Let’s not let traffic cones get in the way of community I’m not a writer, I’m an artist. So forgive my ‘shoot straight from the heart’ essay. I formed The Ivy Box art gallery down on beautiful Park Street right next to Jubilee Park and just across from the lake in 2015. When I opened it, I had a vision to create something different in Queenstown. I wanted to share a space with like-minded creatives who were not bound by chains of commercialism. A space where it is OK to express oneself freely. After extensive renovations to what was a cold, old building (it was Queenstown’s original butcher’s shop back in the day), we’ve recently re-opened our gallery. Myself and the most amazing artists, sculptors, jewellery-makers are exhibiting now at the gallery. We have brought rawness and passion to the table and I think it is truly worth a detour to get here and see what talented local artists have to offer. And it truly is a detour. Park Street is a mess. There’s been many disruptions over the years, but now there’s more traffic cones and confusing signs than ever. The roadworks and stormwater improvements happening to Park and Suburb Streets seems unending. Town has also suffered, with many amazing shops, galleries and cafes hidden behind traffic cones and noisy machinery. Yes, these are important infrastructure works, but the disruption to life, work and our sense of community during this difficult time is palpable. The Council and local crews have been very supportive with signage and trying to keep The Ivy Box gallery and affected parts of town in sight. But we and other local organisations and businesses still need your support. We’re asking you to make an exception out of your day because we’re a creative group of sensitive souls, who enjoy the interaction of others. Who, when a person in some way resonates with a piece of our art and expresses that feeling, it’s music to our souls. Also it may surprise you, we’re not all arty talk. We can hold a healthy conversation like the best of them and enjoy a good hearty debate! We miss our local community and we’d like to see you again. Why would you let some roadworks get in the way of visiting this most outstanding gallery forged from passion and love? Yes, it does resemble Las Vegas but detour VEINT Street carry on down, turn right then left onto PARK STREET and you will find us. I encourage you to come back to town. Visit us on Park Street again. Turn your back to the traffic cones and take a moment to enjoy the view and embrace the Queenstown community. Take a moment to remember why you live in this beautiful town. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon.

A season for the locals It’s the final week of skiing in the Whakatipu for the 2021 season.
Post-lockdown business levels have also been good. While the Australian market has been absent since the bubble popped completely on July 23, the domestic South Island market has been strong.
The Remarkables closes this coming Sunday, October 17, bringing the curtain down on another winter interrupted by the pandemic.
“After three weeks locked up, skiing was still one of those things they wanted to achieve this winter.”
Remarks ski area manager Ross Lawrence says it’s been a reasonably positive season, all things considered.
That’s led to the usual demand for carparking, with Kiwis keen to drive, especially since promoting ride-sharing had to be abandoned in level two, and also lunchtime demand. Discussions continue around how to cater for the demand, with pop-up outlets around the mountain one idea under consideration.

“Certainly Kiwis have come out to play, which has been very good,” he says. “Earlier in the season, we had our busiest day ever, with 4,500 people here. And then we were heading into our best snow conditions, when we had to stay home for three weeks.” The Delta outbreak saw New Zealand move into an Alert Level 4 lockdown midway through the season on August 17, leaving Queenstowners to look longingly at the snow-capped mountains after a huge snowfall. The Remarks, Coronet and other skifields remain closed through Alert Level 3, but were able to reopen under strict protocols when the country moved down to Alert Level 2 on September 7. Restrictions included an initial cap on the number of people allowed in the base building, and the need to wear masks on the chairlifts and in queues. “That’s been the biggest challenge for staff. 95% of the patronage has been very positive, but 1 or 2% disagree. They’ve had to stop the lift on several occasions and ask people to leave the queue because they didn’t want to put a mask on.” NZSki had a dry run last season of what operations could look like at Alert Level 2, before NZ quickly moved down to level 1, so they were prepared with the protocols.
Queenstowner Natalie Urbani has made more of the season than most. She was presented with a bottle of champagne at The Remarks on Sunday after successfully achieving 1 million vertical meters skiing this winter at both NZSki Queenstown mountains. Lawrence says the major plans for the summer will be to complete the snowmaking system up through the new Cross Fall trail, down from Sugar Bowl, a two-month job to install nine or 10 guns and associated infrastructure. Sugar Bowl has proved popular this winter, after last summer’s work to widen and manicure the trails, with snowmaking now right up through Serpentine. “Now the chair goes up over there people can see what the terrain is like and it’s been exceptional, very positive feedback.” There’ll be a Retro Day this Sunday, October 17, to mark the end of the season, with 80s Day-Glo fashion the order of the day, and also a pond-skim and DJs. While that will be it for the Whakatipu, the season continues for another week at Cardrora Alpine Resort, which has announced an extension until October 24.
Finding specialist staff has been difficult, though, with the borders closed, especially for the grooming team and snowsports school. “They’re definitely specialised roles and previously we’ve relied on people from off-shore, so both those areas have taken a bit of a hit this year. “But it’s also given people an opportunity to step up.” There have been 180 staff on the mountain, compared to around 320 at peak.

