I read Queenstown Mayor Jim Boult’s quote in the ODT the other day. “Dire Straits” was how he described our predicament to Tourism Minister Stuart Nash. I couldn’t agree more. This is dire. And the only way out is vaccinations. I acknowledge that living in a free country (except under current circumstances) means freedom of choice. And if some in a free society do not wish to be vaccinated for whatever reason, that is their choice. I pass no judgement. I think the Ministry of Heath estimates this group to be 10% of the population. I do however, pass judgement on is the next 10% who just don’t care. They are the 10% who would only roll up their sleeves if someone came around to their house, prised them off the couch with an offer of $50 and a box of beer to get the Jab. Just plain lazy and no interest in contributing positively to the rest of society. We can pretty much write this group out of the vaccination program too. So that leaves the rest of us. The magical 80% of adults living in the Queenstown Lakes District. We all need to get vaccinated. It’s that simple. Current government policy is clear they have zero tolerance for covid in the community and the only thing that will loosen the strangulating noose of government control and business crippling lockdowns is an 80% vaccination rate, at least.

The Southern DHB is doing well compared to some other DHB’s but still, woefully short of the magical number of 80%. As of last Thursday, just over 54.4% of the eligible population had one dose, 27.1% fully vaccinated, leaving almost 45% unvaccinated. Subtracting the 20% based on my theory of those who won’t get vaccinated for whatever reason, that’s 25% of us still needing to pull ﬁnger and get with the program. Come on Queenstown, we are better than that! We cannot live in a closed border world forever and keep the mutating strains of Covid out. Even the staunchest Jacinda Arden Covid Free New Zealand advocate must see the closed border policy is short term at best and a mere handbrake on Covid while we get the vaccination rates up. Even with closed borders, Kiwis still have the right to return. And we clearly can’t contain those returnees in MIQ without the Delta strain getting out. Case in point… right here right now. So, what’s the only tool we have left? You don’t need to be Einstein to work this one out. When we emerged from lockdown last year, the message was “go local, support local” and we did. As a local business owner, I really was overwhelmed with the support of our community and that of domestic tourism. Your custom again, is always very much appreciated. Winter Olympian Beau-James Wells retires by Payl Taylor

Queenstown Lakes top freeskier Beau-James Wells is retiring from competitive skiing. Beau-James says after 11 years of skiing halfpipe competitively, he’s moving on into the world of freeski filming. For the two-time Winter Olympian, who competed in Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018, it’s an opportunity to follow his passion and continue to inspire outside of the competition environment. The Wanaka athlete, who trains at Cardrona Alpine Resort, has been a strong force on the international competition circuit, representing New Zealand at the most prestigious global freeski events since he was just 15 years old. He is a Dew Tour medallist, two-time Junior World Champion, and twotime Olympian across two disciplines, placing 4th in Freeski Halfpipe in PyeongChang (2018), 6th in Freeski Halfpipe and 21st in Freeski Slopestyle in Sochi (2014. He’s also had numerous Winter X-Games appearances and competed in 27 Freeski World Cups. “I have a lot more fun when I’m skiing for a video or film, and I can be more creative. I’ll be skiing in the backcountry a lot more too, and building jumps out there while still skiing in the park and pipe,” he says. “The plan for the rest of the winter is to film as much as possible while we still have snow. I’m also getting married in November which is really exciting, then I’ll head over to the States with my brother to film for the winter season over there.” Beau-James at X Games Aspen, 2020. As the third of the four Wells brothers, a surname synonymous with success in the freeski world, he grew up living and breathing skiing. Alongside success in competition, he’s become a leader of freeski community both in New Zealand and internationally, and was Team NZ flagbearer PyeongChang. He has led the development of the ‘athlete voice’ at Snow Sports NZ as the inaugural chair of the Senior Athlete Leadership Team (SALT), and was an athlete representative on the NZOC Athletes commission, advocating for athlete voice for New Zealand athletes. He is also an NZOC Olympic Ambassador, visiting schools throughout New Zealand to talk about the Olympics and inspire young Kiwi kids. “I would like to thank all the staff at Snow Sports NZ, High Performance Sport NZ, and the NZOC for their support over the last 11 years, I had a great time working with you all.” He also thanks his family, fiancée Liberty, sponsors including Cardrona, and the people who’ve kept his body working; strength and conditioning coach Shane Crowhen and Dr Mark Clatworthy, “for fixing me and keeping my body strong”. TECHNOLOGY CAN TECHNOLOGY HELP US FLIP CLIMATE CHANGE?

