It’s The End Of The World As We Know It…. Even when you know the bad news is coming - it still hits like a shot to the guts. By April next year and after twenty-plus years - the Queenstown Arts Centre will be homeless. The land and building is owned by QLDC and like renters everywhere, you’re never in complete control over your own future. The Council’s long planned Project Manawa will eventually be a community arts and culture hub on the spot where the Art Centre currently sits. The challenge for us is: what happens in the gap between our current home and the beautiful home that (eventually) awaits us? We had hoped that The Arts Centre would face the wrecking ball the day before construction began on our forever home - but the reality of civic development isn’t quite so straightforward. Like a game of municipal musical chairs, building sites in central Queenstown are going to hop around for the next few years with familiar faces like The Arts Centre and The Memorial Centre being taken to the ground so that roading, parking and development can take place - all in the name of the eventual shiny endgame of a spectacular arts precinct. Or at least we hope. So where does that leave us? Instinct says to ﬁght, to chain ourselves to the bulldozer and rally the troops. Or turn tail and run - fold up our easels, give the brushes one ﬁnal rinse and call time. But there is a third option - one that we are most looking forward to: Re-birth.

Whitewater New Zealand in conjunction with Central Otago Whitewater secured access to the Motatapu River for one day recently. Approximately 55 Kayakers including local Hamish Mckay in the red kayak came to the river for the day.

We’ve spent two decades building a community that’s bigger than a space, more important than a building and more resilient than any of these challenges. Our art classes will migrate to the beautiful new Te Atamira space in Frankton. This space will also be the new home for our ever expanding artist workshop series, selected gallery shows and a creative space for some of our studio artists with their purpose built studio spaces. And we’ll expand into central Queenstown with pop-up spaces for gallery shows with local and emerging art for sale (local landlords: consider this the shoulder tap). But for this third, relentlessly positive option to work - we’ll need your help. We’ll need support from our community to roll with these waves, from our supporters to think laterally about spaces for pop-up shows and space for the arts in downtown QT and help from everyone to remind the council that our forever home isn’t a ‘nice to have’, it’s a ‘need to have’ for the local arts community. So as REM said around the time the Arts Centre opened our doors, “It’s the end of the world as we know it… and we feel ﬁne.” Well maybe not ﬁne, but we’re not going away that’s for sure. Arts centre facing the bulldozers by Paul Taylor

The demolition of the vibrant Queenstown Arts Centre will be a significant blow to the town’s arts scene, says Queenstown Arts Society president Diane Hart.

“These groups have been offered space at the new Te Atamira facility and support to adapt to their new location, if they choose to take it up, and these discussions have been largely positive for everyone involved.”

Housed in the former high school classroom buildings on Stanley Street, the centre offers studios for a dozen artists, the Cloakroom gallery space hosting nine exhibitions a year, and art classes.

Groups relocating from the Stanley St site are being given priority for bookings and discussion around programming. There is a waiting list of groups who have expressed interest and that process will begin in November, he says.

It is run as a non-profit charity, by volunteers from the Queenstown Arts Society.

But that’s just the problem, says Hart. Rather than their own venue and community, the organisation will compete for space in a hub run by a separate entity, the Te Atamira Whakatipu Community Trust.

But landlord Queenstown Lakes District Council plans to use the whole block for Project Manawa; new hub of civic, retail and cultural buildings, including a $50 million performing arts venue. QLDC will demolish the building when the lease ends in April next year, even though work won’t start on the new complex before 2025 and likely won’t be finished this decade.

“We’re supportive of the new place because, of course, there’s a desperate need in Queenstown for that,” she says. “But it’s not going to be a replacement for what we are and what we have.”

In the meantime, it’ll be used as a temporary carpark.

Queenstown Arts Centre will be homeless and effectively cease to exist in its current form, unable to break even without revenue from studio rents and sales.

