We’ve been in a climate emergency for 40 years, but now we can’t pretend it is not happening any more! In June 2019 Extinction Rebellion and other community groups made our council declare a climate and ecological emergency. The following year, our government did the same. Not many people took the term emergency seriously though, not even the council nor the government. To this day our emissions are still rising. But in 2021 there is no more avoiding the Climate Crisis. Ohau burning down to the ground was just a prelude to communities being wiped out of existence in Canada, in Greece, in California, in Turkey or in Siberia. The floods that afflicted Ashburton and Westport were a just reminder from mother nature that we are not much safer here than others are in Germany, Belgium, India or China. Last week, the IPCC released its latest report, it is grim. What we have been experiencing this year will be the new normal from now on. And if we don’t start to radically cut our greenhouse gas emissions, it will become far worse. What we really need to understand is that, beyond the damages on lives and infrastructure, all these extreme weather events are affecting our food security. How many droughts and floods can our farmers go through before food starts to become scarce?

Some countries are already affected by climate induced famine today, what will the world geopolitics look like when food scarcity becomes a worldwide issue? We are today at 1.2°c of warming, it is now unavoidable that we will reach 1.5°c of warming this decade. If we don’t act 2°c will happen within 20 years. Living through 1.5°c of warming will be hard, but if we get close from 2°c of warming we will be at a real risk of witnessing the collapse of our civilisation. Today is our last chance to act radically enough to avoid 2°c of warming and it will not happen just by magic. We need a collective change of mindset, we need to start questioning the impact of everything we do, of everything we buy. Don’t worry about the ute tax, no one should buy a new petrol vehicle ever again! But even the small things matter, the energy we use at home, the packaging around our food, the stuffs we buy but don’t really use,...

Queenstown looks to 2022 by Payl Taylor
There is light at the end of the tunnel for Queenstown’s tourismdependent businesses after almost 18 months of trauma.
“So businesses can say, the rest of this year I might lose another $400,000 but after that we will move forward in a very good position.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern last week outlined the next steps in reconnecting New Zealand to the rest of the world, including the progressive, risk-based opening of borders early next year.
“I speak to my agents in the US and China, in the high end of the market, and they say ‘Mark, you open that border and we will fill your hotel for the next two years’.”
That’s been welcomed by activities operators, accommodation providers and hospitality outlets, facing a bleak few months now the trans-Tasman bubble has popped.
Like Stokes, he’s calling on the population of Queenstown to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Ruth Stokes says: “It’s great to have a very structured path forward.
“We’ve dodged a lot of bullets so far.”
That’s a sentiment shared by Queenstown mayor Jim Boult, who praised the government’s “agile strategy”. “There’s nothing businesses hate more than uncertainty, expect potentially level four lockdowns. “The Government will test the potential for new MIQ pathways with business travel from October to December, so they can iron it out for the broader population. “It gives us a good platform for 2022 to move into more tourism related travel.” Stokes says about 150 members attended last Thursday’s ‘B after 5’ event at Skyline, and most were positive about the future, although the closure of quarantine-free travel with Australia had made things tough again. The Chamber and Lakes Weekly Bulletin business confidence survey back in February revealed a third of downtown businesses feared they would go under. “It was really dark in February. We’ve come back from that and people are looking to the horizon now. The support domestically has been huge, we’re way up on our domestic tourism, and town is still pretty busy.”
“While I don’t expect that will open the flood gates for international visitors it will provide a steady pathway towards recovery of the tourism industry and continue to benefit our wider economy,” Boult says. But the underlying message was that all Kiwis that can get vaccinated need to do so. “By being vaccinated we not only protect ourselves but we are showing our care for our families and communities (especially those unable to be vaccinated for health reasons), our businesses and economy and our allimportant health service workers. “I very much encourage employers to assist staff in making time available to ensure widespread vaccination happens and to do all that we can to avoid additional lockdowns. This includes encouraging scanning of QR codes, allowing staff to work from home and to have adequate time off when they’re sick. “The government has confirmed that the vaccination roll out will soon be ramped up to get everyone protected by December. Let’s all do our part in making that happen.”
It’s still a tough “rollercoaster” year, though, and many are hoping for positive news when the trans-Tasman bubble is reviewed in mid-September, before the Australian school holidays. “Accommodation in particular took a real hit,” Stokes says. The Rees Hotel boss Mark Rose says had he known last April what he knows now, he’d have closed the hotel. Instead, it remained open, employing 70 staff, paying at least the living wage, before taking on 20 more in mid-June, about a week before the bubble popped. When it did, The Rees lost 60% of its business for August and September, and about 50% for July. “It’s been horrific,” Rose says. “We’re quite focused on inbound, so the Australian market is important to us. “The past 10 or 12 years I’ve travelled 160 days around the world, ensuring that we had a broad base of markets, so that if China or somewhere closed, I wouldn’t be held over the fire. “But I never thought about all markets closing.” Still, Rose says since the hotel opened 12 years ago, he’s had 11 fabulous years economically, eight of them “absolutely fabulous” and just one where it’s lost money, due to Covid. “What’s really nice is that there is a plan. I’m not blaming the Government for the last year, but now we can see a plan and that they are thinking it through.

