Is council listening to community concerns? A number of residents in the areas encompassing Suburb Street, Frankton Road, Coronation Drive, Park Street, Friends of the Gardens and others have met with council planners and engineers, (the only councillor ever to attend any of these meeting is Craig Fergusson— greatly appreciated) to try and convince the planners that the proposed cycle track route in the area is not in the best interests of the community (cyclists, visitors, walkers and residents). It involves the destruction of many trees & the effect on the gardens is not acceptable. It also goes against the Council’s 10 Year Plan which emphasises the importance of the environment i.e. reducing greenhouse gas emissions (trees soak up these gases as opposed to concrete)!!!! Our concerns have been ignored and at the last zoom meeting (08/10/21) an attempt was made by the residents, Friends of the Gardens & cycle representatives to change the route and reduce the number of trees requiring removal & the gradient of the track for cyclists & the interaction with other users (pedestrians — old and young). The planners justified their original route with a scoring system that was just a joke when better alternatives were expressed. We were just not listened to!!! We have received a reply from the Mayor’s office to our concerns, which we believe was not written by him, attempting to justify the scoring system & their plans. We quote from the last paragraph of this letter — “You are correct that work is still progressing on the balance of the track between Frankton and the Queenstown Gardens. This project also includes the construction of a new wastewater pump sewer main, and replacement/relining of the existing gravity sewer main. Work is ongoing on the business case for this project with preliminary design currently in progress. Consultation is yet to commence on the part of the network. As above we remain committed to engaging with all parties. At this stage we expect to be able to bring a paper to Full Council with intent to recommence works on the selected option in the New Year”. We do not want to be cynical but is this another “fait accomplis”? We have had experiences of another meeting, 16/06/2007 where a different council rationalised a plan for Park Street & Gardens reserve. This was done with consultation with 17 members of the public and the proposals put forward, which are still significant today including; parking, lighting, access, boat sheds, fore shore and tree management & importantly the Outcome!!! The Council of 2007 listened to an independent expert & to its citizens which does not seem to be occurring in 2021 — hopefully it changes for the better before 2022. We think we are right in assuming that many members of the community are not being listened to by the Council despite the community’s genuine concerns & good ideas.

The TSS Earnslaw docked in Queenstown

Queenstown’s historic steamship the TSS Earnslaw could soon be powered by something other than coal. A feasibility study is under way to investigate whether the ship, which was 109 years old last week, can become carbon neutral or carbon zero. Options include wood pellets and bio-diesel fuel, both carbon neutral, or carbon zero power sources such as renewable hydrogen fuel, batteryelectric or fully electric. The TSS Earnslaw, the oldest passenger-carrying coal-powered steamship in the Southern Hemisphere, is owned and operated by Real Journeys, a subsidiary of RealNZ (recently rebranded from Wayfare). But its environmental impact was highlighted in June, when Otago Regional Council’s first Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory estimated it was responsible for 1% of Queenstown Lakes District’s transport-related greenhouse gas emissions. The inventory estimated the much-loved Queenstown icon smoked out 4076 tonnes of ‘carbon dioxide-equivalent’ between July 2018 and June 2019. Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is a standard unit for counting greenhouse gas emissions, regardless of whether they’re from carbon dioxide or another gas, such as methane.
The ship’s original boilers will soon be more than 110 years old and will need replacing, requiring the vessel to be out of the water for an extended period of time. “That would be the obvious time to implement a carbon neutral or carbon zero solution,” says England-Hall. “We will essentially look for a new source of heat to generate steam that replaces the coal. The aim is to keep the engine room fully operational and intact.” On her 109th anniversary, RealNZ CEO Stephen England-Hall will be announcing that as part of RealNZ’s commitment to conserving the national icon for future decades, it was exploring alternative ways to generate steam to fuel the steamship. RealNZ has established a TSS decarbonization team, made up of RealNZ Head of Asset Management Chris Fleck, TSS Earnslaw Chief Engineer Peter Dorrington and Project Engineer Sander Kristensen. It has already looked across both the process heat and marine industries at alternative ways to fuel the steamship. England-Hall says the technology required is advancing all the time and preserving the steamship’s authenticity makes it a complex project.
Gross emissions for the Queenstown Lakes District were estimated at 600,895 tonnes of CO2e, with transport accounting for 45% of that.
“Conservation for us, is about conserving our history as well as our natural heritage.
RealNZ CEO Stephen England-Hall says the ship is a significant part of New Zealand’s history.
“The grand old ‘Lady of the Lake’ has been respectfully maintained and operated by RealNZ for the last 50 years, so as always, we will be proceeding with care.
“But as responsible kaitiaki, we have to weigh up every inch of her heritage value with our ambition to protect and preserve the places where we operate.”
“But we’re looking forward to finding ways the TSS Earnslaw can operate sustainably – for the next 100 years.”

