Queenstown faces an ongoing crisis with current border approach What a difference two days can make. On Friday there was near universal outrage at the Government’s decision around a slow, staged re-opening of the international border. Also, on Friday no-one had heard of the word Omicron, the name of the new and potentially more virulent variant of Covid. The speed with which the variant has made its way from Africa to Europe and Australia is astounding and we’ve yet to see the effectiveness of the vaccines against it. Equally fast has been the government response in those countries in cutting ﬂights and re-imposing self-isolation for arrivals. All sensible precautions while epidemiologists learn more. It’s starting to look like our Government’s approach to re-opening might be sensible. However, the countries who have already opened up have said their new precautions are temporary while they understand more about Omicron. Their commitment to moving forward to living with this virus and remaining connected to the world, remains. We should be doing the same. Tourism has historically been one of New Zealand’s biggest income earners and is going to be a non-starter under the current policy. Australia recognises it has to live with the virus and remain open to the rest of the world and, while currently slightly ahead of NZ for the proportion of their total population who are double vaccinated, they will soon be able to travel to places like Bali, Hawaii, Fiji and Singapore. However, they won’t be able to come to Queenstown until 30 April next year, and even then, they will have to stay in self-isolation for seven days. No Australian family will spend a week of their precious hard-earned holiday isolating for 7 days in NZ, when they can travel without restriction elsewhere. It will be the same for visitors from other countries, except those coming to see family. NZ’s tourism industry, particularly in Queenstown, therefore faces an existential crisis. The Government is sending a signal to the world and tourism industry that despite our high vaccination rates, NZ will remain functionally closed to international tourists for a long time to come. The intent is caution and getting NZ back on its domestic travel feet before opening up internationally but the framework will not just affect the next 5 months, it will affect the ski season and beyond in our region. The situation is precarious for many local tourism businesses who have managed to hang on since the pandemic began, but are now giving up as other parts of the world reopen and our country shows no sign of doing so for a very long time to come. The income earned from tourism these businesses desperately need, but also the country desperately needs. We need to have a better plan and a faster response allowing fully vaccinated and tested Australians back to Queenstown must be a crucial part of that plan. David Gibbs Queenstown Media Group

Queenstown’s White + Wong’s wins Restaurant of the Year by Paul Taylor

Queenstown’s “little gem” White + Wong’s has won Hospitality New Zealand’s Restaurant of the Year. The popular Asian fusion restaurant on Lower Beach Street took the category win at an event in Wellington last Tuesday, which was streamed around the country.

He also acknowledged the team behind the scenes. “There’s a lot of work and effort that goes into creating a brand and a wellexecuted restaurant and it includes a lot of different stakeholders. As well as the staff, you’ve got passionate shareholders who are very involved in the creation of the brand, the menu, and the fit out. “So, it’s a number of people who come together who share a vision around a modern Asian fusion restaurant.” The Queenstown restaurant has been well supported by locals and domestic tourists since the international borders closed. “As the borders reopen progressively from January onwards, that will be great for everybody . . . and if we get do some al fresco dining out the front of White + Wong’s in Beach Street, the pain of the improvement works will be worth it,” Gray added. QT Auckland hotel in the Viaduct Harbour won the Supreme Award at the 2021 Lion Hospitality Awards for Excellence at the awards, which recognised NZ’s top accommodation, food and beverage performers across 17 categories. White + Wongs was the only local winner, although other local finalists included Hop on Hop off Wine Tours Ltd and Margo’s in the Best New/ Redeveloped Business – Food & Beverage; Perky’s Floating Bar in the Best Destination Venue; Sofitel Queenstown - Hotel & Spa in the Best Luxury Hotel; and Erik’s Fish and Chips for Excellence in Marketing.

It beat fellow Queenstown Lakes finalist Francesca’s Italian Kitchen, in Wanaka, along with Wellington’s Artisan at Bolton Hotel, The Press Club, Dunedin, and Fife Lane Kitchen and Bar, Tauranga. Good Group director and CEO Russell Gray says: “It’s an acknowledgment of a really good all-round team performance that continues to excel and deliver on the amazing brand that is White & Wong’s, that has found favour with the market. “I’m delighted that the judging panel has gone right through New Zealand and has chosen our little gem. That’s an amazing accolade.” Good Group opened the first White + Wong’s in Auckland’s The Viaduct in 2016. Queenstown opened in 2017, followed by Newmarket in Auckland in 2018. Queenstown’s team of 35 is led by head chef Benjamin Moon and the venue manager Alex Suter. Gray says the secret to a great restaurant is finding the right combination of menu, fit out, lighting, music, and staff, that makes diners excited to be there. “You want staff that are very knowledgeable and comfortable interacting with customers to make sure they have a premium fun dining experience, backed by a very capable chef and kitchen team that can execute well with the South East Asian flavours of the menu.”

