Letter to Aucklanders I thought I would share with you an open letter I sent to Aucklanders last week. I wanted to let them know that we appreciate both that they’ve borne the brunt of heavy Level 3 and 4 restrictions, and that we are right beside them in experiencing tough times – because they’re not here. The Auckland lockdown has unfortunately served as yet another reminder of the importance of our Kiwi visitors. We all have friends, family and colleagues in the North that have been doing it especially tough and I know that when the time comes, and it’s safe to travel everyone here will welcome them back with great service, a warm welcome and a big thanks for coming. Mayor Jim Boult Dear Aucklanders, I’ve just heard your news of 45 new cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19. It’s pretty obvious that you are going through a tough time at present and I thought some words from the South might help and let you know we’re all thinking of you. Firstly, while in this part of the world we’re wondering why we’re still in Level 2 (when we haven’t had a case in the South Island since May 2020) we do feel deeply for our friends, whānau and colleagues in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and we’re grateful for the hard yards you’ve done for the safety of the rest of us and for each other. With close family in your city, I am frequently kept up to date with the challenges and stresses of living in Level 3 and while it’s an improvement on Level 4, it is as they say, in reality “Level 4 – with takeaways”. So, from the Queenstown Lakes District, our very best wishes, our heartfelt thanks and we certainly hope that you will soon join us and the rest of Aotearoa in at least Level 2 in the short term.

I thought it might be nice to let you know just how important you are to the rest of the country. Quite a long time ago, I figured out that ‘JAFA’ actually means ‘Just Another Fabulous Aucklander’. We love to visit the City of Sails and we’re missing the maanakitanga always extended when we come up for work or play. In our beautiful district, Aucklanders account for greater than 50% of our kiwi visitors so while we feel your lockdown pain, we’re right beside you in also feeling the pain of not having you join us. You are, enormously important to us and our wineries and restaurateurs, our boat drivers and chopper pilots, our entertainers and nature guides and all of our warm and friendly locals look forward to welcoming you back as soon as you are able, and it’s safe for you to travel. Spring is looking great on our mountains, and our bars and cafes and out on our tracks and trails where chances to relax and rejuvenate after a pretty tough time are just waiting for your arrival. continued on page 2

We know we’ll eventually get to a point - when vaccination levels permit, that the international visitors return down under. Right now though, we’re just looking forward to being reunited when our mates from the north can join us. If you can, (and I know many won’t be able to for a while), maybe breathing in some fresh southern air on a fine and frosty morning or as Minister Hipkins put it, “spreading” your legs on a climb up one of our peaks might be just the antidote for life after lockdown. Whether it’s a yoga class or an exhilarating jet boat experience, being quite frank, the ability of many businesses from Wānaka to Glenorchy, to keep providing world class service and excitement, is dependent on having you join us. We’ve always appreciated that you love to visit us for your holidays or weekends away, so as fellow Kiwis, to the citizens of a wonderful city that many of us enjoy visiting too, please come back and see us as soon as you’re able. Organisers of the Queenstown Marathon are pushing ahead with preparations, despite needing Alert Level 1 for the event to go ahead.

Up to 12,000 runners are expected to take part on Saturday, November 20. Places for the half-marathon and the 10k have already sold out, while some remain for the full 42km distance marathon. Queenstown Marathon Race Director Nicole Fairweather says: “We’re positive that we will be in Level 1 and putting on the event as planned. “We’ve had great interest from NZ runners this year, with only limited entries in the marathon remaining, and we can’t wait to see them all line up in Queenstown this November.” Owned and delivered by The IRONMAN Group Oceania, the marathon usually provides the second-busiest weekend of the year for Queenstown businesses, behind New Year’s Eve, and injects more than $10 million of direct economic benefit into the local community. That’s likely to be less this year due to closed borders and potential domestic travel disruptions, but title sponsor New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown has reaffirmed its commitment to the event.
“This is an event that’s very close to our hearts and, even though it’s been a rollercoaster few weeks, we are confident that we will still be able to enjoy another great race come November,” NZSIR sponsorship manager Erika Harris says.
The high-end real estate agency sponsored the half-marathon for five years and last year became the top-tier sponsor, after Air New Zealand pulled out.
“We’re also introducing some exciting new facets to our involvement this year and we can’t wait to share these with the participants on the day.”

Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult has welcomed news up to 165,000 migrants will be able make New Zealand their permanent home. Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi announced last week a one-off new pathway to residency for 2021. Anyone who has lived in New Zealand for three or more years, or earns $27+ per hour, or works in a role on a scarce list, will be eligible. Boult says without temporary and essential skills migrant workers, Queenstown Lakes would not have been able to make the contribution to NZ’s economy that it has, because there are not enough Kiwis wanting to do the jobs available. “Seeing those folks who want to stay here, who have begun building a life here, struggle with the stress of uncertainty has been heartbreaking,” Boult says. “Business in our district already have enough of a challenge on their plate now, and I know that they will be relieved and delighted in the knowledge that they can secure these valuable staff permanently. “This will give them some confidence to keep pushing through these tough times with good people on board.” Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Ruth Stokes says the announcement comes after “months of campaigning and many discussions with businesses across the basin over immigration challenges”. That work was acknowledged by Minister Faafoi, who said it was discussions with business sector that led to the decision, rather than policy proposals by National or the Green Party. INZ normally processes 35,000 applications for residency per year, so this will be about five years’ worth, in one year. Faafoi says he’s confident beleaguered INZ will be able to meet the demand, as the system is changing from the time-consuming paper-based system to online. People waiting for residency visas will also be able to get temporary work visas extended.
The Tourism Industry Association estimates about 17,000 workers in the accommodation and food sectors plus other overseas workers currently employed across tourism and hospitality are likely to be eligible. It will also help 5,000 health and aged care workers, around 9,000 primary industry workers, more than 800 teachers, 15,000 construction workers and 12,000 manufacturing workers. But both Stokes and TIA boss Chris Roberts say a shortage of skilled and experienced workers remains a major concern for tourism employers. In May, 22% of TIA members reported they were not confident that they could meet their staffing needs when international travellers return and demand picks up. Businesses in Queenstown, Canterbury and Auckland in particular are finding it hard to fill vacancies. “The policy won’t necessarily ease demand for seasonal staff this summer, as it is not adding more people to the pool,” Roberts says. “However, employers will be delighted to know they can hang on to valued staff, and those employees will be excited that they and their families can have a long-term future in New Zealand.” Stokes says the Chamber will continue to “advocate for immigration policy that supports our region”. Applications for the 2021 Resident Visa will open in two phases; on 1 December 2021 and 1 March 2022.

Local GP clinics sold to national company by Paul Taylor

Wakatipu Medical Centre has been sold to Green Cross Health. The business, which has more than 7,500 patients enrolled at its clinics in Frankton and Lower Shotover, was owned by popular district councillor Dr Val Miller, along with Dr Bart Vangronsvelt and Practice Manager Phil Markham. Dr Miller says running an ever-growing business was becoming more “onerous and stressful”. “I had heard about Green Cross Health from a former university colleague who had sold them their practice, she says.
“It’s going to enable us to offer more services, more economically which will take a huge weight off my shoulders, and hopefully enable me to go for much longer as a GP.” Green Cross Health owns Life Pharmacy and Unichem Pharmacy brands, with 357 pharmacies, The Doctors medical centres, which has 50 practices and 317,000 patients, and Access Community Health, which conducted 3.6 million home visits annual. It has more than 4,300 employees. Wayne Woolrich, Green Cross Health medical general manager says: “Wakatipu Medical Centre is a great fit for us, and we are excited to welcome them to our network “They have a great team running the two Queenstown clinics. We’re looking forward to working with them and supporting the team to continue to provide high quality care for their community.”

