Hold onto hope

Ever had that Groundhog Day feeling? It seems we get it quite often with COVID-19. So here we are in the ‘Red Light’. Cancelling events and making alternative plans is soul destroying. Alas, one we’ve sadly become far too good at. Operators have taken yet another hit with the cancellation of the next round of major events including Warbirds Over Wānaka, the Highlanders preseason game and Challenge Wānaka. While it’s beyond frustrating I for one am grateful that for our district the spring and summer months were relatively unaffected by COVID giving folks the opportunity to relax and recharge. In other parts of the country, except for four days in Orange for Northland prior to the latest settings change, Red has been the norm for a long time. We’re learning as we go in this current arrangement and the updates on the various requirements - such as how many people can be in certain spaces, mask wearing and what to do if you think you may have COVID - seem to be very much “watch this space”.

The second reason for remaining positive again relates to the experience in New South Wales. If you track the instances of Omicron in that (rather large) community, cases went through the roof for a period of some weeks before peaking and then very quickly dropping again. If we assume that the same happens here, there’s a pretty good chance that within a couple of months we will be starting to see the effects of Omicron taper off. Finally, I’m delighted to see some great events are able to carry on having recently learned that in February QLDC will be hosting six international women’s cricket fixtures at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown. The White Ferns will be taking on India in a short-form series featuring on T20 and five one-day international fixtures. It’s great reminder that life does carry on and will return to some sort of new normal – hopefully very soon. With a very brave hope that we don’t see yet another variant come along, we might just find ourselves with a way out of the mess we’ve been in for the past two years. We desperately need it. Hold onto hope, and the resilience war chest we’ve built up in the past two years. Prepare yourselves and your families and neighbours intelligently for another stay at home and make sure you’ve had your booster and the kids have been vaccinated. Remain calm and who knows?! We might even see our Australian cousins back here for ski season 2022. Mayor Jim Boult

NZ stars in hot form for Beijing by Paul Taylor

Freeskier Nico Porteous has successfully defended his Men’s Ski SuperPipe gold medal at the 2022 Aspen X Games. The victory means Porteous and fellow Wānaka athlete Zoi SadowskiSynnott, both 20, head into the Beijing Winter Olympics as reigning X-Games and World Champions. They both won bronze in PyeongChang four years ago. “I can’t believe it, another one, like what?! I am genuinely speechless,” he said after winning in Aspen. Porteous left it until his fourth and final run to land what the commentators described as the most technical halfpipe run ever landed in competition. He dropped in switch starting with a switch right 900, into a newly learnt switch left double 1440, then into his trademark back-to-back double 1620s before finishing off with a huge left alley oop double 900. “It still hasn’t sunk in; I was the last to drop so it happened so fast. To piece all that together in arguably the most high-pressure moment of my skiing career, I can’t believe it!” His older brother Miguel Porteous, 22, finished in 7th place at his fourth X Games appearance and Wānaka local Ben Harrington, 20, dropped into his debut X Games, finishing in a credible 8th place. They’re all on the New Zealand team, which features nine men and six women, who will compete in up to 72 competition sessions across the 15 days of Winter Olympic competition. Beijing 2022 kicks off this Friday, February 4. (The opening ceremony is 12.30am, Saturday, Feb 5, NZ time). NZ athletes began arriving in China on Sunday. Seven are first time Olympians, with the others all returning from PyeongChang 2018. The youngest member of the team is 16-year-old freeski halfpipe athlete Gustav Legnavsky, also of Wānaka, who is one of four teenagers in the team. The oldest team member is 32-year-old Wellington ice speedskater Peter Michael. The Games are being contested across three villages, with Beijing hosting ice sports and big air, Yanqing hosting alpine and sliding, and Zhangjiakou hosting park, pipe, cross country and biathlon.

New Zealand Team Chef de Mission Marty Toomey says the athletes have “demonstrated a huge amount of skill and determination” to be selected and qualify during the pandemic. . Toomey, who is also chief executive of Winter Games NZ, says the team comes into Beijing in amazing form and has potential across the board. “We saw the amazing impact the Winter Olympic Games can have on our nation when Nico and Zoi won our first medals in 26-years at the last edition of the Games. “We’re looking forward to again creating history and giving New Zealanders a reason to celebrate over the next few weeks.” The Games will be operating under stringent Covid-19 protocols, with daily testing, social distancing, temperature checks, and a closed loop bubble system in place to limit any spread of Covid-19. It’s also being held on artificial snow - more than 1.2 million cubic tons of the white stuff.

