It sucks, but we can do this Last Tuesday afternoon was a day like most others. Tuesday is LWB delivery day across the region and we were popping into businesses to give them their personal copy. Town was quite busy when the ski fields emptied and then at around 3pm I got a text from one of our journalists that a positive case had popped up in the community. It didn’t even occur to me at the time that I would need to grab files from the office before I left for the day because I wasn’t going to be back on Wednesday. The 6pm full lockdown announcement was quite a surprise. For South Island business leaders, it sucks but we get it and if I had thought it through, I would have logically concluded that once one Delta case got in, everyone was going into isolation until the health officials had a grasp on how far and how quickly it has spread. There is no doubt the current lockdown will thump local business and our GDP really hard! Many events, shows, gigs including most of Winter Pride are now all cancelled or rescheduled and with Auckland staying in lockdown for a while yet, that wonderful stream of visitors’ dollars will also dry up. Another insight was the number of visitors who were in town when the lockdown was announced. Shame everyone jumped on a plane and headed north to get home. Personally, I would have thought it was better to do lockdown here.

We have been here before and survived and as painful as it is to say we will do it again. For a while it’s going to be hard but we are resilient and a very supportive bunch. It sucks and its hard but with the vaccine rollout ramping up to respectable levels now, there is a pathway out of this and one that’s sustainable this time. We will survive the near term and we know what to do. Last year the town pulled together, whether that was neighbours looking out for each other or locals supporting local business and the other ways around, that spirit is required again. This time support services will be sorely needed and will be needing our help. I don’t know, but suspect many people have less buffer this time around. History shows us that the economy will bounce back quickly once the country reopens and conﬁdence in travel returns and I think it likely that activity will be back at pre-lockdown levels by the end of the year. Meanwhile hopefully from Saturday, when we are released from level 4, let’s enjoy our relative freedom and count our blessings. I for one am looking forward to enjoying having our town, just for ourselves again. I’ll enjoy it more this time. David Gibbs General Manager | Queenstown Media Group

Council finds alternative to jump park by Payl Taylor

Billionaire Xero co-founder Rod Drury is renting a construction depot for Queenstown’s council, to save the Gorge Road Jump Park from the bulldozers. Last month, the future of the popular jump park was secured following a community campaign, which led to discussions between Drury and Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) had the park earmarked for a laydown area to store plant and equipment, to support its infrastructure works around Queenstown. QLDC has now revealed the terms of the deal struck between Drury and Boult, after securing an alternative depot site in nearby Industrial Place. Drury agreed to meet the cost of renting the new site. Boult thanked Mr Drury and said the outcome was a positive result for both the community and council. “We acknowledge the community’s desire to keep the jump park in its current location and Mr Drury’s help in finding a solution,” Boult says. “It’s great that we have folk like Rod in our district who are prepared to make such generous contributions on behalf of the community.” The arrangement means the council has immediate access to a dedicated storage area. QLDC Property and Infrastructure General Manager Pete Hansby said Council investigated two potential sites. “We selected the one on Industrial Place because it’s secure, has good access and is close to other Council worksites,” Hansby says. “The site is vacant and available immediately. “This is a good result and I’d like to thank everyone involved.”