Arts+Culture Art union exhibition now on by Bethany Rogers “It’s raising funds for the museum, they take 30% commission and some of the artists offer the entire proceeds to the museum. “It’s also for the local artists who don’t have their own galleries. It’s an outlet for them (commercial galleries take a lot more than 30% commission), so that’s pretty cool. “And the other thing is that because of everything that has been going on, the museum is behind on its bookings. There’s the Italian artists who haven’t been able to come, the high school’s show would normally be there but it had to be cancelled. We’re filling that gallery space. “So it’s a three-pronged thing.” Paul says last year’s art union exhibition and the following 30x30 exhibition, where well-known locals submitted artwork 30cm by 30cm in size to be sold at auction, raised almost $40,000 for the museum. “The museum did end up getting a grant for the strengthening work, but there’s a whole load of display work that needs to be re-done and that’s what this funding goes towards. This year, money raised from the sale of the artwork will also go towards protecting and strengthening another iconic local building – the police station near the Chinese Village in Arrowtown.” Last year, we joked that it was the world’s first art exhibition and after another ‘interesting’ year, the popular art union exhibition is back. A collaboration between the Lakes District Museum, the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society (ACAS) and artists from across Otago, the exhibition showcases regional art and raises funds for the museum. Held in the Lakes District Museum’s gallery space, last year’s show opening was the first major art event in the region after the drop in alert levels. With its huge range of art photography, fine art, sculpture and an art auction, the show was a hit and raised funds for the museum’s earthquake strengthening project. ACAS’s Paul Rae says it was an opportunity to get out, buy some art and support the museum. The popularity of the event has prompted the team to run the show again this year, running 25th November 2021 – 6th March 2022.

All of the artwork in the art union exhibition will be for sale. There’s a wide range of different styles and mediums in the show and well-known artists like David John, Graham Brindsley, Ben Ho and Jenny Mehrtens will showcase some of their latest works. “We also have some first-time exhibitors and artists from across Central Otago,” says Paul. “There’s a range of sizes, styles and mediums, and I think it’ll be every bit as good as the art union last year. Working out of Cromwell, Deidre Copeland is one of New Zealand’s premier portrait painters.

Untitled/ The Prophecy by Dakar, Senegal-based photographer and visual artist Fabrice Monteiro. In 2013, Monterio began a series called The Prophecy to raise awareness of environmental damage caused by excessive human consumption.

The artworks she produce echoes her curiosity with the human face and the intriguing lives and stories behind them. Deidre has won many major art awards and her work is featured across the country. She has painted many famous faces including Sir Tim Shadbolt, Mark Todd, Sir Richard Hadley, AJ Hackett, Sir Michael Hill, Sir Edmond Hilary, Gary McCormick and Dame Whina Cooper. Shape Shifting is the latest exhibition from Deidre which is running until December 10th at the Hullabaloo art space, Melmore Terrace, Cromwell Historic Precinct. The exhibition is a stunning mix of paintings, drawings, limited edition etchings, and calendars. It has something for everyone!

NYE fireworks fizzle by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Lakes has cancelled its public New Year’s Eve events.

Additional toilet facilities will also be in place to support higher demand.

The council-run community fireworks and music performances on Queenstown and Wānaka lakefronts won’t go ahead due complexities of planning as the country moves to the Covid-19 traffic light system.

“We know many will still want to come into the town centres to celebrate. Our aim is to help keep people safe and ensure everyone enjoys a warm welcome as they see in 2022 in style,” Maxwell said.

Queenstown Lakes District Council Arts and Events Facilitator Jan Maxwell acknowledge many people will be disappointed.

Council will also soon announce details of its Summerdaze programme, a series of community events and activities running through January.

“I’m gutted we won’t be putting on our usual shows in Queenstown and Wānaka but making the decision now gives certainty to our suppliers as well as local businesses and members of the public who have time to find other ways to celebrate with friends and family,” she said.

The Festive Fete in Cromwell is, however, set to go ahead, its organisers have announced, offering up music, food, wine and gift shopping galore.