Te Atamira reaches halfway milestone by Paul Taylor
Fundraising for a $4.2 million arts and culture venue in Queenstown has reached the halfway mark.
Crew, Turn up the Music, Queenstown Arts Centre and several independent art and music teachers.
Te Atamira will cater to more than 40 groups and organisations in the 1,400sqm corner building on the lower terrace of Remarkables Park, formerly Bed, Bath & Beyond.
“Central Lakes Trust’s support is an important seal of approval and vote of confidence that this project is by and for the community,” Egerton says.
It will offer two dance studios, two theatre spaces, a recording studio, multiple artist studios and music spaces, a pottery workshop, a workshop classroom, a curated art gallery, and a flexible youth focused space.
“It also realises the decades of hard work of many who have supported arts and culture, and done so without fit-for-purpose facilities. Hopefully, they will soon have a well-designed and equipped space to create in.”
The project is “now another step closer” says Te Atamira development director Olivia Egerton, thanks to a $700,000 grant from the Central Lakes Trust.
CLT chair Linda Robertson says the organisation recognises the need to respond to the region’s population growth and the importance of arts and culture to our Queenstown Lakes’ long term resilience.
“We are all elated!” Egerton says.
“Arts and culture enrich people’s quality of life and contribute to the cultural, social and economic vitality of the district, something we need more than ever,” Robertson says.
“Along with private donors and support from businesses, CLT’s grant means we are now over halfway to having all the funding in place. “We are hopeful other funders will also support this worthy cause. We are continuing to push forward, and we will hopefully commence work on the fit-out in the first week of November.” Groups eager to use the space include the Wakatipu Potters and the Queenstown Performing Arts Trust which includes DEVOS dance, Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet, Remarkables Dance
“That over 40 groups have already indicated they would use the space shows the demand is certainly there.” Since the Trust commenced 21 years ago, it has granted over $132 million back into the community. A total of $7.73 million of the $9.60 million grants budget for the 2021/22 financial year has been allocated to date, with three funding rounds remaining in the current financial year.

Motatpu’s new run by Paul Taylor
Motatapu organisers have announced a new junior run as the part of next year’s event. The 4km run on Saturday, 5 March, is open to children between 7 15 years old and will have a limited entry of 150, so is expected to sell out fast. The race will start and finish at Wilcox Green in Arrowtown at 1pm, on the same day as the Motatapu and will take participants on a loop along the Arrow River Bridges Trail. The trail is smooth and hard-packed with a few small undulations, which should not stop even the smallest legs. Entry starts at $20. “We are stoked to be able to bring back a kids race to the Macpac Motatapu,” Race Director Gemma Peskett says. “The Jennian Homes Junior Trail Run is a perfect addition to our race day and we love having our tamariki involved in our event, out there having fun with their friends and family.” The Macpac Motatapu is one of the largest off-road event on the New Zealand sporting calendar, with close to 4000 participants in 2020 It is held annually in March in Queenstown and Wanaka, traversing Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe high country stations. There will be five events next March - a 52.5km Ultra Run, 42km Off-Road Marathon (run or walk options), 47km UDC Mountain Bike (individual, teams and e-bike options), 15km Miners Trail (run & walk options) and 4km Jennian Homes Junior Trail Run. The Ultra Run and Off-Road Marathon have sold out but waitlists are operational. The UDC Mountain Bike and Miners Trail entries are at 90% full.

Public access to Shotover River canyon by Staff Report
Queenstown’s community will be able to access an iconic section of the Shotover Rover, previously reserved for jetboats. After a review of its bylaw, Queenstown’s council will allow nonmotorised users, such as kayakers and paddleboarders, along the river between between Oxenbridge Tunnel and Tuckers Beach. That’s the canyon used by Shotover Jet. The community will be able to use that section of river two evenings a week, from 5.30pm through to 9.00pm on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Councillor Quentin Smith (who sat on the hearing panel) says: “Significant progress has been made towards public recreational access in this decision, and for the first time in a generation our community will have the chance to enjoy an iconic part of New Zealand and the Queenstown Lakes District on a regular basis.” Initially, the blanket permit on Wednesday and Friday evenings will be run as a trial for 12 weeks, up until Friday 17 December. Those interested in enjoying the Shotover River during the permit period are asked to research conditions, and to be conscious of their skill level before heading out on the water. For those looking to access Shotover River outside the blanket permit times, a permit is still required. Users must contact Shotover Jet to arrange for this permit, following which all current permits will be displayed on QLDC’s website. QLDC worked with Shotover Jet and the Arthurs Point Community Association to improve the community access to the river.

A significant victory for the Queenstown community was delivered when continuing pressure resulted in a major shift in the Government’s border policies. After months of lobbying and working with many migrant folks coming through my office, often with heartbreaking stories, it was pleasing that so many of our vital community members have been given the chance to call Queenstown their permanent home. For decades skilled migrant workers have helped build the Queenstown we know today. That is the Queenstown known around the world as a must-visit destination for any international tourist. There is a rich history of overseas workers coming to our town to form a crucial part of our experience, hospitality, health and education industries as well as many other sectors that support our community. It is incredibly pleasing that those of you that are here today and have helped Queenstown through an incredibly trying 18 months now have certainty about your futures. National outlined a plan to secure the futures of 165,000 migrant workers in New Zealand at the beginning of August. It was great to see the Government adopt most of our ideas including our concept of rewarding those who have worked hard to keep our country going through Covid. With Delta having made something of a permanent move into our country, now is the time for more cross-party co-operation. National is backing Labour’s call for a massive vaccination drive on ‘Super Saturday’ October 16. I would also like to see the Government adopt National’s recently announced Covid plan named ‘Opening Up’. The Delta variant has been a game changer as it has established itself in the upper North Island, and the Government has had to change its policies to address it. I have said throughout the pandemic that the southern region needs a plan and that could not be more important now. National has delivered a blueprint for the Government in the Opening Up proposal and my colleagues and I are lobbying hard to see its major aims taken up. Any Government plan to take our country forward should provide a pathway forward, which ends lockdowns and lifts restrictions in areas free of Covid and with strong vaccination rates. It should also address what our community needs now, as well as the possibility that Delta could make it to the South Island. That means providing targeted support for businesses paying fixed costs while forced into a reduced operating capacity. It also means moving very quickly to strengthen ICU capacity in places like the Queenstown-Lakes District. New Zealand’s elimination approach has been based on protecting New Zealand’s under-resourced health system. However Delta has forced a change in that approach, and our hospitals need a major boost to increase their capacity. To deliver the country’s roadmap, my National colleagues and I are calling on the Government to refine its focus. That means redirecting resources and energy from other projects like the Three Waters Reforms to concentrate on the threat of the Delta variant, the need to increase vaccination numbers, as well as significantly strengthen our ICU facilities. Right now the safety of our communities must come first.

