Let’s tackle this head-on

As hospital passes go, it looks as if Queenstown dodged a big one last year when Government decided against creating a ‘bespoke sports isolation hotel’ here. Sounds cool doesn’t it, like somewhere Ivan Drago would train. You’d expect to find rows of super-fit people doing synchronized jumping jacks in the grounds, drinking green smoothies and foam-rolling themselves and each other. When the idea was proposed, it was backed by mayor Jim Boult. You can see the potential benefits for Queenstown. World class athletes and teams staying in town, hopefully sticking around to train and play a few warm up matches after they’ve been given the all-clear, attracting domestic visitors, spending money in bars and restaurants, lots of social media posts, not to mention guaranteed, captive guests and income for at least two major hotels, along with security firms etc. etc. But, in reality, with the rise of the Delta variant, the risk to the community would have been too great. While there have been no community cases spreading from Christchurch’s MIQ at Chateau on the Park, where sports teams have been accommodated instead, there have been positive cases, and both the Pakistan and West Indies men’s cricket teams broke managed isolation rules during their stays. The whole MIQ situation is so contentious too, the idea that well-paid sport stars get special Queenstown treatment, while the rest of returning Kiwis battle for a spot in cramped city centre rooms, would have likely brought us more social media hate.

All that aside, the reasons why MIQ Sport QT did not go ahead should concern everyone in Queenstown. As RNZ revealed, we managed to avoid the hospital pass because... we don’t have a big enough hospital. MBIE ofﬁcials who visited in August 2020, found our health resources were too limited. There’s no tertiary health facility and health staff would need to be brought from Dunedin and Invercargill. Neither do we have enough general workers or security guards to staff a facility, which would have cost $776,000 to set up and $4.2m-a-month to run.

So what happens then as we move to the next phase of reopening? Pre-departure tests, self-isolation and MIQ for those from risky countries is all well and good, but you’ve got to think at some point in 2022 Delta will reach Queenstown. Vaccination massively reduces the risk of hospitalisation, but it doesn’t remove it completely. And what about the immunocompromised and children who, at this point, can’t take the vaccine? The SDHB has 47 ventilators - 38 in Dunedin, 8 in Southland and one in an aircraft. Are we going to see an endless stream of choppers transferring patients down there?

Tree chop stopped by Payl Taylor

Five Eucalyptus trees in central Queenstown have been given a stay of execution. The Brecon Street trees were due to be chopped down on Monday morning to make way for a new footpath, part of the $60 million streetscape project. But there’s been a community campaign to save them, led by local arborist Jimmy Carling, whose petition has attracted more than 800 signatures. In a statement on Friday, Queenstown Lakes District Council has confirmed the removal of the trees has temporarily put on hold as native birds have been spotted in their branches. “This will allow for an ecological report on the trees to be prepared and the possibility of nesting native birds to be investigated,” the statement said. Carling says he observed a tui and fantails in the trees in recent days. He took a video and passed it on to Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult, but believes the council was already aware. It’s illegal to disturb nesting natives. “It would be good if while there is this pause, we use that time to also look at engineering solutions that could be put in place to keep the trees,” Carling says. “My understanding is there will be a boardwalk going in over the redwood further down, which is being retained.” The Eucalyptus trees, while exotics, are “urban gold from an arboricultural point of view”, Carling says, because they’re not an invasive species, grow well in the climate, structurally are in good condition, are mature, and are hardwoods, “so doing environmental heavy lifting in terms of carbon sequestration”. “And with urban intensification, they are a great visual mitigation. They would provide a great screen to the new hotel in Brecon St. Look at how the redwood has been incorporated into the design of the Ramada [Stanley St].” Several developments are underway for Brecon Street, which leads up to the Skyline Gondola, including a bowling alley with shops, a hotel and Skyline’s new base building and carpark. Carling says he’s surprised by the number of people who signed the petition, as most locals have now migrated to the suburbs. But all the local arborists had refused to price the job, on moral grounds, and he believes that struck a cord.

