Slippery slope to the right
I’m trying to figure out what to think about the proposed new ski tunnel at The Remarks skifield providing access to the Doolans. When I heard NZSki boss Paul Anderson announce the plans for the 300m-ish tunnel, which will just about triple the size of skiable terrain up there by opening up another valley, my first reaction was: “That’s awesome”. The announcement was made up at Coronet Peak on Thursday, in the same café where I’ve spent much of the pre-lockdown winter camped out while kids, aged five and eight, learned to ski with NZSki’s Little Rippers programme. I alternated between doing a few runs, drinking coffee and tapping out a few stories, and chatting to others in the parent clan. Idyllic. We hit The Remarks a good few times post lockdown, enjoying the new runs down from Sugar Bowl chairlift. So, on hearing the tunnel plans, I imagined the fun of going through, into new terrain, more space, more interest, more joy. But a quick look at the social media comments and I feel like I have all the critical faculties of someone who’d have stood on a street corner in Paris in 1940 as the tanks rolled in and said ‘ooh, haven’t they got nice uniforms’.

Most objections have centred around the Doolans itself, and the need to leave it as a pristine backcountry area, filled with rare plants, streams and wildlife, providing major access to hunting, hiking, ski touring, ice climbing etc. Others include the possible hike in season pass prices, carparking, worker accommodation, and “WTF”, why expand a “dying industry into another conservation area” with climate change underway. Now I know ‘I’m trying to figure out what to think’ isn’t the most coloursto-the-mast opinion piece. But, I haven’t made up my mind. I have a few genuine questions of my own, from both sides of the debate. Feel free to answer in the comments when this goes online.

Queenstown’s ski tunnel to world class resort by Paul Taylor
A 300-metre ski tunnel could be dug through the top of The Remarks skifield to open up another valley for skiers and snowboarders. NZSki wants to massively expand the skiable terrain at the Queenstown skifield by creating access into the Doolans within the next five years. “The Remarkables has got the potential to be a truly world-class, multiple basin, multiple valley resort, that we only see in places like Europe and North America,” NZSki boss Paul Anderson says. “There’s nothing of this scale in New Zealand currently.” The plans would enlarge the skifield from 385ha to 900ha. Along with the Soho expansion by RealNZ over at Cardrona Alpine Resort, it would increase the skiable area in the Southern Lakes region by 60-70%. “We think that the best way to get into the Doolans and certainly the most environmentally sensitive is to go there via a ski tunnel.” Anderson says the tunnel would be 200m-300m long, up to nine metres wide, and near the top of the Curvey Basin chairlift, but away from the Wye Saddle. Skiers and snowboards would ski down through the tunnel to access the Doolans, where there would be a 1.4km chairlift that goes from 1600ms up to Helicopter Ridge at over 1930m, opening up the entire basin. “We would also need to build other infrastructure clearly, snowmaking, power, water and wastewater, as well as amenities buildings and shelter for guests that would go over to The Doolans,” Anderson says. Before that, NZSki plans to install a new Shadow Basin chairlift next summer and expand the Remarkables base building. Patronage has increased 70% since it was built in 2014. The Remarkables skifield was originally planned to be in the Doolans, but instead the developers chose the Rastus Burn recreation reserve as it provided better access to Queenstown. Anderson says the company now wants to hear whether it has the support of the community for the expansion.
Anderson believes the project will enhance the conservation values of Kawarau/ Remarkables, highlighting that recreation is part of the purpose of conservation. “Our own modelling suggest that within the next 10 years we’re actually going to run out of capacity in our ski areas, just with the local community growing, let alone the tourists coming in and wanting to be here.” About 7,100 people a day use the Southern Lakes’ skifields, more than Queenstown Airport (6,500), Milford Sound (2,100) and State Highway 6 in Queenstown (7,100). NZSki operates both The Remarkables and Coronet Peak on Department of Conversation (DoC) land and has faced opposition over works in recent years. Forest and Bird threatened legal action when QLDC gave consent to create a new learners’ slope through wetlands and acclaimed botanist and conservationist Sir Alan Mark raised concerns over the fate of snow tussocks in the path of the Sugar Bowl chairlift runs. But the company has undertaken substantial environmental projects to mitigate the impact. And, with RealNZ, it has also now set a baseline for its emissions, with the aim to reduce them in future years. Kawarau/ Remarkables is classified as stewardship land, rather than conservation land, but DoC is in the process of reviewing the status. With the Doolans and Soho combined, up to 5,000 more people could be employed within the industry, increasing from the current 7,500 (direct and indirect) to 12,500 per year. It would also mean skiers and ski tourists bring more money into the Southern Lakes. The economic impact was estimated to be $430 million during the 2019 ski season, about a quarter of the region’s GDP. “We know it is going to be a very long process. We know we need to talk to a lot of stakeholders and there’s a lot of interest parties, but we are ambitious to get there,” Anderson says.

