Merry Christmas This is the last issue for 2021 and I’m sure you, like me, are ready for a decent break over the Christmas New Year holiday season. The team and Directors at the Lakes Weekly would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year. 2021 has been a long year and one that many of us will be pleased to say goodbye to, especially if you are associated with the tourism and visitor market for you it’s been a brutal year. Hopefully 2022 will see a slow return of international visitors, which will be very welcome. Also very welcome is the return of homeowners, friends and family from Auckland. It’s a wonderful to have you back and see the town start to get busier. The Southern Lakes region is special and it’s somewhere all of New Zealand can enjoy. This place we call home is for all of NZ. Unfortunately, Covid is never far from our reality these days. Vaccines and the new strains continue to play havoc with our lives. That shows no sign of decreasing in 2022 with the arrival of Omicron and the resulting race for booster shots. The cancellation of New Year downtown fireworks and Lake Hayes A&P Show demonstrate we’re still some way away from getting back to life as it was pre-Covid.

Changed also has been our attitude toward how we approach Covid. Vaccines and mandates have created big rifts in the community and even amongst family members. This has come with some undesirable social effects, including some who’ve bluntly and rudely taken their views out on anyone they see as removing their ‘rights’. Thankfully this seems to be dying down and I certainly hope that the break will be an opportunity to destress and build back civility into the conversation. Every Christmas is always a stumble to the finish line after a big year but 2021 is even more so. Many have not had the opportunity for a decent holiday this year and with the staffing levels very tight, the pressure has grown exponentially. We are physically and mentally shattered and ready for some time relaxing with friends and family, which is ultimately one of the key things Christmas is all about.

through was “eight or 10 years ahead” of its time, as not enough progress had been made on the wider active travel network.
Queenstown councillors voted seven-to-four on Thursday afternoon not to proceed any further with the controversial route through Hotops Rise, connecting Park Street and Camp St.
“So, I’m thinking the worst, that we’ve got some money and need to spend it,” Clark said.
Instead, they instructed staff to go away and investigate the feasibility of an alternative route proposed by Queenstown Trails Trust boss Mark ‘Willy’ Williams and then report back. That would see cyclists use the recently-upgraded and widened path through the Queenstown Gardens. They could then connect to Camp Street via the path alongside Horne Creek. The Hotops Rise plan would have seen the removal of 42 trees, including Beech and also non-native Douglas Fir. The now-abandoned cycle path itself would have had a steep 15-degree gradient, and aimed to provide an active travel route. It was at an advanced stage of planning, funded by Crown Instructure Projects (CIP) money. Jay Cassells, of the Friends of the Wakatipu Gardens and Reserves advocacy group, says he was heartened by seeing local democracy in action, with councillors challenging staff over the plans and ultimately voting against them. “Ratepayers could pull up a chair and marvel,” Cassells says. “One of the things that has really troubled me and others is how much sway the bureaucrats and non-elected executive have in this local democracy. “So, it was a great relief, to be honest, and without wishing to sound patronising, I’m really grateful to those councillors who voted for the motion.” Cr Niki Gladding proposed the alternative motion to not proceed with the proposed route (Hotops Rise) and instead investigate the alternative. Esther Whitehead was seconder, and the mayor Jim Boult, and councillors Quentin Smith, Craig Ferguson, Penny Clark, Niamh Shaw, supported it. Deputy mayor Callum MacLeod, councillors Glyn Lewers, Val Miller and Heath Copland voted against. Cr Clark, at Thursday’s meeting, said she believed the Hotops Rise cut-

Wanaka councillor Quentin Smith, who uses a wheelchair, questioned the gradient on the proposed route, and said active transport requirements could mean a 1.4m fence was needed along the side of the Hotops Rise path. Parks & Reserves planner Christine Skipworth told councillors if they voted for the alternative route, “we’d have to rethink quite a few things about how people move through that area . . . it could be complex . . . not just for the Gardens but for Marine Parade as well.” She said there could be issues where the four footpaths meet, on narrow sections, entranceways and the area by the pond, which had been designated a “tranquil zone”. The “existing desire line” would be changed, she said, as a wider footpath and cycleway had been built along Park St. It connects to the top of Hotops Rise. Asked about the CIP funding, council infrastructure boss Peter Hansby believed there could be some flexibility about how its spent, but he “couldn’t guarantee it”. Cassells and Park St resident and former council planning manager Brian Fitzpatrick, who has also led the charge against the plans, spoke in the public forum, claiming the Hotops Rise project went against the council’s own rules. Cassells says: “They have been very cavalier about the law, the facts and the wellbeing of the community. “But I’m going to issue an invitation to Peter Hansby to get in touch with us immediately, so we can all start afresh and together. “I’ll resist asking how much it all cost. I’m bloody glad this one has landed, because people needed to see that.”