Street upgrades on track Queenstown’s streetscape upgrades will be managed to allow some respite for locals and businesses over the busy Christmas period. The works span five key streets and, along with work to install a sewer pipe underneath the town centre, are causing major disruption. Council infrastructure boss Peter Hansby says contractors are now working extra hours and weekends to hit milestones over the next three months. Lower Beach Street is on track to be paved in time for the summer period, while Upper Beach Street services will be complete and a concrete surface poured ahead of Christmas, ready for paving early in 2022. Construction will pause on both streets from 17 December to January 24, with fences removed and streets made safe, clean and attractive, Hansby says. And Park Street, near Queenstown Gardens, is on track to be completed ahead of Christmas. Work to upgrade Brecon Street began last week and will also be paused over the same period.

Windfall for environmental groups by Payl Taylor

Queenstown environmental projects have landed a massive $7.8 million windfall from Government, creating more than 60 jobs. Mana Tāhuna, Southern Lakes Sanctuary Trust and the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust are all being supported by the Department of Conservation’s Mahi mō te Taiao/Jobs for Nature initiative. Southern Lakes Sanctuary Trust (SLST) will receive $3 million over the next three years for a new predator control project for the catchments of Lakes Wānaka and Whakatipu. The project will initially support the work of 85 predator control projects, under the SLST umbrella, across the entire Queenstown Lakes District. It will cover 183,000ha, where there are 23 threatened and at-risk wildlife species. The goal is to expand to eventually eradicate predators from the whole region. Trust chair, Greg Lind, says: “The Southern Lakes Sanctuary will work with our iwi partners Ngai Tahu, DOC, QLDC and local groups to ensure we have thriving ecosystems and abundant wildlife in our region that is enjoyed by people who treasure this whenua puia.” More than 38 full time jobs will be created by the project, with project partner GSD Workforce Limited delivering these jobs for the local community. Local iwi charity Mana Tāhuna will receive $4.45m over the next three years for the The Rehabilitation of Te Wai Whakaata – The Lake Hayes Catchment. The aim is to make Te Wai Whakaata (Lake Hayes) swimmable again. The project will work with other community groups to undertake native planting, wetland restoration, possum, rat and stoat control and installation of sediment traps. It is estimated that up to 25 people

will be employed over three years. And the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust will receive $416,000 for additional stoat, possum and feral cat control in the Routeburn, Dart and nearby valleys, employing six people. Nine projects across the South Island were confirmed for funding by Conservation Minister Kiri Allan. “Importantly each of these initiatives also support communities hit hard by the tourism downturn to continue the valuable work they are doing in caring for their own backyards, work that work that we and future generations, will benefit from.”

Arts+Culture The colour of the sky with illustrator and author Laura Shallcrass By Bethany Rogers

Local illustrator and author Laura Shallcrass has just received sample copies of her latest book from the printers. It’s an exciting time for the author, who has already had great success with her first book for children, Hare and Ruru. The book is about Hare, who’s suffering from a mental malady Hare describes as ‘noise’. His symptoms include runaway thoughts, loud feelings and general anxiety. Luckily, Hare’s friend Ruru has a solution. It’s published by Beatnik and there’s an English language and a te reo Maori edition. The book won the Russell Clark Award for Illustration at the 2021 NZ Book Awards. Laura’s next book, What Colour is the Sky? will be released in November. But Laura very nearly didn’t become an illustrator. When she was younger, Laura didn’t think of herself as an artist. She enjoyed design in high school so chose to study it at university. There, she started exploring different technical areas of design, like computer graphics. During her studies, Laura saw an art exhibition that inspired her to delve into the wonderful world of illustration. “Every year, Massey University does an exhibition of the final year students’ work. I went along to that and I realised that what I was drawn to most was the illustration work. “From then on, I decided I was going to add illustration into my degree. It was a little bit last-minute. I was halfway through a term studying computer graphics when I switched to illustration. And I loved it. I knew as soon as I started that this was what I wanted to do.” Laura’s had a portfolio career, oscillating between creative pursuits. She’s held art exhibitions and created designs for many well-known brands. “I’ve switched from full-time artist to full-time illustrator and back again about five times over. Just when I think I’ve found my trajectory, it changes again. But I love that. I’d get bored if I didn’t change. I love art and I love illustration and though they are different, they complement each other.”