The ‘eligible population’ figure is derived from anyone with the Queenstown address who has interacted with the health system in NZ, such as by enrolling with a GP or medical centre, or needing treatment at hospital. It doesn’t include the under 12s, who are, as yet, not eligible to receive the vaccine. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult says the achievement is “a testament to the fine folk of the Queenstown Lakes and their commitment to one another”. “You have all risen to the challenge and taken that step to protect our way of life, our economy, and our whānau and friends. I congratulate and thank each and every one of you.” Twelve DHBs have now reached the 90% first dose vaccination milestone, including the Southern DHB, the most recent being South Canterbury. To date, 91% of eligible people in NZ have had their first dose and 83% are fully vaccinated. There were 321 new community cases over the weekend, the majority in Auckland but also small numbers in Waikato, Northland, Bay of Plenty and Christchurch, where there are now three community cases. Last week, the Lake Hayes A&P Show became the latest event to cancel due to uncertainty of Covid restrictions. It’s the first time the show, scheduled for 15 January, been cancelled since World War II.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
There’s been such a lot on this week - huge generosity from all quarters - Mike and Bridgie Mee putting 170 hectares of their own land under a QEII National Trust covenant to protect it as green space in perpetuity for the community. It is so heartening to see this when the council had already earmarked it as “high density residential” so that it would become yet another hideous problem like Ladies Mile, Coneburn and Ayrburn. Why QLDC is so intent on filling up every available green space is a mystery. But the Walker House on Ladies Mile has been left empty for what must be at least three years? Couldn’t a family have rented it? Or let community groups use it? They spent $15 million on it and NO-ONE has used it at all. Weren’t they going to use it as the new rugby club when they demolish the perfectly good old one, the rugby grounds AND our Memorial Hall? Does anyone know what’s happening with this? While QLDC whizzes sit in their offices churning out unreadable drivel,chopping down trees, building roads to nowhere and generally throwing millions of dollars around on nothing at all, lots of busy women are busy doing good. I heard her saying she’s going to do candle making courses at some stage, too... I’m so heartbroken at the thought that the Lake Hayes Show will not go ahead in 2022 because of COVID. The only other reason that’s ever caused its cancellation was war. So many young men had gone away, that every farm was already shortstaffed and all the women and children and old people had so much work to do that they couldn’t afford the luxury of a day off in the middle of summer. I’m so aching to win a piece of paper saying I got 3rd in the string bean category or a crazily ambitious 2nd in the chocolate brownie class and now my dreams are shattered. Maybe I’ll run an underground version of the A and P show.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) called Sunday for Peng’s claims to be “investigated fully, fairly, transparently and without censorship”, and current and former players have taken to social media to express fear for the safety of the former Wimbledon and French Open doubles champion.
He added that “this is not a diplomatic question” and made no further comment on the fate of the former world number one doubles player. Details of Peng’s reported accusations, made earlier this month that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had sexually assaulted her, remain scrubbed from China’s Internet. Searches for their names on key portals come back empty. Also, China’s national tennis association did not respond to AFP requests for comment. In its statement, the WTA’s chairman Steve Simon said the events concerning Peng were “of deep concern” and called for her claims to be “treated with the utmost seriousness”. Yahoo News
2021 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Arrives in N.Y.C. The 2021 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree arrived last Saturday in New York City, after the 79-foot Norway spruce arrived from Elkton, Maryland, earlier in the week. The tree is a tradition in NY being put in place in mid November and lit in a public ceremony on the Wednesday evening following Thanksgiving. The tree is lit by the current Mayor of New York City, An estimated 125 million people visit the attraction each year. Marking the first time the tree has been chosen in Maryland in the tradition’s nearly 90-year history, it was donated from the yard of the Price family, who was present in N.Y.C. for the 80-year-old tree’s arrival. “We never thought a tree on our property would be selected for Rockefeller Center. Nope, not in a million years,” Devon Price said. “ Following the 225km trek, the fir was escorted by the NYPD to its final destination at Rockefeller Plaza, where it was lifted into place by a crane. One is the record for the most-streamed album in a day by a female in Spotify history. “Red (Taylor’s Version)” accomplished that by picking up over 90.8 million streams on day one. The other Spotify record broken by Swift was the one for the moststreamed female in a single day in Spotify history. She did that with more than 122.9 million streams on Friday 12th November. Technique and heart hit the mats at the Queenstown Events Centre recently. More than 250 people competed at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition King of the South IV, hosted by Carlson Gracie BJJ NZ.
“But, fortunately we were able to go ahead, following all the Covid rules about numbers in the venue and masks.” The martial art and sport has exploded in popularity in recent years. Grapplers aged five to mid-40s faced off in Gi (the traditional martial arts clothing) and No-Gi matches across weight divisions, and white belt to brown belt skill levels. The submission-based martial art and sport sees competitors attempt to submit their opponents with various joint locks and chokes, while also scoring points for takedowns, sweeps and pins. “The event was awesome, the environment, the level, and everything went smoothly,” Carlson Gracie NZ head coach Jose Gomes says. “The main thing for me was seeing people after they’d competed or watched the fights, how happy and how impressed they were. “There was a lot of good sportsmanship, lots of respect for each other.”
When Gomes began training people in Queenstown around 12 years ago, students were “awkward” dealing with that much physical contact. “But with the rise of MMA, and the sport being so intricate and interesting, so much of a mind game, people are just loving it. “It’s a combination of physical health, mental health and also social health... and I think it’s just going to keep growing.” He established the Carlson Gracie NZ academy in the resort in 2014, which has grown from 15 members to more than 200 locally, with satellite clubs in Wanaka, Invercargill and Canterbury. Nineteen BJJ clubs from across the South Island were represented, across 360 registrations (with some competitors registering for both Gi and No-Gi). That’s slightly down on last year’s 400+ registrations, with clubs from the North Island unable to attend. “They are all really keen to come and compete, so I think without the restrictions next year is going to be way bigger.” Gomes says one of the highlights of the day were the brown belt match ups, especially the high-paced 79kg No-Gi fight between Barna Szocs, of Carlson Gracie Wanaka, and Bradley Hamilton, of Carlson Gracie Queenstown, which Hamilton won on points. Hamilton also beat Kristian Carson, of Christchurch’s Oceanside Jiu Jitsu NZ, in the same bracket to take gold, submitting him with a heel hook. “They were really competitive and entertaining high-level brown belt fights. It was really cool.” Another highlight was the event going ahead at all. Previous comps have been cancelled due to alert levels, while BJJ clubs across NZ and the world have had to close at points throughout the pandemic, replaced temporarily by ‘zoomjitsu’ classes. “I was ready psychologically to be okay with having to cancel again, because there was so much uncertainty,” Gomes says.

