Scant Consideration
On the 6th January 1874 the Arrowtown Borough Council came into existence, when the town was declared a municipality. In 1989 the Arrowtown Borough Council was amalgamated into the wider Queenstown District Council but retained 2 Councillors and a degree of planning autonomy under an Arrowtown Ward. 2 Councillors were reduced to 1 in the 1990’s as representation was further diminished. September 16, 2021 marks a sad day in Arrowtown’s civic history. By way of a flawed consultation process to comply with an arbitrary population criteria and in an effort to appease Wanaka lobbyist, Councillors voted to finally end Arrowtown’s direct representation around the council table after 147 years. Councillors had the ability to look beyond satisfying a pure numbers criteria and to accept the many submissions from the Arrowtown community that sought the status quo. They chose not to. Under the government guidelines, any review asked Councillors to combine ‘communities of interest’ and by doing this, achieve fair and effective representation for those communities. Consideration had to be given to things like distinct local history, economic and social activities, dependence on shared facilities and transport links etc. Scant consideration was given to these guidelines relating to Arrowtown concerns.

A dedicated Arrowtown ward councillor has worked extremely well since amalgamation. They are there on the ground on a daily basis. Arrowtown has managed its growth and amenity protection well. Arrowtown is a working town and an increasingly popular visitor attraction which makes it an important economic driver for the whole district. Tourism and peripheral growth has put tremendous pressure on its infrastructure, especially areas that need constant council servicing. A local councillor can recognise these problems and act on them. Under the expanded ward there is no guarantee a councillor will even come from Arrowtown. Arrowtown is special both locally and nationally and the whole district should take pride in that. Even those from over the hill. Heritage, environment and community all remain fragile without strong leadership and oversight. We are not the most beautiful town in New Zealand by chance. It has required a huge amount of work by a large number of people over many years. The only small consolation is that the newly created Arrowtown Kawarau ward makes more sense than the one originally proposed that stretched all the way from Gibbston to Kingston. I am also encouraged by new young Arrowtown leaders putting their hands up. They just have to get themselves elected to this expanded ward to ensure Arrowtown still has a strong voice. Arrowtown absorbed into larger ward by Payl Taylor
Queenstown’s population boom has finally killed off Arrowtown’s hopes of retaining its own councillor.
“The community has an enormous supply of associations and organisations supporting the welfare and history of Arrowtown.
After 150 years of direct representation at the local government level, the historic gold mining town is set to become part of a larger council ward, taking in new subdivisions such as Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate.
“It just needs democracy to work and have more than one bearing the weight of everything required in Arrowtown.”
Councillors on Thursday voted to drastically alter the ward boundaries, to meet the rules which require representation around the council table to reflect the populations of the Queenstown Lakes district.
“They will hopefully realise that to have three people speaking for them is actually a positive move forward.”
Arrowtowners, including former ward councillors Scott Stevens and David Clarke, gave an impassioned defence of the town’s right to sole representation, both when the issue was raised at council in June and through public consultation. There were 49 submissions made on the issue, about 1.5% of Arrowtown’s population, while there were 201 submissions from Wanaka (1.3%) on its representation, which had included plans to axe its community board.
And Cr Val Miller said it was “an inevitability” that Arrowtown would lose its sole representation.
The Representation Review changes will see three wards established, with 11 councillors, rather than 10. Four councillors will represent the Queenstown-Whakatipu Ward, four the Wānaka-Upper Clutha Ward and three the new Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward In a late change, three of the four Wānaka councillors will sit on its community board.
Arrowtown councillor Heath Copland, at Thursday’s meeting, said he felt council had listened to the concerns from the Upper Clutha “loud and clear”.
That change was proposed by Wānaka Cr Niamh Shaw, who said the council has “underestimated the dissatisfaction of at least a third of the community, specifically the Upper Clutha and other smaller communities”.
The Wānaka Community Board was retained and the Upper Clutha will now have four councillors, rather than three.
She highlighted the 1600-signature wild card petition, by Wānaka mechanic Dean Rankin, for a standalone council for the Upper Clutha.
“At the same time, I feel the Arrowtown community certainly did voice their recommendation and what they would have liked to see, especially with the retention of the Arrowtown ward,” Copland said.
“Instead of saying ‘everything’s fine’, I would like us as a council to critically and specifically review how we communicate and engage with our residents at all levels within the organisation,” Shaw said.
“And I do feel we maybe haven’t listened to them as loudly as we’ve listened to the Upper Clutha.
Appeals and/or objections can be made until 22 October, with the Electoral Commission making a final decision if any are received.
“The resolution before us, although it stacks up from a population ratio basis, I do think there’s a lot of other things that need to be considered.”

