Winter Pride is going ahead even without the Aussies
Winter Pride, New Zealand’s biggest destination Pride Festival, is full steam ahead for launch on Friday 27 August for ten days and nights of festivities in Queenstown and Wanaka. Although the bursting of the Trans-Tasman travel bubble was hugely disappointing and gutting for our Australian visitors, we are opening our arms wide to welcome as many locals as possible. Winter Pride is one of the most significant events of the year for many of our guests and we are 100% going ahead. Last year was a domestic only season as well and in much more complicated circumstances. If we could do it then, we intend to do it even better in 2021.
Although originally sold out, tickets are now available to some events, so if you missed out originally be in quickly as they are being snapped up by Kiwis. The festival has a growing number of free community events, including ASB Pride in the Park, the new Woof event at Earnslaw Park, and a Pride Park Run. So come on down and support the community events with DJ’s, drag queens and other performers. And remember to get into theme and support by joining in with the Rollout the Rainbow celebrations – where everyone paints the town rainbow. Rainbow flags and info packs are available from local Westpac branches to help everyone get into the spirit of the festivities. Winter Pride loves the support of the broader community and seeing more and more people flying rainbow flags each year really shows how much Queenstown cares. Gridlock over Ladies Mile by Paul Taylor - editor
Queenstown’s councillors have given themselves another three months to thrash out a solution to the future of Ladies Mile. They met on Thursday to discuss the council’s own masterplan for the fields around State Highway 6, between Shotover Bridge and Lake Hayes. It is the council’s attempt to control development along Ladies Mile, knowing that landowners are pushing to build and could defeat the council in any Environment Court battle. But the high density of the masterplan - up to 2,400 apartments and houses, along with schools, shops, offices and community facilities - has enraged nearby residents in Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, who are already stuck in traffic most mornings. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult has said development can’t go ahead without traffic solutions.
Resident Debbie Townsend highlighted how difficult it is for families and tradies, living in a mountain ski town, to rely on public transport to get around. But, council worker Charlie Adams, speaking as a resident of Lake Hayes Estate, gave the other side of the debate. Despite having a $120,000 deposit saved, she can’t find a section to buy to build a house, and 10 of her friends are in a similar position. She is paying $780 a week in rent. “Queenstown is in the midst of another housing crisis, whether people like to admit it or not. And on Thursday, a majority of councillors agreed with him that implementation of the masterplan should be “dependent on an acceptable set of transport interventions being identified to minimise the impact” on the roads. Council staff will work with Waka Kotahi and Otago Regional Council on this. To counter any moves by landowners, they also directed that council staff investigate a “staged zoning approach”, which restricts development until certain triggers are met, such as workable transport solutions. They’ll report back to council in October on the feasibility and legal implications of that. Lake Hayes Estate resident Stuart Victor, in the public forum, said highdensity development along Ladies Mile will effectively cripple Queenstown. “It will cause stress, negatively affect the economy, people will miss flights, appointments, meetings and waste productive time,” he said. “It seems like an experiment or fingers-crossed attitude where you hope 15,000 people will take the bus each day. Can you honestly believe that?” Anita Golden, chair of the Lake Hayes and Shotover Country Community Association, pointed to last week’s traffic carnage when power lines closed the Shotover Bridge.
“It feels like we have a case of not in my back yard happening here. The masterplan gives council control of the development. If you turn this down, council will receive a private plan change in due course, which will go through the courts.” She said people need to change their habits with regards to transport. Adams was backed by councillor Glyn Lewers, who said in Spatial Plan Hearings he’d had young professionals stare at him “with anger and venom in their eyes, and ask ‘where’s my house?’” Lewers, deputy mayor Calum MacLeod and Arrowtown Cr Heath Copland, spoke in support of the masterplan. MacLeod said Auckland is “spending a million dollars a day” on transport and going backwards. The only solution is to get people out of their cars. “It needs decisive mode shift, every single piece of data tells us that, the climate can’t be ignored.” Several councillors, including Craig Ferguson and Niamh Shaw, spoke about the council’s apparent powerlessness against the Resource Management Act and Environment Court process. Shaw said she often thought before becoming a councillor: “Why can’t the council just stick to their guns? “But now I realise any decision has to be defensible under the RMA.
She said not once had residents been asked if the rural land should be rezoned and called for a full assessment and to consider development in more urban areas.
She said in this case “I think it’s pretty clear that we would not be successful” in the Environment Court.