Marathon moves to March by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Marathon has been postponed until March next year. Organisers confirmed the event has been moved from 20 November, 2021, due to the extension of Covid-19 restrictions across New Zealand. It will instead be run on Saturday, 19 March, 2022. Race Director Keegan McCauley says: “Support for this year’s Queenstown Marathon has been incredible and while we know that this news will be frustrating and disappointing for our runners. “Hopefully the move will give them more time to prepare and reach their goals as they take on Queenstown’s flat out beautiful course.”
An unvaccinated person, with links to the Te Awamutu cluster in the Waikato, flew into Blenheim on Friday from Rotorua. The man visited a couple of supermarkets, a pharmacy, bakery and Mitre10 before testing positive. But his close contacts and hundreds of community tests taken over the weekend, so there is cautious optimism there has been no forward transmission. There were 293 community cases confirmed over the long weekend, including Labour Day, the vast majority in Auckland but also a 14 in Waikato and 7 in Northland.
The postponement came a day after the Government revealed its new Covid-19 Protection Framework, which introduces a new traffic light system once district health board areas reach 90% vaccination rate. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult welcomed the traffic light system but said there needs to be a clearer pathway for moving to it, with an 80% target more realistic. He also said Government was too ambiguous over when Aucklanders would be able to travel domestically. “Central Government has done a fantastic job in keeping us one of the safest places to be during this pandemic,” Boult said. “But it’s my belief that the country is now looking for more surety than this announcement has provided. I hope that it will be swiftly forthcoming.” Marathon weekend would have been one of the district’s busiest of the year and the postponement is another blow for businesses. On Saturday, a day after the race was postponed, the first community case of Covid-19 in the South Island for more than a year was confirmed.

Street upgrade news Beach Street update After seven months of investigating and replacing the network of underground services, lower Beach Street has new water, wastewater and stormwater pipes to service the town centre for many years to come. The concrete has been poured and we’ve started laying the final surface of granite pavers. By Christmas the street will be paved and ready for a busy summer season. Some finishing touches will be completed in February next year.

Underground services are also now complete on Upper Beach Street so we can now start rebuilding. A concrete base will be laid by Christmas and the street will be clean and clear for the summer holidays. The paving crew will return to complete the final surface from 24 January.

Other updates PARK STREET is on track to be largely completed ahead of Christmas with some finishing touches applied to the street in the new year. Work to upgrade BRECON STREET is underway - the new street will have wide shared paths, completing the important connection from Gardens to Gondola. A complicated piece of work to upgrade the underground services along MAN STREET is almost complete – the new stormwater and water pipes had to be woven between 35 other pipes under the ground! The upgrade of REES STREET will begin in February 2022. We will meet with Rees Street business owners in November to talk through the construction programme.
Arterial underway Construction of the long-awaited Queenstown Town Centre Arterial Road started on 27 September. This major milestone started with the construction of a stormwater outfall into Lake Whakatipu and a new stormwater line along Suburb Street, from Park Street to Frankton Road. We expect this work to take approximately three months

Investigation works in Queenstown for NZUP Site investigations for the Queenstown Package of the NZ Upgrade Programme have started with crews completing geotechnical investigations along sections of Ladies Mile and at the Frankton roundabout. The works on State Highway 6 will shape the design of the project which is to build a bus lane along Ladies Mile through to the Shotover River bridge to serve the adjacent residential areas. The lanes will help prioritise travel by public transport on SH6 and it will be supported by targeted bus priority measures on SH6A, from Frankton to Queenstown’s town centre.