There’s no denying the Queenstown Lakes District is a world-renowned place to visit and enjoy, and we also see many people choosing to live and stay here for our unrivalled work-life balance. We open our front doors to an environment like no other, and we’re surrounded by a beauty and vibrancy that people all around the world, quite literally, pay to come and see and immerse themselves in. A diverse range of cultures mix throughout the towns and landscapes of our district, and it’s easy to see why so many people want to make this special place their home. However, many folks struggle to do just that despite having good jobs with an income that in many parts of New Zealand would adequately get them on the property ladder. The attractiveness of our district comes with a price tag and housing here is among the most expensive in the country. In fact, in July the QV average house price index saw Queenstown Lakes top the listing as even more expensive than Auckland. Housing is a fundamental building block of individual, household and community well-being, and yet it remains one of the biggest challenges our communities face. The root cause of housing unaffordability is supply and availability. Limited choice and the quality of houses built in the district also contribute. While Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has committed to tackling this challenge through both the 2016 Mayoral Housing Affordability Taskforce and playing a leading role in the creation and ongoing support of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, we can and must do more for our communities. And we are. We have two proposed initiatives, both of which aim to address the housing challenge faced by our communities. The first is a draft Queenstown Lakes Homes Strategy and Action Plan which sets out QLDC’s aspirations for our housing challenge. It has four outcomes, each with a range of actions and goals, some already underway. The second focuses on provisions in Planning for Affordable Housing. This offers four ways in which QLDC could adjust planning rules to provide for a proportion of housing which remains affordable as building and development occur. Now is time for arguably the most important part of the process: asking what you and the rest of our communities think about these initiatives. This is a topic I am passionate about and personally I believe housing is at the heart of creating secure, connected, and caring communities, creating jobs and a diverse economy. It’s also fundamental to sustainable and responsive urban planning and development. As a district, we desperately need our future community leaders, residents, and entrepreneurs to be able to flourish here, while also being able to attract talent from elsewhere in New Zealand to bring much needed skills to the district. Housing sits as the key obstacle. I strongly encourage you to please help provide Council the direction it needs to address this housing challenge, by sharing your feedback on both the draft Queenstown Lakes Homes Strategy and Action Plan, along with our Planning for Affordable Housing initiative. Queenstown Airport’s profits obliterated by Covid by Staff Reporter

QAC also undertook an organisational restructure, which Young-Cooper acknowledged was a “difficult time for our people”. QAC halted most of its capital expenditure programme and significantly reduced its operating expenditure as a key component of the company’s stabilisation plan. Total operating expenditure decreased by 30% to $10.7 million from $15.3 million last year. The key capital project during the year was a terminal upgrade. Design work was completed and construction began in the terminal building in April, involving a range of improvements to the departures processing area which will ultimately enhance the passenger screening and airport security processes. It will also improve the resilience and seismic performance of the terminal. Queenstown Airport’s profit dropped 91% to $1.6m in the last financial year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Annual results published last week for the year ending 30 June, 2021, show the massive dip from $18 million the previous financial year. That means there has been no annual dividend to shareholders Queenstown Lakes District Council (75.01%) and Auckland Airport (24.99%). Queenstown Airport Corporation board chair, Adrienne Young-Cooper said the priority has been to stabilise the business in the “complex and uncertain” operating environment. Young-Cooper said the popping of the trans-Tasman bubble and the emergence of the Delta variant show “prudent and very cautious operational and capital planning, and the ability to make quick decisions continue to be required”. In FY21 there was a sharp decline in passenger movements (arrivals and departures) at Queenstown Airport compared to FY20, which led to aeronautical and commercial revenue decreasing by 41% and 40%, respectively. Overall, QAC’s revenue was down 40% to $27.8 million from $46.7 million in FY20. Reported Net Profit After Tax was down 91% to $1.6 million from $18.0 million last year. Earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) decreased by 45% from $31.3 million to $17.1 million. Airport operations were down across the board, including passenger movements, fixed wing aircraft landings, helicopter landings and private jet landings. Young-Cooper said: “COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the aviation and tourism industries in the Queenstown Lakes District, and around the world. “Businesses and airlines operating at both Queenstown and Wānaka airports have been severely impacted,” “Providing support to the operators at the airports has been an integral part of QAC’s response. We implemented a broad support programme, including rent relief packages, in early 2020 which was valued at $4.88 million for the reporting period and $6.75 million to date.”

On 21 April the High Court handed down its decision on the judicial review proceedings initiated by the Wānaka Stakeholders Group in late 2019. Managing Director, Simon Flood said: “As a result of the decision, the 100year lease of Wānaka Airport granted by QLDC to QAC on 1 April 2018 was set aside from the date of the judgement. “We have shifted to operating Wānaka Airport under a management services arrangement with responsibility for day-to-day operations. We are continuing to work with QLDC and the Wānaka Airport tenants on a smooth transition from the lease agreement to the management services agreement. “While the past year brought its challenges, it brought to the fore the strength of our airport community and the Queenstown Lakes district.”

Queenstown Lakes District Council is waiting for the full results from the tested samples, but says it appears to be the dye used to chart the course of wastewater, as many people online suggested. The dye is non-toxic. “Given it was a significant quantity released into Horne Creek we can only assume it was a deliberate prank that has unfortunately caused a lot of people unnecessary concern and distress at the thought of someone endangering our waterways and wildlife,” a council statement reads. “It’s certainly something Council takes very seriously and we’re still keen to hear from anyone who may have information about who released it.”