“We hope for many it will be opportunity to enjoy the occasion at local bars and restaurants and support our district’s hospitality sector which has been doing it tough of late.” The outdoor music and fireworks shows are usually attended by tens of thousands of people. They’re divided into staged areas, such as the Earnslaw Park stage, with security at gates checking for alcohol. But it would be difficult to manage numbers and requirements for My Vaccine Pass under the Government’s COVID-19 Protection Framework. QLDC will continue to support NZ Police between 29-31 December by contributing roaming security and the presence of the Red Frogs to support the safety and wellbeing of young adult revellers.

Everyone who enters the event will need to be double vaccinated and there will be a new layout to make more space between the stalls, to meet Covid requirements. They will also need to line up to scan the My Vaccine Pass QR code, at a new entrance to the event, before paying. Organiser Anthea Lawrence says: “We are really looking forward to being able to have the event and to support all the wonderful stallholders. “I know that the good people of Central Otago and Central Lakes will be patient with the staff on the gate who will be under a bit more pressure with having to scan vaccine passes.” It takes place at Cromwell Racecourse on 4 December, 10am-3.30pm. Entry is $15 per adult, under 14 free. Masks are encouraged, although the event is outdoors. My Vaccine Pass is required.

ARROWTOWN LIBRARY - ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN Queenstown Lakes District Council is seeking an Assistant Librarian to work at the Arrowtown Library in a permanent, part-time capacity for a minimum of 26 hours per week (including evenings and weekends). The Assistant Librarian’s primary focus is to promote a positive customer experience at the Arrowtown Library. This role has both district and branch level responsibilities. Happy thanksgiving to everyone! I was at school in America when I was little, and come November we were busy making paper turkeys and dressing up as Pilgrims and Indians - I was desperate to be a fierce Indian with all the cool feathers and beads, but I was a wimpy little English kid so always got stuck in the nerdy puritan outfits. It’s the least commercial holiday in the US calendar, and by far the nicest, celebrating the first harvest and meal shared by both groups. As you can imagine, there are modernday protests about the wisdom of allowing these Godbothering lunatics to take over the indigenous lands, but mostly it’s just a lovely day with friends and family and no buying presents - bliss! We went to Mt Crichton to celebrate it on Thursday and on the way up the Glenorchy Road, I saw a sign for a walk at Bennetts Bluff - the slightly dangerous corner where everyone (including me!) always used to slam on the brakes and take photos of the dropdead amazing view of Mt Earnslaw. It has all been fenced off and planted out now so in a few years, the view from a car won’t be visible. On the way back we went into the colossal new car and bus park and did the five minute walk up to see an almost similar view but somehow not so dramatic. I rather wish we could stop taking the thrill out of everything. All the roads in and out of the Wakatipu are spectacular and I can never decide on my favourite. We’re off to Cromwell this week to get our booster jabs the first day they’re available. I’m always partial to a trip down the gorge and I have my GP there so that I have more reasons to zip along that winding road and buy worms at the worm farm, and plants and check out the Cromwell opshops. To be honest, they’re not as good as our ones Arrowtown suddenly has two fantastic consignment clothes shops (posher than opshops as they only take very nice things). It’s so exciting going in and seeing all these different labels and colours and the stock changing every day. I think all of us have lovely things in our wardrobe that looked great when we bought them, but magically lose their allure when we get them home. Pony Up has been going for a couple of weeks now - it’s down near the Chinese Village, and Bunnies has literally just opened in Ramshaw Lane. Bunnies had a very tiny pair of Victoria Beckham jeans, and it made me remember a naughty comment in a UK paper saying the Beckhams’ nicknames are Thick and Thin. I had to slam my brakes on this morning as a group of 7 ducks and one duckling stood on Macdonnell Road. Just stood there. So I stopped and waited but they were obviously protesting - I couldn’t work out what for - no banners or glueing themselves to the tarmac. Maybe Groundswell? Or maybe something to do with Insulate Britain because of their down? Or even just some antivax quackery? Who knows? The birds in my life are all very mysterious. With my fantail babies finally leaving the nest, I have far more hours in the day now that i’m not spying on them constantly. I noticed the nest was so overcrowded that the parents had to perch on the washing line, and I went to take a photo. The click on my phone was enough to send them all hurtling off on their first flight with the parents shouting panicky instructions to them. The parents keep checking on us all the time now, but while we can hear their children, they’ve moved them into far safer accommodation high up in a tree and away from my intrusive ways.

