Infrastructure Upgrades- The balance between getting the job done and immediate impact on business. If you’ve been into the town centre recently you’ll know that work on the infrastructure and street upgrades is well underway. There’s a lot happening and we absolutely understand the communities’ frustrations about disruption and the time it takes to upgrade a street. The work happening right now isn’t sexy but the end result will give the town centre a new lease of life and create a place we’ll proudly enjoy and share with our visitors. Things like temporary road closures and reduced access to parking will continue as the work progresses. But there are ways we can make it easier on ourselves and the disruption does provide a good catalyst to get us all thinking about how we travel into town. There has been significant work done over the past few years to improve the bus service to make it an affordable and genuine option for people coming in to town. And we’re not just talking about locals, we’re recommending this to visitors too. As a Council and major employer we’re encouraging staff to consider alternative ways of travelling into town and recommended other larger businesses in town to think about doing the same. Having the conversation about how staff are commuting into work and supporting initiatives that will help them plan will help with any feelings of stress or anxiety they might also be feeling about the situation. The important thing is that we all stick together, stay positive and support our local businesses. We’ve been working really closely with our business community to achieve a balance between getting the job done and managing impacts on their operations. Back in December last year, before construction began we met with many business and property owners from right across the town centre to talk about what to expect and work together to agree things like appropriate working hours. It starts to get busier in town towards the end of the week and weekends generally are the busiest times for retail, hospitality and accommodation. Part of our agreement with local businesses was to make sure construction sites are left clean and tidy on Friday evenings, and no work would happen over the weekends so that disruption was minimised over their busiest period each week. There is absolutely a place for 24/7 construction works and in some places it is the most appropriate option. But in a place like Queenstown where there is a wide mix of businesses, it’s really important we manage the impacts across the board and ensure our works are not unfairly affecting one type of business over another. Maintaining access and managing issues as they arise is crucial to the success of the programme and we’re grateful for the open dialogue and patience so far. Wayfare re-organises to become more sustainable. by Paul Taylor

Wayfare has promoted its ski fields boss Bridget Legnavsky in a shake up of its management structure.

England-Hall believes Wayfare is the first New Zealand tourism business to appoint at Chief Conservation Officer. Norris will lead conservation and sustainability initiatives across the group. Last month, he was presented with the New Zealand Order of Merit by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy, for services to tourism and conservation.

Legnavsky, the curent General Manager of Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone, will take overall responsibility for all Wayfare experiences, with a promotion to Wayfare Chief Experience Officer.

“Our founder, Les Hutchins, famously said ‘conservation is the real cornerstone of New Zealand’s tourism industry... and the right direction to go is to take more notice of conservation issues, not less’. “This newly created role does exactly that.

The move to organise the company, which includes Real Journeys and Go Orange brands, along more geographical and thematic lines sees Real Journeys GM Bridget Lenavsky get a promotion in the shakeup. Paul Norris become Chief Conservation Officer. Wayfare CEO Stephen England-Hall says the changes, especially Norris’ new role, aims to build a more sustainable business, while also creating greater connection to the local communities it operates in. The company will also appoint a Real Journeys GM for Queenstown, responsible for the TSS Earnslaw, Walter Peak, Go Orange rafting and jetboating, the water taxis and other products. Legnavsky will continue to be involved with Cardrona and Treble Cone, as part of her larger role. “Bridget is a visionary leader, with an incredible talent for building team culture to deliver an outstanding guest experience and we want to continue to ensure this is developed further across the group,” England-Hall says. “She will lead, coach and mentor a team of GM’s responsible for Wayfare’s tourism and ski experiences across their locations.” A new ski experience general manager will be appointed for the mountains, near Wanaka, reporting to her.

Mardi Gras Festival cancelled over safety fears By Staff Reporter

Thousands of disappointed festival-goers hit the bars in Queenstown Saturday night after Mardi Gras Queenstown 2021 was cancelled at the last minute. The event was due to take place in Warren Park, off Gorge Road, from 4pm to 11pm on Saturday. But heavy rain over the previous few days left the park waterlogged and unsafe. Festival owner Audiology put out a statement, about four hours before the festival was due to start. “This is going to come as a massive shock due to the current weather clearing up, however we are having to cancel the festival this evening.

Tourism and hospitality operators have let out for a cry for help as the trans-Tasman bubble pause dashes hopes of a winter visitor influx.

“If things were to go on, it’s not going to be ideal, but we’ll survive. And we’ll have work for our staff.”

Quarantine-free travel was halted until at least midnight on Tuesday due to the escalating number of Covid-19 cases across Australia.

Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Julie White said the bubble pause was “a kick in the guts” for tourism operators.

The decision coincides with the start of Australia’s school holidays and New Zealand’s ski season.

“We appreciate we need to manage the health risk, however, this comes at a cost.

Cardrona Alpine Resort general manager Bridget Legnavsky told RNZ the timing was “almost a worst case scenario”. “Obviously we expected there could be some stops and starts to this, but to have it at the start of the school holidays is a really hard one.”

