Have we learnt nothing?

Twelve months seems a lifetime ago, so much water has travelled under the Kawarau Falls Bridge. This time last year we were just starting to experience our first domestic only ski season in very uncertain times. Mountain operators were concerned whether they would be able to open at all and we were riling at the stupidity of the idea of having an MIQ facility In Queenstown, with our lack of health services, which fortunately went nowhere. We were also confidently considering the opportunity that an economy less reliant on tourism might deliver, all great and worthy topics. Roll on twelve months and despite the Aussie Bubble bursting, Queenstown in general is feeling pretty pleased that we are through the worst of Covid (hopefully). There is some really great work going on in bringing new industry sectors to Queenstown, last month’s announcement of a $45 million tech hub is one and last week’s report from the Regenerative Recovery Advisory Group, another. QLDC has grabbed multiple millions of dollars from Government to get the infrastructure ready for the future so we have a town that stands proud and actually lives up to its global image and yes, can cope with growth. Downtown will look incredible and in five years we won’t recognise it with traffic diverted out of town, new retail, galleries and transport interchanges. We are staring at an exciting future.

So why is the conversation muted on these really positive stories of rejuvenation and growth and gravitating back to the same old issues we’ve been talking about for decades? Bemoaning the trafﬁc and parking and those bloody cones. Remember last year, it was frighteningly quiet along Frankton Road and while getting a park did improve markedly, a lot of stores and restaurants, mostly owner operator stores by the way, were closing their doors permanently. What ever happened to our bright new post covid positivity? Yes, it’s a pain currently, but if we learnt anything last year it was lets stick together and focus on getting through this because our economy, our infrastructure and even our tourism sector is going to be in such better shape as a result. We are currently about to have one of the best school holiday seasons on record and the snow arrived right on cue for the feel good holiday factor that will make the cash registers ring. Many businesses are booming and not just the big end of town, we’ve learnt to do more with less and its working. We should be dancing in the streets and embracing the future that’s on the horizon, and not stuck in the past crying about the roadworks and the parking. Onwards and upwards Queenstown. The work of QLDC’s Economic Development Unit was brought into sharp focus when Covid-19 decimated the tourism economy. Some 60% of workers in the district work in tourism jobs, and 40% of businesses rely on international visitor tourism spend. EDU received $75,000 from Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) for the pilot. It is supported by Destination Queenstown, Lake Wānaka Tourism and Startup Queenstown Lakes, and will collaborate with Research & Innovation Queenstown, which is building a $45 million tech hub in Remarkables Park. Harris says: “Queenstown Lakes district has a global reputation as a spectacular place to visit and holiday, but we want to challenge the perception of our district as a place simply to come on holiday.

Queenstown Lakes has launched a new scheme to attract entrepreneurs and business leaders who can end its tourism dependency. The Home for Healthier Business campaign, a six-month pilot at this stage, promotes Queenstown, Wanaka and the surrounding communities as a place to live and work. The hope is that high-flying businesspeople will move here for the lifestyle, and then build a team of locals around themselves to do business. Its website tells the stories of people who’ve done just that, including Xero founder Rod Drury, global fintech leader Jason Wilby, accounting firm director Hayley Hobson, Mana Tahuna founder Michael Rewi, and food tech entrepreneur Alex Worker. The website - www.healthierbusiness.org - is already live and acts as a portal for business people considering relocation. It features information and resources on moving to the district, everything from professional networks to details on local schools. Tabs include ‘Build a Life’, ‘Build a Business’ and ‘Knowledge Base’. “We envision these people establishing new businesses or transferring existing enterprises to the region,” says Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) economic development manager Peter Harris. “It is not a ‘mass attraction’ campaign; it’s about recruiting a small number of individuals, many of whom already have a connection to the region, and providing them with the resources, tools and networks they need to embed in the community. “We hope to support them to grow their business here, and ideally open up new employment opportunities and career pathways for locals.”

“We have an exciting and progressive community of talent and innovation here which we want to build on. The Home for Healthier Business is a campaign to showcase Queenstown, Wānaka and surrounding communities as thriving places to live and do business while forging a regenerative economy.” The push will be for low-carbon, non-extractive industries, such as hospo tech, and regenerative initiatives, but everyone is welcome. Harris says economic diversification in the region will take time, but he is positive about the future. Food tech leader Alex Worker was at this morning’s launch, ironically held at Queenstown Resort College, which trains people for careers in tourism and hospitality. Worker spent six months in Panama in lockdown before returning to NZ for personal reasons. He owned an investment property in Jack’s Point and emailed the council about business opportunities. Both Harris and Mayor Jim Boult responded personally. “We realised this is one of the best centres for any returning expat Kiwi looking to have the balance of both business and lifestyle,” Worker says. “You’re seven minutes from an international airport, within two minutes of that airport I can drop my kids off at the local school, and I found a really comfortable, warm and inviting co-working space at Five Mile.” Worker highlighted the infrastructure and resources, with highlights such as being able to get a 4G signal while skiing up the mountain, and the pool of untapped talent, people who are living here for the lifestyle, often working in bars rather than their chosen profession. “I think this region is primed for success over the next decade. I think it takes info-tech, cleantech, film tech or food tech to help enable that prosperity... but I don’t think it needs to be growth at scale.”

