Riding rings around each other this February
Jandals and sticky tar days. Sunburn. Fresh apricots, short shorts. Cold beers and good beats. This is a kiwi summer. NIWA told us to expect a hot one, and it sure has been so far. A lot of summer still stretches before us, and Lightfoot want to ask you to do something radical. Every February the Aotearoa Bike Challenge puts out a call to cyclists across the country to put on their lycra and get on their bikes. It’s an easy thing for cyclists to do, or so they tell us. Enrol online, grab your bike and log a few rides. Reduce a bit of C02, save a few bucks, get fitter. Around 85,000 Kiwis have pedalled 81 million kms in the last few years. They’re not riding for charity. They’re not riding for reward. They’re just riding coz they want to for a whole bunch of reasons. They “ride because it’s a challenge” (Tim – Wellington). But those people don’t live in Queenstown. We live in a place that provides excuses not reasons. It’s actually just too hard to bike here. It’s a hilly town, with terrible summer weather where it rains all the time and barely any of us own bikes. There’s no trails and it is blatantly unsafe to ride bikes in most of Queenstown’s suburbs. And as for biking in Frankton or Queenstown where the speed limit for cars is a death-inciting 40km/h – absolutely friggin’ not. No covered, secure central city bike parking or the ability to transport your bike on the bus to cut your trip in half. Does that sound right? Hmmm. So, let’s start again because you probably do own a bike. This epic summer weather has never been better and Queenstown is actually a pretty safe place to bike with awesome trails and wide streets. Why not rise to the challenge by registering your workplace to participate in the ABC this February? You don’t need to wear lycra and you don’t need to do every trip by bike. How about just putting on ‘some’ pants and doing a ‘few’ trips? Around 400 Queenstowners ride in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge annually. This year we’d like to see 2022 of you rolling. Big rides or short ones. Big people and small ones. To work, or for fun. Ride for your workplace (why not challenge the business next door?) but mostly we want you to ride with us. Search for The Lightfoot Initiative in ‘My Clubs and Groups’ and start rolling. It’s as easy as doing your ABCs. It’s cold, I’m wet, it’s too steep. No it isn’t. Find your reason to ride and get on ‘ya bike. Enrol now Aotearoa.bike Amanda Robinson – Lightfoot Initiative

Limbo for summer events by Paul Taylor
Major events in the region are hanging in the balance after the country moved into the red light setting. Queenstown Marathon, the Motatapu, the New Zealand Open, Moonlight Marathon, Queenstown Bike Festival and Ripe are all scheduled to take place over the coming weeks and months. Warbirds over Wanaka was cancelled first thing Monday and is one of New Zealand’s major events, attracting 55,000 to the region. But planning has been thrown into disarray after Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced the move to red on Sunday, due to the threat of the supertransmissible Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the community. Red limits the number of people within a defined space to 100, even outdoors, ruling out mass starts, crowds of spectators and large corporate sponsorship hospitality events. As the Lakes Weekly Bulletin went to press, organisers of the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon said no decision had been made on whether it would be cancelled. It has already been postponed from 20 November and was due to run on 19 March. “At this stage, we’re just working through the different scenarios and when we have more information we’ll put that out,” Ruth Bowerman, media executive for Queenstown Marathon owner IRONMAN Oceania, said. Ardern, asked how long the country would remain in the Red, would only say it would be “for some weeks”. Omicron has moved rapidly through other countries around the world, placing strain on health services and supply chains. But in the UK, which reported its first Omicron cases on November 27, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Government believes the peak number of daily cases has already been reached. Last week, it removed all Covid-19 restrictions, including mandatory masks, Covid passports to enter nightclubs and large events, and limits on the numbers of people at events. Whether that will happen in NZ in time for Queenstown summer events to go ahead is anyone’s guess. Co-owner of the Macpac Motatapu Craig Gallagher says his team is also reviewing what the red setting means for the 4000-participant event, scheduled for 5 March. It was cancelled last year after Auckland moved into a level three lockdown, and the rest of the country moved to level two.
“We’ve decided to pause entries while we assess and see if Wednesday’s update might give further light on how Macpac Motatapu might run in March,” he says. “For us who own the events, but were cut out from the Government’s insurance eligibility, we’re left to weigh how far we push on versus the major financial risk to us and our athletes.” If the Motatapu goes ahead, it will include a new 56km Coronet Peak Loop mountain bike race (see page 25). The Gibbston Valley Concert, due to be held on March 26, has already cancelled earlier this month, as musicians from overseas were not keen on MIQ isolation. That could also prove the undoing of the New Zealand Golf Open, which is due to take place at Millbrook Resort, Arrowtown, from 31 March to 3 April, rescheduled from 24-27 February. “Our immediate issue is what we can and can’t do with regards to people coming through the border and isolation,” tournament director Michael Glading says. “We’ve put our thoughts and questions in writing to Government and they have promised us an answer by mid-to-late [this] week. “We’ll then work through the logistics of ‘if you can operate in red, how do you do it’. So, it’s more questions than answers I’m afraid.” Neither the Queenstown Bike Festival nor the Moonlight Marathon organisers answered our phone calls on Sunday, before the LWB went to press. The red setting will also cause issues for conference and incentive events, business and community gatherings, weddings and other functions. Up to 100 people can be inside an indoor venue for events, but the capacity is restricted by the number it can accommodate while maintaining onemetre social distancing between them. Deputy Prime Minister Grant Roberston, at Sunday’s press conference, said the red light setting is the best way to minimise the impact of Omicron “and get back going as quickly as we can”. “It’s been tough over the last few years for people who organise events, but I know that they themselves have been planning for this,” Robertson said. “We’re going to work together to make sure we can get back to having those festivals as soon as we can.”