Queenstown’s beloved annual Christmas Show is back this December, with a show that can be watched around the world. The show promises the same dedication to family entertainment, great music and local young talent, but this year it can be watched online. With Covid-19 continuing to cause uncertainty around running public events safely, the organisers behind this year’s show have decided to film a live performance of the show and upload it to the Christmas Show website (christmasshow.co.nz). It’s free to watch and will be online 12th – 26th December, all you need to do is register. Show writer and director Lisa Clough says it’ll be the same big show with all the bells and whistles:

“We’ve decided to make the show free and to release it online only. It’ll be the same big show, on the same big stage with all the cool stuff, but there’ll be no live audience. With Covid causing uncertainties, we wanted to make sure we could still put on the show.” TomTom is assisting with the tech and local theatre stalwart Dave Oakley will film the live show for the premier on 12th December. Written by Lisa, this year’s show is all about a conundrum with Santa, who’s having a great time, but can’t do his job – and it’s Christmas eve! “It’s a musical called ‘Rockin’ Christmas’ and the kids who are the lead characters have a family band. Santa and Santa’s elf have crashed in a backyard and so the kids have to find Santa and remind him who he is. And they do that through lots of different musical experiences.” The show will be performed by local young actors and musicians, including Paige Gawn, who plays lead character ‘JJ’. There’s also cameos by the Queenstown Conservatoire of Classical ballet, the Queenstown Gymnastics Club and the Men’s Ballet. This will be the sixth show in its current iteration, with Lisa and Margaret O’Hanlon writing, directing and producing the show. “The Christmas Show has been going for a long time and we’ve been doing this storyline style show for six years now. There are some elements we always have – like the Men’s Ballet – and lots of singing and dancing and plenty of Christmas cheer. It’s always a popular show and a hit with families. “[…] the show is such a big part of my Christmas now, it pretty much is my Christmas! It creeps up on me quickly every year, but I love doing it. It’s great because I get to hang out with all the talented young performers and everyone is always full of the Christmas spirit,” says Lisa. This year’s show is in support of Te Atamira, the new arts and cultural facility in Queenstown. Donations to the centre can be made online while booking. The funds raised will go towards the fit-out of the facility, where many of the performers, musicians and artists involved in the show could be rehearsing in the near future. Property market surfs through the Covid storm by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Lakes’ property market bounced back relatively easily from the pandemic test and continues to record record highs.
Strong demand for houses and sections in popular subdivisions, such as Shotover Country and Hanley’s Farm, have seen record-setting values.
All sectors of the market - residential, lifestyle, rental, commercial, tourism & hotel and industrial - remain strong despite grim predictions when the borders closed to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents on March 19, 2020.
But over 2021, something of a two-tier market has emerged, with investors looking at new stock rather than existing, in part due to new Government rules, including Healthy Homes standards for rentals, and new builds remaining on the five-year Brightline test, rather than 10 years.
Colliers’ Otago Market Review and Outlook 2021-2022, released on Thursday, highlights demand continuing to outweigh supply, along with confidence in Queenstown’s future, as the key reasons.
“This has left room for the first home buyer market to take on and add value to the district’s more established property stock,” Beard says, with the report highlighting older style units in Fernhill and Frankton attracting first-time buyers.
Heather Beard, Director of Valuation at Colliers Queenstown, says: “This is in part due to new residents moving to the regions, including ex-pats returning home. “For some, lockdowns brought to light the importance of living in a place with opportunities for outdoor experiences and lifestyle options and, along with the increasing acceptance of remote working, this has made the Queenstown-Lakes District appealing.”
At the other end of the market, the lifestyle market of large lots and semirural properties has soared. In 2021, there have been 40 sales fetching more than $3 million, compared with 23 in 2020 and 13 in 2019. There were also four sales topping $10 million each. And over five years, in terms of median sales, prices have doubled.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Lifestyle sales volume has dropped slightly, due to restricted supply, leading to strong interest in new subdivisions offering larger sections, including Koko Ridge and Kawarau Heights near Ladies Mile, Coneburn and Gibbston Valley Station’s gated community. The rental market has also bounced back, somewhat, from the post lockdown fall of about 20%, leading to rental properties flooding the market. Some of those properties have now returned to short-term rentals, taken up by new residents moving to Queenstown or returning from overseas. The median weekly rent is back up to $545, having dropped to $515 postlockdown, from a high of $640 per week in the six months to February 2020, when the pandemic hit. “Despite the property market performing strongly, some risk remains with the increasing OCR flowing onto an increase in interest rates for mortgage holders,” Beard says. Across commercial property, there have been some huge sales in the CBD, with the BNZ bank building in 11-13 Rees St, a two-level building with ground floor retail space and first floor offices, selling for $17 million in July 2021. And 9B Church Lane, across three levels, sold for $2.7m in June. “In the commercial market, we are also seeing some strong transactions in particular for centrally-located assets, suggesting a high level of confidence in the CBD market, though some vacancies have appeared in secondary and fringe areas,” she says. “A return to pre-pandemic levels of business is anticipated in the long term, and projected visitor and population growth figures from QLDC back up this assumption.”