Both Copland and Cr Craig Ferguson voted against the change in ward boundaries, while mayor Jim Boult said he supported retaining the Arrowtown ward, but understood the issue, so voted the other way. Seven other councillors voted for the change, which they saw as a positive for the town and district (one councillor was absent). Rustic Soul Designs creates unique furniture, homewares and art pieces from recycled materials. The company’s founder Niall Walsh and his team have saved wood from landfills and building waste to create a spring collection. There are longgrain serving boards, vegetable garden nameplates and bike stands. 10% of the cost price will go towards three community charities: the Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens, the Queenstown Trails Trust and Kiwiharvest. “This collection embodies what Rustic Soul Designs is all about – creating unique pieces utilising recycled timbers and being a positive force by supporting the local community and environment,” says Niall. “We want to integrate into the community more and give back more. We want to align ourselves with people who share the same values, that’s why we have chosen these three charities. Our aim here is twofold – to give some money and help raise awareness of what these guys do for our community.” Niall says the spring collection initiative is going to be the first of many. He started Rustic Soul about four years ago and took the opportunity to create a business that’s true to his values.

Council have dropped the town centre parking ball by Payl Taylor
Queenstown’s council has “dropped the ball” on town centre parking, according to councillor Penny Clark. Hundreds of spaces have been temporarily or permanently removed from downtown, due to various ongoing construction projects. Ballarat Street carpark has been the biggest single loss, with 125 spaces axed early last month. The land is being used as a depot for the arterial road project. Other projects, such as the streetscape works and the council project to install a sewer pipe through the town, have seen on-street parking lost from more than half a dozen streets. It comes after years of the council systematically removing almost all free long-term parking, replacing it with pay-and-display or two-hour time limits. Clark told councillors and staff on Thursday she understands the push towards ‘active travel’, such as cycling, which will reduce both congestion and the environmental impact. “But the fact remains that for the economic wellbeing of Queenstown we need somewhere to park some cars.” Back in 2019, council infrastructure boss Peter Hansby revealed analysis had shown the need for 1,100 off-street, covered carparks near the CBD by 2022. But none have been built and plans for the council to build a 240-space multi-storey on Boundary Street were axed earlier this year. The cost would have been $28 million, but there are already 130 spaces there, so it was seen as uneconomical. “I understand why that fell over and support us not going forward with that,” Clark says. “We looked at Ballarat St, we’ve even dabbled with the Rec Ground, but we’ve taken car parks away in this town and we’ve not replaced them.” Covid-19 and the ‘Shovel-Ready’ funding presented excuses, she said, and there are plans for temporary solutions later this year. “I feel we have dropped the ball in this area. I understand why. We have lots of potential excuse with Covid, but it is critical we worry about our economics in town and get somewhere to park some cars please.”

Her comments were made as councillors voted to protect their ability to require accessible-permit parking spaces as part of new developments. New Government rules mean from February 2022, the council will no longer be able to dictate a minimum number of carparks with new developments. While the new rules separate out accessible-permit parking, in Queenstown they were required as a proportion of total spaces. Councillors voted to remove that technicality. They also voted for reduce the speed limit to 30kmh outside all Queenstown schools.

If you want to make a change, do it. Talking about it is an illusion. If you have decided that you really want to make a change in your life then the best way to make that happen it’s just to get on and do it. Too many people talk about one day they’re gonna make a change. It could be to lose weight, it could be to get fitter, it could be to become happier on a more consistent basis. It might even be to find that life partner, the one that is your soulmate. And yet talking about it gives you a false sense that this has actually been achieved, it gives a sense of comfort and temporary satisfaction.