Progress on glass recycling by Paul Taylor
Glass collected for recycling in Queenstown Lakes has a contamination rate of just 0.35%, an internal council audit has found. QLDC Waste Minimisation project officer Kath Buttar says this represents 515kg of the total sample of 145,730kg collected glass that was checked. Back in May 2016, it was revealed that all of Queenstown’s glass ‘recycling’ was in fact going to landfill, partially due to high levels of contamination. But since then there has been a complete overhaul of the waste system in the district, with a new three bin system introduced to separate glass, recyclables such as cardboard and plastic, and landfill waste.
IMMIGRATION ADVISOR
“With contamination at well below 1% the audit demonstrates how well our community is doing with glass recycling,” Buttar says. “Glass bottles and jars collected in our district are sent to Auckland to be recycled into new containers right here in Aotearoa New Zealand. “Glass which is too highly contaminated can’t be recycled so it’s important we keep monitoring what we collect and encourage the community to continue recycling with care.” The majority of contamination found was general rubbish and non-recyclable glass like wine or drinking glasses ending up in the blue bin, but other recyclables, such as plastic and cans which should go into the yellow bin, and ceramics were also identified The audit, funded by the Glass Packaging Forum (GPF), was conducted over three months with council staff developing an online reporting system for glass collected from residential properties, commercial, public recycling bins and dropped off by the public at recycling stations.

Buttar says that made gathering data easy and effective and also allowed progress to be tracked in real time. “We now have an improved understanding of areas we need to focus on, such as ongoing operational and educational initiatives, to help keep our glass of good quality.” GPF scheme manager Dominic Salmon commended the council, residents and businesses for the very low contamination rates. “It’s really good to see results like this. Keeping glass as free from contamination as possible is essential to ensuring it gets recycled and doesn’t end up being wasted in landfill,” he says.

THE HANDS HOLD THE KEY TO GOOD HEALTH - KOREAN HAND THERAPY by Sue Fea
Skilled Korean acupuncturist Don Kim has returned to Queenstown after launching the Self Treatment Centre in Auckland in 2018 hoping to share his self-health care Korean Hand Therapy treatment as the perfect antidote in pandemic times. Don was fortunate to learn Korean Hand Therapy directly from its founder Oriental Medical Doctor T.W. Yoo and has been practising, or teaching it, for more than 35 years. He started teaching after discovering people gained much more health benefit from Korean Hand Therapy than from acupuncture. From 2004 he taught these simple treatment methods to his clients, the public and practitioners in New Zealand and Australia while offering traditional acupuncture treatment. He’s the only qualified professional who can teach Korean Hand Therapy in New Zealand and Australia. “The information I share is not just unique but clinically proven effective and easy to learn and apply,” he says. Initially Don studied political science. One day he sprained his ankle while playing tennis, but a friend fixed it within half an hour using Korean Hand Therapy. “I felt instantly better and played again straight away,” he says. From then on he was convinced of the powerful effect the treatment had on the body and started to learn the simple techniques which he claims can improve almost any conditions, including cancers. Don had a training at a Korean cancer clinic where any conditions including cancers were treated with Korean Hand Therapy. “Treating yourself is quite common in Korea. So many ordinary people there use their hands to improve their conditions.” says Don. “One hand represents the whole body so anyone can easily improve many conditions by simply stimulating points in the hands.” It’s so effective because of the close neurological connection between the hands and brain. “You can easily stimulate brain by using points in the hands.”
He’s seen many miraculous results with little effort. “Actually Korean Hand Therapy is more effective than professional treatments, especially for pain relief and acute injuries like sprained joints, back injury or whiplash,” he believes. “Nothing beats Korean Hand Therapy in my opinion. People normally experience instant relief.” Many clients have kindly put testimonials on his website sharing how effective Korean Hand Therapy is for so many conditions. “Among these are sore back, concussion, hay fever, chronic fatigue, cold or flu, loss of smell and taste, uterine cysts during pregnancy, stroke, cancers, just to mention a few,” he says. “It’s easy to learn and absolutely safe so anybody can learn it,” says Don. “It’s ideal during these times as people can stay at home and treat themselves and their families with amazing results, saving money on healthcare appointments at the same time.” Korean Hand Therapy requires only a small kit of easy-to-use tools, including pain free ones. “They are small and light enough to carry wherever you go,” he says. “For example, if you sprain a knee while tramping you can instantly fix it with these and carry on tramping.” Don’s planning to retire in a few years so is now focusing on teaching Korean Hand Therapy to anybody who’s interested. This is mainly through eight-hour, on-site courses at the centre in Lower Shotover, and through online courses and online consultation while offering acupuncture treatment. “In those eight hours people will be amazed at how many conditions they can easily improve themselves,” he says. For more information see: www.selftreatment.co.nz or contact Don with any questions at: The Self Treatment Centre 25 Banbury Terrace, Lower Shotover Ph: 0276982136 Email: oawcentre@hotmail.com

QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile
Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling Amy O’Reilly who is a Library Assistant at Queenstown Library.
@qldclibraries
Queenstown Lakes District Libraries
Kia ora, Dia duit, hello! My name is Amy O’Reilly and like many before me, my New Zealand journey began in 2018 with a backpack, a one-way flight, and an unfulfilled promise to be home within a year. Having a degree in journalism and a background in healthcare, my role as the community engagement and events library assistant at Queenstown Library combines my love of words, books, and people! If asked what my favourite book is, without much deliberation the answer would have to be Patti Smith’s Just Kids. At sixteen I finished the book for the first time, quite fittingly, in Newark airport as the sun set over the city skyline in the distance. I was so engrossed in said book, I missed that my gate number had changed after a 7-hour layover - cue a speedy pursuit through the airport on the back of a golf buggy with my nan. Minutes later we watched our flight take off through the terminal window. Thankfully the airline put us up in a hotel for the night and on the first flight out the next morning. This book’s been getting a lot of well-deserved attention recently within the Queenstown Library Book Club so if you’re interested to know what all the fuss is about, check it out. Pun intended. On that note, if ‘read more’ happened to make it onto your list of New Year’s resolutions, the Queenstown Library Book Club meet once a month and read everything from biographies to cult fiction. There’s a lot of freedom which makes for a great discussion, each month we choose a new genre or topic and everyone picks their own book to review. It’s a great way to expand your reading list and meet other readers. You’ll find more information about Book Club on our website or email me at amy.oreilly@qldc.govt.nz. It’s been a big year for books after starting my role at the library in December 2020. Anne Frank’s Diary was both incredible and heart-breaking and instigated an interest in historical non-fiction around World War II whilst Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights comforted the uncertainty of lockdown. The Young Adult section has some great finds which often get overlooked. I also enjoyed The Dharma Punks, a coming-ofage graphic novel by Chinese/New Zealand illustrator Ant
Sang. Exploring the realms of eAudiobooks felt like a bold move – admittedly I was quite late to the party – but I’m really enjoying the free library apps Libby and BorrowBox. Amongst my favourite novels of 2021 are The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
This time two years ago we were at a wonderful wedding high above Arrowtown - hundreds of friends from all over NZ and the world and our calendar was full of more weddings than we could even go to. As it turned out, it was the last wedding we’ve attended. All the others were cancelled or postponed (two of them for the fourth time) and many young couples have ended up just having a registry office marriage overseas, with few of their family or friends around. I’ve missed going to weddings so much that on Friday, I did a Mrs Noseyparker and sat outside the church to watch the very beautiful bride and her bridesmaids (my daughter included - I’m so lucky she managed to get back for it and have been sternly informed that she’s here to spend time with her friends and not just her mother)! and the fabulous former Curekids ambassador Sophie Newbold arrive. It was utter bliss and made me sad that there have been so few celebrations over the last two years in NZ. We all need to connect with the people we’ve known and loved for a long time, and it’s heartbreaking that so many families are being kept apart. Lots of us haven’t met our grandchildren yet, and it seems there are oodles of lockdown babies. When I was a rebellious teenager, 8 million years ago, we were told that girls who had sex before marriage would have TERRIBLE reputations, and would almost certainly get pregnant, and their children would be bastards, and society would shun them. Gosh, so far, all the little bastards I’ve met, and even those who enjoyed a miraculously short time between the marriage and being born, seem to be absolutely delicious and adored by everyone. Hurray for bastards!!! And hurray for all that lovely rain last week. The day before, it was so hot that we had our yoga class outside under the trees - I was trying to enjoy the birdsong and the dappled light, but I was a bit worried about the birds pooping on me. Next morning, there was thumping rain and 8 degrees. All my hydrangeas rehydrated and are looking very happy. To make my day perfect, the big mower turned up in the afternoon, and made the head high thistles and hemlock very unhappy by chopping them all down quicksmart. And huge cheers for the organisers of the Burns Supper and Ceilidh at the Arrowtown Hall. From the beautiful floral arrangements in the ladies’ loos (who knew thistles could look so good?) to the ever-frightening haggis - and bagpipes, and a sea of tartan and handsome men in kilts, it was a great event, and I’m sorry to be so old that I didn’t stay on for the reeling. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a ceilidh in summer, but maybe it’s because in Scotland it always seemed like winter? Best organisation of all was to have it on Saturday night, thus avoiding the dreaded red traffic light which would have ruined the whole thing. It was a fundraiser for Kiwi Kit and the Taramea Community Gardens - which makes events far more fun when you know it’s helping our community. I really hope it will happen again next year, and I’ll make sure to have a little nana nap beforehand so I can confuse everyone in Strip the Willow with my uncoordinated moves.

I hope you all enjoyed the festive season and were able to find some time to share with the people you love and to do the things you love doing. It was great to see a vibrant Queenstown with shops, restaurants and cafes busy and many New Zealanders making their annual Christmas and New Year’s trek to our incredible town. If it were not for the masks, a glimpse at the lakefront and the downtown area at Christmas time would have suggested it was just another year as locals and visitors went about their business. But we know 2021 was far from that and will go down as one of the toughest in Queenstown’s rich history. The current movement in the omicron situation, to the red alert level, has meant that at least the start of 2022 will have its challenges. I want those challenges to be met with a clear and direct response from the Government. It needs to lift its game after a year of mixed messaging and planning on the run. We know the Covid situation can move very quickly, just like the virus itself, but there is always the opportunity to plan ahead, particularly as we have the opportunity to watch what does and doesn’t work overseas before it hits our shores.
LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
That’s why I extensively lobbied for southern hospitals to upgrade their ICU capacity, ventilator stocks and Covid preparedness in 2021. In the coming days National’s caucus will gather in Queenstown to discuss our plans for the year ahead. I am excited to be the host MP in my home town. National has already offered practical alternatives to the Government’s Omicron response and we will continue those discussions. Raising the bar in accessing all aspects of healthcare will continue to be a priority for the electorate in 2022. A major upgrade of maternity services in Queenstown and the Central Otago region has been something I have lobbied strongly for and will continue to do so. The recent temporary closure of the Queen Mary Maternity Centre at Dunedin Hospital – the most significant maternity facility in the Southern District Health Board catchment – has demonstrated how badly broken the southern maternity system is. The Southern region, especially here in Queenstown, where there is a rapidly growing population, needs appropriate secondary maternity services to complement the local primary hub. In an emergency, Southland or Dunedin Hospitals are simply too far away and there have been cases where both of those facilities haven’t been staffed adequately to accept emergency arrivals. In 2022, this is simply not good enough and I will be working hard to effect change. Immigration was at the centre of a lot of my office’s work in 2021. Helping migrants keep calling Queenstown home so that they can continue contributing to our community was a pleasure. However, navigating challenging.

National made progress advocating for more sensible immigration policy in 2021, but the challenge remains in 2022. The Government must realign its policy settings to allow people we desperately need through our borders to fill positions in sectors which are chronically short of staff.

There are jobs waiting to be filled on one hand, yet on the other we have professionals including doctors and nurses stuck waiting on immigration lists. It doesn’t make sense. That is why National is working hard to offer practical alternatives. Though it is unlikely to be plain sailing, I am excited about the year ahead, about working hard for the people of the Southland Electorate and doing my part as a member of the National Party that is striving for a better New Zealand.