When looking at climate change, our societies seem to fall into two broad categories: those who think we’ve caused irrevocable damage to our environment, and we are past the point of no return and see little point in even trying to prevent further damage and those of us who have hope that we can at least stabilise the pattern of warming.

Falling into the latter category takes a little science-fiction-inspired thinking but many believe that exponential technology may be able to flip climate change. Given the current set of solution are not working fast enough you better hope they are right.

Exponential technologies cover a broad spectrum of tech that’s on an exponential growth curve. The term includes artificial intelligence, robotics, and nanotechnology – which are all rapidly accelerated by lower costs in computing power and driven forward by extreme capitalism. These are technologies that we wouldn’t have even dreamed of being possible ten years ago but are now very real parts of the solution potential. Take for example the University of Boulder’s metamaterials which just five years ago didn’t exist. This material repels the sun’s rays whilst simultaneously allowing heat energy to escape using a process called passive radiation cooling. In short, it actively cools anything below the material even in direct sunlight without the use of electricity. It’s estimated the material will cost just $0.50 per metre to produce. This could eliminate vast quantities of energy used for refrigeration and air conditioning.

Or we can look at lab-grown ‘clean meat’, produced using stem cells from animals. The cattle industry is responsible for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions and some estimate it’s responsible for 75% of Amazonian deforestation. This development in the production of food has backers from Bill Gates through to the World Wildlife Fund because it’s more humane and it could cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared with traditional meat production. Whilst not as beneficial as cutting out meat from our diets completely, this gives humans a more sustainable option if we still wish to consume meat. The first commercial product hit the worlds shelves at the end of 2018 and has now passed safety reviews and been approved by many nations regulatory food agencies and has the potential to open the door to a future when all meat is produced without the killing of livestock. These are just a few small examples from the wonderful world of Exponential Technology. By implementing these new discoveries humanity might just stand a chance of slowing and in the future potentially flipping the climate change’s current trajectory. We can do little to regress humanity’s past developments, but we can decide how we build tomorrow’s cities.

We need more time for three waters decision – mayors by Payl Taylor

They would be run by independently appointed boards. One board would cover the whole South Island, made up of two stakeholder groups. One stakeholder is 27 councils representing 1.5 million people; the other is Ngai Tahu as mana whenua. Both stakeholders would have equal rights overseeing new 3Waters services. Councils have until December to make a decision to opt in or opt out, with Government planning a $2.5 billion support package for the changes. Councils are supposed to analyse and give feedback on the proposals by October 1. But Zone 6 civic leaders have now formally indicated to the Minister that this is not enough time, especially as they are knee-deep in resource management reform and a review into the future for local government. “The Mayors and Chairs of Zone 6 ask that the Government pause the reform process to allow communities sufficient time to better understand the significant amount of complex information on which the Government has based its case for change and to allow councils to engage with our communities about it,” Cadogan says. Mayors and council bosses across Otago and Southland are collectively calling for a pause on Three Waters reform. They’ve written to the Minister of Local Government Nanaia Mahuta to formally request more time to allow councils to engage with their communities.

“We also seek the Government to significantly up its game in providing information to the public on why it believes the reforms need to happen and what the effects of the reforms on councils and communities will be. “Without this pause, there is a very real risk that communities will not be able to make informed decisions about the merits of the proposed reform.

Clutha mayor Bryan Cadogan is chair of the ‘Zone 6’ group - which spans Southland, Gore, Queenstown, Central Otago, Waitaki and Clutha district councils, Invercargill and Dunedin city councils, and Otago and Southland’s regional councils.