Family mourns man who died packrafting by Paul Taylor

The family of a man who died while packrafting on the Caples River have paid tribute to an “incredibly loved and adored son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend”.

Stephen Andrew Bowler, 30, was a student at Otago University, where he was completing a Masters of Science in Wildlife Management. He was also running a research project in the Eglington Valley looking at longterm outcomes of pest control on Kaka, Mohua & Pekapeka. Police say he was rafting with friends in inflatable pack rafts on the river, which feeds into the Glenorchy-end of Lake Wakatipu, but was found dead in the water at about 1pm last Monday. His sister Michelle Bowler paid tribute to him, on behalf of her family. “Stephen is an incredibly loved and adored son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend and we are all trying to make sense of this tragedy but take comfort in the fact he lived life to the fullest and died doing what he loved. “Steve had a fun, cheeky character with a wonderful ability to always share his warm energy to all who met him. “His deep love for us all and passion to make a difference for wildlife is irreplaceable. The impact he had in his short life is only a small example of what he was capable of achieving.” Police have not released any explanation of how he died but have confirmed he was not on a commercial / guided trip. A police spokesperson said officers are making enquiries in relation to his death on behalf of the coroner. “The coroner will release their finding in due course,” the spokesperson said. As a mark of respect, Ngāi Tahu has put a rahui in place (restriction on access) for Caples River, including the stretch of river mouth where it meets Lake Wakatipu. This will remain in place until 30 November. “Police extend their sympathies to his family and friends.” Police also confirmed the body located in the Clutha River on 17 November has been officially identified as Alexandra man Wayne Hammond. Sergeant Derek Ealson, on behalf of the police and Wayne’s family thanked, all those involved in the search effort. Volunteers from Coastguard Clyde & Wanaka Lakes undertook more than 200 hours of searching and incident management over the three-week period, supporting Police and LandSAR. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Wayne at this difficult time,” says Coastguard Clyde President James Robinson. “Although it’s not the outcome we had hoped for, I’d like to extend my thanks to the many volunteers across the region who gave up their own time to help bring Wayne back to his family.”

Kā Huanui a Tāhuna’s November update on its $259 million project to upgrade Queenstown’s roads and pavements will provide some welcome relief for suffering retailers, business and residents.

The Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and Queenstown Lake District Council alliance is in the throes of delivering the downtown streetscape upgrades ($57m), stage one of the arterial road ($87m) and has begun preliminary works on the SH6 package ($115m). Along with the multi-million projects to upgrade the Recreation Ground Pump Station, which included positioning more than 2500 metres of pipes under downtown streets, and prepare Lakeview for developers, Queenstown’s become a construction site. But the update confirms Lower Beach Street, near Earnslaw Park, is on track to be paved and open for the summer holiday. Large areas of Upper Beach St, a cone maze in recent months, will also have concrete laid before December 18, although will not be paved. Shop front sections of footpath will be left intact until January, with the street expected to be finished by April 2022. Workers are moving on to the final stages of the Park St upgrade, with kerbs being laid and a concrete pour due on the five-metre-wide shared path. Old asphalt has been removed from the road itself, with a new layer due early next year. Park St will be open to traffic over Christmas, with 50 parking spaces reinstated. And work to install utilities under Man St and Brecon St continues, along with the undergrounding of power lines. A retaining wall is being built at the top of Beach St, to separate bikers from pedestrians, while streetscape works have also begun on lower Brecon St, with a new stormwater line being laid. However, all construction work on Beach St and Brecon St will pause from 17 December to January 24, with many fences and cones removed to approve the appearance. Trond Johansson, who owns Goldfields Jewellers on Lower Beach St, says the streetworks have kept away the few people there were in town.