Bracing for the worst but hoping for the best by Sue Fea

Serious labour shortages, especially for highly skilled roles, and anticipated supply chain issues are already putting pressure on some Queenstown businesses, with construction and hospitality among the hardest hit. It’s unknown whether local businesses will be as badly affected with supply shortages as Australia with staff there having been home recovering from Omicron, or having to self-isolate as close contacts. However, businesses are bracing themselves and trying to mitigate any effects well in advance, just in case. Arrowtown builder Allister Saville says builders need to be organised well in advance with delays in materials likely to get worse, and to ensure they have safe, secure storage on site. Costs have skyrocketed, almost trebled, for large storage containers – up from about $3000 to $7000 as builders scramble to lock away what are now precious materials. He understands there’s been an increase in materials being taken from building sites in the wake of the increased value and demand. “We’re very blasé in this area and we need to sharpen up a bit. A lot of sites are left unfenced and many people don’t use security cameras,” he says. There’s huge demand for builders and with supply delays and higher costs being incurred builders should be including a special Covid clause in contracts to protect themselves from material delay or cost rise,” says Allister. A global building boom and the lure of more money in Australia means building companies have to work harder to retain staff. Wages in Dunedin and Invercargill have risen to attract staff to those regions where they’re busy too, says Allister. Wage costs have risen due to extra compliance in a Covid world too. Naylor Love regional director Greg Boland says it’s frustrating that so many large commercial projects locally are being affected because the government won’t allow highly-skilled staff in from overseas to fill roles. “Demand is huge and the pool of people hasn’t grown. We need project managers, engineers, quantity surveyors, designers.” Some existing overseas staff on work visas have left after two to three years apart from their families because the government wouldn’t grant their families visas, says Greg. “We’ve lobbied them multiple times, but they believe it’s possible to train people already in New Zealand. It’s impossible to train someone to 20 years’ experience in such a short time,” he says. “Clients will face delays if the government doesn’t let these people in.” It’s challenging retaining apprentices with about half not following through, however, Greg says the ones they do have are fully committed, show initiative and they get rewarded for that. While nobody’s commenting, it’s believed that in the construction industry some wage costs may have increased from the early to mid-30s an hour to the mid to late 30s, even breaching into more than $40 an hour.

Some companies are quite concerned with no wage subsidy now too. Various tactics are believed to have been employed to try and entice candidates, such as higher pay rates, vouchers and bonus offers, but it appears for many these are still attracting very few responses. It’s believed any workers arriving in town can have the pick of the crop, and those with skills and experience are able to command a good hourly rate. Tradestaff Queenstown team leader Caz Mackenzie says the labour market is extremely tight. “I have a large number of clients who I would like to help, but I have to disappoint them on a daily basis, predominantly in construction and hospitality,” she says. “Just about every industry in town has been contacting us since just before Christmas.” Tradestaff has branches around the country, but Caz says Queenstown is suffering more than most with the loss of its transient workforce. “Our regular candidate pool numbers are down by 25 percent in Queenstown compared with a year ago, but our new recruit candidates are much worse, down 75 percent on last year,” she says. Countdown Queenstown and Wanaka Metro manager Jason McQuoid says their national teams are working hard to mitigate any effects if supply chain delays occur. “We’re building up stock levels and holding more in store already,” he says. “There was a big splurge of shoppers after the country shifted to Red (January 24), but we expect the stock levels would have returned to normal in a few days.” Jason was looking for 30 staff the week before last (week ends Jan 21), but thankfully he found 12 last week. “A few people move on in January but there are certainly more this year,” he says. Foodstuffs NZ corporate affairs manager Emma Wooster says it’s essential people shop normally, mask up, keep one metre physical distances and be kind. Teams have been actively preparing for Omicron and building stock

Council prepared for Omicron Queenstown council boss Mike Theelen says plans are in place to operate essential services through an Omicron outbreak. Since the start of the global pandemic, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has been operating a business continuity planning team, focused on how it can ensure it is still able to meet the needs of local communities. And, as such, the move to the red COVID Protection Framework setting was being planned for well ahead of the summer break. “Council needs to keep providing essential services to the community,” Theelen says. “These include collecting and processing recycling and waste, maintaining water supply and wastewater infrastructure, responding to wandering dogs, repairing local roads, processing resource and building consent applications, and much more. “There’s also maintaining and operating our district’s network of community facilities like parks and playgrounds, sport and recreation facilities, libraries and community venues.” Theelen says a significant outbreak could mean there aren’t enough staff to maintain usual levels of service.

