Coming! Ready or Not! In case you’ve missed the news, effective 15 December, our good friends from Auckland will be able to travel to our part of the world – provided of course that they are either double vaxxed or have presented a negative COVID-19 test. I don’t think there has ever been a time in the history of our district that a visit from Aucklanders means so much. Just to rewind the clock a little and put matters into context, international tourism (pre-COVID) was responsible for around two thirds of the tourism spend in the Queenstown Lakes District. Of the remaining one third, sixty percent came from Auckland. So at the present time, we’ve been operating on effectively thirteen percent of our pre-COVID tourism market. Interestingly enough, I think the occupancy rates reported by hotels and motels and the business levels by activity providers rather reflects about that level. Understandably, while there’s a lot of excitement about the return of the Auckland market pre-Christmas, there’s also some trepidation. COVID-19 is still active in the Auckland area and there is the understandable fear that comes with expecting COVID cases in our part of the world. On the practical side though, COVID is active in other parts of the country which currently have access to our district so while Auckland is a much bigger market, the danger already exists. Are we ready? Well, I think we are as ready as we can be. As I’m writing this I understand that in excess of 94% of our population have been double vaxxed and many of us have done as much as we can to prepare. We’ve discussed contingency plans with the DHB and they will be active in setting up testing stations, in both Queenstown and Wanaka, and getting plenty of messaging out, making it clear to visitors that at the first sign of any symptoms they must be tested and isolating. There’s also some work going on to plan for providing accommodation options for anyone that does test COVID positive while they are here.

We also need to do our bit and make sure we follow all the rules by mask wearing, contact tracing, much handwashing, (remember to sing Happy Birthday while you’re washing your hands! – that’s about the right amount of time to do it effectively) and just generally being aware of your own position. To all the businesses in town, I sincerely hope you have a really busy and fruitful trading period over the summer holidays. To everyone else, I have to say thank goodness 2021 is nearing an end, it hasn’t been a stellar year but we’ve pulled together and supported each other to almost make it through. I’m very much looking forward to a wonderful Christmas and New Year period and a very positive 2022. I wish the same for each and every one of you.

Saturday’s downhill at Skyline was the highlight, with euphoric spectators cheering riders down a special one-off track, combining some of the park’s best DH trails and freshly cut sections.
Kiwi riders Tuhoto-Ariki Pene and Billy Meaclem battled it out in the Men’s Pro final, with 20-year-old Pene bringing the pace and consistency to secure his first Crankworx win.
Local photographer and mountain biker James Allan, who travels to Crankworx Rotorua each year and overseas mountain bike Meccas, says the atmosphere was the best he’s experienced in Queenstown.
Kialani Hines took the women’s race, followed by Caroline Buchanan and young Kiwi rider Jenna Hastings, her fifth podium in a row in her first year of Crankworx pro racing.
“It was like going back to Heckler’s Rock, in Whistler, 10 years ago,” he says.
The multi-stop Crankworx Summer Series has been supported by more than $100,000 in funding from Queenstown Lakes District Council and Central Otago District Council, as well as an undisclosed amount from the $8.5 million Southern Lakes Regional Events Fund.
“We had all the fun parts of that, the best vibe I’ve ever seen at any mountain bike event here. A proper overseas feeling. “You walked up 20 minutes to the track and you could hear the noise up in the trees, the raucous, so everyone came to the same section. “Crate Day helped, riders were stopping mid-run to smash crate bottles back, and it was just a fantastic atmosphere.” Rain in the morning made for difficult riding conditions, with riders covered in mud as they navigated roots, rock gardens and rock rolls, testing even the most seasoned pros and adding to the magic. More than 100 pros, amateurs and junior riders took on the challenge.
The goal is to encourage domestic tourism and promote Central Otago as a destination internationally. Although pandemic restriction prevented many from travelling to this event, it is funded in principle for the next two years, and was broadcast to a global audience via crankworx.com. The next stop on the tour is Cardrona Alpine Resort, for the Air DH, this Thursday, December 9, followed by Bike Glendhu, near Wanaka, on Saturday and Sunday for the dual slalom.
United Kingdom rider Louise Ferguson, who has called Queenstown home for the past two years, pulled off an epic win in the women’s pro category with a time of 3 minutes and 49 seconds. Katy Winton was second, with Casey Brown third. Ferguson’s been crushing it in the Series, also taking gold in the Super D in Alexandra last weekend, but was surprised by her win on the “spicy” DH track. “I actually crashed and by the time I came down I had had a good run, but with the crash I just thought it was going to be a bit of a chiller and all the other girls were going to come down and take the hot seat, but yeah it was good!” Kiwi rider Sam Blenkinsop, who’s been competing professionally for the past 17 years, pulled off the win in the men’s category, finishing in 2mins 41secs, followed by Brook Macdonald and Sam Gale. With the weather rolling in, the race days had been brought forward. A total of 64 riders tackled the new pump track maze at the Kerry Reserve on Friday,