Nigeria Twitter ban: Court to rule in January 2022 West Africa’s regional court says it will deliver its judgement in a suit challenging the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria on 20 January 2022. The Nigerian government suspended Twitter in June after the social media giant removed a post by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it violated its “abusive behaviour” policy. The government however said the suspension was to safeguard national security and unity. A prominent non-governmental organisation, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), challenged the decision in the court, which was set up by the regional body Ecowas and is based in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

A 715-km power line in Brazil’s Amazon region has received an environmental permit so that construction can move ahead, companies behind the project said last week, despite indigenous concerns over the damages it may cause. Speaking at an event, right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro said that it was a big day for the state of Roraima, which the power line will link to the rest of the Brazilian electric grid. Bolsonaro said construction would take about three years. The president has backed the construction of the line to ensure energy security for Roraima, which received power from Venezuela until political instability there cut off that arrangement and the state now relies on expensive thermoelectric power plants. Environmental concerns had long held up the project, the rights to which were auctioned off by the government in 2011. The line will connect the northern cities of Manaus and Boa Vista, with a 120-kilometer stretch cutting across the protected Waimiri-Atroari indigenous reserve. Reuters
YouTube blocks all anti-vaccine content YouTube will block all anti-vaccine content, moving beyond its ban on false information about the COVID vaccines to include content that contains misinformation about other approved vaccines, it said in a blog post last Wednesday. Examples of content that won’t be allowed on YouTube include claims that the flu vaccine causes infertility and that the MMR shot, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, can cause autism, according to YouTube’s policies. Medium density rental apartments as part of our shopping precinct by David Gibbs
Shopping centre owners worldwide have taken the opportunity to build apartments on their properties as a lucrative addition to their income. This started to accelerate once online shopping took off and the owners returns started to lag. It has accelerated again in the Covid era. At the time, I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to live next to or on top of the mall however that’s beyond the point, thousands have! And they love living where they shop. The idea has finally taken root in New Zealand with Kiwi Properties recently announcing a plan to build a 295-apartment complex at its Sylvia Park in Auckland, the country’s largest mall. Hundreds more are planned, along with potentially 245 apartments for long-term rental at its LynnMall location. This is the mall owner building the apartments for RENT not for sale!! Given Queenstown has a major accommodation issue, especially short of clean, modern apartments available the local workforce, this strikes me as an ideal opportunity for the Southern Lakes shopping Centre owners. Remarkables Park, Five Mile and Queenstown Central are located close to the major infrastructure links, with fast frequent cheap transport linking the rest of the region. Each has easy access to supermarkets, medical facilities, local pubs, restaurants as well as the Events Centre, and of course the airport. Apartments could be built primarily for residents and those on working visas. They are mostly working through the day, so not taking up parking, but would be there in the evening and at night to make the whole area viable and buzzing which would increase the viability of the businesses in those precincts. The business model is not that different than a shop rental, I assume. An initial investment up front and then ongoing rental repayments delivering a great long term reliable return. Maintenance could be handled by the same contractors and plenty of other synergies, I suspect. Plans to develop medium-density housing along Ladies Mile, on the other side of Shotover River, met with universal condemnation, as the infrastructure can’t support it. This concept would help fill the gap. It would also take the pressure off council to open up tracks of land along Ladies Mile, although the landowners will likely still push to build there. If you extend the thinking further, having 500 apartments in the area could be attractive to neighbourhood galleries, such as the really successful partnership Five Mile already has with QT Contemporary Gallery. Remarkables Park is introducing an upmarket cinema, making that even more viable with an audience of 500 residents living within a 2-minute walk. In other words, shopping centres would turn into vibrant neighbourhoods. Housing is already being built in the area, including some affordable housing and rental accommodation, but most of it is being done by developers and their model is to build, sell and move on. I believe that adding shopping centre landlords into the mix with built-for-rent apartments would support tenants, create employment and provide the workforce with somewhere to love. It would potentially attract new tenants and relieve pressure on development while adding vibrancy and viability to their precincts. And all linked to the existing public transport network, which could be improved with increased frequency and lengthened service times. Kiwi Properties has announced the biggest build-to-rent development in the country. This should be a major part of the solution to our housing shortage issues in the future. QLDC could clear away the red tape and encourage development by shopping centre developers with incentives that everybody would agree with.