Queenstown’s plan for housing over the next decade by Payl Taylor

Queenstown’s affordable housing crisis at one time appeared to be a problem without a solution. A ‘but, what can we do?’ in the face of skyrocketing house prices, limited land, low wages and rampant speculation.

“Housing is such an important aspect of our district, for businesses, individuals, for the community, so we do encourage people to have their say.” The Trust has so far created homes for 220 households.

Over the past decade, the housing market has continued to rise, even as the pandemic closed off the Airbnb-filled tourist town to international visitors.

But there are 750 households on its waiting list, and it has a target of 1000 new homes by 2028.

But there is now at least some hope for those who can’t afford to save the huge deposit, meet the mortgage requirements and battle other buyers for sections or houses, where entry level starts at $800k.

Scott says that will need a variety of approaches, including partnerships with private developers, such as it did with the Toru Apartments launched earlier this year.

That’s down to the work of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT), backed by Queenstown Lakes District Council pushing for solutions.

It is also working on Tewa Banks in Arrowtown, which will be built on land gifted by the council, while other projects, such as the 44 homes it built in Shotover Country, have been made possible through ‘inclusionary zoning’. For the future of inclusionary zoning in the district - requiring qualifying developments to provide for some affordable housing, long-term and for low- and moderate-income households - the council has set out four options. 1: Update the District Plan to reduce and remove controls that affect affordability, and at the same time, negotiate with developers to provide retained affordable housing when Council is able 2: Update the District Plan to provide a bonus/incentive to developers for the provision of retained affordable housing 3: Update the District Plan to implement a mandatory requirement for developers to include some retained affordable housing – applied to new developments only 4: Update the District Plan to implement a mandatory contribution to include some retained affordable housing – applied to both new development and redevelopments Increasing affordable housing options is just one of the objectives of the 10year housing strategy.

QLDC last week released its latest plan to improve the affordability, supply, choice, and quality of homes in the district over the next 10 years. And it wants the public to have their say on the plan and also ‘inclusionary zoning’ proposals. The plan has been in the works since October 2017, set in motion by Jim Boult’s Queenstown Mayoral Housing Task Force. QLCHT executive officer Julie Scott says the Trust welcomes the plan, which is has been consulted on throughout its creation. Scott says affordability is always likely to be an issue in Queenstown. “The ultimate objective would be to put me out of a job, right? But it’s hard to imagine that ever happening given Queenstown, even the geography, with the mountains all around us, we can’t keep spreading out. “So, the cost of land is going to keep increasing and this is a highly-desirable area. We know there are so many factors that it is hard to see prices ever coming down per se.

The council also wants to ensure a range of housing choice exists for everyone; homes in the district are healthy, warm, and sustainable; and there are partnerships with government improve, amplify and accelerate housing outcomes in the district. Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult encouraged the community to have a look at the information available on both initiatives and to share their thoughts. “These housing measures will set out Council’s role in influencing change in the housing system through advocacy, partnership and local action, and we’re very keen to hear what our community thinks about these proposals,” Boult said. Plant a fruit tree this week It’s still winter! I’m a fan of winter, yet as a gardener I’m already counting down the days to spring, it can’t come quick enough for me and my aching bones.

Let’s create more resilience in our home gardens and our community spaces by planting more fruit trees. One tree can be proliﬁc, with kilos of fruit produced every year.

Winter is a great time to plant a fruit tree. One fruit tree can be feeding you and your family in 3 year’s time for years to come and is also a gift to future generations.

If you were to plant just one tree, I’d recommend an apple tree, and follow the lead of Mark Christiansen and the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust and plant a ‘Monty’s Surprise’. This apple was discovered in NZ a few decades ago on a roadside minding its own business, producing lots of apples and no disease. Research has shown the Monty Surprise as having the highest levels, in any apple, of procyanidins as well as quercetin ﬂavonoid compounds. These are eﬀective at inhibiting cancer cells in the body.

Most fruit trees are unloved chucked in the ground, unpruned, no fertiliser, no mulch and no support plants. You have only got to drive around the district in autumn to see all the wild apple trees laden with apples.