“Events like this are killing hospitality and tourist businesses. For some, it’s ruin by a thousand cuts.” Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins yesterday told media Cabinet would likely discuss possible support for tourism operators when they meet today.

Legnavsky said the resort was fully staffed and prepared for full capacity, but expected to lose almost a third of its visitors if the border stayed closed. She said the longer the pause continued, the harder it would be to keep on staff without any government assistance. “I would hope there is consideration [from ministers] to the situation we’re in down here.” Queenstown apartment operator Nik Kiddle said his business had had 40 cancellations since the initial halt on quarantine-free travel from New South Wales. Kiddle - who heads a local hotelier group - said his experience was not a unique one. “From a business management point of view, it’s becoming extremely difficult to operate. “We don’t have any form of government support any more. We’ve been drawing down on savings for more than a year. “It is becoming increasingly difficult to see how we’re going to be able to survive over the next three or four quarters.” Kiddle said he would like to see the government adopt similar tourism support packages to those in Australia - including spending vouchers for the public. Skydive Franz & Fox Glacier base manager Robbie Stewart said the company lost roughly 20 bookings in a single day following the bubble announcement. But he said he expected some of those people to rebook later in the year. “We’ll survive this. My major concern is for the guys that we partner with - the smaller businesses - whether they can withstand another bang like this.” Franz Josef Wilderness Tours director Dale Burrows said he was not surprised by the bubble decision, but that did not make it hurt any less He said Australian visitors made up about half of his business. “It has been pretty tough,” Burrows said. “It’s going to have a massive impact if it was to extend.” Despite that, Burrows said he was not super comfortable asking for more help. He said he and his team could always fall back on the government’s Jobs for Nature programme, as they had in the past.

Queenstown’s tourism roadmap to consider broader community benefit. by Paul Taylor

Work has begun on a regenerative tourism plan for Queenstown Lakes which aims to create a viable future for tourism by 2030. Tourism Minister Stuart Nash announced back in May that the industry must become more sustainable, moving away from the mass tourism and its damaging impact on communities and the environment. Led by Regional Tourism Organisations, Destination Queenstown and Lake Wanaka Tourism, and working with Queenstown Lakes District Council, the community, visitor industry and stakeholders will over the next six months, focus on how the visitor economy can benefit the district’s people, environment and also its economy, rather than just its economy.

Destination Queenstown Interim Chief Executive Ann Lockhart says: “We’re moving into a new era of thinking around how to create value more broadly for the benefit of our people and our place. “A regenerative approach creates opportunities for the visitor industry to help make our home a better place over time. “While tourism in the Queenstown Lakes, and the wider business community, have experienced devastating effects from COVID-19, the pandemic has created a unique opportunity to rethink the visitor sector’s purpose, the principles by which it operates, and how success is measured.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult says that tourism has been a core industry for the Queenstown Lakes district with a strong history and spirit of innovation in the region.

“There are no pre-determined outcomes – we’re co-designing our tourism future together with innovative thinking and informed action so I encourage everyone to get involved.”

“This project aims to ensure this essence is maintained as we move into the next evolution of the industry - a regenerative future which helps us to thrive as a community, that protects and enhances our incredible environment, flora and fauna, and creates a vitality and strength into our future.”

A number of young people facing challenges from the lower South Island participated in a range of adventure activities in Queenstown last week, as part of Blue Light’s South Island activity camp, organised by local Southern Coordinator, Nicola Paterson. Seven Police Officers, one teacher and two Blue Light staff supported the 32 young people who were all at years 7 and 8 at school from Oamaru, Timaru, Gore, and Invercargill, with the focus being on building teamwork, communication, and confidence all while having fun. “I know that those young people who attended the Activity Weekend really enjoyed it, and it was a great surprise, as many of them had never been to Queenstown before,” said Nicola.

COMMUNITY NOTES New Zealand International Science Festival What does the moon, running with dinosaurs, and explosive science have in common? It’s all happening as part of this year’s New Zealand International Science Festival! Which is on next month in Dunedin during the school holidays. This years festival will be their largest and most dynamic to date. Usually a biennial event, the festival is set to run for a second consecutive year throughout Dunedin during the July school holidays (8th - 18th). After a year of disruptions due to COVID-19, and having to reduce the 2020 festival to a nano size edition its coming back bigger and better this year.

In addition, the Festival will also present a Pop Up centre to immerse yourself and be amazed by some of the latest virtual reality experiences from around the world! Walk on the moon, swim with turtles, or run amongst dinosaurs! This is an immersive experience like no other with the latest headsets on offer to play, engage and discover new worlds! To accompany the virtual reality experiences we have partnered with CODE the local gaming industry to showcase the incredible work being done in Dunedin.

With over 100 events announced, the Festival team are ‘over the moon’ about what is on offer this year, which spans a longer season of eleven days. Festival Director Dan Hendra remarked “We have received more support than ever before, which has meant that we have been able to expand the scope of what the Festival can be, and turn it into a world-class science festival - up there with the world’s biggest and best.”