#WellbeingForWhakatipu partnership launched Ziptrek Ecotours and Southern Wellbeing Trust have launched a programme called #WellbeingForWhakatipu which is a five-week initiative designed to help people find balance, build resilience and boost mental health and wellbeing. Each week, there will be a different focus with giveaways, collaborations and events promoted to encourage the community to come together and Connect, Be Active, Keep Learning, Take Notice and Give. Other like-minded Queenstown businesses like the Exchange Cafe and Kiwi Birdlife Park are also on board with activities including coffee catch up giveaways, treasure hunts on the Tiki Trail and guided meditation in Ziptrek treehouses. Ziptrek will take a lead role with weekly activations aligned with the Mental Health Foundation’s ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’. Mental health nurse and Wao speaker Sam Rodney-Hudson discusses the rise of eco-anxiety and what you can do to stay positive in the age of overwhelm. Very few argue the fact we are currently living in a climate crisis. The past 20 years have seen a steady increase in natural disasters. Climate change, deforestation, pollution, and species extinction is happening at an alarming rate and there doesn’t seem to be much mahi to slow it down. I made my first donation to Greenpeace when I was 10 and there was no way I was having children due to the state of the world I would leave them to inherit. Youth environmentalism is nothing new but it’s definitely more pressing, as I frequently tell my two children! Governments and leading organisations have failed to act for years, and humanity has rightly taken it upon itself to raise awareness. The plus side of raising awareness about anything that causes harm is the increased likelihood of change. Behaviour change, legislative change and hopefully paradigm shifts. But the negative side is the knowledge that things out of your control are happening every day and it’s not okay. Social media companies, charged with the task of growth, growth and more growth have found a way to capitalise on our attention by harnessing our outrage and ensuring we stay engaged and on their platforms. So it’s little wonder we are seeing the new, more widespread sense of despair and phenomena of eco-anxiety. Our anxiety is being exploited and sold, it’s a commodity, information overload is intentional. Therapists have reported a significant increase in clients sharing their disturbing concerns about the climate crisis and feeling overwhelmed with sadness and guilt about future decisions like buying a house, travelling and having children. Unsurprisingly, Greta Thunberg’s worldwide movement started with her experiencing a period of sadness and despair, leading her parents to support her to take action. We are all aware of the impact that initially small but ultimately massive global action has had in slowly but surely awakening many. As a mental health nurse, I see eco-anxiety as one of many things we worry about that we have little or no immediate control over. I tend to suggest a focus on transferable skills like resilience, emotional regulation, and taking small steps towards those bigger, seemingly insurmountable, goals. On the bright side, eco-anxiety is born from a genuine concern for the planet and our fellow humans, it shows an awesome level of empathy and kindness for our wider community, Papatūānuku, and the animal kingdom. It’s an opportunity to work together. Climate change really is something we see eye to eye on with our young people and teens. What next? RealNZ (formerly Wayfare) tourism CEO Stephen England-Hall has announced a bold vision for the tourism group under a new name, pledging to do ‘business for good’.
Former Department of Conservation Director-General Lou Sanson said he admired the company’s passion for conservation and its ambition to be a conservation business enabled by tourism.
“For us, business for good is about creating enduring value through conservation, that is enabled by tourism,” England-Hall told invited guests at an event at Manapouri, Fiordland, last night. “Conservation has always been part of what we do but we’re committing to making it our focus. It’s an ambitious vision, but the world has changed and so have our priorities. What’s more, we know that ‘business for good’ is good for our business,” says England-Hall.
“This is the first tourism company that’s dedicated a position to conservation in New Zealand and I applaud you for doing that,” said Sanson.
Previously the chief executive of TNZ (Tourism New Zealand), earlier this year, England-Hall joined the Wayfare group of tourism and ski companies, which included Real Journeys, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Go Orange and the International Antarctic Centre. Mr England-Hall told guests that it felt appropriate to share RealNZ’s vision for the future on a cruise across Lake Manapouri - where the tourism business was originally founded in 1954. “RealNZ continues to honour the legacy of founders Les and Olive Hutchins and their belief that tourism and conservation work hand in hand to sustain each other. “ The move had started with the recent appointment of New Zealand’s first tourism chief conservation officer – Paul Norris, to lead a dedicated sustainability team. The name change to RealNZ had been easy. “RealNZ tells a story of the things we care about – real people, real places, real experiences,” he said. “It represents a more simplified, integrated business than Wayfare had become – with a common purpose, to do real good.” England-Hall said like most New Zealand businesses, the group had needed to regroup and adapt to be successful under very different market conditions, after the market had gone through a fundamental change. “A period of acquisitions had led to complexity and inefficiency over the last few years, and with the market changing, left us with an unsustainable model. It also created a cluttered mix of brands and businesses, which were difficult for our visitors to find and navigate and for our teams to share their expertise and work across,” said England-Hall.
Discovery Expeditions (multi-day cruise) bookings made for the 1 October 2022 and beyond would contribute double the previous amount to conservation ($200 per person). Conservation Expeditions already contribute $500 each. To celebrate the start of RealNZ, a ‘RealNZ for good’ day would see each of RealNZ’s employees offer up their unique skills to assist New Zealand’s environment or community for at least one workday a year. “Conservation work already takes place during the course of some of our team’s workdays, but this would see at least 1000 additional days donated for conservation or community project work,” said England-Hall. England-Hall said the change to RealNZ is largely a digital transformation and that rebranding would only be done when vessels and coaches are due for repainting. Whilst Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone and the International Antarctic Centre maintain their individual brands as RealNZ experiences, there would be considerable efficiencies in bringing all the tourism brands under one umbrella. “This is a brand built on: Real people, Real places, Real Experiences – RealNZ,” he said. Ngāi Tahu kaumatua Michael Skerrett welcomed everyone with a karakia.. Guests, including several of the Hutchins family, Ngāi Tahu representatives from the Rūnaka and leaders of the tourism industry were each presented with a native tree to plant at home – or to leave to donate to the RealNZ Walter Peak Land Restoration Project.