Hart says she’s still hoping someone can step in to save the facility, in the same way intervention from billionaire Rod Drury saved the Gorge Road Jump Park.

Hart also highlights the need for a community arts space in the CBD, especially with the recent launch of First Thursdays, where seven galleries in the CBD open late into the evenings.

“There are a lot of philanthropists out there, and most of them are very keen on the arts, so once the awareness is out there, hopefully we’ll get some support.

She says the arts centre is “a real community, a living, breathing entity in its own right, with its own heart, soul and infrastructure, very nurturing for artists.

“Even a temporary reprieve would be welcome. It would be a tragedy if the land is used as a carpark or empty for eight years.”

“We’re not trying to fight anybody or argue with anybody, but we seem to have slipped through the cracks and just want to maintain our existence for the good of the community.”

Council community services boss Dr Thunes Cloete says it’s a different situation to Gorge Road, and the plans for the Stanley Street site have been signalled since 2017. He points to the new $4.2m Te Atamira arts and culture hub being built in Remarkables Park, Frankton. Cloete says council has been in discussions with Queenstown Arts Centre since March 2021 about the new venue, along with the Queenstown Performing Arts Trust and Wakatipu Potters, who are also currently in buildings on the Stanley St / Ballarat St block.

But Cloete says the arts and culture venues in the town centre, including the Memorial Centre, are increasingly becoming “unable to adequately accommodate local groups, let alone national and international arts or performances”. “The goal of Project Manawa, and Te Atamira is very much to support, nurture and grow the arts scene” he says.

Queenstown Lakes boasted one of the top turn-outs in the country for second doses on Super Saturday. Some 1,504 people responded to the call to get fully vaccinated, that’s 4.19% of the 35,862 eligible over 12s population.

That was the fifth highest percentage of second doses given in New Zealand, per population. The Ministry of Health has not released the full breakdown of figures yet by district, only the top performers. Queenstown Lakes didn’t make the top five for first doses given, or overall, but that was always unlikely given the high uptake already, with around 93% of the population having had at least one jab. Across the whole Southern District Health Board area, which stretches from Queenstown Lakes down to Dunedin and Invercargill, 3.2% of the eligible population turned out on Saturday, with 2,696 having their first dose and 6,629 their second. For the SDHB area, 69% are fully vaccinated, 17% have had just one dose, and 14% remain unvaccinated. Nationally, 130,002 people were vaccinated on Super Saturday, including 39,025 first doses. Some 65.3% of the 4.21 million eligible population are fully vaccinated, 19.4% have had only one dose, and 15.3% are unvaccinated. There were 92 new cases community cases over the weekend, including 87 in Auckland and five in the Waikato.

Government extends temporary work visas

Working Holiday visas and Supplementary Seasonal Employment (SSE) work visas due to expire in summer and autumn are being extended for another six months. Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi says: “This offers employers and visa holders the certainty they’ve been asking for going into this summer’s harvest season and which we said we’d provide, if necessary, back in June when we announced the last six month extension.” More than 8,500 people on Working Holiday visas and SSE work visas due to expire between 21 December 2021 and 30 June 2022 will benefit from the six month extension. Eligible visas will automatically be extended by INZ for an additional six months from the date they expire, visa holders won’t need to apply for a new visa. They will also continue to have open work rights, allowing them to work in any sector to help meet labour market demands, including construction and tourism in Queenstown, as businesses prepare for domestic tourism this summer and the reopening of borders in 2022. The extensions follow news last month of a one-off pathway to residence for an estimated 165,000 migrants and their families. Faafoi says the Government remains committed to its long-term vision for NZ’s immigration system, transitioning away from “low-paid and low-skilled migrant workers”.