Council passes on airport land by Paul Taylor
Wānaka Airport has proved a huge embarrassment for QLDC over recent years, with community backlash against plans for expansion. QLDC granted a 100-year operating lease to Queenstown Airport Corporation, but that was deemed to be unlawful by the High Court, after a judicial review by Wanaka Stakeholders Group. QLDC did not appeal the ruling and the lease was set aside. Before Thursday’s meeting, Cr Niki Gladding said she was frustrated more information hadn’t been given to the public. “Always with land sales, you’ve got things you can’t disclose, but I think we could have said more. I don’t understand why we couldn’t say which site it is. “We can’t talk about the dollars, because it’s commercially sensitive, but personally I’d like some input from the community about the site itself.” Queenstown Lakes councillors have voted against buying a parcel of land at Wānaka Airport. The council had first right of refusal on the land and was told before Christmas that a potential sale had been agreed with a third party. Chief executive Mike Theelen called a full council meeting last Thursday, with the public excluded due to commercial sensitivity. But councillors opted against splashing the cash. “While [the] decision means council has elected not to exercise its right to acquire the lot at this time, council’s right of first refusal remains and could be exercised if the land becomes available again in the future,” Theelen says. That means the sale to the third party can go ahead without any further involvement from Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).
Gladding was also frustrated with the timing. Councillors received the report on Tuesday afternoon for the meeting, and a decision is required by Thursday. “It’s really last-minute. It didn’t need to be. If we had more time, we could have a say on how it was presented to the public, and said there needed to be a bit more detail.” Theelen said that was due to the timeline of events. Back in 2019, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) acted quickly to snap up available land on Ladies Mile. It bought the former Walker family property, the 14.6 hectare 516 FranktonLadies Mile for $13.78 million. And it recently announced it has bought 250m-high Mt Iron for the community, for an undisclosed amount.

Queenstown Lakes heads to Beijing by Paul Taylor
New Zealand has never won gold at the Winter Olympics.

Until Wanaka athletes Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous both won bronze at PyeongChang in 2018, the only medal the country could celebrate was Annelise Coberger’s silver in the slalom at the 1992 Games in Albertville, France. But when the NZ Winter Olympics team heads to Beijing next month, there’s a real chance one or more of the talented crop will stand on the podium and some may even top it. Snowboarder Sadowski-Synnott is on fire. The 20-year-old won double gold at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado, over the weekend, beating double Olympic champion Jamie Anderson into second place in the big air, a day after winning the slopestyle. She’s also the 2021 Snowboard Slopestyle World Champion. Freeskier Porteous, also 20, won his first X Games gold last year in the superpipe, and is the current Freeski Halfpipe World Champion. He’s also in form. This month, he won gold in the freeski halfpipe World Cup in the US. And Queenstown ski racing sensation Alice Robinson, who exploded on to World Cup circuit in 2018 and now has five World Cup Giant Slalom podiums to the name, including three wins, is also in contention. Nipping at their heels are a strong team of young skiers and snowboarders. Eleven of the 15-strong team either grew up in Queenstown Lakes’ mountains or gravitated here to live and train through the NZ winter season, particularly at Cardrona Alpine Resort.
Cardrona general manager Laura Hedley says: “It’s a pretty incredible New Zealand team out there at the moment. “They train hard in both seasons, the Southern hemisphere winter here and then into the big competitions in the Northern hemisphere. It never stops for them.” Cool Wakushima. Photo: Stadler
It is home to the Snow Sports NZ High Performance Centre, effectively the pipe and park team, while Cardrona also runs its own high-performance programme with the goal of helping the athletes into the SSNZ programme.
Hedley says being the home of high performance has been a long-term strategy for Cardrona, with the Wells brothers leading the way back in the day. They provided inspiration for the young grommets who are now coming to the fore, while Sadowski-Synnott, Porteous and the other Olympians spur on the next generation. “They’re shoulder-to-shoulder with these amazing athletes who are on the world stage and they get to watch them compete in their backyard. “So, they’re growing up around this incredible talent. “Zoi and Nico and the likes are so humble and these kids look at to them so much. My 7-year-old absolutely idolizes Nico, and the fact he gets to meet him and knows him is pretty cool for him.” The turnaround is short in this young sport. Wanaka 16-year-old Gustav Legnavsky, son of former Cardrona GM Bridget Legnavsky, and programme director for the high-performance pipe squad Pete Legnavsky, will be the youngest member of the team, competing in freeski halfpipe.

He was just 12 years old when he watched Nico and Zoi, themselves only 16, compete in PyeongChang, South Korea. “I have been 100% inspired by Nico,” Legnavsky said, when he was selected.