Arts+Culture Pursing a life of crime writing By Bethany Rogers
Award-winning writer Paul Cleave is on his way to Queenstown to share a few tips on a life of crime writing. Hosted by the Queenstown Writers Festival, the event is one of two seminars aimed at budding and experienced writers who want to know more about the writing industry. Paul’s publisher Kevin Chapman will run the other session on how to get published. Based in Christchurch, Paul’s thriller and crime novels are well-known around the world. But he says he never intended a life of crime writing: “Writing was always what I wanted to do. I never wanted to be Batman or Spiderman or anything like that, I wanted to be a writer. Not that I ever thought I would be. When you’re at school and you’re asked what you want to do when you leave, you’re not going to say: I want to be a novelist. That’s not realistic. No English teacher is going to encourage that. “I was 19 when I first started trying to be a writer. I thought it would be a cool way to travel and meet people. “As far as crime writing goes, I started writing crime because I couldn’t write horror. I really wanted to be a horror writer, but I wasn’t very good at it.” Paul converted to crime writing after wandering into a Whitcoulls book shop in his early 20s and finding Obsession by John Douglas. Douglas is a legendary former criminal profiler for the FBI and an expert in unravelling the motives and mindsets of criminals. Netflix’s Mindhunter is based on Douglas, as is the Jack Crawford character in The Silence of the Lambs. “As I read this book about real-life serial killers (the data in this book is still used to help police create criminal profiles), I thought: holy shit. This is horror. This is real-life horror. And that’s when I decided to make that switch. I decided to scare people with real-life human beings and real-life situations rather than monsters. “I think if I hadn’t walked into that shop and picked up that book, I might never have switched to writing crime. Because what I took from that book were the elements of a serial killer, and then I created my own serial killer.” Many of the elements of Paul’s character Joe (a janitor-turned-serial-killer) were inspired by the data and information found in Douglas’ book. “Douglas’ books are very, very difficult to read. Real children, real people have been murdered, so it’s a heart-breaking experience to read. I don’t think I could read them again, but I took a lot out of them in terms of research that I still use.” Paul admits that he has a strong imagination. Research, particularly on the internet, can be uncomfortable. “Once I see something, it’s locked in my mind forever. So I’m very careful. When I do my research I particularly don’t want to see the images that go with it. […] I will say that I’m lucky; I’m 90% blind in one eye so when I’m researching stuff and there are images, I’ll cover my good eye and look at it with my bad eye so I don’t really have to see it and I can navigate beyond them!”
Crime writing is an imaginative and fictional process, reminds Paul. When a writer creates astonishingly three-dimensional serial killers, some readers mistakenly begin to blur the realistic with the real. Paul explores this topic in his latest book, The Quiet People. In it, a husbandand-wife crime writing duo ends up in the police spotlight when their 7-yearold son goes missing. Previous jokes about knowing enough to commit the perfect crime don’t help the couple’s case. “It’s tough when you see an article that says you’re fascinated by crime or something like that. A radio station once asked if I would comment on a crime that had happened here in Christchurch as the ‘resident crime writer’. I’m uncomfortable about that. I don’t want to be a poster boy for real crime in Christchurch. “[…] I know a lot of really nice crime writers. We’re all really nice people. You’re not thinking about dark things unless you’re thinking about the book. We’re all pretty sane. But I decided in my new book that it would be cool for the characters to have some of these experiences too – but to crank the tension up.” Solving the Mystery of Crime Writing with Paul Cleave is on 31st October at Sherwood Queenstown. Airport boss earns the big bucks, relatively by Paul Taylor
New Queenstown Airport boss Glen Sowry has a base salary of $490,000 per year, with potential to earn another $80k in bonuses. That would take him to the same salary as his predecessor Colin Keel, who earned around $570k before he left in June, after five years in the hot seat.
He’ll also be evaluated on the people and business leadership of QAC, and ensuring continued stable financial performance through the pandemic, safeguarding “its core capacity to operate vital and lifeline airport infrastructure for the district and to support the recovery of the district”. And he must maintain a “world class operational performance and health and safety standards”.
Sowry is also in line for an extra $100k bonus if he remains in the job until 2025.
The QAC Board conducted an “extensive global search to find a new CEO” and says it set a salary package “to attract the right candidates to the position”.
Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) revealed its chief executive’s salary under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (the Act), deeming it in the public interest.
Christchurch Airport boss Malcolm Johns, who is planning a rival airport in Tarras, received $896k in the last financial year, which includes $180k in bonuses.
The airport’s proposed expansion, and QAC’s now-scrapped deal with its major shareholder Queenstown Lakes District Council to run Wanaka Airport, have been hugely controversial topics for the Queenstown Lakes community, making Keel an unpopular figure in many quarters. It has caused months of wrangling at QLDC over the airport’s ‘Statement of Intent’, which is effectively its annual plan, and how much control QLDC should exert over the QAC board and the direction of the business. The $80k a year bonus is dependent of Sowry achieving the Statement of Intent objectives and targets including completing a strategic business plan with a 10-year outlook. It also requires “open engagement with the communities we serve, our shareholders and with our customer and supplier base”.
Sowry was previously CEO of Metlifecare and prior to that CEO of Housing New Zealand (now Kainga Ora).
Do we need a fifth airport? Christchurch Airport can built a 2.2km-long runway on $45 million of farmland it bought in Tarras, big enough to land long-haul jets. But QAC boss Glen Sowry says the need for a fifth airport serving the region is yet to be established, with Australians enjoying being able to fly direct into the resort. And Sowry says QAC will be “particularly focused on the impact of any potential new flight paths to current airspace use, including the existing use rights of the long-established general aviation community and commercial operators in the area”. Christchurch Airport’s preliminary aeronautical assessment identifies two potential runway alignments – one aligning to the Lindis Valley and Lake Dunstan, the other to the Hawea Valley and Lake Dunstan.