Opposition to the proposed Tarras airport is ramping up in the wake of an aeronautical assessment which indicated the airport could serve short-haul international flights. Lobby group Stop Central Otago Airport (SCOA) was formed in July and it already has 1,000 members, and a second group, Sustainable Tarras, has launched a petition to parliament to prevent the development of an airport. SCOA spokesperson Zella Downing said the group had strong support but it was taking its time working through Christchurch Airport’s preliminary assessment and gauging local sentiment. “We first want to understand the level of opposition, and then we’ll see who steps forward,” Zella said. “We’re not in a rush, but we will build opposition to this.” Meanwhile, Sustainable Tarras’ petition has drawn a firm line in the sand, asking that the airport not go ahead. The petition says Sustainable Tarras believes taxpayers are funding the development of an “unnecessary new international airport” in Tarras. The group questioned the benefits of a return to pre-Covid-19 tourism levels, saying it would negatively impact the community and landscape. Zella said SCOA was not affiliated with Sustainable Tarras but the groups kept in touch and held similar goals. She said SCOA encouraged residents to read the petition and sign it if they agree. The group has also released the results of a survey of Tarras residents which shows 83 per cent of respondents were ‘strongly against’ the proposed airport. In July last year Christchurch Airport revealed it had spent $45M to develop a wide body jet capable airport on 750ha of land in Tarras (bordered by State Highways 8, 8A, and Maori Point Road). The aeronautical assessment, released in September, said the airport site could support an airfield with a single runway of at least 2.2 kilometres and possibly up to three kilometres. It is part of Christchurch’s Airport’s ‘planning and validation’ phase for Tarras, which is expected to run until 2023.

Iconic Manly Ferries on the way out Sydney: For kiwi visitors to Sydney the sight of the Manly Ferry on the harbour is quintessential Sydney. After plying Sydney Harbour between Circular Quay and Manly for almost four decades, the first of Sydney’s large Manly ferries, the Queenscliff has been retired and shortly the fleet will halve as the second of the Freshwater fleet, the Narrabean disappears. The Queenscliff’s last passenger service was from Manly to Circular Quay last Wednesday, which was followed by a special trip for those who have worked on the large Freshwater-class ferry over the decades. The NSW government is yet to announce the last sailing for the final ferry the Narrabeen, but it is expected to be retired by early next year. After enormous public backlash two of the ferries will be retained – the Collaroy and the Freshwater – which will operate on weekends and public holidays once the three new smaller ferries enter regular service.

After 2 Years, a Tire Is Removed from an Elk’s Neck in Colorado For more than two years, residents of Pine, a small town about 30 miles southwest of Denver, have been sending in reports to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife authorities whenever they saw an elk that had somehow shoved its head through a tire. The tire slid down the elk’s neck and became stuck there, locked into place as its antlers developed and branched out. Wildlife authorities wanted to remove the tire, and solicited the public’s help in locating the elk. Wildlife officials had been seeking the elk since it was first spotted in 2019. Last weekend, they finally were able to tranquilise the animal and slid the tire off after removing its antlers. Colorado Parks and Wildlife, said on Monday that local farmer, Mr. Swanson tranquilized the elk, which is 4 and a half years old and weighs 270kg’s. Two wildlife officers then sheared off the elk’s antlers so the tire could be pulled over its head. The tire was packed with debris and dirt and was finally wrestled over its head, and the elk started to come to after it was given a reversal dose. It stood, unsteadily at first, and wandered off into the dark. NYT

‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ the musical turns 50 The rock opera, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, opened on Broadway on Oct. 12, 1971, to protests, an irate composer — and sold-out shows. The musical, turned the story of one of history’s most notorious executions into a splashy spectacle. In doing so, it married rock and musical theater, ushering in Broadway’s British invasion of the 1970s and 1980s and paving the way for shows like “Les Misérables” and “The Phantom of the Opera.” The show, narrates the last seven days of Jesus’s life through the eyes of one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, The critics weren’t initially thrilled — some called it brash, and Webber himself called it vulgar — but thanks to a $1,000,000 advance sale and the attention of religious protesters, the show was a phenomenon. Initially, Rice and Webber’s idea for a rock opera passion play didn’t take off — one investor called it the “worst idea in history,” and the 1970 concept album was banned by BBC radio for being sacrilegious. The album met a different fate in the U.S., where it became the bestselling record of 1971. Fifty years later, the show’s impact is difficult to exaggerate. Queenstown Lakes is the place to be for New Zealand’s best and aspiring skiers and snowboarders. The snow district won all the major gongs at the Snow Sports NZ Annual Awards, held digitally on Friday. The honours were divided fairly evenly between both sides of the Crown Range. For Queenstown, Alice Robinson was judged Alpine Ski Racer of the Year, Blake Marshall won Freeride Athlete of the Year, and Cool Wakushima had the Breakthrough Season, in Snowboard Slopestyle & Big Air.

“I am incredibly proud of all our athletes for their achievements in what has been a challenging year. Congratulations to all the award winners and I wish all the best to Kiwi snow sports athletes, coaches and instructors heading to the Northern Hemisphere to compete and work this coming winter.” This year’s Awards encompassed a 12-month timeframe including the 2020/21 Northern Hemisphere season and the 2021 Southern Hemisphere season. There was no award an Adaptive Snow Sports Athlete of the year for 2021, as they didn’t compete during the awards period.

Heaven Zhang won the Instructor of the Year title, while Geoff Hunt was the Men’s Masters Ski Racing Champion.

But the big one went over the hill. Overall Athlete of the Year was jointly awarded to Wanaka’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous. Also for Wanaka, freeski coach Brad Prosser, who won Coach of the Year, Campbell Wright was judged Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and Bonny Teat was Women’s Masters Ski Racing Champion. It’s the first time in more than a decade that Overall Athlete of the Year was shared, but judges decided Sadowski-Synnott and Porteous couldn’t be separated. They both had phenomenal seasons, achieving New Zealand firsts, world firsts and both landing on the podium at every competition they dropped into. Sadowski-Synnott became the first person to successfully defend a Snowboard Slopestyle World Championships title when she did just that in March 2021. She won the Big Air World Cup in Kreischberg, claimed a silver medal (Snowboard Slopestyle) and a bronze medal (Snowboard Big Air) at the prestigious Aspen X Games and won the Jackson Hole stop of the Natural Selection Tour. Porteous won New Zealand’s first ever X Games Freeski SuperPipe gold medal with a never landed before in competition trick combination of back to back 1620s. Nico went on to win the Freeski Halfpipe World Championships title, once again, the first Kiwi to win this title. Kia ora koutou. My name is Matt Mukai. I started with Queenstown Lakes Libraries in April. I’m originally from the Maniototo, so moving to the district has felt like a return home. Previously I worked a decade in a regional public library on Vancouver Island, on the west coast of Canada. I was and continue to be attracted to libraries by their core values – open access for all, support for literacy and lifelong learning – and community focus. I moved through circulation roles while completing a Master of Library and Information Science degree, and then took on public services and collections positions.

As a reader and a librarian, I try to read across genres and subject areas to support my reader’s advisory practice. In fiction, I tend to read literacy fiction, some science fiction, the occasional crime or fantasy novel. In nonfiction, I read histories, with a particular taste for natural histories, travel narratives, the occasional biography, and books on culture and popular science.

My last role in Canada was managing my library’s electronic resources collection, spanning the acquisition of eBooks and audiobooks, evaluating new resources and negotiating licensing contracts with vendors, troubleshooting database issues, and communicating changes in this ever-evolving sector to patrons and staff. The ﬁrst COVID-19 lockdown drove library patrons to our digital collections. With libraries closed and print collections inaccessible, supporting the uptake of digital was an incredibly busy but meaningful experience in my career. Recent highlights are:

Two Queenstown properties, among the most expensive sales in New Zealand this year, were sold without the buyers even seeing them in person.

Three of the top five most expensive sales in NZ this year have been in Queenstown, and two prime CBD properties have just been snapped up for more than $3m each.