So now you’ve bought the apple tree, let’s plant it. 1. Check the rootstock. Apples come with different rootstocks. The rootstock determines the final size of the apple tree. For smaller gardens, look at an apple on a M9 or M27 rootstock producing a semi dwarf sized tree. For medium sized trees M106 will give you a 3-5m high tree. M106 is also commonly used for espaliering [a tree that can be trained to grow along a wall]. 2. Choose a very sunny spot. Consider putting it near a fence or look at an espaliering on a north facing fence if you are short on space or you live in a cooler spot. The reflection of heat and light by the fence encourages fruiting and ripening. 3. You can begin planting fruit trees from late April through to early spring. 4. Dig a big hole. Bigger than the tree planter bag. The bigger the hole you dig the more soil you loosen up the quicker your fruit tree can build that root system.

Other positives of the Monty surprise are its hardiness and disease resistance, making it even more ideal for backyard growing.

8. The soil level of the ﬁnished planted tree hole should sit 5 to 10 cm below the regular soil level with at least a square metre of space. This allows you to add compost and a woodchip or straw mulch to the surface. The mulch is less likely to get blown, scratched, or ﬂooded away. 9. Next rabbit proof if needed. This is important as rabbits will ring bark (chew all the bark around the base of a tree) in an evening. 10. Stake the tree if you are in a high wind zone. One stake placed in the direction of the prevailing wind is enough. This allows some movement and encourage strong roots. 11. To aid any transplanting shock give the tree a feed with a little liquid seaweed. 12. Then decide what kind of shape you want for the tree. Apples and pears are better as a single standard shape which requires less pruning long term.

5. In the hole, mix through the planting soil with a few quality shovelfuls of compost and 1 to 2 litres of biochar. You could also throw in a few handfuls of slow release sheep pellets. The bigger the hole, the bigger the quantity of compost and biochar. Studies have shown fruit trees will grow bigger and have higher yields, when biochar is used. 6. Some fruit trees have a white or red dot, indicating where to plant the tree relative to the sun. Put the exposed ‘graft’ section of the tree facing south. This will protect the tree from freeze thaw and sunburn. 7. Make sure the ﬁnished planting level is at the same level as the tree arrived in the pot. You’re not wanting to plant the tree deeper, as over time the tree collar will rot and kill the tree.

Don’t let any fruit grow on this tree for the next 3 years. You’re encouraging the tree through this juvenile period to grow rapidly. Fruit takes away from this. During the spring and summer, you can give the tree a liquid seaweed feed drench and foliar(on its leaves) once a month. Keep the mulch topped up.

Fruit trees will grow very slowly if they must compete for nutrients and rainwater with grass and consider irrigation. Otherwise give it a good deep water once a week in drier periods. So, get planting that fruit tree today, there are loads of other Heritage fruit tree varieties out there to choose from.

You just need to follow the news to understand why this needs to be taken seriously. New Zealanders have become complacent with our freedom and it might come back to bite us. Now back to you. People are... shh... it... different. Not all of them are going to follow the rules and be a great law-abiding citizen, like you (thank you, by the way, for doing your bit). Cancer doesn’t stop, and with your help, we won’t either Juliana’s story By Marie Wales Since the first Daffodil Day in 1990, the yearly cancer incidence rate has doubled and is expected to climb further. Here is Juliana’s story Juliana found out she had cancer five days before her wedding and reflects on her cancer journey. On 3 February 2018, Juliana Costa walked down the aisle to marry the man of her dreams, Armindo Machado Junior. Juliana was a beautiful, radiant bride for family and friends looking on and beamed nothing but happiness as she vowed to love and cherish her chosen life partner. Little did many of those in attendance know, but Juliana was hiding a secret. Five days before her wedding, Juliana was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She was 36 years old. In these moments, Juliana committed herself not to let cancer define her or deny her or her family the joy and celebration of her marriage. Since this time, Juliana and Junior have faced many obstacles. Long, complex treatments included chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, cocktails of medications, radiotherapy, and numerous trips to Dunstan, Dunedin, and Invercargill. Facing cancer treatment and all the decisions to be made have always been they have met head-on together. Gaining strength from their strong faith and the belief they had a long life ahead to them to share, they have taken each day as it comes. Juliana and Junior both say to others, "Don't give up on hope, don't give up on each other and don't give up on you."

