Bittersweet Symphony This Friday, the 12th of November is a big day for us at The Arts Centre - it’s the night of our annual Art Awards and it’s also very likely the night of our very last art awards at The Arts Centre… You’ve heard the news by now, our time here in our home of twenty years is running short, but that’s not what this tale is all about. This story isn’t about where, but why we do it. Friedrich Nietzsche said that, “The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude.” And for us as an artistic community our art awards are all about that, not art, but gratitude. Gratitude to the humble artists that toil in the solitude of creativity to emerge like springtime butterflies and gift to us, the fruits of their creation. Yes, this is a bittersweet night for us - it’s the end of an era. But we know it’s not the end of our community. When our Arts Centre shuts its door for the last time next year, we don’t want your tears - we want your gratitude, not for this place, but for our artistic community. And this Friday, it’s all about gratitude. Awards for creativity and the concept of competitive art is an easy one to misjudge - where winners and therefore losers are selected. But the reality is, it’s not about the best, it’s about the rising tide. The waves of creativity and winds of inspiration that are whipped up and sweep through the room.
1876 had a great day celebrating their 10th anniversary on Sunday. Ellie Booth, Molly Smith, Jim McCaffery & Joey Ellis helped make for a day to remember for everyone.
It’s easy to think of Queenstown as a place that needs to import its creativity. We’re at the metaphorical end of a one-way road at the far corner of the globe. But that’s not the case - our home has nurtured generations of artists many of which have been hiding in plain sight. And these awards are all about shining a light on these hard-grafting souls who don’t do it for the awards - but if we drill right down - they do it for you. They spend their lives creating so that your world is a little bit brighter and I think in these tough times, the world needs all the light we can gather.

The Queenstown ceremony marking the signing up to Welcoming Communities and 82 residents’ citizenship
Queenstown’s aim to be a home for all by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Lakes is officially a more welcoming place for everyone. Two small ceremonies were held outdoors in Queenstown and Wanaka last week, to formally sign commitment to the Welcoming Communities programme - Waharoa ki ngā Hapori. The Government-funded initiative aims to make places across New Zealand more welcoming, especially for migrant communities. The ceremonies also acknowledged 82 local residents recently becoming New Zealand citizens. Mayor Jim Boult said citizenship ceremonies are what he loves most about his job as Mayor, but unfortunately it was not possible to host a full citizenship ceremony, due to Covid-19 restrictions. Instead, a small group of community leaders were invited, and in Queenstown local waiata group Ngā Manu Hou (which means ‘the new birds’) sang. “New Zealanders have a reputation for being friendly, hospitable, and inclusive. The Welcoming Communities programme is about rolling out a welcome mat for all of our newcomers, recent migrants, former refugees, and international students,” Boult said.
“Over the coming months I will be connecting with our communities to understand and acknowledge what we already do well to welcome newcomers, and to develop a Welcome Plan to further enhance these initiatives. “For now, though, we are excited to welcome 82 new citizens. Our newest Kiwis come from all corners of the world, bringing with them a passion for Queenstown Lakes and all our place has to offer,” she said. Welcoming Communities Te Waharoa ki ngā Hapori is a government funded initiative led by Immigration New Zealand in partnership with the Ministry for Ethnic Communities and the Human Rights Commission. Councils and communities gain recognition as being welcoming to newcomers by progressing through four stages of accreditation. QLDC is currently at Stage 1 – a Committed Welcoming Community, having signed a Statement of Commitment on Tuesday 2 November 2021.
“We are formally acknowledging QLDC’s commitment to the Welcoming Communities standards, and are seeking better social outcomes, stronger economic growth, and an environment where everyone is able to participate in the economic, civic, cultural and social life of the community.” To mark the ceremony, a kauri tree was planted in Queenstown Gardens, and a pear tree was planted in Allenby Park in Wānaka. A Trees That Count gift card will also be sent to the 82 new citizens, and these trees will be planted in Queenstown Lakes District Welcome Forests. Silvia Dancose, the new Welcoming Communities Coordinator for the district, said the presence of community leaders and elected members at the two events was a reflection of how engaged and committed everyone is to making Queenstown Lakes a more welcoming and inclusive community. “The signing of the Statement of Commitment represents the initial phase of the Welcoming Communities programme,” Ms Dancose said.