Libraries worth visiting
even if reading isn’t your passion Public libraries exist in many countries across the world and are often considered an essential part of having an educated and literate population. Many cities have iconic libraries that are part of the reason to visit the city even if you aren’t a book person, just being there is extraordinary. Here are four that will be worth adding to your travel itinerary once we can rejoin the world of overseas travel.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina Library, Egypt Located near the site of the ancient library of Alexandria in Egypt, the modern version is an eleven-story, cylindrical-shaped building. A re-imagining of Alexandria’s ancient Great Library, this gorgeously designed cultural center contains a host of museums as well as one of the modern world’s most ambitious libraries. Founded in 2002, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is the spiritual successor to the Great Library of ancient times. Its architecture - a giant sun disk - presides over the waterfront Corniche. The Bibliotheca’s outer facade is a curved wall of grey stone with characters in a hundred and fifty different scripts from around the globe carved into it. In the afternoon sun, the light gleams over the stone and frames it against the chaos of the city surroundings. The facade sits atop a half-sunken glass disc meant to resemble the sun rising from the Mediterranean Sea, a boulevard away. The main attraction inside, is the is the huge and stunning reading room which can hold eight million volumes. Below the main library, visitors can explore a range of beautifully curated exhibitions. The Manuscript Museum with its magnificent collection of ancient texts and scrolls and the Antiquities Museum with its Graeco-Roman antiquities and statuary found during underwater exploration in the harbor are the two prime attractions. But there are also rotating art exhibitions, a permanent Egyptian folk art collection, and a Science Museum and Planetarium.
Green Square Library and Plaza, Sydney Green Square is a massive redevelopment that kicked off in 2006, transforming the industrial edge of Sydney’s inner south into a vibrant global village, forming a hub of residential, retail, commercial, and cultural amenities including the library. Awarded the 2018 Architectural Review Library Award, Sydney’s part-underground Green Square Library and Plaza has a circular sunken garden at its heart. Green Square Library is an open, flexible and inclusive space which pushes the boundaries of public architecture. The library functions as an ‘urban living room’ for a healthy, growing community. The outdoor space includes an area for reading, and a “story tree” for children’s story time. A series of circular skylights bring natural light to the subterranean library. Highlights inside include circular seats built into library shelves and a baby grand piano room.
New York Public Library, USA Two marble lions mark the entrance to one of New York’s iconic buildings and one of the few in the city, that you can wander around. This Beaux Arts masterpiece, is a National Historic Landmark that contains more than six million books. When you enter the library you will be in this stunning white marble entryway named for the wealthy and prominent Astor family. Once the richest man in the world, John Jacob Astor, passed away in 1848 and dedicated a huge sum of money to establish the first public library in NYC. In 1985 the Astor Library merged with the New York Public Library.
It is almost as long as two city blocks.It contains 42 oak tables that can accommodate over 600 readers and 40,000 reference books line its walls. Its gilded ceiling is 52 feet high! Besides being beautiful, lush, and vast, its also strangely quiet with people studying, gawking or just quietly reading making it a destination for any researchers and academics. McGraw Rotunda