Boult said his desire was to “find a way to effectively put some brakes on this until we have a solution to the traffic problems”, which were also caused by traffic from “Arrowtown, Wanaka and Cromwell”. Adopting the masterplan at this time, without restriction, “enables a smooth path” to making the problem worse. But, building another bridge and four-lane Ladies Mile, would just “push the traffic jam down the road a bit further”.

By Jonet Warhurst Naylor Love and the Cancer Society of New Zealand – Southland and Otago Division invites you to join them and do the Time Warp again at the Queenstown Memorial Event Centre and to get involved and help raise funds for people in the Central Otago community. Every day, 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. The Cancer Society Supportive Care services make such a positive contribution to people’s lives through improved physical, social and mental well-being to reduce anxiety and stress. Abi Barber who is helping on the committee this year says: “The Cancer Society Team were wonderful support for my partner Clint when he was going through treatment for his brain tumour. Being both from the UK, the Cancer Society were like family to us and for that we are incredibly grateful. These events are critical to help give support to people impacted by cancer... We are young, without children dependant on us, so we are doing what we can to help this valuable charity. Clint, a joiner and furniture maker of 16 years, is also making a high-end bespoke console table to be auctioned off at the event in a bid to raise further money” Tickets include refreshments and canapes on arrival, a delicious 3 course meal from local catering company In2Food, complimentary refreshments, followed by an evening of tantalising entertainment with an amazing show supported by Tom Tom Productions. What’s On Queenstown Jazz Orchestra: 10th Anniversary Representation Review Celebration Concert Submissions close this Friday 6th Aug The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra was formed in 2011 by a group of enthusiastic Jazz musicians residing in the Wakatipu area. Its aim was to attract Jazz musicians of all ages to form a large jazz orchestra and to encourage young musicians to participate in big band Jazz music. Over the years the band has seen many changes with both personnel and skills. All band members have extensive musical backgrounds and a number have been part of the music scene in Queenstown for many years. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary, the band have invited many of the musicians and vocalists who have been part of the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra over the past 10 years, to join us for a night of music, fun and celebration. Former members are coming from throughout the country. From the far north of Waiheke Island, to Marlborough, Blenheim, Dunedin, Wanaka and even Stewart Island. The 16-piece big band, which already features the region’s best jazz musicians and vocalists, will be bolstered by three or four players from the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. Delta is lurking, time to get vaccinated by David Gibbs
Last week I had my first jab and I’m now halfway to being fully vaccinated. I was very pleasantly surprised with the process, which worked smoothly and efficiently. I got my invitation by text and there were plenty of spots available at the medical centre almost immediately. As anyone who knows me will attest, I’ve not been a great fan of how long it’s taken for the authorities to get this far. We were kept in the dark and people rightly became very frustrated. I was sceptical about whether mass rollout would begin by July, but it has and I’m happy to say I was wrong.
The outbreak was a result of one driver who wasn’t vaccinated and wasn’t wearing a mask while carrying flight crew, one of whom was positive. Now it’s 200 new cases a day, a case count over 3,500 and hospitals filling up and rising. So too is the number of deaths. That could easily be us. We are so unprepared for a community case in NZ, we need to get as many people immunized as fast as possible, before our luck runs out! That means, at least 80% immunization to feel comfortable, and with just over a million people with the first dose in their arm, there is still a long way to go. Currently, the country is using 99.5% of the stocks being distributed which is good news. No doubt, the Government will respond quickly to any delta case arriving in the community, but I believe it will then become a story of the vaccinated vs the non-vaccinated. For the vaccinated, even in the rare cases where they contract Covid, there won’t be any issues. But the risk will be high for people in the unvaccinated age-brackets or areas, and especially for the immunedeficient. Delta is more infectious, spreads more quickly, and most people aren’t being as careful as they were originally. Again, look to our neighbour and the crazies marching in the street protesting their lack of freedom. The single best thing we can do as a country is get vaccinated and fast. I, for one, was delighted to get my first jab and I’m booked in at the first possible time to get my second. Once we reach 80% plus, we can look forward to really being the lucky country and start opening up to the world again.
However, without wanting to tempt fate, it now seems we’re in a race against time to get the population vaccinated. New Zealand has had extraordinary luck not to get any community cases of the delta variant, doubly so in our tourist town. Every time, I hear of a ship headed to port with crew who have tested positive, I get super concerned, just as the people of New Plymouth were recently when it was detected in their water. We’ve been living a life, much of the world can only envy, with total freedom of movement, no restriction on crowd sizes and mask-use limited to public transport and flights. Most of us have forgotten what a lockdown and social distancing is like, but the delta variant is a nasty bugger and loves to take advantage of any slip ups. You only need to look at NSW where case counts are rising, immunization numbers have been pathetically weak, and hospitals are filling up. Sydney is now in lockdown until the end of August.