All you need to do is run, it’s that simple.
The best thing you can do is to decide what needs to happen and take action to make that happen. Let me give you an example.
Once you’ve started running on a beach, on the grass in fact you don’t even need running shoes in order to start running, something magical happens when action is taken.
Let’s say that you decided that you want to start running and that in nine months time you want to run a marathon from zero to hero.
It’s called momentum, it’s called self belief.
There are two routes that you can take, let’s take a look at both. The illusion. When you are talking B.S. 1. You look online and you book yourself into a marathon, you then look online again and find yourself what you consider to be a suitable training program. 2. You then go and buy yourself some shoes and all the other bits and bobs that you need in order to achieve your goal. 3. You then start to tell your friends and your family what it is that you’re going to be doing and you might even put it on social media.
Once you’ve started the snowball rolling down the hill it’s much easier then to research which marathon you might want to run and which training program you might want to adopt. Of course you’re going to need to invest in some running gear for training, yet the difference this time is that you’ve already started running, you’ve got some experience, you know what you want the kit to do and therefore you can become more stealth like in your purchases. You are taking effective action and every day takes you closer to where you want to go. If you want to make a change that’s to do with your habits and behaviours and how you generally feel about yourself then take action today.
You’ve got everything ready, conditions are perfect, you’ve got everything in line and yet you haven’t actually been running.
People tend to think that change is difficult, that change takes time, that change is expensive. This also is an illusion.
You feel as though you’re taking effective action although what actually happening is procrastination.
We have people around the globe on a daily basis to change their life. It takes three sessions and the changes are fast and it lasts. I’m not suggesting that you need to book in with one of our coaches.
You’ve fallen into the perfectionism trap, perfectionism is actually just procrastination in disguise. It gives you the illusion that you’re taking action when really it’s ineffective action that takes you nowhere near to where you want to go. Just do it. It’s really simple, you just do it. You don’t need the fancy running shoes, you don’t need the fancy training program, or even the watch that tells you how far you’ve run in what time, what your heart rate is doing or even when your toenails need trimming.

Robinson and Hackett named in NZ’s winter Olympic team by Payl Taylor
Queenstown’s Alice Robinson has been named in the New Zealand Team for Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022. Alpine ski racer Robinson competed at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang 2018, becoming New Zealand’s youngest ever Winter Olympian. Since then, she’s become the country’s most successful ever ski racer, stunning the alpine ski racing world with five FIS World Cup Podiums, including three wins. Robinson, still only 19 years old, was one of the first five athletes named in the team 2022 on Sunday, along with world champions and Zoi SadowskiSynnott and Nico Porteous. Slopestyle and big air free skier Margaux Hackett, 22, daughter of bungy pioneer A.J. Hackett, and Finn Bilous make up the roster so far. Alice Robinson was just 16 when she represented NZ at PyeongChang 2018, finishing 35th in Giant Slalom. “I’ve grown a lot as a person and as an athlete over the past four years,” she says. “PyeongChang was a fantastic experience for me and I leant a lot from it, I’ve made a lot of gains since then and I’m really looking forward to Beijing and I’ll be doing everything I can to get on the podium.” Alice wrapped up her 2020/21 season with a win at the World Cup Giant Slalom finals in Lenzerheide (SUI) in March 2021. She is coached by Chris Knight and Jeff Fergus and trains at Coronet Peak. Most of the others named in the team are based at Cardrona Alpine Resort, and have had incredible results over recent years. Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, 20, who won bronze at PyeongChang, became the first snowboarder to ever defend a FIS Snowboard Slopestyle World Championships when she retained her title in March this year. She landed on five other World Cup, X Games and World Championships podiums this Northern Season, including a gold medal at the Big Air World Cup in Kreischberg (AUT).

Fellow PyeongChang bronze medalist Nico Porteous, 19, is the current Freeski Halfpipe World Champion and X Games Superpipe gold medallist. Olympian Finn Bilous, 21, and newcomer Margaux Hackett will both be representing New Zealand in the freeski slopestyle event as well as participating in the freeski big air event, which is making its Olympic debut in Beijing 2022. Further Beijing 2022 selections will take place between October and January with additional alpine, cross country and freeski and snowboard athletes working towards qualification, as well as athletes from ice sports including speedskating, ice figure skating, luge and curling. The selections are conditional on receiving an official FIS (International Ski Federation) quota place for the games. Snow Sports NZ High Performance Director and CEO Nic Cavanagh says the athletes have delivered world class performances across the qualification period to book their Olympic spots. “To be selected for the Games at this early period is an outstanding achievement. These athletes are all ranked amongst the world’s best athletes for their chosen disciplines and they’re looking forward to wearing the fern and making the country proud when they compete in Beijing.” The Olympic Winter Games will take place in Beijing, China from February 4-20, 2022.