Prime retail is returning $1,750-$2,200 per sqm, secondary retail $450$1,100, and office $300-$425. However, ongoing border closures, CBD roadworks and parking issues have seen some tenants end their tenure in the CBD, with some choosing to move to Frankton. “Many locals are choosing to shop in the Frankton area due to its convenience to established and high-growth residential neighbourhoods.” In Frankton, by contrast, retail is $400-$750 per sqm, large & showroom $325-$450, and office $325-$425. Colliers also expects to see upward pressure on office rentals in Frankton as demand increase for premium spaces, which are larger, have onsite parking and a shorter commute for many, compared to the CBD. Even demand for tourism properties remains strong, especially for centrallylocated properties with strong development potential. Recent sales include Deco Backpackers, 48-52 Man Street, Queenstown, at 1,967sqm property, which sold in March for $8.3m. The freehold on nearby 12-unit Lomond Lodge Motel sold for $5.2m in September. Purchasers have included large-scale hotel developers, demonstrating confidence in the region’s recovery and forecast visitor numbers. While occupancy rate for year-ended September 2021 shows Queenstown falling behind rest of country, at 39%, this does not account for approximately 25% of NZ hotels being utilised as MIQ facilities. Room rates in Queenstown average $190 per night, 34.7% lower than the previous year. Domestic visitor spend according to MBIE was up 53% to $593m, although international visitor spend was down 82% to $56m. Several hotels are at various stages of construction and completion. The Holiday Inn and Quest hotels in Remarkables Park are both due to open by the end of 2021, and Sudima at 5 Mile is opening February 2022. These three hotels will add a combined total of 342 rooms to Queenstown’s hotel stock. A 60-room Radisson branded hotel on Man St, in Central Queenstown, is also under construction, as is The Carlin on Hallenstein St, slated to open in February. “While the ongoing lockdown in Auckland has taken a toll on the hotel and tourism property sectors, demand for tourism properties has remained strong, again with a focus on central CBD positions,” Beard says. “The market also remains active for properties with development potential.” And across the industrial sector, Frankton’s industrial area is recovering towards pre-pandemic rental rates, following a short, sharp decrease after the 2020 lockdown.

Give peace a chance – a world in transition A Catalyst Trust kōrero with Brigid Inder, OBE The International Criminal Court (ICC) was born in response to the tragic genocides in both former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, the brutality and rapid escalation of which shocked the world’s collective conscience into action.
She was co-founder and executive director for 15 years of Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice, based in The Hague, recognised in 2018 as “the premier advocacy organisation for women in international criminal law”.
Queenstown woman Brigid Inder was one of those galvanised to create a permanent Court that could prosecute, and in time possibly deter, perpetrators of mass crimes. She is an international expert on gender justice, women’s rights, peace building, global advocacy and the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
She will share her perspectives on the ICC and her experiences working in armed conflicts in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Libya, the Central African Republic and elsewhere at a Catalyst Trust kōrero on December 1 entitled: Give peace a chance – a world in transition.
Bridgit’s story Bridgit started school at St Joseph’s here in Queenstown. At age 11 she announced to her grandparents Iris and Jim O’Connell, former Queenstown hoteliers, that she wanted to negotiate peace agreements and be a diplomat. And so it came to be… Brigid has a long history of advocacy work at the United Nations as a civil society advocate and advisor on international policy negotiations involving the environment, population and development issues, children’s rights, and gender equality. She was awarded an OBE for her work in international justice and women’s rights and was the inaugural recipient of the Bertha von Suttner Peace Prize, in recognition of her contribution to the “Peace through Law” movement. Brigid is co-lead of the Stop Ecocide Campaign Aotearoa New Zealand, part of a global movement to introduce ecocide as an international crime. This campaign sits at the intersection of indigenous knowledge, legal processes, political will, and the environmental movement as a strategy to curb the worst forms of ecosystem, ecological and species devastation. She is a mediator for people and the Earth, director of Deep Time Walk, an advisor to Journalists for Justice and has an honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Otago.
International Criminal Courts mandate Bridgit says the ICC’s founding treaty describes its aspirational mandate as “preserving the delicate mosaic of common bonds that unite people and address threats to the security, peace and well-being of humanity for the sake of current and future generations.” Not an easy task. Continuing conflicts, such as Myanmar, Syria, Israel and Palestine, and Yemen, show we are still stuck in stale paradigms, numbed by old habits, and our new consciousness is not yet fully formed. “We are a world in transition. Collectively, we are between stories.”
At the korero, Bridgit will also talk about her work with the ICC in prosecuting sexual and gender-based crimes, historically overlooked by international tribunals, and the importance of this international court for humanity as we, slowly, transition towards more harmonious relationships between people, communities and nations.