Former Wānaka councillor remembered by Paul Taylor
A former Queenstown Lakes representative is being remembered as a man with great mana after his death on Monday (November 29). Ross McRobie died overnight and the flag at the Waitaki District Council is flying at half mast as a sign of respect for the Ahuriri ward councillor. Ross had spent much of the past week with his wife Petrea and his two children, Emma and James, at his side. Waitaki District Council said Ross’s cancer diagnosis had been made just a couple of months ago and treatment began three weeks ago. “Although Ross stayed optimistic, the extensive nature of the cancers in his body meant that the treatment was too little, too late,” the council said in a statement. Before their move to Otematata in 2019 Ross and Petrea lived in Wānaka for more than a decade, during which he served as both a Wānaka Community Board member and later a Queenstown Lakes councillor. Queenstown Lakes mayor Jim Boult paid tribute to Ross as a hard-working public servant and a much respected individual.
“He was a shining star in our previous council – honest, frank, not afraid to speak his mind and very committed to the best interests of the district,” Jim said. “Very deservedly, Ross will be remembered as a man of great mana. He was an excellent councillor and a very good friend. I will miss his positive outlook and enthusiasm for life greatly.” During his time at QLDC, Ross worked on many committees but it was his work as chair of the 2018-2028 Ten Year Plan steering group that he was most proud of. Jim said on leaving council Ross had said the work of the steering group was his biggest achievement and it would be transformational for the district and its residents. Wānaka-based councillor Quentin Smith told the Wānaka App he was saddened to learn of Ross’s death and he would remember him fondly. “I was privileged to serve with Ross last term and enjoyed the regular drives over the Crown Range; the long talks that allowed. He was always thoughtful and generous with his time. “His dedication to community service is self-evident and he will be sorely missed by the Wānaka Community and his community in the Waitaki.” Outside local government, Ross was a chartered accountant for more than 30 years, an accredited chartered member of the NZ Institute of Directors, and a business coach and mentor. He held a number of governance roles with organisations including the New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand on Air, Snow Sports NZ and Warbirds over Wānaka and he was a previous chair of Lake Wānaka Tourism, Wānaka Wastebusters and Otago Community Trust. In his brief time with Waitaki District Council he had made a strong mark, mayor Gary Kircher said. “Ross was a very outgoing person and an awesome Councillor for the Ahuriri Ward and the Waitaki district. “I know that my fellow elected members and the many staff who knew Ross will truly miss his analytical decision-making, his energetic personality and the great banter he brought with him.”

Christmas has come early for dozens of community groups across Queenstown and Central Otago. The Central Lakes Trust (CLT) is dishing out more than $1 million in its latest round of grants, while the Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group has chosen 25 organisations to receive up to $1000 each. CLT grants include $150,000 for LUMA Southern Light Project over the next three years, $60,000 to help renovate Queenstown Bowls Club’s facility, and $9,500 towards the Lake Hayes A&P Show 2022, which has since been cancelled due to Covid restrictions. LUMA chair Duncan Forsyth says the funding will help the popular light, art and performance event, held over Queen’s Birthday Weekend, towards financial sustainability. “We have been actively planning our own sustainability since LUMA’s inception and since CLT first came on board as a funder,” he says. “Last year was the first year we charged an entrance fee, which was very successful. Security of a three-year grant with reduced funding per year, enables us to live up to our plan, and we are very grateful to the Trust for their support over the years.”

Queenstown groups The Kiwi Kit Community Trust (TKKCT) and Mana Tahuna, who’ve helped the community through the pandemic, will benefit from CLT funding for the time. TKKCT has been operating for just over a year, supporting and connecting migrants through events and ongoing programmes. It will receive almost $9,000 a year for three years. Kelsey Powell of TKKCT says: “The grant will enable us to bridge the gap between migrants and the wider community. “We aim to be a safe space for migrants to share their voices as well as a culturally-appropriate conduit for organisations, business, and government agencies seeking access to the migrant community.” Mana Tahuna was created to support for local Māori and help unite the Māori community in Queenstown and the neighbouring areas, especially in youth service, health and social services, and employment. Post-Covid the group was providing 170 food packs a week, but this has now reduced to about 60.