Black Widow becomes first post pandemic movie to crack $200 million Disney’s latest movie from their Marvel Studios and first release in two years, Black Widow crossed the $200 million global threshold, just five days after its American release and eight days in international theaters. It’s been playing to NZ audiences since early July. With roughly 20% of cinemas in the U.S. remaining closed and international locations, including parts of Southeast Asia and Latin America, having closed again, this makes the achievement worth celebrating.
French parliament approves law requiring Covid pass for restaurants and travel starting in August The French parliament approved a bill last week requiring a health pass for access to French restaurants, bars, trains and planes from the beginning of August. President Emmanuel Macron and his government say the Health Pass is needed to protect vulnerable populations and hospitals as infections rebound and to avoid new lockdowns. The law requires all workers in the health care sector to start getting vaccinated by mid Sept, or risk suspension. It also requires a “health pass” to enter all restaurants, trains, planes and some other public venues. It initially applies to all adults but will then apply to everyone 12 and older by the end of Sept. France24.com
Singapore looking at introducing quarantine-free travel Singapore’s leaders expect travel to resume inside of two months, once the nation has 80% of its population vaccinated which they expect to be achieved by then and which will place the nation in a solid position to move forward with reopening. The country will also be able to start reopening borders and establishing travel corridors with other countries or regions that have infections under control. If Singapore hits its vaccination target, it could stake a claim as arguably the world’s best-vaccinated financial capital. Yes, vaping products are for 18+, but clearly under age kids are getting their hands on the products. Put the shop where it isn’t so accessible. Is the council policing the store to ensure it isn’t selling to students who are under age? Wake up council!

QLDC RESPONSE: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to respond. Whilst we can understand the concerns of your reader, QLDC has had no role in approving (or otherwise) the setting up of this vape shop. At the moment vaping falls outside any Council policy or bylaw. Commercial vaping businesses on private land can be set up like any other retail store and can be located anywhere they please. From November 2020, government legislation prohibited vaping at all times in schools and early childhood centres, including their grounds and buildings. The Health Promotion Agency also provides further advice to schools but doesn’t refer to issues with the sale of vaping products near schools: https://www.hpa. org.nz/programme/education/vaping The matter is made more challenging by some in the health sector actively promoting vaping as the best way for people to give up smoking. Councils such as Palmerston North and Christchurch have banned vaping in some areas, but haven’t gone as far as introducing bylaws related to shops selling such products. QLDC will continue to monitor its potential mandate regarding the issue of vaping and smoking around the district, and share any potential new or amended policies and bylaws with the community for feedback.

The problem is the way they are doing this is far from ideal as they have their cameras positioned where there is no signage meaning it is basically entrapment.

I was caught in Cardrona Valley Road having come from Golf Course Rd in Wanaka which is 70kph and I was going to the Medical Centre meaning I only drove in the Cardrona Valley Rd, which is 40km/h for less than a kilometre.