So, it has moved to an operating model which sees a maximum office capacity limited to ensure physical distancing and reduce the risk of the workplace becoming a ‘super spreader’ environment. Many teams are also working in bubbles. “The goal here is to make sure we always have staff available to deliver the services needed by locals,” Theelen says. Despite this planning and change in working models, locals should be prepared for possible temporary facilities closures or reduced levels of service. “COVID modellers are currently predicting rapid growth in case numbers, with daily cases in the thousands within weeks. “So, there is a possibility that due to similar staff shortages through illness or the need to isolate we may need to temporarily close a gym or a library, limit our reception desks at Council offices, or pause some services. “However, the Council’s priority will be on maintaining the critical lifeline services and working closely with our contractors to ensure we can keep delivering these at all times.” Any changes to availability of facilities and levels of services will be notified should they be necessary.

Long Covid for tourist numbers by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Airport boss Glen Sowry is forecasting a slow recovery from Covid-19 for Queenstown Lakes tourism industry.

Sowry, who replaced Colin Keel in September last year, believes it could be years before the district welcomes the high numbers of international tourists seen here pre-pandemic. As such, the airport should be able to work within its existing noise boundaries for the next decade at least. Sowry says long-haul airlines are already making decisions about next summer’s schedule. “And at the moment New Zealand is shut, so they are deploying those assets elsewhere, to earn an economic return from them.” He says there’s a risk the longer NZ’s borders remain shut to nonquarantine travel, the more difficult it will be to attract long haul carriers again to NZ’s hub airports of Auckland and Christchurch. “They will return, but to what scale and how quickly, when those assets have been redeployed on to competing routes, that’s an issue for New Zealand generally, not just for tourism, but for cargo and trade. “It’s not going to come back in a big rush.” Short-haul, particularly across the Tasman into Queenstown, is likely to recover much quicker, but whether the borders will be open for the 2022 winter season is anyone’s guess. Sowry also questions whether there will be the same appetite for long haul tourism when the world reopens, both as a result of the pandemic and the increasing focus on carbon consumption. Queenstown Airport Corporation is working on its 10-year masterplan, which should be presented to majority shareholder Queenstown Lakes District Council (75.01%) in the coming months. It will include plans for ‘Lot 6’, the parcel of land bought for $18.4 million from Remarkables Park Limited under a compulsory purchase order. That was originally earmarked to provide for the expansion of the airport to meet the projected growth, but Sowry wouldn’t be drawn on whether those plans have changed. The controversial bid to expand its noise boundaries, is off the table for now, however. The push for growth, stymied by Queenstown noise boundaries, led new Auckland Airport boss Carrie Hurihanganui to call for an alternative airport for Central Otago, back when she was Air New Zealand’s chief ground operations officer in 2018. That, in turn, prompted Christchurch International Airport Ltd to spend $45 million to buy 750 ha of land last year near Tarras last year, according to FlightPlan2050 member John Hilhorst, writing in the NBR two weeks ago. Auckland Airport is the minority shareholder (24.99%) in Queenstown Airport Corporation and Hillhorst asks whether Hurihanganui will now advocate for Tarras. That would enable Queenstown Airport shut down and the land used for an alpine village, as FlightPlan2050 is itself advocating. Sowry says a lot has changed since 2018, but as Queenstown Airport is a community-owned asset, if that’s what the majority of the community wants, they can push for it through Queenstown Lakes District Council. “My personal view, which will come as no surprise, is the convenience and proximity of Queenstown Airport for both the people who live here who travel out for business or family, and for inbound tourists . . . is of enormous value.” It will also help QLDC in its push to attract new business leaders, with the rise of remote working, helping to diversify the economy away from tourism. He can’t see the logic behind a new airport at Tarras, especially when the carbon cost of building it is taken into account, and driving more than an hour to and from it. “There’s also absolutely insufficient catchment in the Southern Lakes region to support long haul travel, so that means you’d be virtually exclusively reliant on inbound tourism, and then that’s a question for the community, is that what they want.”