It has been the case at events like this week’s Chamber of Commerce AGM and NZSki’s end of season overview, as well as many other visits I have had across the Lakes District recently. Of course, it could not come soon enough for businesses and the community alike after a remarkably trying time in which restrictions of movement and trade have taken away some of the special aspects that have built our town’s critical international acclaim. Residents have clearly signalled their motivation to move on and reopen Queenstown to the world going by our double vaccinated rate of more than 90%. Given we have done our bit, it is only fair that the Government fronts up and does the same. The best place to start would be by the Prime Minister ending her hazy messaging and delivering clarity and certainty to the New Zealand people. If you are like me, you will have had enough of listening to announcements about announcements and plans that are to come. Just this week Labour has signalled it will backflip on its 90% vaccination commitment and move to its traffic light system on a date which can’t be clarified – soon after 29 November. My colleagues and I have lobbied extensively for a change in the Government’s unclear approach which it appears to be making up on the run. National hasn’t just been critical of the Government, we have been actively working on solutions that will end restrictions. They include the directives needed to re-build trans-Tasman travel before welcoming more visitors from other countries back to Queenstown. In our Our Opening Up and Back In Business blueprints aimed at releasing New Zealand from the pain of the pandemic, we’ve outlined a series of clear strategic measures that will strengthen New Zealand’s Covid resilience and give New Zealanders certainty about their futures. It starts with an achievable 85% vaccination rate and a firm domestic opening date of December 1. But it is not a case of simply opening the gates and hoping for the best as the Government appears to be doing. Saliva testing and rapid antigen testing are key tools that can add a layer of protection that will quickly identify and then slow the spread of Delta.

The well overdue strengthening of New Zealand’s ICU facilities and our hospital infrastructure will prepare regions for potential localised outbreaks. The Government took National’s lead with its recent changes to its immigration policies in which it effectively took up our Covid Contribution Visa concept following strong lobbying. The key to the Government taking up our Covid blueprints to deliver New Zealanders certainty about their futures is through it refining its focus. Unnecessary large-scale projects like Three Waters and the problematic MIQ system must both be shut down. New Zealanders deserve to be able to come home and if they are double vaccinated there is absolutely no reason to keep them from their own country any longer. While people with Covid can isolate at home it makes even less sense that a double vaccinated traveller with a negative test still has to go through MIQ. We have been in the most uncertain of times for almost two years.

The cancellation of many of the Cancer Society’s fundraising events has caused a significant loss of income to help support people living with cancer. The Cancer Society’s ‘Longest Day Golf Challenge’ is a great way to support the Cancer Society and is a golfing endurance event that will test skill and stamina. The challenge is to complete four rounds of golf - that’s 72 holes - in one day to raise funds for the Cancer Society. The Cancer Society invites golfers to dust off their golf clubs and get ready for The Longest Day Golf Challenge, raising money for people with cancer. Players tee off at sunrise and play through to sunset, making the most of daylight on the longest days of the year. Choose the day, the course, tell your mates and make the team – or do it solo. Participants choose the day, the course, and the team - or play solo if they prefer. The longest day of the year is 21st December, but participants can play any day in December or January that suits them. Cancer Society’s Marketing and Fundraising Manager Jonet Warhurst said, “We raised $50,000 from the first last Longest Day Golf Challenge; the money participants raise will make a real difference to people living with cancer. It’s a great way to support people with cancer, and whatever your level of skill, it’s a brilliant day out with your mates.” In the last challenge Micah Dickinson and friends played 4 rounds over 4 different courses in Queenstown, Jacks Point, The Hills, Arrowtown and Millbrook and were one of the top fundraisers. This year they looking to up the ante and will try and do 100 holes and are playing the addition holes at The Hills and the new course at Millbrook. Ideally, participants choose a day when the golf course is as quiet as possible. It is recommended to avoid competition days and liaise closely with the Club Manager/team captain to plan the day as thoroughly as possible. It is recommended to play in teams of 2-4 to hasten the play. This challenge is an actual test of endurance, but 72 holes are just more fun with friends! Create a team when you sign up or afterwards from your fundraising dashboard. Every dollar raised through ‘The Longest Day’ will go towards cancer care in our community, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research.
The course will refamiliarise drivers with safety rules and safe driving practices. Its classroom based and help older drivers remain independent. There are two dates. Earnslaw Park Willow Tree removal The damaged willow tree on Earnslaw Park in Queenstown is to be removed immediately. A suitable replacement tree will be planted as near as possible to the location of the removed tree once Christmas and New Year festivities have passed. QLDC’s arboricultural assessment identified that the willow’s structural integrity was dangerously compromised by the recent strong winds, beyond the point where it was safe to leave it in situ, or where further work could save it. Councils intention is to replace it with a tree of appropriate maturity to provide continued shade coverage and remain in keeping with existing planting on Earnslaw Park.