“Rushing the engagement process will simply not provide for good decisionmaking, and the decisions made as a result could see adverse and costly consequences for communities, councils and the Government for many years to come.”

“This is the biggest decision of our lifetimes, and we need more time to consult with our communities,” Cadogan says.

She added: “We have asked for feedback during August and September that will inform the next set of decisions for Cabinet. There are some councils who do not want anything to change and I accept the scale of change is daunting but not the intent. These water reforms are intended to benefit all councils, every community, and all New Zealanders.”

“As councils, we consult over the changing of a lightbulb. “The mayors and council chairs have been meeting over zoom in recent weeks and it was unanimous that we write to the Minister. “ Billions of dollars of funding is needed for essential upgrades to drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services across New Zealand, to meet new health and environmental standards. They are owned and operated by 67 different councils. Government is proposing the management of all councils’ water services be transferred to four publicly-owned entities, beginning 1 July, 2024, but the ownership of the infrastructure would remain in councils’ hands.

In a written response, Mahuta said: “Small rural councils like those on the West Coast stand to benefit the most from these reforms and it’s been disappointing to see mayors who have been asked to engage in the process playing political games with their communities’ futures.”

Three West Coast councils are also calling for a pause. The Westland and Grey district mayors and the West Coast Regional Council chairman have also written to Mahuta asking her to put the reform process on hold. Buller Mayor Jamie Cleine declined to join them. Mahuta has linked years of underinvestment in 3Waters infrastructure by the country’s 67 councils with outbreaks of deadly bacteria in drinking water; lead contamination; regular boil-water notifications; and poorly treated wastewater running into freshwater streams and lakes. Cadogan says councils have to focus on priority spending, without increasing council rates and charges beyond what people can afford to pay.

Officers responded to the emergency on the tracks above Fernhill at about 1pm Saturday. With paramedics and a 4WD, it took them about two hours to remove the injured woman from the site, who then had to be transported to Dunedin Hospital via helicopter. Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said officers were “extremely disappointed” to be called to the crash and find so many other riders up in the woods. “Police will be speaking to the biker at a later date and enforcement action for breaching restrictions will be considered,” Coster said. “The other mountain bikers on the track were educated on Alert Level Four rules”. The woman was riding McNearly Gnarly, a flow / jump track built in 2019, which has 54 jumps and 64 berms. Queenstown Mountain Bike Club has reminded local riders to ride within their limits and avoid technical trails during lockdown. Coster said generally police are pleased with the level of compliance nationally to the lockdown restrictions. They’re still taking an education-first approach, but will move to enforcement action quickly when required. Of the 99 charges police have filed since Alert Leve 4, 65 are for Failing to Comply with Order (COVID-19), 21 for Failure to Comply with Direction/ Prohibition/Restriction, 11 for Health Act Breaches, and 2 for Assaults/ Threatens/Hinders/Obstructs Enforcement Officer. In the same time period, 256 formal warnings were issued and 1594 infringements nationwide.

COMMUNITY NOTES Support Conservation Week History of Conservation Week

Conservation Week is a national celebration that encourages people to get involved in nature and help to take care of it. This year the theme is “Take a moment to notice nature” and relates to how our personal wellbeing and nature’s wellbeing are interconnected. The Department of Conservation is encouraging people to get involved with Conservation Week from 4-12 September.

Conservation Week was originally launched in 1969 by the New Zealand Scout Association, with the goal to promote greater interest in the environment and encourage people to take practical actions to look after it. The Nature Conservation Council then had a turn at running the campaign, while other organisations like the Post Office Savings Bank, Caltex Oil NZ, and The Todd Foundation came to the party with educational resources.

Nature needs us New Zealand’s wildlife is still in crisis with more than 4,000 of our native animals and plants threatened or at risk. Conservation Week is a chance to bring everyone together to do something, big or small to create change.