But it appears to focus on the removal of 22 Wilding Douglas fir and 16 native trees, and the native replanting plan, rather than the path itself. Friends chairman Jay Cassells says: “We will digest all this material although we note that there appears, as feared, to be one option proposed - not the number promised: there seems to be only narrow consultation on trees - and none on the route of any path. “Is it a fait accompli? “Friends of the Queenstown Gardens have done what we set out to do - to have QLDC take time to prepare its plans and disclose them . “So now for the first time there is a crucial, if very short, opportunity for the community to question and understand what is to be lost or gained and to tell council its views. “We urge everyone to do so.” The is part of the wider Queenstown Town Centre Street Upgrade programme and also part of the Active Travel Network.

Friends of Queenstown Gardens have criticised the “narrow” framework for public consultation on a new downtown cycle path, but want locals to have their say anyway. On Friday, Queenstown Lakes District Council opened two weeks of consultation on the proposed path through the historic reserve, connecting Camp Street and Park Street. The Friends group had raised concerns about the project, specifically that there was limited public input or information available. The consultation document - available on council website Let’s Talk - details the plans.

The council consultation document says the path, an alternative to the route through the Gardens and also the small footpath past Queenstown Resort College, will provide a safer gradient, “particularly important for less confident cyclists and on those icy winter days”. It will connect to the new shared path on Park Street, reducing travel time for commuting cyclists. This option is the least ‘engineered’ option, it says, with lower retaining walls and fewer guard rails than other options considered, the most affordable, and the alignment doesn’t impact rare and important specimen trees in the Gardens. The alignment was considered through the Queenstown Town Centre Masterplan process in 2017.

Introducing the latest

I have been among the many that have been calling for Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi to get to Queenstown and see what a huge impact our town’s workforce shortage is having on the local economy. My office has had word that Mr Faafoi plans to finally get here after his long and notable absence. The shortage of willing workers unable to get through New Zealand’s borders to take up jobs in Queenstown is so dire I think political point scoring should be put aside. Quite simply, I want to work with any official or MP that will allow hotels to fill to their maximum capacity, cafes and restaurants to open the hours need to and tourism operators to have the staff they need to welcome and guide their visitors. In that spirit, I would be the first person to put my hand up to meet with Mr Faafoi to help him better understand exactly how this crisis is affecting the Queenstown region. Our town’s worker shortage is no secret, but the Labour Government has simply ignored our dire situation. It is very disappointing, but my focus is on fixing the problem. That is what is going to save businesses pushed to the brink of closure because they cannot operate at their full potential. It is what is going to keep businesses that are already key employers of our region’s permanent residents in good health. Just like businesses in many industries in Queenstown, there are a shortage of auditors across New Zealand. The Auditor-General has a shortage of auditors and asked the government for help because it couldn’t compete its reports on time. In response, the Government passed legislation under urgency last week to extend the time the Auditor-General has to complete its audit reports by two months. This is a clear demonstration of the government acting quickly to help the public sector, while ignoring the needs of private businesses. Queenstown has its own unique challenges just like the auditing sector. The Government doesn’t need to pass legislation under urgency to address Queenstown’s labour crisis, it already has the power under existing law to solve it. It is a disgrace that the government has not used these powers in the many months since the effects of COVID hit staff numbers in our region. This week I will invite Mr Faafoi to meet with me in Queenstown so I can relay the grave concerns brought to my office, and so that can I introduce him to business operators to hear from them directly. If Mr Faafoi hasn’t booked his trip south he needs to do it urgently.