World’s largest companies to pay more under global tax overhaul The world’s biggest companies like Facebook and Johnson & Johnson face an extra collective tax bill of hundreds of billions of dollars after 136 countries last week signed a detailed plan to overhaul international corporate tax rules. The U.S., the U.K., China, India and all EU countries signed off on the international accord, negotiated under the stewardship of the OECD. The deal aims to ensure that the world’s 100 biggest companies pay taxes on their operations and sales around the globe, while introducing an international effective minimum corporate tax rate of 15 percent. The global tax rate would allow countries, collectively, to pocket an additional $150 billion in yearly tax revenue, while the levy would split a separate $125 billion in corporate tax receipts between participating governments worldwide. The global deal, which must still be approved by G20 leaders later this month and will likely take at least two years to implement, represents the first wholesale revamp of the corporate tax regime in decade. Considerable progress achieved in ridding the world of landmine remnants More than 110,000 landmines covering 135 km2 were destroyed globally last year, a new annual record. Four of the world’s most heavily mined countries - Lao PDR, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Iraq - accounted for 95% of the clearances, an exceptional achievement, especially against the backdrop of the pandemic. Over a million landmines have been cleared in the last decade. As well as saving countless lives and limbs, an untold number of communities have been freed from the fear of unexploded submunitions through cluster munition clearance, and a significant contribution has been made to development through the handing back of land for safe and productive use. China’s Chang’E-5 Lunar Mission Sheds Light on the Evolution of the Moon Lunar rock samples returned by Chinese probe suggest the moon experienced volcanic activity as recently as 2 billion years ago, despite lacking water and other conditions typical for magma formation. “This finding brings forward the time at which the Moon’s interior was still evolving from around 4 billion years ago to 2 billion years ago,” said LI Xianhua from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese researchers have studied the lunar samples brought back by the Chang’e-5 mission and dated the youngest rock on the Moon at around 2 billion years in age, extending the “life” of lunar volcanism 800-900 million years longer than previously known. Last year, China’s Chang’e-5 mission retrieved samples from the Moon weighing about 1,731 grams, which were the first lunar samples in the world in over 40 years. “The Chang’e-5 mission was a success and the lunar samples brought back shed new light on the evolution of the Moon,” said Li Xianhua. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Hello again - you’ve probably all loved not reading my weekly blah blah, hope you don’t mind me being back!!. We left NZ in June to see our daughter in Spain and finish off a building project there, blithely imagining that in our absence, everyone in NZ would have been vaccinated and the borders would have been open again. Thank goodness our travel agent, Owen Wood wisely booked us an MIQ slot (as if we would still need one by October!!) and off we flew. A week ago, we were strolling the streets of Barcelona, eating tapas and watching happy Spaniards enjoying the sunshine. Everything is busy and open - masks are always worn in any public indoor space. On Sunday I dragged my sleepy heathen husband out of bed early to get to the Sagrada Familia in time for international mass. Only 500 people were allowed in because of social distancing. 500 sounds a lot, but it’s an enormous building. We just made it in and the many hundreds in the queue behind us were turned away. We aren’t Catholic but on the odd occasions I go to a Catholic service in a beautiful church, I love all the glory and glamour - their stunning silk robes and oodles of gold and silver and swinging balls of incense and listening to Latin - it’s such a different world from the one we all live in. Heaven on earth, especially hearing a truly angelic choir singing in the world’s most famous unfinished cathedral. If there is a god, I was thanking him or her or them for such a fabulous experience. I’m so glad we had that time in Spain - when we first left, the TransTasman bubble was still happening, things were looking up. FINALLY the govt got enough vaccines ordered so they could ramp up the vaccine process. What could possibly go wrong? Um... all that time dithering gave the antivax brigade a perfect opportunity to get their nonsense out and about, so we are still being held to ransom by the deluded few. And our Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (could there be a less appropriate description for them?) is still making fully vaxed, negative tested New Zealanders (do you know that you don’t have to be vaccinated to come to NZ? Why on earth not?) do two weeks quarantine instead of just self isolating. I’m in it now, and all taxpayers should be weeping with rage at the waste of our hardearned cash. Our room looks straight into the area where new prisoners arrive. There are always at least as many officials as passengers, and always four 40 seater buses to move 10 people at a time the 100m to our hotel. I’m at an age and stage in life where I’m used to making my own decisions, and suddenly having no power over anything is horrific. We are herded like sheep and when we finally get our magic blue band so that we can go outside for supervised stomping round a tiny fenced off bit of tarmac for 50 minutes, we are stared at by passersby as if we are not even human. One man smiled at me, and I was so surprised and delighted I shouted a thank you at him. The only people in MIQ are those who can afford the $3100 pp charge, but most young Kiwis can’t. That charge is nothing like what it must really be costing the govt. One MIQ hotel owner from the South Island has made enough money to buy a private jet from it. It’s a dream deal - guaranteed 100% occupancy for years, cleaning staff only required for 2-4 days a month, no bothersome guests wanting taxis or information. Every guest has 3 meals a day (paid by you, the taxpayer) delivered in brown bags outside the door. I’m like a housebound Labrador leaping up with excitement whenever there’s a knock on the door!! A team of wellbeing “experts” ring to see how you’re enjoying your stay. We’ve got aviation security, ordinary security, the army and surveillance cameras keeping an eye on us. There are a million New Zealanders desperate to get home and the reason there are only 30,000 or so entering the lottery is because most can’t afford MIQ, don’t have enough holiday leave to make it worth doing, or just feel too guilty taking a place when there are so many tragic stories. I’m so worried about New Zealand - we are normally a brave, smart, innovative and considerate nation - we travel all over the world getting new ideas and bringing them back and tweaking them. A huge number of visitors to our country come because they’ve met New Zealanders and liked them a lot. It seems that in the last six months, a terrible wimpiness has grown, a fear of trying anything newer or better, a very nasty sense that people who travel should be punished. If you haven’t got friends and family and businesses overseas, lucky you, but in the meantime, let’s get our good old number 8 wire thinking back in action.
Thanks for taking the time to write in and participate in this ongoing process. Further safety analysis is underway on three alignment options for a dedicated cycle path connecting the Frankton Track to the Town Centre. The reason this analysis is underway is because Council, (which is made up of people who live in and love this town too) is listening to the community and absolutely understands the concerns raised about losing a large number of established trees in this area. Part of the process is determining, with the community, a plan to replace any trees lost with a larger number of new predominantly native trees which will improve the long-term tree canopy of Queenstown Gardens. There are many aspects involved in reducing our emissions and as a Council we are committed to our Beyond 2050 community vision of ‘zero carbon communities’. Trees are one aspect, no one is debating that. Another vital part is reducing our reliance on our cars and providing safe, convenient and genuine alternatives for people to get from A to B. The ultimate goal is to strike a balance between achieving both. All of the Councillors have been fully briefed on this work and we want to emphasise that no decision has been made. A paper is expected to go to Council for a final decision in December. At that meeting, it’s the Councillors role to consider a wide range of things as part of their decision making process, including community feedback and involvement, technical considerations, alignment with policies, plans and strategies and costs. We will keep you updated.

