Queenstown has had a tough go of it but we’ve got just the tincture to bring the community out from under its Covid duvet: Ten concerts, two free public talks, twelve targeted workshops, 100 musos and even a day of culture immersion – that’s what’s on offer at the 2022 Whakatipu Music Festival this week. This year’s festival is broader than last – the musical fare is rich and varied and LIVE. Sublime classical music by our nation’s finest is complemented with jazz, singer-songwriting, the best of Broadway and taonga pūoro. Workshops by our world-class festival artists given (freely and happily!) across the district for students, their teachers and enthusiastic community musicians give a turbo-boost to year-round lessons and rehearsals. It’s an all-in immersive experience that starts when our 12 young artists arrive early this week. To close off the festival on Easter Monday, we’ve created something pretty special and unique. We’ve commissioned a work specifically to invite all local musicians to play together and alongside professional artists. There is still time to dust off that saxophone or instrument of choice and warm up your vocal chords – we want you to take part!!! We’ll happily send you the music (and even some practice videos) for this fantastic Kia Kōpuni (‘all together’) activity. Or for those who are more inclined to learn and absorb, our new ‘Taste of Art’ day on Saturday 16 is just the ticket: a fully-curated day to learn about taonga pūoro and some classical repertoire staples, plus a full breakfast at Hotel St Moritz, a private guided tour of Starkwhite Gallery with its director, lunch and wine tasting at Nockie’s Palette Wines cellar door, and a concert. All meals, tickets and transportation wrapped into a one gorgeous day out. Planning and delivering any event in a Covid environment is a bit fraught, but Janey Labes (the guru of Covid health and safety amongst other skills) and I concluded that we could, in fact, present a meaningful festival. Such is the nature of chamber music – it’s meant to be performed in smaller settings, and a festival such as this is really a series of small concerts. So by holding our nerve, we’ve walked straight down the middle of event planning and been greeted every step of the way with enthusiasm and gratitude. There’s a palpable energy driving the artists and community towards our event. The show must go on and by crickey… it’s going to! So, Queenstown! Crawl out from under your duvet and enjoy some live music again. Anne Rodda – Whakatipu Music Festival Director

Headspace help for expectant dads by Paul Taylor
Queenstown based dads-to-be are invited to attend a free, practical workshop to help them get some advice and skills to support their partner and family on the parenting road ahead. The Mental health workshop for new dads is the latest community workshop from the Southern Wellbeing Trust and is being delivered by local, experienced dads who will share a man’s view of parenting and provide some real-life advice to support the mental health of dads, their partners and family in the coming months and years ahead. Andrew Dorsey, a workshop facilitator, says doing this workshop before your baby arrives is something practical that dads can do to support their family. “I know from experience that becoming a new parent can be really stressful. Whilst it’s exciting, it’s also totally normal to be apprehensive about becoming a dad. “A lot of blokes typically aren’t the best at talking about things when times get tough, so we wanted to try and give some practical tools and advice to dads, so they can be better prepared themselves and be able to support their partners and families through this big life change.” The tips dads will learn at the workshop might also be useful at other points in life, helping others struggling with their mental health. “This workshop will help you to feel more confident to know how to talk to someone who is having a tough time, whoever they are and how you can actually help.” The MEN-tal Health workshop for Dads is on Wednesday, 13 April, Wakatipu Rugby Club 6 – 9pm. There are only 15 places available and registrations are essential email workshops@southernwellbeingtrust.org to book your place. The workshop is part of the GoodYarn Community Pilot project, being delivered by the Southern Wellbeing Trust in partnership with the Good Programmes Trust.

Don’t put the shrimp on the barbie just yet by Paul Taylor
Millbrook operations manager Ross Mclean says while the golf resort hasn’t had a flood of Australian bookings, there has been a decent bump in domestic travel. “Almost as soon as the announcement came about the borders, people started booking, perhaps looking for one last domestic holiday before international visitors return. “But our Australian bookings are really from July. If you’re having to spend three-and-a-half grand to fly over here at the moment, I just don’t think it’s worthwhile for Australians.” Mclean says July will be a busy month at Millbrook, with Australian business slowly picking up, supporting domestic. Group business begins to bounce back from September onwards. “There’s definitely some confidence about large group movements, again mostly domestic, although we’re getting overseas enquiries, and a lot from the United States early next year. “It’s certainly promising looking forward.”
The first direct Qantas bubble flight arrived in Queenstown from Sydney on April 19, 2021, the same day as the bubble opened across NZ.
New Zealand’s borders finally reopen to Australians this week but it’s anyone’s guess how many will make it as far as Queenstown. There are no direct flights across the Tasman between Queenstown Airport and Australian airports until the end of May, when Qantas will begin flying into ZQN again, followed by Jetstar and Air New Zealand in late June. Queenstown Airport boss Glen Sowry says he expects that could be moved forward, but not by much. “We’ve been talking to all of the airlines very regularly to see what we can do to support them to come back as quickly as possible,” Sowry says. “But in all cases, there’s a significant amount of work required to ramp up to be able to return to Queenstown.” That includes retraining some returning pilots on Required Navigation Performance (RPN) system, which guides planes to the runway surrounded by mountains, as well as de-mothballing the planes themselves, employing cabin crew, building the schedule and selling tickets.
“Passenger volumes have recovered in the past week or two, but I think that’s more indexed to the fact that the Omicron peak appears to have have gone through Auckland and probably the rest of the country now. So, there’s confidence starting to be rebuilt and people are starting to travel again.” Sowry has only been in the role seven months, so has never seen an international flight come into Queenstown. “That’s going to be exciting for everyone here. There are 700-odd people who work at Queenstown Airport across our team border agencies, hospitality, retail, general aviation operators.
Travellers from visa waiver countries, such as the US, the UK and Singapore, can begin to return from May 1 this year, and, like the Aussies, they won’t be required to self-isolate. Mclean expects luxury travel to be the first to recover. But like other businesses, staffing will be an issue, even though Millbrook has retained the majority of its staff through the two-year-period. “Now, it’s ramping from 60% to our pre-Covid levels of 85, 90% occupancy. It’s a struggle across the board but focused more on traditional hospitality, F&B staff, housekeeping and front office.” Find out how Queenstown businesses are preparing for the return of international tourism in this month’s QT Business.
“We’re all very much looking forward to seeing the airport a lot more active and busy, which is what airports are meant to be.”
“Queenstown is an important destination, but they also have to reconnect to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, so it’s about allocating resources.” While there are no direct flights, keen Australians can transit through Auckland, if they can afford a ticket. The border reopens at 11.59pm on Tuesday, April 12, but a return flight on Air NZ between Sydney and Auckland, for example, will cost about $1300pp in those first few weeks. Qantas is about $1800pp return SydneyAuckland, while Jetstar is about $1150, although prices vary depending on dates and times. Demand on the domestic leg, from Auckland to Queenstown, is understood to have tripled compared with the relatively low level of demand pre-border reopening. But there appears to be plenty of capacity on the route, which makes up approximately 70% of ZQN’s domestic business.
Passengers on the first trans-Tasman bubble flight were given a warm welcome when they arrived in Queenstown last April, with family and friends reunited. But they’ll have to wait longer to fly direct this time.