Adele is headed to Las Vegas. The “Easy on Me” singer tweeted about the residency on Tuesday. The singer, who released her album “30” this month, tweeted on Wednesday last week that she’ll be starting a residency in 2022 called “Weekends With Adele.” The residency is slated to run from January to April, according to an image included in the tweet. The first show is scheduled for Jan. 21. The final show is scheduled for April 16. Tickets will go on pre-sale in early December. Sex in the City sequel ‘And Just Like That’ Full trailers released HBO Max has released a full trailer — shoes included — for its Sex in the City follow-up ‘And Just Like That’. After a brief teaser that dropped earlier in November, the Warner Media streaming service is offering up a longer look at the series, which premieres Dec. 9 in the US. The trailer features several callbacks to the original series, including Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) voiceover narration, Carrie staring lovingly at a closet full of expensive shoes, and shots of the returning cast, while also emphasizing the changes that have taken place in the 11 years since the second Sex in the City feature film. POLITICS Leftist wins Honduran presidential vote after rival concedes The Honduras’ ruling party conceded defeat Tuesday last week in presidential elections, giving victory to leftist opposition candidate Xiomara Castro and easing fears of another contested vote and violent protests. Tegucigalpa Mayor Nasry Asfura, presidential candidate of the National Party, said in a statement that he had personally congratulated Castro, despite only about half the voting tallies being counted from Sunday’s election. The former first lady had 53% of the votes and Asfura 34%, with 52% of the tallies counted, according to the National Electoral Council. Asfura said he had met with Castro and her family. “Now I want to say it publicly,” the conservative candidate said. “That I congratulate her for her victory and as president elect, I hope that God illuminates and guides her so that her administration does the best for the benefit of all of us Hondurans, to achieve development and the desire for democracy.” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Castro minutes later. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Life is so unfair - not only do I have tiny, fair, almost invisible pig bristles for eyelashes, but now they are rebelling and deciding to grow inwards towards my eyeball. If they were irritating before, when they were just plain boring, they are now (^&!!^&****) what is technically known as “recalcitrant” - it means obstinantly uncooperative towards authority. To punish them, I take myself to Ocula where lovely Taren deals to them gently with me, and cruelly to them. I sat on a plane once next to a very beautiful Indian woman who had eyelashes so thick and dark and lush that I couldn’t stop staring at them. Finally, I asked her if they were real, and when she said yes, I told her how incredibly envious I was. She told me not to be jealous - apparently you don’t get long dark hair in just one place, and she spends a huge amount of time having the recalcitrant excess hair on the rest of her body removed. I still want those eyelashes. I also want the government to start thinking about the small businesses. I just heard that employers who have to let unvaccinated staff go and have to give them four weeks pay - I can’t even believe this is true. If there isn’t enough stress on all the business owners in Queenstown already, this is just one more ridiculous burden. Grant Robertson was saying the other day that he’s so impressed that 90% of the country have been vaccinated now, and it shows what a terrific job the govt has done of getting 90% of NZ to agree on something. In fact, the vast majority of NZ parents agree that vaccination of their children is essential, given that 90% of 1 year olds have had the standard childhood vaccines and I’m guessing the other 10% are the same ones who are against the Covid jab. My vegetables need protection too. I’m torn between letting the birds eat them and wanting them myself. It’s especially hard with the quail - they are just so comical and I can’t seem to get angry with them when every seedling that bravely shows its tiny green head above the ground, gets pecked to extinction. It’s time to get tough and put the ugly nets on, but somehow the greedy blackbirds that I don’t love, always manage to get in. Isn’t it a pity that the birds can’t focus on eating thistles and docks, of which there are always a surplus. Some very good BIRDIES are the Jo Booker team of golf girls who are going to do the Cancer Society’s LONGEST DAY playing 72 holes of golf around the Wakatipu on December 21st. Uncertain outlook continues by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s Chamber of Commerce plans another impromptu survey this week as the sands shift under the town’s tourism operators. Some 228 businesses responded to the Chamber’s quarterly Business Confidence survey at the end of November, but since then the Government has announced the borders won’t open to international travellers until April 30, and they’ll need to self-isolate for seven days. There’s also been the rise of the Omicron variant, although the impact of that is not yet known, and it could even signal the end of pandemic, being more transmissible but less harmful. Chamber boss Ruth Stokes says: “The wage subsidy is also coming to an end, so we want to get an idea of the level of impact.” Some 378 business responded to the first quarterly survey in February, followed by 101 and 69 in May and August respectively, impacted by the sudden shift to Alert Level Four, before numbers bounced back for the fourth quarter. “The November report confirmed what we’ve been saying all year, that this is a tale of two cities,” Stokes says. “People’s level of confidence, both in their own business, and the district, and New Zealand, is shaped by the industry in which they operate. “It’s like polar opposites when you look at tourism and other industries. There must be an awful lot of people thinking positively for it to on average come out fairly positively.” Of the 228 responses, 109 were associated with the visitor economy, with the others spread across professional, scientific and technical services, construction etc. “Some of those have done incredibly well.” Across all sectors, however, there was the consistent theme that it is very difficult to find staff. “The Lakes Weekly Bulletin snapshot about people changing jobs aligns with what we’re hearing. “The wage inflation means there’s a lot of opportunity for people to move on, and why wouldn’t you. And it’s not just here, the primary sector is also having huge issues.” For the visitor economy, demand obviously remains the main problem. “That continues, unfortunately, even if we do get 2,000 people here from Auckland on 15th December, which is what we’re hearing.” Only five per cent of respondents believe their business won’t be able to continue in the next three months, compared to 16% in February.