Over the years famous artists like Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Don Binney have contributed their art for previous campaigns. When the Department of Conservation was formed in 1987 it took over the Conservation Week duties, and has since worked with other groups, businesses, councils and agencies to make it what it is today.

Every year Conservation Week sees thousands of New Zealanders getting involved through doing conservation activities at home or attending one of many events hosted across the country. Even though this year may be different, with the threat of Delta and lockdowns, we can still do our bit to create change and make a big difference. Take part by getting outside (adhering to Government recreation guidelines for each alert level) and interact with your community or via online events such as Hungry for Knowledge lunchtime talks and daily conservation quizzes.

How to get involved You can make a difference starting in your own backyard! We have a list of five fun, family-friendly conservation activities available to get involved at home. These are easy and can be done at home or on a walk on some of our many trails across the Queenstown region. The point is get active and show your love for our nature. Nature photography: Use DOC’s beginners’ guide to capture what you love most about nature and find fresh ways to experiment for the perfect shot. Most people use their smartphone or a digital camera to take their photos. So we asked photographers around DOC for their tips on how to get the best shots from any device 4. Identify ten common birds in your local space: DOC has a bird identification guide to take a closer look at ten birds that have always been around. Look for them in your garden, or outdoors this Conservation Week. 5. Attract lizards to your garden: Get involved in conserving our lizards by creating an inviting home for them in your garden and make a lizard lounge.

The Merino Muster cross country ski event is named in honour of those who mustered their flocks down from the ranges before the first snow fall of winter and will take place at the Snow Farm mid to late September. The event is now in its 27th year and run by a passionate bunch of volunteers. The muster has something for all ages from the 1km loop for the under 10’s to the 42km competitive cross-country race. There is also a 21km, a 14km and a 7km race. Basically, choose your distance depending on fitness and experience Ski across the rolling and beautiful Mt Pisa range... on New Zealand’s best cross-country tracks at Snow Farm. The memo is facing backlash from a major union. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, said the notice is “a sick marketing stunt by the airline that removed duct tape from the cabin in 2014”. The memo comes as airlines have seen an uptick in incidents with passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration have documented 3889 unruly reports since the beginning of the year and 2867 reports of passengers refusing to wear masks during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A woman was restrained to her seat with tape on an American Airlines flight in July after allegedly trying to open the plane’s door and attacking a flight attendant. This month, flight attendants on a Frontier Airlines flight restrained a passenger with duct tape after he allegedly punched and groped crew members.

Don Everly, the surviving member of the rock ‘n’ roll duo The Everly Brothers, has died at the age of 84. A family spokesperson confirmed Everly’s died at his Nashville home. Everly and his brother, Phil, had hits worldwide in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including Bye Bye Love and All I Have To Do Is Dream. Abba: Band teases major announcement ahead of new music Pop group Abba have teased a major announcement for this week, as fans await their first new music in 39 years. The Swedish band launched a new website last Thursday titled “Abba Voyage”, asking fans to register interest in a new project. It is expected to be a long-gestating “hologram tour” that Abba initially announced in 2016. The band are also expected to release five new songs to accompany the show. The quartet - Agnetha Faltskog, Anna-Frid Lyngstad, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson - returned to the studio in 2018, promising two new songs later that year. Those tracks, I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down, have been repeatedly delayed - and the band are now planning to release five tracks to thank fans for their patience. Earlier this year, Ulvaeus confirmed the music would “definitely” come out this year. “It’s not a case any more of it might happen, it will happen,” BBC

What to plant in September On bluebird August days, when temperatures hit 13 degrees, it’s easy to start getting excited about Spring and the warmer months ahead after a topsy turvy winter. It’s great to get motivated for the coming growing season and to start sowing some seeds. This year, NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) have tentatively predicted an El Niño climate cycle and a warmer and potentially wetter September and October. Yet, in the same breath, NIWA have said August, September and October could be drier than average. Lots of cooler water over toward South America apparently. Confused? Yep, me too!

Other heat-loving plants to get a head start on include capsicums and eggplants. Some sort of mini glass house in the kitchen works wonders to lift temperatures up. You could even consider purchasing a heat pad.