Hare and Ruru

Laura came up with the idea for Hare and Ruru ten years ago, around the time her eldest son was born. It was her first foray into the world of storybook writing and publishing. “A lot of that time was spent turning ideas over in my head. Then there were about two years of really solid production stuff – churning out illustrations and finding the right style.” In the end, Laura found the perfect illustration style through using a mix of design disciplines gleaned from her creative and commercial work.

“I went through a couple of different styles before I found the one that really stuck. […] I’d done some commercial illustrations for the local craft beer brand Cargo Brewery in this style and I thought it would work for the book. “The illustrations are a little bit like Japanese woodcut in style, but the way they are produced is quite different. The flat colour is a Vector image. Then I do an outline using a pencil effect on top. So it’s a combination of Vector and Bitmap, which I really enjoy using and I find I’m easily able to communicate through that. “I like flat colour and very simple colour palettes. Too much colour freaks my eyes out, I’m drawn to muted palettes. The beautiful pencil lines add texture. I’ve managed to bring together two different parts of my art practice in the one image.” Laura pitched to publishers and eventually found Beatnik, a New Zealand publisher known for its immaculately produced books. “I really click with the people at Beatnik, there’s never a drama and I feel we’re on the same page.”

What colour is the sky? Beatnik is also the publisher of Laura’s upcoming book, What colour is the sky? In it, Hare and Pihoihoi are enjoying a beautiful dawn breaking over the meadow when Pihoihoi wonders aloud, ‘What colour is the sky?’. Hare thinks it’s blue but soon discovers that the other creatures have different ideas. “It’s about perspectives and respecting other people’s opinions. It’s about realising that everybody has reasons to believe in different things and that’s okay.

My mum is American and I have lots of family in the States and I was appalled by the Trump presidency. And how divided everything has become. I’m a pretty staunch lefty, but I don’t write off the opinions and thoughts of people who think differently to me. And I feel like that is something we have lost a little bit… I think a bit more bridge-building is required and that’s where I was going with this.

Dear Mr Brightside, I don’t want to complain or cause fuss but a 49% increase in rate demands by ORC is horrendous?! How did it get to be so much? Do they not know it’s a tough financial time for everyone? Ahem Covid!

There are two things that are certain in life: Death and Taxes. The Otago Region Council rate increase seems like it’s trying to kill you with the tax increase. Unfortunately it’s applicable for everyone who own property. Whether the property is occupied or not, rates need to be paid. That beautiful abode in a nice suburban area is a catch 22 unfortunately. Yes, the resale value will be handsome when you sell, but what you don’t account for is the valuation of the property will affect your bill from council. While you probably don’t live in a Gucci house, you’ve been pinged to pay Gucci sized rates.

You’re up to your eyeballs, probably, paying off your mortgage because of the property prices and now working your butt off to bring the debt down. Councils know this but they still want to skim a bit more from your wages. I feel for your poor deflated piggy bank. Sob. Do you need a drink?

Welcome to homeownership and adulthood! I’m sorry to inform you that rates are part of the lousy gift pack. But you ask why the rate increase? This stems from the fact that keeping Queenstown as a functioning busy boutique township costs a lot, and this is hitting home as the form of a bill. Our regional council has a responsibility to take care of public amenities and this requires the hireage of staff to keep up with demand. Water, transport and pest control are all part of the ORC targeted rates in this latest bill. We have a $2 bus service and part of your rate is paying the running costs. I’ve used other bus networks in New Zealand and believe me this one is pretty darn good. To have buses that run to 12pm is unheard of. If we don’t start using it or we lose it. You’re paying for it so why not give it a go. Pets control particularly the bloody rabbits need attention - like death attention. Landowners have been left to their own devices to sort our rabbit problem. The slug gun and car aren’t making an impact on the rising rabbit population. It’s now a biosecurity problem and ORC have stepped in to co-ordinate the culling plan. More cost.. The biggest cost gouge however is is water. Addressing our water health and trying to reverse the deterioration of it comes at a price. Central government is advocating for water reform throughout NZ and is feeling a little sheepish after the 100% Pure campaign that has been plunged down the toilet. Water policies have added 35% to ORC’s general rates before other projects can even be looked at. I can foresee it, there will be water wars to come. There’s been much heat about ORC using their assets to offset the massive ratepayer bill but this will only shift the bill to the next generation or drain more out of the property owners cos lets be honest, next gen are looking unlikely to purchase their own home. This is the true cost of living in the most beautiful area of the world! Now you have to stop and think that preceding ratepayers got it far too cheap.