Gibbston concert moves to later in the year by Payl Taylor
Classic rock will return to Queenstown’s Gibbston valley in 2022. But organisers of the popular three-date Summer Concert Tour, which includes the Gibbston show, have confirmed it will move from its usual January dates to March. Greenstone Entertainment CEO, Amanda Calvert says: “With current border restrictions and the uncertainty surrounding events as a whole, we wanted to give concert goers some reassurance of our plans and to give everyone something to plan ahead for and to look forward to in March next year. “We recognize the importance of the Summer Concert Tour to the regions in which it visits, not only from the millions of dollars of economic benefit it generates each year, but also the hundreds of local suppliers that we’re able to engage and support. “We are in the final stages of securing another fantastic line up of artists for the concerts and can’t wait to share more details on these soon.” The nationwide tour will also see a change to its usual roll out, with Taupo now being the first show of the tour, on Saturday, 12 March, Whitianga the following day on Sunday, 13 March, and the tour finishing up two weekends later in Queenstown on Saturday, 26 March. The outdoor show has brought the best of international classic rock to New Zealand for more than a decade now.

Trail runners have a new challenge to test their legs, lungs and heart. The Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon has added a new uphill only race to its February 2022 event, a short sharp climb to the peak of Ben Lomond.

It will be the first ‘Vertical Kilometre’ race in Oceania. Runners will climb 1200 vertical metres, over the 3.9km course. And Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon & Trail Runs have also partnered with Sky Running Australia & New Zealand (SANZA) for the 2022 marathon. That means it will double as the New Zealand Sky Running Championships. Event co-director Antz Longman says: “We’ve talked with Skyrunning Australia & New Zealand and several athletes over the last few years about how as an event we can support the development of the sport in New Zealand. “This also gives New Zealand athletes an opportunity to gain experience in the discipline before heading overseas, by hosting a Vertical Kilometre, the NZ Championships and being a World Championship qualifying event we’re able to help those looking for a pathway to the world stage.” The 11th edition of the Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon & Trail Runs organised by the Foster family from Ben Lomond Station includes 56km, 42km, 30km, 21km and 10km distance, run on 19 February, 2022. All courses finish near Moke Lake.

Move towards green planes and buses by Payl Taylor
Hydrogen could be the future of domestic air travel in New Zealand. Air New Zealand and aircraft manufacturer Airbus have announced they will work together to research how hydrogen-powered aircraft could become part of the carrier’s fleet. Airbus is looking at three concepts for hydrogen-powered aircraft, including a turboprop, turbofan and blended wing option, and hopes to have one to market by 2035.
The zero-emissions technology would reduce Queenstown’s huge carbon footprint, although the majority of greenhouse gas emissions come from long-haul. Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran says the company is looking at Sustainable Aviation Fuel for long haul operations, along with battery and hydrogen for shorter domestic flights. “This research will help to inform future decision making as we work towards net zero emissions by 2050.” Regional airline Sounds Air, which runs scheduled flights from Wanaka to Christchurch, has already placed orders for three 20-seat, electric ES-19 passenger aircraft from Swedish-based company Heart Aerospace. They’ll be delivered in 2026. Otago Regional Council has also announced this week it is testing electric buses on its Dunedin routes. A GBV Enviroline 35-seater e-bus will join the Orbus Dunedin fleet on select routes in October. The trial is a collaboration with Go Bus. ORC’s Orbus Dunedin contract is split between Go Bus and Ritchies Transport, but Queenstown Orbus at this stage is contracted solely to Ritchies. Central government policy requires all fossil-fuelled buses to be replaced by 2035, with no new fossil-fuelled buses to be introduced from 2025. However, all three technologies - hydrogen, electric and sustainable aviation fuel - will require major changes to New Zealand’s coal-fired electricity generation infrastructure to be truly green.