National has produced a blueprint for immigration as my office continues to be contacted by constituents with a range of frustrations. Some of those concerns include cases of skilled migrant workers being unable to stay in New Zealand or gain residency after making strong contributions to our communities. Queenstown is among the regions losing the skilled migrants it desperately needs. These are people who moved to New Zealand before last year’s national lockdown with the promise there would be a pathway to residency for them and their families. National’s approach would see New Zealand’s current residency backlog completely cleared, as well as a clear pathway established for skilled migrants already here to gain residency. New Zealand’s backlog of residency applications is the longest in our country’s history and we also have record wait times for getting residence visas processed. Among those affected are doctors, engineers, construction workers and teachers. Some have been forced to leave New Zealand while others choose to find futures in other countries because they have no certainty around when they can become a resident. The timing could not be worse, New Zealand has record-low unemployment and the biggest labour shortage in 40 years. Sectors like healthcare, construction and education are facing critical labour shortages. This week National’s Building and Construction Spokesman Tim van de Molen and I will meet with a number of businesses and business leaders in the Queenstown and Central Otago construction industry. Worker shortages are sure to be a big topic of discussion. Among those who have not been able to secure New Zealand residency are migrants who have stuck with our country through COVID and our lockdowns and have contributed positively to our economy and our communities. National is proposing these people become eligible for a new ‘Covid Contribution Visa’, This would give around 35,000 essential skills workers and their families a three-year work visa to allow them to work towards residency. National also proposes linking working visas to a sector or region, rather than to a specific employer as they are now. Many migrants have been forced out of New Zealand because of technicalities just like this. As I have written about extensively recently, I have fielded many inquiries about a range of immigration issues. Concerns about MIQ utilisation, availability and its booking system have been widespread. I have outlined frustrations with the inability to book MIQ rooms with the Government’s border control in a letter to Minister of Immigration Kris Faafoi and Minister of COVID-19 Response Chris Hipkins last week. The closure of the Trans-Tasman bubble means we need to make every room to count so that New Zealanders can return to their homeland, their jobs and their families as quickly as possible. Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer. This year marks 31 years of Daffodil Day in New Zealand. That’s 31 years of our communities coming together to raise much-needed funds to support people facing cancer.
Just a reminder to everyone from the club that our AGM is being held next Tuesday the 24th August at The Crown in Frankton at 6pm. We’d love to see as many of our members there as can make it.
Daffodils have been symbolically linked to the fight against cancer for many years. Daffodil Day is a day when we’re reminded of the value the Cancer Society adds to the community, and it’s a day for everyone to support this vital cause. Cancer Society Otago-Southland Chief Executive Rachael Hart said, “Cancer doesn’t stop, and with your help, we won’t either. Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 31 years, New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and we need your help again this year.” Every day the Cancer Society provides expert information services, counselling, nutritious meals, accommodation near hospitals, transport to treatment and much more. Your donation helps fund these cancer support services for people in our community, providing practical and meaningful assistance during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Right now, Cancer Society staff and volunteers are preparing for New Zealand’s largest fundraising street appeal: Daffodil Day on Friday 27 August. Donations also helps to reduce the incidence of cancer. The Cancer Society’s Health Promotion Team leads positive change through innovative projects to reduce smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, and deliver SunSmart Education programs in the community. “Your support this Daffodil Day will make a direct and positive difference in the life of someone facing a cancer diagnosis,” says Rachael Hart, Chief Executive of the Cancer Society, Otago and Southland Division. ANZ has been a major sponsor of the Cancer Society since 1990 and each year ANZ staff get involved in fundraising activities that fund services and support New Zealanders with cancer. QLDC Representation Review submissions have closed What happens now? The QLDC Representation Review is considering a number of elements to how representation on council is made up in the future. These include how many Councillors are required, geographical boundaries of wards, names of wards, identifying communities of interest, and if community boards should be established or retained. QLDC received 301 submissions on the Representation Review which closed August 6th. From here, QLDC will collate the submissions for the Councillors to consider, and there will be two hearings, one in Queenstown on Thursday 26 August, and one in Wānaka on Friday, 27 August. The hearings are open to the public but only submitters may speak at these hearings. The Council will consider whether to retain the original proposal or to change it, with a decision expected to be made at the Full Council meeting on 16 September. Following that, there will be a one-month period of appeals and/or objections.