Queenstown can’t afford for him to wait any longer. The Labour Government simply must get a better understanding of the devastating impact of their current immigration policies, which doesn’t just affect the Auditor-General in Wellington. I am here to do everything I can to get more people into jobs in Queenstown. While there are challenges to face there is still much to celebrate in the Queenstown region. GREAT BARRIER ISLAND Right at the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf, and surrounded by a National Marine Park is Great Barrier Island which is off the grid and supermarket-free. New Zealand’s fourth largest island is left as wild as possible, with walking tracks lacing through the hilly, forested interior. Photo: flickr Kapiti Island, 45 km north of Wellington is one of the countries several offshore islands that have been set aside as sanctuaries for native wildlife. An extensive predator eradication program means Kapiti Island is a haven for rare native birds such as the little spotted kiwi. The walk to the highest point requires a decent level of fitness, with steep tracks but truly rewarding birdlife and nature experiences and the view of the drop straight down is breathtaking. RAKINO ISLAND Lying just off shore from Auckland city and close to Waheke is the lesser known and a lot more laid back Rakino Island. With only 16 permanent residents it’s a great day trip. Rakino is surrounded by crystal clear water with sweeping views all the way up the gulf from Coromandel to Great Barrier and back to Auckland. It’s here that Sir George Grey, Governor of New Zealand built his first home before moving to Kawau Island. Rakino Island is a popular for fishing, swimming, snorkelling, diving and walking. There are no shops or electricity (there is solar power though), so the whole island is off-grid. While on the island check out the world’s first solar-powered telephone which is still in use and allows local free calling to Auckland. Getting around Rakino Island is by walking or tractor as the preferred method of transport. From the moment you set foot on the island, you enter a relaxed world of tranquillity where time has stood still. There are many public bays and beaches around the island where you will find shade under the coastal Pohutukawa. The public wharf is located at the southern end of Sandy Bay and the car ferry access ramp is at the western end of Sanford Way in Home Bay. ULVA ISLAND ULVA Island is probably one that you’ve not heard of because of its bigger sister, Stewart Island which take the glory. But like, Stewart Island, Ulva Island offers an insight into how New Zealand used to be. Staggering numbers of native birds have survived and thrived, free from invasive predators. Saddlebacks, riflemen, Stewart Island robins and mohua are amongst the ultra-rare species that are ten a penny on Ulva Island. It’s all wonderfully noisy, too, as the rainforest fills with birdsong. 50 years on and Bangladesh is going strong Bangladesh, home to 160 million people, has been heralded a ‘development miracle’ and this year celebrates 50 years of independence. In that time rather than becoming a failed state it’s grown and has every reason to celebrate. In 1971, Bangladesh emerged like a phoenix after a crushing nine-month Liberation War. Global tax deal reached despite vocal opposition The world’s largest economies agreed to sweeping changes to the global tax system, despite staunch opposition from low-tax regimes like Barbados, Ireland and Hungary. 130 countries, including NZ have signed up to the deal, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development announced in late June. Hot air balloon passenger describes crash by Paul Taylor - editor

A passenger onboard the hot air balloon that crashed in Arrowtown on Friday says he feared it would take off again without the pilot. Malcolm Porter, of Dunedin, was one of 11 people on the Sunrise Balloons flight, which was hit by a sudden gust of wind just before landing and slammed into a small bank. “To me, the first impact, I’d compare it to free falling in a lift and then stopping at the bottom. It was way more [violent] than I thought it would be,” he says. “We were dragged across the paddock for about 300 metres, took out a deer fence and then the balloon wrapped round a power pole and hit the house.” Two passengers were thrown from the basket on impact, along with the experienced pilot Carrick McLellan. “I heard one of the guys say ‘the captain’s gone’, and I thought ‘God, I hope we don’t take off again’. That was what worried me. “When we came to a stop it was all pretty quiet. Everyone was in shock. There was no screaming or yelling or anything.” Porter says the one-hour flight had been very calm and he hadn’t felt any danger until the crash landing, shortly before 10am. The balloon had been going too fast to land in its usual spot, so had continued over a road and into the paddock, off Morven Ferry Road. He estimates they were about eight metres (25ft) off the ground when they were hit by the gust of wind, which blew them into the low bank. “We all got pounded into the bottom of the basket on impact, except those who were thrown out. “When we were getting dragged across the paddock, we didn’t think it was going to end, it just kept going.” Coming to a stop near the house, the passengers slowly pulled themselves out, helping each other, before being guided into the house to keep warm. “The lady from the house took some blankets out to the people still lying in the paddock, who weren’t moving.”

The pilot sustained an arm injury, while another passenger in the basket suffered a broken ankle and the rest minor and moderate injuries. They were all treated at Queenstown’s Lakes District Hospital. Porter says pilot Carrick McLellan came to visit his wife, his arm in a sling, bringing her a card and chocolates for her birthday. “I think he feels pretty bad, but what can you do? “I’ve no ill will at all towards the company. You’re in the lap of the Gods. It’s a risk you take and he couldn’t do anymore than he did.” That said, Porter says his hot air ballooning days are now behind him. “That’s one off the bucket list, but I think we’ll leave it at that.”