Simply go to letstalk.qldc.govt.nz The 2021 survey focuses on how residents feel about employment, housing, health services, the environment, transport, growth, and the ongoing effects of COVID-19. The information you provide helps to build up a long-term picture of how our district is faring. It helps Council and public service providers understand what the big issues and challenges facing our communities are so they can plan for a better tomorrow. It’s also a great opportunity to share what’s going well and the things you love about our beautiful part of the world. The survey will take around 20-25 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous – you will not be identified by any information you provide. The survey is open to all members of our community 18 years and over (not just ratepayers), so grab a cuppa and share your thoughts today. You can also opt into the prize draw to win one of four $250 Prezzy cards! Prize winners will be announced shortly after the close date and a summary of findings will be published towards the end of 2021. Last year’s survey found that overall quality of life was rated as extremely good (32%) or good (49%), while 16% said their quality of life was average and 3% poor and extremely poor. The impacts of COVID-19 were being felt across the district and often reflected in employment and welfare statistics. Climate change was also a concern for people.
Abbas Nazari is author of After the Tampa - From Afghanistan to New Zealand. Various projects have been prioritised based on the past three years’ survey findings, such as drafting a climate action plan and holding discussions with the Southern District Health Board and Ministry of Health about access to health services. The survey’s results have also guided Council decisions including the QLDC 2021-2031 Ten Year Plan.

With no clear path forward and a lot of confusion, it is perfectly human to feel exhausted by this but I wouldn’t recommend you staying there for too much longer. It’s not healthy and rather taxing on the mental state. A decision should be made, and depending which way it goes, there may be hurt and a lot to mend. Be prepared for this. Trust and self-worth are serious emotions to be questioned. It sounds like you have tried to break-up but the cut wasn’t clean. There are still loose threads attached. While you may be living apart, there are other things tying you together; this could be friends, that big ticket item you bought together, or maybe the fur baby you both raised. The thought of total separation feels gutwrenching but it does present a direction and opens the path to heal. Your good friends will be by your side no matter the outcome. He’s invited you into his world and you’ve embraced it, but like any relationship with longevity, the honeymoon stage passes and you start to see the less than perfect sides. There’s always one that makes the lifestyle or career sacrifice to be with their loved one but it’s important for that person to be headstrong about their own individuality and dignity. Hindsight and regret are wasted energy because they are irreversible. A good relationship pushes through those lulls, addresses the issue and finds middle ground. Slapping patches on something that is broken isn’t going to fix anything, it’ll bust up again later down the track and is only delaying the inevitable. Use this limbo to dig deep into the core of the problem. What needs to change in the relationship to make you happy? What habits do you need to change? Can they change if they’re with you? If not, can you live with that? Perhaps this time apart might allow you to get reacquainted with yourself again. How can you love someone else if you don’t love yourself? Self-worth and confidence can only be fixed by thy-self. They should feel lucky to be with you and you should feel lucky to be with them. If the feeling is not mutual, can you truly be happy?

How would it be if your children believed GOOD THINGS about themselves? Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
One simple step that allows you to help them. As a Mum of twin boys, I know first hand how important it is to install great belief systems in our children. Before I studied our neurology and how it works, I had no idea this was even an option. I thought all we had to do as parents was love them, keep them safe and do what parents do.

Here’s what we say:
When an adult has lived with this limiting belief for 45 years and bore the evidence of this showing up daily, I often think how much easier life would have been for them if they were able to have removed this limiting belief when they were much younger.
You are kind. You are intelligent. You have all you need inside of you. You are happy. You are safe and secure. You are loveable and Momma and I love you very, very much.
Or never had it at all.
And that’s it!
So how are belief systems stalled?
I have been sharing this almost every time I speak to a group now and parents are giving me feedback, their kids love it.
Before the age of 7 there is no gate keeper for a childs neurology, basically everything is downloaded from the child’s environment. If a caregiver says to a child in a joking way “Oh you are such a silly girl.” The Child’s brain hears, I am silly and then goes out to find evidence to prove that this is true. A limiting belief has been successfully installed and our team of global belief change coders see this show up all the time. Clients who have had enough and want to change their lives. Here’s a preventative measure rather than fixing the limiting belief after it has been running for 10, 20, 30 and in one client’s instance 75 years later. When my wife Sarah was pregnant with our twins we decided to create our installation list of empowering beliefs, we recorded this and played it to them everyday whilst in the womb. We now say this every day to them just before they head to bed. We will continue to do this until they tell us

They have reported that children as young as 4 years old create their own actions to go with the words, they ask for it to be said at bed time and then say their own words back to their parents, it brings tears to their eyes as they hear their child say empowering things back to them. Installing powerful beliefs in our children means we are giving them a strong foundation, then if a caregiver says something in jest, it will most likely be diluted by the power of the beliefs that you have installed purposefully in them for life.