Junior athlete Ben Clark gets airborne at The Remarks
“He was my age when he went to PyeongChang and did really well. It would be cool to keep that legacy going on.” Other youngsters on the team include Queenstown’s Cool Wakushima, 19, who will compete in the women’s snowboard slopestyle and big air, while fellow Queenstowner Tiarn Collins, 22, will go in the men’s snowboard slopestyle and big air. Collins was selected for PyeongChang, but was injured on the eve of the Games. Both train at Cardrona, heading over the hill from home. Freeskier Margaux Hackett, daughter of bungy pioneer AJ Hackett, is also on the team, along with Ben Harrington, 20, Miguel Porteous, 22, Anja Barugh, 22, Chloe McMillan , 21, who will all compete in the freeski halfpipe, and Ben Barclay and Finn Bilous, who compete in the big air and slopestyle.
The Remarkables is set to become home of the Southern Hemisphere’s first ever Freeride World Tour [FWT] Academy, this winter. Junior Southern Lakes skiers and riders will have the chance to gain world-class experience by joining the globally recognised programme for freeski and high performance freeride. The Academy, officially called Freeride World Tour Academy The Remarkables - is affiliated with the sport’s pinnacle events – Freeride World Tour and New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour.
Lake Hawea’s Campbell Wright, 19, is set to become just the second ever biathlete to represent NZ, while Wellington speed skater Peter Michael, 33, and Auckland cross country skier Campbell Wright, 19, complete the roster.
The Remarks has been hosting the 4* Freeride World Tour Qualifier since 2012 and ski area manager Ross Lawrence is thrilled to be taking the mountain’s relationship with FWT to the next level.
A couple of hundred youngsters, aged five to 18, are in Cardrona’s high performance programme, which includes the Wanaka Alpine Ski Team, pipe and parks squad and Treble Cone Freeride Programme.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for up-and-coming skiers and riders to have access to such a high-level programme right here in their backyard,” Lawrence says.
They benefit from the $8 million of investment High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ) has poured into snow sports since PyeongChang.
“We’re honoured to be affiliated with the prestigious Freeride World Tour and fortunate that our terrain can accommodate any level of skier or rider, right through to world champions.”
That has included $306,000 last year to build an Olympic Winter Games quality halfpipe alongside the big air and slopestyle facilities at Cardrona, along with dedicated speed lanes at Coronet Peak for Alice Robinson and Para Alpine athletes, replicating the hard and icy conditions found at World Cup and Olympic level events. The halfpipe has been shaped by the same designer who has created the Beijing halfpipe, while Hedley says the park and grooming team are all top notch. “In NZ, we’re in a good space, we’ve got some really talented coaches, park builders and everything here, so we’re pretty lucky.” In 2020, HPSNZ spent $407,000 on a park and pipe facilities at Cardrona, and $500,000 in 2017 to install landing bags, enabling athletes to practice and perfect jump with reduced risk of injury. While overseas teams have trained in Queenstown Lakes in the past, the borders have been closed the last two winters, allowing the Kiwis to have it all to themselves. “We run events and see these guys throw down new tricks they’re testing, with the airbags we’ve got up there, and progression camps,” says Hedley.
The Academy is open to athletes aged 6 to 17 who live in the Southern Lakes, but those from outside the area, including inter nationally, can attend scheduled camps or drop-in for training prior to competitions.
Freeride World Tour athlete Blake Marshall will be head coach
Training won’t just be about skiing and riding, with safety, leadership, goal setting and mountain respect all part of the programme. Spearheading the Academy is Hannah Wilson as the Programme Director, while Head Coach will be none other than current Freeride World Tour athlete and local legend Blake Marshall.
“It’s amazing but you see them as friends and family. We’re in a warped reality where we rub shoulders with them, whereas they’re seen as international superstars.”
“To be working with the biggest name in freeriding is amazing, Marshall says. “The Freeride World Tour Academy bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the table, and to be able share that with junior athletes in the freeride and freeski space feels like an incredible way to give back to the sport.”
Wanaka will host the NZ Olympic Committee headquarters for the Games, with screens set up in a downtown restaurant, Red settings permitting, showing all the events. “We’ll all get together, holding our breath and ready to celebrate,” Hedley says.
WT Academy’s unique programme challenges young athletes to push their limits and gain skills to comfortably handle all types of terrain and snow conditions in a safe, controlled environment.
The duo will be joined by a team of experienced coaches. The Freeride World Tour is a global circuit of freeride snowboarding and skiing events which sees the best athletes in the world compete on the most challenging alpine faces at renowned ski resorts.

Its Tour Academy programmes, which are headquartered in Verbier, Switzerland, started in the Alps in 2013 and in Japan in 2018. New Zealand is only the seventh country in the world to host an Academy.

Microsoft’s make largest ever acquisition Microsoft announced last week it plans to buy video game giant Activision Blizzard for US$68.7B in cash—the company’s largest-ever purchase. Microsoft, which created and owns Xbox, is poised to become the world’s third-largest gaming company after China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Japan’s Sony Corp. when the deal closes. Microsoft said the acquisition will help grow its gaming business across mobile, the cloud, and more, as well as its ventures into the metaverse. The transaction’s announcement comes as Activision Blizzard — known for games such as “Candy Crush,” “Call of Duty,” and “World of Warcraft”— faces widespread sexual harassment allegations. The company has fired more than three dozen employees, according to reports, while thousands of other employees have demanded CEO Bobby Kotick to resign. Microsoft News