Gardening Tips TASTY TOMATOES You know when the weather starts to warm up, it’s time to plant your tomatoes! Tomatoes is a must-have in any garden, the feeling of satisfaction as you pick a fresh tomato off your vine is... Plus homemade pasta sauce? Yes, please! Traditionally Labour weekend is the time to plant your tomatoes but anytime from Sept – Early Jan is ok. Tomatoes thrive in a sunny, sheltered spot, protected from strong winds. It’s important to switch up your planting positions and plant your tomatoes in a different spot from the previous season. This just helps prevent any disease. Switch it up by planting tomatoes in pots or if you’re low on space you can plant cherry and dwarf tomato varieties in hanging baskets, add some marigolds and herbs to your hanging baskets to attract beneficial insects as well as to ward off any unwanted pests. Tomatoes aren’t a fan of soil with a low PH, if it’s been raining cats and dogs in your area, we recommend adding a bit of lime to your soil prior to planting. Lime provides a great source of calcium which encourages healthier and larger fruit and helps prevent blossom rot. Calcium also helps improve the soil structure which encourages earthworm activity. Nurseries stock a variety of tomatoes. If you are planting tomatoes for bottling then heirloom mix, brandy wine, black Krim, money maker and beefsteak are great options. If you’re after smaller varieties that don’t require a lot of room and are great for salads and picking straight off the vine then our gold nugget, black and red cherry and acid-free tomatoes will do the trick. Grab Awapuni seedlings from your local supermarket, The Warehouse or Bunnings store. Once you’ve decided on your varieties and your soil prep is complete, dig a hole approximately 5cm deep and space your tomato seedlings about 40-50 cm apart If you’re companion planting, we recommend planting your tomatoes with basil, marigolds, onions, cosmos, cucumber, lettuce, sage and mint. Avoid planting with brassicas and corn. Corn is

likely to attract fruit worm. We also don’t recommend planting your tomatoes with potatoes as potatoes require quite a bit of nutrients which will reduce the growth of your tomatoes, they’re also likely to cause blight. Once planted, spray your tomatoes with liquid copper to prevent fungal disease and add some Tui Organic Seaweed to the surrounding soil to encourage larger and juicy fruit. When it comes to watering, avoid overhead hosing as it could leave your plants more susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew, rust, and blight. You can retain moisture by adding a layer of newspaper around your plants and then cover your newspaper with pea straw or soil. We hope you have a successful tomato growing season! Happy Gardening!

Luckily, there’s no need for unlocking—the Camera app is just a swipe away on the lock screen. Here’s how to get to it as fast as possible. The Secret Swipe To open the iPhone camera app as quickly as possible, you’ll first need to wake your iPhone. Depending on your settings, you can do that either by physically lifting the phone, tapping the screen, or pressing the top or side button. When you see the lock screen, place your finger on any part of the screen that doesn’t contain a notification and swipe to the left. If you swipe far enough, the Camera app will open instantly. Once the Camera app opens, you can use it as you normally would to take pictures or videos quickly: Press the circular shutter or record button on the touch screen. Or you can trigger the capture process by pressing the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons on the side of your phone. When you’re done taking photos or videos, lock your screen again by pressing the top or side button, and your iPhone’s screen will turn off. Any photos you took will be stored automatically in your Photos library.