Central Lakes Trust announces scholarship recipients including 17 from WHS by Staff Reporter
Wakatipu High School have 17 very happy students who are recipients of the Central Lakes Trust (CLT) scholarship which were announced on Monday morning. Each scholarship is valued at $2,500 for further education in 2022. Overall 50 students across five schools in the Central Lakes Trust region were awarded scholarships. The announcement would normally be an official awards ceremony held each year on the Tuesday following Labour weekend. CLT chair Linda Robertson says, “Cancelling our scholarship ceremony was a difficult decision, it wasn’t made lightly, but regrettably due to current COVID alert level 2 restrictions, the logistics of bringing together 50 students and their parents, from multiple schools wasn’t going to work in terms of maintaining social distancing.” “While it’s disappointing not be able to get together to share in the celebration of these student’s achievement, each and every one of them should be applauded for their efforts, they have done exceptionally well.” The scholarships aim to assist students in further education beyond secondary school. New to last year’s awards was the inclusion of vocational scholarships. “The addition of CLT vocational scholarships is to specifically recognise the importance of vocational knowledge and skills and the importance vocational roles play in our society’s future,” says Chief Executive, Susan Finlay. Nine vocational scholarships were awarded, alongside seven Pioneer Energy science and technology scholarships, and 34 tertiary scholarships.