A $16.1 million Closeburn home and a $14.5m Jacks Point property were sold by New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty via online appraisals and bidding.

The rising prices are good news for some home owners, but not for those looking to upsize or get on the ladder.

NZSIR managing director Mark Harris says of the company’s made $105m of sales this year where the buyer didn’t physically view the property.

“The number of first home buyers has decreased as finance is taking longer to secure, along with the rise of house prices making homes unaffordable for some,” says REINZ Regional Director Gail Hudson.

That’s about 10% of the $1.1bn total sales nationally. Some $35m of the online sales were during the latest lockdown.

And Hudson expects the market to spike again, once Aucklanders are able to travel to view property.

“Covid has changed people’s mindsets,” Harris says. “There is clear interest in finding lifestyle living near a mountain, a beach or a lake, with fresh air and room to move. House prices have risen more than 30% since lockdown last year and a shortage of stock, along with low interest rates and a strengthening economy, means people wanting homes have confidence their investments will grow.” Queenstown Lakes property remains in the red zone.

Median house prices have increased a whopping 23.7% year-on-year, reaching $1.3m in September, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of NZ stats. The Queenstown-Wakatipu Ward reached a record median of $1.28m, as did Wanaka at $1.3m, up almost 40%. Properties are selling faster, the median days to sell is 37 days, down from 59 days in September 2020.

Akaroa Akaroa is perhaps best known as the most french town in the country on account of the land being purchased by the French from the local Maori tribe before the British had laid claimed to New Zealand, including the Banks Peninsula. Akaroa is a little like Arrowtown in that it has held onto its heritage with fine examples of historic buildings and a passion for fine food and restaurants. Unlike Arrowtown it has a magnificent harbour.

There are plenty of charming little places to stay very close to the waterfront where you will also find the restaurants, cafés, and the activities center, of course.

Upon arriving in Akaroa, you are blown away by the beauty of the place. The waterfront has a few welcoming walks, including walking up to the lighthouse which only takes 5min. During specific times you can get up to the lighthouse. In case you prefer a different experience to see Akaroa from the top, you can venture to Stanley Park, take a rug to sit on the grass, relax and enjoy!

The boat tours take you out to see dolphins, and they promote that there is over 90% chance of seeing them, during the summer months when they come closer to the harbour. Some tours would even take you to swim with dolphins. While on the boat you will be able to see the spectacular volcanic formations and with luck some penguins and fur seals too. If you rather stay with your feet on the ground, what about an alpaca’s farm? Alpacas are full of attitude, seriously cute and very photogenic. Getting there: Just over 500km from Queenstown you will find Akaroa, a town on the Banks Peninsula.

Akaroa is around 1 hour drive from Christchurch and around 6 ½ hours from Queenstown. On the way from Queenstown to Akaroa you will pass amazing scenery, so there are many places you can stop, break the trip to appreciate the views. Few of the places we like to stop are Lake Pukaki to see Mt Cook from a distance, Lake Tekapo, Lindis Pass Summit and Fairlie, for their famous pies.

Our dominant transport mode is the personal car, and dependency on this mode creates congestion, frustration and unnecessary carbon emissions. In fact, 48% of New Zealand’s energy-related emissions come from transport. So how does Queenstown — quickly growing into an alpine city with a lot more than tourism on offer —position itself to develop an efficient and sustainable transport network? We are known for being active and energetic here in Queenstown so a shift toward active travel modes makes sense. This might include carpooling, riding a bike, walking, catching a bus or ferry, scootering, skating or any combination of modes. It’s not about being anti-car. Rather it is about inspiring a change in thinking about how we move around this beautiful place – and making certain this change can occur regardless of the conditions ahead.