Trust continues to deliver by Paul Taylor
It has been a big month for the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust. Two weeks ago, the trust handed over its latest new homes, located in the Alps View development at Lake Hayes Estate, to ten families. Then, last week it received resource consent for its biggest project to date, the 68-lot Tewa Banks development in Arrowtown. Trust executive officer Julie Scott says the civil works on the site, in Jopp Street, could begin in spring this year, followed by house construction in 2023 and the first families moving in 2024. “It’ll be a mixed tenure development, so we’ll have 45 going into the Secure Home Programme and the remainder a mixture of rentals, senior housing affordable rentals, rent-to-buy programmes.” In August, the trust commissioned sustainability experts Urban Advisory (TUA) and Re/volve Energy to review its masterplan for the Arrowtown development in Arrowtown, in an effort to lower the carbon footprint and future-proof the plans. There was an option to go back to the drawing board, but with 800 households on its books waiting for affordable accommodation, the trust board has opted to continue with the original resource consent and make changes through the process. “We’re committed to making a number of amendments to improve the energy efficiency of the homes and sustainability of the overall development,” Scott says. “It’s been incredibly in-depth, pretty full on, but rather than opt for a full redesign, we’ll make amendments and then take a whole lot of learnings and recommendations into our future projects, especially the next time we get a greenfield site. “We obtained the original masterplan probably about three years ago, and we’ve got this massive waiting list of people. So, we do need to just get on the build.” Prices for the properties have not yet been finalised, but they are likely to be in the $300k to $500k range, far below the median Arrowtown price of $1.6 million. Under the Secure Home programme, the household buys in at the cost of construction and then pays a below-market ground rent on the land, which the trust retains. In the Alps View development at Lake Hayes Estate, the properties two- and three-bedroom homes, built by local construction company Breen Homes, sold for between $334k and $392k. The average ground rent is $115 per week. The lease term is 100 years. The trust has a solid pipeline of work over the next few years, thanks in part to inclusionary zoning, which sees developers set aside land for affordable housing. It has consent lodged for 14 houses in Wanaka’s Northlake development, which it will build this year, and also 28 sections in the Longview subdivision in Lake Hawea, which will be built in stages beginning this spring. In Queenstown, its next developments will be 60 sections in the Coneburn subdivision, and then some sections in the Tomasi / Bullendale Special Housing Area development in Arthurs Point.
Kris and Karla Lodge at their Alps View home
“We will be able to assist many local families over the next few years.” Queenstowners Kris and Karla Lodge were the recipients of one of the 10 Alps View homes. “Owning this home means the world to us, it’s for the rest of our lives,” Karla says. “We wouldn’t be able to stay in Queenstown if we didn’t have this – we would never be able to afford to buy a home here with the current property prices. Now, it feels like we can enjoy life in Queenstown how it’s meant to be enjoyed.” The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development also provides support with a 15-year interest-free loan through its Progressive Home Ownership Fund.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
A common conversation topic around town is the gap between now and the ski season and how tourism and hospitality operators are doing everything they can to a) keep their businesses alive while they wait with bated breath for our tourists to arrive and b) help others. Three cheers for the Lone Star which has been hosting events for the local Czech and Slovak club’s fundraisers for Ukraine and doing all they can to support community groups, even though the council seems hellbent on blocking access to their premises with seemingly endless and ever expanding road digging up projects. Because of all the comments I’ve had about the road nightmares, I’ve been trying to find out who is the person responsible for ensuring the work needs doing, and is being done correctly. If anyone knows, can they PLEASE tell me. I know who the company is and I’ve had dangerous bladder control issues reading their very short list of testimonials from satisfied customers called “Client Representative” and “Resident”. I’ve never met anyone blessed with either of those names. I’m hearing that the good AirBNB properties are getting very busy with bookings for July onwards so here’s hoping the snow gods do the decent thing and have our mountains looking like enormous meringues all season. Before that, it’s time for all the autumn things - gathering walnuts and getting mud all over my book on how to propagate. I’ve got dozens of mulberry tree cuttings that I’m trying to grow, and have 100 of the biggest walnuts I could find and trying to get them to sprout as well. I’m addicted to propagating hydrangeas and have given away hundreds of rooted cuttings. I did a lot of seed collecting, but in my own inefficient way, I forgot to write the names of the plants they came from on the bags, so now I’ve just got masses of mystery maybe marvellous, maybe monstrous seeds. Now that I’m too old to have any more children, I have to make do with making baby plants and making sure there’s plenty of nice nest building material for all the birds to use in spring. There are some people who think a fantail coming into the house means someone in the house will die. If that is the case, we are due a massacre of enormous proportions in ours. There are so many bold little fantails whizzing in and out of our house the whole time. I think it’s like our children doing their OE. They want to experience other cultures and see the world before they settle down and start a family. My fantail friends love to look at themselves in mirrors and hang off my lights poohing in my bath and on the lampshades. Easter is looming and already I have eaten the Patagonia egg I was going to give to my son. It’s just not safe to leave that sort of treasure lying about looking unloved. And I’ve also made the mistake of opening the box of Queen Anne dark chocolate boysenberry marshmallow bars (Nathan at Raeward Fresh is a VERY bad influence) that I was going to give people I don’t like enough to give a Patagonia egg to, but I don’t really like giving away the Queen Anne ones either, and seem to have eaten quite a few of them already. I often wonder if Jesus knew that his sacrifice would lead to such delicious Easter treats. He always sounds a very nice chap, so I’m sure he’d be pretty chuffed.

They say, good wood needs to have a year on the field in the weather before being ready for the fireplace, some even LONGER - 5 -6 years. Fresh cut wood is full of moisture. Think about it. Its roots are expansive, trailing in the ground finding new moist territory, to bring back to the truck which acts as the mains.