“It’s just taking an awful long time and is very noisy,” he says. “They dug up the whole town and it would have been better if they’d have finished one area before moving on to the next. “The guys try to do their best, but it seems to be understaffed, and their constantly pulled from one end of town to the other, to do other things.” Trond says the combination of streetworks and Covid restrictions have made it easily the worst period he’s seen in his 20 years as a Queenstown retailer, but it’s the removal of carparking that is the main concern. “That’s just killing off the downtown retailers, people just don’t want to come. “The streets will be great when they’re done, but the council has taken away all the carparks and they just tell people to take the bus. That’s not going to happen. “Queenstown is too spread out - Dalefield, Kelvin Heights and all those areas. If you’re living on the bus route it’s great, but if not and have to change, you just don’t go into town.” The November update also details progress on the Town Centre Arterial (Stage 1). Its budget has blown out from $50m to $87m, partially due to the need for a massive retaining wall and pedestrian overbridge at Ballarat St. That will skirt the Project Manawa site, a collection of civic and commercial buildings on Ballarat St / Stanley St to be built by QLDC and Ngāi Tahu Property. Work on the arterial route so far has included the removal of the former headmaster’s house at 61 Ballarat Street, which is set to become a new family home in Gore. The removal provides a link between Melbourne St and Henry St. It’s also included constructing a stormwater outfall structure on Park St. And, finally, test pits are being dug along Frankton Road / SH6A for the $115m project to improve transport into Queenstown, focusing on bus priority measures, along with a new BP roundabout and Howards Drive roundabout. Those projects, likely to cause much more disruption, won’t be completed before 2024.

Just two months after its maiden flight, Rolls-Royce’s “Spirit of Innovation” has hit a top speed of 622 kph, tentatively smashing the speed record for electric airplanes, Gizmodo has reported. It also claimed the top speed of 555KPH over a 3 kilometer course and lowest time to a 3,000 meter (9,843 feet) altitude (202 seconds). The records have yet to be certified, but if the 555 KPH speed stands, it would beat the current record of 342KPH — held by a Siemens-powered Extra 330LE — by an impressive 212 KPH. The Spirit of Innovation is an old-school “tail-dragger” airplane (steering at the rear) with the canopy pushed way back, and looks as fast as it goes. It’s powered by a 400 kW (535 HP), 750 volt motor. RollsRoyce said it uses the “most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace,” with 6,480 cells. Engadget.com

Pillow fighting enters combat sports arena Pillow fighting is moving out of the bedroom and into the boxing ring when Pillow Fight Championship (PFC) holds its first live, pay-per-view event in Florida on Jan. 29. Steve Williams, the man with the dream of turning childhood horseplay into a professional combat sport, said PFC delivers all the drama of hand-to-hand combat without the gore of mixed martial arts or boxing. “It’s not something where you sit there and laugh and feathers are flying,” Williams, CEO of PFC, told Reuters. “It’s serious. It’s hardcore swinging with specialized pillows.” Although the male and female competitors in January’s event mostly hail from the cutthroat worlds of MMA and boxing, children will still sleep soundly after seeing the bouts. “The only difference between our fights and MMA fights is that nobody gets hurt,” he said. “The fighters don’t like to get hurt, and there’s a lot of people who don’t want to see the blood. They want to see good competition, they just don’t want to see the violence.” The fact that so many people grew up bashing their siblings, friends and parents with pillows makes the sport relatable, which he hopes will help tap into a new audience. 100 years of radio in NZ: Major news broadcast over the century The 17th November marked 100 years of radio in New Zealand. While Morning Report has only been around since the 1970s - the ‘wireless’ has been a staple for keeping the nation together. The first minutes of the first broadcast was a song called ‘Hello my Dearie’ followed by a few words from University of Otago Professor Robert Jack in 1921. Since then radio has been part of daily lives, providing entertainment, company, but always having the news. Radio brought us news such as in 1939, New Zealand Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage announced the outbreak of World War II. In 1953 a newsflash was sent to out to an announcer that New Zealander Edmund Hillary had conquered Mount Everest. Later that same year, the Tangiwai Disaster was burned into Aotearoa history when a train plunged into the flooded river, killing 151 passengers. Destination Queenstown boss Paul Abbot has urged the Government to rethink its plans for reopening borders to international visitors.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced last week that fully vaccinated foreign nationals will be allowed into the country from 30 April, 2022, without needing to go through MIQ. But they will need to self-isolate for seven days. Abbot, in charge of the ratepayer funded Regional Tourism Organisation, says April is too far away for many businesses and believes self-isolation will deter tourists. “It has been an incredibly challenging time for the local business community,” Abbot says.