The South Island’s biggest New Year’s festival is set to go ahead, despite Covid-19 vaccine pass restrictions. Three-day music and camping festival Rhythm & Alps is scheduled to take place in Cardrona Valley, between Queenstown and Wanaka, from December 29 to 31. More than 10,000 people will be onsite during the festival, including 6,000 campers. Just over 40% are from outside the region. Last week, R&A’s North Island counterpart Rhythm and Vines cancelled its NYE plans, postponing until Easter, and two weeks ago Queenstown Lakes District Council cancelled its planned NYE fireworks and music in Queenstown and Wanaka. But R&A festival director Alex Turnbull says his team and booking agent Ticket Fairy has worked together to ensure the festival complies with public health measures. “Our ticketing partner has already integrated the new vaccine passport technology,” Turnbull says. “Each festival ticket holder will easily be able to upload their vaccine pass to their Ticket Fairy account. Once verified, this then marks their ticket as valid at the gate for entry. “To do this, all festival attendees must log in prior to arriving at Rhythm & Alps and connect their vaccine passports. The ticket scanning system will show their vaccine status alongside their usual ticket status, without needing to scan both the ticket and the passport separately. “We are confident this is a secure and simple way to apply vaccine passports to festivals and clear instructions will be sent to all customers within the next few days, with ongoing reminders throughout December.” Turnbull says the Southern DHB, Police, Ministry of Health and Queenstown Lakes District Council have been consulted via a collaborative desktop exercise and all are confident with Rhythm & Alps management to proceed in an orange traffic light level. There will also be R&A Covid ambassadors and extra customer service to help all attendees enter the site as easily, quickly and safely as possible. Performances from FILTH, KORA, L.A.B, LEE MVTTHEWS, MONTELL2099, MUROKI, PAIGE JULIA, SALMONELLA DUB FEAT. TIKI TAANE, SCRIBE & P MONEY, SHAPESHIFTER AND MORE are scheduled across the three days and four stages.
The full 2021 festival stage schedule and lineup being announced this Friday, December 10th. There are still Three-Day Camping, Two-Day Camping, Two-Day GA, 30th Dec Single Day tickets available, but all other ticket types have sold out. Meanwhile, the smaller King Beats Charity Music Festival is also pushing ahead with plans for its Kingston Valley event, set for Saturday, February 19, 2022. The BYO event, which includes on-site camping, has announced its line up. Indie-rock 5 piece The Butlers, Ribera (Electric Rush), Sinclair, Zoo Brothers & Lenni Vibes, Ben Lock, Joey Mac & Jack Summersides will all perform, with more to be announcement early next year. King Beats founder Brendan Malcahy said: “It’s been hard navigating the event in a Covid filled world, but this is our last year with consent so we decided to bite the bullet and push forward to deliver another memorable event,. “It’s always been about the community and impact we can make for the charities so if we can keep dancing for a purpose we will.” This year the event’s profits will be donated to Garston Primary School, Central Lakes Family Services and QMTBC. INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY International Volunteer Day is celebrated every year on 5 December. This day is set aside to recognize and support the spirit of volunteerism and through the act of volunteering help create a better future. At the start of the pandemic volunteer numbers initially fell, younger volunteers however stepped up to fill the gap. Many is the region have helped others in generous, collaborative and innovative ways.

Recognising and promoting volunteerism is an important part of creating a more equal and inclusive future for communities and worldwide. Volunteers South takes a leading role in putting people and organisations together. It also champions the impact volunteers have in communities. Louise Clark is one such local volunteer, this is her story. Louise shares: “When I joined in September, there were a huge amount of people with visa issues. I had already navigated the whole process and there were ways I could help and advise.”