Investors are losing interest in Queenstown Lakes property but outof-towners looking to relocate are still splashing the cash, says a local property expert.

Owner-occupiers were the most prevalent buyers in November, many from the North Island, some buying subject to viewing. “With the Queenstown-Lakes District becoming a more desirable place to live, and an increase of people having the option to work remotely, it is expected that more out of town market activity will occur as borders open,” she adds. The latest REINZ monthly figures show residential property across Otago is generally selling within 29 days, including the 125 properties that sold in Queenstown Lakes. Nationally, there are early signals to suggest a slowing down of the skyrocketing price growth, which has seen median prices across New Zealand as a whole increase 23.8% from $747k in November 2020 to $925k last month. Jen Baird, chief executive of REINZ, says: “FOMO — fear of missing out — is beginning to dissipate. “The enduring strength of property prices means some vendors may be less inclined to act now, without fear of missing their preferred prices later.”

But across New Zealand inventory levels increased 5.1% annually and listings increased 9.0% — providing buyers more choice and giving reluctant sellers confidence that if they take their current property to market, they will be able to buy their next one. “Despite steady growth, headwinds are gathering. Government measures to moderate the New Zealand property market, the Reserve Bank’s OCR increases and growing challenges around financing as banks tighten their lending criteria are aligning,” Baird adds. “While the longer-term impacts of these changes will play out over the coming months, the strength of the market suggests that the growth trend will continue — albeit with a more moderate trajectory.”

Passengers arrive on the first flight from Auckland in 117 days
Omicron fears stall border call by Paul Taylor
What a difference a week makes. Last Monday, Destination Queenstown boss Paul Abbot urged the Government to at least consider opening the borders to fully vaccinated Australians without requiring them to self-isolate for seven days on arrival. He also wanted more clarity on when self-isolation might be removed for other nationalities arriving in NZ, after borders reopen on 30 April. It followed comments from Tourism Minister Stuart Nash that it could be next summer before there is any significant inflow of visitors. But, Abbot now says it is obviously “hard to argue” for relaxed conditions following the rapid spread of the highlytransmissible Omicron variant around the world, which has seen Australia with record daily case numbers and other countries head back into lockdown. “To be honest, it looks like the whole thing is escalating again and I can’t see any way around the Government wanting to take a bit of a breather and assess what the possible impact is going to be,” he says. The first case of Omicron in NZ was detected in Christchurch MIQ on Thursday. As of Sunday, there were 13 cases in NZ, all in MIQs. Abbot says the latest announcements from Government appear to be “mentally preparing everybody” for the MIQ system to continue beyond the dates earmarked for the introduction of self-isolation as an alternative. “It’s a tough one, unfortunately, but the health system could be quickly overwhelmed if the numbers increase significantly as they have elsewhere.” Domestic tourism, therefore, appears again to be the only source of income for Queenstown Lakes for the foreseeable future. The first flight from Auckland in 117 days arrived in the resort on Wednesday morning, carrying 168 passengers, reuniting families and friends, as well as bringing much-needed tourists to town. Those on board included Auckland lawyer and former Queenstown Wakatipu
High School pupil William WallaceBlakely. He was met by his dad Philip in the terminal, the first time they’ve seen each other in person for six months. “I was pretty keen to see them, so got the first flight,” he said. “To be honest, it’s felt quite normal up there over the last maybe three weeks, with having additional freedom, but it’s very nice to get down here and see the mountains.” He plans to stay six weeks, using the holiday days he’s saved up from work, including a cancelled ski trip in August. “I was due to come down for skiing too, two days before the lockdown. I’d bought new skis and boots; they’re sitting in the garage unused.” The black Air New Zealand A321 was the first of 11 flights scheduled from Auckland that day, with about 1,500 passengers in total. Over the holidays as a whole, more than 160,000 passengers are expected to pass through Queenstown Airport, with 1,262 flights to and from all domestic destinations, an average of 250 a week. Peak days will be 24 December with 46 flights scheduled to arrive and depart, and 2 January with 45 flights scheduled. Abbot says the numbers are down on last year, so far. “That’s down to the uncertainty out there. People aren’t willing to commit 100% because no one is sure what’s going to happen, and I suspect people are opting for Christmas holidays where, if the worst happens, they can drive home.” There were 94 new community cases of Delta over the weekend, all in the North Island, the majority in Auckland, bringing the total number of active cases to 1,902. But NZ did pass the 90% fully vaccinated threshold.