Are they coming back?
How are you? No, really? by Anna Dorsey, Southern Wellbeing Trust General Manager
“How are you?” This question is part of our Kiwi DNA. We ask it several times a day, but what do we do if the answer is “actually not that great” or “mmm, OK”? Firstly, it’s important to remember that everyone on the planet has ups and downs - it’s a fact of life. Yet now, thanks to COVID, so many of us are experiencing new, real challenges that we’ve never faced before. That means for some of us things actually aren’t “good thanks”. If you’re lucky, you have someone in your life you can talk to. Someone who cares and who won’t judge, dismiss or change the subject but will be supportive and listen with compassion. Someone who’s on your team and wants the best for you. And from a community perspective, we have a team of 42,000 (our Queenstown Lakes population) who can be there for each other, to listen with kindness and provide practical support when it’s needed. As a Trust, we strongly believe that by giving as many people as possible the tools and confidence to know how to help when their partner, neighbour, friend or colleague is struggling, our community gets stronger. After all, we’re all in this together. It sounds easy but actually being worried about what to say can often stop you from saying anything. But you don’t have to be an expert to talk about mental wellbeing. The Southern Wellbeing Trust developed the GoodYarn community pilot to train up members of our communities who have been hard hit by COVID, and deliver targeted, evidence-based mental health education to their peers, in their native language, or in locations that best suit each group. Our aim is to help build a strong foundation of mental health awareness across the Queenstown Lakes community so that people can look after their own wellbeing, look after each other, and know how and where to access support. Together we’re stronger. This month we’re partnering with local tourism operator Ziptrek Ecotours on its #Wellbeing ForWhakatipu initiative. Highlighting the 5 Ways to Wellbeing through a month-long promotion is about helping people understand how they can take action to look after their own mental wellbeing. Plus, with $15 of each Ziptrek tour going towards supporting the Trust to deliver these workshops, we can continue to expand mental health education in the community. This town is full of amazing people so let’s continue to show each other how much we care. Next time you ask the question, really ask “how are you?”. Bonzo waiting on number one They pick up the keys but not the lead. Dr Lucy Scott from Veterinary Behaviour Services NZ, calls this a ‘departure cue’. A small notion like this gets noticed under a dogs watch. It dawns on the dog that they’re not coming with. The barking starts, they might get vocally animated, some dogs crawl into their hidie hole, others might tear the place down. These are behavioural reactions to...
Separation anxiety The main source of sadness for a dog. The bond of human and canine can trace right back to the prehistoric age. Wolves were said to be the first animals to be domesticated by our primitive ancestors. Over generations the friendlier companions from the pack were kept and the genome in the wolf morphed into puppy eyes. Scientist agree that mammals share the same basic emotional wiring as human-beings. Dr Scott talks of a trial that saw whether dogs reacted in a pessimistic or an optimistic manner. The test involved two bowls, which was laid out for the dog subject, only one bowl had food. The test was repeated again with only one bowl. The observation was to see how fast the dog went for the bowl and whether they were optimistic that there would be food. Dogs that showed signs of stress after being left alone were more likely to be ‘pessimistic’. Diagnosing a dog with something like ’depression’ is subjective in this field since animals can’t communicate verbally how they’re feeling. Dr Scott admits that they treat a dog’s emotional disorder like they would with depression, with antidepressants. One global study found that a dog’s sight of their human companion resulted in higher level of Oxytocin than that of a treat. Oh god. Dogs really LOVE us. Flip works as a dog behaviourist in town and founded Remarkable Dogs. She believes depression among pets is ”100% a thing”. After the 1st lockdown Flip saw an increase in her services. She puts this down to the environment suddenly changing from a dog from having their best friends around all the time to ‘Woof! Where did they go?’.
“A few hours away feels like a few weeks for a dog” Says Flip. Both experts concur that sudden changes to routine can cause stress in a dogs world - Post lockdown, house move, new baby are life changing events can affect a dog’s emotional state. Flip’s advice is to slowly introduce change by smell, visual or sound. The simple act of keeping your jumper out while your away or providing them with a food distraction might make the momentary split less traumatic for your precious wee pooch.

Not only did it win the Hubert Church Award at the 1998 Montana New Zealand Book Awards, it also won the Adam Award, the regional Commonwealth Prize for Best First Novel, and a Betty Trask Award in the UK. Catherine has followed up with five more novels. Her most recent, the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards shortlisted Remote Sympathy, is an interrogation of the concept of wilful obliviousness, using Nazi Germany as its setting. At QWF, Catherine will chat to Queenstown journalist Debbie Jamieson about writing Remote Sympathy and touch on her earlier books and her current work in progress.

Intro: Amisfield has an outstanding reputation and so it was a mix of anticipation and excitement we stepped out to sample their new a la carte lunch recently. It truly is a special place with a great moral ethos of sourcing traceable local produce. An invitation to dine at Amisfield, I liken to a wedding invite. It incites one to dress for the occasion.