Sometimes it is simply explaining INZ policy and other times it involves delving into people’s context to help them during her shifts at CAB. Many times Louise is able to rely on her own lived experience, but sometimes: “I genuinely haven’t a clue how to help them.” “A lot of people would be put off by the idea that they don’t have the skills, but the volunteers on a learning curve all play to our strengths and rely on each other. The permanent people are brilliant fonts of knowledge. If they don’t know the answer, they know where to start looking. And that’s all that is needed to then work with the client and develop a plan of action.” Soon Louise realized that her efforts to help others were helping her as well. “Solving a problem or helping someone solve a problem, I gained an appreciation for both the problems I had and that I was doing a little bit of good.” Since returning to full-time employment, Louise has still managed to fit in time to help due to the flexibility that both her employer and Citizens Advice provides. Imagine confronting an employment, immigration, legal, consumer or tenancy concern on your own. Now imagine doing so with the help of experienced, knowledgeable and empathetic volunteers. You can feel the muscles in your shoulders relax at the thought of caring assistance as you navigate unfamiliar territory. Recognizing that her own life experience moving to New Zealand from Ireland could benefit others confronting Immigration New Zealand requirements for the first time is what inspired Louise Clarke to begin volunteering with Queenstown Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB.) Like many in COVID-impacted Queenstown last year, Louise found herself out of work as a Civil Design Engineer, missing family abroad and feeling low. “A friend suggested that I volunteer and I replied that it wasn’t my thing. After a day of contemplation, I realized I didn’t have a valid answer as to why and headed to the Volunteer South website to browse the open roles.” That’s when she knew that she had something to give to Queenstown CAB, who empower clients with information so that they know and understand their rights and obligations through services such as migrant information sessions, legal clinics, JP services, and employment, tenancy and consumer advocacy.
What would Louise say to others considering volunteering? “There are lots of different options. Everyone can find the way that works for you. Once you do, it’s pretty awesome.” And in terms of incorporating volunteering into a busy life? “I think you’d be surprised how it’s not a major commitment and you can find a way of fitting it into your normal life. When you make it work, it is definitely rewarding.”

Arts+Culture Christmas Soul by Bethany Rogers Local soul choir Southern Soul are back this Christmas with a range of musical numbers sung and performed by some of the best singers and performers in the region. The event will be the Arrowtown Creative Art Society’s (ACAS) final concert of 2021. Held at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on 11th December, organiser Margaret O’Hanlon promises another incredible show – an “a capella choral mash-up” performed in the round. “We’re singing a mixture of contemporary and traditional songs. “We’ve got Celtic harpist Katie TargettAdams, who’s new to Queenstown and a star in her own right in Hong Kong. She’ll be playing some traditional Celtic music on the harp and singing. She features in a broad range of songs and is absolutely brilliant. “Then we have Emma Pullar, whom most people will know, she’s a strong community person. She’s in the Lynch Mob band and has been the lead in many of our Showbiz shows. “Natasha Wilson is our choirmaster, she’s been part of Turn Up the Music for quite some time, and she’s the founder of Southern Soul. She’ll sing solo and we’ll be performing a song she’s composed for all of us ex-pats who have our season upside down. It’s called ‘Mulled Wine in May’.” Also singing will be Teegs Stallard, Brody Patterson, Dini Siddick, Siobhan Hope and Michelle Moynes. Pianist Lizzy Green and cellist Lara Lavadure will accompany. Gospel songs, Christmas music, music from Adele, Queen, Lorde and even music from the film Django Unchained will feature in the show. The Athenaeum will be arranged in tables for the evening and the choir will sing around the audience.
“We won’t be using the stage. We’ve changed the perspective a little bit. The main performance area will be in that little side area that sits adjacent to the Supper Room and at other points, we’ll sing around the audience. That little area has proven to be a natural little amphitheatre. I think it’s caused by the lower ceiling there and it’s really quite amazing. The acoustics are lovely. “That was something I’d never expected, it was a surprise. But now we’re using it and it’s absolutely beautiful for choral music.” Ticket are available from Arrowtown Pharmacy and Eventfinda. Working out of Cromwell, Deidre Copeland is one of New Zealand’s premier portrait painters.
Contemporary art space Broker will unveil its latest group exhibition at an opening reception on 7th December. The exhibition will run until 21st January and includes new works by artists Bonco, Chris Pole, Elliot Collins, Grant Whibley, Holly Schröder, James R Ford, Jessica Winchcombe, Jonas Hansen, Marc Blake, Rhea Maheshwari and Sarah Bultitude.
The artworks she produce echoes her curiosity with the human face and the intriguing lives and stories behind them. Deidre has won many major art awards and her work is featured across the country. She has painted many famous faces including Sir Tim Shadbolt, Mark Todd, Sir Richard Hadley, AJ Hackett, Sir Michael Hill, Sir Edmond Hilary, Gary McCormick and Dame Whina Cooper. Shape Shifting is the latest exhibition from Deidre which is running until December 10th at the Hullabaloo art space, Melmore Terrace, Cromwell Historic Precinct. The exhibition is a stunning mix of paintings, drawings, limited edition etchings, and calendars. It has something for everyone!