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. Yikes - this is my last column of the year - please let 2022 be a better year for everyone who’s aching to see their family and friends in other countries, and for all the local businesses who have been stretched to breaking point with all the borders closed. You can make a donation towards the costs of the judicial review being held in January to see if it’s even legal to stop New Zealanders being able to return to their own country. Totally open borders would be the dream Christmas present for so many of us. My sister was born on December 25 (stupid her) and she’s sent me a cartoon of the three wise men giving Jesus his presents, and saying, “Now just remember. these presents are for your birthday AND Christmas”. She claims that’s been the story of her birthday every year. Global warming doesn’t seem to have reached our part of the country. A group of us were going to do a day walk up the Hooker Valley to see the famous Mt Cook lilies, but the forecast was for howling gales, single digit temperatures and some good dollops of rain. I’‘ve just looked it up and apparently December is usually the rainiest month - I never knew that!! So no spying on the flowers, and they’re probably just a sodden, tattered mess by now. All our Auckland friends have arrived with far too few clothes for our climate but it hasn’t dampened their joy at being able to get here. No wonder they were all so peeved about being in lockdown for so long - none of them even know anyone who’s had Covid, and they’re all convinced that if they do get it, it will be from being on a plane with dopey Jetstar not even checking if anyone’s vaccinated, and Air NZ letting all those people on without facemasks. I can’t help thinking that of all the businesses wanting to keep Covid levels down, the airlines would be the keenest to enforce regulations, but I’m just a simple old housewife, so what would I know? Although I’m what the newspapers would call an elderly woman if I got hit by a car, I’m still lucky enough to have my mother still alive (even if I’d like to murder her some days!) and even luckier to be invited to a mother and daughter lunch. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can organise a mother, daughter and granddaughter lunch when my daughter finally gets back to NZ - I wonder if she dreams of murdering me? I’m no huge fan of Christmas but I do adore the annual carol singing party we insist on being invited to. Rollicking good fun with Mark Wilson on the keyboard and Justin Abbiss who’s a fabulous singer bossing us all around and turning innocent bystanders into anxious soloists. Everyone from the tiniest children, to the wobbliest, deafest oldies muddling up the words to the Twelve Days of Christmas, and nearly reaching the high bits of Hark The Herald Angels Sing makes for a truly fabulous start to the holiday. And “The Rescue”, which sounds very unChristmassy a documentary about the Thai schoolboy football team that got trapped in a cave network is all about kindness and sacrifice and HUGE bravery. Even though I know how it ended (the title is a pretty obvious clue!) this story of most unlikely heroes is a real cracker. Merry Christmas to you all and see you in 2022!!!

29 local business learn to calculate their greenhouse gas emissions
NEW Heli-gin tours a world first Altitude Tours launched the world’s first heli-gin tour. The unique tour is around some of the country’s most coveted gin spots, with helicopter transfers provided by The Helicopter Line. A by-road option is also available via luxury Mercedes vehicles. Altitude Tours managing director Nigel Hobbs says “Gin is very ‘in’ right now and distilleries are popping up everywhere,” he says. There are two experiences – the six-hour Queenstown Gin Tour and the sixhour Queenstown Heli-Gin Tour which includes a scenic flight to the Cardrona Distillery, tastings in private rooms, shared grazing boards and a traditional German Tarte Flambee pizza at the Gin Garden.
APPOINTMENT 29 local businesses learnt how to measure their carbon footprint at the initial workshop.
Wao Aotearoa delivered the first phase of its Climate Action Initiative by taking 29 local businesses through its initial workshop last week, where they gained the knowledge and tools to assess their greenhouse gas emissions. The programme aims to give local businesses and schools a roadmap for calculating and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, runs for 12 weeks. Dr Carly Green, a Wao trustee and intergovernmental panel on climate change author, led the businesses in the initial workshop. Grace Mitchell from Queenstown’s Active Adventures was one of the participating businesses. “The first workshop of the Wao Climate Action Initiative was very interesting and valuable. From not knowing anything about calculating greenhouse gas emissions, I came away from the workshop feeling like I had a good grasp of the basic concepts and enough knowledge to start working with others in our business to calculate our emissions,” said Mitchell. The group will spend the next six weeks measuring their greenhouse gas numbers before re-convening for the next phase of the initiative in February. Mitchell went on to say “I learnt a lot, and the CIA team were great at simplifying the more complicated information for those of us that are not so science-minded. It was good to connect with other local businesses that have the same goals toward improving their sustainability, and I’m looking forward to the next workshop already,” added Mitchell. Olivia Bonifant, program manager is hopeful this marks the beginning of change. “We - as a community - need to collectively recognise the importance of reducing our greenhouse gases. Our hope is that as these businesses move forward through the programme they will not only be instrumental in drastically reducing our district’s emissions, but inspire other businesses to do the same,” Bonifant said. Climate Action Initiative programme is jointly funded by Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT), Destination Queenstown (DQ) and Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).