The trip was a birthday present for Porter’s wife, and they were onboard with their sister and brother-in-law, of Invercargill, who all did not want to be named. They all suffered relatively minor injuries, swollen knees, a broken finger and sore back. “My knees are all swelled up. I’m walking like a cowboy at the moment, but I’ll be fine. My wife stayed the night in hospital with abdominal pain, they think it might be a bruised liver.” The two people thrown from the basket sustained internal injuries and were flown to Dunedin Hospital.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry into the incident. Chief Investigator of Accidents Harald Hendel is appealing for witnesses. “We’re interested in hearing from people who saw the accident or observed the balloon near to the ground – particularly if you have photographed or captured the flight on video,” Hendel says. Investigators have been in Queenstown over the weekend, recording the accident scene, recovering any remaining wreckage, securing electronic records – including photos, videos, and location data on people’s cellphones – and interviewing witnesses, the pilot and Sunrise staff. “We’ll be looking at the balloon, basket and other elements of the aircraft, its individual and type history, performance, maintenance, design,” Hendel said in a statement released on Saturday. “The operating environment is also of interest, including physical, weather, operating company safety system, organisational culture, traffic control, regulatory matters.” Sunrise Balloons has operated for 23 years without incident. The company has temporarily suspended operations and is co-operating with police, Civil Aviation and the Transport Accident Investigation Commission. Sunrise Balloons owner and chief pilot Hugh McLellan, Carrick’s father, said the company is “deeply upset” about the incident and the injuries sustained to their staff and guests. “We are fully supporting our staff and guests at this difficult time, and we wish all involved a full and speedy recovery,” Hugh McLellan says. “An internal investigation is underway and we are working closely with all relevant authorities.” Witnesses should email TAIC at info@taic.org.nz

We all have filters, these are neurological filters which allow us to filter out what’s important and what’s not important, these filters are determined by our belief systems. Therefore what we believe about ourselves really does shape how we see the world.

It was Henry Ford who said “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” What you truly believe about yourself is actually how life will play out for you, what this means is, if you think well I’m a lucky kind of person and good things happen to me then good things will happen to you.

I have a saying and that is we don’t see the world as things are, we see the world as we are. And therefore if the world you’re seeing is not the world that you’re enjoying then one of the questions you need to ask yourself is what is it I believe about myself that causes me to only see this type of world Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural CodingTM Company. If however, you think, I’m a really unlucky person nothing good really ever happens to me, and guess what? That’s exactly what happens.

We can sometimes tend to think that life happens to us and that things are done to us but actually it’s our internal thoughts that are so powerful that what we think affects not only how we feel but how our reality is shaped. There was a recent study done on the study of luck and they collected a group of people that believe themselves to be really lucky and then a group of people that believe themselves to be really unlucky. They showed them a newspaper and asked the groups to count the number of photographs in the paper. On average it took the unlucky group 2 minutes and 38 seconds to count 43 photographs in the newspaper. It only took just over a second for the lucky group of people to count 43 photographs in the newspaper and this is why.

my friends that I was able to gain a more positive outlook on life. While doing the mahi, I started a fundraiser to support the Mental Health Foundation because of the help they provide Kiwi’s to get back on their feet and also, they are at the forefront of reducing the negative stigma associated with mental health. The work they do within our community is remarkable and by running for charity I hope to show that it is cool to korero and help build its profile and recognition. It is okay to not be okay, and I want to help and contribute to breaking down the stigma attached to having a mental illness and do my part in the community to normalize open conversations regarding mental wellbeing. I believe mental illness needs more awareness and education on how to recognize the symptoms before it becomes too late, and by supporting the Foundation I know that this is possible to achieve.

Call me crazy as I’m doing something really different to promote positive mental health and raise awareness for the incredible work the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand does in our area. As a New Year’s Resolution, I set myself the goal of completing 2021 running kilometres by the end of the year, averaging a total of 5.5 kilometres every single day. This might not sound like a big feat for some; however, I only actively began running during last year’s lockdown as a way of keeping myself fit and occupied. I am a relative newcomer to Queenstown have now been a resident for over two years now, I originally hail from Adelaide but I’m a convert and love the outdoor activities that the area provides, the events that are put on throughout the year, and feeling part of the community atmosphere. I think, everyone one stage or other struggles with their own personal mental health and wellbeing. For me this was the end of last year, I was going through a breakup, having a lot of work-related stress and due to the border restrictions, I hadn’t seen my family all year. I chose to seek professional help, and it was one of the factors along with physical exercise and the support of

It’s already halfway through the year and I have run just over 1,020 kilometers, meaning I am well on target to successfully complete this task. Some days are harder than others, especially these recent Queenstown frosty mornings, but at the end of the day I never regret getting moving. Physical activity has been proven to boost mental wellbeing and I am a strong believer of that. I am sure most can relate that last year was difficult and running helped me obtain a more positive mindset. Later this year I will be completing the Queenstown Marathon once again, it truly is ‘flat out beautiful’ and such a great event. If you haven’t done it grab a ticket and come join me or catch me running down my favorite trails around Old Shotover Bridge or down the Frankton Track as I train. I would absolutely love to see others inspired to start up running or take on a challenge such as the half or full marathon in November. An Innovative Queenstown Lakes mental health project could go national. The Good Yarn pilot project to support the mental health and resilience of the Queenstown Lakes community now has the chance to become a national model thanks to a new strategic partnership.