Community News Proposed new bus infrastructure - Lake Hayes Estate The current Orbus route Number 5 operates through Lake Hayes Estate, however there is limited bus stops and the service largely relies on users flagging down the drivers at informal stops, known as ‘hail and ride’. To improve this, QLDC is proposing: A new pair of bus stops on Erskine Street, providing for the inbound and outbound service. The proposed location is next to the Walnut Grove reserve, linking to existing pedestrian/cycle connections. • Widened footpaths near the bus stops to ensure safe access • Signage and line marking to ensure the bus can enter and exit the stops more safely • Bike racks, ski racks and seating. Provision for lighting in the future. • Accessibility features such as tactile pavers and seating, and plenty of space for wheelchairs or prams. • Provisional space for rubbish and/or recycling bins.

The Lightfoot Initiative works toward a shared goal of less reliance on car travel, less congestion on our roads, and ultimately, less carbon in our atmosphere. Through local projects such as the Active Travel Mini-Expo, Test the Network and the upcoming Red Oaks Express trial we know where active transport is at — and where it could be.

We are excited to co-host the October Green Drinks: Shifting Gears Toward Active Transport with Sustainable Queenstown on Thursday 21st at Crowne Plaza, Queenstown. Three knowledgeable speakers will present: Sierra Alef-Defoe is a health promoter at Public Health South and has a particular interest in healthy built environments, from smokefree/vapefree public spaces to active and public transport infrastructure. Sierra will give insight into why what’s good for public health is also good for the environment.

That the existing stop at Nerin Square is upgraded with new seating, ski and bike racks and tactile pavers. This stop is proposed to change to pick up and drop off only. Terminus waiting for buses will be relocated. To upgrade the existing stop at Onslow Road to include similar facilities.

Dan Mikkelson is the owner of Bicycle Junction, a transport-focused community bike shop and cafe in Wellington. They have led the way in transport cycling and are helping to create a “Cargo Bike Capital”. Dan will be talking about the early days of Cargo Bikes and what the key factors are in creating change towards alternative transport.

Two further bus stops being proposed on Red Cottage Drive are already consented as part of the Bridesdale development.

Jennifer Smart is a co-founder of the Lightfoot Initiative, a communityled action-station that wants to see less car dependency, less congestion on our roads and ultimately, less carbon in our atmosphere. Jen has seen the effect of car-centric transport planning on communities and will be sharing the Lightfoot Initiative’s exciting projects to encourage mode shift in Queenstown towards active transport.

Skippers Road is closed from Monday 18th Repairs are required to a section of the Skippers Road, 6km in from the Coronet Peak Road. Work started on Monday 18 October and the road will be closed completely during the work. The work is expected to take 2-3 weeks. Arts+Culture Arrowtown art gallery takes flight by Bethany Rogers

Local art gallery Birdwoods South is going from strength to strength and is poised to open a new Auckland branch. Gallery owner Jack Stobart opened Birdwoods in Arrowtown just over a year ago. His parents, Bruce and Louise, own the renowned Birdwoods gallery in Hawke’s Bay. Originally from Zimbabwe, Jack moved to New Zealand in his teenage years and attended Queenstown Resort College after high school. His original intention was to pursue a career in the tourism industry; Jack spent six years working on luxury yachts around the world.

The Birdwoods gallery will continue to evolve and expand. Arrowtown local Charlotte Bertrand was running a nearby café, but fell in love with the gallery and has become the gallery manager. This has given Jack the space to start a new project: launching a Birdwoods gallery in Auckland.

A 2019 trip to Africa with his parents changed everything. Jack was fascinated by the artists in his homeland and decided to follow in his parents’ footsteps, sharing the artwork in New Zealand. Just weeks after opening the gallery on Buckingham Street, New Zealand went into lockdown.

Jack says a location in Auckland was always on the cards, but the Arrowtown gallery “just sort of happened” first. Despite Auckland being in lockdown, the stars have aligned for the gallery and Jack says he’s willing to take a leap of faith.

Despite a few bumps in the road, Jack says the gallery’s first year went well.