Arts+Culture New artist-run gallery to open in Arrowtown by Bethany Rogers

A new artist-run gallery opens in Arrowtown this week (2nd February), showcasing the work of Eric Nauta. Eric specialises in both realistic landscape paintings and large-scale abstract paintings. Born in Argentina and brought up in New Zealand from the age of five, Eric says his work is marked by hybrid cultural influences. “I’m very South American, I speak Spanish and I express myself in a way that my Argentinian family does. However, I was raised in New Zealand and I’m as Kiwi as anyone else. In a way, my work highlights that part of New Zealand culture that we are a hybridization of many different cultures and styles, which makes this whole unique thing.” It’s not just a coming together of cultures that have influenced Eric’s work, he’s also experimented with bringing together two very different artistic styles: photo-realism and abstract. “I started out specialising in realism, then, about 10 years ago, I discovered a painting technique that evokes this whole other experience that can’t be achieved in photo-realism. After spending time mastering large-scale abstract pieces, over the past few years I’ve begun to combine the two.” Hyper-real landscapes sit, like a window into a different world, amid large-scale, expressive abstract paintings. Eric has spent the last few years painting in a studio in Queenstown, but has long-held a bigger vision to open up a gallery. The opportunity came about when the perfect space opened up in Arrowtown, at 21 Ramshaw Lane. Eric had managed to get the finance to open the gallery, and he’d spent years working on a cohesive body of work to showcase. “I’ve been largely inspired by local legends like Ivan Clarke and Tim Wilson. That’s what I’m hoping to do with my gallery. My experience of being in town over the past ten years is that when people visit town we’ve got to show them what’s on offer, especially culturally […] so I’m looking to offer and contribute to that culture too, something that the Queenstown community can claim as their own.” Eric says his intention for the gallery is to be something different. He doesn’t want to bring a big city-style gallery to Arrowtown – the gallery will be focussed on an intimate art (and artist) led experience.

“It’ll be an artist-run gallery, not unlike the way Tim Wilson’s gallery in town was like. […] I’ve made the distinction between this and a studio gallery because I see value in separating the studio. It’s a whole different experience. The studio is always a bomb site with paint and dust from the creative whirlwind, whereas the gallery will be looking clean, pristine – a space that’s always presentable and immaculate.” Eric will be at the gallery, ready to greet visitors and answer questions from the 2nd February opening day. Due to the move to Red in the Traffic Light Covid-19 response, the gallery’s opening day will be spread from 2 pm – 2 am on 2nd February with a cap of 25 visitors at any one time. Entry is free and there’ll be light refreshments.

Drivers not getting the message

A traffic cop caught 23 drivers using their mobile phones in less than eight hours on Gorge Road, Queenstown, last week. Road Policing Manager, Senior Sergeant Sarah Thorn, says the officer was parked in a marked patrol car and was easy to spot.