Neon green drama for Queenstown Creek by Payl Taylor
An investigation is underway after a water in a Queenstown creek and the shallows of Lake Wakatipu turned neon green on Sunday afternoon. The water was coloured bright green all the way along Horne Creek, which runs through the town centre and discharges into the lake by the playground, near the Bathhouse and Queenstown Gardens.

It helps to be quick and rich when buying a home in Queenstown Lakes District. Last month, the median number of days residential properties were on the market fell to just 44 days. And the median sales price remains over $1 million, according to the latest stats from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, with even houses over $3m being snapped up. Gail Hudson, REINZ Regional Director, says: “Sales volumes have remained strong in the Queenstown-Lakes district through the winter months and activity is expected to remain steady into spring. “Interest from out-of-town purchasers has remained high, particularly from Auckland and Christchurch. “Low levels of new listings are coming to the market, resulting in low levels of overall inventory, placing pressure on the market.” There were 86 sales in July, down from 113 the month before. About 150 residential properties are available on Real Estate NZ, but that includes some sections and holiday apartments. Median days to sell down fell 8 days annually from 52 days in July 2020 to 44 days in July 2021. REINZ’s million dollar property report, released last week, showed the number of properties selling for more than $3 million across Otago: increased by 200% in the first six months of the year, from 12 to 36 properties.

Further Queenstown detail, published by the Otago Daily Times, showed 26 of those were in Queenstown, including the most expensive, an $8.3 million sale in Man St.
A Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesperson said contractor Veolia found the source and taken samples back for testing.
“If anyone has any information about this, we encourage them to contact the QLDC customer services team as soon as possible.” Many comments online attribute the colour to a stormwater tracing dye, which is safe and non-toxic, and is used to chart the course of stormwater. It is not known whether that could be related to QLDC’s own project to install a new wastewater pipe through the town centre, which begins at the other end of the Recreation Ground from the library and is nearing completion. This week contractors will close the Ballarat Street / Camp Street intersection for a couple of hours so the team can complete some repairs on the road.