Queenstown’s Christmas Show is going online due to Covid-19 restrictions. The popular annual extravaganza usually packs out the Events Centre with families keen to rock into the festive spirit. But, with uncertainty over alert levels and crowd constraints, organisers have taken the decision to perform the show behind closed doors and screen it online. It will be professionally filmed and edited and then available on the Vimeo platform, to people who have registered, on Sunday, 12 December, from 3pm. Director Lisa Clough says: “Even though it’s a challenge and something different, with the uncertainty we decided it was the best way to go forward and know we could have a show. “We wanted to give our talented local youngsters a chance to perform. We’re still going to be exactly how we would be if we were to perform it to a live audience.” There are about 100 children in the cast, aged between eight and 17, including a core ensemble of 20, backed by performer and musical director Margaret O’Hanlon. They’re drawn from across the district, and include members of Queenstown Gymnastics Club, Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet, and DEVOS dancers. And the Remarkable Men’s Ballet will also perform, ages undisclosed, gracefully floating across the stage in their tutus. Clough says preparations have been underway since the 2020 show wrapped. The youngsters are rehearsing three days a week at the moment, but that will increase as the performance date draws near. A Rockin’ Christmas will be 1hr 15mins long and can be streamed through a smart TV or any device. It will premiere at 3pm on 12 December but can be enjoyed at leisure after that. It will follow JJ (Paige Gawn), Tia (Evie England-Hall), Tama (Felix Nicol), Max (Scarlett Hamilton), Elf (Helena Hornbacher) and Granny (Margaret O’Hanlon) as they try to help Santa, who has bumped his head and can’t remember who he is. “We hope that everybody that would have been coming will tune in, and also that people from a lot further afield, likely family members overseas, will watch too,” Clough says. “The performers have mixed emotions, because they love to have a live audience. We will still have a very pared down audience of their families, so they’ll still have that lovely atmosphere. But I think a lot of them are actually really excited that their family abroad and in other places can see it for the first time.” This year’s show is supporting the new arts and culture facility in Queenstown – Te Atamira, which will feature 21 fit-for-purpose spaces including dance, performance, visual art, music studios, a pottery workshop, recording studio, a curated art gallery, classroom workshop, youth space and café. Donations towards the fit-out of the cultural hub will be accepted at registration for the show link. We are primed and ready to travel when the borders open You don’t appreciate something nearly as much until it’s taken away. That’s been my story for 2020 and 2021. I love to travel and while the lockdowns and restrictions have forced me to stay at home, I’ve loved getting reacquainted with our beautiful country, but now I’m ready, really ready to see the world again. Apparently, I’m not alone. Booking.com has released the results of an extensive research programme across 31 countries which includes over 500 kiwi’s. Basically, while some things have changed in our desire to travel and what we want from our ‘vactationing’, the hankering to explore our world has largely remained the same and the pent-up demand to get back out there is huge.

Getting away is especially important for our health The overwhelming take out from Kiwi’s in the research, is the cognitive realisation that travel is good for our health. 71 per cent believe that travel helps their mental and emotional wellbeing and more than half of us didn’t appreciate what they loved about travel until it was taken away. Pre March 2020, we looked at the ‘getting there’ component of the travel experience as drudgery and something to be endured to get to the ‘good bit’. Not anymore, apparently, we are actually looking forward to just being in the international terminal, the lining up to board the plane and even the crowds at a popular location. 23% of us are excited at the anticipation of travel again while a whopping 78% will enjoy the travel when it’s part of the trip itself. What is it about travel that makes me feel so good? Apparently, it’s just getting away, after all, in this new age of remote working, where the home is also the office the work/life balance is becoming even more blurred. Many respondents said getting out of their ordinary environment, completely switching off and experiencing new cuisines, languages, and scenery allowed them to reset and recharge. Thinking local is here to stay While our travel was restricted to just domestic travel for the last 20+ months , many of us began to value the humble destinations closer to home and appreciate those special places on our own back door. We’ve fallen back in love with our own country and realised just how special it is, especially when it was relatively deserted. This is set to continue apparently even when the borders re-open.
New places, new experiences and new faces While we were very lucky to have been holed up in NZ and spent more time with our family, friends and whanau than we normally would have, however unsurprisingly, we are keen to get back to traveling internationally, seeing new places and faces, gather new experiences and meet the locals. We are acutely aware the impact of being unable to travel has had on many communities, 68% of us are keen to see the money we spend go back to the local community.
Technology will increasingly play a role in our travel choices Remote working has expedited the acceptance of technology like Zoom over lockdowns and the new working environment. As a result, we are more open to technology playing an increased role in our travel choices. 56% agree that technology helps with the anxiety associated with some travel experiences e.g losing money and being scammed. 64% would be interested in technologies that helps us stay safe when traveling and a similar percentage would like technology to suggest destinations that its easy to travel to based on the current Covid requirements. 2022 will be the year to start making up for lost holidays in a big way, with the number of travellers who feel they need to do so having increased by 52% since last year according to Booking.com research. If early airline demand seen in Australia is anything to go by there will be a rush to book our overseas travel as soon as a date for MIQ free travel is announced. I certainly won’t include two weeks in MIQ on the must do travel experiences however so that piece of the puzzle also needs to be announced. Seeking businesses keen to reduce their footprint Following the Wao Climate Action summit last month the organisers are seeking participants for a fully funded 12 week program to understand their companies carbon footprint and take action to reduce their emissions. Last week marked the kick off for The Wao Climate Action Initiative from local environmental not-for-profit group Wao Aotearoa who is seeking a cross section of local businesses to participate in the 12 week program that will equip them with the knowledge and tools to calculate their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and take action to reduce them. “Right now we need business to get involved’’ - says Wao Aotearoa board member and IPCC Lead Author Dr. Carly Green who is heading up the program. “We’re especially keen to work with a range of businesses that want to make measurable changes but may be unsure how to begin.”