Arts+Culture The art and practice of beading jewellery By Bethany Rogers
Hannah Bailly has been a beadwork artist for more than 34 years. She grew up in Northern California and spent her childhood finding obsidian arrow-heads in the river banks. She unearthed stones of agate and jasper that she’d polish and make into pendants. After taking a course on Native American beading at the age of 18, Hannah began to develop her craft. “The first couple of stitches I learned were in California, from a woman who was teaching Native American beadwork. Traditional Native American beadwork styles have evolved with the hybridity of the different tribes of Native Americans, as well as the introduction of glass beads from Europe. Traditionally, the beads were made from stones, clay, anything they could get a hole into. They used porcupine quills quite a lot too. “There’s some really, really amazing indigenous work.” Now based in Dunedin, her artwork has appeared in fashion magazines and art exhibitions. Her exquisite and detailed work attracts clients from around the world. As well as creating jewellery, Hannah repairs historic pieces and teaches beading from her studio. “I use glass beads that are Japanese made because they’re super high quality and easy to work with. And then I also use a lot of semiprecious stones, whether they’re beads or rock cabochon, or faceted stones. “I’ve recently started with tiny, tiny semiprecious stones. I’ve got garnet and larimar – they’re so tiny, it’s tricky to weave with them, but it produces a magical effect.” Hannah has repaired precious 1920s Art Deco pieces and worked on bridal gowns. Recently, she was commissioned to craft a pendant incorporating a quartz Persian intaglio seal from the Sasanian Empire (dated 224–651 CE), so the owner could wear his treasured possession. But the business of beading hasn’t always been easy. In the early days, a very youthful Hannah wasn’t sure on how to best run her business, so she asked someone to do the selling and marketing for her. “I later found out she was selling things under her name and was claiming the pieces had been made by an artist in Italy. I found out when I walked into a shop that had a piece of my work and the assistant said: ‘isn’t this piece beautiful? It’s by an Italian designer.’” Around the same time, Hannah gave birth to her son and decided to scale back her business. Tiny beads and tiny children don’t mix, she jokes. It marked a turning point in her career. “A friend in Tākaka supplied my work throughout that period but that was it. I took a different path. I went back to university and finished my Batchelor of Arts, did my honour degree and then my master’s degree at the University of Auckland and then Otago.”
Hannah went on to teach Cultural Anthropology at a university. Though she still teaches part-time, beadwork has come back into her life in a big way in recent years. “I say Cultural Anthropology has nothing to do with beadwork… but actually, that’s a lie. It’s a very different sort of field but my interest is in beadwork from the Native American perspective and considering the different traditional peoples around the world who engage in beadwork and the reason they do it. That’s always been a fascination of mine. “Cultural anthropology helps me to enquire more into those areas. I’ve been through a Victorian phase, which is still there and I’m doing quite a bit of exhibition work. “It’s funny, I have two things going on. I need to make a living, so I do little pieces that I can turn over quickly at markets. These have a very Victorian feel to them. But then I also get to go crazy and get really creative for exhibitions and special commissions.” Hannah’s completed a new exhibition collection for the Ivy Box art gallery in Queenstown (134 Park Street). New beginnings for Queenstown art By Bethany Rogers gallery Queenstown art gallery The Ivy Box is entering a new chapter thanks to an extensive renovation project. Housed in the town’s original butcher’s shop on Park Street, the building has been lovingly restored and extended, with the addition of a modern gallery and artists’ residences. The Ivy Box will re-open to the public on 24th September 2021, with an aptly-named ‘New Beginnings’ exhibition. The exhibition will feature the work of The Ivy Box Founder and Director Lynda Hensman as well as work by talented contemporary artists curated by Lynda. “The building no longer served me. It was freezing! It was time to take the building on a new journey, to evolve it into a more modern – and warm – venue for contemporary art,” says Lynda. “I’m looking forward to not having to wear gloves and a scarf while painting! But more than that, I think the renovation has managed to preserve the essence of the building, whilst giving it a new beginning, a new lease on life. “It’s in an incredible location, on the fringe of Queenstown CBD, right on the lakefront and with gorgeous views and I wanted to preserve and enhance that. “The haphazard 1970s/80s extension has been demolished to make way for sweeping windows on the upper floor, while the ancient stone walls have been preserved and our famous ivy and Virginia Creeper will be lovingly encouraged to grow back – though not through cracks in the windows and cupboards like it did before the renovation!” The gallery originally opened in 2015 and while the building has been transformed, The Ivy Box continues its dedication to authentic New Zealand art. Artists at the opening exhibition include Sue Hartly, Jane Sutherland and Odelle Morshuis. The exhibition will also introduce up-and-coming young talent like Hana Coleman. “The Ivy Box will still be a venue for authentic art that’s created with passion. The artists on board all have the same passionate dedication to their art – they create from the heart and are ‘outside the square’ in terms of approach and thinking. I’ve hand-picked them for that reason. “While the landscape outside is beautiful, you won’t find traditional landscape art inside. The new gallery space will be a home for art that stimulates all the senses – there’s grit, contrast and passion in all of it.”