No one should face cancer alone or struggle. There is a bigger family of support that you don't realise is there. You need to accept that people care and do want to help and expect nothing in return. The Cancer Society staff and volunteers have walked alongside us, as have our friends and people in the community who we would never have normally met. Through all of the adversity in having cancer, we have made good friends along the way who have enriched our lives more than we could have ever expected." Finishing treatment in 2020, Juliana and Junior made another big life decision, to pursue their dream of starting a family. Told there was less than a 1 percent chance of conceiving naturally due to the effects of cancer treatment, they embarked on yet another difficult journey, that of IVF. Unfortunately, their first attempt failed, and they were confronted with the hard reality that they may need to consider getting an egg donor. Needing some time to recover from the emotional rollercoaster they had been on, Juliana and Junior decided to take a break from IVF and focus on completing Juliana's bilateral breast reconstruction. When attending a GP appointment, following some routine tests, the practice nurse asked if Juliana wanted to be pregnant. "Of course", Juliana replied, only to hear those words, "well, congratulations, you're pregnant.!!"

Juliana and Junior couldn't quite believe it was true. Laughing and crying at the same time, they said, "It was incredible. We didn't know what to do. She is truly our miracle baby." Yes, Juliana and Junior are now excitedly awaiting their baby girl to arrive sometime in mid-November. They have named her Liz – meaning Gods Promise. Juliana said, “That focusing on what you want in life and striving to achieve every little goal is so important. Never give up your dreams, as no one knows what can happen when you keep the faith. An angel has chosen us to be her Mum and Dad – dreams really do come true." Daffodil Day symbolises hope for Juliana and all New Zealanders impacted by cancer. For 31 years, this iconic event has inspired people to come together and support the Cancer Society's work.

Thankfully Juliana is now in remission and credits "my faith, my husband, my family, my medical team and my wider community, who have all given me courage and hope for the future. Having cancer and going through treatment can completely turn your life upside down. It's important to reach out and accept what is being offered.

The Cancer Society can’t tell you how heartbroken they are to announce that due to the current Covid-19 outbreak, the Daffodil Day Street appeal won’t be going ahead on Friday, 27 August. An online Daffodil Day donation will ensure cancer patients get the support they need right now as they face the extra stress and isolation of Covid-19.

New bridge to help Queenstowners ditch their cars by Payl Taylor

A campaign to build a landmark bridge connecting Queenstown communities is gathering pace. Queenstown charitable trust The Lightfoot Initiative estimates the Jim’s Way bridge, which would span State Highway 6 near Quail Rise, would cost up to $2 million.

The Lightfoot Initiative began work on the project earlier this year after the Wakatipu Active Travel Network Business Case laid out the plan for active travel route on the Quail Rise side of SH6. The problem was the route funnels walkers and cyclists to cross SH6 near Hardware Lane at the top of the hill, with only a tiny island refuge halfway across between the free flowing 80kmh traffic. “The route itself is logical, because you don’t lose elevation once you’ve crossed the old Shotover bridge, and then have to be really fit to get back up,” Robinson says. “But it didn’t include any safe crossing over SH6. That’s where the whole network falls down, because people need to be able to get over SH6 safely.” The bridge idea is supported by Wakatipu High School, local businesses and the Queenstown Trails Trust, which is currently working on its own trail linking the nearby Old Lower Shotover Bridge to Arthurs Point and Arrowtown. Robinson says for about $1m, funded by Waka Kotahi rather than council, contractors could build a functional bridge, “whereas $2 million is going to get us something that is an iconic entrance to Queenstown”. It would likely take about a year work through the funding process, then another year to build.

The aim is to provide a safe and efficient route for pedestrians and cyclists travelling from communities east of the Shotover, such as Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate, into Frankton and beyond. Trust chair Amanda Robinson says they’ve presented the idea to Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult, councillors, council staff including boss Mike Theelen, and Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency.

“It would be an amazing addition. You can’t argue with the fact it’s going to make a massive difference to connect these communities - that’s at the heart of it.” The Lightfoot Initiative trust was create about a year ago to encourage and support Queenstowners to mode-shift from cars to active travel. It aims to influence policy-makers and designers to create a network that will suit everyone, not just those already in the saddle. “The phrase we use is ‘something that will work for those who are neither fit nor determined’,” Robinson says.