Last winter I saw my neighbours burning their fresh tree kill. Their chimney huffs and puffs, billowing with smoke during the day. You see, some smoke is ok to start with, but it shouldn’t hang around.
SERVICES
That’s what fresh wood does, and of no warming comfort. For some, fire blazing is just primal instinct. These folk take it very seriously and crave nothing more than stoking a fire and getting a good reception of caveman TV. They get a kick out of dedicating an evening to stacking a respectable wall of wood and slowing deconstructing it as we eat into the bitter coldness. It’s these people who will tell you that split Pine and Douglas fir are best for kindling. This wood will splinter under the force of the axe. Shaving thin slices of wood excellent for shaping into a tepee firestarter. It’s these people who whisper ‘blue gum’ like a religious hail Mary. The wood that burns long and strong throughout the night and still smouldering the next morning. They are the folk that’ll confidently say that 10 cubes will see your household through the season. It just takes a public admittance about your naivety to your winter wood supply and these people will crackle with excitement. They will offer their jacket and be in your ear all night offloading their timeless advice.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Music festival this weekend by Paul Taylor
It’s coming - the Whakatipu Music Festival is ready to bring Queenstown alive with music. New Zealand’s top professional and emerging artists are in town this week for workshops and rehearsals before taking to the Queenstown Memorial Centre stage this Easter weekend. Joining them are a variety of locally-grown musicians, including community ensembles, schoolchildren and Wakatipu High School production students, showcasing the best of singer-songwriting talent, Broadway hits, classical and jazz music. Festival director Anne Rodda says music lovers should get ready for a weekend full of incredible talent and beautiful performances. “The festival is so much more than live performances,” she says. “During the week free-of-charge workshops and piano, violin and woodwind masterclasses are presented by world-class performers Stephen De Pledge, Robin Wilson and Bridget Douglas.” Artists will also engage with local schools, sharing their talents and working with music students, which Anne describes as “the sort of spark that can be a life’s catalyst”. Local musicians have the chance to play alongside professional artists in the final event of the weekend, an en masse Kia Kōpuni performance. Kiwi but normally London-based composer, Lucy Mulgan, created a work that is orchestrated specifically for the diverse ability range of the festival’s community of artists. It’s open to anyone, regardless of skill level, instrument or vocal ability.

Music is key to the festival, but there is a broader artistic focus as well. This year, there is a festival within a festival - an all-encompassing day package featuring the best arts, culture, wine and food offerings around Queenstown, called A Taste of Art.
Wakatipu High School Footloose production group
“Everything’s planned and organised for you with all meals, activities and transport included. So, all you need to worry about is who to bring,” Rodda says. With reduced indoor numbers, some of the concerts are close to capacity. A priority for event organisers has been ensuring the festival complies with the changing COVID landscape and protects its 100-plus performers. “While we’ve removed the requirement for guests to have vaccine passes, we’ll still be asking everyone to wear a mask and practice social distancing.”.

Arts+Culture Get quilting to celebrate library’s 145th birthday by Bethany Rogers
A community quilt project will help mark the Queenstown Library’s 145th birthday. The community is invited to record what they love most about the district on a fabric square that will become part of a celebratory quilt. “It was very recently Queenstown Library’s 145th Birthday but the party we’d planned couldn’t go ahead,” explains librarian Amy O’Reilly. First opened in 1877 in the schist stone building on the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Street, the library has a rich history of bringing the community together. Notably, the community came together to save the library and its buildings in the 1960s, when the Council proposed demolishing the ageing building. After an outcry that was heard across the nation, the library was saved and duly refurbished. An extension was added in 1971, and the library relocated to its current location on Gorge Road in 1999.

“Though we couldn’t physically bring people together for a party to celebrate the library’s birthday, we still wanted to do something to mark the occasion and bring the community together.
highlight the positives of living here. It’s about our sense of resilience, and appreciating and showing gratitude for the place we live in.
“Throughout history, quilting has been used to bring people together and to connect people, which is exactly what we wanted to do, so we thought it would be perfect.”
Those interested can find a quilting station, help and more information at the Queenstown Library. Completed quilt squares should be submitted to the library by Friday 29 April.
Quilts have been used since Medieval times, not just to keep people warm at night, but also to record stories and commemorate special events. Some quilts became family heirlooms and were passed down through generations, surviving for centuries. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is the largest ongoing community art project globally. The quilt is made of patches containing the names of people who have died from AIDS. It weighs 54 tonnes, and if laid out, it would cover 1.3 million square feet. Amy says the rich history of quilting to remember and connect with others inspired the project. “Reading about quilts like the AIDS Memorial Quilt and how it brings everyone together is where the inspiration came from.” Community groups like the Queenstown Quilters, the Wakatipu Senior Citizens Association and the Queenstown Community Harvest Gardens have already expressed an interest. Friends of the library with a background in fashion and textiles have also come forward to offer their assistance in putting the quilt together. Anyone can contribute a square. It needs to measure 20cm x 20cm, with a design 17cm x 17cm in size (allowing a seam of at least 1.5 cm on all sides). It can be painted, embroidered, decorated with fabric glue and sequins – whatever the creator would like – so long as the material can be quilted. “We’ve asked that the squares be based around the theme of what we love most about the Queenstown Lakes region,” explains Amy, “And the reason I chose that theme, in particular, is because it’s nice and uplifting and positive.” “After everything that has happened over the past couple of years, we don’t want to ignore that, but I feel like we should
“We have such an amazing community and there are so many amazing community groups doing great things. I want this quilt to highlight that.”

Check out First Thursdays on instagram or facebook to know when we restart: @firstthursdaysqt The recent change in regulations is making events easier, and we hope to build towards a return of a fun and accessible First Thursdays Queenstown in the months to come. New Zealand-based designer and artist Tim Christie’s latest exhibition at Artbay is titled POPTIC, a 3D popping exhibition that offers an eclectic mix of art works. A culmination of everything Christie has been exploring with light art over the last couple of years, POPTIC combines the idea of Pop art and Op (or Optical) art. Christie’s exhibition incorporates elements of his broader, multidisciplinary practice, including digital art and weaving, to create radiant evolutions of existing compositions through light-specific innovations that explore new territories.
A visit to Artbay allows art lovers to observe how different hues of light pass through and interact with translucent ink and coloured plastic, how light effectively brings a piece to life by ‘animating’ the imagery. Tim cleverly interweaves two different faces, the transitioning light reveals the individual faces, as well as various hybrid combinations. 15th April – 27th May at Artbay - Upstairs Exhibition Gallery - from 11am–5pm daily. Skydive for cancer support by Paul Taylor
There are free skydives on offer for anyone who can raise more than $1000 for the Cancer Society. NZONE Skydive Queenstown and Skydive Wanaka is hosting the ‘Jump for Cancer’ charity day on Saturday, 14 May. Cancer Society Otago and Southland chief executive Rachael Hart will take the plunge.
“I have witnessed so much pain and anxiety watching our patients go through their cancer journey. I challenge businesses and individuals to take the plunge with me so we can all make a difference.” You can sign up as a team, such as a workplace, or as an individual. Regardless, each person must raise $1000 or more to qualify for a free jump. Skydivers can also arrange another time in May if these jump days do not suit.
“I am terrified of heights but if skydiving was easy, it wouldn’t be a challenge. Everyday 71 New Zealanders hear the words ‘you have cancer’. How frightening would it be to hear these words. I am jumping for all these brave people that live with cancer every day.
The money raised will support people with cancer and programmes to help prevent cancer.