“They have adapted considerably and restructured their business models to keep afloat and keep staff employed. While some have had to go into hibernation, others have had to reluctantly reduce hours and staffing numbers to keep their business running. “They have persevered and done an admirable job handling various lockdowns and changes in Alert Levels, the short-lived Australian QFT arrangement, and the changes in operational requirements. “However, I am concerned that the border reopening date is too far away and will come too late for some businesses.” Since the announcement, there have been multiple cancellations of Australian conference and business events for Queenstown Lakes, an economic hit for the region estimated to be up to $30 million. And that’s expected to continue to rise and be much higher. He also expects overseas tourists, particularly Australians ,who were Queenstown’s biggest international market pre-COVID, to be put off by the self-isolation requirement. “I expect the Australian Government will promote and incentivise domestic travel, so when faced with that or coming to New Zealand to self-isolate for a week, the majority are likely to opt for domestic travel. “I urge the New Zealand Government to reconsider and remove the selfisolation requirement. “Our operators are already facing a bleak Christmas period, and this is likely to further add to their levels of stress and financial hardship. We will lose a big chunk of 2022 winter travel if this requirement is in place. We have already faced a lost 2020 winter and the majority of 2021 winter.” Tourism made up 44% of Queenstown Lakes GDP in the 2020 FY, with visitors spending almost $74,000 for every one resident. And about half of the full-time jobs in the region are related to tourism.

Driving through the narrow streets of Northlake, one of Wanaka’s most densely packed neighborhoods, it seems a tough call to imagine a backyard beehive anywhere here. But Barna Szocs, owner of local rent-a-hive company Tiaki bees says it is not only possible, but essential. “Although hard to imagine, Bees are the pillars of our ecosystem. Where there are no bees, there is no biodiversity, pollination or growth. And with the rapid urbanisation of rural areas we are reaching a point where we - as a community - need to step up and lend a hand ” Szocs said. And In the Queenstown Lakes district, that helping hand comes in the form of carefully crafted hives, perfectly placed and dotted throughout suburbia. Szocs started the company mid-pandemic after conversations with friends (many of them wanting a hive themselves) lamenting the lack of raw honey available sparked an idea. “There is a growing trend of awareness both for our own health and the health of the environment. More and more people are looking to grow their own food and give back to our planet - and what better way than to host your own hive. Only one square metre of land is needed, meaning even those on the smallest of sections can be part of the experience ,” Szocs continued. “The pollination carried out by these hives will help plants, trees, and vegetation flourish. Essentially, we are future-proofing our region as well as providing a one hundred percent raw, natural, nutritious superfood at the same time” he added. The Tiaki Bees premise is simple, they provide the hives, the education and the work while you receive the honey and contribute to our ecosystem. Tiaki also provides a commercial service for orchards and farms, and recently launched ‘Hives in schools’ programme, whereby hives are placed in schools for 12 months allowing students to learn about these intriguing creatures and their value, up close. The so-called ‘bad bugs’ are clearing up weak plants just as nature intended. As well as planting a diverse, insect-friendly plot, remember to feed and grow the life under your feet. The more robust and alive your soil is, the healthier your plants will be. Regular applications of compost promote healthy, thriving soil life. Liquid seaweed is a ‘silver bullet’ for the garden, supplying minerals and micro nutrients to help you grow healthier plants. I recommend using a seaweed foliar spray once every one to two weeks. How to get stuff done and stop procrastinating in 2 easy steps Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland

Summer is on its way and you have decided that now is the time that you want to get into shape and really set yourself some challenges for 2022. Or maybe you’ve just decided that now is the time to write that book, run that marathon, start your own business, do that training course or get that promotion at work. Whatever it is, it’s something that really inspires you and yeah it’s gonna take some hard work and a little bit of time and you’re ready to go. You have probably done this in the past though, got really excited about a plan that you’ve created and yet when you look back you may have stumbled at several hurdles and found that it was not as simple as you thought. Here’s how to make sure this time is different. And not just different but easier than you have ever imagined possible. You are so much more than you think you are and you can achieve much more than you ever thought possible. The first question to ask yourself is are you historically a procrastinator?

So the two steps to look out for to really achieve what it is you want to achieve are to ask yourself whilst you’re on task doing the thing you’re supposed to be doing these two questions.

1. Am I procrastinating? If the answer is yes, then you’ve caught the illusion red-handed, and all you need to do is focus on what needs to happen next to get you closer to where you want to be.

2. Am I being a perfectionist?

Do you find yourself getting really excited about a plan and sharing this with your friends and family with great enthusiasm, telling them exactly how you are going to achieve it and when it’s going to be achieved by.

If the answer is yes, then once again you’ve caught the illusion redhanded and now you just know it’s procrastination in disguise and therefore you can now focus on whatever it is you need to do to get to where you wanna go.