Robinson starts season by Paul Taylor
Queenstown alpine ski racer Alice Robinson finished in 11th place at the FIS Giant Slalom World Cup season opener in Sölden, Austria, over the weekend. After run one Robinson was ranked seventh, sitting just +0.90 of a second behind the leader Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland). But a difficult second run, with a couple of errors through the middle steep section of the course, saw her post the 23rd fastest time of the 30 racers and drop to 11th overall.
Robinson said it was great to be back out there competing and she was happy with some of her skiing. “Unfortunately, second run I pushed maybe a little too hard and had some pretty costly mistakes which pushed me back... but it’s the first race and it’s a long season so looking forward,” the 19-year-old said on Facebook. American ski racing powerhouse Mikaela Shiffrin took the win, 2mins 41secs ahead of Robinson. Gut-Behrami took the silver medal. 0.14 behind, and Petra Vlhova (Slovakia) rounded out the podium in third. Fellow Kiwi alpine ski racer Piera Hudson , of Wanaka, had her debut in the race and finished in 58th position. The traditional season opening on the Rettenbach Glacier in Sölden attracts the world’s best racers. Robinson made history in 2019 at this race when, at the age of 17, she won New Zealand’s first Alpine World Cup gold medal since 1997 and New Zealand’s first ever Giant Slalom Alpine World Cup gold medal.