There was no speed limit signage where I got the ticket and that the NZ Road Code says we should assume 100kph in open roads without signage. Drivers should be made aware of this sort of entrapment that, if not illegal, should definitely be frowned upon so it doesn’t feel like they are just trying to boost their coffers rather than actually enforce the speed limits.

There is no going back to normality and I don’t think we should. Under the traditional model, Queenstown was feeding mass tourism, which got ugly. You know it’s bad when even the tourists were complaining about the number of tourists. Operators got complacent and yes greedy, wanting more bums on seats, raising prices to squeeze as much out of the holiday maker. Too many people! Our resident population got irritable! Our infrastructure choked! This linear line of tourism was not sustainable and we weren’t offering the best experience. Our district realises that the 2019 way of operating was showing cracks and was desperately trying to teach this old pony a new trick. For now, we rely on our domestic market. A market that has been contributing to our economy but has never been fully considered or appreciated. The kiwi, even though flightless, has always been one to travel. Their holiday excursion was normally abroad but options are limited so now they’re scratching in their own backyard. The buy local, support local, empower local has been bashed into our mentality and it seems the words are starting to hit through. We have our boomer market, with a house and a disposable income. They’re taking a campervan trip with Karen and Gavin and relishing the long road ahead. They’re drawn to the scenic location, a picnic setting with a bottle of blanc, can you provide something to add to the platter, perhaps? Our Auckland brethren who’d normally travel internationally have really stepped up. Some might say they’re filling the aussie void. They’re drawn to the finer things. High end retail shopping, family dining and adventure activities that double as day-care for their precious two children. How about teaming up with another business to offer a power package? The outer lying regions tend to be attracted to less crowds. They’ve always been curious to see what the hype was about with Queenstown and now they’re popping the southern jewel cherry for the first time. How many cherries can be popped in this scenario? Fush’n’chups, marmite, rugby and pavlova were icons from another era and may not be overly applicable to our new age Aotearoa. We’re forging towards a new future and a good business will adapt to the landscape as it changes. The challenge is to change. Not everybody likes it but it is evitable. That golden goose is well and truly cooked, so go out and catch a kiwi. It’ll sustain you.

Create a veggie garden that’s ready for spring Keen to start a Vege patch that will be ready for spring? This article has a few ideas on starting a veggie garden from scratch (or if you’re expanding an existing bed) so you hit spring with a bang (it’s not that far away!!). Come spring you will want to spend your time sowing seeds, planting seedlings, and making compost so now is the time to start planning and building. First up, decide where you are going to put it? While you may not have much choice, still consider how far away it is from your kitchen, the closer the better and also which spot gets the most sun? Also is it a windy spot? Wind can be devastating on a veggie garden, drying soils and destroying plants. I’ve had pumpkin seedlings die in a day at the hands of a hard norwester. If it’s windy, plan how to protect your veggie garden? Perhaps with a fence, wind cloth, natives, or some edible shrubs to break up that wind? Consider the thermal/reflective masses that you can utilize near to your veggie beds. These are objects that can soak up heat during the day and release it at night such as concrete pathways, fences, rock features, houses, sheds). Reflective light off a house or a tree can lift the ambient