Christmas cricket for Queenstown by Paul Taylor
Two games of the upcoming Dream11 Super Smash cricket games will be held at Queenstown Events Centre. John Davies Oval will host back-to-back games for the Otago Sparks and Otago Volts on Tuesday, 28 December, and Wednesday, 29 December. The first match begins at 11.10am and the second match at 2.40pm on both days. Tickets sold will be valid for both matches on game day. Simon Battrick, Queenstown Lakes District Council sport and recreation manager, says it’s a great win for the region to bring top class domestic cricket to one of the best looking grounds in the world. “We’re always trying to secure top class sport and events for the district,” Battrick says. “It’s a win and will provide a boost for the area following the cancellation of a number of popular local events due to Covid-19 restrictions. “We can’t wait to welcome cricket fans during the Christmas break.” The Dream11 Super Smash format will include men’s and women’s double-headers throughout the schedule. Tickets to the games on 28 and 29 December are now on sale at www.supersmash.co.nz. They start at $15 and family packages are available.
Nine weeks of big-hitting, fearless and fast-paced action will sort out the six men’s and six women’s teams as they battle for a spot in the finals.
The 17th edition of Dream11 Super Smash will see all 64 matches broadcast live on Spark Sport, with 40 matches broadcast free-to-air by TVNZ 1 and Duke.
The sudden death Elimination (2v3) Finals are set for Thursday, 27 January, and the 2022 Dream11 Super Smash Grand Final inked in for Saturday, 29 January.

TECHNOLOGY How to protect against phishing scams Have you ever received an email asking you to sign into your financial account, cloud services, or online email? What about one saying you have a package waiting for delivery and you should open the attachment for details? These are all recent phishing attempts cybercrooks are using to gain access to your private information. Phishing is a type of social engineering where an attacker sends a fraudulent message designed to trick another human victim into revealing sensitive information to the attacker or to deploy malicious software on the victim’s infrastructure like ransomware. A tech support scam is a form of Internet fraud that is gaining momentum on the Internet. The scam implements social engineering and fear tactics in order to get the victim to take the bait. There are three main ways this scam is executed- via cold calls, pop-up messages on the computer and incorrect search engine results.
Cold Calls Tech support cold calls are when an individual calls the target, claiming to be from a reputable company and states that they have found malware on the computer. The criminal will then try to get the user to install a type of remote desktop software under the pretext of removing the infestation, which would allow the attacker access to the computer in order to install real malware. In addition to attempting to install malware on the machine, these scammers will often ask for a fee to fix the issue.
Pop-Up Warnings Tech support pop-up warnings occur when a user is browsing the Internet. Usually, the target is viewing a website that contains links to related content, and when the user clicks on one of those links it will redirect them to a website hosting the pop-ups. These pop-ups can be terribly intrusive, making it difficult for the user to close the window. The pop-ups will then display a message stating that the computer is infected with malware and offer a phone number for help with removing the malware. Often, these pop-ups will look like they come from a legitimate source.
Advertising/ Paid Search/ Confusing Search Results: Fraudulent companies frequently use paid search to advertise their support services. When searching online, it is possible to receive different search results based on the search engine you are using.
Motivation: The main motives behind these scams are to extort the victim to gain money as well as installing malware such as keyloggers or backdoor Trojans in order to gain access to personal information.
How to Identify and Avoid Pop-Up and Cold-Calling Scams: Pop-ups: Examine the message closely- look for obvious signs of fraud such as poor spelling, unprofessional imagery, and bad grammar: You can also do an Internet search for the phone number that is listed in the pop up to verify its legitimacy: There are many websites where people report scammers. If it is indeed a scam, there will be an abundance of search results, often on the first page of the search, that clearly point out the scammer: Cold-call telephone scams: What to do if you think you have received a scam call: 1. If you receive an unexpected phone call that seems suspicious, the best action to take is to hang up. Do not share any personal information with the caller. 2. If the caller has told you they are from a particular company, ring the company (find their number elsewhere, don’t call back the number they called you from) and alert them to the call you have just received. They will let you know if it was a legitimate call.
What to do if you’ve been scammed: • • •
Change your passwords: to your computer, to financial institutions, to your internet security provider and any other password-protected websites that you visit. Run a Full System Scan for viruses on your computer. Contact your bank to report that there has been fraud performed on your account.

Total revenue hit US$65b, up from US$46b in the same quarter last year. Google search advertising contributed almost US$38b, up 44%, while YouTube advertising climbed 43% to US$7.2b. Revenue generated from Google Cloud increased 44% to US$4.9b. Profit in the three months to September hit US$18.9b, up from US$11.2b. Speaking to investors this morning, chief business officer Philipp Schindler said retail was “by far” the largest contributor to year-over-year advertising growth with media, entertainment, finance and travel also strong performers. But he said more advertisers were now adopting an omnichannel strategy rather than focusing purely online. “We have seen explosive growth in digital over the past 27 months but as the world begins to reopen shoppers are returning to stores,” he said. “Bricks and mortar isn’t dead. Yahoo pulls out of China, citing ‘challenging’ environment Yahoo Inc. has become that latest technology firm to pull out of China. It cited an increasingly challenging operating environment. The withdrawal was largely symbolic, as many of the company’s services were already blocked by China’s digital censorship. But recent government moves to expand its control over tech companies generally, including its domestic giants, may have tipped the scales for Yahoo. Yahoo is the latest foreign tech company to exit China. Google gave up several years ago, and Microsoft’s professional networking platform LinkedIn said last month it would shutter its Chinese site, replacing it with a jobs board instead. The departures illustrate the choices internet companies face in a huge potential market, but one where the government requires them to censor content and keywords deemed politically sensitive or inappropriate.