“Using a mobile phone that is not hands-free means you are not paying attention. You’re placing yourself, anyone else in your vehicle and all other road users at risk.” The officer also caught two drivers speeding and issued tickets to four people who were not wearing seatbelts. The fine for using a mobile phone while driving, or not wearing a seat belt, is $150. In 2020, distraction was a factor in 23 deaths and 125 serious injuries on New Zealand roads. They include Queenstown teenager Allanah Walker, 17, who was killed instantly in a head-on crash near Arrowtown in August 2020, which also seriously injured her boyfriend Astin Caldwell. Tully Robinson, 22, was convicted aggravated careless driving causing death and injury late last year over the fatal crash. She admitted she was messaging on her phone, speeding, affected by alcohol, and on the wrong side of the road. NZ Police have also, separately, issued a plea encouraging parents to sit down with their children and talk to them about being safe around roads, as they head back to school - even the teenagers. Superintendent Steve Greally, Director National Road Policing Centre, warns young children can be excitable and distracted, while teenagers are prone to having their heads down in a phone, wearing earphones. “It is important to remind children, and to remember ourselves as adults, that any time we cross a road we must stop, look, and listen for any cars, motorbikes, or cyclists before stepping out. “If you’re wearing earphones, take them out or mute them for a minute and if you’re talking on the phone pause the conversation so that you can cross safely. “The person you’re talking with will understand.” Parents should also watch their speed around schools and be extra alert in case a child runs out in front of them without warning, especially from behind parked cars. “Children can make mistakes, so always be aware.” They should stay below the 30km/h speed limit for passing schools and below 20km/h speed limit when passing school buses.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Thanks to all the local bastards (and parents of said bastards) for your enthusiastic support of bastard births - I love getting feedback from readers. I’ve just returned from life with no news, phone calls, internet we flew into Fiordland for a lot of fishing and a bit of nonsense and ended up having loads of nonsense and a bit of fishing. We stayed on the Pembroke - a 1960s steel boat - it means living in very close quarters but it’s terrific fun. We celebrated Nicoll Thomson’s birthday and had brought in 60’s dressups. Had there been another soul anywhere near, they’d have thought we were a real ship of fools. There’s a saying about throwing out visitors and fish after three days, but we managed the full four days without a single murder (let’s not mention the fish). Utter bliss with dolphins cavorting, seals barking and basking, sharks circling, and a weird stalking seagull called Stephen who perched on the rail outside spying on us every day. The only access is a 7-day tramp or a 40-minute flight. I hadn’t been in a helicopter for a long time and had forgotten how thrilling it is. I was a vile child, and my mother would often beg my helicopter pilot father or his workmates to “take her away” and I was always keen to go. I escaped boring jobs at home and at that age, I loved being with the pilots who did naughty, dangerous (and probably illegal these days) swoopings and chasings with no doors on the machines. It makes my blood run cold even thinking about it now that I am old and wimpy and keen to avoid accidents. I’m especially keen to avoid going anywhere near hospital presently as they are being so strict. My lovely friend Nicky Martin is in there after a bike accident and only one visitor at a time is allowed. When my 90-year-old father fell and needed attention at A and E (he does LOVE those nurses!) my daughter wasn’t allowed in as she’d been in MIQ within 14 days. Luckily the fabulous Caroline Abbiss had driven them to hospital and she was deemed safe enough to take him in. If you’re a fan of danger (minus the sore bits), reading about it is SO good. On the boat, in between eating and making merry, I managed to devour, NEVER by Ken Follett - it’s about WW3 and how wars start by accident. An enormous doorstop of a book and the greatest danger is not being able to put it down. Then I got stuck into THE LAST EXPLORER by Simon Nasht. Hubert Wilkins was an extraordinary hero who won bravery medals as a photographer in WW1 and realised how important it was for the world to learn how to read the weather. He was a very early pilot and submariner and explored both North and South poles. Somehow, he avoided dying in the battlefields, dodgy early planes and submarines and was enormously humble. I’m nearly at the end and I’m going to miss this fearless, very lucky lunatic genius. Everyone knows how chaotic the shipping is all over the world, and friends had been nagging for ages for me to bring back some more wooden Rummikub sets from Turkey. I finally gave in and ordered 100 sets in August saying they were to be sent to Port Chalmers. It took months before they finally told me they’d found a space on a ship - going to AUCKLAND. Grrr… anyway, the night before we left for Fiordland, the shipment finally arrived, so I started trying to sort them all out in their unmarked boxes. For extra fun, there was a power cut for 3 1/2 hours. I won’t be doing it again!!

NASA reports the James Webb Space Telescope successfully arrived at its orbital destination, 1.5 million km away from Earth last Monday The most powerful observatory ever to launch to space, the James Webb Space Telescope lifted off on Dec. 25, 2021 to explore the cosmos and our universe’s earliest milestones. Since its successful takeoff, the $10 billion telescope has been busy deploying its various systems and structures and traveling over 1.5 million kilometers to its new home: L2, the location is known as the second sun-Earth Lagrange point—a spot where both the Earth’s and sun’s gravity combine with the centrifugal force of orbiting to provide the telescope a stable trajectory Webb has spent the past 30 days slowly and carefully unfolding its sunshield and other vital parts. The overall deployment process has been anxiety-inducing, for it includes hundreds of potential single-point failures that could each spell disaster for Webb and its arrival in orbit around L2 is another huge milestone to check off. Once orbiting L2, Webb will begin cooling down and turning on its four scientific instruments. It will take weeks still for this cooling to be completed and for Webb to reach a stable temperature. Following this cool down, Webb will spend about five months perfectly aligning and calibrating its optics and scientific instruments. Webb will spend its lifetime at L2 and once settled into the position it will peer across the universe. Space.com

• 1 bunch broccoli, cut into florets (6 cups) • ¼ cup pitted kalamata olives, chopped • 1 orange, segmented, plus 1 tablespoon finely grated zest • 2 tablespoons olive oil • kosher salt and black pepper

Instructions

1. Fill a large saucepan with 3cm of water and fit with a steamer. Bring the water to a boil. Place the broccoli in the steamer, cover, and steam until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Rinse immediately with cold water to cool. 2. In a large bowl, toss the broccoli with the olives, orange segments and zest, oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper.

Raw Beetroot salad

A delicious zesty salad, with the most insanely good orange balsamic dressing.