They are supported with regular supervision from a clinical team including a GP and mental health counsellor, to ensure their ongoing safety. The first Queenstown workshops have already been held for Filipino and Brazilian communities as well as new and expectant parents. The initial workshops have been extremely well received, with 100 percent of the participants to date rating them highly and saying they would “recommend it to others in their community”. Arts+Culture Shortland Street the Musical - Creative flair transforms beloved iconic show to the stage! Whether you love, hate or have never seen Shortland Street, a new stage performance of the beloved and often bemoaned soap opera is sure to capture hearts later this month. Shortland Street the Musical will be performed in the Cromwell College Auditorium from 16th till 24th July. Produced by Fine Thyme Theatre Company, the show has gone all out, enlisting an experienced and enthusiastic creative team to bring this Kiwi-classic to life. The Shortland Street storyline is based on the television series’ original characters, including Dr Hone Ropata and Dr Chris Warner. The director is, Lisa Clough, well known locally as co-manager of “Drama Queenstown” with the late and wonderful Kate Moeataua from 2010-2018. Lisa was born with drama in her blood and holds a diploma in teaching Speech and Drama from the Trinity College of London and has taught music and drama in local schools. Lisa is now following her passion for directing while managing a little munchkin of her own. “We have an amazing cast for this year’s production of Shortland Street – The Musical,” says Lisa. “Because Shortland Street is such an iconic part of Kiwi culture, we had plenty of talented people audition. Our cast is diverse, multi-faceted, and lots of fun.” The music and lyrics for the show were written by Guy Langford, and his connection to the show runs deep – his father was set designer for the television series in 1992. Langford also played the role of Dr Warner when the show first debuted in Auckland in 2018. Fine Thyme Theatre Company are taking the honours of being the first company in the South Island to bring this hilarious interpretation of NZ bestknown soap drama to the South Island stage.

The musical is an “affectionate parody” of the long-running drama, and will cover the first couple of seasons of the series, including all the essential elements – murderers on the loose, medical calamities, forbidden love and a Christmas curse. Gilly Pugh, a veteran performing arts practitioner from Wanaka, has taken the role of musical director for this production. Gilly has spent her adult life performing, directing, writing, touring and teaching. She is most comfortable in the realm of comedy and music and Shortland Street – The Musical, ticks all the boxes. The cast is a contingent of 20 actors, singers, and dancers from all over Central Otago and the Southern Lakes region and includes a few rugby players, a teacher or two, a linesman for the county, and a local politician. Tiffany Bindon takes on the role of choreographer and has experience in tap, ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, stilt walking, fire dancing, being a fairy, and of course, musical theatre! Tiffany is usually on stage, but is excited to join Lisa and Gilly in creating the masterpiece that is Shortland Street. “We are so privileged to be working with such a talented creative team,” says Katie Lindsay, President of Fine Thyme Theatre Company. “Our cast and crew have been hard at work these past few weeks learning songs, running lines, and figuring out how to make muffins tap dance.” She went on to say “Cromwell is in for a treat with this absolute Kiwi-classic!” Shortland Street the Musical will be performed in the Cromwell College Auditorium from 16th till 24th July. Graeme James Seasons Tour Returning to New Zealand after a two year stint in Europe, award winning alt-folk artist Graeme James is back in New Zealand to share new songs and stories from the road. The locally-based author is launching ‘A Lair of Bones’ at Sherwood on 17th July 2021. The free event is in collaboration with the Queenstown Writers Festival and is a rare opportunity to buy a print copy of the book and hear more about the new series from Helen Scheuerer herself. ‘A Lair of Bones’ is the first in an epic fantasy quartet called The Curse of the Cyren Queen. The story follows Roh, the daughter of an infamous criminal vying to win a better life in a treacherous set of trails called the Queen’s Tournament. “It’s a big, epic quest across realms; there’s lots of deadly trials, magic and all of that good stuff,” says Helen. “It’s Young Adult Fantasy, but it’ll appeal to people of all ages. I’m in my early thirties and I love YA Fantasy. It has this fresh quality to it. The characters in it are experiencing a lot of firsts, there’s a lot of heightened emotions and the steaks are so high.”