With its dark walnut paneling and a vaulted ceiling, the Rotunda is a perfect location for enormous murals on its walls and ceiling. The murals are named “The Story of the Recorded Word,” and do indeed tell this story.
The reading room is one of the largest interior spaces in the whole city.
The most well-known mural depicts Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press, holding a page from his famous Bible, which was the first book to be printed using the printing press. In the Rotunda, you can see a Gutenberg Bible, one of only 49 existing copies in the world!
Biblioteca Sur, Lima, Peru Biblioteca Sur, is a giant monument to books, literally. Gonzalez Moix Arquitecture’s Biblioteca Sur looks like books piled on a bookshelf. According to the architects, when two of the exposed concrete columns that look like books tilt, the order breaks, therefore, signalling the entrance to the library. Keeping with that analogy, the bookends are two wood veneer boxes on either side of the building. It makes for a grand design, and is especially picturesque against the park that neighbours it, and among the contrasting residential architecture that surrounds the library. Biblioteca Sur was completed in 2017, after an eight-year design and construction process. It is located in a residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of the country’s capital Lima.

By Sharon Hargest Operation Christmas Child is such a simple concept - filling a shoebox with gifts to help a child in poverty - but it can be life-changing for the recipients and their families. It is run all over the world by Samaritan’s Purse, who do a lot of other mission work also. Boxes from Australia and New Zealand are regularly sent to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Last year all boxes from NZ went to Fiji. I became involved in Queenstown by going to the meetings, hearing all about it, and filling my own box. But one year I was the only person who turned up to the meeting, and was handed all the materials by the couple who were stepping down from running it. That was about 10 years ago, and I have enjoyed doing it ever since. Sometimes the local schools have participated. Two or three times the Middle School at QPS made it a project, with great results, filling about 100 boxes. The kids were very enthusiastic, and really enjoyed putting the boxes together for children who have probably never received a gift. If you, or your group, club or business would like to take part this year, preprinted shoeboxes and labels are available from The Salvation Army Family Store in Gorge Road, The Orphan’s Aid shop near BP at Frankton, or give myself a call. Regular shoeboxes can be used, as long as they aren’t bigger than A4 size. Choose whether it’s for a boy or girl, what age (2-4, 5-9, 10 -14), and fill it with gifts that will last. Things for school, hygiene, to wear, toys and a letter or photo of yourself. If you can please also add $10 for the shipping. If you pay for this online, it’s then possible to ‘follow your box’, and see what country it goes to.