I’d heard about Forgotten World Adventures and on a recent road trip decided to stop in and check it out. Back in the 70’s there was a daily railcar that used to connect Taumarunui with New Plymouth through the middle of the island and I’d always wondered what it was like. I know that shows my age. The King Country between these two towns is really sparsely populated so the areas
This is a part of middle-New Zealand you would never go to if it hadn’t been for Forgotten World Adventures – an entrepreneurial mix of rail, river and trail experiences in the heart of the King Country. The transportation are playful open air customised golf carts that wouldn’t look amiss on a golf course, but chugging across a rugged patch of King Country they are hilarious fun and sheer brilliance. The Forgotten World Adventure is probably the only reason you would stop in Taumarunui. We opted for the half day Rail Cart Tour which leaves at around 11am. But first, we had a night in the very bleak and decidedly unhip town of Taumarunui. “Where can we eat tonight?” we asked the motel receptionist. “We recommend either the Thai on the corner down the road, or the RSA.” Get the picture... Next morning dawned glorious sunshine and you can’t miss the check in area to begin our Rail Cart ride. There are people of all ages and nationalities aboard several small busloads that take us up the road to where the carts are kept. After getting the obligatory health and safety lesson, then shown how to use the carts that travel along rail tracks we are off. You just need to press an accelerator and a brake to stop and start and off you go – the rails guide your direction. This is a kiwi family run tour and the brainchild of Ian Balme and his wife Rachel. Ian came across the disused line between New Plymouth and Taumarunui and leased this forgotten part of the New Zealand rail network for 30 years and worked out how to adapt the golf carts to ride on rails – opening up a part of New Zealand that hasn’t been accessible to the public for years.
forgotten world label is very apt. In 2009, the railway was mothballed, a very politely political term for ‘closed’. In 2012, Forgotten World Adventures created one of the regions most popular tourist attractions with daily tours of visitors, all hellbent on trundling along the tracks in customised golf buggies.
Guides took us along the route stopping several times along the way to explain some of the history of the area and describe the making of the hand-made brick tunnels we rode through. We stopped in the middle of the longest tunnel (1.5 km long) to see and feel how pitch dark and cold the tunnels are – and regale us of the men who had to live out here in the bush for eight years while they worked all day inside building these tunnels in the early 1900s. The countryside, bush and farmland we ride through is beautiful and a bit of camaraderie and competition builds between our fellow travellers. Halfway through the 3½ hour trip we stop in the tiny King Country town of Matiere for afternoon tea – home-made baking and thermoses of tea and coffee while the carts are turned around. Good old kiwi hospitality. The old Town Hall is open for us to use the bathrooms. Then its time to head back and we all go like the clappers, pushing our carts as fast as they can go, up to all of 20km an hour, as the sun starts to retreat. There’s no mucking around when we get back – it’s onto the buses and back to our cars ready for the drive south. Certainly not stopping for a second night in town. We loved this trip – an afternoon of fresh air, a bit of adventure, beautiful scenery and some interesting history – as one of our fellow cart buddies said, “Good, old-fashioned, clean family friendly fun!” There is a half day, full day and two day adventure package available and highly recommended. COMMUNITY NOTES Wakatipu Community Foundation’s Impact 100 Impact100 was established in 2020 under the umbrella of the Wakatipu Community Foundation and is based on a model that has been operating successfully globally for twenty years. Traditionally made up of 100 women each donating $1,000 annually, the Wakatipu branch has secured support from 177 women this year. One of the elements that Impact100 women love is that traditionally you get the feeling your donation is only a tiny drop and can hardly make any difference, so being part of something where you are directly involved with other local women who are also able to donate $1000, suddenly there is a serious chunk of money that will make big impact. In addition, being in a group of generous, positive women who like helping make their community better, who doesn’t love being part of that? The Impact100 model is designed to empower women to see themselves as philanthropists and overcome the barriers women have historically faced in this arena. The model is designed for transformational grant-making within local communities, with a minimum of $100,000 distributed each year. For the Impact100 members to be able to invite existing local groups to explain how they could use $100,000 to best effect is inspiring and in doing so, everyone learns a lot about applying for grants (quite an art!) and everyone involved learns a lot about the needs in the community. Impact100 has been going in America for a long time, and Kristen Holtzman who knows a lot about philanthropy recognised that in a small place like Queenstown and the Southern Lakes, its impact could be huge.
Here is how it works Just prior to the first lockdown last year the programme got underway and the inaugural winner was Central Otago Living Options who used their grant to establish a centre in Arrowtown to offer people with disabilities and their families professional support, vocational education and friendship. The 2021 finalists and projects have just been announced and the winners will be announced at a dinner on 17 November when the 177 members of Impact100 will have an opportunity to vote for their preferred charity. “We were pleased with the diverse range of impressive finalists in our second year,” said Kristen Holtzman, Impact100 Wakatipu founding chair. “It is always a wonderful education to go through the grant review process to understand the needs in our community. Each of the projects chosen could easily qualify for the $100,000 grant.” The Finalists and how they plan to utilise the funds. Central Lakes Family Services – To launch a two-year pilot perinatal program to support women and their families from pregnancy through the child’s first year. Kiwi Kit Community Trust and Volunteer South Partnership – A partnership to provide support and increase the well-being and connectedness of migrants in our community. Pivotal Point Charitable Trust – A pilot programme to screen children for neurodiversity and learning disorders and to provide professional development for teachers dealing with those children in the school system. Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust – To establish Celium platform technologybased trapping of feral cats in the Dart/Rees delta. This would build on a two trials carried out last year which showed that this technology is effective and more cost-efficient than previously used trapping methods. Southern Wellbeing Trust – To establish and fund a mental health program called GoodYarn in the Wakatipu Basin. GoodYarn will provide peer-led led mental health and wellbeing workshops two times a month for a year, with twenty participants in each one. Do have a look online at Impact100 - it’s extremely simple and helpful. Apart from that, it’s also a lot of fun and every woman gets a vote in deciding which group it should go to.

