingly there have never been any hugely stressful situations for her while translating. Renowned as a calming influence, she just holds the mothers’ hands throughout the labour, encouraging them that everything will be okay. “It’s always very sweet and calm. My faith helps me get through any difficult situations and I’m usually a very calm person so hopefully that helps them,” she says. On occasions she’s been required to break bad news, like a cancer diagnosis, to non-English speaking patients at the medical centre and Southland Hospital. She’s also been on hand to help the immigrants from Queenstown to start the process for their Immigration medical. There’s been huge demand at work recently too with medical centres so busy doing Immigration medicals from all over for the new NZ Residency Visa 2021 visas.
Her first baby delivery was little Kate on August 28, 2017. Kate turns five this year and Fabiola is now part of every birthday celebration.
While Fabiola does it all for love not money, she’s been showered with lovely gifts from grateful mums, including homemade cakes dropped to her home and the medical centre.
She’s also been called in by the Queenstown Police at times to help translate in cases and investigations. If she chose to she could be paid for it, but Fabiola prefers to volunteer and give her time to help others and the community.
In 2019, at just 31, she took out two categories in the Spirit of Wakatipu Awards – Health and Wellbeing and the People’s Choice Award – both well-deserved honours for her selfless 24/7 dedication to the community.
Fabiola, a self-confessed lover of babies, enjoys a cuddle after translating for yet another birth
Calls for help from the police have been less these past two years, especially with the borders closed. She’s not been required to attend as many labours and births either with Covid restrictions and so many migrant families having left the district. “Many Brazilians who have been stuck here, unable to return home during the past two years, have used the time to learn English themselves, so there’s been less demand,” says Fabiola. Many Brazilians she knows have been attending free English lessons held by YWAM (Youth With A Mission) volunteers at the Presbyterian Church in Stanley Street, Queenstown, every Tuesday. “It’s horrible living somewhere where you can’t speak the language,” she says. “It’s kind of demeaning and makes you feel like you’re the dumbest person in the world.” It’s a big enough feat just setting up so far away from home and when Fabiola settled in Queenstown as a young woman she made the local newspaper back in her Brazilian hometown, Tres Lagoas, where her father is a well-known and respected man. “He’s known as a man of integrity and people in need would come to him and he always said to us, ‘Just give when you see someone in need’, so I’ve grown up with it. It just comes naturally to me and I love to help.”