Keep the bed width to a maximum of 100cm. It may seem small but it’s a great size with the middle easily reachable. Raised beds are great. They don’t have to be expensive macrocarpa monoliths. They can be built from upcycling materials. Roofing iron, garage doors, bricks, pine logs, old baths, buckets and so on costing little to no money. If timber is the pathway, stay away from tanalised timber. A great long lasting alternative is macrocarpa (4 to 5 cm thick).
Creating a new veggie bed from scratch
This is my least favourite but can be very effective, for more reading check out John Jeavons biointensive growing technique in his book How to grow more Vegetables. Basically you scalp the turf and weeds off the top. Double digging is where you put to the side a spade’s depth of soil and dig up the next spade’s depth down and swap them. Subsoil is coming to the surface and the top surface soil is swapped for the subsoil. Now for many, you will hit gravel or a clay/silt pan so this double digging goes out the window. Instead mix in some compost to the top 5cm of soil. Use straw/ramial wood chips as a mulch for moisture retention and weed suppression... X10 on the hard work scale. 2. Raised beds: i. Small raised bed 5-20cm high. Spread cardboard out the area the raised bed will sit on covering every bit of grass/weeds you can see, don’t be shy with your cardboard use as this kills off any unwanted wandering weeds. Place the raised bed down directly onto the cardboard. Fill up with a topsoil compost 50/50 mix or use the super soil mix recipe [see inset]. ii. Raised bed option 2. The above can be done to any old veggie beds that are weedy and grassy, just cover with cardboard and then top with 5-10cm quality compost. iii. Bigger raised beds still need cardboard placed to suppress grasses and weeds. A mid-season attack of cooch grass rampaging through your bed is something no gardener needs. Add the super soil mix [see inset]. You can use a wood chip in the bottom of the bed for drainage. Just make sure you have a minimum 30cm deep of the Super soil mix at the top. iv. ‘No-dig/lasagne/compost’ bed method. This suits a smaller raised bed of up to 30cm high. Collect a mix of Nitrogen rich ingredients (manure, grass clippings, bokashi bucket) and carbon rich ingredients (woodchips, straw, leaves). Then start layering- 5cm layers of alternate carbon and nitrogen ingredients. It might look like this, Wood Chips/horse manure/straw/grass clippings/leaves/ manure/wood chips. Or could be as simple as manure/woodchips/ manure/straw/manure/straw. Build as high as you can as the layers will break down and the whole lot will be at least 50% lower in a month.
3. Straw bale garden: I love this technique any bale of straw can be used but I prefer a lucerne bale. If using a wheat/barley straw bale water in some blood and bone or manure. Then keep watering 30mins every day for a week. We’re trying to get the bale wet!!!. Place the bale where you want again on top of cardboard to stop grass growing up into it. Make multiple holes in the top and put a handful or 2 of compost in the hole and plant your seedling or larger seeds. The bale will decompose over the summer months feeding your plants. Next season you continue to plant in this broken down bale that is integrating with the soil below. Then treat how you would any garden bed over the coming years topping up with compost etc... Using a lucerne bale doesn’t require the blood and bone to be added at the beginning, it does still need to be watered. You could grid out a complete veggie garden using bales. Leaving space for pathways etc. Cardboard out the pathways as well and cover with a wood chip.

International visitors will need to buy a permit to go to Milford Sound under radical plans announced last week. The Milford Opportunities Project masterplan also recommends the airstrip be closed, cruise ships banned, and a new park-and-ride system operate from a hub in Te Anau. The goal is to stop Milford Sound Piopiotahi being the “rush-in, rush-out place” it has become in recent years, with busloads of tourists daytripping from Queenstown, says project group chair Dr Keith Turner. Instead, visitors will be encouraged to also spend time in Te Anau and various stop offs along the Milford Road, and other spots throughout Southland. Visitor numbers to UNESCO World Heritage site Milford Sound peaked at 870,000 visitors in 2019, up from 430,000 in 2013. “While Covid set back the numbers, we expect them to return because it is a rare opportunity to visit true wilderness,” Dr Turner said.
“We believe Te Anau should be the start of that journey and we know that is a fundamental change for the market, but Milford Sound Piopiotahi should not be a rush-in, rush-out place. “We want to restore the essence of the place. Visitors should feel the wairua (spirit) of the place, the tranquillity, the awesome surroundings and the wilderness.” The masterplan also recommends creating more visitor opportunities near Te Anau, including cycle and walking tracks, better walking and viewing opportunities at the sound, and improving the layout of the limited flat area of Milford. Another key recommendation is to have one body managing Milford Sound Piopiotahi, as the area is currently covered by many overlapping legislative acts, which makes improvements difficult to achieve. Mana whenua have worked in partnership with the project team and also as an advisory group. Dr Turner says the project group, which began work in 2017, received strong feedback “that the numbers, intensified by mass arrivals of buses from Queenstown around lunchtime, were causing parking congestion in many places, problems on the Milford Road and at the sound itself”. The park-and-ride and permit system would see international visitors charged to visit the area. New Zealanders would also need a permit, but it would be free. Private vehicle parking at the sound will be limited, however. Income from the international permits would pay for improvements to infrastructure and conservation projects in Fiordland National Park, and enable mana whenua culture and history to be fully represented along the tourist route. A combined visitor centre and park-and-ride base would be established in Te Anau, with another at Milford Sound, along with new hotel and staff accommodation. The buses would eventually be electric or hydrogen, with the longer-term goal of making Milford Sound a carbon-zero tourist destination. “We received clear feedback that most visitors were as entranced by the journey through the Eglinton and Hollyford valleys as they were with the Milford Sound destination but did not have enough time to enjoy the many stop-offs available,” Dr Turner said. “We want to create more time for the journey to Milford Sound Piopiotahi. There are many places around Te Anau and along the Milford Road which are stunning and well worth a visit.
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash has announced $15 million for the next stage of the Milford Opportunities Project; two years of detailed planning, community consultation, consenting, and preparation for new infrastructure.