...BEATING THE ODDS ALL ROUND By Sue Fea
Everybody loves a happy ending, and two Queenstown Brazilian women of the same name who both faced life’s most difficult battle together, got just that. The ‘two Julianas’ are both now each enjoying life’s greatest blessing – children. Juliana Costa Fernandes was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer two days before her wedding in February, 2018. It was anybody’s worst nightmare, let alone a beautiful brideto-be. At 38, Juliana’s greatest longing was to have children and so as she headed into multiple rounds of chemotherapy with her new husband, Armindo Machado Junior, at her side Juliana felt as if her lifelong dream had been shattered.
cry and scream. I was five weeks pregnant,” says Juliana. Armindo, who was nearby, came running to her side thinking only the worst, but was greeted with the best. Her very surprised doctor then postponed the breast reconstruction to protect the baby, leaving Juliana with breast expanders implanted for almost twice the normal time – 11 months. “It was like, let’s start a new life and concentrate all our efforts onto this baby,” she says. Despite the elation, it was a difficult journey, being pregnant through the Covid pandemic with all of her family so far away in Brazil. “I had no grandmother, mum, or mother-in-law to support me through a stressful time with regular checks and monitoring of the baby,” she says. “I’m so grateful though as I have a lot of lovely friends in Queenstown who supported us. It was awesome.” The hospital called her in at 32 weeks and she was told to stop work as the baby was quite small, with monitoring of its heart beat and ultrasound scans several times a week in Invercargill and Dunedin. Blood clots during her cancer treatment meant she had to take blood thinners during pregnancy, but Juliana was induced at 36 weeks and delivered a healthy, 2.5kg baby girl, named Liz, naturally on October 22. “It was so nice. I really enjoyed the process. It was so special for me.” A local friend arrived with colostrum that she’d saved for Juliana’s baby to get her started, with Juliana obviously having had a double mastectomy. “Lots of friends called and offered to breastfeed her in those early weeks.”
Juliana and husband Armindo, soon after little Liz was born late last year
As for her reconstruction surgery, that should be underway very soon. “It’s not been easy, but I’m feeling good and I’m extremely happy with my baby,” she says. “I pray every day because I’m so happy. She’s wonderful, so calm, and she loves music.” Juliana, an accomplished performer, held a Gratitude Festival locally to raise funds for the Cancer Society after she had recovered in 2019.
Once the cancer was thankfully nailed by the end of 2019 Juliana took her place in the queue for IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) fertility treatment. “I did a cycle of IVF treatment more than a year ago and it failed, so the doctor told me I would need an egg donor,” says Juliana.
At each other’s sides during their breast cancer battles, Juliana and her good friend, fellow Queenstown Brazilian Juliana de Freitas (Moore) can now celebrate together, albeit from afar. The two Julianas became good friends through their ordeals. “I was finishing my treatment and her husband, Armindo, reached out and said his wife was going through the same thing and we started talking from there,” says Juliana de Freitas (Moore). Her healthy little girl Mia is now five – another miracle baby who escaped the odds. While Juliana and Mia have now moved to Nelson, Juliana received her shock diagnosis in 2016, just days before leaving Queenstown on her honeymoon with her then Scottish husband, Peter Moore. She discovered a lump on her breast and insisted on having checks before they left. Fortunately she did and the checks revealed she was three weeks pregnant. Juliana says she was told by doctors to forfeit her baby as she would have more chance of survival, but this was never an option for her. Chemotherapy had to be delayed until she was three months pregnant to protect the baby. By then Juliana had had emergency surgery to remove her breast and has been fit and well for some years now.
She lined up a good friend, who underwent all the necessary tests and examinations. “The doctor said it was a long process and I was waiting for my breast reconstruction surgery as well, so he suggested that during this we could organise to transfer the egg.” All the preparation for her surgery was underway, expanders implanted, and Juliana was in Invercargill ready to see her surgeon. “I needed to see the nurse first to have my iron and Vitamin B12 checked after all that chemotherapy,” she says. “My iron was a bit low and my period was two days late, which I didn’t think was worth mentioning, but the nurse asked and absolutely insisted that I take a pregnancy test,” says Juliana. “I told her, ‘No, the doctor said I cannot have any babies after the cancer treatment’.” Thankfully, the nurse wasn’t having a bar of that. “She walked back in after the test and said, ‘Do you want to have a baby?’, with a big smile, and I started to
Proud Mum and Dad – Juliana and Armindo with their little miracle baby, Liz
She chose to omit one of the chemotherapy drugs that could harm her baby. “Doctors were very clear that I was risking my life opting not to have one of the chemotherapy drugs as there were no studies about whether it would still work,” she says. “I was willing to risk my life, fully aware of the consequences, but for me it was the right thing to do.” A few months after Mia’s birth by emergency Caesarean in December, 2016, also at 36 weeks, Juliana underwent another full year of chemotherapy, receiving the drug that she couldn’t take while pregnant. “I’m so incredibly lucky that it all worked out in our favour, even though I didn’t follow standard medical procedures. Mia is super healthy and I’m also well and healthy five years on.” Juliana de Freitas (Moore), now living in Nelson with her little miracle, Mia

Health boss resigns by Paul Taylor
Southern District Health Board boss Chris Fleming is stepping down to pursue new business opportunities with his family.
“Most recently he and all staff have been focused on the challenge of Covid-19, including the successful rollout of the vaccination programme.
Fleming, who has spent 30 years in the health sector and led three different district health boards, will finish up on 30 June.
Hodgson says leading the SDHB is “not for the faint-hearted”.
He has led the SDHB through a difficult period, with failures in cancer care, waiting lists and major financial deficits, not to mention the pandemic. The resignation comes as Health New Zealand, a new Crown entity, prepares to take over the organisation of 20 district health boards on 1 July. “For the past couple of years, I have been considering future opportunities to purchase a business that I could work together with my wife and provide my son an opportunity to support him to secure his future,” he said.
“Its challenges have always been cultural, geographical, and financial. The forthcoming New Dunedin Hospital and the move to the new health system have both presented the opportunity and obligation to create New Zealand’s most modern Health system. Chris has seen us begin that journey.” The Chief Executive of Health New Zealand will determine the next steps in terms of leadership for Southern DHB staff as it transitions to Health NZ. No formal decisions have yet been made.
“Despite the exciting future ahead in health, with the transition to Health New Zealand, I have been contemplating the right move for me and my family, and I’ve decided that the time is right for me to do something completely different for now. “It is likely that I may become involved in the health system again in the future but for now will focus on establishing ourselves in the businesses we are acquiring.” He will relocate to the Waikato, where he’s originally from. Fleming has been boss of SDHB for six years, having previously been chief executive for South Canterbury and Nelson Marlborough. “We have made some great achievements in the southern health system, and there is plenty more to come under the new Health NZ banner, personally I am supportive of the intentions behind the reforms and believe it will strengthen the New Zealand Health System.” Southern DHB Chair Pete Hodgson says the board is grateful for Fleming’s efforts in leading the organisation. “Chris has led the DHB through both difficult and successful times. He has served under two separate boards and a set of Commissioners. He has led the significant improvement of the Board’s financial deficits, helped to resolve multiple clinical challenges, and has been deeply immersed in the New Dunedin Hospital project.