Hertz ordered 100,000 Tesla vehicles Rental car company Hertz has ordered 100,000 Teslas as part of an ambitious plan to electrify its fleet. A first tranche of Tesla’s Model 3 sedans will be available to rent from Hertz in major US and European markets from early November. The announcement comes just months after Hertz escaped bankruptcy. It’s the single-largest purchase ever for electric vehicles, or EVs, and represents about $4.2 billion of revenue for Tesla. Arts+Culture The joy of music with the Central Otago Regional Choir by Bethany Rogers
The Central Otago Choir are promising to blast away the Covid blues with a series of toe-tapping choral concerts this month. Choir member Allie Frude says the theme of the concerts is “joy”. “We want to brighten people’s lives. There’s a lot of negativity around at the moment and we want to bring joy to everyone who listens.
As a child, Rhiannon had to overcome problems with deformed vocal cords and needed surgeries. Despite these setbacks, she has grown to become a talented young soprano and a member of the Octagon Ensemble. She has been a member of the New Zealand Youth Choir (2017 – 2019), and has performed with Simon O’Neill and Anna Leese. “They are both inspirational young people,” says Allie.
“Music helps us to quickly forget all the negativity. Music takes over – it is such a wonderful feeling. And I think a lot of people need that at the moment because we’re bombarded with it. It’s understandable, but it’s not good for our mental health.
“The Central Otago Regional Choir has always championed young musicians and singers wherever we can. Our conductor Richard Madden has continued this tradition, creating a platform to showcase young talent and show new audiences what can be achieved.
“[…] I reckon the mental health of our choir is pretty darn good no matter what is going on. We love being together and sharing the music and we want to do the same for everyone else.”
“We’ve also got Dunedin pianist Sandra Crawshaw, who is brilliant, and Peter Doyle, who’ll accompany us on the really jazzy pieces – he’s quite a legend around here.
Though music is helping everyone to forget their worries, Allie says the choir has been practicing safely, with social distancing, and says the concerts will be conducted safely too – audience members will be socially distanced and required to wear masks.
“[…] We’re looking forward to performing. We’d love people to come along, put their worries aside and just enjoy this concert. We love performing for our audiences and we really hope this concert series brightens people’s lives.”

Principal says Ministry reneged on Queenstown school bus promise A primary school principal is calling out the Ministry of Education for reneging on a promise to stop children from standing on school buses in the Queenstown Lakes. Officials agreed in 2018 to end the practice of standing on buses following pressure from local schools amid concerns over the safety of children while travelling on roads with open speed limits. The ministry has since confirmed that students were allowed to stand on school buses but operators would need to regularly report on any standing passengers following new contracts coming into effect in January. It has prompted Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult to contact the prime minister and other government ministers calling for the practice to end, saying it was inherently unsafe and an irresponsible protocol. Hāwea Flat School principal Tania Pringle said officials had backtracked on their promise. Her primary school did not allow the practice on their buses because of safety concerns for students travelling on roads with speed limits of up to 100 kilometres an hour. “They are more country roads, they are not as well groomed as your big state highways like State Highway 1. There are pieces that are gravel and have an uneven camber on them and in the winter we obviously have a significant amount of ice.” The practice was happening on other local school buses, she said. “There’s a lot of five, six, seven-year-olds. Those children seated aren’t able to touch the ground when sitting properly on the seats. If you’re putting three to a seat, they struggle to ... put their back against the back rests,” Pringle said. “There’s no arm rest to hold them in so that’s easy to hang over the aisle. If the bus was to suddenly stop, there’s very little to actually stop them from going flying so if children were standing that would be even worse.” Her school has three buses offering 135 seats. But 210 students - 70 percent of the school’s roll - were eligible for the school bus. “We are going through a sustained period of growth for our school so on a regular basis we are having to review what bus provision we’ve got.” She approached the Ministry of Education for another bus, but said she was told they provide one because she couldn’t show that students were regularly stand up on buses even though there could be three children to a seat. To meet that threshold, the bus would need to be filled to maximum loading capacity - about 65 children seated and 10 standing. “We are not willing to do that and we are not willing to allow our children to do that so because that’s not happening on a daily basis, the Ministry of Education has said that we don’t need any more bus provisions and they’re not willing to review it.” Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult was fired up about the issue he thought had been resolved. It has been more than three years since Waka Kotahi informed him that the Secretary for Education had decided to stop the practice and the Ministry of Education was working on that directive with an expected cost of around $20 million a year.