Then when it comes to actually starting to take action, you find that lots of things can distract you really easily, and before you know it you are doing some random job that doesn’t really need doing and yet you feel as though you’re achieving something, it’s just not what it was you set out to achieve.

This is so simple that it actually is quite unbelievable and yeah I can pretty much hang my hat on the fact that these two questions asked regularly and answered honestly will take you to where you want to go rather than mowing the lawn or unloading the dishwasher.

The other thing to look out for is are you a perfectionist? If you are a perfectionist and you find that you need to get all your ducks in a row before you can actually take any effective action then let me let you into a secret.

Perfectionism is actually procrastination in disguise. It’s crafty because it makes you believe that you’re only going to do the very best in order to achieve whatever it is you plan to achieve and yet really it’s just procrastination. Let’s imagine that you want to write a book, you’ve done some research and you realise that you need to get the latest iPad because you can actually dictate to the iPad and therefore you don’t have to manually type everything. So you go online and order the brand-new iPad and it’s going to take eight weeks to arrive. And this is the illusion it feels as though you’ve taken affective action where actually all you’ve done is procrastinate. If you were taking effective action you could’ve started writing a book even without a new iPad you could’ve literally just taken a pencil and some paper and started writing or even easier just use your existing PC or Mac.

Lakes The Remarkables serves as a jaw dropping backdrop to Lake Wakatipu which creates pretty spectacular scenery that you can’t get anywhere close to in Australia. Then, we have an incredible number of smaller lakes that are an easy day hike. You can also kayak to Pigeon Island that doesn’t have a soul living there. This is all on our backdoor step and sometimes we take it for granted so when those jets from Aussie return and passengers step onto the tarmac and just stop in awe it will bring back just how special this place is.

Big walks The Routeburn, Milford, The Grand Traverse and Kepler tracks are our iconic multiday tracks and Ben Lomond is one of our most popular days hikes and while Australia has some good long distance walking trails, they’re not as well packaged or as easily accessible as ours. Shuttle buses, mountain huts, private lodges and even the mapping and signposting is all really well organised.

Wineries This section is more about your palette, Australia does big reds magnificently. But we do certain varietals better. Sauvignon blanc is the classic and of course this region produces world class pinot noir. The Australian wineries are mostly spread out where as, many of our best wineries are within easy biking distance from each other which makes for a very fun and accessible day out free from the car

Fiords and sounds The Southern Lakes wins on boat trips even before you get to the fiords. Taking a trip on our very own Earnslaw to view the Wakatipu is pretty special. Snow Australia has ski areas but they are not a patch on Coronet, Treble Cone, Cardrona let alone Remarks. Our mountain are not only higher but with our winter temperatures being that much colder it makes for much better skiing. Also, it’s a trek to get to any of Australia’s mountains from the major cities, therefore it’s so much more convenient and sometime cheaper to fly here for more bankable snow conditions.

To be fair there some things that Australia has in abundance that we don’t have such as the outback, the world’s best beaches and seaside towns, big city energy and of course fresh Aussie prawns. That of course is the joy of travel, we get to experience the world with new eyes when we are somewhere else amd vice versa. Can’t wait to welcome our Aussie mates once again.

BUSINESS SECTION Queenstown businesses grappling with staff shortages ahead of summer “I have an expectation that only through transport that they’re going to have to go up in price. But labour’s going to affect those businesses as well, increased costs of labour... and ultimately this is all going to be passed on to the consumer.” He’d like a rough timeframe for when the transTasman bubble would reopen. Carlyn Topp started going to local high schools six months ago checking if any students wanted a summer job to stave off worker shortages. She’s the general manager of Highview Apartments in Queenstown and Marina Terrace Accommodation in Wānaka. Many businesses were struggling to find and afford staff, she said.

Queenstown businesses are grappling with severe staff shortages - with some managers preparing to pitch in on the front line this summer.

“Everybody’s really watching their bottom dollar. They’re wanting to have a viable business so they’re not spending anything that they don’t need to. “We don’t know if the bookings are going to happen. We don’t know if three weeks later Auckland’s going to go back into lockdown.”

Fully-vaccinated people will be able to cross the Auckland border freely from the middle of next month.

So far, she hadn’t noticed a significant impact of the Auckland border announcement, saying there were just as many cancellations as bookings.

But workers remained in short supply in the resort town, with people leaving to seek more stability, lower costs or return home.