It’s one step closer now. The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering research into developing vehicle-side and in-road charging technology needed to meet this challenge, has been awarded $13.5m by the Ministry of Business and Innovation Endeavour Fund. Wireless charging on the move will mean less downtime for vehicles and smaller battery packs. It’s what fleet owners need if they have any chance of meeting Climate Change Commission advice to switch to electricity by 2035 says Professor Grant Covic, from the Department of Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering. The funding will enable researchers to continue their work, which started three decades ago and which is internationally recognised. New Zealand is a leader in the field of wireless charging technology which started with pioneering work at the Faculty in the late 1980s when the university developed a high efficiency resonant converter that enabled a high frequency current to be produced in a track, along with technology that enabled efficient power regulation – the basis for wireless power transfer. Research on wirelessly charging of electric vehicles began five years later and resulted in the world’s first wirelessly powered EV in commercial application, an electric bus system used at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua. “We have always punched above our weight with this technology,” says Professor Covic. “But now our work is urgent – we need clean transport. “This research will help to create the safe, clean future that we want our children to inherit – and economic opportunities for New Zealand firms to commercialise the technology.”

Every now and then, a developer comes out with a game so good that it gains critical acclaim by the industry and shapes it moving forward. Remember Flappy Bird? It wasn’t a complicated game at all (from a technical point of view) but it gained so much traction in the industry that even the developer could not handle it and pulled it from the stores.

Radiolab is one of the most beloved podcasts and public radio shows in the world. The show is known for its deep-dive journalism and innovative sound design. Created in 2002 by host Jad Abumrad (left), the program began as an exploration of scientific inquiry. Over the years it has evolved to become a platform for long-form journalism and storytelling.

The same can be said about Monument Valley, by ustwo games, a puzzle game that combines so many good elements on different levels that you are left wondering why the developer is asking just $3.99 for it. It is easily the best puzzle game in the Play Store, and probably one of the best mobile games ever created.

Radiolab is now co-hosted by Lulu Miller and Latif Nasser (right). As a podcast it’s found an international audience of science lovers and newcomers. I’m no science geek but I really enjoy the “highly produced meditations on weird, obscure subjects involving chemistry and biology”. They discuss difficult subjects in an easy, unthreatening way.

As you go through each stage, they get bigger and more complicated, with Ida “learning” new stuff (such as walking sideways) and new ways of interacting with the environment. Elements such as the crow people are introduced in later levels to spice things up.

It’s a source of surprise that I find I’m thoroughly glued to stories about the elasticity of time or the background story to the Five Stages of Grief which was a show a couple of weeks back but that’s part of Radiolab’s charm.

BAILEY SARIAN Bailey started her career through YouTube. She launched her YouTube channel on 23 January 2013 & uploaded her first YouTube video on 13 September 2013. She began uploading makeup tutorials & sometimes vlogs as well. However, she failed to gain many subscribers as her videos hardly had views. But, she didn’t stop uploading videos & finally, her channel started to take off in 2019. She started a series known as “Murder, Mystery, and Makeup” on 15 January 2019. This is her most popular series on YouTube & one of the major reasons for her channel’s immense growth. So far, she has uploaded 90 episodes of these series. Each series averages around 2 million views. Over the period, she gained more than 5 million subscribers with 578 million total channel views. “I never expected Murder Mystery & Makeup to be so big. I always think of what can come from this– I just hit 5 million subscribers so I think I could do some good with it. I want to do more unsolved mysteries. From her desk at home, Arna Craig can see the mountains. It’s an idyllic view, one the co-founder of Wao Charitable Trust does not take lightly. “Right now, the planet is trying to kick us off. There’s really no better way to put it. But every day as I glance outside I am reminded of why I put so much effort into Wao, despite the hustle of my own life,” Craig said. “Our lakes, mountains, our forests and our oceans need us to fight for them. And as a person who lives for the outdoors I feel an inherent responsibility to be a voice of change. All it takes is one pebble to start a ripple, and our aim with Wao is to turn those ripples into waves,” Craig added. The trust, which takes its name from the Māori word for Forest, is a true collective. It was founded in 2018 by a group of passionate individuals focussed on mainstreaming sustainability and fostering diversity. Simply put, Wao aims to educate, inspire and enable communities to move towards a regenerative future. Although the non-profit has successfully implemented several ecoinitiatives, its largest to date is the Wao Summit, an annual six-day event that offers a 360 degree approach to creating and fostering tangible, social and environmental change at every level. Monique Kelly, co-founder of Wao says there has never been a better time to speak out. “Thanks to the likes of Greta Thurnburg and David Attenborough who sounded alarm bells, people are engaged in climate action. A global pandemic and all the time in the world to watch poignant Netflix documentaries has given us an audience that is suddenly waking up to the issues we face,” Kelly said. “And while words like organic, sustainable and carbon-neutral were once reserved for the ethical elite, we have seen a significant behavioral shift at grassroots level. People are beginning to understand why they need to reduce emissions and give back to the planet more than we take. For the first time, we have businesses choosing to go green because it’s the right thing, not a political or marketing move,” Kelly continued. The Wao summit, now in its fourth year, features over 40 different kōrero, workshops, films and tours, all designed to help you, help the planet. Craig says the summit began as a pilot programme, but has grown into a roadmap for change - one that Wao hopes to mainstream throughout the country. “This year we are focusing on where we live, what we eat and how we consume. From building to agriculture, this summit is a blueprint of sorts, offering the tools to create a truly regenerative future for our community,” She said. “We have some incredible things planned and we encourage you to get involved. Even one change, no matter how small, is significant. It’s the collective change that matters,” Craig finished.