Campaign to save airstrip Flightseeing companies intend to fight plans to close Milford’s runway. The Queenstown Milford Users Group (QMUG), which represents six fixed wing operators, will meet with Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult this week to thrash out a battle plan.
Milford Sound flights make up more than 90% of the revenue for fixed wing flightseeing businesses operating out of Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau, and are some of the top-rated experiences on TripAdvisor. “To make this call is a kick in the guts after the most challenging 18-month period of our lives. We have invested in supporting the region and the people whose livelihoods depend on us. “The rationale seems flawed. Why close the airport and cut out alternative modes of transport, when you are trying to reduce road traffic congestion?” “We also know from Minister Nash’s comments recently that he wants to promote value over volume. Our businesses provide this.” Stokes says flying into Milford Sound is tied into the history of Fiordland, since the first fixed-wing aircraft landed there in 1932, and the industry is exploring sustainable electrified aircraft.
The Milford Opportunities Project group wants to close the historic runway as part of its plans to redesign tourism in Milford Sound and the lower South, saying it is in a poor state of repair, liable to flooding and at risk from earthquakeinduced tsunamis. Project chair Dr Keith Turner says only about 3% of visitor numbers come by air and fixed wing aircrafts can only land 150 days a year due to the weather. But QMUG chair James Stokes, of Glenorchy Air, disputes all that. “We met with Dr Turner on Friday, but he wasn’t really interested in any feedback we had to give him,” Stokes said on Sunday. “So, we’re meeting with Jim Boult, who is trying to stand up for us on this in Queenstown but has been side-lined. “We’re gearing up for a fight. We’re not going down quietly.” QMUG members believe the condition of the runway has been exaggerated to make the case for closure. Stokes says visitor numbers by air are more than double Dr Turner’s claims, as many as 70,000 per year, and flights can land on 180 to 230 days per year.

Slow mass tourism is still mass tourism Remember the crazy plan about 10 years back to cut a $180 million ‘Milford Dart’ tunnel through the mountains near Glenorchy? The 11.3km single-lane private bus tunnel aimed to shorten the bus journeys from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Had it not been for a two-year spirited campaign from the community at the top of the lake, the bulldozers might have moved in. At first glance, the Milford Opportunities Project’s plans to transform how tourists move around the lower South seem to be a world away from the Bond villain-esque Milford Dart tunnel. Rather than speed up the experience, the aim is to slow it down. Sounds great and it’s been enthusiastically welcomed by the Government as a “self-funded, sustainable tourism system paid for by visitors”, but on closer inspection there are some real problems with the plan, and perhaps it would be just as problematic as the tunnel. First off, how many international tourists do we need to pay for all this? I thought the Government’s goal was to move away from mass tourism, but the infrastructure, with new hotels, hubs, visitor centres, renewable electricity generation, etc, will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The Government’s given $15m just for the next stage of planning. If some of the infrastructure is privately funded, the companies building it will still expect a return, generated through tourist numbers. Sure, visitors might go into