The Green Lipped Taco was colourful and unexpected. Who would’ve thought to put mussels in tacos?
The grandeur of the structure is imposing upon entering. That iconic schist masonry links the thoroughly modern building, with the history of our district in a timeless manner.
Paua Pie was all about the layers. Dark, creamy and generous on the paua. The main event
The internal setting: light and open. Sunlight contrasts with reclaimed wood, industrial metal and black stained furniture. The art is minimalistic and unapologetically kiwi.
Late afternoon we were presented with our main. A Titi bird on a mirrored platter with a vase of fresh picked brassicas. We understood the significance of this meal.
We sat, framed by the feature window - a symbol of the Amisfield logo. Waiters pulled out the chairs for us to settle in for what would be a 3-hour social affair. With a wine in hand, you immediately felt relaxed.
Titi was not a normal offering. It’s a dish with a story of place and of kiwi culture.
The staff The staff were welcoming and friendly. Lunch was a casual affair served by delightful, knowledgable people. I wanted our waiter, Maddie, to sit down and join us!
Numbers are extremely limited. A strict quota of birds are harvested each year of which just a few are available to Amisfield.
You can tell they enjoy seeing the effect this place has on its customers. It makes you slow down, enjoy food and the company around the table. The food
Plates were cleared and the thought of dessert seemed too much... but we persevered.
I craved a glass of chardonnay (my new white of choice) but I was expertly persuaded into sampling the 2019 Fumé Blanc and the waiter was right, it was surprisingly close to Chardonnay. A brioche and brut was served accompanied with a clever display of truffle and cultured butter disguised as rocks. A suitably masked chef named Sam wheeled his cooking station and started shucking shellfish that opened over coals while providing a backstory of where the produce came from. Foam was added to cover the shellfish on the dish ‘It looks like the ocean!’ said my dining partner. This food was telling a story. Kaimoana (seafood) was our entrée experience. The next two dishes were a play on some classics.

Sam talked of the Iwi who hold a license to harvest these birds on the Island of Tia of the east coast of Stewart Island.
Cooked in its own fat for 90 minutes (a style of traditional Māori cooking) then filled with a stuffing made from onion and tiptop style bread. Covered in a tamarillo sauce, we savoured our experience with this dish. There were hints of anchovy, it had texture like duck.
The a la carte lunch menu at Amisfield is a completely new experience offering more choice and flexibility than the previous “trust the chef” style lunch. We decided to build a selection of dishes around the Titi’ (muttonbird) main.

Dessert Two dessert options came out. The Sakura Blossom was showered in petals and a Chocolate Millefeuille that almost reminded of Ferrero Rocher. Amisfield is a special occasion and of course the experience reflects this.

Incredible thought and symbolism has gone into the curation of the menus. You are encouraged to take your time, there is no pressure to turn over tables. You’re meant to settle into the experience and fully catch up.

The Sopranos family comes to the big screen in “THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK“ For the lovers of the Sopranos the family returns! After more than a decade, the highly anticipated Soprano’s movie is headed to cinema’s NZ from the 4th of November. The Many Saints of Newark is not a continuation or a reboot of The Sopranos, which ran from 1999 to 2007. Instead, it’s a prequel that will follow a young Tony Soprano as he grows up in Newark, New Jersey, during the 1960s and 1970s. Soprano’s creator David Chase, however, has made it clear that film isn’t only about Tony. The film follows a violent gang war from the perspectives of mobster Dickie Moltisanti and his teenage nephew, Tony Soprano, during New Jerseys 1967 riots. It stars Alessandro Nivola as Dickie and Michael Gandolfini as Tony, the character originated by his father in the series.
A horrendous week for Facebook Last Tuesday Facebook and its subsidiary apps including Instagram, WhatsApp were utterly absent from the internet.
But worse for Facebook is the leaks that suggest the company understands precisely how bad it is for everyone, especially children, and doesn’t care. Money over everything else. Internal Facebook documents published in the Wall Street Journal’s show that the social media giant knowingly encourages anger and divisiveness on its platform, despite real-world and political consequences. Now, the Facebook employee who leaked this information is going public, just one day before Facebook is scheduled to attend a congressional hearing. The whistleblower also appeared on 60 Minutes ahead of the hearing and will appear before other government hearings in Europe and the UK These documents confirm that Facebook encourages divisiveness on its platform, despite ample evidence that “hate speech, divisive political speech, and misinformation on Facebook and the family of apps are affecting societies around the world.” And while Mark Zuckerberg, Facebooks CEO insists that Facebook fights misinformation and hate speech, the company’s research shows that it “may remove as little as 3-5% of hate, and about 0.6% of violence and incitement on its platform.”
Britney Spears thanks fans behind #FreeBritney movement after father removed from conservatorship Britney Spears has thanked fans who have called for years to #FreeBritney for major changes in the conservatorship that has long controlled her life and money. Spears’s expressed her gratitude in identical posts on Twitter and Instagram on Monday — her first public comments on the case since a judge suspended her father as conservator of her estate last week in a move, she had long expressed hope for. “I feel your hearts and you feel mine … that much I know is true,” she added. Spears has not been freed from the conservatorship entirely. The legal arrangement that has been in place since 2008 remains, minus her father, but it may be terminated at a November 12 hearing. ABC

Silver Lining: Enjoying the environment can distract from professional stress.