So, I typically ignore all the ‘proper’ forecasting and go on how creaky my lower back feels and how red the end of my nose is. It’s best to play it by ear and have a frost cloth ready to protect seedlings during any frosty blasts (an old blanket will do). In September, I usually like to get a good head start on tomatoes. So many delicious heritage varieties out there. My absolute favourite is black cherry (try Kings Seeds), they just keep on giving all season long.

This is also good time to be sowing brassicas indoors, broccoli, cabbage and bok choy. These are all plants you’re going to eat in the future months, so try planting some salad crops to eat sooner. You can sow lots of yummy greens either in seed pots indoors or directly into the soil in tunnel/glass houses, under cold frames or using hoops with a clear plastic cover. Think rocket, spinach and kale for three easy, reliable crops. Sow once a week to give yourself a continuous supply of cut and grow again leafy greens right through the spring. Happy gardening! Salvation Army nears hub goal by Payl Taylor

A $350,000 grant has pushed the Salvation Army closer to its $9.4 million goal to build a Frankton hub. The grant was one of 15 approved by the Central Lakes Trust last Monday, 16th August. “We are all over the moon with the funding and feeling extremely grateful,” the Salvation Army’s Jade Zeina says. “This puts us very close to our funding goal having raised a total of $8.4m of the $9.4m build cost.” The purpose-built Remarkables Park facility will provide a base for the Salvation Army, as well as below market-rate office space for social services, and a community theatre.

“This grant will not only have an impact on Salvation Army, but will help other organisations that are struggling with high rents. Together, we will be able to deliver a holistic approach to community care for generations.” It will also provide a multi-purpose room for community groups to run workshops and classes, as well as a meeting room for smaller needs like video conferencing. QLDC’s Quality of Life survey identified a lack of community halls and spaces in our region. The hub design will incorporate an auditorium for a seated audience of up to 150 guests for small scale drama or music productions with movable staging, quality sound and lighting systems and a modern kitchen. “This should go some way to catering to the lack of community hall space,” she says. Since the Trust commenced 21 years ago, it has granted over $125 million back into the community. A total of $6.86 million of the $9.60 million grants budget for the 2021/22 financial year has been allocated to date. Some $620,075 in grants was approved at the Monday, August 16, meeting, bringing the total to $6.86 million for the financial year so far.

It will be 783m2, spread over two storeys. Salvation Army will operate all their services from the ground floor, while the social services take the first floor. CLT Grant Manager, Mat Begg says: “Prior to COVID-19, the Salvation Army in Queenstown were already dealing with a steady increase in demand. “Last year they saw a 300% increase in demand with hundreds of people using their services for the first time. A purpose-built facility for their multiple services, will make delivery of their services more streamlined.” Zeina says much consultation went into choosing the site and the design of the new hub. “Massive growth in the district’s population over the past 12 years has seen a shift in population from the central area of Queenstown to the Frankton area, this means locating the hub at Frankton, just makes sense. “We need to be where the population is.” She says the CLT gran will be instrumental in helping complete the fit-forpurpose social wellbeing hub on the first floor, which will be home to other likeminded social agencies.

Here we go again….. It feels a little like Deja vu right? I have a question that might just change

how this feels for you.

When we went into lockdown 1.0 it was a bit of a novelty, the quiet, the nature coming closer, the clear diaries. With that also came the worries, the uncertainty, the groundhog days. Since that time we have been so busy, helping people with their mental health, anxiety being a huge issue. We set about creating online tools to help people navigate the unknown, we gave these tools away and continue to do so to this day. See below for the info on the free stuff. One of the first questions we ask our clients is what it is you want from our time together, most people tell us what they don’t want, what they want to move away from, the list is like this: 1. I don’t want to feel anxious anymore. 2. I don’t want to keep waking up feeling like the day is over already. 3. I want to stop this behaviour. 4. I want to stop talking to myself so badly. 5. I don’t want to feel like this anymore.

- Spend time on self development.