“Welcome 2 America,” a new album by Prince is launched five years after his death Prince died in 2016 but his new album has just been released and reviews are that it’s so “Good It May As Well Have Been Recorded Today”. According to Bloomberg “Welcome 2 America” is the first complete, previously unreleased record to come out since Prince died in 2016. And it’s a stunner. They go on to say, “Welcome 2 America” manages to be as relevant, or maybe even more relevant, today than when it was recorded, and promptly shelved, in 2010. Most of the songs have been unheard until now”. Confronting themes of racial justice, equality, big tech and just what it means to be human, “Welcome 2 America” feels like the soundtrack for the years since Prince’s untimely death. Dolly Parton is writing her first novel with James Patterson Dolly Parton and thriller author James Patterson are releasing a collaborative novel together next year. The novel called Run, Rose, Run will be published in March 2022, along with a new Dolly Parton album whose 12 new songs were inspired by the book. James Patterson and Dolly Parton have been working on the book, loosely based around a young singer with a dark secret that inspires her music, and draws on Parton’s experiences in country music, since February 2020. James Patterson is best known for his Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women’s Murder Club series of books. Run, Rose, Run, will be published in print, e-book and audio editions. Dolly will release an album, also titled Run, Rose, Run with the songs based around the characters and situations in the book.
Timor-Leste detects first domestic transmission of COVID-19 Delta variant Timor-Leste or East Timor has recorded its first case of community transmission of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, raising concerns by its Health Ministry about a possible spike. The Timor-Leste Health Ministry in its August 8 report said Delta variant transmission “is likely to cause a significant increase in case numbers, including severe cases and deaths,” with those with limited vaccine access most at risk. Home to 1.3 million people, the South-East Asian nation has recorded just 11,579 cases and 28 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Only about 8.5 per cent of the population have been fully inoculated so far, using the vaccines of AstraZeneca and Sinovac. ABC
Namibia sells 57 live elephants amid outcry from conservationists Namibia has sold off 57 live elephants at an auction which it said was aimed at reducing populations in areas affected by drought and conflict with humans. The number represented just a third of the total of 170 elephants the African nation had hoped to sell, according to the environment ministry. The sale raised 5.9 million Namibian dollars ($537,000) and 42 of those pachyderms will be exported to international destinations that the government did not disclose. The other 15 will remain in Namibia but under private ownership. Namibia says the auction helped it strike a balance between the conservation of elephants and management of the risks they pose when they encroach onto land used by humans. Business Confidence The Queenstown Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Ignite Wanaka, and supported by QLDC, DQ and LWB is encouraging local businesses to participate in the third of the quarterly Business Confidence Surveys. The aim is to provide greater insight into the health of the local economy and provide a gauge of business confidence across the district which enables the Chambers of Commerce, Destination Queenstown, Lake Wanaka Tourism and QLDC to collectively advocate for and support the Southern Lakes businesses. This is the third of the quarterly surveys which will enable us to tell a story across the year, from the initial data collected back in February. The more data collected enables trends to be tracked and support future decisions based on the data collected over time.
The survey is short, just 2-3 minutes to complete, and the results will be released once analysed. We encourage one response per business and suggest business owners or senior managers complete the survey on behalf of the business. Everyone wins when you become a Happiness House volunteer by Gillian White, Volunteer South - Central Lakes Manager
Designed to create conditions that add joy to its visitors’ lives, Happiness House does the same for its diverse range of volunteers. Hailing from all over the world, driven by various motivations, and bringing different talents to the cause, the Happiness House volunteers that I spoke with all share the same smile in their voice and admiration for the work that this organisation is doing in the community. Happiness House assists those in need in the Wakatipu area through a range of support and advocacy services, affordable pre-loved clothing and homewares, and activities including workshops, crafts, play groups or simply company over a cuppa. I had a chance to speak with three of their enthusiastic volunteers and walked away with a new sense of appreciation for the heart of their mission. Holding true to the cliché that it’s hard to meet anyone born in Queenstown, Yurie Shinkai is originally from Nagasaki, Japan, Cecilia Perillo moved here from Uruguay, and Laura Todoni grew up in Patagonia, Argentina. All now call Queenstown home after falling in love with the area and living here for several years. As you would expect, they all enjoy spending time in the outdoor paradise that surrounds them, snowboarding, walking, mountain-biking or gardening. They also share the same desire to give something back to this special community. While all three had heard of Happiness House, they became involved via quite different routes. Yurie, was temporarily out of work due to COVID border closures, and had time on her hands and was recommended by a friend to