Flood’s appointment replaces the late Sir Eion Edgar. Trustees are responsible for managing funds of more than $450 million and granting funds for charitable purpose within the Central Lakes region. The Trust searched for appropriate expertise regarding investments made over time as the diversification, scale and complexity of the Trust’s investment portfolio increasingly intensifies. Queenstown based, Flood is an experienced business leader, with more than 25 years’ experience in the global investment management industry having held senior leadership roles in London, Hong Kong and Singapore. He currently serves on the Board of the Queenstown Airport Corporation where he is Deputy Chair concurrent with his role as Chairman of the Safety & Operational Risk Committee. Simon has also served as QAC’s Managing Director. He is a trustee of the University of Canterbury Foundation, a member of the University of Canterbury Foundation Finance Committee, and a Trustee for the Lakes District Hospital Foundation.
IMMIGRATION UPDATE Some new resident visa holders now cleared for entry The Minister of Immigration has now officially cleared a new group of resident visa holders to enter the country. Effective from 8 December any individual who holds a resident visa that allows entry to New Zealand for the first time as a holder of that visa, and as long as that visa was obtained from a residence application accepted for consideration by Immigration New Zealand before 19 March, can enter the country. This will apply to all residence categories.

Monthly Column Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
I have been immensely proud of the innovation, cooperation and determination that has seen the Queenstown community through a challenging 2021. In amongst the obvious major challenges, our community has got on with the job as best they can, supporting each other through this unique period in our town’s rich history. Amid the challenges, my office has assisted and advocated for many people in our community. I have worked to assist with many cases of people who have wanted to return to Queenstown but have encountered arbitrary and inflexible immigration rules. Many of the residents my office have assisted with have involved skilled workers who have, or who want to, make important contributions to our community. It is very pleasing to know that there are many people that will now be able to spend Christmas in Queenstown this year, after it not looking too hopeful earlier in the year. Clearly there is more work to do in assisting more businesses, as well as healthcare and aged care providers, to be linked with the specialist and essential workers they need, and that will continue next year. Naturally, healthcare and the protection of our community has been another high priority for me this year. I have advocated for many constituents who have encounters barriers getting adequate access to the care they need. It has been satisfying to see progress for those I have been able to help, but with each case I am shown there is a lot more work to do. We have made progress and my lobbying has resulted in policy changes for the good and I want to see more of that in 2022. A full year as an MP takes you on an incredible journey, travelling to all parts of the electorate meeting incredible, inspiring, and unique people. I am genuinely proud to represent all of you, and I am eager to continue to advocate for a better Queenstown, a better Southland Electorate and a better New Zealand in 2022.

Manaia Lounge reopens to offer Domestic travellers the lounge experience Locals and visitors departing on Domestic flights will have the option of enjoying extra space and comfort in the Manaia Lounge, which is usually reserved for International travellers. Located on the first floor of Queenstown Airport, past security screening, with iconic views to the mountains. The lounge caters for up to 150 guests and its facilities include a business centre with free Wi-Fi and desktop computers as well as TV and reading areas, dining areas and dedicated bathrooms. PlaneBiz Station Manager Kellie Clarke (known as KC) says that her team are delighted to offer a premium service for domestic travellers. “This is a great option for people wanting more peace of mind when travelling over the next few months. We know that some are looking for some extra space and comfort or to treat themselves at the start or end of a holiday after a tough year, so hopefully we can help them relax and enjoy a bit of pampering.” Queenstown Airport CEO Glen Sowry says “We’re gearing up for a busy summer holiday period at the airport and we’re stoked that the Manaia Lounge will be opening up for Domestic travellers. It’s a great opportunity for people to try the lounge and treat themselves.” The Manaia Lounge operating hours will be 0900-1700 until 24 December 2021, CLOSED on 25 December, and 0900-1800 from 26 December onwards.

“For the students to gain more confidence and for their parents and grandparents to be able to celebrate their achievements together, especially in these Covid times, was very special. “As a teacher, my heart pumps like crazy when I see the students so happy and satisfied, taking up the challenge to go and perform in front of an audience.” Piano performance images by Sean Drader.
The run-up to Christmas never feels complete without a musical Christmas concert (or three). Pianist and music teacher Kinga Krupa runs a Christmas-themed piano concert every year. The events showcase what her young piano students have learned over the year. Like many in the music and performing arts community, it has been a challenging year for Kinga and her students. Lockdowns and event restrictions meant that Kinga’s piano school had to adapt. She also had to find a new teaching venue when the existing space couldn’t accommodate the piano students any longer. “This year, the concert and our lessons were at Liger Leadership Academy, who kindly invited us to use their space,” says Kinga. “We have immediately found common language as our values strongly align: the Liger team also are community-oriented with the mindset of providing the highest quality of education, in the best interest of the students. “Then, during the lockdown, we had online piano lessons. We decided to go ahead with our Christmas concert too because that gave us all a goal to stay motivated and keep learning.” The concert went ahead on 11th December at Liger Academy, with around 50 students aged 5-18 years old playing across three separate mini-concerts for a small audience of family and friends. “Due to uncertainties caused by Covid, we needed to limit the audience to the piano families, but we were very grateful we could still have the concert at all. The students have worked so hard on their repertoire this year and this was an opportunity for them to show off their progress in front of siblings, parents and grandparents. “Concerts like this help us create the community and keep our spirits positive in challenging times.” Each year, the students help to MC and organise the event. They practice their scripts, show up for rehearsals and are involved in decorating the venue. Kinga says it’s an important part of music performance and despite this year’s challenges, the students rose to the occasion. “This year’s concert was great for the students and their families in so many ways,” says Kinga.
In pictures: Practically perfect in every way Frankton-based aerial arts and circus studio Silk and Circus held its end of year shows on 10th and 12th December. The Mary Poppins themed show featured performances on aerial silks, lyra, hammock and trapeze with short theatrical performances before each aerial act. Silks and Circus founder Lara Laverdure said: “Our circus and aerial kids put a lot of effort into their weekly class during term 4, learning their 3 to 5 minute routines in 8 weeks and their performances were outstanding! We were so pleased to be able to go ahead with the shows in times where a lot of events and competitions have been cancelled. It was great to see both the parents and the kids really enjoy themselves.”