Ingredients

• 4 beetroot 500g • 4 carrots 400g • 1 red onion 100g • 1/2 c raisins • 1/4 c sunflower seeds • 1/4 c pumpkin seeds • 1 c mint leaves Orange Balsamic Dressing: • 1 orange peel removed • 5 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tbsp chia seed oil • 1/4 tsp sea salt • 1 drop wild orange essential oil • Cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Wash and scrub the beetroot and carrots, and slice off any rough bits. You don't need to peel them, especially if they're organic, as a lot of nutrients are in fact in the skin. Cut them into match-sticks by slicing them thinly (do the carrots on a diagonal), then grab a bunch of slices and lay them flat and chop into match sticks. Or use a food processor with a grating attachment or chopping function. 2. Thinly slice the red onions and mix together with the remaining ingredients, reserving a few mint leaves, seeds and raisins to sprinkle on top. If you’re using dried and activated seeds they’ll be crunchy already so add as is, otherwise pop your seeds in a pan on low heat for 5 minutes, shaking regularly until they just start to go brown and aromatic. 3. Blend the dressing ingredients in a blender until smooth, then mix through the salad. 4. Sprinkle with reserved mint, seeds and raisins and serve!

A Central Otago cherry producer is implementing innovative management technologies this season to benefit orchard workers Tarras Cherry Corp is using New Zealand-developed orchard management technologies to ensure workers are paid for the exact kilograms of cherries they harvest. The technology, which uses radio-frequency identification, was developed by Auckland based software company, Dataphyll. Orchard and project manager Ross Kirk said at a time when pickers were in short supply, investing in smart technologies was a way to attract and retain quality workers. “We want to lead the charge as an innovative and progressive operation throughout the supply chain.” He said the software provides an absolute volume of harvested fruit through scanning and weighing. The volume is then linked to the picker. “Pickers know in real-time how much they have picked and how much they will earn,” he said.

Mr Kirk said as workers were paid per kilogram, there was an incentive to fill buckets. “A smart picker can earn well because the more they pick, the more they get paid and it pinpoints top performers who pick above the minimum and may be eligible for bonuses.” He said workers can keep track of their earnings via an app on their phone. The technology also meant there was no risk of pickers being paid for fruit someone else harvested. Mr Kirk said traceability would be the immediate benefit this season.

“Over time, long-term data collection will allow orchard mapping to determine harvest volumes and ease control of fruit flow to the packhouse.” Dataphyll chief executive officer and co-founder Christoph Kistler said the technology was developed to pay pickers for performance, not attendance. “It tracks workers and buckets via ID tags, which interface with mobile devices and weigh stations in the orchard.” Mr Kistler said the software, developed initially for the berry industry in 2015, had been extended to meet Tarras Cherry Corp’s needs. The concept means the weight of harvested cherries is captured via a unique identifier on the bucket. There were also other benefits, he said. “Orchardists can review performance and production in real-time, highlight best performing workers, rowlevel yields and understand reject rates,” Mr Kistler said.

Draft QLDC Tree Policy 2022

If you travelling between Cromwell and Queenstown on SH6 over the next few weeks, you will need to build in potential for short delays at Nevis Bluff (up to ten minutes on weekdays) in the coming weeks.

Council has created a draft Tree Policy to provide guidance on planting, maintenance, potential removals and how staff and contractors will work around trees in the Queenstown Lakes.

Monitoring of the rock face has identifies an increase in movement of one large rock mass. Robert Choveaux, Senior Network Manager, Central Otago for Waka Kotahi, says

“Further movement and fresh cracking have now been observed, and we are mobilising our team to intervene to stabilise the rock and try to prevent an uncontrolled collapse.

Feedback on the policy closes on Sunday 20 February at 5.00pm.

Work started last week and crews are currently preparing the site before drilling starts. The physical properties of the schist rock at Nevis Bluff make it susceptible to ongoing weathering through winter freeze/thaw conditions and drying out due to hot and windy conditions, says Mr Choveaux. “Rain also reacts with the minerals in the schist, weakening it further. When added with the angle at which the feature sits on the rock face – these all undermine its structural integrity,” Mr Choveaux adds.