Head down to Queenstown Medical Centre for your COVID-19 vaccination and you’ll likely be greeted by recent Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) graduate Isaiah Morgan Boniface. His experiences on the six-week army-based course left a lasting impression on him. “You can’t afford not to go,” he says. Isaiah had been looking for work for about a year when the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) invited him to a seminar about LSV. “It was a really cool seminar! I spoke to one of the instructors there, and it sounded really fun, something that would give me a lot of different learning experiences, something different and strange.” The LSV team flew Isaiah to Christchurch on the second day of the course, where he met the other Burnham-based recruits. “It was really cool to have everyone be so passionate about one person. I was the last person and they were all working hard to get me there the whole time.” Isaiah was struck by something a Corporal told him: “You are not your thoughts”. This motto helped through lockdown and now as he starts his new job. “If you are stressed and tired, you really don’t have time for it. You can just think about it, acknowledge the thought, and let it pass through. It helps you calm down and focus and get on with your work.” Isaiah learned the importance of self-discipline, but he also learned to not fear asking for help. He’s carried this over to his job. His new boss Ashley Light, CEO of Queenstown Medical Centre, said Isaiah has the right mindset for his role and is a keen, quick learner. He was put through two “very robust” interviews as well as online tests to ensure he was right for the job.

Segev’s grief soon moves to rage when he realizes it was no accident and the killers have high tailed it to NY. The series is filmed in Tel Aviv and New York. Line of Duty is a UK police series that follows DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), who joins the Anti-Corruption Unit (AC-12). Arnott is partnered with DC Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), an undercover officer with a keen investigative instinct. Their work requires uncovering corruption within the fictional Central Police Force. Line of Duty has six series where AC12 investigate seemingly disparate cases involving potential corrupt police officers that start to link up through the series. AC-12 tracks the pervasive nature of corruption and the police’s deeprooted links to an organised crime group. The overall plot thread revolves around discovering the identity of “H”, a corrupt person or persons of senior rank within the police force who are instrumental in running organised crime. This was originally broadcast on the BBC and is now available on Netflix.