Originally from Sydney, Helen visited Queenstown on holiday five years ago and fell in love with the landscape. “The scenery here is a fantasy author’s dream – that’s why I’ve stayed. “I came here on holiday by myself and I was just stopping in Queenstown for a short stay before heading to the North Island to ride horses through valleys (I was counting that as fantasy research, it’s tax deductible, right?). But I fell in love with the mountains, the lake, the breath-taking scenery here… and then I met a boy! So I came back to live here less than four months after my first visit.” Helen began her career writing YA Fantasy fiction as an “escape” from literary fiction. “I had a book contract with a publisher for literary fiction… I was contracted for three years and it wasn’t going overly well. I’d done a Creative Writing degree and I didn’t realise it at the time, but I was being moulded into a particular kind of writer. It wasn’t until I was going through the edits of my literary fiction book that I realised: I don’t enjoy that kind of writing. “So I started reading lots of YA Fantasy again and drafting my first Fantasy book. I was addicted! I decided to Indie publish because I hadn’t enjoyed the traditional process; it felt very long-winded and inefficient.” Each book in Helen’s first series, The Oremere Chronicles, became a #1 bestseller within 24 hours of its release on Amazon. Despite penning several manuscripts in the resort, it’ll be the first time Helen has launched a book in Queenstown. At the event, an interview with Helen will be followed by the opportunity to ask questions, purchase a copy of the book and have it signed by the author. While Queenstown business optimism has been deflated by the suspension of the Tasman bubble with New South Wales, talk of economic diversification to tackle our tourism dependency is no longer just hot air. Following on from last month’s announcement of a $45m tech hub at Remarkables Park, two pieces of work have moved the needle away from an economy where 60% of workers are in tourism jobs. Last Tuesday’s launch of the Home for Healthier Business campaign, Queenstown Lakes District Council’s bid to attract at least 15 more Rod Drurys to the town, made the national headlines. (see page 4) But, in contrast, the Regenerative Recovery Advisory Group’s final report, published last Monday, has not received much love. Post lockdown, the think tank was tasked with re-imagining the district’s economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing - a move away from extractive toward holistic. It assembled a collection of volunteer bright minds, including AI specialist Neil Jacobstein, who have spent the past year in discussions with community leaders, diversification experts and government ministers, combined with its own research. In its final report it makes seven key recommendations (see insert) to create a more balanced, sustainable future for the district and its people. And to add some meat to the bones, it backs four projects which are at various stages of creation. They are a Machine Learning Institute, run through Queenstown Resort College, a Glenorchy Science Education and Conservation Centre (GYSECC), a Solar Power Sharing Grid and an Angel/Early-Stage Investor Network. RRAG Chair Simon Telfer says he believes even

The Queenstown Machine Learning Institute (QMLI) will be a six-month course, with an initial focus on foundational knowledge for machine learning and programming, core classical machine learning skills, and finally practise with the latest patterns and techniques in deep learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. The first class of about 50 is likely to start in January of 2022, at Queenstown Resort College.

Telfer says it has focused on broader, longer term, structural thinking about the district, appreciating that economic diversification and increasing community wellbeing can’t happen overnight. “We recognised that our district’s history of extraction, geographic and connectivity obstacles and lack of large institutions all provide unique challenges,” he adds.

Establish a core group of sophisticated and seasoned investors in early-stage businesses to support the emergence and growth of local start-ups. Ransomware Hacks - Cyber Attacks An oft repeated comment in the International IT industry underlies the huge problem we all face – individuals, professionals, commercial entities, and the whole political system – all at risk. The saying goes something like this.

What can we do about it?

Consider these events around the world in the last few months: • The Irish Healthcare system has been in disarray for the last 6 weeks following a ransomware attack. All computer systems were shut down. A ransom of $US20 mill was demanded and not paid. • A similar situation occurred at the Waikato DHB here in NZ. • The 7th Colonial Oil Pipeline, providing over 50% of oil to California, was shut down due to a cyber-attack. US$ 4.0 mill was demanded and paid. • Solar Winds (including US Govt sensitive data) attacked by cyber criminals. • JBS (biggest meat packer in the world) attacked by cyber criminals. • Apple attacked by cyber criminals. • Joe Biden, in talks with Putin, identified 16 types of infrastructure against which he wanted to see no further cyber-attacks. • China hackers penetrated America’s Office of Personnel Management and stole the personal details of over 21 million people. • Sony Pictures, Mondalez Snack maker, and some Insurance companies have been attacked. • In France, a firm lost US$5.5 billion in 2020 to cyber-crime. • Allegations that China and Russia tried to interfere in the recent USA presidential election. • Microsoft spent $124billion in 2020 on antivirus software, firewalls, etc. • Website data breaches resulting in leaked user credentials.

Electronic fraud is rife. At the personal level and at the SME level we can take certain steps to reduce the risks of cyber-attacks. Here are some suggestions. • They estimate that about 90% of hacks are the result of ‘user error’ or preventable user mistakes. (Almost 90%of cyber-attacks are caused by human error or behaviour - chiefexecutive.net). Take advice on how to reduce this fertile ground for cyber fraud. Queenstown will be largely reliant on domestic tourists again this July, but the town shouldn’t discount itself to appeal to Kiwis.

That’s the view of Tourism Industry Association chief executive Chris Roberts, who addressed business leaders at the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce and Skyline Welcome to Winter Business Lunch last week.