Melissa Jenner, Matt Wong and Wendy van Leishout joined for the first time, while Scott Donaldson was re-elected and remains deputy chair.
There were 14 candidates for the board election, which was managed by independent election management company, Electionz.com.
Donaldson is a Senior Associate at the law firm Mactodd Lawyers, practicing in the areas of property, commercial and relationship property law. Melissa Jenner is the Founder of START Now, which specialises in innovation and design thinking, and has 25 years’ business experience working for the likes of Saatchi & Saatchi and Microsoft. Wendy van Leishout is the CEO of Active Adventures, NZ’s largest and most globally diverse adventure travel company, managing a team of 40 in Queenstown and 100 guides worldwide. And Matt Wong is owner of iFLY Indoor Skydiving NZ LTD and has held senior roles for Queenstown tourism, aviation and travel operations over the past 20 years. They join board chair Angela Spackman, CEO Ruth Stokes, Anthony King, Jo Finnigan, Karen Iremonger, and Hamish Walker on the board. Craig Douglas and Rik van Dijk had both stepped down after “contributing significantly to the Chamber” over the years, Spackman said. She also paid tribute to the late Sir Eion Edgar, the much-loved “businessman, investor, philanthropist, husband and father” and conferred a Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award for his “extraordinary contribution” to both the town and New Zealand as a whole.
The Chamber is once again taking the temperature of business in the district, as we look towards 2022. The final Business Confidence Survey for the year is open to all 610 members, and also members of Ignite Wanaka. Previous results have made for grim reading as businesses in the tourism-centric towns battled through the pandemic, with little to no revenue at points. But with mass vaccination continuing at pace and borders expected to reopen in the first quarter of next year, Chamber CEO Ruth Stokes believes the mood might be more optimistic, especially with Auckland coming out of lockdown. She told the AGM many believe there is light at the end of the tunnel, “which is not an oncoming train”. The survey questions businesses on key challenges, including staffing. It is open until close of business this Thursday, 25 November.
The fully funded program rolls off the back of the carbon workshops held at Wao Summit in October, which saw over 15 local businesses assess their carbon emissions. “From those 15 businesses alone we measured a staggering 3500 tonnes of CO2e” says Dr Green. “These businesses have measured the areas which contribute to their emissions and are now able to take active steps to reduce these emissions. The program has enabled change in the way they do business and they now have the support network and framework to measure the impact of those changes. These businesses have been so positively impacted by their experience, they are going to participate in this program by sharing their experience, what they have learnt and the changes they are making.” The program kickstarts with the first workshop held on December 6th, and interested businesses need to apply by the 24th of November. In the first phase business will ‘Calculate for Climate’ a period to set the overall context, gather data and measure emissions (previously known as “know your number”.) The program will resume after the summer holiday period with the second phase, known as ‘Fast Track to Neutral’ featuring a series of workshops and resources to help businesses work through emission reduction strategies and develop their own reduction response plan. To roll out the program, Wao Aotearoa is working with regional tourism organisations Destination Queenstown (DQ) and Lake Wānaka Tourism (LWT), and Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) who are jointly funding the project. Spirit of resistance: why Destiny Church and other New Zealand Pentecostalists oppose lockdowns and vaccination