give it a try. She now regularly spends her Fridays welcoming visitors and distributing food on busy Produce Day, when people who are struggling are provided with food donated by local businesses. Hoping to use her trilingual skills (English, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish) to assist others, Cecilia searched for volunteer opportunities in Queenstown. Upon learning the mission of Happiness House, she signed on with an open mind to do whatever would help. Since that changes all the time, you might find her making soup, helping out in the resource room, participating in the winter sales of outdoor gear, handing out bags on Produce Day or quietly providing a chance for someone to talk. Laura on the other hand has a passion to minimize food waste while working in event management. She contacted Happiness House to see if they would be interested in taking leftovers. They knew a gem when they saw one and asked if she would like to teach a workshop on how to cook nutritional foods on a budget. That soon led to working in the garden and then joining onto the roster where the ideas she brings are readily welcomed by the staff. Indeed, raving about the staff, the other volunteers, the learning opportunities and the vibe of Happiness House is a common theme these three return to again and again. Laura shares: “I admire the project, the idea and the philosophy behind Happiness House. The support they provide is more than food and clothes; it is emotional, social and psychological. Every person involved is giving something special. For me, it’s a chance to interact with people from a lot of cultures and backgrounds and a chance to learn to give 100% to any person I meet there.” “The staff are lovely and I’m learning from them how best to interact with people in need. It’s a place where everyone is treated equally” says Yurie. “With all our different backgrounds, the team motivates each other and a shared goal draws us together. Helping people motivates me.”
“I love my Fridays and Wednesdays and Happiness House is a beautiful place where I really want to go,” shares Cecilia. “The staff care about their volunteers and show appreciation all the time, while providing a lift when they see someone is feeling low. It’s a happy environment filled with kind and helpful people and offers a wonderful chance to make connections. I now know much more about the wider Queenstown community, and feel more a part of it, due to my involvement.” I asked then, naturally, for advice about volunteering? Laura’s answer is immediate: “Go and enjoy. What are you waiting for? You feel amazing when you do something for someone without expecting anything in return.” Cecilia emphasizes giving back to the community, with the altruistic reward as an extra bonus: “We all have something to offer. Our time, a skill, a pair of hands or ears. And we all need each other as a part of the society.” Worried about taking on a big commitment? Yurie advises: “Volunteering is easier to fit into your life than you might think. In the past, I used my job as an excuse that I was too busy to volunteer. Now I see that isn’t true. You can be a part of the local community and help someone even when working a full time job.” Laura couldn’t agree more: “You don’t even have to commit to going every week. You can approach the staff with an idea or a one-time project like leading a plastic-free workshop, teaching a dance class for kids or baking cookies.” Happiness House is keen to utilise the skills of any interested volunteers to enhance the open, warm, friendly and confidential environment that their support centre provides. A bit of sauce for a good cause Men’s calendar draws attention to men’s mental health By Lauren Prebble
It was last year when Lucy Jaine’s long-term partner, Sharn, suggested she put together a calendar to raise money for men’s mental health. ‘It was totally out of the blue’ says Lucy.
She’s getting back down to the bare essentials but this time with 11 other strong-willed women to direct people’s attention to talk about men’s mental health once again. Lucy’s determined to promote the message to ‘treat your man with love and respect’ and wanted to broaden the offering this year to profile ‘strong women supporting strong men’. To achieve this an open application appeal was sent through her social forums and garnered interest from girls all over the country. “There’s a spear fisher, a surfer, a butcher who’s killing it... literally” jokes Lucy. Among those featured next year includes skilled Queenstown Barber Kate McKenzie. The 2022 calendar will promote a secondary message of women ‘smashing it’ in their male-dominated profession. The 2022 calendar has all the applicable hunting events marked like the roar and fishing events. The compilation of this calendar is entirely voluntary based. Lucy hopes that a year’s worth of planning will result in more calendar sales. “It’s not about money, but then again, is it?” affirms Lucy “because I want to give as much as I can to Will to Live.” Images of the new calendar have been hidden from the public (for now), but a sneak peek might be on offer when pre-orders open on the 17th of September through huntinglucyjaine.co.nz Wild pig caught in the Catlins
In 4 weeks, they scurried to put together a 2021 men’s calendar with Lucy modelling for each month to appeal to the hunter gatherer. Around $2,500 was raised for the Will to Live Foundation, a charity which provides channels and safe spaces for farmers to talk about their vulnerability. Founder of the charity, Elle Perriam, was a personal friend of Lucy’s and she had lost her partner to suicide in 2017. “The suicide rate is so high” says Lucy as she listed the personal contacts who have been “lost to suicide”. “Wanaka huntress” found internet glory last year, when she got snapped with a bore on the back, in only her bras and knickers.