“If the Queenstown Lakes District delivers a broad range of products and services and every operator strives to meet or exceed the expectations of every visitor, then this region can deliver for everyone and meet all of our social tourism goals.”

Roberts, speaking on the theme of social tourism, says there is an argument that Kiwis and overseas visitors should be charged differently when they holiday in New Zealand.

Queenstown is the number one destination for Air New Zealand customers this school holidays, with 100,000 seats in and out of the destination over the two weeks.

That can be done surreptitiously through booking software and openly through pricing, such as with New Zealand’s Great Walks, where internationals now pay more, and also through locals’ discount cards.

The vast majority will be Kiwis, with more than 600 regional flights compared to about 250 coming across the Tasman. That would have been higher, of course, had the bubble not popped with New South Wales.

“But Queenstown Lakes should not be discounting itself,” he says. “It doesn’t need to because a characteristic of New Zealand, where our tourism product is based on landscapes, is we have so many free things to do in this country.

Air New Zealand’s Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty told the business lunch the launch of the bubble was an internal signal for the organisation in moving “from survival to revival”.

“That means we don’t always get money out of the wallets of our overseas visitors, who would be quite prepared to pay, but on the positive side virtually every family in New Zealand can actually afford to have a holiday break.” Tourism Minister Stuart Nash earlier this year laid out his plans for NZ to target ‘high value visitors’, but Roberts says that language doesn’t sit well with him, believing it runs contrary to Kiwi culture of equity and Māori concept of making all visitors welcome. “I’m suggesting we alter our language. So, let’s talk about attracting high quality visitors and delivering a value experience to those visitors.” That could be a billionaire American, says Roberts, but also a Kiwi family from Timaru who’ll come in the off-season and share their experience with family and friends, or his own son, who’s working on a building site in Wellington to save for another ski holiday down here, “and will return again and again”.

But the outbreak in Sydney saw travellers change their plans. Staff at the call centre had received 12,000 calls on Sunday (June 27) alone, as customers looked to rebook. That’s the most since the pandemic began and led to a surge in domestic demand. On Saturday, Air NZ brought 3000 visitors to Queenstown, at the start of the holidays, on 20 flights. Geraghty says the airline has supported Queenstown more than any other destination in NZ, through famils, campaigns, travel packages and features in Kora magazine, and is “committed to seeing the region emerge stronger” from Covid. She also highlighted the work the company is doing to reduce emissions, investigating sustainable aviation fuels for long haul flights. “It’s our mission to use electric and hydrogen aircraft as soon as the technology is available and we’re actually hoping to have this in place at least by 2030, if not earlier.”

Skyline boss Geoff McDonald told the business lunch “those of you who are astute with numbers” will be able to see its annual results are “very modest” compared with previous years. The company announced a $72.7 million pretax profit for the year ending 31 March. But its decision to not return the $8.9m in taxpayer support, including the wage subsidy, created what McDonald described as a “social media scrum”. Shareholder John Hilhorst, in an opinion piece published on Queenstown News, said he was “deeply embarrassed” by the move, which was “unconscionable on many levels”. Hilhorst says the company has only produced higher profits on two other occasions over the past 15 years. McDonald didn’t elaborate on how the numbers could be read differently, other than to say when they were “stripped back” the result was very modest. But he said Skyline was grateful for the support from a number of sectors “that’s enabled us to continue to invest in jobs and people and keep things moving. You all understand how challenging that’s been in the rollercoaster for the last 18 months”. The company has provided about $2 million in rent relief to its downtown tenants, and McDonald said it has also continued its charity work through the Covid period. “Skyline was in quite a precarious position, I can admit it here now, just as we headed into lockdown,” he said. “We had just signed up and committed to a couple of huge capital projects.” That included the O’Connells Mall renovation project, another luge park in South Korea, and the work to build a car park and replace the gondola at its main Brecon Street site.

DFS has agreed to take two-and-a-half floors of the mall, and there will also be a food court. It is all expected to open in June 2022. Work is upcoming on the replacement base and top buildings and new gondola, but it’ll be about two years before it’s running.

One of the South Island’s top summer festivals is branching out into the snow business. Alex Turnbull is founder and director of the popular Rhythm and Alps festival, held at Robrosa Station in the Cardrona Valley. The sell-out New Year’s music festival is usually marked by the great summer weather. But this year, Alex and the Rhythm and Alps team are bringing a music festival to the slopes. Snowboxx is a festival combining music and après ski events with skiing and snowboarding, to be held in Wanaka, 7th – 14th September 2021.