Milford on electric buses, but they still need to fly to New Zealand. They’ll still use all the local amenities along the way mostly funded by the NZ rate payers and generating the same amount of rubbish. And what’s the carbon and environmental cost of building all this infrastructure, especially a hotel at Milford Sound? Secondly, what’s the effect on local operators and the people they employ? Project boss Dr Keith Turner has already controversially signalled the intention to close the airstrip, to the outrage of fixed wing aircraft operators who employ scores of people across Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau. The Queenstown Milford Users Group (QMUG), which represents flightseeing companies, rightly point out this appears to contradict Tourism Minister Stuart Nash’s plan to target ‘high value’ visitors, people with deep pockets but often limited time. And what about the 80 or so operators who take people on day trips into Milford? Will the park-and-ride be operated by a single commercial contractor, with other operators effectively blocked out? Or will they need to buy electric vehicles too? And, finally, what about New Zealanders? The MOP team suggests they too will need a permit, to enter part of their own wilderness, along what is now a public road. The permit will be free but it will set a very strange precedent about access in Aotearoa.

New runs open at Cardrona by staff reporter
Skiers and snowboarders at Cardrona now have 65ha more terrain to explore. Last Thursday saw the opening of the Willow’s Quad creating lift access to two basins which feature undulating intermediate terrain. It’s the first major piece of lift-accessed terrain opened in New Zealand in almost a decade. Wayfare chief experience officer Bridget Legnavsky was on the slopes for the opening. Willows’ two basins are located in the Soho Ski Area on the southern face of Mt Cardrona. Overlooking Queenstown, Willows sits below the last couple of corners of the skifield’s Skyline trail. Cardrona announced the acquisition of the ski area rights for Soho in 2018. The Willow’s Quad chairlift is the former McDougalls Quad, which has been refurbished and relocated to service the new terrain. Skiers and snowboarders were loving their first taste of the new terrain, Bridget said.

How to deal with bullies either online or real time in two easy steps Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland
Are you being bullied? Yes, you read that correctly, bullying is not what it used to be, it can be there in your own home just by picking up your phone. According to DigitalTrends.com (April 8th 2020) there has been a 70% increase in bullying amongst children and young people since lockdown. Unlike the ‘old fashioned’ bullying of the school yard bullying behaviour online is amplified behind the protection of the device. It is so hard when people say unkind things on social media, it hurts, it makes the blood boil, you want to put them right.

who he had become and worked with me to change this. He realised this was a complete waste of energy. Just recently a friend of mine who is in his late 50’s was trolled on social media, his reaction was a good one, he ignored it and saw it for what it was.
Our team works a lot with children and young adults with dyslexia, we work directly with the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand. With this diagnosis comes lots of other things and one of them is bullying.