Tickets for Winter Olympics will not be sold to general public China announced it will no longer sell tickets to the general public for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics two days after Beijing reported its first case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. Beijing has announced strict “closed loop” safety measures for the Games, including daily testing for participants and requiring all athletes and staff to be fully vaccinated (or face a 21-day quarantine). The news comes as China continues to tighten restrictions to contain the highly transmissible variant. China has reported 1,389 cases over the last week, while the US has reported over 5 million cases in the same period. Separately, the US will not send diplomatic staff as a statement against China’s treatment of its Uyghur population. In addition, US athletes have been advised not to bring their cell phones to avoid potential surveillance and other security concerns. CNN
Drone attack in Abu Dhabi A drone strike claimed by Yemeni Houthi rebels hit a key oil facility in Abu Dhabi last Monday (Jan 17), causing three deaths and six injuries after three oil tankers owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. exploded. Another fire tied to the drone strike ignited at an under-construction extension of the Abu Dhabi International Airport, causing flight cancellations and delays. The drone attack comes about two weeks after the Houthi rebels seized a UAE cargo vessel in the Red Sea, a key route for international trade. Nanotherapy offers new hope for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes Researchers have opened new paths to islet transplantation by using nanoparticles to deliver immunosuppressive drug regimen. Individuals living with Type 1 diabetes must carefully follow prescribed insulin regimens every day, receiving injections of the hormone via syringe, insulin pump or some other device. And without viable long-term treatments, this course of treatment is a lifelong sentence. Pancreatic islets control insulin production when blood sugar levels change, and in Type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys such insulin-producing cells. Islet transplantation has emerged over the past few decades as a potential cure for Type 1 diabetes. With healthy transplanted islets, Type 1 diabetes patients may no longer need insulin injections, but transplantation efforts have faced setbacks as the immune system continues to eventually reject new islets. Current immunosuppressive drugs offer inadequate protection for transplanted cells and tissues and are plagued by undesirable side effects. Now a team of researchers at Northwestern University has discovered a technique to help make immunomodulation more effective. The method uses nanocarriers to re-engineer the commonly used immunosuppressant rapamycin. Using these rapamycin-loaded nanocarriers, the researchers generated a new form of immunosuppression capable of targeting specific cells related to the transplant without suppressing wider immune responses. COMMUNITY NOTES DOC’s Pest Trap Library Aotearoa New Zealand’s has unique and ancient native species of plants and animals which would be flourishing if our lands were free of predators. Often, we would love to hear the voices of the insects, reptiles and birds return to the community, but the natives are hampered by the pests living on our properties and around our homes.
Community News Arrowtown Tennis Courts Closed Surface upgrades to the Arrowtown tennis courts are underway and due for completion in March 2022. Access is still available to the club rooms during these works.
The team at the Dept of Conservation visitor centre in Queenstown can help, if you want to eradicate some pests around your place, by loaning you a trap and talking you through how to set it up and bait it. They have created a pest trap library where anyone can borrow traps to take home to eradicate pests around the garden. The pest trap library initiative has been in operation for six months now and the team is keen for more locals to take advantage of the opportunity. This is the first time that DOC has integrated the pest trap library into a visitor centre that’s so easily accessible which is another reason they are keen to see it succeed. The trap library project operates similarly to a book library, and not only will the DOC team lend you the trap, but they will also set you up with practical advice on backyard trapping and which are the best traps for your situation. They will also show you which bait to use, how to bait your trap and set it up safely as well as advise where to place it in your garden. You can borrow a DOC trap to eradicate rats, stoats and hedgehogs, and a month later bring it back. All at no cost. When you return it, they’ll ask for some information of what you’ve caught so they can keep a record of it. While they don’t supply the bait they can advise as to which bait works best to catch which little critters. The idea came about as the next step in helping improve biodiversity in the region, and also off the back of successful trials elsewhere in the country. DOC does a lot of planting around the district and public education, so it’s a logical next step to begin a trapping project that enables locals to do this themselves with no barriers.”

Photography was a Prophecy for Jackie Gay
“How I came to be a photographer was complete fate.” says Jackie. An opportunity was presented to her in 2009 in the surge of her mid-twenties while livin-it-up in Queenstown. Jackie had relished in the seasonal worklife balance. A snowboard instructor by day, Winnie’s restaurant manager by night and Doubtful Sound cruiser for Real Journeys over summer. But a buggered knee ruined the flow and pre-empted plans for America. Jackie picked up some casual work as a driver on a film set, where it so happened her prophet was sitting in the car. “There was this guy called Pierre Vinet’’ retells Jackie “he was Peter Jackson’s Stills Photographer. He and I got on so well! He really liked my vibe”. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting Jackie, you know she has a personality to energise a room and lift your mood. Approaching people and starting friendly conversations has never been an issue. She honed this confidence through her work in film casting. “It’s like hunting for human diamonds that fit the director’s vision” Says Jackie “There are so many amazing people in the Queenstown area. It’s really fun just rocking up to them and asking if they would like to audition”. Needless to say, Pierre Vinet was charmed by Jackie’s approachability “‘You’d be the perfect photographer. You have the perfect energy, you’re vibrant’ “ says Jackie as she recites Pierre with a French accent. “He said to me after the movie; It doesn’t matter what camera you have, it’s your eye. Buy whatever and just start working on seeing things, seeing compositions, seeing light. I’m going to call you in a couple of years’ time and if you can answer some photography questions for me, I will hire you as my assistant on the Hobbit. So that is how I got into photography.” shrugs Jackie. Was it just-like-that? Not quite. The road to photographic enlightenment was lit but some further training had to be done. Pierre was adamant not to be contacted... He who would contact her. She finished her stint on set and got a job as a receptionist upstairs at the hairdressing institution, Collective. Jackie warms when she talks of Collective. The space was light and bright and harnessed her creativity. “People got their hair and make-up. I’d be like ‘Oh can I take a photo of that?’ so I started doing head shots and working out of Collective.” That’s all it took to kick start her photography business ‘Still Vision’. “I was really lucky to have Deborah [Coburn]... She was so supportive of me. I was working their full time until Still Vision got in the way of working full time. I worked part-time until I got to the point where I thought I was ready to take that scary step and go into my own business full time.”
Behind the scene shot!
By 2012, Jackie was a bonafide full-time photographer. To display her newfound abilities, she compiled a calendar/ album called ‘Ink in Aotearoa’ featuring some of NZ’s top inked up musicians and dedicated it to Pierre Vinet.
“I went searching for him online” says Jackie “And that’s when I found out he had died. I was mortified. He was an inspiration!” Despite this or perhaps because of it, Jackie persevered with photography and through hard work has made her name as an accredited photographer in the industry. “I definitely trust that everything happens for a reason and you’ve gotta go with it. It’s funny, now I’ve done this full circle. That was my inspiration to work on movies as a still’s photographer but when I ended up starting Still Vision, I was just doing photography, portraits and events.” When covid hit and work dried up, she jumped onboard a film stills academy course run by kiwi stills photographer Nicola Dove, who has worked on the likes of James Bond - No Time to Die. “I did that and from there I’ve actually gone and started working as a stills photographer on movies.” Says Jackie Her first Film Stills client was for the series ‘One Lane Bridge’ and she is currently working on the stills for a short film ‘Maunga Cassino’. “It’s taken almost 12 years to go full circle.” Flow, positivity and intent drives Jackie today. Self-aware and ready to care. She feels incredibly blessed where the road has led her. “I’m into growth rather than a resolution.” Says Jackie, reflecting on her life and the New Year. “Slowly growing.” she adds. She grabs her phone and reads a quote. ‘Just a reminder that you don’t have to make resolutions or huge decisions or big proclamations. You can just set some sweet intentions and take each day as it comes’.