Beach Street Upgrades starts again

Drone survey graphic showing location of the works, 160m above State Highway 6. “The work will involve stabilising the rock mass with just under 100 rock bolts as the rock mass is quite large and would be significantly disruptive to road users to remove through blasting, using explosives,” says Mr Choveaux. “The majority of the work can be completed with the road remaining open to two lanes with minimal disruption to road users, but there will need to be closures as abseilers and drilling gear is set up and moved around the rock face.” The work is expected to take 16 weeks to complete, subject to rock and weather conditions. People travelling between Cromwell and Queenstown, State Highway 6, will need to factor in short delays, up to 10 minutes at a time on weekdays between 8am and 5pm.

Lower Beach Street will see the ground preparation crew recommence from this week for concrete pours planned on Monday 14 February and Monday 21 February. The paving crew recommenced work outside Aotea Gifts last Thursday. Another crew will also be onsite from Monday 31 January until Monday 21 February to excavate the six remaining light pole foundations. Upper Beach Street we will see preparation of the foundations for eleven new light poles. All pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained during these works.

‘Kath’s next act’

For 36 years she’s graced the Wakatipu with her musical and teaching talents, her effervescence and dancing blue eyes, but this week a longtime star of the Queenstown stage has sung her final local swan song. Kath Brentwood, who’s delivered several lead roles in Showbiz Queenstown musicals, previously Queenstown Music and Operatic Society, bids farewell to her beloved Arrowtown, headed for a new semi-retired life in Christchurch. A highly regarded local teacher since arriving here with her late husband Pete Brentwood in 1985, Kath with her trademark deliciously auburn hair, was born in the small Scottish village of Netherburn where her dad was a coal miner. In 1960, at almost five, she and her parents moved to New Zealand to join her mother’s family in New Brighton, Christchurch, where Kath grew up. It was here that her much-loved uncle, Tommy Kahi, an accomplished musician and guitar teacher, instilled a real passion for music in her. “He was just fantastic,” recalls Kath, whose father was also a beautiful singer. She attended Mary Immaculate Covenant School in New Brighton, before St Mary’s College in the city. “Sometimes I’d battle on my bike in those hot northwesters.” Christchurch Teacher’s College holidays were spent earning in a local jeweller’s shop, but one August holidays Kath and her bestie, Jude, took a roadie to Queenstown. They took a horse-trek and decided to treat themselves to dinner at Treetops Restaurant - an iconic Queenstown restaurant set high in the gum trees at Sunshine Bay. A quiet, unassuming Aussie bloke from Melbourne, Pete Brentwood, was there on a ski trip with his mates. “They were heading to Mount Cook so we hopped in Jude’s little blue VW and went too,” says Kath. After a year of writing letters Pete came to Christchurch, before Kath moved to Melbourne for three and a half years where she taught in schools. The mountains drew Pete back to Queenstown. They bought their first home in Fernhill in 1985. “We had a couple of stretchers, enough wood to light the fire and a jug to make a cup of tea,” says Kath. “We went to The Cow and had Her Majesty’s pizza and a bottle of red wine to toast the home that will now have a multi-million dollar view.” They married in Christchurch six months later. A phone call to St Joseph’s Church to check mass times for her dad landed Kath a job with Sister Marie Eugene at St Joseph’s School where she taught for 15 years. Pete, a skilled skier, worked the skifields and was part of the opening day team at The Remarkables Ski Area, before returning to his trade of electronics. Daughter Isla arrived in 1986 and son Finley in 1990. Both are now professional singers in Melbourne, performing recently at the Australian Open. Isla and Finley also reached the final six in X-Factor Australia in 2016. There were major challenges to overcome in 1991 when Pete suffered a stroke, right as they’d been negotiating a piece of rural land at Lower Shotover. Thankfully that purchase went ahead. Right from day one Kath, a life member and longtime committee member of Showbiz Queenstown, has been lining up for musicals.