Tournament chairman John Hart says: “This new date avoids any tournament conflict for players, and whilst we have no certainty at present, we are hopeful that travel and quarantine restrictions and alert levels by that time will allow more freedom of travel between Australia and New Zealand, and hopefully even further afield. “We are fully committed to holding the New Zealand Open next year at whatever level is possible, subject to Covid restrictions allowing. Our team are currently in the planning phase to once again deliver a world-class event.” This year’s Open was cancelled due to pandemic, related health risks, and multi-million dollar financial risks. Hart says tournament underwriters Millbrook Resort are determined to do everything possible to stage the NZ Open 2022 “hopefully giving Queenstown and the greater Otago region, which has suffered severely during this Covid pandemic, a much-needed economic boost”.

The New Zealand Open 2022 has been pushed back by a month in the hope it won’t need to cancel and players will have more ability to travel. Organisers have confirmed the 102nd edition of the golf tournament will now be held at Millbrook Resort, Arrowtown, between March 31 and April 3, 2022. It was original due to be held in late February.

The NZ Open, which will be played across 36 holes at Millbrook Resort (including the new 9 Holes opening shortly) for the historic Brodie Breeze Trophy, will be broadcast by Sky Sport in New Zealand and through various networks internationally. Organisers worked with Golf New Zealand, the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Asian Tour, to find the new date. The two major Australasian tournaments, the Australian Open and the Australian PGA Championship, have been rescheduled from November/ December this year to January/February next year. This date change will apply to the 2022 event only, with the intention that the 103rd NZ Open be held in February 2023.

Vaccination Rates are approaching 80% in our region As of last week, “78.3% of eligible Southern [SDHB] residents have had their first dose of the vaccine, and 43.5% are fully vaccinated says Southern DHB Medical Officer of Heath Dr Susan Jack. ‘Southerners have done a fantastic job in getting vaccinated but we need everyone who is eligible to do their bit and have the vaccine so we can get to 90% or higher as soon as possible” The SDHB vaccination rates compare with 75% of the national 12+ population receiving the first dose and 40% being double dosed. “Our vaccination rates are one of the best in the country, and this has only been made possible by the hard work of more than 110 providers, including general practices, pharmacies and Māori and Pacific Health Providers across the district vaccinating our community – we are hugely grateful to them. We are also hugely grateful to all Southerners who have done their bit and been vaccinated.”