Arts+Culture It’s time for some classic Kiwiana by Bethany Rogers
Remarkable Theatre is running its thirteenth gardens shows this weekend with a sweet as twist.
In the meantime, they’re looking forward to the unique promenade theatre style of the garden shows.
The annual promenade theatre event, held in the Queenstown Memorial Gardens, will pay homage to some of the best Kiwi entertainment from across the decades.
“We always really enjoy being in the Gardens. It’s a nice change and a chance to really appreciate that space. What makes it fun is that there’s always a level of unknown when you’re in a public space like that. The ducks sometimes like to join in, or you’ll get a frisbee coming through the scene.
“There’s be seven shows all together this year,” explains show codirector Melanie Grindell, “the first show will be at six o’clock on Friday [28th] night, then we’ll have shows at 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm across Saturday and Sunday [29th and 30th January].” Each shows starts at the band rotunda in the gardens and spectators will follow the actors around the gardens as different scenes unfold. “The theme is Kiwi drama, so we’ve got scenes from Kiwi TV dramas and movies from the 1970s through to the 2000s. We’ve got scenes from Eagle versus Shark, the 80s soap opera Gloss (people tend to remember that quite fondly) and the TV game show It’s in the Bag.
“It’s nice, as actors, to be able to see the audience too. When you’re on a stage and it’s dark, you might see a couple of people in the front row or some glasses or something, but in the Gardens you can see the audience and get that feedback right away – and it’s interesting to watch what appeals and see which scenes are the crowd favourites. “The Gardens shows are something we love to put on for the community and we also try to get new actors involved – because the scenes are short, there are fewer lines to remember and it’s a great way for new actors to get involved. “It’s a great way for everyone to enjoy the gardens and enjoy some theatre.”
Sweet As Garden Shows At a glance Where: Queenstown Memorial Gardens, starting at the band rotunda When: Friday 28th January, 6 pm Saturday 29th January, 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm Sunday 30th January, 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm Entry: Gold coin donation, vaccine passes required BYO: Chair, blanket, picnic
Pint-Sized Play Competition Calling all playwrights! The annual Pint-Sized Play competition is open for entries. Writers are invited to submit an original script for a short play, capable of being performed with minimal props in a pub. Originating in Wales, the competition’s designed to bring original theatre experiences to people who might not traditionally head to the theatre. Pint-Sized Plays NZ is open to international writers. The best plays are anonymously selected for performance and over three show nights in Arrowtown, Wanaka and Queenstown, audiences vote for their favourites. The most popular play wins the esteemed ‘pint pot’ prize. Entry rules: Sophie Kennedy getting into character for 'It's in the Bag'
“You can expect comedy, a bit of drama and fabulous costumes!” A troupe of around 25 have been rehearsing for the shows since late last year. It’ll be Remarkable Theatre’s first show of the year, after the group’s big annual show was cancelled in 2021 due to lockdown restrictions. Mel says that the performance of Gone to Seed was much anticipated and Remarkable Theatre isn’t giving up on it, with the performance rescheduled for September 2022.
1. Scripts should require no more than 3 actors using a minimal number of props. 2. The author’s name must not appear in the script, as this is an anonymous competition. 3. Scripts should be emailed to remarkabletheatrenz@gmail. com 4. Limited to no more than 2 scripts per entrant. 5. Plays should be between 5-10 minutes long.
Art News Dali, Disney & Destino Show launches by Scott Kennedy
Career Development in the Arts
Unique opportunities for early-career professionals or students to develop invaluable skills in a range of arts-orientated roles are up for grabs in Queenstown. Last year’s inaugural 2021 Wakatipu Music Festival held in Queenstown initiated the Training Ground (master and apprentice programme) to address the shortage of professional-level and artistically-experienced management staff. The programme was highly results-oriented and very well received, and for 2022 the festival is picking up where it left off to further develop sustainable careers for key festival roles. In the process it is lifting capabilities to meet market demand as the district continues to artistically mature. A key goal of the festival is to help develop the local arts infrastructure, arts communities and audiences. The Queenstown Arts Centre has announced its latest show: Dali, Disney & Destino. The show of six limited-edition, large-scale Salvador Dali prints is a truly unique experience for all art lovers. It’s also a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase the art. The show opens on January 27th with the final night on February 3rd, where at 8pm all the prints will be sold at auction - LIVE. All the proceeds from these donated masterworks will go directly to the Queenstown Arts Centre to help grow and support community art in Queenstown. About the art: In 1946 Salvador Dali and Walt Disney started a collaboration on an animated film, Destino. The project was shelved because of financial pressure post WW2 and many people thought it was lost forever. Fifty years later it was reborn - Roy Disney, Walt’s son, picked up the project and in 2003 it was completed and released - and was nominated for an Oscar for best animated short. These six Serigraphs (Silkscreen prints) are from a limited edition of 275, exquisitely framed and come with a certificate of authenticity. Prints from key moments of the film, they have the rich, surreal and transmissive quality of the film itself. The prints have previously been valued at $4,000 - $6,000 NZD each. The show and sale: Starting on Thursday 27 January the art will be on show at the Queenstown Arts Centre along with the film, ‘Destino’ screening on a loop. On Thursday 3 February we will have a celebration to say goodbye to the art, culminating with a live auction of the work at 8pm. Experience these amazing pieces in person and help support the Queenstown arts community by taking one home! “It’s such a rare and exciting opportunity to see art like this up close and for us as an arts centre to be able to share it with our community before selling the pieces to support what we do - it’s just a dream come true!” The Queenstown Art Centre is at 49/48 Stanley Street and open daily from 10am-4pm
The first two apprentice roles being advertised in the career development programme are for a Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator and a Front of House and Ticketing Co-ordinator. Applications close on January 28 and the paid contract roles run from February 9 to April 18. The 2022 Wakatipu Music Festival runs from 11-18 April in Queenstown, over Easter weekend. Full role details are available on the website www. wakatipumusicfestival.co.nz. Festival Director Anne Rodda says the apprentices will ‘own’ and deliver the presentation of the Festival, supervised by experienced music and event industry professionals. “It’s a superb opportunity for young people with an authentic appreciation of New Zealand arts to get a solid foot in the door in their sphere of interest,” she says. “We’re looking for anyone keen to develop quality professional skills that will look good on their CV and future job applications, asking them to complete and submit an Expression of Interest for their preferred role.” This capability-building will be prioritised for and filled by district-based locals with an authentic effort to attract cultural and ethnic diversity. Best-practice mentoring techniques and associated duty-of-care will be provided by local experts in their fields. “If you’re a Central Otago resident, meet the legal requirements to work in New Zealand, are fully-vaccinated to meet the access requirements of our venues, and are at least 16 to 18 years old, we’d love to hear from you.” Other apprentice roles to come include Stage Manager, Audio engineer and AV Technician. Apprentices must be fully-available and committed for the duration of each contract. The Wakatipu Music Festival celebrates music making in many forms, weaving together New Zealand’s outstanding emerging artists and leading professional musicians with local performers, grassroots music initiatives and dedicated local and national educators. It’s three interconnecting components include local workforce development as above, high-performance artists performances and teaching from world-class musicians, and a week-long Showcase and Career Development Young Artist Programme for 12 exceptional NZ musicians (age 16-26, selected through national audition). The festival also features Community Engagement Workshops, professional development and a performance showcase for Central Otago-based professionals, music teachers, students, and ensembles.