COMMUNITY NOTES TURN UP THE MUSIC The Wakatipu’s wonderful Turn Up The Music Charitable Trust currently offers music lessons in 10 different instruments to 140 kids through its music school locally, with 20 or so assisted by scholarships and half price tuition subsidies. Southern-born Kiwi singer songwriter Jackie Bristow, who has been back in New Zealand since last year’s lockdown, has teamed up with the school and has created a children’s mini band that performs with her locally. Jackie was home from Nashville before beginning an American tour when the first national lockdown hit. Turn Up The Music School Charitable Trust general manager Tiffany Bindon says Jackie has been a real asset to the team offering singing, songwriting and guitar lessons. Jackie and her mini band are excited to have just released their own Christmas song that they’ve written together too.
Community News Christmas Rubbish Collections All kerbside collection dates will remain the same over the Christmas and New Year period. If you have excess waste or recycling to dispose of, and you’re looking to use the transfer stations in Queenstown or Wānaka, these facilities will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Wakatipu Recycling Centre, including the public recycling drop-off area, will also be closed on these days.
Parking changes coming to Frankton Residents close to Queenstown Airport will be relieved that change is coming to parking conditions in local streets. Residents have been concerned that airport passengers were parking in local streets taking up parks’ residents use near their homes. Council have agreed to introduce a 48-hour parking limit which will affect several streets near the airport and enforcement will begin when the new signage is in place.
Bus shelters in Frankton Two new bus shelters in Frankton have been completed in time for the Christmas break! The shelters include seating and space for those using wheelchairs, or parents with prams to safely wait for the bus. Having somewhere to shelter from the rain is a plus too! Alongside the shelters is a rubbish and recycling bin and bike park facilities. Bikers, are covered with new bike racks.
Tiffany says the school has a waitlist and is currently seeking more teachers to keep up with demand, especially to learn piano, strings, woodwind and drums. There’s been a huge increase in need with student numbers doubling during the past year and the trust is on the look-out for sponsors to enable more kids to take music lessons with its 14 teachers. “The whole of the Wakatipu needs to be blanketed by the warmth and comfort that music and creativity can bring to young lives,” says trustee Mary Phillips. “Jackie has seen that need and made a huge difference in local children’s lives,” she says. “Families need that at the moment, especially children. I think they’re having a rough ride and they haven’t been able to do a lot of their usual things, and some families are having financial difficulties.” The trust is offering three new 12-month scholarships for kids next year (2022), valued at around $1000 each, in addition to its subsidised tuition. “There may well be opportunities in that for children to go out of town to see a symphony orchestra, or tickets to touring international acts,” says Mary. Former trustee Jillian Jardine has opted out with a major commitment in the upcoming year, but has donated the Jardine Cup for the music school’s Most Improved Musician. “Jillian has made a huge difference to the Wakatipu community as she was initially the inspiration to get the Turn Up The Music Trust off the ground,” says Mary. “Her never ending optimism and tenacity, will be missed.” To get in touch email Tiffany on: info@turnupthemusic.co.nz
Changes to Lakes District Hospital entrances from Wednesday 22nd December To keep Lakes District Hospital safe for community, patients and visitors there will be a few changes to the hospital access from Wednesday 22nd December: • Access to the Emergency Department will be from the back entrance (ambulance entrance) on Lucas Place • The entrance to the maternity ward will be around the side of the maternity unit at the front of the hospital • Patients visiting the hospital for other appointments including Outpatients clinics, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and X-Ray/ CT or visitors should continue to use the front door. The new access to the Emergency Department means patients will no longer have to walk through the hospital to enter the Emergency Department. This will ensure patients who are attending ED who may have respiratory symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 do not come into contact with patients who are visiting other departments in the hospital. The new access to the maternity ward will ensure the ward is separate from the rest of the hospital so maternity ward patients and their visitors will no longer need to walk through the hospital. “There is COVID already in the community in other parts of the country and with the opening up of Auckland we are anticipating an increase in visitor numbers to the district, and subsequently to the hospital. These changes are being put in place to keep everyone as safe as possible,” says Lakes District Hospital Operations Manager, Emily Nelson. “We screen all visitors and patients who enter the hospital for COVID-19 and although this is stringent, it can never be watertight so these changes ensure an added layer of protection for our patients, visitors and staff. We apologise for any inconvenience, but we hope the public will understand the reason for the changes.” Key information for patients and visitors: Entry to the Hospital ED patients: All access to the Emergency Department will be from the BACK ENTRANCE on LUCAS PLACE from Monday 20 December. • This entrance is the ambulance entrance across from the airport. ARTS Anne Rice, ‘Interview with the Vampire’ Writer, Dies at 80 Anne Rice, influential author of “Interview with the Vampire,” died last week due to complications resulting from a stroke. She was 80. Born in New Orleans in 1941, Rice became renowned the world over as a writer of gothic fiction, with her books selling more than 150 million copies globally. In the early 1970s, while grieving the death of her daughter Michelle, she began converting one of her stories into what became her first novel, the gothic horror “Interview with the Vampire,” which was published by Knopf in 1976. The book was the first of ten in what is collectively known as “The Vampire Chronicles.” It was adapted by Neil Jordan as a 1994 film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Christian Slater, with Kirsten Dunst playing Claudia. Rice adapted the screenplay from her novel and the film gathered two Oscar nominations and a brace of BAFTA wins Variety
MUSIC Vicente ‘Chente’ Fernández, ‘El Rey’ of ranchera music, has died at 81 Vicente Fernández, an icon of traditional Mexican music, has died. He was 81. The announcement from his family did not give a cause of death, but the singer had been hospitalized since August, after a fall at his Guadalajara ranch in the central state of Jalisco required an emergency spinal surgery. Fernández was largely considered the last living legend of the Mexican ranchera, the style of song deeply rooted in the values and traditions of rural Mexico. He sang about honor and courtship, cockfights and rodeos, love and heartbreak – all while dressed in the elegantly embroidered costume of the charro, Mexico’s chivalrous cowboy, and accompanied by a full mariachi ensemble. POLITICS Israel’s Bennett makes first official visit to UAE Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made a historic trip to the United Arab Emirates, the first visit by an Israeli premier, as part of a blitz of regional diplomacy against the backdrop of struggling nuclear talks with Iran. Israel has watched with concern as Iran has pushed a hard line against negotiators meeting in Vienna, at once demanding sanctions relief while accelerating its nuclear program. Bennett’s trip to Abu Dhabi, where he met with Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed, is a milestone for both Israel and its new leader. Israel and the UAE last year signed a normalization deal brokered by the Trump administration under the “Abraham Accords,” a series of diplomatic accords with Arab countries that also included Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS In a first, Starbucks workers agree to union in Buffalo, NY Starbucks workers at a store in Buffalo, New York, voted to unionize on Thursday, a first for the 50-year-old coffee retailer in the U.S. and the latest sign that the labor movement is stirring after decades of decline. The National Labor Relations Board said that workers voted 19-8 in favor of a union at the Elmwood Avenue location, one of three stores in Buffalo where elections were being held. A second store rejected the union in a vote of 12-8, but the union said it might challenge that result because it wasn’t confident all of the eligible votes had been counted. The results of a third store could not be determined because both sides challenged seven separate votes. AP