Was anyone surprised when New Zealand’s self-made Apostle Brian Tamaki courted controversy and arrest by participating in two anti-lockdown protests in Auckland recently? Or that during one of these events he declared he would rather live in “dangerous freedom than peaceful slavery” and likened the directorgeneral of health to Hitler? This was, after all, the same Brian Tamaki whose Destiny Church followers wanted to reclaim Christchurch “for Jesus” in the immediate aftermath of the 2019 terrorist attacks. And who blamed the Christchurch earthquakes on “gays, sinners and murderers”. Those familiar with the branch of modern Christianity known as Pentecostalism would not have been surprised at all. Tamaki’s Destiny Church is part of the fastest-growing religious movement in the world, with an estimated 500 million adherents. Today the average Pentecostal is as likely to be Nigerian, Fijian, Korean or Brazilian as they are to be British, American, Australian or Kiwi. Aotearoa New Zealand is just one of many places Pentecostalism is flourishing. As well as the more prominent churches such as Destiny, City Impact, the Assemblies of God (AOG) and Elim, a host of smaller congregations exist throughout the country. Here and elsewhere, Pentecostals’ steadfast assertion that the raw power of the Holy Spirit will prevail over the principalities of darkness has run up against the cultural and environmental realities of the modern world.
A record of resistance Nowhere is this more obvious than in their responses to COVID-19. As nationstates have rolled out public health measures, Pentecostals have seemed unwilling and unable to accept epidemiological explanations and strategies. Tamaki’s actions are the tip of an iceberg of global resistance. Pentecostals have been at the forefront of legal pushbacks against gathering restrictions and insisted only the second coming of Christ would force churches to close their doors. They have proclaimed COVID cannot survive in the bodies of the faithful, declared a link between the virus and 5G mobile technology, and maintained the pandemic is God’s yardstick for distinguishing his loyal servants from pretenders. While these claims and interpretations can appear outlandish and dangerous, they are not entirely incomprehensible. Rather than view them as nonsense, it is more helpful to see them as a different kind of sense altogether.
Miracles and wonder Specifically, Pentecostal values are a religious response to the pandemic and a spiritualisation and demonisation of the virus. This goes directly to the Pentecostal obsession with the Holy Spirit. Pentecostalism is defined, above all, by its intense experientialism. More than any other Christian variant, it is concerned with saturating human existence in otherworldly power. The Pentecostal vocabulary is not one of ritual, liturgy or structure, but of ecstasy, surprise, miracles and wonder. From this standpoint, any stricture, rule or earthly imposition that impedes a life in the Spirit is, by default, suspect and anathema. This sets up an overall opposition between the spiritual and the worldly that helps define the difference between good and evil or God and Satan.
Defining Pentecostalism For the devoted Pentecostal, everything is either one or the other, and to be on the side of the world is to collaborate with the enemy. Several features of this theology directly shape Pentecostal responses to COVID-19. Triumphalism: Pentecostals are fearless combatants in a spiritual war against Satan. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate weapon in this charge, providing absolute confidence in a Biblically preordained victory. With its long shadow of sickness and fear, COVID-19 bears the Devil’s signature. Framed as an active demonic force, the virus is something that should not – must not – be feared. The triumphalism determined by a total faith in the Spirit to conquer evil immediately establishes an ethos that spurns caution, regulation and withdrawal. Deliverance and healing: The former expels demonic forces threatening wellbeing, while the latter cleanses a diseased body affected by those same powers. These religious tools are brought to bear against the pandemic, warding off the Satanic viral threat while healing the afflicted. Logically, vaccination becomes unnecessary, misguided and a betrayal of faith. Tribulation: Pentecostals are deeply concerned with the end of human history as the precursor to Christ’s return and the establishment of God’s paradisical kingdom. The Tribulation is a seven-year nightmare of evil and suffering featuring the rise of a nefarious “new world order”. Within this end times scenario, all humanity is branded with the mark of the beast, a process authorised by Satan. An apocalyptic plague and Satanic mandates for vaccination provide further prophetic justification for a pro-healing, antivaccination position. The Kingdom: Pentecostals are not huge fans of worldly entities and human rules. They prefer divine authority, spiritual inspiration and Biblically sanctified morality. The Kingdom of God is juxtaposed with the debased platforms of government and capitalism (even if countless Pentecostals embrace a divinely sanctioned materialism). Translated into the pandemic context, the continual legislative and policy directives of the government are, by virtue of their human origin, tainted with iniquity. As always, paramount trust must be placed in the Holy Spirit and the Bible.
Faith and science It may be tempting to see Pentecostalism as its own worst enemy by denying the science and leaving its followers vulnerable to epidemiological catastrophe. But it is also a relatively young branch of Christianity and not necessarily uniform in its beliefs. As has been observed elsewhere, “medical science and divine healing […] have never been considered mutually exclusive by the entire movement”. The question therefore becomes, can Pentecostalism reach a détente with the world, as mainstream Protestant, Anglican and Catholic churches have done? It would seem the tide can be turned, even if compelled by tragedy. For example, after the death of one of its congregants, the Pentecostal church at the centre of the largest sub-cluster of Auckland’s current Delta outbreak embraced vaccination, having initially denied its validity. This is a pattern now being repeated across many pockets of the Pentecostal world, albeit within a church still fixated on spiritual dynamism and miraculous cures. For now, however, it may take more than faith in worldly reason to persuade Brian Tamaki and his flock that vaccines and lockdowns are a blessing and not a curse.

DELIVERY DRIVER The European Bakery is a long established wholesale bakery with a fantastic reputation, we specialise in traditional European Breads and deliver in the early hours of the morning throughout Queenstown & Central Otago to cafes, restaurants, hotels & food stores. One of our superstar drivers is returning home so we are looking for someone to replace her. You will need to be a night owl and enjoy working independently, but still being part of a team. What you will need: • Full, clean drivers licence with the eligibility to drive in New Zealand. • Ability to drive a manual delivery truck. • A very good grasp of English, able to communicate well and solve problems with customers on the delivery run. • Physically fit, able to lift and deliver boxes of bread. • A head for logistics to enable a good, smooth delivery run. • Some bread packing may be required. • Cleaning duties – efficient and unsupervised. • Absolutely reliable and responsible.