Recently our team spent time with an expert Bec Cousins ‘The Kids Coach’ based in the UK, on how to help children and adults being bullied. I want to share what we learned from Becs’ work. It’s GOLD.
See it for what it is, a waste of time with someone who you don’t know, don’t want to know and is wanting a response, silent is powerful. Turn off and spend time with those who do matter.
We understand the mind of the bully, we look at what drives this behaviour, this allows the ‘victim’ to see it for what it is. It is more about the bully than it is about them.
Recently I worked with an 11 year old, who was being bullied at school, I also worked with a 32 year old, she was being bullied at work. What I did with them was this: on a piece of A4 ( horizontal) we wrote down in small writing at the bottom of the sheet the unkind things that had been said, in black.
The bully picks on people at school or at the workplace who are easy targets, people who are good, kind, quiet, intelligent, soulful and care about others. The bully bullies to feel power, strength and control, the bully does this to feel these things because these are lacking naturally. Really they are insecure and envious of the qualities their victims have naturally.
Then I asked each client to think of 4 people they loved and trusted and asked them to write down 3 things they would say about the client if I asked them what they thought about them.
Social media is different, all you need to do is hop onto Queenstown Trading and read some of the comments about a post that’s quite innocent. People argue, say unkind things, rant and vent, typing away furiously proving their point is ‘right’ or at least trying to.
The words are always so powerful. Then I asked them “Who do you trust and who don’t you trust? Who is right and who is wrong?”
We wrote these at the top of the sheet in colour and large.
COVID has contributed to this, here’s why.
The answer is always the same, the bully loses power, the client gains their sense of self and their qualities that make them who they are.
I worked with a top lawyer in London, he was in his late 60’s, he was fed up with this behaviour that had developed during lockdown.
I invite the client to see the bully as a person who is struggling, has a hard time at home, and doesn’t have the life they have.
He did not like being told what to do, he hated the constraints that were being ‘made’ up with no common sense and he wanted to take back control.
To feel for them, not fear them. To know they are doing the best with the resources they have right now, they can’t help it. The bully, in fact, is the victim.
He became vicious on social media, looking for things to have a go at, looking for a fight and boy did he get them, lots of them. To the point where his entire evening was taken by proving his point to people who didn’t care and didn’t matter. He caught himself; he did not like

Originally from Gore, Jackie has lived and toured overseas for more than 20 years. After being ‘stuck’ in New Zealand due to Covid-19 restrictions since 2019, she’s decided to trade the bright lights of Nashville, USA, for the mountains of Wānaka.

The single is a testament to modern technology and the creative collaboration that ensued while international borders were closed. “Being in Wānaka is a completely different lifestyle and experience to Nashville. This past year I feel I have stepped into someone else’s body,” she says. “But I am loving being close to my family after being away for so many years, it’s been a really special time. “I do miss my Nashville music family and the opportunity to play on the international stage, however I can’t wait to catch up with my Kiwi followers on the Back to the Roots tour. It’s going to be a blast.”

National Library ‘partners with pirates’ The New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) has accused the National Library of partnering with ‘internet pirates’ after the library announced plans to handover hundreds of thousands of books to the Internet Archive. The Internet Archive is an American digital library which provides free access to digitised collections of books, music, movies and games. Its stated mission is to provide “universal access to all knowledge”. The NZSA works to represent the professional interests of writers in New Zealand. Together with the Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ), the organisation is calling on government ministers to cancel the handover. In 2020, four major book publishers launched a lawsuit against the Internet Archive challenging the copyright validity of the digital lending programme. Because of the way many national lending schemes work, authors don’t receive any payment when their work is accessed via the Internet Archive.
The scheme has been dubbed “internet piracy” and “mass copyright infringement”. The work of Kiwi authors like Catherine Chidgey, Keri Hulme, Elizabeth Knox and Damien Wilkins have already had their books illegally distributed online for free via the Internet Archive. First Thursdays Queenstown – August First Thursdays returns on 5 August from 5–7pm with seven leading art galleries open late and ready to offer exhibitions, talks, and opportunities to meet artists. This month Queenstown has the exciting privilege of hosting an exhibition by Yuki Kihara, New Zealand’s representative at the upcoming Venice Biennale – the Olympics of the art world – at Milford Galleries. Yuki Kihara is an internationally significant multi-media artist with works in prestigious collections including New York’s Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, Auckland Art Gallery and Queensland Art Gallery. Working across a range of media including photography, performance, and video she has built a comprehensive body of work and curatorial practice that examines gender roles, consumerism, (mis)representation, and societal issues from colonial and post-colonial perspectives. In a major new series of lenticular photographs, Kihara explores the history of small Islands formerly designated as quarantine facilities, including those off Otago. In the guise of Salome and dressed in her signature Victorian mourning dress, the artist develops narratives which unite the forgotten stories of these islands with the circumstances of now and the global covid pandemic. Also showing is ‘Fa’afafine: In a Manner of A Woman’ (2020) which revisits iconic earlier work and provides a critique of the imposition of western binary norms of sexuality and gender onto indigenous Pacific peoples.