And Waka Kotahi projects team manager Simon Underwood has committed to a geo-tech investigation to assess the suitability of the proposed location, which should take around 12 weeks.

The trust will soon run a series of community-based initiatives and education programmes to support mode-shift, and is in the process of applying for grants to further its work.

“There’s some real substance to the plans,” Robinson says.

“It’s an area that’s woefully underfunded at the moment,” Robinson says, “but my prediction is that within about 18 months people will start to see money rolling in to support the idea of the mode-shift.”

“We’ve had local experts, including Wyatt + Gray Architects, Holmes Consulting, Stantec and Aurum Survey Consultants, volunteer their time to work on the concept.

And the name Jim’s Way?

“And we’ve had some positive feedback from the councillors, mayor, council staff and now Waka Kotahi.”

“The architects came up with that. I don’t think it was consciously [strategic], but what a great idea - it certainly puts the ball in the mayor’s court, doesn’t it.”

Just after lockdown in 2019, local golf professional and business owner, Jamie McIsaac was diagnosed with Chordoma, a rare form of malignant tumour affecting the brain at the top of the spine. The Queenstown father of two young children, moved to Dunedin for two months for surgery and radiotherapy, with his wife Bron and daughters in tow. For the family, the upheaval of up-rooting, changing schools and dealing with the emotional stress of an uncertain recovery was huge but last week Jamie finally had good news: his tumour has stopped growing.

The fourth annual Wao Summit early bird tickets are on sale now but end on the 29th August. Wao’s aim is to educate, inspire and enable New Zealand communities to accelerate towards a carbon-zero, regenerative future and beyond.

Far more common than you think, last year, in Queenstown Lakes District and Central Otago alone, there were more than 15 individuals affected by primary brain cancer - cancers that start in the brain. That is only the tip of the iceberg. There are more with brain cancers that have spread from other parts of the body and those with benign tumours that aren’t cancerous. Brain tumours afflict children and adults of all ages. Queenstown joiner Clint Williams was fit and active, into mountain biking and snowboarding, when at the age of 27 he started getting spots in his vision, vertigo, bad headaches and speech impairment. He had a benign tumour over the speech part of his brain, which later became cancerous. Eight years on, following two surgeries, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, Clint is competing in triathlon and Ironman events but the impact of the tumour lingers with seizures and the need to be conscious of the food he eats to prevent them. Doctors have advised him not to drink which is “probably the hardest change.” Over the years, the prognosis for people with brain tumours has vastly improved with advances in treatment made possible through medical research. Jamie and Bron are incredibly grateful for the community support that helps fund brain tumour research. “It meant we were able to receive leading edge treatment right here in New Zealand instead of having to manage the uncertainty and logistics of international travel with a family of four in a Covid climate.” Bron is now an active volunteer with the New Zealand Brain Tumour Trust. The New Zealand Brain Tumour Trust (NZBTT) promotes brain tumour awareness, care and cure for the hundreds of Kiwis and their whanau who receive this frightening diagnosis every year. It funds brain tumour research so that, in the words of Dr Latika Samalia, Chair of the NZBTT, “…one day we can even find a way to prevent this disease.” The NZBTT was to have held a Silver Gala fundraiser dinner and dance at the Skyline Queenstown on 3 September 2021. We are living in a decade of massive change spurred on by the reality of climate change, a shift in economic paradigms and measures taken to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. Bringing in groups and individuals from around the country, “the emphasis of this year will be on the cross-pollination of ideas, actions and initiatives to support and accelerate change from the grassroots up” Monique Kelly, Program Director says.. Arts+Culture Writing poetry for a world gone to sh*t By Bethany Rogers