COMMUNITY NOTES
In response to a growing need among our youth to have more support services and options available to them, coupled with a passionate vision to house a multidisciplinary, holistic, safe and supportive environment where rangitahi can come in and engage in a variety of ways that support their wellbeing, Whakatipu Youth Trust are excited to have expanded their services to now include youth counselling and youth social work! ‘Youth’ by definition has no universally accepted classification. In essence those described as a youth fit into a fluid category where many significant developmental processes and milestones take place between 10 – 24 years old. A youth is someone living in the period of transition from the dependence of childhood to the independence of adulthood. Consequently, ‘Youth’ or ‘Rangitahi’ require specialised skills, approaches and professionals that are knowledgeable and trained specifically to respond to their diversity of ages and stages within this range. Whakatipu Youth Trust works alongside young people aged 10-24 years in line with Mana Taiohi Youth Development Principles. These principles are based around enhancing protective factors in young people’s lives, supporting a sense of belonging and connectedness to key social environments, ensuring young people have safe and caring relationships, and promoting young people’s active participation and engagement in all areas of their lives. At the core of this strategy is a youth-centred, strengthbased approach towards positive development of young people. Working from this framework helps ensure young people are fully prepared for adult life by addressing broader changing needs instead of focusing primarily on solving or fixing their ‘problems’. We are passionate about the concept that ‘it takes a village to raise a child ‘and invite other organisations to enjoy our youth focussed and youth friendly space. We house Wakatipu High School ‘offsite’ and Central Otago Youth Employment programmes during the school week along with other organisations that work with youth. Last year, thanks to Central Lakes Family Service we were able to introduce a Youth Social Worker onsite which is still in place and provided the platform to develop the clinical side of our organisation to now include our own Youth Counsellor and Youth Social Worker. At Whakatipu Youth Trust young people can connect and have their wellbeing needs met in many and varied ways. These include our regular programmes, events, lifeskill education, LGBT+ support, school engagement and our specialist kaimahi services being the Youth Counselling, Youth Social Work, Youth Mentoring and Attendance Service, amongst many other youth centred initiatives. Many of these activities are under the roof of our awesome community youth centre, The Loft, or youth may decide they would rather meet their support professional outdoors while doing a fun activity or chat over some kai at a café. The possibilities are endless but all with the same goal of being wherever or however a young person feels safe and comfortable.
Catering to all youth age groups within the youth age group and accommodating such a diverse range of needs is not without its challenges but fortunately we have a passionate, dedicated, and hardworking team of staff and volunteers who genuinely believe in the possibilities and positive outcomes for our young people. Likewise, we are forever grateful to those who invest time, energy, enthusiasm, expertise, funds, donations and their belief in our rangitahi community and the very real potential in each and every one of them. If you too would like to help us, help our young people please click this link to our website: https://www.whakatipuyouthtrust.co.nz/ support/ An explanation of our services can be found below: Youth Social Work: Walking together, social work can support youth to develop the tools and skills they may require to navigate their environment safely. Social work can provide psycoeducation, advocacy and coordinate a range of other supports and services for rangitahi. Youth Counselling: Counselling is a safe space for young people to express their thoughts, feelings, emotions, struggles, worries and the positive stuff to help explore who they are, what they want in life, unhook from things they are stuck on and how to lead a purposeful and meaningful life. Youth Mentoring: Walking alongside, mentoring can provide rangitahi with an alternative trusted adult who can support young people to achieve goals, grow life skills, build resilience, ensure their voice is heard and realise their potential. Mentoring can be one-on-one or group based. Youth Engagement Facilitation: Facilitates rangitahi to engage in positive youth development opportunities, programmes and events. In a youth centred, safe space where young people can connect with others, feel they belong and their voices heard. Attendance Advisory: Working with families and schools to re-engage tamariki back into education as well as refer and connect students/ families with social service support if required.