It was time to act on an issue that had long put tamariki needlessly at risk, he said. “We live in an area with challenging road conditions, particularly during the long winter months. I find it hard to imagine that anyone would contemplate allowing children to stand on buses at all, let alone on open roads. This surely cannot be a practice which is condoned.” He has been in correspondence with Waka Kotahi about the issue since 2018, but said he has recently been given the run around by various government departments while trying to stop the practice. More recent correspondence with Waka Kotahi included advice that while school buses were involved in 529 crashes between February 2000 and February 2020, no pupils had been killed. “I’m sure a five-year old standing on a school bus travelling rural roads at 90km per hour would feel much safer knowing that they stand a good chance of surviving if their bus is one of the 26 crash average per year,” Boult said in the letter. He also urged the government to include seat belts on school buses. “As parents, and as ministers with accountability to our children and their safety, I implore you to act. While thankfully no children have died in these 529 crashes, shouldn’t we do everything in our power to prevent any child from becoming the first one? Aren’t we responsible for making sure they can travel to school each and every day safe from the chance of harm and injury?”
New contracts Ministry of Education infrastructure and digital leader Scott Evans said new contracts would come into effect next January after asking bidders to confirm they could provide enough seats to cater for expected numbers of eligible students. The contracts were due to expire at the end of last year but they were extended by one year to allow time to update the procurement process and make sure there were opportunities for smaller, regional suppliers, he said.
He has sent a letter to the Prime Minister and other ministers, saying he was disappointed and shocked when schools informed him that a significant number of children would stand in the aisles under the new school bus tender arrangements.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
We’ve had nearly five days of freedom already and it’s gone at lightning speed (no wonder, given how many years it takes for a single day to pass in MIQ!) I’ve been terrifically busy doing important things like watching my little fantail family who’ve built a luxurious home on our back verandah. SO clever - they’ve built it round a large hook that hangs from the ceiling so no predators of the winged or furred variety can reach them, the rain and wind can’t touch them and there’s a handy washing line where the parent who isn’t sitting on the eggs can perch and chat to their friends. The only problem they have is the nosy owners of the house spying on them. I have to climb a ladder and hold my phone at the right angle to get photos of them. I’d be furious if I found people doing that to me, and I do try to stop snooping, but it’s a struggle. Just to teach me a lesson, they are leaving a LOT of fantail poop around - I’m sure they could wait and do it in the garden - I can’t imagine a fantail having a spiteful thought but... And the garden might be feeling a little spiteful too. I’m constantly bothering my peonies who have all considerately waited for my return home to do their magnificent, colourful explosions, and giving them a sharp shock from my secateurs. One of my lovely friends had put a tiny vase of the last of my lily of the valley by my bed, such a perfect surprise on my first night back home.

Even though I’ve been trying to keep up with local goings on, it’s been a shock to see the issues I’ve been hearing about for myself. Beach Street is STILL not open - honestly, how is that even possible? Has there not been anything happening there? And I got hopelessly lost trying to get from Raeward Fresh to Marine Parade - almost every street a no entry and no sign of anyone at work anywhere. I was trying to get to Botswana Butchery where there had been a very tempting invitation - lunch all afternoon and the Melbourne Cup, too. I couldn’t bear the thought of being inside, when I’d had two weeks dreaming of outside, so I declined, but agreed to come and pick up my mother immediately after the race. Fat chance - lots of fun and naughty people to laugh and chat with, and so good to hear about all the great things that are happening in the Wakatipu. Immediately after the race turned out to be over two hours after the race. Not exactly immediate. It’s good to hear the private hospital is roaring ahead. I’m a massive fan of the public one and have only praise and gratitude for their staff and services when I know what they have to deal with. It’s great to have so many more services available privately here instead of having to go to Dunedin or Invercargill and taking up valuable space in the public system.Being able to get a bone density scan at Form Imaging in the Five Mile the day after getting home - how good is that!! Every day I’m told about different exciting things happening my calendar is bulging - Ben Baker is playing at the Lodge at The Hills on November 12th - how lucky are we having world famous violinists just popping into our tiny town? And Corazon Latino is playing at the Blue Door on the 14th. I haven’t seen a movie in months and there are so many brilliant ones now that the northern hemisphere cinemas are all open again. Dorothy Browns is hosting a premiere event for Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” which got standing ovations all over the world, and loads of Wakatipu locals were involved in it. Life in the basin is never boring.

“Under the current Covid-19 guidelines, the event would have to be limited to 100 participants,” Norris said. “We couldn’t hold the briefing or the prizegiving. Our choices were to cancel or to postpone the event. The race brings a couple of thousand of people to Te Anau, which is good for the town and its businesses, so we didn’t want to cancel.” Race Secretary, Rachel White, said 300 people are on the waiting list. “I am contacting those people trying to fill those spots back up, but we have not made up for the number withdrawn yet,” she said. This is the third time in a row members of The Kepler Challenge Mountain Run Trust and organising committee have to face serious dilemmas of whether to go ahead with the event and in what format, due to Covid and also flooding. The decision follows the postponement or cancellation of many major South Island events, including Queenstown Marathon, Queenstown Pride, Queenstown Research Week, the Burt Munro Challenge, and Southern Field Days near Gore.
Iconic Te Anau event The Kepler Challenge is the latest event to be postponed due to the Covid-19 situation. Following on from the Queenstown Marathon, which has been pushed back to March, the mountain run has been moved from December to 15 January 2022. Race Director Steve Norris said about half the field has withdrawn after being notified of the change. Of the 450 registered for the Challenge, 200 have withdrawn, and of the 200 signed up for the Grunt, 60 have pulled out.