Arts+Culture Striking new textile art exhibition

Award-winning emerging artist Wesley John Fourie has curated a one-of-akind textile art exhibition at Broker Gallery. The striking collection of artworks are created by a diverse range of emerging, established and mid-career artists, never seen in Queenstown before. All of the artists are female or non-binary and New Zealand based.
Workshops for young writers By Bethany Rogers
Together with the Central Lakes Arts Support Scheme, Queenstown Writers Festival is supporting two creative writing workshops for young writers to be held on 21st and 22nd August 2021. The workshops will teach writers in school years 7 and 8 and years 5 and 6 ‘how to trap a tiny tale and tame it’. The workshops are run by internationally recognised writer and teacher Heather McQuillian.
Wesley John Fourie is represented by Broker and is best known for their towering knitted mountains.
Heather is a three-time Storylines Notable Books Award winner for her middle grade fiction, and has just completed six months as the University of Otago College of Education/ Creative New Zealand Children’s Writer in Residence. Her most recent books are Where Oceans Meet and other stories (Reflex Press, UK, 2019) and Avis and the Promise of Dragons (Cuba Press, NZ, 2019). Tickets are available via Eventfinda, with the session for years 5 and 6 students already sold out.
Southern Soul Annual Concert - “You Will Be Found” By Southern Soul
Southern Soul present an evening of traditional and contemporary choral music with Lizzie Green on Piano and Katie Bridges on Harp.
“I used to work on the Milford Track; my practice is informed by the mountains and geography there. My four years on the track were quite formative for me,” they explain. Fourie began exploring textiles with a piece called ‘Daddy Issues’ – a denim jacket with lace sleeves and sewn-on hair extensions across the back. They say working with textiles offers a unique “sense of playfulness” that other art materials don’t. “I like things that you can touch and I’m interested in tactility in art. I like to play with textures and you’ll see a lot of my work is textural. I create to-scale models of mountains with knitting.” The show, called ‘All is Full of Love’ includes artists Hana Pera Aoake, Alice Alva and Katherine Claypole. The artists are mentors and friends of Fourie’s, “so I feel very connected to these artworks; I feel very lucky,” Fourie adds. “The artworks all fall under the umbrella of ‘textiles’. Everything is fibrebased. “It’s a diverse range of practices: there’s a print-maker, installation art, some knitting, embroidery and paper-making. It’s eclectic, but all of the pieces work very well together.” ‘All is Full of Love’ opened Friday 13th August and is on now at Broker Gallery (85 Beach Street, Queenstown).

Originally formed in 2019, Southern Soul are a Queenstown based choir comprised of local musicians and vocalists. Our prior performances have included appearances for local events and fundraisers so it’s wonderful to be putting on our first concert where we can showcase our diverse material and the talents of all our members. We hope that there will be something for everyone, songs from artists such as Queen, Lorde, John Legend as well as some musical theatre and traditional choral pieces. We are very pleased to be joined by the Japanese Community Choir. A donation will be made to the Japanese Family Centre. RAW Comedy Quest 2021 - Lower South Island Final In the search for NZ’s best new comedian it’s time to get serious! Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association Update Last Wednesday, 11 August the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA) held its AGM. The APBA’s purpose is to promote, advocate and protect the heritage and natural character of Arrowtown, while supporting economic growth, sustainability and kaitiakitanga. The AGM was a chance for the APBA to update its members on all the things that have happened over the past year, while also acting as the forum for the election of the board, Chair, Deputy Chair and Treasurer. The event was very well attended, with guest speakers Mayor Jim Boult and Chamber of Commerce Chair Angela Spackman.

APBA Chairman, Jimmy Sygrove and Manager Nicky Busst gave updates about the APBA’s activities over the past twelve months and how Arrowtown is faring in the face of the challenges presented by Covid19. Highlights included stats showing that while still significantly impacted by the shutdown in international tourism, Arrowtown is one of the only tourism destinations in the country that is seeing growth in spending. Figures recently released by spending data provider Marketview for the last 12 months showed Arrowtown increased spending growth by 9.2% between 1 July 2020 to 30th June 21. This is a testament to the tenacity of the Arrowtown business community and the town’s authentic offering that complements its spectacular natural setting and rich heritage.

In a significant development this year, APBA’s previous manager, Sue Patterson, stepped down after a decade in the role. Sue had done a sterling job in helping bring the APBA up to speed and left the organisation in a much better place than when she found it.