Community News Lakefront Alcohol Restrictions on the cards for Christmas Before the end of the year, Council will decide whether to declare a temporary alcohol restriction area in Queenstown and Wānaka on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Temporary restrictions in 2020 were in response to a police request to address high numbers of people gathering which had in previous years resulted in abusive language and large amounts of rubbish left behind. Police have made a similar request this year and it’s understood they would like restrictions to be made permanent.

Arts+Culture New arts and cultural facility to hold open days by Bethany Rogers
Queenstown’s new arts and cultural hub, Te Atamira, will hold two public open days this fortnight.
“It’s a great way of fundraising, but also means every member of the community can literally leave their mark in the space.
It’s an exciting moment for the facility. The local arts and cultural community have struggled for years with a lack of flexible workshop, practice and performance spaces. This has become more keenly felt as the arts community has grown along with the region’s population.
“We’re also working on an art exhibition and on the 6th November, Anna Stewart will run a dance class […] so there really is a buzz of activity on these days and it’s a chance for the community to see the spaces and to realise that it is a really big space we have and imagine what it can become.
Now, thanks to funding and support from the community and organisations like the Central Lates Trust and Three Lakes Cultural Trust, that facility is one step closer to reality.
“[…] we also want to use the open days to celebrate all the generous supporters who have come on board. It’s great to recognise those people who have been on board from the beginning.”
Te Atamira will be spread across two locations “within 30 steps of each other” at Remarkables Park, Frankton. It will be home to more than 40 arts and cultural groups and organisations.
During the open days, there’ll be a large digital screen displaying concepts for the space.
There’s still work to be done on the hub and fundraising is ongoing for the fitout, which begins in November. With a series of fundraising events run by artists and arts groups in the schedule, Development Director Olivia Egerton says the team decided it was a good time to show off the space. “We decided to do the open days because there’s been so much curiosity around what’s going to happen in the space. So we thought this would be a great opportunity for people to come and see the big, bare shell before we really kick things off in November.” On the open day, visitors will be able to buy a tile made by the Wakatipu Potters Group. Money raised by the sale of the tiles will go towards funds for the space and the tiles will become part of a mural.
The plans include dance studios, a theatre space, a recording studio, a pottery workshop, an art gallery and multiple artists’ and musicians’ studios. Groups like the Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet, Remarkables Dance Crew and Turn Up The Music are keen to use the space for dance and music lessons, too. “It’s been talked about for ages, having a central arts and culture hub and there have been different plans over the years. It’s something that’s for the community and a space that’s fit for purpose with sprung floors and the opportunity to expand the access to many people […] just like the Event Centre is a space for sports and rec, this will be a chance to have a specific place for arts and culture for the community.”