Poetry gets a bad rap these days. When I ask friends what they think about poetry, they tell me stories of being forced to recite Shakespearian love sonnets at school, or they say they ‘don’t understand’ poetry at all. It’s a great shame, because poetry is far more accessible and enjoyable than some of the rubbish we’re taught at school. Poetry as an art form predates written text. It was created to remember genealogy, important events and law. The rhythm and rhyme of the poems made them easier to remember and recite. Poetry was a form of remembering and processing the best, the worst and the most important bits of our history. One of the earliest poems written in English is the Dream of the Rood. It’s thought to be from the 8th Century and is written in Old English. It’s a dream poem that follows the thoughts of a tree that’s cut down and made into a cross for Jesus. In it, the writer tries to process and record what they think is the best, the worst and the most important bits of information. Many centuries later, contemporary writers still love to use poetry to process the important things in life. One of my favourite poetry books is Poems for a World Gone to Sh*t (Quercus Editions Ltd, 2018). It (ironically) starts with a quote from one of Oscar Wilde’s plays: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars” and goes on to present a huge range of poetry from across the ages, showing sh*t times, good times and important ideas to remember. In John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Satan says: “The mind is its own place, And in itself can make a heaven of a hell, A hell of a heaven.” Here, Satan is trying to make himself feel better about living in a pit of fire. See? Even Satan uses poetry to cheer himself up and remember what is important in life (or afterlife).

How to write poetry when you’re feeling a bit sh*t One of the best things about poetry (and something I think is drilled out of us in school), is that there are many rules and there are no rules. Poetry is simply the expression of thoughts and feelings through style and rhythm. Poetry doesn’t have to rhyme. It doesn’t have to be a Sonnet or a Villanelle or a Haiku. You can write reams of it and you don’t have to show a soul. You don’t even have to write it down – you can compose and remember it all in your head, if that’s what you’d like to do. Or, you can follow all of the rules of a poetic form and explore what you can do within its parameters.

Creating poetry, especially if you take the time to edit and polish the poem until you’re happy with it, can be a cathartic and fun experience. Here’s four easy ways to get started: The list – Already have an idea for a poem? Great. Start by listing thoughts, ideas and phrases that you like. Keep listing, rearranging the lines and adding more to your list until you have a version you’re happy with. The dream – The Dream of the Rood is known as a ‘dream poem’ because it describes a dream. This doesn’t have to be boring. Record ideas, feelings and images from your dreams as you wake up. Is there anything there that could trigger a poem? The music – Put your favourite music on and pull out phrases, ideas, words, sounds and rhythms that ‘speak’ to you. What’s the story behind that piece of music? Could this be an idea for a poem? The black out poem – Grab the Lakes Weekly Bulletin (or another magazine) and highlight words or phrases to create a poem or poetic phrase that runs across the page. ‘Black out’ the rest of the text so that you can read your ‘found poem’ more easily. You can get creative when you ‘black out’ the unwanted text to create illustrations or patterns.

New Zealanders haven’t been scanning in enough, and that contributed to the need for a full lockdown

Fast isolation of infected individuals is key to containing any outbreak of COVID-19, including the Delta variant, and contact tracing is a critical part of this process. Since the first case was confirmed on Tuesday, six more people have tested positive, including a fully vaccinated health worker at Auckland City Hospital and a teacher at Avondale college. Genome sequencing has also confirmed that the original infection is linked with the Delta outbreak in New South Wales. The first case was using the NZ COVID Tracer app, which has helped to keep track of where he had been during the five days he is thought to have been infectious. But unfortunately, we know from national statistics that the majority of New Zealanders have not been scanning enough. Over the last month, we’ve seen 500,000-700,000 QR code scans and manual entries on any given day, coming from 300,000-400,000 active users. This equates to just under 10% of the adult population in New Zealand.

In the unfortunate event that you or someone you have interacted with gets COVID-19, those records could make the difference between a small number of cases and the hundreds of daily cases we’re seeing in parts of Australia. If you can’t or don’t want to use NZ COVID Tracer, it’s fine to use Rippl, or to keep your own written records. Even when we get out of lockdown again, it is likely the virus will still be in New Zealand and we will need to be able to respond quickly to further cases. When the government is making the decision on whether to lock the country down or not, one of the key pieces of information is whether they have confidence they could isolate the right people quickly enough. If we don’t have enough contact tracing information, we have little choice but to isolate everyone through a lockdown. It’s not the only factor that plays into that decision, but it is an important one.

Data privacy

Epidemiological modelling shows we need at least 60% of the population participating in digital contact tracing, and ideally 80%, to have confidence there will be sufficient information to control any outbreak, anywhere in the country.