Fiona Pardington’s New Series Tarota Offers Up Mystery A moody and mysterious exhibition has just opened in Earl Street at Starkwhite Queenstown. Titled Tarota, it is the new still life series by celebrated Ngāi Tahu artist Fiona Pardington. Named for the deck of divinatory cards and their ancient archetypal symbols, Tarota is Pardington’s exploration of her own visual vocabulary of private and mystical symbolism. Set upon a marble slab, which features at the forefront of and links each of the photographs in the series, a collection of objects and unusual items form elegant compositions. Emerging from velvety black backgrounds, carefully chosen collections of items and a muted palette creates an intense psychological space. This new body of work was developed after the artist’s research trip to the Queenstown-Lakes district in early 2021. Speaking about the photographs Pardington comments “As a Ngāi Tahu artist I feel a very real connection to this part of the world. On my father’s side I whakapapa back to Bluff, Arahura, and Moeraki, and have often incorporated items found or foraged from the wider region in my work. I spent several months in Kingston as an artist-in-residence in the early 2000s and Dunedin before that, both of these experiences were really formative times for my artistic practice. In fact, I’ve recently moved back to Te Waipounamu.” It is often said Fiona Pardington is a metaphysical photographer, looking deeper to discover what transcends the physical and ephemeral plane right in front of us. Each photograph in the Tarota series contains its own unique language of symbols, like a tarot card. Some can, with a little effort, can be guessed at. Others are private and known only to the artist herself, relating to family, friends, or lovers. Each item is charged with memory. Sitting in a space between European esotericism, Māori tikanga, and Pardington’s own unique artistic vision Tarota is a rich and immersive experience. Fiona Pardington’s practice is renowned for the way in which it celebrates taonga of the natural and cultural world. Previous works have brought items hidden away in museum collections – including some of our most revered native birds such as the extinct huia – back into our world, or incorporated indigenous plants. Her new series continues this practice, but offers a twist. “You’ll see both natural objects like rocks from the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu and the Dart River as well as items I found in Queenstown’s magnificent op-shops crop up in the Tarota series” Pardington reveals. “I spend hours combing through op-shops for unusual pieces wherever I am in the world, I’m very attracted to such places. I’ve painted or dipped a lot of the objects then drawn and written on some of them for Tarota. One of the vases has ‘kia rere’ or ‘I release’ written again and again on it, a beautiful karakia.” Art lovers can see all eight images from Fiona Pardington’s Tarota series and an essay by Andrew Paul Wood at the Starkwhite website: starkwhite.co.nz The Rees Hotel will also be hosting several works by Fiona Pardington in their foyer and conference room.

Five Mile hotel to open before Christmas by Paul Taylor

There is dedicated storage for bikes and ski equipment and plenty of free parking. It is built to a high standard to ensure certification to carboNZero as soon as possible after opening. Sudima Hotels is a signatory to the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative. “We are committed to reducing waste and eliminating plastic items we do not need and to strongly encouraging our supply chain to adopt similar practices. We have won numerous awards for our sustainability initiatives including the Environmental and Supreme Awards at the New Zealand Tourism Awards.” Sudima Hotels is owned and managed by Auckland-based entrepreneur and property investor Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala. A new 120-room hotel is set to open in Queenstown on December 23. The 4.5 star Sudima Queenstown Five Mile is already well known to locals, who’ve watched it being built in a prominent position in one of the town’s most popular shopping areas, close to SH6.
Current locations include Auckland Airport, Auckland City, Rotorua, Christchurch Airport, Christchurch City and now Queenstown, with Kaikōura set to open in spring 2022.
It is the seventh Sudima Hotels property in the group’s portfolio, following the recent opening of Sudima Auckland City. Sudima Kaikōura is due to open spring 2022. Sudima Hotels boss Les Morgan says: “Our borders might still be closed but New Zealand is open for business, and we are dedicated to ensuring New Zealand’s tourism market has great products for our current domestic market and for future growth. “We have already seen increased interest and bookings for December, January and February. Kiwis are wanting to travel to Queenstown as soon as they are able, which shows that local tourism is very important. “Our new hotel will be a home away from home for New Zealanders and adds to our vision of delivering the most accessible and environmentally friendly hotels in key locations throughout the country.” The hotel’s location makes it attractive to leisure, business and conference travellers alike, Morgan says. “Not only is Queenstown a popular holiday destination but it is also very popular for conferences and events.