“Four or five months ago, a space came up in Parnell. So we decided to go for it. It’s a leap of faith, a bit of a gamble, but many of our customers are from Auckland and we’re hoping that we get the response there that we’ve had here. At the end of the day, another gallery means we can purchase more from our artists.”

“We have been busy. We get a lot of customers coming back for more. We are lucky that our stuff is so unique, and people enjoy our story. We work with many different arts communities around the world now, and we’ve got a point of difference. “Initially, we started with outdoor sculpture, but we’ve grown and adapted. We’ve recently got a whole bunch of basketry from Ghana. We’ve got a big range of jewellery. We’ve got a bunch of rugs and cushions from a trader in Afghanistan that we work with. “The majority of the sculpture pieces are going indoors and we’ve started to do a lot of commission work. People come to us and say: ‘we want something like that, but we want it bigger’. There have obviously been delays with shipping, but I’m very fortunate to have family in Africa that can work directly with the artists.”

Despite the obvious difficulties of creating and launching a gallery during a lockdown, Jack’s hopeful the gallery will be a success when the Auckland Birdwoods is allowed to open its doors to the public. “I think what we do is quite special and what we’ve found out in Arrowtown is that other people feel the same way. So maybe the Auckland gallery will work, maybe it won’t but, I think it’s time to take that test and make that shot.”

Unemployment in Zimbabwe is 95%, and three-quarters of the population live in poverty. The country has corruption issues, and there are severe cash, fuel, medicine and power shortages. The sale of one sculpture through Birdwoods means the artist can feed their family for months. The connection has enabled the gallery and the artists to create an international community and improve life in their hometown. “They’ve been busy. They have recently started building a community hall in Chitungwiza in Zimbabwe and there’s an art centre there that we’ve bought a truck for. “That was a big part of what we wanted to do when we started. My parents have worked with some of these guys for 20 years. We work together. They’ve done a lot for us by providing this amazing artwork and we provide an outlet for them to sell their work. We’ve developed a really nice relationship.”

Art News Arts in Schools Pilot Programme Three Lakes Cultural Trust has launched its first Arts in Schools programme. Starting at the end of the month, over 320 primary school students from Shotover Primary School in Queenstown and Holy Family Catholic School in Wānaka will take part in the program. The pilot program has been created to provide essential arts opportunities to primary school students. Professional artists across four mediums will spend 10 hours over 5 consecutive days with the students, enhancing their skills in mediums they would otherwise not be exposed to. This year the project is referred to as pilot programme and key learnings will be used to sculpt the program into the future. Each year, the project will evolve to include additional schools, and in the future, hopes to include all schools in the district.

Kepler mountain named after space scientist by Paul Taylor

A previously unnamed mountain in Fiordland National Park has been officially named Mount Axford, in honor of an eminent New Zealand space scientist. The 1,720 metre peak, the highest point in the Kepler Mountains, now bears the name of astrophysicist and cosmologist Sir Ian Axford, who died in 2010. “Themed place names that commemorate prominent New Zealand space scientists are a unique feature of the Kepler Mountains,” says Anselm Haanen, chair of the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa.

Asteroid ‘5097 Axford’ is also named in his honour. “It is a fitting tribute to celebrate him with a place name that makes his story part of our future history,” adds Haanen. The Kepler Mountains, which overlook Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri, were named by an early surveyor, James McKerrow, to recognise the famous 17th century German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler.

“After confirming with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu that the mountain does not have an original Māori name, the Board supported naming it to recognise Sir Ian’s distinguished international career as a researcher and leader of science organisations.”

Mount Pickering and Mount Tinsley nearby were officially named in 2010 after William Hayward Pickering, a distinguished New Zealand scientist who pioneered space exploration, and Beatrice Muriel Hill Tinsley, a prominent New Zealand astronomer and cosmologist whose research made fundamental contributions to understanding the evolution of galaxies. Sir Ian was a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and Vice Chancellor at Victoria University of Wellington between 1982-1985. He was named New Zealander of the Year in 1995 and was knighted in 1996.