- LOCAL WOMEN SHARE THEIR INFERTILITY JOURNEYS
By Sue Fea The past two years have been an emotional rollercoaster for many families, without throwing infertility battles into the mix, but for two Queenstown couples it’s been well worth the ride. For Monika Divers-Sidor and her husband, Nick Divers, all the heartaches of their more than fouryear battle disappeared when they got double for their trouble last year. Monika, who has her own drinks sales company, and Nick, who’s a civil engineer, married after meeting while both travelling in London 15 years ago. They settled in New Zealand, living most of the past 10 years in Queenstown. Monika had been advised by a doctor not to get pregnant because she was the carrier of a genetic disorder that could lead to birth defects. “I’d never really even tried to get pregnant as I was told by the doctor the risks were too high,” says Monika. “Looking back I probably shouldn’t have listened to him.” Monika, who is originally from Poland, even explored travelling back to Poland for her sister to become an egg donor, another exhausting process which ended abruptly when Polish law changed. She and Nick also went through a huge upheaval while living in Blenheim before moving south. Their entire house and belongings burned to the ground, forcing them to rebuild from nothing. “Children were always in the back of my mind,” she says. Monika gave IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) a go, qualifying for government funding due to the condition. Two rounds didn’t work and the final one resulted in a single embryo that was genetically tested and confirmed to have abnormalities. “I cried for a day and then moved on to the adoption process.” It took about four years of jumping hoops and filling out literally a thousand pages of documentation to pursue international adoption. They travelled the journey with two other New Zealand families doing the same thing. “New Zealand only has a few countries that it has adoption agreements with. We chose Thailand because we felt it would be the best match for us” she says. It was a year before little 14-month old girl Sarun was matched with them. “We received an
email with a photo and a little story about her background, saying this is your child.” Covid border closures meant they had to sit tight for another whole year while Sarun stayed with her Thai foster family. “We tried so hard to get over there and get her but we just had to wait.” The whole journey was hugely stressful and expensive. “I’d cry every night, heartbroken that we couldn’t go and collect our little girl after all this time,” she says. Somehow during that first six months of the yearlong painstaking wait Monika says she and Nick felt strong enough to try for a baby as well. “We were always scared about what could happen, or if something may go wrong, but by then we knew we had a daughter of our own, so we had the strength to face it,” she says. “We knew we had an adoption match so thought maybe we should try and see if we can also have another child.” Once she fell pregnant it was a huge shock. Test and scan after test and scan kept confirming all was well, which was a huge relief. “For the first five months I couldn’t believe it was happening. I was 38 by then.” Six months into her pregnancy Monika travelled to Bangkok with Nick to get little Sarun under very strict Thai quarantine rules. They collected Sarun, by then two years and three months old, and headed straight home to New Zealand to two weeks more quarantine, finally being released on New Year’s Day last year Monika heavily pregnant. Their baby, Hania, was born on February 25, just seven weeks later, but three weeks early. “Suddenly we went from none, to two kids in three months. It was a circus,” smiles Monika. Nick took six months paternity leave to help with the adjustment, Monika sleeping with little Sarun for a year to settle her in and Nick on night-time expressed Mum milk feeds for Hania. In the midst of all this Monika had launched her new business, Polished Wines, two weeks before the 2020 lockdown. Things soon settled down and now Sarun is a typical Kiwi kid, who just adores her thirteenmonth-old baby sister. “There’s no difference in the way I love and treat them. They’re both mine. Love is love,” says
Monika, who found one of the hardest things was being unable to have her mum, a Polish midwife, here for help and support due to closed borders. Monika will share her story as guest speaker at Fertility NZ Support Queenstown, a confidential support group for local women and men facing fertility struggles, on May 10. To get in touch with the group, or come along, contact Eva Hooper on: queenstownsupport@ fertilitynz.org.nz or 027 346 5565, or join the private Facebook group: FNZ Queenstown Fertility Support Both women and men all welcome. BREAK-OUT STORY: Exploring All Options A Queenstown couple, who battled through a number of rounds of IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) against the medical odds, finally turned to a Christchurch egg donor for help. In November, the couple, who’d emigrated from the UK in 2013 and wish to remain anonymous, had a healthy little boy late last year, after the
QUEENSTOWN UNITES AGAINST WAR
first of the 13 embryos produced was implanted successfully. He’s now a bouncy five-month-old and his parents couldn’t be more delighted. Even at 40, the woman says she’s eager to go back for round two with 12 more embryos frozen and waiting. “They implanted the first embryo into me in January last year in Christchurch and I was so lucky that it took. It was such amazing news to finally be pregnant after a four or fiveyear battle,” she says. “I couldn’t quite believe it. It was quite scary, like uh, oh! Is this happening?” “Part of me said I would never have babies and I’d almost settled for that,” she says. After two or three years of trying to fall pregnant she had been diagnosed with endometriosis, which can affect fertility, and during surgery it was discovered she also had blocked fallopian tubes. “I’d probably had that since I was born. Blood tests also revealed that at 36 I was already going through early peri-menopause (ovarian failure),” she says. “We tried IVF unsuccessfully. The doctor said I could try it with my own eggs but there was only a slim chance.” It was then that the couple decided to pursue an egg donor. “We were encouraged to use a sister or long-time friend from back home but it was just after the 2020 lockdown so there was no way to travel there.” They went on the New Zealand egg donor register, facing a one-year wait for an egg. Anonymous egg donations aren’t allowed in New Zealand. “A lovely lady in Christchurch who had completed her family and wanted to donate went through that all for us, being pumped with hormones and going through the whole egg retrieval process. We were so grateful,” she says. “We got 19 eggs from her. It was amazing!” Egg quality checks still left them with 14 or 15 eggs and they now have 12 embryos frozen ready to hopefully have another child. “It was such a hard journey with family on the other side of the world. I was grieving and it was really hard to accept as I’d always wanted children,” she says. The Wakatipu community has been incredibly supportive though. “Even after we found a donor women here said they would have done that for us.” Four to six-weekly scans especially due to her age.
were
reassuring,
“We just adore our little boy. It’s just wonderful and hopefully we can have more. I can’t believe how generous people are donating eggs here.” Her advice to others is to research well though as it’s not an easy pathway and can take its toll mentally and emotionally. “Our son may grow up and want to connect with the egg donor and that’s perfectly fine, but that will be totally his decision,” she says. While obviously it’s important to be sure you have the right partner first, Fertility NZ Support Queenstown’s Eva Hooper says many women are waiting until they’re well into their 30s to try and get pregnant. One in four women in New Zealand experiences infertility, or struggles getting pregnant, she says. Eva and her husband were taken by surprise when she was 33 and they first tried. “It wasn’t as easy as we’d imagined. We thought it would take six months max, but ended up taking us over three years.” Eva’s advice is if a couple has not achieved pregnancy after one year they should seek professional help getting pregnant. However, if the woman is over the age of 35, or has some family history of infertility, a couple should not wait a full year but only six months before getting help.
by Sue Fea A Queenstown woman, whose Polish family back home have all packed Ukrainian refugees into their homes, is doing all she can from this side of the world to raise funds and house desperate Ukrainians in Poland. Monika Divers-Sidor, who’s lived in New Zealand for almost 10 years, says everybody she knows back in her home country has opened their homes to homeless Ukrainian refugees, most turning up with only the clothes they’re wearing. “My parents in Gdansk are hosting an 11-yearold girl, Ania, and her grandmother, Galina, who is in her 70s,” says Monika. “They escaped from Kharkiv through the night during bombing and my parents snapped them up from the border and Mum brought them home a month ago.” Monika’s best friend has taken in a seven-yearold, Timoty, with his mum, while Monika has been busy organising homes for many others to go to from here in Queenstown. “We’ve been helping a mum and an eight-year-old girl, Masza, who’s been drawing me pictures. They lost everything. Their apartment is just ashes and Masza’s dad is still back in Ukraine fighting the Russians,” says Monika, clearly moved by the trauma back home. Masza and her mum are now staying with a Ukrainian lady who lives in Poland, several hours from Gdansk. “They escaped to the border under heavy artillery fire and bombing. I’m now looking for a psychologist to help little Masza. She’s been through so much trauma.” Monika says most Polish people would never have considered taking refugees into their homes before the war. “But it’s just what you do now.” “My dad was going to move out of his room and sleep on the couch to take in more refugees,” she says. “I wanted to fly home and help but my mother said it’s more useful to have you there raising funds for everybody who’s taken in refugees. Anyway, my dad said, ‘Your room is now taken!’” says Monika. A recent cry for help from well-known Queenstown singer performer Shay Muddle and his Ukrainian partner, Ksena Proskurina, to help Ksena’s sister Kateryna and her toddler, brought Monika to the rescue. They needed a Polish-speaking person to take care of things online. A Give A Little Page then received an overwhelming response online, raising $6000 to help set Kateryna and little 21-month-old Arina up in their own accommodation. They’d been holed up in a two-room unit with about 14 others in workers’ accommodation in a Polish village after escaping to the border. They had just two days to get out of the unit.
Ukrainian refugees Kateryna and her toddler, Arina, now safe and well with a welcoming Polish family
“People have been so generous here. It’s amazing,” says Ksena. “One Queenstown man, whose business has been hit hard by Covid and who has a young family, donated $500, while a local Russian family gave $300 and my neighbour $200.” Kateryna is now doing great and little Arina is preparing to start kindergarten in Poland. “Monika has been amazingly generous,” says Ksena. “It’s incredible what she’s done. She found a friend who hired a rental car and drove six hours to collect Katya (Kateryna) and little Arina, taking them to Monika’s Polish-speaking aunt and uncle’s where they helped organise papers and benefits.” Ksena has only just got her mother to agree to leave her home in Eastern Ukraine with the focus of the bombing moving there. She had just days until the end of last week, when the bombing was set to escalate, to get to Warsaw where Ksena has arranged a flight for her to get to Spain. “Poland and Germany are overcrowded now. It’s craziness.” Once Ksena’s New Zealand residency is approved she will fly her mother, who’s in her late 50s, to Queenstown to care for her here. More coral bleaching at Great Barrier Reef, Australia confirms One of the world’s most cherished natural wonders -- the Great Barrier Reef -- has suffered a widespread sixth bleaching event, officials confirmed recently after completing aerial surveyance of the 2,200km-long marine park. United Nations scientists are currently in Australia, to carry out a ten-day mission to examine the condition of the reef, and see whether enough is being done to protect the sprawling ecosystem that extends over 215,000 square km’s. This is the fourth time in six years that the Great Barrier Reef has been impacted by bleaching, a response by the corals when they’re stressed by increased temperatures, causing them to expel the green algae that gives them color, and reveal a white skeleton. Scientists are particularly concerned that this bleaching event has taken place during La Niña, a weather system which normally creates cooler temperatures. While bleaching does not automatically cause the coral to die, it can make corals more vulnerable to disease and impede their ability to spawn, experts say. Scientists warn that if high ocean temperatures continue, bleaching events will become more frequent. The stressed coral will then have less time to recover and more will die as a result. ABC
This Bonkers 228.3 Carat White Diamond, the Largest in Auction History, Could Fetch Up to $US30 Million This Spring The impressive stone, dubbed “The Rock,” has an estimated value between $US20 and $US30 million. Christie’s is slated to have a blockbuster Spring with the upcoming sale of “The Rock,” the largest white diamond to ever be offered at auction. “I’ve been at Christie’s for 25 years and Christie’s has been around for 256 years and in all of this time, this is the largest white diamond that’s ever come up for sale at auction,” Rahul Kadakia told Robb Report. “That’s quite something. It’s really a unicorn.” The 228.31-carat stone, has only passed through three previous owners’ hands and Kadakia says Christie’s first got wind of the diamond from the original owner approximately 20 years ago. The company was involved with the first transaction of the stone, which was sold privately. “The current owner decided that the market is quite healthy, which is true,” says Kadakia. The diamond market is in a particularly active space right now. Our auction sales last year, doubled the sales from 2020.”