Composting – All you ever wanted to know What can we compost? Dog composter and a simple composting technique. There can be such conflicting information out on the interweb of too much knowledge. It’s a bit of a lottery sometimes to find the correct information you’re looking for, with so many opinions, points of view and schools of thought. So with that in mind here are some questions I often get asked, and my thoughts and opinions. Look out below for dog composter and trench composting instructions.
So what can you actually compost? Well everything that lived once before can get to live again through the making of compost. Including all organic matter, from all food scraps to cotton to wool clothing to prunings to dog hair to serviettes and cardboard.
I keep hearing people talk about carbon rich ingredients, what are they talking about? Most compost problems are caused by a lack of carbon rich ingredients in the mix. A simple way to think of carbon ingredients are things that are very dead, often dry and not very smelly. Serviettes, shredded cardboard or newspaper, woodchips, prunings, deadheaded flowers, cabbage tree leaves and straw. These carbon ingredients should make up at least 50% of your compost heap. One approach is to have carbon rich ingredients sitting next to the compost bin. Everytime you throw your food scraps in you can grab a similar amount of the carbon rich ingredient, mix them all up with a garden fork, a sprinkle of water and hey presto, we’re making compost.
Name three things I could do to improve my compost heap?
I heard we shouldn’t put cooked food into compost as it will attract vermin?

Well yes, this is true, but then so does uncooked food. In fact a compost heap with no food often attracts vermin as it’s a warm cosy place to call home.

We have to trap and bait rats and mice to stop them getting into our compost heaps. Turning often will also disrupt them. You can vermin proof a compost heap with very small holed mesh on all five sides, including the floor, and a vermin proof lid. So the conclusion to this question is- all food scraps cooked and uncooked, meat and fish bones, absolutely everything goes into the compost heap. We mentioned vermin but is your compost bin labrador proof?
What about onion skins and lemon/orange peel? These are antibacterial by nature and are hard to break down. Here we need to chop them up as small as we can be bothered. The smaller the easier and quicker these two ingredients will eventually break down.
Meat and fish bones do they go in? Hell yeah, in it goes. Bigger bones can take a long time to break down and may need to go into the next heap.
You mention clothing, can I put my husband’s Crocs in? Alas no, they are back in high indestructible, non-organic fashion. Old cotton T-shirts and holey merino tops can be cut up into smaller pieces and thrown in the compost heap. Just cut out the nylon thread around the collar cuffs and any joins.
I’ve got loads of weeds. These have gotta be good for the compost heap? Yes they are, and sometimes no, they’re not. Any weeds in flower or seed are a big no no as we will spread these around the garden at a later date. Otherwise chuck them weeds in.
Add compost worms Put a cover on it. This could be an old bit of builders black plastic or similar.It helps to keep moisture in the heap. Water the heap edge once a week. Do the moisture test. Give a big squeeze of a handful of compost, you should get moisture between the knuckles and a few drops. That’s 55% moisture levels!!!!
Can I put my cat litter and doggie doos into the compost heap? This is a big no no!! Cat litter/poos should be flushed down the toilet or into the refuse. There are a few diseases we can catch from spent cat litter. Dogs aren’t as bad but still best to avoid putting in your compost unless you’re a master hot composter. Instead you can either bury in amongst non-food shrubs or better still create an inground dog composter. Instructions below. Trench composting. It doesn’t get any simpler and easier, no plastic buckets, no special magical powders, just you and a shovel in the garden. You can do this in the veggie garden, but also anywhere else you can dig a hole or a trench. You can add extra carbon mixed through the food scraps if you want, with serviettes, damp shredded newspaper/cardboard etc. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Dig a hole or a trench approximately 30cm deep and wide. Put food scraps in. Cover with a generous amount of soil. Repeat. If you opt for the trench keep adding and covering till you reach the end of the trench.