It’s now 20 months since New Zealand closed its borders with China. The loss of that market alone was expected to cause a significant dent in revenue for Queenstown businesses, but what has followed has pushed many to the brink of failure and others over the edge. Now, with ongoing lockdowns, closed borders and no definitive end in sight, the mental health cost, especially for smaller owner / operators in tourism and hospo sectors, is beginning to be evaluated alongside the financial hit.
“Stress levels are very, very high,” says Nik Kiddle, who owns the Villa del Lago holiday apartments and stood against Queenstown mayor Jim Boult at the last election. “It’s soul destroying running businesses at a loss, especially businesses that have been very successful in the past. “They’ve been enjoyable to work in but now it’s awful. You don’t want to get out of bed to go to work because you’re not making any money any more.” Kiddle, through the Lakes District Accommodation Sector lobby group, last month surveyed 146 accommodation and hospo businesses, receiving 58 replies. The stats make for grim reading, as have recent Chamber of Commerce surveys, and show why many business owners are feeling the pressure. More than 38% have lost over $1 million since Covid hit, and almost half won’t survive another six months if lockdowns continue. Kiddle says the resurgence payments, between $5,000 and $10,000 are therefore “not even a band aid”. Almost two thirds of respondents have lost more than half their workforces. “That’s the other thing we do hear. . . some owner operators are working extraordinarily long hours and long days filling in the gaps that their employees used to fill. So there’s a lot of overwork stress happening.”

He questions why Government funds have gone towards business advice initiatives rather
than direct to the coalface, causing business consultants to cold call without even knowing what your business is, wasting more time. Uncertainty has also caused stress for staff, although that has been offset by the wage subsidy. Kiddle himself, and no doubt some others, manage to separate the personal and professional, making the most of the extra time when there are no bookings. “It’s hard to pick yourself up off the floor and get on with life. “Fortunately we all have our leisure activities in this district to throw ourselves into, such as skiing, and a lot of leisure time makes up for the lack of business activity. “There’s a lot to do here and that keeps people ticking over and reasonably happy in a personal sense, but professionally it’s devastating.” The psychological impact on business owners has been highlighted by the Tourism Industry Association. Three quarters of respondents to a survey conducted in July and August, nationally, were concerned about their personal health and wellbeing, with 9% being very concerned. Stress, uncertainty, mental toll, fatigue, depression and financial worry were the main concerns. TIA chief executive Chris Roberts said the findings were “sobering”, especially as tourism operators “are part of an industry that was the first to be hit by the pandemic and will be the last to recover”.
QT BUSINESS TIA has since launched a new partnership with EAP Services to provide employee assistance support to members, including counselling, at a heavily discounted rate.
“There are so many of them, but they include not sleeping, lack of motivation, low mood, suicidal thoughts for some people of course, restlessness, withdrawing.”
And earlier this month, the organisation also hosted a mental health webinar, with guest speakers including Mental Health Foundation CEO Shaun Robinson and Queenstown wellbeing advocate Mel Haarer.
Haarer plans to focus on two of the five ways to improve wellbeing, including explaining the science behind Be Active, and how to Take Notice. That includes mindfulness and breathing exercises.
Haarer, who came to NZ from the UK 15 years ago, began researching how to reduce isolation and vulnerability in communities after suffering post natal depression and anxiety, coupled with grief.
“It’s about how to manage stress and slow the central nervous system down.”
With a background in tourism management and the care industry, working with young people with challenging behaviour, she developed a programme of wellbeing workshops, initially for the community.
“That’s to reinforce the idea of living in the present moment. When you’re flying in a tunnel, you’re not worrying about the future or the past.
It has since blossomed into a business, Connect and Care NZ, and Haarer has delivered more than 100 workshops to local businesses, including Skyline, Millbrook, Downer and Queenstown Primary’s teacher team. She uses the Mental Health Foundation NZ’s Five Ways to Wellbeing (Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning, Give) as a framework. “It’s a really simple, pragmatic approach to best help people look after themselves and each other,” she says. With funding from the Drury family, Connect and Care NZ is running three free workshops over the coming months at iFly, on 19 October, 17 November and 10 December, for owner / operators and their teams. “There’s a huge need from businesses at the moment,” Haarer says.
“Everyone’s really feeling the pressure this time because of the uncertainty about borders and, basically, not knowing whether to keep their businesses open.” The three-hour workshops will teach people about the fight, flight and fear responses to stress and how to spot signs of anxiety and depression.

There are 16 places at each workshop, with the same content on each date, and a free flight in the iFly tunnel at the end.
“And how awesome is that, bloody amazing.” The workshops are non-hierarchical, open to directors, managers and staff. “Anyone with a heart and a head can be affected by stress.”
Ziptrek Ecotours and the Southern Wellbeing Trust are also using the Five Ways to Wellbeing as a template for their own five-week #WellbeingForWhakatipu initiative. They’re partnering with other like-minded business, including Kiwi Birdlife Park, to run activities centered around the five ways, including coffee catch-up giveaways, treasure hunts on the Tiki Trail and guided meditation in Ziptrek treehouses. And $15 from each Ziptrek direct booking will also go to Southern Wellbeing Trust up until end of October, to help support community mental wellbeing initiatives. Ziptrek director Trent Yeo says within the busine ss community, the owner / operators need as much help with wellbeing as the staff. “I wouldn’t say there’s an increased anxiety within our staff, but I’d definitely saying all business owners are feeling the pinch,” he says. “Keeping people motivated, money in people’s