Nau mai haere mai, welcome to summer in the Queenstown Lakes. I hope that while you could be missing loved ones this Christmas, you do take pleasure in knowing you have a wonderful community with which to share your holiday season with in a setting that inspires and rejuvenates. With few exceptions, it’s been a difficult year for Queenstowners and the opportunity to relax, refresh and replenish has been hard earned. The continuing uncertainty around if and when our lives will return to what we remember as normal, has weighed heavy as lockdowns, variants and restrictions seemed to establish themselves in our everyday vocabulary and (limited) movements. While it’s been a difficult time however, there has been much we can been proud of as a district and in looking forward I think it wise to acknowledge some meaningful successes in 2021. Perhaps as a reflection of just how hard COVID-19 has hit our communities, we were the first district in the country to reach 90% vaccination. That we pulled together, got this done and showed the country that we were willing to do what it takes to protect our communities, our visitors and our future economy is something I am extremely proud of. From our local Lions Clubs sizzling sausages on Super Saturday to our medical professionals, schools and businesses, I want to thank everyone for doing their part in getting us to this target. Confidence in the future of Queenstown remains high and can be seen in a wide spectrum of continued investment here. In undoubtedly the most difficult of times for tourism, we’ve seen new hotels developed, restaurants expanding into new premises, our town centre upgrades get underway and a new hospital built at Queenstown Country Club. We’ve been named as one of the top places to visit post-pandemic by Forbes magazine and I’m told that the list of enquiries for conferences and events grows by the day. Of notable mention is the wonderful support that has continued for our communities by the social sector agencies in 2022. The Salvation Army and Happiness House have scaled up their operations admirably and handled a much larger workload than they’ve ever had before. These organisations, along with The Wakatipu Community Foundation, Baskets of Blessings, The Kiwi Kit Community Trust and a large number of others all work incredibly hard for the sole purpose of supporting those that live in our district. With resources and funding stretched at a government level, it’s been a tough job so on behalf of our community I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who volunteer to serve others and lend a helping hand. Your work is enormously appreciated.