$UKP25B: The cost of building London’s newest railway line. The line, called the Elizabeth line will open to the public in June and stretches 100km across the city and took 13 years to construct The Elizabeth line is built by Crossrail Ltd and is a highly-anticipated, new railway that stretches east to west across London. It’s the first new underground railway line in the city since 1979. Paddington Station on the Elizabeth line is so big that London’s tallest skyscraper, the Shard, could fit inside if laid flat. The Elizabeth line was initially planned 23 years ago. After missing several deadlines for its opening, its expects it to debut by the end of June. It cost £1 million ($1.9 million) per meter to build the tunnel between the Elizabeth line and the Bakerloo line at Paddington Station. Eight tunneling machines — each at 1,000 tonnes — were used to created 42km of new rail tunnels below London, according to Crossrail. The Elizabeth line is expected to serve around 250 million passengers every year, stopping at 41 stations along the full route — 10 are newly built and 30 are refurbishments of existing stations. A journey from the financial hub of Canary Wharf to Heathrow Airport will takes 38 minutes on the Elizabeth Line, at the cost of a normal tube fare. Business Insider

MEL GAZZARD
A LEGACY OF LEARNING
After that it was time to spread their wings to Australia for two years, where Mel was in charge of a country school just outside Melbourne. Their skills were in demand with the education system there back then not as progressive as New Zealand’s. “The resources for reading and mathematics were pretty outdated back then compared with New Zealand, but it was different in each state,” says Mel. There were no school inspectors like New Zealand had. “When they did come they only spent a little while watching what you were doing then wrote a report that you could fit on a postage stamp,” grins Mel. The Aboriginal people were not treated particularly well back then either. Teaching positions in Bluff and Invercargill followed, their two sons, now 50 and 48, arriving during this time, followed by a role for Mel as deputy principal in Waitara in Taranaki. The Ministry had acquired the land for the school off the local iwi and it was a significant site, steeped in important Maori history.
Mel and wife Sylvia, enjoying retirement
He was the face of Queenstown Primary School for almost 20 years, renowned for passing on his love of sport and the outdoors to the kids by joining in with them on the sports field every lunchtime. A popular principal, Mel Gazzard, who taught all over the South Island, in Australia and briefly in Colorado, also did a four-year stint as mathematics advisor for the Education Ministry in Taranaki, teaching there too. However, once he and teacher wife, Sylvia, landed in the Wakatipu in 1987 where Mel took up the Queenstown Primary School principal’s role there was no budging them. “It was such a good job that we never shifted again,” says Mel. “They were such cool people to work with. We had great school boards, support from parents, a great PTA and interesting children.” Born in Otautau in Southland, Mel’s father, grandfather and great grandfather were all teachers before him. Eldest son Nick is now fifth generation teaching at Taieri School near Dunedin.
Mel was keen to get back into mainstream education after spending four years trying to bring primary school teachers up to speed with mathematics as a Ministry advisor. “There wasn’t much depth of maths knowledge back then.” He was principal at Te Anau and Blenheim primary schools before arriving in Queenstown. Some things never change and growing pains were Mel’s greatest challenge heading the Queenstown school. “We always had such resourceful innovators on our board,” he says. “We were short of classrooms and the Ministry was really slow to do anything about it so our board said, ‘We’ll build our own!’.” In a huge community effort 50 or 60 parents volunteered for the entire May school holidays and built two new classrooms in just two weeks. “It was 1990 so things were picking up after the 1987 share market crash and we had quite a few builders back in town.” All the labour was free and the school board only had to pay for the materials. “The school mums came too and cooked lunches for the building team.” The best part was that the Ministry later bought the two new classrooms back off the board. “We were able to build a new library with the money and then had another spare classroom.”
“It was a bit of a family tradition, but my father had given up teaching to farm near Winton.” Mel was going to be a farmer, but ended up at Teacher’s College in Dunedin instead. His great grandfather, a gold miner during the late 1880s, even taught for a while at the then Macetown School.
The school grew from just over 200 kids when Mel arrived in 1987 to 500 when he retired in 2005.
A country boy at heart, Mel’s first teaching jobs were in the tiny Southland townships of Ohai and Nightcaps. Soon after, Mel and Sylvia started dating in Invercargill, marrying in late 1966. They then took up roles at a two-teacher school in Wairio, near Nightcaps.
“It was a gentle section of the river but the Ministry found out about it and I got a very stern warning letter,” he says. “That was one thing we couldn’t do, but we’d kept it safe and nobody ever drowned.”
He reckons he almost didn’t last until retirement. “I nearly got sacked in my second year at Queenstown Primary School for taking the kids rafting on the Shotover River for outdoor education, he says.
The school went on to develop an annual outdoor education week to be envied nationwide and even the littlies got to go rafting with a bonfire cook-up afterwards on the beach, he says. ‘Mr Gazzard’ became renowned with the children for his fun character ties – the first, sporting Winnie the Pooh, was a gift from American school dad Mike Stone. By the end of his career he had a collection of some 75 ties, many of them Christmas presents from children, including one that played Jingle Bells. A day in the life of a principal is never dull. A Queenstown staff member’s lip took a month to heal when a male teacher lifted one of the foyer turtles out of its tank and said, ‘Here, give it a kiss’. She got a nasty bite in return. The Queenstown Volunteer Brigade had to use the ‘jaws of life’ to free a boy whose knee got jammed in the steel cricket wickets. There was also the dilemma one Friday evening after a few staffroom quiets when four young male teachers lifted a female teacher’s Mini into the storage area under the school and parked it sideways so she couldn’t get out. Parapenters of all nationalities frequently landed in the school grounds among the playing children with most kids not batting an eyelid. However, one British parapenter, ironically believed to be an airline pilot, went too far. “A class was in the library and there was a huge thump on the roof,” says Mel. “Another landed in the gum tree bordering the neighbouring Kiwi Birdlife Park, then the board decided we would only allow accredited pilots to land on our school grounds.” In 2000 Mel did a month-long swap with an American elementary school principal in Colorado Springs where security was at the other extreme with guards manning all entrances. “She couldn’t believe how free it was here.” Poverty was rife in that area and the system was tough on young single mums, he recalls. However, despite that, while he was principal in Te Anau there was a bomb scare, evacuating every child in the school. It turned out to be a hoax after the local fire brigade had cleared every desk. Mel’s had some interesting cases marched to his office during the 25 years he’s served as principal. Five five and six-year-old Te Anau boys had to be reprimanded for peeing in a little girl’s gumboots in the boy’s urinary. After retiring from teaching Mel served for three terms as a Queenstown Lakes District councillor. He’s been president of the Wakatipu Rugby Club, Commodore of the local yacht club, still skis at 77, and was a runner for most of his life, but there’s still not much he can’t do. He feels for teachers these days, faced with so many Ministry changes and restrictions, as well as monitoring cellphone use. “Get them outside playing, or in the library, or doing something constructive,” he says.