Her first was South Pacific staged in then Albert’s Nightclub. “I was Bloody Mary.” Her favourite roles were Sally Bowles in Cabaret, for which she won the Alan Cheak Award, and Madame Thenardier in Les Misérables. A photo of Kath and Marty Newell performing in Les Mis is one of her favourites. “We started out doing conferences in the early days – little medley performances at hotel conferences. My first committee meeting was in Bev and Brian Rooney’s caravan in the Frankton Caravan Park.” The year they did Jesus Christ Superstar a massive storm caused a power outage leaving the entire Memorial Hall blacked out during the market sellers’ scene. “It blew the transformer. The live band stopped and all we had was the drummer playing,” she laughs. Her funniest memory was of a cast member hitting her head from behind as the cast lined up to enter the stage during Hair. “I had so much lacquer in my hair and it was all buffed up. “One of the props was a live flame and my hair started sparking.” “We had so much fun. It was hard work, hard graft, but we became like a real family. There was, and still is, such joy in bringing stories alive for audiences,” she says. Kath began teaching at Arrowtown School in 2001 where she’s taught for 21 years, leading children’s choirs and Kapa Haka groups. Circumstances changed for the family and Kath moved to Arrowtown in 2007. Tragically, Pete passed away in 2011. “Arrowtown became very special to me. It’s always where my heart will be. I love the beauty of Queenstown, but I have a strong bond with Arrowtown,” she says. For me it’s been an honour and a privilege to live in this part of the world. “Pete and I created a life for ourselves. It was hard work but there was a sense that we were building a community around us and, as a family, that’s helped us through various difficult times.” “Beneath the hype here there’s a strong community of people who keep you going,” she says. “There are so many memories.” “Thank you to all the people who’ve been part of my journey.”

The hits kept coming for Queenstown Lakes events industry last week. Covid-19 red light settings, introduced to slow the spread of the Omicron variant, caused a host of high-profile festivals, gigs, races, sports games and community events to cancel or postpone. Queenstown Bike Festival was set to feature 15 events across nine days from 4 February, including McGazza Fest on the first weekend. It would have been the first time the festival has run since 2014, but it has had to be postponed. Organiser Emmerson Wilken says it has taken about a year to plan for the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club event, including the necessary paperwork, working out a schedule, sorting locations, and writing up Covid response plans. “It’s absolutely gutting. Countless hours have gone into this, I don’t even want to think about the number of hours to be honest,” he says. “There were ways we could have gone ahead, limiting the number of spectators, changing events, but that would have meant more volunteers on crowd control, fences, things like that.”

Under code ‘red’ public events are limited to a maximum of 100 persons within a defined area, even outdoors. “At the end of the day, we decided what’s the point of holding a community event without the community.” Some of the bike festival’s events will go ahead as stand-alone events, including The National Downhill Championships, at Coronet Peak. The festival itself could be moved to Easter, Covid-permitting. Read more on the Queenstown App. Charity music festival King Beats, set for 19 February in Kingston, has cancelled for 2022, while the Arrow Sounds music festival (11-13 Feb), Beer & BBQ Summit at Coronet Peak (19 Feb) and the Waitangi Day community event and Reggae in the Park, (6 Feb), are also off. Gibbston Valley Winery summer concert (Mar 26) organisers made the call to cancel before the red settings, due to difficulties getting musicians through the border. Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow (15-17 April), which attracts some 55,000 people over three days and injects more than $40 million into the Southern Lakes regional economy, was one of the first to pull pin last week. WOW Community Trust board chairman John Gilks said it is a “huge blow” for everyone involved, especially as the biennial airshow cancelled in 2020 due to Covid, but the health and safety of the team and visitors is paramount. “It is also going to be upsetting for the thousands of people who have already bought tickets and were looking forward to the enjoyment our event brings so many,” Gilks said. Ticket holders will be offered a full refund. The Motatapu (Mar 5), Queenstown Marathon (Mar 19) and NZ Golf Open (Mar 31) are still working through options, but several sports events have already made the call. Triathlon festival Challenge Wanaka (15-17 Feb) is cancelled, as is the Shotover Moonlight Marathon (Feb 19) and the Highlanders v Moana Pasifika pre-season rugby game (Feb 11).

The lemon squeeze has been felt by everyone this summer, the guacamole tastes a bit bland when there’s no lemons juice mixed in to give it zing! I was astonished to learn that the bulk of New Zealand’s lemon crop is harvested between March and June. Comments from a Countdown spokesperson said that ‘lemons are a winter stock’ and they import lemons from the US over February, March & April when our lemons are fully out of season. So, the problem is our local lemon supply has run dry and our imported stock is held up. Lemons are just a long list of products that are missing from the shelves. Jalapenos were MIA in December. Much of our global imports are hitting blockades as shipments need clearance at every port due to the global pandemic that keeps lingering round like a bad smell. The supermarkets have provided us with a false reality that products are available year-round, it’s just not true nor is it natural. We need to make do with what we grow seasonally or attempt to grow our own lemon trees. To leave a further sour taste I don’t think our fresh lemon supply will be stocked up anytime soon. Alternative suggestions. Preserved lemons? Are they still on the shelves? I want to suggest to go for the yellow / green bottles lemon or lime juice in your baking isle but I fear this is no secret and may also have been snapped up.