Barcelona issues annual public transport tickets to former car owners Barcelona is giving citizens free, unlimited public transport for three years when they give up their private vehicles. Since the program began in 2017, more than 12,000 ‘T-green tickets’ have been awarded, reducing the city’s traffic by 10,613 cars and 1,735 motorcycles. This ticketing system has been supported by the introduction of the Low Emissions Zone (LEZ), towards the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, which restricted circulation of the most polluting vehicles from Monday to Friday working days, from 7:00 to 20:00. As the LEZ came into force, the city saw a rapid rise in request for the public transport ticket. Most people in Asean say no to coal, yes to renewables as climate risks grow: Survey The majority of people in Asean want to shift away from polluting fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy to tackle climate change as floods, loss of biodiversity and sea level rise loom as the top three climate threats in the region, a survey of public attitudes released on Thursday (Sept 16) shows. Most governments in the region are not doing enough on climate change and need to enact climate-friendly policies and increase green spending, respondents said in the 2021 South-east Asia Climate Outlook published by the Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme at ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute. Overall, 70 per cent of respondents said climate change is a serious and immediate threat, reflecting the region’s vulnerability to the growing impacts of stronger storms, floods, droughts and rising sea levels. With over 70% of the eligible population having received at least one dose and also booked in for their second jab, the case to reopen the border to overseas visitors grows. That’s great news for Queenstown Lakes. But what that will look like, and just what the future holds for tourism in the region, is a huge question yet be answered. Early next year, and maybe before Christmas for Australia, our borders will gradually reopen. Initially it will be a trickle from a safe list of countries, potentially including Singapore, South Korea, UK, Vietnam and Canada. Not sure where the US sits, but I suspect Air NZ will hope it is quickly added to the green list, given it is talking about reinstating the direct New York service that never actually started. My annual Bali trip is a thing of the past, however, and India, Malaysia and Africa will be painfully slow to reopen. While New Zealand will be a wildly-popular and, hopefully, safe destination after our Covid response, the reality is the challenges and costs to getting here will deliver significantly fewer visitors. The paperwork required, with new protocols including vaccination passports and pre- and post-departure Covid testing, will preclude many from making international trips at all. Fewer airlines will call here, less often, using smaller aircraft. NZ will, therefore, be even more expensive to get to with less competition and fewer seats available. This may result in those that do visit staying longer, which is great news, but the visitor experience, especially in Queenstown, will need to appeal to a much smaller, wealthier market. I suspect that the mass tourism that Queenstown enjoyed, effectively ended in March 2020. Those who make the effort will be looking for a truly unique experience, more personal, higher end, so many businesses will have to decide to transform completely, get out or close down. The majority certainly won’t be doing business ‘normally’. Many in the tourism industry, at the government’s instigation are already planning this. DQ have started the discussion locally, around tourism strategies that will control numbers, which I suspect isn’t an issue anymore, keeping more money in the local economy and introducing more user-pay charges so as not to burden the local ratepayer base, while enforcing local regulations including those protecting the environment There are some in the industry that are surviving and waiting, assuming that the resumption in international travel will return them to profitability and aren’t taking transformative action. The future is unlikely to deliver what they hoped. The market will be much smaller with more bargaining power and more demanding. There are also more options, just consider the accommodation sector. There are at least three new hotels opening in the next six months, including a six-star resort, on top of those that opened just prior to the 2020 lockdown. These will offer the latest in bells and whistles. Anyone that hasn’t significantly upgraded recently will struggle. That scenario goes right across the industry. Compliance requirements to keep everyone safe have already commenced. Scanning isn’t going away and masks are also likely to become a permanent fixture. Ultimately there is no going back to how Queenstown was two years ago when international travel was seen as a more of a right than a privilege, which will be music to the ears those that voiced their concern at the way Queenstown was headed pre-Covid. The pandemic will prove to be the catalyst that drives changes. Funny, that it may have been the very circuit breaker we needed. Let’s hope we are ready, and if we are I’m convinced we will be able to deliver a better experience and thrive with smaller numbers that will balance the visitors and local enjoyment of our remote and extraordinary part of the world.