New Zealand Open chairman John Hart says it’s unlikely international players will tee-off at Millbrook early next year due to Covid restrictions. Arrowtown is due to host the country’s premier golf tournament from March 31 and April 3, 2022. And while the Open is on the Government Approved event list, making it possible for some international players to attend, the need to self-isolate for seven days without access to practice facilities will likely keep them away. “We believe that it will be very difficult to convince foreign national professionals to take an extra week out of their playing schedule, particularly at a time when other tournaments around the world are getting back to a more normal situation,” Tournament chairman John Hart said. “In all probability our only option will be to run a tournament that mainly features Kiwis, and we are delighted that a number of New Zealand’s leading professionals, including Ryan Fox, Mike Hendry, Josh Geary and others have signalled their support for the event, regardless of format. “Our process will now be to consult with our tour partners, international players, amateurs, sponsors and other key funding agencies to ascertain what might be possible, and indeed, if we are able to run a financially viable and high quality event.” A further announcement on the future of the 102nd New Zealand Open and its playing format will be made within the next few weeks.

Hart said it is fully committed to holding the tournament and is determined to do everything possible to stage it, particularly to provide a boost to the hard-hit region and promote NZ tourism.
Following the Government’s announcement of its updated policy regarding border openings and visitation for early 2022, the organising committee met to discuss the implications for the tournament.
The New Zealand Open, scheduled to be played across 36 holes at Millbrook Resort, will be broadcast by Sky Sport in New Zealand and through various networks internationally.

THE PLATFORM The concept of “The Platform” is undeniably clever. Almost the entire film takes place in a sort of futuristic or Camus-esque structure called “The Hole.” Hundreds of floors tall, it is a prison in which people are placed on floors two at a time. Every day, a platform descends through a large hole in the middle of the building, and it’s the only chance for food for the entire day. On level 1, the prisoners have access to a feast of lovingly prepared dishes. If everyone only ate a small ration, it could make it all the way to the bottom with something for each prisoner. It never does. Our eyes into this nightmare belong to Goreng (Ivan Massagué), who volunteered to enter the prison to quit smoking and read a book (everyone is allowed one item), without fully understanding what he was in for. His first cellmate explains the process of The Hole to Goreng as the film opens on level 48. By that time, there are usually some leftovers on the platform. But the evilest part of this system, and arguably the film’s most clever societal insight, is that inmates change floors every month.

HISTORY OF SWEAR WORDS Informationally, History of Swear Words is sturdy, debunking various urban legends about word origins — “shit,” for example, is not a transportation acronym for “Ship High In Transit” — and examining certain words with bifurcated meanings, some naughty and some distinctly less-so. Kory Stamper, a lexicographer and Merriam-Webster dictionary consultant, is probably the breakout among the expert talking heads, relishing this strange opportunity, though Melissa Mohr and Mireille Miller-Young, who both have academic backgrounds in things you might not have guessed one could specialize in as an academic, have enlightening moments as well. The Beatles: Get Back review Peter Jackson’s TV series is a thrilling, funny (and long) treat for fans