Stepping in, as the new manager of the APBA is Nicky Busst. Since taking over in March Nicky has time and again proved herself to be an absolute asset to both the APBA as an organisation, and to Arrowtown on the whole. The ABPA was delighted to see QLDC’s recommended approach to the district’ representation review changed to include the retention of the Arrowtown Ward and Councillor. It is APBA’s firm position that Arrowtown presents a unique offering. It is a special place, and it has a unique character and qualities that need someone looking out for them at Council. The AGM attendees voted that the profits from this year’s Arrowtown Long Lunch will be donated to the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, approximately $10K Finally, the board was unanimously re-elected with two new members – Shelley Rhodes and Lily Barnes. Jimmy Sygrove was re-elected as Chairman, as was Deputy Chair, Nicky Fifield and Treasurer Bruce Gibbs.

Finding a flat has all of the relative similarities to finding a job. You have to create an appealing profile, write a passionate cover letter, put on your best act at the interview to show a little hint of yourself but not too much. Play into the hearts and minds of the landlord or rental agent, to ultimately secure the lease and sign on the dotted line before you can relax into your trackpants and show your true ugly self. Ultimately first impressions count, and this has only intensified with life handled mostly online. Our community social forums have become subject to an onslaught of flatmate applications for the general public to deliberate in a supercilious manner. “Hi, I’m Tiffany, I’m looking for a room. I’m super relaxed, fun, nonparty type. “ Each candidate carefully crafting their least offensive profile to secure room worthy results. The attachment to the post shows a glammed-up nightclubbing photo. Notice she’s holding a Smirnoff can too. ((Suss)). You scroll and see the cutesy hetero couple from elsewhere plotting their move to Queenstown “Hi we’re Marco and Valerie, 31 and 29 looking for single flat unit for 5 months”. The happy couple shot suggests they might be down to earth but a closer look of the photo gives you an underlying feeling that they would bicker and divide the food. Public profiles are open to private scrutiny. That’s the unfortunate human truth of it. This model of seeking a room online is akin to a random frisbee throw of your profile which can land you in an environment of strangers. Sometimes it can work but it’s the luck of the draw. You know the old saying ‘It’s not what you know it’s who you know’ I feel this ‘job quote’ also applies to the rental market. Before you put your face out for all the world to judge, draw on your connections. Talk to your family, friends, or work colleague. They might have an obscure friend of friends that’s in the market for a flattie or know someone. They can act as your referee and a mutual talking point when it comes to breaking the ice. You don’t have to enter into the online flatmate talent quest if you’re not entirely comfortable with the idea. There are other avenues to explore. Just keep your ear to the ground and peddle your environments.

NURSES NEED TO BE PAID MORE by Nikki Hurst, Executive Officer, New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services
Nurses need to be paid more – all nurses, whoever funds them. Nurses need working conditions that are safe and supported – all nurses, whoever employs them. DHB nurses are currently fighting for what seems like a no-brainer – pay and conditions that respect and enhance the mana of their cohort. But what of nurses who aren’t directly employed by the DHB’s? Where does it leave them? Particularly those working in not-for-profit and community-based settings? Those that provide safety and services for our older people? The current NZ Nurses Organisation claim covers 30,000 registered nurses – but only those working for DHBs. Funding of better pay and conditions for the other 20,000 nurses not directly employed by the DHBs are not included. Minister Little was clear when interviewed by Mani Dunlop on RNZ’s Midday Report (6/8/21) that non-DHB nurses will need to wait two years. This is too long. The reality is, a two-year wait will see an increase in DHB nursing staff – at the cost of the nurses who work in your community, in not-for-profit settings, and most crucially, in residential aged care. Not-for-profit aged care providers have no other way to raise funds. Our nurses are effectively paid by the DHB, through funding that is passed on. But this increase won’t flow on. So our nurses will have to choose to leave us. And without our nurses, we will have to reduce the number of older people we care for in our services. We may even have to close our services in some communities. We need everyone in our communities to contact their local MPs and let them and Minister Little know that we want our nurses paid what they are worth, with conditions that match. ALL nurses. NOW.