pockets and keeping a business afloat and viable during this time, business owners are definitely feeling it. “This stuff is difficult to juggle, especially with home life and kids.” Yeo says for his staff, he’s fortunate most are into the lifestyle and outdoors, rather than just being in it for a paid job, so with the extra time, the company has taken a few ski days and done other things together, such as pizza nights and quizzes. “Part of wellbeing is people realising you do actually care, so not necessarily programmes that you do but how you act everyday. “That’s not a policy, but just things that pop up and we see as opportunities to be positive, time to spend in the outdoors, enjoying the place we live, embracing why we’re here, even if the situation is not one we’ve chosen.” Making regular touches, such as gifting his leadership crew a book of Māori proverbs for Māori Language Week, has been a way to keeping morale up. “As a business owner, I don’t have a bottomless pit of money to just throw down fun things on my staff, so it’s more about the ad hoc stuff and genuinely caring.” He’s also looking at redeploying staff into conservation to help Wilding & Co. Co-founder Monique Kelly says there’s something for everyone, at every stage on their journey, at this year’s summit. “This is our fourth annual summit and this year we really wanted to focus on a cross-pollination of ideas between people.
“We’re all at different stages along the sustainability (or regenerative, as we’d like to work towards) path, and the summit is creating an opportunity for people to come together, share ideas, and there’s a lot of peer-to-peer learning.” Monique says coming together as a community is a key component of the summit. “If we’re going to get where we need to be in a decade’s time, we have to partner up, because we can’t do it by ourselves. But as a collective, we can learn from each other and we can accelerate faster and we can also make sure that we are leaving no one behind. So we’re trying to provide different opportunities for industry groups, different community groups, whomever it is, to come together.”
“You can’t unknow what you know,” she adds, “even if that’s a little bit scary or if you’re unsure, it’s better to have as much information as you can. Then you can put it through your own critical assessment of what you think is important to you and your business or not. And then you can plan out a strategy in a much more effective manner when you’ve got all the information you need to future-proof your business.” Tickets, registration for free events and the full summit programme for Wao are available at wao.co.nz. The summit runs 26th – 31st October 2021, with most events held in central Wanaka.
There are more than 40 different kōrero, workshops, films and tours at this year’s Wao Summit. There’s a hui and several talks specifically for the tourism industry. There’s talks and workshops on topics as diverse as finance, mental health and fashion. “We’re having a ‘Buy Less, Buy Better’ fashion discussion and a catwalk on Saturday night and that’s about us as individuals saying: well, how do I consume and what do I consume and understanding more about the impact of our choices on what we buy and how we buy. “[…] Then we have our ‘Food and Fibre’ that’s an industry discussion focussing on two things; food security as well as land transformation – about how we can produce food in a way that we are looking after the environment and we’re looking after the community. “So it is a really exciting, jam-packed event.” Guest speakers at the event include Sophie Hanford, the young woman who was the national coordinator of the School Strikes 4 Climate in March 2019. Now, at the age of 19, she’s New Zealand’s youngest elected councillor. Author and Fulbright Scholar Abbas Nazari will speak at two events; Harnessing Hope for a Better Future (on mental health), and It’s Your Future (on how to get involved with climate change action). Abbas is a former refugee from Afghanistan and has written about his experiences in his memoir, After the Tampa. He’ll talk about how climate change drives migration and social change more than we think. Monique Kelly will also be speaking, at the Stories of Collective Intelligence event. Monique is the co-founder of Revology, a natural fibre composite start-up and Wanaka-based concept store. She’s also a consultant on employment, labour and human rights standards for the United Nations International Labour Organisation. On starting Wao, she says: “I’d worked on human rights law since 2001. I was in the International Labour Organisation and working on it, looking at work and employment issues. My focus has been on everything from

Opening a bricks-and-mortar store, in a tourist town, in the middle of a pandemic, should be enough to give you some sleepless nights. But for BedsRus franchisee Ricky Proctor, it has proved a successful endeavor. Proctor, who also owns the Dunedin franchise of the specialist bed and mattress shop and is on the board of the brand, took over the old Whitcoulls premises in Remarkables Park early last year. “We’d actually planned it all before the pandemic hit,” he says. “We had the carpets down, the walls were painted, most of the signage was done, and then we went into the first lockdown.” The company had hired three staff for opening, including one who was in the process of building their own home.
“So we were paying them all even though they hadn’t started, because the world was in turmoil and we felt we needed to help them too. “But sitting at home in Dunedin through lockdown with some rather large invoices coming through was not fun.” Since then, though, sales have “skyrocketed”, Proctor says. The franchise now employs 6 staff for the 360sqm premises, where it can showcase up to 30 beds. The success is down to the products it offers, including the country’s number one brand NZmade Sleepyhead beds, and BedsRus’ position as the largest specialist store, with now 50 shops, Proctor says.
That had aligned with a focus on customer service. “For the past five years, my focus has been for my staff to have the best customer service. We’re not about closing the sale, just about the right product for the right person.
“When I first bought the business in Dunedin, I said to my wife in five years I want my dream truck. “One just happened to come up for sale in Christchurch, it was New Zealand new, righthand drive. I’m the third owner, for a 65-year-old truck.
“There are so many different things that can help you stay asleep longer.”