Explained is based on Vox’s previous YouTube videos series, which followed a similar format.The show’s episodes average between 16–18 minutes, with each focusing on a different topic. There have been three seasons and 22 episodes.Enlightening series digs into a wide range of topics such as the rise of cryptocurrency, why diets fail, and the wild world of K-pop. The show has also spawned five limited spin-off series. On September 2019, they released The Mind, Explained, focused specifically on topics related to the human brain. On January 2020, a follow-up titled Sex, Explained was released. On April, the Coronavirus, Explained. Last September, the 3-episode miniseries, Whose Vote Counts, Explained went over the history and context of voting in the United States. Broadway is BACK! The longest shutdown in NYC’s Broadway history is over. Last Wednesday, the biggest shows in musical theater, including “The Lion King,” “Wicked” and “Hamilton,” resumed performances 18 months after the coronavirus pandemic forced them to close. There are still considerable question marks- The pandemic is not over and tourists are not back. The reopening of Broadway symbolises, the energy, the diversity and the spirit of New York City according to Mayor Bill de Blasio, and will be followed by other performing arts venues, in New York and around the country. Indoor performances, The Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Carnegie Hall and the Brooklyn Academy of Music are all starting new seasons. Those attending shows on Broadway will find the experience changed: every show is requiring proof of vaccination (patrons under 12 can provide a negative coronavirus test) and every patron must be masked. Indonesia: Officials arrest key figure in Jemaah Islamiah, the group behind the 2002 Bali bombings Indonesia’s counter-terrorism squad has arrested Abu Rusdan, a suspected leader of the Al Qaeda-linked group Jemaah Islamiah, which has been blamed for a string of past attacks, including the 2002 Bali bombings. Indonesian authorities consider Rusdan to be a key figure in Jemaah Islamiah, which the US and UN have designated a terrorist group. Nigeria: Gunmen free hundreds in jail raid Armed gunmen raided a jail in south-central Nigeria, blowing up the perimeter fence and freeing 266 inmates — almost everyone in the prison, authorities say. A soldier and a police officer were killed in the attack and two guards were missing. The attack destroyed fences on three sides and included a gun battle with guards at the medium-security prison near the capital Abuja, authorities said. To whom it may concern, I am writing to inform of the unjustified planned removal of a group of mature Eucalyptus trees on Brecon street/Cemetery road corner opposite IFly and the new skyline building complex. Whilst the trees are not listed as protected tree’s, they really should be, this is due to the poor system of protecting trees in New Zealand which could be driven by the constant need of growth and the archaic views to remove trees that are seen as a “nuisance”. Back to the subject trees, whilst not listed, they are of significant aesthetic importance to the local area and I believe are among some of the oldest species of Eucalyptus in the Queenstown lakes district. These trees are planned to be removed as part of the Whakatipu transport alliance program in way for a footpath. Yes, a footpath. Leading towards the new skyline complex, indicated to be 4-5m wide. To my knowledge the health and integrity of these trees are sound and pose minimal risk to public safety, they are simply being removed for a footpath design. Concerns around the removal of these tree’s has been discussed and raised by local Arborists who have reportedly all been asked to quote removal and collectively turned down the job. The WTPA are pushing ahead with the removals and have now engaged an out of town contractor for the removals. Arborists and Engineers can work together to design an engineering solution to minimize the impact on the tree but still deliver an alternative solution to install footpaths/walkways, whilst keeping the trees for public amenity. These channels for the keeping the group of Eucalyptus have not been explored to my knowledge. The clock is ticking, and these tree’s will be removed if some noise isn’t made about this in the public eye. Please take a stroll up there and to view the impact these trees have on Brecon street and the importance of keeping them for future generations, you can’t miss them. These are not the only tree’s that are of concern, with more significant tree’s inline for the chop... Yours Faithfully, the Concerned Arborist

Brecon Street is part of our Town Centre Street Upgrade programme, which is jointly funded by the Government’s Shovel Ready fund and QLDC. Key features of the Brecon Street portion include: • A continuous 4-5m wide footpath along the northern side of the street • An improved 4m wide footpath on the southern side to interface with new hotel developments and Lakeview • New and existing native street trees and plants. • Rationalising carparking on the southern side of the street • Improvements near the Skyline building to prioritise pedestrian access and make pick-up / drop-off safer. • Lower Brecon Street to become a low speed, shared space prioritising walking and cycling. • New streetlighting and furniture to encourage social gathering. • Improvements to the Brian Smith Reserve • Signalised intersection at Man / Brecon street • New wayfinding signage As highlighted by your reader, five Eucalyptus trees are intended for removal to allow for a 4m wide shared path and battered slope to meet existing private property levels on the corner of Brecon Street and Cemetery Road. These trees were already earmarked for removal as part of the hotel development proposed at 34 Brecon Street and related proposal to realign Cemetery Road. Three of the trees sit within road reserve and two straddle road reserve and a private property on Brecon Street. We have confirmation that the owner of the private property supports the removal of the trees to enable a proposed hotel development on the site. The design team has explored alternative options to try and avoid the removal of the trees but have not been able to make any of them work without compromising the trees. While these are established trees and add to the aesthetics of the area, they are not native nor are they located in a place the community might congregate for shade or shelter. It is correct that three Queenstown-based tree removal companies were approached to provide a quote for this work and all three declined. We are currently awaiting pricing from companies based outside Queenstown. Trees are an important part of every community and we absolutely understand that removing established trees can be an emotive issue. The removal of these trees will enable big improvements to our walking and cycling facilities, create a far better connection between Brecon Street and the town centre and make it considerably safer for people to access the tourist attractions location in the area. It’s important to note that retaining and improving the tree canopy throughout the town centre is an essential element of the street upgrades programme and will play an important role in creating an area the community is proud to visit and share with our visitors. New native species will be introduced throughout the town centre as part of this programme, at greater numbers than we currently have in the area.