Starkwhite Queenstown’s New Home at 1–7 Earl Street is Ready to Open After many delays and a lockdown in the middle of building work, Starkwhite Queenstown is finally ready to open their new contemporary art gallery. Situated at the top of Earl Street, Starkwhite has undertaken complete refit and now boasts almost 100 square metres of roomy, light-filled space to exhibit the work of leading artists from New Zealand and further afield right here in Queenstown. Large glass windows look out on to Earl Street and bathe the space in natural light, while high ceilings and a newly revealed industrial ceiling give the gallery an international, contemporary aesthetic. Queenstown gallery director Kelly Carmichael comments “Since we opened in FebruaryStarkwhite has brought its A–game to Queenstown exhibiting the work of artists with international reputations and we’re excited to be launching a new gallery. We are committed to Queenstown and the burgeoning contemporary art scene here, as well as being creative collaborators to the wider arts scene.”
Starkwhite Queenstown’s first exhibition presents a selection of acclaimed New Zealand artists including Billy Apple, Fiona Pardington, and Gordon Walters and new work by Australian artist Jonny Niesche. Niesche is hot property with a string of sell out shows. Best known for his iridescent paintings that shimmer with pigment, being with Niesche’s work can be a seductive sensory overload as well as a ticket to an elegant futuristic realm. Materially fetishistic, his practice is celebrated for bold chromatic expanses and saturated tones that dissolve from one hue to the next in an unfolding play of light and colour. The effect is intensified by the indistinct edges between bands of colour that surround dark middle ground. Niesche’s paintings and sculptures hum and vibrate with vivid colour set against metal and mirror, offering shifting, alluring experiences of form, space, and movement. As one tone blurs and dissolves into the next, a silky insubstantiality of pure colour and sensation emerges. His glowing neon tones and soft pastels that flow from a mysterious dark centre are finished with reflective rims, mirroring the viewer back to his or her self in a surprising encounter with the art work. Materially fetishistic, his work offers a glamorous urban beauty while wrapping the viewer in total sensory stimulation.
2002, Starkwhite opened a second space in Queenstown earlier this year, an intentional action to invest in and support the development of audiences and artists nationally. Their commitment to supporting local extends to the refit of their space, employing local tradies and working with senior interior designer Jonathan Goss from Warren and Mahoney’s Queenstown branch on the design. Walking their talk, Starkwhite has donated a sold out Gordon Walters print to support this week’s Te Atamira fundraiser for their new arts and culture space, and also sponsored the Wakatipu Music Festival back in June. Although they won’t be able to hold a function and welcome art lovers with a proper opening until alert levels go down, from Wednesday 27 October the doors will be open and Queenstown’s contemporary art scene takes a step forward.
From late-November Starkwhite will present a much awaited new body of work by one of Ngāi Tahu’s most celebrated artists, Fiona Pardington. Pardington’s new still life series titled Tarota was developed after a research trip to the Queenstown-Lakes region in February / March this year. Starkwhite is one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary art galleries and represents some of this country’s most acclaimed artists, many of whom are sought after by international museum collections. Typically present at major art fairs including Art Basel (Switzerland and Hong Kong), Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Sydney Contemporary, and others in the Asia-Pacific region, after the pandemic hit and international art fairs were off the cards Starkwhite director Dominic Feuchs decided to increase the gallery’s focus domestically. Prior to that, McNab held senior wholesale and sales roles. RealNZ CEO Stephen England-Hall says the long search for the right fit for the role has been worth it.

Fundraiser for native birds by Paul Taylor
A Queenstown charity event has raised more than $30,000 to help save the critically endangered tūturuatu/tchūriwat’/shore plover. Gibbston’s Kinross Winery and Hawkshead Wine last week raised the money for the New Zealand Nature Fund (NZNF), a conservation philanthropy organisation set up to help support regeneration and restoration of native biodiversity. Hosting a spring banquet at Kinross, guests bid at auction for items donated by local businesses in support of the birds.

The survival of the tūturuatu – which inhabits beaches and wave forms on predator-free islands – depends on keeping their sanctuaries pestfree, captive breeding and translocations to predatorfree locations.
NZNF founding trustee Denis Marshall says: “If these birds are lost there will be nothing like them left on the planet. “Current work is undertaken by the Department of Conservation and captive breeding sanctuaries, but the programme requires extensive support to ensure the re-introduction phase is successful. Recently retired Director-General of Conservation, Lou Sanson, spoke at the event.
Marshall, a former Minister for Conservation, lives in Gibbston with his partner Ulrike Kurenbach. Their Hawkshead wine also featured as an auction prize, with magnums illustrated with bespoke Hannah Shand artworks on each.
He explained that species restoration was at a critical point with the shore plover, with additional annual funding required to ensure ongoing success of the breeding and re-wilding of the birds.
Other donated items for the charity auction included a gourmet dining experience at Minaret Station, a Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony Experience, artwork from Hannah Shand and a Boutique Vineyard Hotel stay at Kinross.
“With only 263 mature individuals left, the shore plover has a similar population to the kākāpō and is more at risk than the takahĕ, kiwi, or kōkako,” Sanson said.
“This fundraiser was immensely successful, but there is so much more to do to support our critically endangered species, and we would love to see more donations small or large to help continue the work at hand.”