Finally, they say that facing difficulties is inevitable but that learning from them is optional. With a huge number of economic diversification and environmental protection and enhancement projects underway, I would say that as a district, we have embraced the opportunities that the pandemic has thrown at us. While it isn’t always easy to see the difficult times as opportunities to reimagine and redirect, we have used the time wisely in focussing on what we want our future to look like. We’re preparing for a more resilient and diversified economy and work force via such initiatives as Te Kakau and supporting many exciting projects in technology, education and Film. Also work on our Destination Management Plan and the Climate Action Plan focuses on ensuring living, working and visiting our district happens in ways that protects the unique environment that makes this place so special.

We don’t know what 2022 will bring, but the past year has shown that in the face of adversity our district pulls together and looks forward. Springsteen Cashes In Bruce Springsteen has sold his entire master recordings and publishing rights to Sony Music for $500M in the largest music deal ever made for a single artist. Thousand Talents Trial
Charles Lieber, the former chair of Harvard University’s chemistry department, went on trial with federal prosecutors alleging he knowingly concealed funding from the Chinese government. The case is one of the highest-profile legal sagas in academic science in recent memory. The charges stem from a wide-ranging FBI probe into China’s Thousand Talents program. Its public purpose is to recruit top researchers, but US officials argue it is used to appropriate foreign research by secretly paying scientists to transmit or recreate the results in Chinese shadow labs. The harshest critics say the program effectively steals state-funded technology and intellectual property for its own economic and military gain. As we step into a New Year do you think back and wonder where the old you went? Do you sometimes feel lost and reflect back on your life through rose tinted glasses? Lockdowns have provided people with some interesting information, whether that’s a decision to leave their current role, move out of the city or even leave their current relationship. What this time of spending so much time together has done is put us all under a microscope.

I’m originally from Auckland, where I worked at Auckland Libraries, but moved down here to the wonderful Wakatipu with my partner in August. I absolutely love it here and finally feel as though I am home among the mountains and lakes, and of course all the lovely Queenstown people.

A colourful woman with a ‘rosy glow’ – Mary Phillips. She’s now one of the Wakatipu’s more colourful characters so it’s fitting that award-winning creative children’s television producerturned florist Mary Phillips has naed her latest venture, The Rosy Glow Project. Mary, a southern-born Kiwi legend in children’s television, is renowned for her bright and positive effervescence and her passion for whatever she’s throwing her boundless energy behind. This time it’s flowers and other creative endeavors which promote joy and well-being. She’s opening up her Gibbston home, 10 at a time, to share her creative flair for picking fresh flowers and turning them into something spectacular. Mary supplies an abundance of fresh cut flowers gathered from local commercial growers, peony farmers and Wanaka’s The Joy Farmer group. She also sources flowers from wonderful local gardeners, including an amazing Gibbston gardener with the best and biggest white irises, and friend Alice Gallaway. “I’ve been lucky enough to have free reign picking in her garden as she has such a beautiful variety of colours of the likes of irises, poppies, lupins and Granny Bonnets,” she says, enthusiastically. Maison Noir, graced by the precious presence of Mary’s British Blue cat Daisy, is the perfect location in which to launch her Rosy Glow workshops which have so far attracted women in the 40 to 70 age group. “The noise in here was unbelievable,” she says. “They’re all enjoying themselves and being creative and joyful.” Participants learn all manner of tricks, including how to make a ‘Tussie Mussie’ used in Victorian times as a perfume to disguise body odour and convey messages. The classes cover some helpful techniques like spiralling and keeping flowers pert and well behaved. “I’ve always, always, always loved flowers and I’ve completed lots of practical sessions both here and overseas” says Mary, who has attained florist qualifications, as well as studying at the Sydney Flower School. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own flowers, large vases and buckets, using Cello Tape to create a grid to keep them in place. “I’m just encouraging people to use flowers from their garden, use local, and be sustainable.” She stands by her ethos with three bee hives on her property. “I’ve just planted a whole lot of lavender. My last honey tasted like wild thyme and clover from the paddocks which was wonderful.”
It’s all a great opportunity to indulge in a new creative bent after more than 30 years writing and producing children’s television programmes. Filming for her latest kids’ show, Code Fun, wound up earlier this year and it was time for a break. Mary’s highly successful Pickled Possum Productions has been turning out great kids’ TV since 2002. Initially a kindergarten teacher in rural Southland, Mary was the creative brains behind TV3’s daily youth show, Sticky TV. Her writing career began with TV3’s innovative preschool show You and Me in 1992. She went on to develop, direct and produce Suzy’s World, the award-winning science show for youngsters, fronted by TV icon Suzy Cato, and has even produced a show for PBS in the United States. Code Fun, the result of more than three years’ work, is now screening on TVNZ. It’s all about IT and learning robotics focusing on coding skills with heaps of music by presenter, songwriter Rozzie Manowitz. The younger sister of southern District Court Judge and former Queenstown lawyer Kevin Phillips, music is another passion of Mary’s, as is seeing children flourish. A Turn Up The Music Charitable Trust trustee, Mary’s super enthusiastic about seeing all young children immersed in the positivity of music, no matter what their home financial situation is. Children’s books are next on the horizon for this fun-loving, slightly cheeky personality, with Daisy the cat and her piano sleeping adventures to be the star of those. “I’m hoping to use a child illustrator as children notice things that we don’t, and they haven’t lost their creative curiosity,” says Mary. In the meantime, she’s got bookings in advance for her Rosy Glow Project with plans to incorporate an e-bike maintenance segment into one early next year. Each four-hour workshop includes a delicious High Tea with club sandwiches from The Club Sandwich Company, cakes on old fashioned cake stands and espresso coffee or tea served in beautiful china. NZ Open drives ahead with 2022 plans by Paul Taylor