The science of sleep has taken a step forward in recent years, while the need for a good night’s sleep has become recognised as a key component of physical and mental wellbeing.
It is also taken to Otago Rugby Football Union NPC games, used to distribute rugby balls to the crowd at half-time. BedsRus is a matchday and player sponsor, giving away a free bed each home game.
Proctor says there are now copper-infused foams, colloidal silver-infused foams, bamboo-threaded foams, and other bed tech which will cater to different body types, postures and personal preferences. “That’s what finding the right bed is about, one that will mold to you, hold your body in the right position, help with temperature regulation.” It’s also a very physical choice, a shopping experience difficult to replicate on line. That will take another step forward soon, with a Sleepyhead SleepMap service in store - a bed packed with 10,000 sensors which displays a pressure map of the body. All that informs BedsRus advertising, with focus on sleep tips and questions to ask in store, rather than just the latest sale. Proctor also ensure his franchises have a visible presence in the community, with his unmissable branded baby blue 1955 Chevy pick up truck.
Proctor says initially it was a difficult decision to open in Queenstown, but after scouting around Central Otago, including Cromwell and Wanaka they realised it was definitely the place to be and the right premises. And, like everyone else here, he’s fallen in love with the place. “We were only coming here for a month to get the shop open, train the staff and then go back home to Dunedin. Well, within two weeks my wife and I were looking at each other going ‘we need to be here’. So we’re now locals.” The next step is a standalone furniture business, Queenstown Furniture Gallery, which opens on October 22 in the former H&J Elements Outdoor World premises, also in Remarkables Park.

Businesses already have Christmas front of mind, hoping Covid-19 won’t be a grinch again. Getting stock into the country last holiday season was a stressful time for many, largely because of how Covid-19 impacted global shipping.
On the other hand, New Zealand Toy Distributors Association president Geoff Lyons felt like shipping at the moment was a nightmare.

“We’re starting to send messages to our customers about thinking about their Christmas presents now, in October, rather than in late November.”
There were also problems at New Zealand’s largest port, the Ports of Auckland.
The cost of freight from China had gone up “as much as four-fold from last year”, he said.
He had even brought on extra summer staff early to help process the stock already coming in.
Businesses like champagne importer Three French Vines, which ran out of some stock last summer, want to make sure they can combat ongoing global shipping delays.
“So a container that was costing me $4000 last year, the latest one I’ve had is just over $17,000.”
Last year in New Zealand, the impacts on global shipping by Covid-19 were sitting on top of challenges relating to staffing and operations at Ports of Auckland.
Director Andrew Lyndsay said they had tried hard to plan ahead for the holiday season, but he ultimately believed he would experience shortages again. Lyndsay said they ordered stock early, making estimates based on sales over the last few Christmas and New Year periods, but whether it matched this year’s demand was a complete guessing game. He did not see any risk if they ordered too much champagne because they can sell an aged wine. “We sell champagne that was bottled, for example, in 1975 and it’s as beautiful today as it was then.”
Lyons said his toy distribution company Haka New Zealand tried to absorb some costs but some would be relayed to the customer. He said the toy sector started preparing for Christmas in about April, which was normal. Despite shipping delays being weeks-long, he was confident all his Christmas stock will be in the country by 25 December. “Whether we can physically get all of that stock in the stores pre-Christmas is going to be the tester,” he said. To try combat delays, Unity Books had expanded storage space and was getting stock for months ahead - through into February - instead of weeks. Adrian

QT BUSINESS Business qualifications for SME owners needed The Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) sector of New Zealand’s economy makes a significant contribution to the nation’s economic health. 97% of all businesses are SME’s with 1-5 employees, 630,000 people are employed in these businesses, which is 29% of all employees, and they generate 28% of NZ GDP. These are publicly available statistics from prior to Covid so will be different now – but whichever way you look at it , the SME sector is a vital ingredient to a flourishing New Zealand economy. Many SME owners are very passionate and highly skilled at what they do (think vets, nurses, sparkies, tourist operators etc ) - but are often not so good at running a business. They have never been trained into the basics of running an enterprise. Schools in NZ do not provide any insight into running a business, NZ tertiary institutions also do not give any training on running a business, at work education (the Industry Training Organisation sector, ITO) does not cover the skills required to running a successful business. For all the money, advise and knowledge that is available through various sources training for this critical business group falls through the cracks; Central Govt does not understand the SME sector, government advisors (Wellington Beltway) are well intentioned but work at a higher level, local government say it is not in their remit, Universities wouldn’t lower themselves, technical colleges are disinterested, ITO sector do not have SME efficiency as their remit and the big consultants are generally after the big money. For the past decade I have been based in Queenstown working with this same sector – supporting, advising, mentoring. Every day I find basic weaknesses in the way businesses I work with are run – planning, systems, marketing, costings, customer experience, operations, etc. What support there is and there are numerous sources of with good intentions, excellent information, financial support and expertise but for an SME, it is hard to find, it’s not streamlined, co-ordnated and there is overlap, poorly targeted and often woefully presented and lack of funds at key parts of the journey. In summary. The SME sector is critical to this countries economic prosperity and there is a desperate need for a formalised and nationally recognised small business qualification. I continually get feedback from a variety of support services to this sector such as banks, lawyers, accountants, HR, marketing and IT firms, all saying that there is a need for a Level 4 (or higher) Diploma to provide small business owners with the skills, knowledge and support to be more productive and profitable in their businesses so they can operate better, build greater equity in the business and have a life/work balance at the same time. If we had a small business qualification we would see improved productivity in the SME sector, increased employment, reduce business failure, reduced mental health issues, less strain on the life /work balance etc. Statistics published by Govt could measure success against KPI’s such as greater profitability, greater employment, and a reduction in business failure etc. A significant result could be the creation of a SME Qualification that could be exported around the world which would create a new stream to the New Zealand Education Export industry What do you think?

The investment arm of Ngāi Tahu has posted a $240 million profit for the year to June 30, bouncing back from a $25.6m loss a year earlier. The result was the best in Ngāi Tahu Holdings’ history, and better than forecast.