Topp was looking to either hold over rooms or use outside contractors or rental workers to cover the busy period.

Queenstown Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ruth Stokes said many businesses were in a bad way.

“It’s not feasible to take on somebody and expect them to just to work for you for a ten day period or to be on a casual contract that they may never get more work out of you for another couple of weeks or something.”

“From what we’re hearing, this would be one of the worst positions businesses have ever found themselves in. “We know that there are statistics such as it is the hardest to find people in almost 20 years.”

The Queenstown Chamber of Commerce said bookings from Aucklanders had been steady, but the resort town would have plenty of room over summer.

She expected businesses would be forced to adapt the same way they did when the trans Tasman bubble reopened earlier this year. “You will see restrictions on numbers of rooms available in hotels. You will see restaurants having to be closed at lunchtime or on different days of the week just so they manage their staff.” The Rees Hotel’s chief executive, Mark Rose, was working out how to maintain their high standards without hiring more staff. He has gone from 120 to 48 staff during the pandemic. “That’s going to entail me going back and cooking in the kitchen. I’m a chef by trade... I’m getting a bit long in the tooth but for me to go in and give them a hand just to get through this peak. “So that’s the first part. We don’t want to bring on any more staff without visibility of a border - to preferably Australia - opening.” While they had an initial rush of bookings from Aucklanders, that had since settled down and they were preparing for a peak of visitors from 28 December until early January. Mark Rose was preparing for a 15 percent increase in their wage budget to ensure they could attract and keep staff. His business offered a minimum wage of just under $24 an hour. He was also budgeting for other costs to go up including for quality ingredients, sheets, towels and hair products.

COMMUNITY NOTES Santa’s back at Minus 5º ICE BAR for Plunket fundraiser Every December for the last 10 years Minus 5º ICE BAR transforms into Santa’s Grotto, with families enjoying the magic of watching their kids light up while visiting Santa Claus in his real life ‘Arctic’ home. This year is no different – the jolly bearded fellow in the red suit is heading to Queenstown’s Steamer Wharf, and locals are invited to bring the whole family to visit. Santa will be at home and taking visitors in his ‘natural frozen environment’, just like the North Pole where he and his reindeers live, at Minus 5º ICE BAR from Friday December 10 to Sunday December 12 between 10am and 2pm daily. The annual Arrowtown Long Lunch event will be held on Buckingham Street on Friday 3 December, showcasing the rich variety of restaurants, beauty, history and culinary variety Arrowtown has to offer.

Stakeholder workshops are for people who work with community groups and individuals to support their wellbeing.

Buckingham Street, between Berkshire Street and Merioneth Street, will be closed to traffic between the hours 7.00am and 6.00pm on Friday 3 December for the event. Parking restrictions will also apply from the late evening on Thursday 2 December until 6.00pm on Friday 3 December, as per previous years.

What is GoodYarn? GoodYarn is the name of a community workshop where you’ll learn all about mental wellbeing, how to protect it, and how to talk to someone you are concerned about. You’ll pick up lots of useful tips and information, practice having caring conversations and learn what support is available if more help is needed. It’s not just good for your mental health, but for those around you.

Other countries, such as the UK, have reimposed public health measures including masks in shops and on public transport, and self-isolation for Omicron cases. Omicron’s genetic profile has raised concerns, as it has mutations that theoretically will help it spread more quickly, make vaccines less effective and increase the risk of reinfection. But there is a lack of real world data at present. Before it emerged late last week, Queenstown Lakes District Council and the Wānaka Community Board elected members issued a joint statement congratulation the community on becoming the first district in Aotearoa New Zealand to attain over 90% fully immunised. “With Aucklanders able to travel around the country from mid-December providing they are either double-vaxxed or have returned the required negative test, and [the] Government announcement on a road map for international borders opening up in the New Year, we believe this is a milestone in our district’s recovery,” the statement says. They recognised locals will be concerned about the return of tourists after living in the South Island ‘bubble’ for so long, and acknowledge the message from the Ministry of Health and Southern District Health Board that we’re highly likely to see local cases in Otago and Southland before too long. “We should expect this and can prepare for it by considering the measures we would take if one of us got sick or needed to self-isolate. We encourage everyone to keep having these conversations and, if you have concerns, to share them with your friends, family and work colleagues. “We join together in encouraging anyone hesitating to get a second jab, or booking their first appointment, to speak to a medical professional regarding their concerns without delay.”