Size of the composter you make depends on the size of the dog. A 20 litre bucket for a small dog and a 50 litre black bin for a medium to big dog. Cut out the bottom of the bin/bucket. Drill multiple holes around the side of the bin/bucket randomly. Find a spot tucked away in the garden in a berm or similar. (It needs to be away from the water table if you have one.) Dig a hole and place the bin/bucket in hole till it’s almost level. You need to leave enough room to take the lid on and off. Backfill dirt to the sides so it’s snugly set in place. Take the remaining soil and find a new home for it. You’re ready to go. Put dog poops in daily and sprinkle with Zing Bokashi. Available from hardware stores and QLDC council offices or online at zingbokashi.co.nz. The Zing Bokashi powder is a biological activator that will deal with smells and help break the poo down. Eventually the bin will fill up. Pull out the bin/bucket, cover the hole with dirt and start again. That original hole will be a nutrient bomb of goodness for nearby shrubs and trees. Got a smelly bin/bucket? Chucking in extra Zing Bokashi for a few days should sort this out.

Tightening restrictions around how banks lend to businesses has opened the door for a new Queenstown-based investment business. Paul Carman founded Private Capital Group about two years ago, returning to New Zealand after 25 years working in London for Japanese mega-bank Mizuho. The private debt management and equity investment firm intends to operate in the space created by the ding-dong between the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the country’s four major banks, all Australian owned. RBNZ has increased the ratio of capital banks must keep in reserve, which has made them more selective about which companies they lend money to. Carman says that’s something he’s seen play out across the world in the past decade, as regulators have increased the capital requirements for banks post-GFC. “In the States, 20 years ago almost all lending was provided by banks,” he says. “Today, 80% of the lending to what the market refers to as ‘crossover’ or ‘sub-investment grade’, companies perceived as higher risk, is now done by Funds, not by banks. “In the UK it is two-thirds, but in New Zealand it’s a big fat zero. Everything has been done by the banks.” PCG plans to help fill the gap as the banks operating in NZ pull back from certain types of lending. It will raise funds from wholesale investors, both overseas and domestic, and use them, through a series of managed Funds, to provide loans to handpicked Kiwi SMEs and corporates.
“We are Kiwis for Kiwi businesses’” Carman ran the global sponsor and acquisition platform for Mizuho, with 150 people in teams in London, New York, Hong Kong and Sydney. He was also responsible for managing about NZ$7 billion of private debt and equity as chief investment officer of the bank’s third-party fund management business Mizuho Investment Management Ltd. But the opportunity to be one of the first firms serving an NZ market, potentially worth $25 billion, was too good to miss. After serving a 12-month no compete, he established PCG and brought on board chief

investment officer John Ferrara, another former Mizuho corporate alumni and more recently ASB, and chief governance officer Luke Ryan, who’d worked in the USA, Australia and Europe, and for Graeme Hart’s Rank Group. The PCG team has spent the past two years speaking to off-shore and NZ investors, the Overseas Investment Office, the IRD, the banks themselves, trustees, lawyers and accountants, setting up the business and a series of investment structures. They’ve recently moved into offices in The Mountaineer building and hope to have their first Fund up and running in Q1 of 2022, Covid permitting. Four other experienced finance high-flyers are waiting in the wings to relocate to Queenstown and join the company, once the fund completes.

Carman says Queenstown allows the PCG to express its difference from what has been a fairly cookie-cutter type market historically in NZ. “Rather than expecting companies to pitch up and meet us in what’s often an unfamiliar environment, we want to be able to jump in the truck and go a see a business, see what it does, how it operates and to more fully understand it. “Then we can much better match the finance and capital we’re providing to what the business actually needs.”
Queenstown was chosen as a base to provide a little distance and allow PCG to complement rather that compete against the Auckland based banks. “In reality, we’ll be working NZ-wide and diversified across sectors, helping companies with good cashflows and presence in the various sectors including services, healthcare, tech, some agri and a range of others. “At the same time, we are keen to find ways to support the local community and economy. Things like the planned tech hub at Remarkables Park, the proximity to Otago University and the depth of overseas and domestic experience which exists in the wider region provides some genuine opportunities which we’re interested in because