Lockdowns do that to us.

- Get creative.

We focus on what are the negatives, what we are missing, what we can’t do and in turn we create anxiety by worrying about the future. The truth is that anxiety is an emotion of the future, we are projecting out there into the void and seeing it go wrong, we are creating Future Memories™ that in turn creates anxiety.

- Connect more with people I have not spoken to in a long time. See what comes up for you, it’s a simple question that changes how you feel about a situation we cannot change.

Queenstowner appointed Visit Fiordland boss by Payl Taylor

A well-known Queenstown tourism business manager has been appointed the new boss at Visit Fiordland. Stu Cordelle has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, most recently had general manager roles at both Shotover Canyon Swing, and Ziptrek Eco Tours, both in Queenstown, and has previously worked for Real Journeys and Mitre Peak Cruises. “So I understand Fiordland,” he says. “I’ve spent time in Te Anau and Fiordland and it’s handy that I know a number of the operators already.” Cordelle had been involved with representing both Fiordland and Queenstown overseas as, until this week, Fiordland had been in an International Marketing Alliance (IMA) with Queenstown and Wanaka. But this week, Southland and Fiordland established their own IMA, the ‘Great South Alliance’, with the aim of giving southern New Zealand a higher profile in the international market. “In the past Queenstown has been marketed as the gateway to Fiordland, but there are multiple ways to get there, and Te Anau is definitely the true gateway to Fiordland,” he said. Great South GM tourism and events Bobbi Brown said Cordelle brought significant expertise in international travel trade so would be managing that for Southland as well as Fiordland. His role would add to the strength of existing Fiordland staff, including Gemma Heaney, as well as tourism and events staff in Great South’s Invercargill-based office. “He’s well known and respected in the sector and it’s great to have someone with his experience and mana on board.” Cordelle had also implemented sustainability in tourism travel businesses which was a priority for Great South, Brown said. Great South assumed management of the Fiordland Regional Tourism Organisation in April this year and renamed it Visit Fiordland.

Arts+Culture Phoenix Rising: a summit for creatives By Bethany Rogers

A new summit for people in (or interested in) the creative industries is coming to Queenstown. In its first-ever regional event, The Phoenix Rising Summit is holding a popup event at Sherwood Queenstown (Thursday 23rd September, 5pm – 9pm). Supported by MishTix, the event is a coming together of creative industries. Those involved in the local music, media and entertainment industry are invited to attend to connect, enjoy live entertainment and hear inspiring stories from leading creatives.

“I think there’s a lot of creative people in the region and a lot of good stuff going on. […] There are people here who have ideas for really intriguing things and I guess sometimes it is just a question of matchmaking people and finding ways to finance things.” The Phoenix Rising Summit offers an opportunity to do just that – to connect with other creatives in the region and further artistic practices and ideas by connecting with and learning from others.

Leading the discussion will be: New York times best-selling author and award-winning media company co-founder Golriz Lucina; Philip Smith, CEO of Great Southern Film and Television; and Dave Gibson. Dave Gibson moved to Arrowtown three years ago in pursuit of ‘semi-retirement’. One of New Zealand’s most successful film and TV producers, and former CEO of the NZ Film Commission, Dave isn’t ready to leave the industry behind. “For the last few years I’ve been down here living in Arrowtown, supposedly semi-retired, but I’m finding it a bit of a struggle to not keep being involved in things,” jokes Dave. Dave’s recently become involved in the events industry with a brand new e-bike festival called Cyclorama. He also assists people in the film and TV industry through consulting, supporting projects with his expertise and working with start-ups. “I’ve always been involved in helping other people with their business ideas and projects and things like that. So I guess that’s one thing I’ll be talking about at Phoenix Rising – how you start things and get things going, and how you finance things and find audiences.