Next year’s New Zealand Open is expected to go ahead, potentially with international players, and with three coveted spots at the British Open up for grabs. Organisers of NZ’s premier golfing event have confirmed the 102nd edition will be played at Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort between March 31 and April 3, 2022. Tournament chairman John Hart said the decision comes after overwhelmingly positive support from Millbrook owners the Ishii family, sponsors and partners. And, after discussions with co-sanctioning partners the PGA Tour of Australasia and Asian Tour, Hart is confident a strong international field will be able to attend, if satisfactory options for players to self-isolate are found. “We have had initial conversations with a number of international based players who have indicated that they would be willing to isolate ahead of the tournament if practice facilities were available,” Hart says. Discussions are ongoing with Government. The announcement was made just hours before the first case of the Omicron variant was confirmed in NZ, in Christchurch MIQ, and it remains to be seen how that will affect events going forward. For the first time, the NZ Open has been included in The Open Qualifying Series, which means the top three finishers will gain a place in the field for the 150th playing of The Open at St Andrews in July 2022. Hart said that is “exceptional news” and he believes it will draw more international players to Queenstown in March. Sir Bob Charles became the first Kiwi to win a Major, when he beat American Phil Rodgers to win The Open in 1963. A delighted Sir Bob said: “This great opportunity and I hope that we will see more Kiwis play in this historic event.” The NZ Open is scheduled to be played across 36 holes at Millbrook Resort. The tournament will be broadcast by Sky Sport in New Zealand and through various networks internationally. Queenstown Lakes mayor Jim Boult said losing this year’s tournament to the pandemic was a blow to the sport and the district’s economy. “I applaud the organisers for all their hard work in securing the support of their various sponsors and stakeholders, not least the Ishii family and Millbrook Resort, which will ensure the 2022 event takes place.”

Dishes of warm buttery potatoes and colourful salads and of course the iconic snap of the hostess laying down the Christmas ham in the middle. This is the vision you had in your head when you signed up for Christmas at your place. Reality is, that’s merely a snapshot of calm in the cooking chaos that you’ve signed up for. I too have seen my mother sweat it out in the kitchen on Christmas day and put on a brave face when delivering the leg of ham to the table. What our mothers produce is over the top. They overfeed us! Do we really need 3 dessert options?! A Tiramisu, Trifle and Pav. (Definitely maybe) But it’s our mother’s cooking we’re talking about here. Don’t compare. There’s a couple of angles of attack to soften the impact of Christmas day. First, call on your mother in arms to be your sous chef / mentor in the kitchen. They’ll be more than happy to see someone take the lead. It’ll probably end up being a great bonding experience. A test to see if you could be My Kitchen Rules contestantt. Start creating your grocery list... NOW... don’t wait til the eve of Christmas, leaving it that late will only heighten stress levels. Try new tech advancements like shopping online or scan and bag as you go - these functions allow you to keep a tally on price. Swapping out pricey ingredients for cheaper alternatives could shave down the price. Prep dishes the night before Christmas. Give yourself some breathing room on the big day.