Overlooked and undervalued, New Zealand’s community caregivers have become the ‘invisible’ essential workers

As Auckland enters it’s fifth week in level 4 lockdown and the rest of New Zealand stays at level 2, spare a thought for the nation’s invisible network of essential community support workers. They are the people caring for those who, through age or disability, cannot work or leave their homes, cannot independently care for themselves, and who in many cases have underlying mental health and cognitive problems. While other front-line essential workers are rightly recognised for their service, it’s important we also remember those less obvious workers who put their own health and well-being at risk to care for and support some of our most vulnerable citizens. Often these community workers receive little support themselves. And while the stress on hospital staff, supermarket workers and even political leaders has been acknowledged, this other essential group has largely gone unnoticed. As one community worker told us when reflecting on being overlooked as essential workers and the potential impact this could have on their own wellbeing: At the start, the government kind of didn’t even really consider us as health workers, did they?

Struggle for pay and PPE In our ongoing research, we have so far heard from over 75 community support workers nationwide about their well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are employed mostly by private companies (some not-for-profit) contracted to a variety of government agencies, including the Ministry of Health, ACC and district health boards. Our preliminary findings show these workers struggled to gain recognition throughout the first national lockdown in 2020. Furthermore, they struggled to be paid and to receive even the most basic personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by their employers: Our employers were so slack, not recognising that we needed [PPE]. But they were following Ministry of Health guidelines and so it was government […] it was the World Health Organization — it was everybody. What was wrong with people to think that we could go out there and do our jobs without PPE? And then why do we have to have such a battle for it? Because it was actually hard enough doing the job without having all of that as well. This very real struggle underscored a wider battle by community care workers to be appreciated for their work — or even to be “seen”. As one support worker noted: In comparison with nurses, who are angels, caregivers are just ignored […] it’s like a little underworld where, all over your city, women, mostly in uniforms in little cars, are getting in and out of the cars and going into houses and doing things that nobody has any idea about.

Working in isolation Despite working with people in the most vulnerable situations, support workers spoke of being turned away or facing public backlash when trying to use essential worker queues at supermarkets. And yet these support workers are undeniably essential. In many ways they are the “glue” in the health system, as another told us: One thing I want to make sure that you understand is that we look after [everyone from] medically fragile children to palliative [cases]. We look after all of them — anybody that wants to remain in the community, then has a health issue, we look after them. Even during the best of (non-pandemic) times, these workers operate in isolation. The majority hardly ever see a co-worker, and almost never see a manager in person. Communication is via impersonal emails, phone apps or call centres. But during lockdowns, support workers are the only people isolated clients see — they step in as communicators and carers. In effect they become like family. They have to deal – alone – with the confusion and anxiety of their clients. Their own well-being and mental health often come second: I felt unsupported in regards to dealing with these [client] behaviours at the time, because there were no people on the ground. They were all working from home, so they were all on a phone. So, in some cases, my biggest “PPE” would have been having someone there, and it wasn’t there. I had someone on a phone.

‘I would have just loved a phone call’ As with other healthcare workers, coping is a strategy built up over time by community support workers: It’s like, right, suck it up and just, you know, dry those tears and put on that smile and be your bouncy self again […] I’ve had to learn. But unlike other healthcare workers, such as those at COVID testing and vaccination stations and hospitals, community support workers don’t have a team around them for support: We just had days and days where we didn’t hear anything from our employer and we felt really alone and vulnerable. And, of course, when we went into lockdown and everything, we didn’t feel supported at all. It was very frightening. We had to go out there as essential workers and, oh God, it was stressful. Asked what might improve their well-being, a common refrain has been that employers and society in general pay attention and care more: Somehow showing how you’re valued […] It would be nice just to have a “you’re doing well” or something. I would have just loved a phone call, just to check if I’m coping or not.

We are looking for a new team member to become an important part of this support network in the role of lodge assistant tasked predominantly with the upkeep of the communal areas in this 100-bed facility. The ability to integrate themselves into the lodge community, and where necessary, provide additional help to lodge management is important. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of initiative with the drive to work autonomously & a clear eye for detail. Ideally, you will have experience and proven ability in a similar cleaning role. During QRC term time (not aligned with school holidays), early weekday hours from 6:45 am will provide 25-30 hours weekly. Throughout the 2-week recess periods, ﬂexible hours will be higher to assist with a changeover in residents. With an immediate start available we are currently unable to support visa applications.