Coronet Loop to debut at Motatapu by Paul Taylor
The Motatapu team has announced a new backcountry mountain bike race for the 2022 event, held on March 5. The 56km Coronet Loop Mountain Bike race will mark the official opening of the track, created by Soho Property Ltd, QEII National Trust and the Queenstown Trails Trust. The track gives riders the access to the spectacular Greengates Saddle, Deep and Coronet Creeks around the back of Coronet Peak, which have not previously been open for public access. Gemma Peskett, co-owner of Motatapu, says thanked the three organisations for the opportunity to run a race on this “very special track”. “The Coronet Loop is the perfect step up for our riders who have done the Macpac Motatapu valley mountain bike and want to move up to the next level. “There are some tough climbs and fast descents, accompanied by more technical terrain and challenging course length, which will appeal to an intermediate to advanced rider. “Plus, the most epic views throughout the course. We have been working closely with the team, to make sure we create a race which not only celebrates the opening of the track but will be a fantastic regular addition to the Macpac Motatapu event lineup.”
“We believe the new track will be a fantastic addition to the events on race day, and to the ‘Arrowtown Experience’ for the public in the future.” And Mark Williams, CEO, Queenstown Trails Trust, and acclaimed enduro rider, says the event will quickly become one of the ‘must-do’ races on the NZ calendar.
The first 100 spots were made available to people who’d already signed up for this year’s Motatapu. The rest went on sale on Monday. Top cross-country riders Craig Oliver and Sam Shaw are booked in, too.
“The awe-inspiring terrain which the trail traverses will be a highlight in any athletes career, and we’re stoked that we’ll be able to celebrate the official opening of the trail in conjunction with our event partners, the Macpac Motatapu.”
Three of the five Motatapu events have already sold out, and there are only a few spots left in the 47km UDC Mountain Bike
The Macpac Motatapu is one of the largest off-road events on the New Zealand sporting calendar, with close to 4000 participants in 2020.
Joanna Booker, Soho Property Ltd says they are excited that the first event on the new track will be the Macpac Motatapu Race.
Runners and riders traverse the Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe high country stations between in Queenstown and Wānaka.

Summer Salad
Recipes
Beetroot, spiced almond, date and feta salad This salad is super tasty and quick to make. It has so many amazing flavours. It’s great as a side dish or on its own for lunch.
Ingredients
• 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 1 teaspoon sugar • ½ thinly sliced red onion • 3 large or 4 medium peeled beetroot, cut into 2-3cm cubes • olive oil for cooking • ½ cup chopped raw almonds • 3 cloves chopped garlic • 1 tablespoon ground sumac • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes • 120g baby spinach and/or baby beetroot leaves • 4-5 or 6-8 regular dried dates, chopped medjool dates • 75-100g crumbled feta • extra virgin olive oil for dressing salad
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper.
2. In a bowl, mix vinegar and sugar. Add onion and toss to coat. Set aside in the fridge to marinate for about 20 minutes while you prepare the rest of the salad. 3. On the lined tray, toss beetroot with a good drizzle of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 25-30 minutes or until tender. 4. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a frying pan. Cook almonds and garlic for about 2 minutes until golden. Turn off heat and mix in sumac and chilli.
5. When ready to serve, drain red onion (reserve vinegar) and toss with salad leaves, beetroot, almonds, dates and feta. Dress with extra virgin olive oil and some reserved vinegar.
Side notes:
Marinating the onion for this recipe in a little vinegar and sugar is keyIt softens the onion and gives it a nice pickled flavour, which is delicious with creamy feta, roast beetroot and spiced almonds. Sumac is a reddish purple powder made by grinding up dried berries from the shrub of the same name. It has a tart flavour (much like lemon) and adds a lemony taste to many Middle Eastern dishes. I recommend you try to seek some out, I saw it in the herbs section in New World, but if you can’t find it you can substitute it with a little lemon zest or leave it out altogether from this recipe.
Pasta Salad with Tomatoes and Corn 4–6 servings
Ingredients
• 5 tablespoons olive oil • 5 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil • 2 large garlic cloves, chopped • 1 1/2 cups fresh corn kernels or a can • ½ kg plum tomatoes, chopped • 220 gm penne pasta, freshly cooked • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
1. Whisk 4 tablespoons oil, vinegar, basil and garlic in large bowl to blend.
2. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in heavy frying pan over medium heat. Add corn; sauté 3 minutes. 3. Add corn to dressing in bowl.
4. Add tomatoes, pasta and cheese to bowl and toss to blend. 5. Season salad with salt and pepper.