“I guess I’m out of a storytelling background with reasonable success at getting things made and getting them out to the world.” Dave Gibson founded the Gibson Group, which went on to become an award-winning design and production company. What started as more traditional production work blossomed into an innovative multimedia company that uses creativity and technology to produce powerful stories. “I do have quite a wide background. We started out as a traditional production company and then we started moving into what is called the GLAM industry (Galleries, Libraries, Arts and Museums). “One of the early projects we did was for a museum in France and they didn’t want to have traditional objects, they wanted everything to be very new, very digital. We had to come up with interesting things that would occupy the whole family – the 75 year old grandfather and his 12 year old grandchild. “[…] So the conversations you end up in are fascinating because you’re working in new technologies but in many ways what you are doing is still storytelling. Dave sold the Gibson Company around 10 years ago to become CEO of the NZ Film Commission, working on projects like Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It was the first time someone from the industry had been selected for the role. “It was interesting for me because I jumped the fence from an entrepreneurial, private film/TV thing, to being on the other side.” The Summit will be almost informal; it includes drinks, a BBQ and an opportunity to connect with fellow creatives. Dave adds that, as someone who has been to many conferences, he’s excited it’s going to be markedly different from the sort of event where attendees listen and take notes while someone talks from a podium for hours on end. “I’m intrigued to see what sort of people turn up,” he says.

Turn Up the Music Trust are seeking music teachers. So what? big whip? but in some places this scenario can be dangerous, it can cause offense, it gets the attention of all eyes in the room. Queenstown has been pegged as a place with an ‘audacious heart’ and the likes of Winter Pride (now in its fourth year) has worked hard to put this destination on the map for as a safe haven for the LGBTTQIA + “When guests land in Queenstown, Queenstown airport not only have their pride flags flying out the front, but a welcome message on all their digital screens - this is amazing, and you won’t always see this on your travels.” says Pride Director Martin King. “I’ve never felt threatened as a gay man” says Bob Tovey, who has been living in the area for 35 years. Bob’s herb farm ‘Basil Parsley and Partners’ is based in Cromwell but he comes to Queenstown for his ‘fun’ and gets involved with Pride in all manners to promote our colourful rainbow community. “Without a doubt Queenstown is the most inclusive and embracive place... One of those places is Erik’s Fish and Chips. They had their rainbow arch between their two food trailers installed 5 years ago for Pride week and never took it down. “Our core values are to support the community we live in” says owner Anna Arndt. They see all the more reason to display the rainbow for staff who are of that community. In 2018, Winter Pride launched a sister organisation called Pride Pledge which adopts the inclusion of the rainbow community year-round. 100 businesses from Queenstown and Wanaka have since taken the pledge and proudly showcase the rainbow sticker on the front door. Among those who have pledged are high profile businesses such as Wayfare, Accor Hotels and NZSKI.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has delivered a sobering update on how much the Earth has warmed and how the climate system is responding. The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) is the most comprehensive yet. It shows Earth is now 1.09oC warmer than it was in the 1850s, and that each incremental increase in warming will bring more extreme weather events. For the first time, the assessment also includes a regional breakdown of observed and projected changes. It shows that while the Australian continent has warmed faster than the global average, at 1.4oC since 1850, New Zealand’s climate has been changing in line with global trends over the last century. The average temperature has gone up by 1.1oC and sea levels have risen about 20cm. The wetter western parts of the country have become even wetter, with more heavy rainfall events, while the drier regions in the east and in Northland have become drier.

The seas will also continue to rise, but how much and how quickly also depends on the amount of warming the world experiences. Even if we manage to cap warming at around 1.5°C, New Zealand will experience up to half a metre of sea level rise by the end of this century.

A changing water cycle The latest assessment report takes a storyline approach and dedicates each chapter to a specific element of Earth’s climate system. I was an author for a chapter on the water cycle. Water is vital for life, and changes in water availability have serious implications worldwide. Overall, we see that the water cycle is becoming more intense, that is, a warming atmosphere leads to both more precipitation over land and higher evaporation. The magnitude and frequency of floods and droughts are increasing in many parts of the world. There is not enough published literature on such trends in New Zealand specifically, but we do know that climate change has made individual floods and droughts more intense in this country. It is clear that all aspects of the water cycle are affected by warming, including rain and snowfall, glacier mass, groundwater storage, river flows and the oceans. One clear signal is that variability and extremes in precipitation are increasing, above the rate of the global average. Unless we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions rapidly, we will see even more substantial changes in the water cycle worldwide, including the loss of glaciers and the river flows they feed, more intense precipitation, more extreme rainfall events and associated river floods, but also more intense droughts and an increased risk of wildfires.