Good Service is THE difference My garden needed attention with early spring. I had bought a number of trees and to protect them from the ravages of the strong southerlies we get, especially at this time of the year in Queenstown, I needed some stakes to support them. Due to previous experiences, I needed longer ones to properly support young trees in their early years. So, started the hunt for 50 treated pine stakes 3 metres long. A couple of hours of frustration on various web sites and follow up phone calls, it was clear that nobody supplied stakes longer than 1.8 metres. So, I got onto emailing a variety of contactsbuilders who might know subbies or suppliers, landscape gardeners, landscape architects who might have contacts- but all I got was either no reply or no leads. So, what now? I jumped in the car (the trees will sequester the exhaust fumes) and go speak, in person, to local building supply companies. Well, that was interesting - and was heading for a clean sweep of disappointment until I made my last call to Building Supplies Company – Carters in Glenda Drive. I quickly wished I had visited them out the outset. 10 minutes after putting my mask on and signing in with my QR code I had secured what I needed. I was introduced to a buyer, she listened to me, made a phone call, secured the price, and delivery, offered me a trailer, took a deposit, and had me leaving with a big smile under the mask. I will use Carters in Glenda Drive next time I need a product or service that they have expertise in.
The reason for this story is because it demonstrates the importance of the type, depth and relevance of the service that customers can gets from a product or service supplier – in my case it was a superior experience for me – I ended up with what I needed – on time, below budget and with no hassles. I will be a repeat customer – and I will spread the word (referral) – hence this story. It hasn’t let any go due to Covid. “I was ready to pack it in after the first lockdown, but last July was the busiest we’ve ever had.
“Kiwis have been really good to us, and I’m really hopeful for 2021. We’re still around and are not going anywhere, but we’re in consolidation mode until they release the Aucklanders.” Ardern, in a press conference on Saturday, confirmed Aucklanders will be able to travel domestically over the summer, at some point. Queenstown businesses can see the Covid-19 finish line in sight. But owners, managers and staff have a taxing few months ahead as they adjust to the complexities of vaccine passes, the traffic light system and changing levels of support from Government, all while revenue remains low. ‘My Vaccine Pass’ will be a QR code people carry on their phones, or print out, to be scanned by places in NZ that require proof of vaccination.
McDonald says Skyline and other businesses will also need to work through how it impacts on staff in headquarters and other offices, some of whom regularly visit the customer-facing sites. But he’s not expecting much blowback from staff. “We’ve not been able to check people’s status, although I note in this new legislation we will have to ask staff... but for Queenstown, our double vax rate is high, and single is very high, so if you extrapolate that to the site...
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has already confirmed that will include large public gatherings, such as festivals and sports events, hospitality venues including restaurants and bars, and business premises involving close personal contact.
“I’d imagine there’ll be one of two people we need to have a discussion with, to explain the Government’s proposal.
Some other locations are under review, with a full list expected the middle of this month.
Simon Smith, co-owner of haunted house business Fear Factory, is in a similar position.
The need for proof will be attached to a place, not an employer, which means it will cover staff, customers, contractors, suppliers and anyone who visits a site. Skyline CEO Geoff McDonald says he expects to consult with staff this week about the changes.
“I guess everybody in town is having a bit of a think about where they fall in terms of the categories,” McDonald says. “For our sites in Queenstown and Rotorua, the gondola access is pretty close quarters and we’ve a number of staff interacting pretty closely with customers, in hospitality, food and beverage, luge instruction etc. “So we’re thinking at the moment that will include us.” Those that are not covered automatically will be given a framework against which they use to decide whether they need to require a vaccination pass. Government is expected to push through legislation by December 1, to help protect businesses against legal challenges by staff and customers.
“They’ll have a week or so to think that through but I think a high proportion are double vaccinated.”
All 11 Fear Factory staff, which includes his coowner brothers and parents, have already been vaccinated, without the need for a mandate. “Lucky for me they were all very enthusiastic,” Smith says. Fear Factory would likely fall through the cracks of any overview of premises, as it doesn’t serve food, alcohol or have mass gatherings, but does have close proximity. Smith reckons the closest equivalent is a hairdresser, with limited contact between staff and customers, although at the moment actors are two metres away.
“But we’ll just jump through whatever hoops we need to, to make it work. We want customers to be comfortable as well.”
That could see ‘My Vaccine Pass’ needed for travel too, once all DHBs have 90%+ vaccination rates and the country moves to the traffic light system. McDonald believes even that system could be temporary protection, while driving people to get vaccinated. “I’d be very surprised even to see the traffic lights being used beyond Q1 or Q2 of next year, I really would. “Once we’re way up above 90% double vaxxed, and international visitors have to be to get in, you’d think the risk would dissipate and we should be getting back to somewhere near normal. “I hope that is the case because I know a lot of businesses won’t survive another quarter of this. Everyone in town knows how bad it is. “With Auckland out of the market is has been pretty dead. We thought August to December was going to be tough, and it has, it’s been very very poor.” McDonald says Government support cannot continue indefinitely and the economy and the country can’t be “held hostage any longer” by those reluctant to get vaccinated. “We just need to get on with it, and get opened back up, start travelling and trading.” Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Ruth Stokes, meanwhile, says the range of businesses she’s spoken to welcome the vaccine pass system. “They appreciate there will be some complexities associated with the implementation, for instance, does that mean they need an extra person to be monitoring it, but they also know that embracing that system is the economically sensible thing to do. “It means the return of customers and that is now on the horizon. The end really is in sight.” The Chamber continues to push for the early release of Tourism Kick-Start Fund payments.
Both Smith and McDonald say the past few months since lockdown have been tough, although bolstered by Government support. “There’s definitely been a huge drop in business since not having Auckland around, it does suck.”