The NZ COVID Tracer app is designed to support contact tracing efforts, by making it easy for individuals to keep track of where they have been and who they have been near, whether that is through scanning QR codes, adding manual entries, or turning Bluetooth Tracing on.

This has contributed to the decision to place the whole country in a level 4 lockdown, because the government does not have confidence that we, as a country, have enough information to support rapid contact tracing.

This is so that if you get COVID-19, then you can provide that information in a format that is easy to understand for the contact tracers, and saves time. It also means that the Ministry of Health can send contact tracing locations of interest and relevant Bluetooth ID numbers to your device, which are then checked against the diary on your device so that you can be alerted as quickly as possible.

We have been a long way from the target level of participation, but it’s not too late to add manual entries into the app to help speed up the process now as we try to get the spread under control.

Speed of contact tracing is essential On the positive side, about 1.5 million devices are using the Bluetooth Tracing function, which equates to just under 40% of all adults. But the Bluetooth system is limited in its usefulness for digital contact tracing because it has a higher likelihood of error and provides less information to the Ministry of Health. It’s complementary to the QR codes and manual entries, not a replacement. We need to be keeping records of where we have been before cases appear in the community, but now that there is an outbreak, it becomes even more important that we have those records.

Using the tracer app saves time for contact tracers

It’s important to note that the government only gets to see the data if you test positive for COVID-19 and provide the data voluntarily — you can review the privacy impact assessment for more details. If you haven’t used NZ COVID Tracer in a while, it’s worth updating the app and seeing the new features. The Ministry of Health has been updating it regularly and it now contains a lot more information, and it is easier to enter manual entries. The fight against COVID-19 is a marathon, not a sprint. We need to build up and maintain all the good habits: washing hands, wearing masks, physically distancing where possible, and collecting information to support contact tracing. If we can keep it up, then we might have more confidence about our ability to respond to cases in the future. TECHNOLOGY ELECTRIC UTES Will they get here in time? The Government has announced the ‘Ute tax’ as a component of our next steps to curbing greenhouse gases. The idea being to tax some petrol and diesel vehicles to incentivise, read subsidise the purchase of electric or low emissions vehicles. This has infuriated a section of the public with one of the arguments being that electric Utes and trucks don’t exist in any meaningful way so where are we on the big issue of electric trucks and Utes. The major obstacles facing the low emissions auto industry especially for larger vehicles has been one of pricing and battery technology not to mention there isn’t a national network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations capable of keeping the next generation of long-haul trucks on the road. Despite this, we can expect to see in the next 3-5 years more electric vehicles driving alongside or even replacing the diesel - and gas - powered Utes, trucks and vans that carry goods around the country.

Trucks Electric trucks do exist and many more are on the way. Daimler, the German auto manufacturer is also the largest truck manufacturer in the world and has announced an all-electric 18-wheeler, the Freightliner eCascadia which is expected to go into production later this year. No surprise but Tesla, the company is also a leader in bringing all electric, heavy duty semis to the market. Tesla announced its first model the Tesla Semi back in 2017 with the production date being pushed back several times from 2019 to now to 2022, with supply chain issues and a battery cell shortage as the causes of the delay. Once it gets to production it’s expected to have an 800 km range. Volvo is also investing heavily in the electric truck technology and has several models already on the road. These are some of the brands we recognise and there are brands that aren’t so familiar in Aotearoa. Rivian made headlines when Amazon announced plans to purchase 100,000 of their all-electric small trucks to deliver its packages around the towns and cities throughout the US. Rivian is a US company, with only 10 years of experience, and hasn’t produced an EV for the mass market yet. However, it is in the final stages of testing its electric pickup truck, that Amazon ordered and expects to have 10,000 of them on the road by 2022, with a ramp up from there to 100,000 electric delivery trucks in service by 2023. Rivian also has a super Ute that’s already confirmed for 2022 pre-order in Australia, so this is likely to reach across the Tasman and be available in NZ sometime after that. The Rivian R1T pick-up truck and R1S SUV will go on sale in the US later this year. Not to be outdone, GMC Hummer will also have an all-electric Ute available next year as will Ford. While there is no word on when these and other models will make it to New Zealand, its fairly obvious that the timeline the Government has laid while very optimistic its overall objective is achievable in the longer term. The technology is there, and the manufacturers are increasingly introducing new all electric models SUV’s Utes and trucks.