Queenstown’s trail repairs have been boosted by a $200k windfall from Central Government.

Tourism Minister Stuart Nash announced the funding as part of a $649k package to repair cycle and walking trails on four of New Zealand’s Great rides, damaged by extreme winter weather in June and July. In Queenstown, the money will be used to repair parts of the Twin River Trails, including constructing a 40-metre long timber retaining wall, a gabion wall and handrail, and also rebuilding a a stacked stone wall and other repairs along the Kelvin Peninsula Trail. Other repairs include Aotearoa’s most northern Great Ride, Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail, as well as the Hauraki Rail Trail and the Tasman Great Taste Trail. Sections of the trails were closed due to wash-outs, slips, slumping, and damage to surfaces and drainage after torrential rain. “The cycle trails are valuable components of our national tourism infrastructure,” Nash says. “They are incredibly popular with both local users and domestic tourists and we want them restored and made safe before cyclists return in greater numbers during summertime. “Cycle tourism plays a vital role to support local jobs and businesses, especially for destinations off the beaten track which experienced a visitor boom prior to the latest outbreak of the New South Wales Delta variant.” Recent research demonstrated more Kiwis are choosing to explore by cycling or walking New Zealand’s 22 Great Ride trails. Over the 12 months from 1 March, 2019, to 28 February, 2020, there were 1,985,600 trips on the New Zealand Cycle Trail Great Rides, compared to 1,300,000 estimated in 2015. Automated counters, which can distinguish between cyclists and walkers, were used. Queenstown trails ranked second most used in the country Queenstown, with 370,972 trips, including 239,935 walkers and 131,037 cyclists.

THE TEACHERS PET The Teacher’s Pet, is a really popular true crime podcast published by The Australian newspaper in 2018, and has made legal history in Australia after being cited by a judge as part of the reason that a murder trial could not take place last year. The sixteen episode series is hosted by investigative journalist Hedley Thomas and re-examined what was then a cold case: the unsolved disappearance of Lynette Dawson in 1982. Since the podcast’s release, Lynette’s husband Chris Dawson has been charged with her murder and pleaded not guilty in April 2019. Throughout the original 14-part series, Thomas digs deep into the 36-yearold unsolved cold case, uncovering new pieces of evidence which have changed the direction of the case. There have been four update episodes since the original podcast’s conclusion back in August 2018, and the story is far from over. At the end of September 2020, it was revealed that his defence team had attempted to secure a permanent stay in the trial, citing — among other factors — the podcast and the resulting “media storm.” Dawson’s lawyers argued that the defendant would face “considerable forensic disadvantages in advancing his defence,” with the podcast having been downloaded 28 million times. The trial is slated to take place in May 2021.

September Summary The accommodation sector recorded just 19 roles in September down another 60% on August which in itself was down 58% from July. The accommodation sector was just getting back on its feet after a horrific last 2 years which has seen the mothballing of many room and in some cases entire hotels. With Holiday Inn Remarkables Park hiring through this period for a January opening and the new Sudina Hotel, Five Mile opening just after in February competition for staff is going to get particularly fierce. Food and Beverage, retail, basically all categories except construction showed similar drops in job availability. Construction, was the only sector to grow [up 6%] as demand for all roles in the construction industry continued to outstrip supply.
Traditionally September is one of the busiest months in the local job market as business gears up for the all important summer period. This year however September has recorded the lowest number of jobs advertised since the start of the year. The number of jobs advertised [just 207] was 40% below even 2020, when the market was showing early optimism and enough confidence for employers to start recruiting. In the years prior September would record just under 1,000 vacant roles.