The Beatles’ Get Back project, undertaken in January 1969, has finally been completed. Again. For most of the last 50 years it has been known as Let it Be, a film and LP record released in 1970. The project, conceived by Paul McCartney, was originally intended to be a television special documenting the band’s preparation for a live concert (their first in two and a half years). Because of the performance element, the Beatles decided to get back to their roots and only develop material that could be played without adding overdubs. As it happened, the concert didn’t go ahead, the Beatles famously deciding instead to play a short unannounced gig on the roof of their headquarters. The TV special became a feature film, and the audio was handed over to the “wall of sound” producer, Phil Spector (leading to controversial results). Meanwhile, in the early 1980s, the Beatles withdrew the film version (a fly-on-the-wall documentary directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg) from circulation. Lindsay-Hogg’s Let it Be is remembered as a portrait of a band in the process of breaking up. And indeed, George Harrison did briefly quit the band early into the four-week project, though Lindsay-Hogg’s documentary does not cover this episode. Let it Be was seen as a downer in part because the Beatles, especially Lennon, were keen to trash it in the light of the band’s breakup (which occurred just weeks before the release of Let it Be, both film and album). As Lennon said in December 1970, the shoot was “hell”, and Spector was “given the shittiest load of badly recorded shit”.
A different tenor While the newly released The Beatles: Get Back, directed by Peter Jackson, covers Harrison’s departure and return, Jackson’s film is tonally different from Lindsay-Hogg’s. According to Jackson, the dour account of Let it Be is inaccurate, since there is much “joy” and friendship evident in the 60 hours of film and 150 hours of audio tape that has been sitting in a vault for half a century. Much of this audio has long been available as bootlegs, informing written accounts of this period of the Beatles’ history. The audio without the video, however, doesn’t always tell the whole story.
The Apple studio is clearly more pleasant, and the tone is further lightened when the Beatles are joined by an outsider, their old friend Billy Preston, on keyboards (a crucial moment for the project). There is nevertheless something of a hermetic feel to most of Get Back, so that when the Beatles and Preston head up to the rooftop to play in public – the cinematic “payoff” that the band and Lindsay-Hogg had been looking for throughout the project – there is a palpable sense of release. And the famous rooftop concert, presented with creative use of split screen, is stunningly good (and is also, for the first time, presented in its 42-minute entirety). After the countless run throughs and takes of the same songs over the preceding weeks (as well as numerous covers and early Beatles tunes), the sense of energy and the quality of playing gives the film the climactic moment that it needs, complete with police officers demanding, albeit politely, that the Beatles stop breaching the peace of London’s West End.
Cigarettes, cups of tea, and white bread Get Back is very different from Let it Be in part due to Jackson’s editing, especially his use of montage, which produces a dynamic, sometimes frenetic, energy. Beyond these stylistic elements, Get Back is notable as a technical feat. It looks and sounds astonishingly good, not something that was ever said about Let it Be. Jackson and his technical team have employed the kind of film restoration techniques used in his war documentary They Shall Not Grow Old (2018). The vision in Get Back is beautifully saturated, sharp, and less grainy than LindsayHogg’s film. Harrison and Starr, in their sartorial splendour, often resemble their cartoon equivalents from Yellow Submarine (1968). If there is anything unvarnished about Jackson’s film it is the sight of people apparently living off cigarettes, cups of tea, and white bread. Also notably “historical” is the homosocial nature of the project; almost all of the active participants are men. Even Yoko Ono, who sits beside Lennon throughout, is almost entirely silent (save for her vocal participation in a couple of impromptu jams).
While Jackson and his team haven’t shied away from the moments of friction, ennui, and aimlessness experienced by the band, the tenor of Get Back is more upbeat than Lindsay-Hogg’s version (though there is perhaps more levity in that film than Jackson or its reputation allows).
While the film has been painstakingly restored, the soundtrack has been almost remade. Much of the audio was recorded on mono quarter-inch tape. Jackson’s technical team used machine learning to effectively “remix” these mono tapes, allowing Jackson to hone in on individual voices masked by other sound sources (voices or musical instruments).
But Get Back is not just a recut of Let it Be; it is a documentary in its own right, a film about the making of a film. Lindsay-Hogg is now a character in the drama of trying to work out what the project is about, and how it will end.
This is an extraordinary technological breakthrough, allowing key conversations to be heard properly for the first time, and for the remixing of the play throughs and rehearsals of songs, which weren’t being recorded as “takes” on the eight-track system.
Unlike the cinema verité style of Let it Be, Get Back gives much-needed context in the form of titles naming the protagonists and songs, as well as explaining what is happening. The use of a day-by-day countdown to the live performance gives the otherwise shapeless events a sense of narrative and even tension.
Get Back is a treat for any Beatles fan. It’s a reminder, too, if one is needed, that some classic songs were recorded for the project. (Given that McCartney supplied at least three of these classics – Let it Be, The Long and Winding Road, and Get Back – it’s unsurprising that he has long been unsatisfied with the way they were originally showcased.)
Get Back was to be a feature film with a theatrical release, but COVID-19 led to a rescheduling and reconceptualising of the work, so that it became a documentary for Disney+. Recent reports were that the series would be a three-part series with a six-hour running time.
The climactic rooftop concert As it turns out, that running time is closer to eight hours. (Let it Be is a mere 80 minutes long.) Almost all of these eight hours show the Beatles at work on a sound stage (at Twickenham Film Studios) or in an ad hoc recording studio (put together in the Beatles’ Apple headquarters, when – after Harrison’s walkout – it was decided that Twickenham wasn’t conducive to creativity).
But Jackson’s film isn’t all sweetness and light. Lennon, for instance, is dismissive of Harrison’s I, Me, Mine, and he makes a throwaway joke about Bob Wooler, a Liverpool disc jockey whom Lennon assaulted in 1963. Also notable is the relative absence of George Martin, who largely hands production duties to his sound engineer, Glyn Johns, surely a sign that Martin found something amiss with the project. And indeed numerous sequences show a band lacking focus and discipline. Get Back, then, is unquestionably a mixed bag: thrilling, compelling, and funny, but also sometimes just a little boring. In this, Jackson has been true to the original project. His extraordinary TV series is essential viewing for anyone interested in popular music.