After eight consecutive sold-out events in the French Alps, this will be the first time Snowboxx has made an appearance in New Zealand. “Snowboxx were looking to do something in the area and they contacted us. We decided to bring it to Cardrona and Treble Cone,” says Alex. “They’re some of the best ski resorts in the country, with great, varied terrain. And, of course, Wanaka is a beautiful location.” Alex is now 50% owner and director of the festival and he says the decision was made after going to Snowboxx in France. “Some of the Rhythm and Alps crew went and we all really liked what we saw, there was a great vibe so we decided to give it a go here.” The foray into the winter market is new for Alex and the Rhythm and Alps team. He says this has presented some of its own challenges, but there’s

also many similarities to running a summer festival. Accommodation and transport supply is often a challenge in a small town, but this is something the team are accustomed to working with. “It’s totally different: one’s summer, one’s winter. There’s similar challenges with accommodation and transport, but we have a really good team and the community is behind us.” The impact of Covid-19 has been another challenge to contend with. Snowboxx was originally scheduled for 2020. The event sold out, but when the country’s alert levels were raised, Alex and the team decided cancelling the event and refunding ticketholders was the best thing to do. The festival’s currently aimed at 20-something Kiwis who love Kiwi music. Alex says that the ability to ski is not a prerequisite: “I expect some will have never seen snow before. There’s so much to do on and off-piste.” “We’re focussing on the domestic market again this year and made the decision not to invite international acts. “Snowboxx is a well-known, international brand. It’s a week-long festival that includes accommodation, events every day and every evening. We’ll learn as we go, but we’re excited that people will be up the mountain and in town having a good time. “It’s going to be really good for the Wanaka community at a time of year that’s usually not that busy. There will be a few thousand people here and I hope it puts Wanaka on the map.”

A passion for fruit trees becomes a burgeoning business by Staff Reporter

Jeremy Smith loves fruit trees, and he is on a mission to help people enjoy them in their own gardens. The problem he sees is most people just plant fruit trees the normal way like any other plant. They quickly get too big, produce little usable fruit and become unmanageable. So, the gardener becomes frustrated and dissatisfied.” Trees don’t have to be huge to produce great fruit, Jeremy just wants to make it easy, selfreliant, and rewarding. Worldwide espalier, which simply means growing on wires, produces eighty percent of the fruit we eat today. Espalier is used to maximise production, make the trees easier to manage and easier to pick. Much of the ideas from commercial production can be adapted to the home garden, as the ideas of minimising space, maximising production and easy management are goals shared by both growers. Jeremy started his business after people kept asking him about the espalier fruit trees on his property in Kingston. Would it work for their garden? Sure, he says “it can work for you, but there are many different types of espalier and planning and a good system design that suits your garden and your needs is important at the outset. Also, you may as well start with the fruit you most want to eat and see if it can be grown here.”

From experience Jeremy has learned there are five main reasons to use espalier fruit trees at home. • Production – to grow as much fruit as possible, with the longest season each year. • Mobility – People want to control the height of the trees so they never have to use ladders. It is even possible to create espalier trees that can be maintained by a person in a wheelchair. • Privacy – Using fruit trees to screen the garden from the road or neighbours. • Softening – using rows of trees to partially hide an ugly feature in a garden like a water tank. • Structure – create separate areas in a garden, or extra emphasis to existing areas like a patio. “Most clients want a combination of these incorporated into their design, while also looking to encourage bird life and both goals are easy to achieve with espalier trees.” says Jeremy. As fruit trees last well over twenty years once planted, it is important to get the right advice at the start and set the trees on a winning path. He will come to your house, talk through your needs, and help develop a plan that fits your situation and is achievable for you. Once upon a time, independant bookshops seemed destined to be a thing of the past. With the introduction and rapid growth of online stores like Amazon in the mid-1990s, the number of independent bookshops around the world suffered a steep decline. But by 2010, community-based independent stores were making a comeback by offering what the online stores couldn’t: unique curation, community connection and a specialised customer experience.

Queenstown’s own Indie bookshop, Bound Books and Records, opened in 2014. The shop’s popularity quickly outgrew the available space.

The new shop has a stronger focus on Kiwi and local authors. There’ll also be more music and a much larger non-fiction section.

“We’ve always wanted more space,” explains Jade Becker, who owns and operates the shop alongside her partner Ollie Bombard. The opportunity to expand into the neighbouring shop, effectively doubling the floor size, came this year.

“These are all things we’ve wanted to do, but not had the space until now,” says Jade.

“The opportunity came at the scariest time it possibly could have, but we couldn’t turn it down because it might not happen again for years.” After removing the separating wall and remodelling the shop interiors, Bound Books and Records officially re-opened on Monday (12th July). “Being closed for May was strategic; it’s our quietest month. Delays have kept us closed longer than we had planned, though you can’t really claim they’re unexpected these days. We think we’re lucky that we were able to get it done how we wanted. “We’re almost twice as big! We’re expanding our

Ollie’s been reading ‘American Tabloid’ by James Ellroy on a recommendation from one of our regulars, which he is loving.” Bound Books and Records is located on Church Street and open 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