Ngahuru seasonal produce Seasonal fruit and vegetables are the cheapest to buy, will last the longest, taste the best and are usually grown in NZ. With money tight for everyone around the country at the moment and limited shopping choices, eating seasonally is more important than ever. These are some of our tips for making the most of your Autumn produce. Pumpkins: Store a whole pumpkin in a cool place such as your garage, but don’t place them directly on the floor – use a piece of cardboard as a pumpkin mat. Stored upside-down with the stalk on the bottom, they can last up to 3 months. Broccoli: It has a short shelf-life so use it within 4-5 days of purchase. Need your broccoli to last longer? Sprinkle the head of the broccoli with water, wrap it in paper towels and place it in a sealed ziplock bag in the fridge. Be sure to make the most of your broccoli by using the stalk and the florets. Cabbage: Keep the outer leaves to wrap around the cabbage once you have started to slice through it. Make coleslaw, sauerkraut or kimchi or simply chop finely and cook with a little butter or salt. Lettuce: Store in a lettuce crisper to make them last as long as possible or wrap in a paper towel and place in a ziplock bag.

Apples: They last up to 8 times longer if stored in the fridge rather than in the fruit bowl, so if buying a bag of apples make sure you put at least half in the fridge. Kiwifruit: They don’t lend themselves to baking or freezing so buy little and often. If you have too many and they start to soften, your best bet is to add them to a smoothie or try making them into a salsa. Feijoas: If you have your own feijoa tree, you will be despairing over what to with them all. Check out the recipe here to make the most of the whole fruit by saving the feijoa skins and making delicious muffins that taste like tangy fruit lollies! Pears: The fridge is the best place to store pears for freshness and quality, then if needed ripen small batches at room temperature. Meal planning is another great way to reduce food waste and save money, our Easy Choice Family Kai Autumn budget cookbook has loads more ideas for family friendly meals using seasonal produce. As borders reopen, can New Zealand reset from high volume to ‘high values’ tourism? Author: Regina Scheyvens, Professor of Development Studies, Massey University, and Apisalome Movono, Senior Lecturer in Development Studies, Massey University, writing for The Conversation
With the reopening of New Zealand’s borders this week, the future of tourism comes into sharp relief. Flattened by the pandemic and having survived on domestic consumption for two years, the industry has a choice: try to revive the old ways, or develop a new model. If tourism minister Stuart Nash has his way, there is no going back. “Tourism won’t return to the way it was,” he told Otago University’s Tourism Policy School recently, “it will be better.” But how? The question is coming down to the various definitions of “value” – both the monetary and less tangible kinds. When Nash addressed a tourism summit in late 2020, “high value” clearly meant “high spending”. New Zealand would “unashamedly” target the wealthy – the type of tourist who “flies business class or premium economy, hires a helicopter, does a tour around Franz Josef and then eats at a high-end restaurant.” The minister also asked: “Do you think that we want to become a destination for those freedom campers and backpackers who don’t spend much and leave the high net worth individuals to other countries?” There was immediate concern that such a policy would overlook the broader value of “lower-end” tourism: backpackers and other budget tourists might not spend as much per day, but they tend to travel for longer periods, bring dollars to remoter locations, and often work in understaffed industries like horticulture and hospitality. At the same time, high-spending tourists hiring helicopters tend to place a high per-capita burden on the environment and contribute more to climate change. Clearly, what constitutes “high value” is up for debate.
From high value to high values Now, however, the minister is defining the high-value tourist differently. They give back more than they take, appreciate those working in the tourism sector, are keen to learn about the people and places they are visiting, are environmentally aware and offset their carbon emissions. This shift in thinking prompted one participant at the tourism policy school to suggest that instead of “high value” tourism, New Zealand needs to be talking about “high values” tourism. The sentiment chimed with the policy school’s theme of “structural change for regenerative tourism”, and a general feeling that this will involve looking inward to certain core values that matter to the country.
Mana and manaakitanga The implications of this approach were well articulated by Nadine ToeToe, director of Kohutapu Lodge, an award-winning tourism business in the central North Island. She proposed a new tourism model that advances manaakitanga (kindness and hospitality) to guests, while also enhancing the mana of their hosts, local communities and the surrounding environment. With her business based in the area around Murupara, which is beset by historical injustices and downturns in the forestry industry, ToeToe described the potential of tourism to move beyond simple service industry conventions. Rather, more authentic, culturally embedded experiences could be offered, based on building respectful relationships with the people and places visited. This would mean manaakitanga was reciprocal, benefiting both guests and local communities. By being designed to enhance people, community and place, tourism would necessarily break from the old volume-driven model that was putting many natural environments under significant pressure prior to the pandemic.
Time for a reset Of course, it is one thing to suggest that tourism respect the wairua (spirit) of the land, and quite another to put the legislative and regulatory frameworks around a pathway to sustainability. To a degree this is beginning to happen already. For example, following concerns about a promised crackdown on freedom camping, the minister stepped back from banning vans that weren’t self-contained. However, proposed policy changes will go to select committee this year, with new rules to be rolled out gradually from next summer. These should align with the minister’s view that “…at the heart of the new law will be greater respect for the environment and communities through a ‘right vehicle, right place’ approach” (with fines of up to NZ$1,000 for offenders). The challenge now is to broaden that vision beyond individual businesses, or pockets of concern such as freedom camping, to encompass the entire industry. Because there can be no better time than now for a valuesbased reset of New Zealand tourism.
Attendees – including industry leaders, academics, government officials and tourism business owners – supported the idea that “regenerative” in this context matches the important Māori values of kaitiakitanga, kotahitanga and manaakitanga, which should inform the future direction of tourism in Aotearoa.