Projections for the future continue this theme, becoming wetter in the west, while the eastern regions and the far north continue to dry, especially in winter and spring.

Irreversible changes The change in rainfall is associated with an overall increase in the strength of the westerly winds across the country, along with an increase in high pressures and settled weather over the far north as the atmospheric band known as the “subtropical high pressure region” is moving south, closer towards the pole. The overall average warming brings an increase in hot days around the country and more frequent marine heatwaves, with warmer sea surface temperatures over the Tasman Sea and around New Zealand. The AR6 shows that some of the changes have now become irreversible, at least on time scales of hundreds or even thousands of years. Across the globe, glaciers will keep retreating as the climate warms. New Zealand’s glaciers will also continue to melt and recede and could disappear right up their valleys if warming reaches 2oC or more.

As the climate warms, storm tracks are moving towards the poles in many regions, notably across the southern hemisphere. At the same time, the high-pressure regions in the subtropics are expanding poleward. The net effects for New Zealand are that the west and south will see increased precipitation in winter and spring, while the north and east will see reductions.

Abrupt changes We now have a much better understanding of how aerosols (air pollution) affect the water cycle, especially for tropical monsoons and tropical rainfall generally. An increase in aerosols has generally offset the effect of warming in recent decades. One proposed technique for managing climate change is known as solar radiation modification. It involves blocking out sunlight by spraying aerosols into the stratosphere. But recent research shows this could drive abrupt changes in the water cycle and affect different regions in potentially disruptive ways. For example, continued Amazon deforestation, combined with a warming climate, could tip the Amazon ecosystem into a dry state during the 21st century. Climate change has never been more obvious or better understood. Nor has the urgency of action been clearer, if we are to avoid the really catastrophic consequences. Reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions must by a priority, from now.

Comes in different energy combinations like the shaky newbies with the kind of ebikes that have no suspension or the obnoxious man’s club who ride e-mountain bikes in pairs, side by side, flicking the bell and talking about running a business during covid. Dislikes verbal confrontation but likes the social talking point it brings. Glasses and spandex: Mission fit. Nothing else matters. They want to achieve distance by day and lodge a good record on strava (cos people are watching). Can be striding on foot or peddling a road bike on a gravel track. Glasses. Colourful spandex... Rarely speaks. Often nods. Family outing: Multi-aged posse consisting of multiples of mum and dad and kids or mum with walking kids, mum pushing pram possible one walking child. Tend to scatter everywhere on the track because everything is new and being discovered. Toddler pace. Often leaves an item behind. Gets frazzled with anything that could damage their little ones. Daily dog: Committed to the canine. This four-legged pooch needs to be exercised twice a day with the daily goal of taking a poo. Often found off the lead and sniffing out dropped food and the best spot to cock the leg. Owners can be seen distracted in conversations talking about their dog, picking up poop, flicking poop or dog disciplining. Internal explore: Solo and deep in thought. Slow to medium pace can sometimes be caught singing or dancing. Uses a listening device to help with the imaginative transportation. Prefers to be alone and in a trance. But as you can see there are many sub groups within the general groups. Fact of the matter is this is a popular multi use space and we all need to be considerate so we can ultimately all improve our experience with that space. Coming into summer it’ll only get busier. Here’s some generic ones to work on and set us on the right path of mutual respect. 1. Look ahead and lower speed when crossing with another track user. 2. Depending on the user, judge whether you should stop or slow right down. 3. Be aware. Turn listening devices to a level where you can still hear the natural surrounds. Birds chirps are nice to listen too. 4. Be a team leader. Teach simple brains to follow your directions.