Queenstown Airport Corporation bosses don’t expect trans-Tasman flights to return until at least April next year. QAC chair, Adrienne Young-Cooper, in her update to shareholders at the recent AGM, outlined the impact the the loss of international and domestic passengers over the first full Covid financial year. In FY21, there were 1.33 million passenger movements, down 29% compared to FY20, and 42% down compared to FY19. Domestic passenger movements at ZQN were actually up 2%, but international passenger movements were down 96%. That led to a significant drop in revenue – down 40% to $27.8 million from $46.7 million. And the company’s reported Net Profit After Tax was down 91% to $1.6m from $18m the previous financial year.
Reopening Auckland and the trans-Tasman is “critical to a sustainable recovery”, Young-Cooper said. “While there is much conjecture, we hope Auckland flights will return in time for Christmas,” she said. “However, we aren’t expecting trans-Tasman flights to operate to and from Queenstown until at least April 2022. “We are of course prepared for an earlier restart of Tasman flights and will welcome them as soon as the government decides the risks are acceptable.” She was speaking 17 weeks after the Tasman bubble popped, and 10 weeks since the last scheduled flight had arrived from Auckland.
Young-Cooper said a big part of the airport’s business “simply does not exist” until the free flow of international travel recommences. And 95% of total revenue is linked to domestic and international passengers. Therefore, she said, a key element of QAC’s forward focus will be on the diversification of revenue sources not directly related to passenger numbers from scheduled air services, but did not elaborate on what that might be. Debt increased by $13m to $85m (25% of net assets). That was mainly due to the $18.3 million payment to Porter Group for the acquisition of the ‘Lot 6’ land adjacent to the main runway. Over the year, the priority had been to stabilise the business, safeguard its ability to operate vital airport infrastructure, and support the whole airport community. While there had been multiple job losses, and no dividend payments to majority shareholder QLDC and minority Auckland Airport, QAC had not required an equity contribution from shareholders.

Women in Business Series The Queenstown Chamber of Commerce launched its new ‘Women in Business Series’ in partnership with Queenstown Airport last week with the first monthly morning tea. The new series came about after the success of the annual Chamber’s Women in Business Conference and the desire to support, empower, and connect women through a range of events showcasing prominent local and national business leaders. Chamber of Commerce CEO Ruth Stokes was delighted that they were able to kick off a series of events designed and delivered by women, for women, that can provide an opportunity to learn, laugh, empower and recognise the phenomenal talent among us. Sara Irvine, GM Corporate and Community Affairs at Queenstown Airport, said “Last Friday’s event was a great start to the series. It was awesome to have more than 50 local women come together.” The guest speaker was Wānaka-based professional director, Anne Urlwin, who sits on six boards, including Queenstown Airport. Anne presented her insights and reflections on governing in a pandemic. Anne joined the board of Queenstown Airport late last year in the midst of the pandemic. At the time she said to the team that she “was probably the ultimate mystery shopper over many years with all my travelling in and out of the airport.” Anne’s governance experience includes infrastructure, energy, construction, telecommunications, insurance, health, and financial services. A few themes emerged as she reflected on her experience over the last 18 months. “Firstly the 3 Rs of risk, response, and resilience. Before we’d heard much about Covid-19 I’m not sure many businesses had a pandemic on their risk register.” And while Anne believes the 3 Rs are still relevant, she thinks there are 3 Fs that are becoming particularly so. Fear, fatigue, and frustration. Ultimately, Anne said the experiencing of governing in a pandemic came down to the importance of people because business is all about people. A key reflection for Anne was the common challenges across all the organisations she is involved with, no matter the industry, and that was the impacts on people and grappling with working from home, stress, burnout, tiredness, and restructures. “Some people have been in crisis mode for 18 months now. Everyone in this room is capable of stepping up in a crisis but stepping up and dealing with one for that long is something different.” Anne noted the importance of wellbeing and checking in with people, giving them the chance to talk about how they were feeling - which isn’t easy over a computer screen. She highlighted the importance of asking people what they needed, recognising we’re all different and respond in different ways through these difficult times.

Anne’s closing sentiment was one of positivity, that while there are still many challenges to be faced, she is “confident that the wonderful and supportive community in this region – including those in this room – will grab opportunities that the “new normal” will bring.” The next Woman in Business Series event is a lunch on Friday 19 November with Dame Therese Walsh, Chair of Air New Zealand and ASB, and a board member of Antarctica New Zealand. She will speak about her career journey reflecting on some of the challenges, triumphs, and lessons learnt along the way.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has maintained its ‘low risk’ status following a successful International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) assessment. Every two years, councils across New Zealand undertake the assessment, with an assessor and technical experts marking each council against building accreditation regulations. The assessment and accreditation was necessary for QLDC to issue building consents, code of compliance certificates, and to continue with building services functions. QLDC Building Services Manager, Chris English said the outcome of the assessment was a great achievement for Council. “With only four general non-compliance issues to resolve this year, compared with 14 in 2019, we’re one of only a few Building Consent Authorities to be sitting at such an effective level.” IANZ accreditation will be confirmed once the four outstanding general noncompliance issues are resolved.