Haanen says many submissions to the Board were in favour of the new place name, which marks the highest point in the Kepler Mountains. However, because objections were also received that were not supported by the Board, Minister for Land Information Hon Damien O’Connor was required to make the final decision.

Queenstown Airport prepares for rolling out rapid testing Queenstown Airport has worked alongside some of New Zealand’s largest companies to get approval for the use of rapid antigen testing in workplaces.

Free parking for locals For the next two weeks, residents have the chance to support local at Queenstown Airport. Every day until 31 October, locals can take advantage of two hours free parking at the airport between 11.30am and 1.30pm. Jess Watson, Commercial Manager, said while the last 18 months had been tough for the airport’s tenants.

A coalition of 25 businesses jointly requested urgent approval from the Government to allow the group to import rapid antigen tests in a bid to bolster business’ response to Covid-19.

“We hope that free parking will encourage locals to enjoy lunch or the opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping at one of our great outlets.” The initiative is part of Queenstown Airport’s wider support programme, implemented in early 2020, which has provided over $6.75million in rent relief and other in-kind support to its tenants.

Queenstown Airport CEO Glen Sowry said he was heartened the Government had given the green light to rapid surveillance testing. “Rapid antigen testing provides an additional layer of health protection for employees and helps to ensure workplace continuity. “Alongside vaccination, efficient and accessible testing is key to ensuring we get our economy moving and reconnect with the world, while keeping people safe.”

Women in Business The Airport has also announced a new partnership with the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce to present a Women in Business Series. The programme has been designed to support, empower, and connect local businesswomen to showcase prominent local and national business leaders. Monthly morning teas kick off on the 5 November with Queenstown Airport Director and local business leader Anne Urlwin, talking about her “Reflections on Governing in a Pandemic.” The first quarterly Women in Business Lunch will feature Air New Zealand’s Chair Dame Therese Walsh on the 19 November. In the first month the series will highlight women in aviation while the rest of the programme will feature a range of diverse business leaders including breathing coach Emma Ferris, fitness extraordinaire Kate Ivey, lawyer Fiona McMillan, and many more. Sara Irvine, GM Corporate and Community Affairs said she was excited to be partnering with the Chamber on a great initiative. “There’s been a lot of change and challenge over the past couple of years and we hope this new series gives women an opportunity to come together, learn from each other in an inclusive and welcoming environment, and showcase the diversity of talent and experience in this part of the world.”

To enter the Rinse, Recycle, Repeat competition all you need to do is create a video that shows how you make sure all your recycling is clean before it goes into the recycling bin. Then post it on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn, tagging @RinseRecycleRepeatNZ (or @RinseRecycleNZ on Twitter) in your post.

The campaign aims to help people understand what can and can’t be recycled, especially around plastics.

New Zealand is one of the highest generators of waste per person in the world. On average, every year each New Zealander sends approximately 750kgs of waste to landfill, and much of this could be recycled, re-processed or reused. In 2019, waste contributed about 4 per cent of Aotearoa New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions and around 9 per cent of its biogenic methane emissions. We can do better, and New Zealanders are demanding change. QLDC Waste Minimisation Officer Kath Buttar said the campaign was a great way to engage people in recycling.

“We’re also hoping to demystify recycling and bust a few myths along the way,” said Ms Buttar. QLDC has set up a new hotline you can call with any recycling questions. From what can go in your yellow bin to understanding where your recycling goes, the hotline can be reached by calling 03 441 0499 (Queenstown) or 03 443 0024 (Wānaka). The campaign will feature posters, library displays, a new video featuring local wrestling legend ‘Hooligan’ Marcus Kool Entries for the Rinse, Recycle, Repeat competition close 5 November and one lucky entrant will win the cash prize.