Big Science Show with Amadeo returns for the first weekend of the Festival. Expect the usual bangs, pops, thrills and spills which are a part of the always popular festival event. This year, the Festival has engaged local comedian and playwright Abby Howells to write the show, and Alex Wilson to direct. Howells has just one ‘The Director’s Award” award at the NZ International Comedy Festival for her show HarleQueen.

The Festival team are really excited about: Our Moon - Then Now and Beyond, an installation artwork by British artist Luke Jerram. The work, a 4m diameter inflatable sphere with a high-resolution NASA photograph of the Moon that will be suspended inside Hanover Hall, an early 20th century red brick church, for the second halfof the Festival. The Moon will play host to a number of other events, such as yoga, the Space Frontiers Exhibition, storytime for children.

US marks Juneteenth after recognizing it as federal holiday.

The US marked its first Juneteenth on the 19th June, after recognizing it as federal holiday. Juneteenth is a holiday dedicated to the end of slavery in the United States, celebrated by African Americans since the late 19th century. US President Joe Biden signed into law the bill recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday known as “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” he said: “Great nations don’t ignore their most painful moments...Great nations don’t walk away. We come to terms with the mistakes we made. And remembering those moments, we begin to heal and grow stronger.” Kamala Harris, the first Black woman to serve as vice-president, said at the White House: “We are gathered here in a house built by enslaved people. We are footsteps away from where President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually in various parts of the United States since 1865. Juneteenth’s commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming and enforcing freedom of enslaved people in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery.

Queenstown Airport’s International Lounge reopens this week. by Jen Andrews

From this week, locals and visitors heading to Australia will once again have the option of relaxing, working or dining before the flight in the Manaia Lounge at the airport.

Queenstown Airport Corporation GM Corporate and Community Affairs Sara Irvine welcomed the Manaia team back to the airport community. “We’re delighted that our passengers will once again be able to experience Manaia’s outstanding hospitality when travelling to Australia. It’s another sign that the region is beginning to recover and rebuild.” The Manaia Lounge, Maori for protector of land, sea and sky, originally opened at Queenstown Airport in 2014 and expanded in 2016, almost doubling its passenger capacity. Located on the first floor in the International Departure Terminal with views out to the Remarkables, the Manaia Lounge caters for up to 150 guests and can be accessed with a Priority Pass, Lounge Key, Plaza Lounge or Dragon Pass. A ‘pay in’ option is also offered to all international passengers travelling on any airline. Access charges are $55 per adult and $30 per child for up to three hours. A family of 4 pass is available for $140.

The lounge has been closed since March 2020 when international flights in and out of Queenstown were halted to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Now, with the trans-Tasman bubble in place and the increasing number of travellers moving between Australia and New Zealand, lounge owner and aviation ground-handling company PlaneBiz has made the decision to reopen the lounge for passengers departing to Australian ports. PlaneBiz Station Manager Kellie Clarke (better known as KC) thanked her team, the airport community and the public for their understanding and support over the last year while the lounge was closed.

“We also have strict COVID protocols in place to keep our staff and passengers safe which include regular deep cleaning, on-site food preparation, and relevant document checks.”

It offers free Wi-Fi, a business centre as well as TV and reading areas, dining areas and dedicated bathrooms. There is also a gourmet buffet food and beverage selection featuring premium local wines and hot and cold food freshly prepared by on-site chefs.

As a trans-Tasman only international airport, Queenstown Airport currently accepts ‘green zone’ travel flights and has the approved protocols and procedures in place to safely manage direct flights to and from Australia.

Arts+Culture RAW Comedy Quest: Ever felt you’d like to try your hand at Stand-up comedy? By Tim Muller

This year the local leg of the competition will run in July and August and includes 9 shows across 5 cities/ towns, The Queenstown heat will be at Yonder on July 20th and the regional final at the Queenstown Memorial Centre on August 21st. The winner (last year this was Queenstown’s Maggie Rogers) gets direct entry into the national finals in Auckland, with travel costs covered. While not limited to first-time performers, the competition is very much open to people trying comedy for the first time and is a great opportunity for people to do so without feeling out of their depth (a good chunk of the performers will be in the same position).

Remarkably funny and Dunedin Comedy are searching for the funniest new voice in the Deep South. Aspiring comedians from across Otago and Southland will be taking to the stage this winter as NZ’s biggest open mic comedy competition gears up in the lower South Island. First Thursdays Queenstown is back – this Thursday 1 July sees more exhibitions, talks, and opportunities to meet artists in our town centre. The inaugural June event was great fun and a big success, an indication of Queenstown’s burgeoning contemporary art scene and the diversity of talent in our local area. Artbay has a solo exhibition by Cheree Te Orangaroa Downes, a Maori artist from Murihiku, Southland. Her exhibition Whetu fuses tradition with the contemporary, weaving harakeke (flax) and muka (flax fibre) with materials including metal, animal skin, and wood. A practice drawing on traditional techniques handed down through the generations, her work tells stories of how Maori identify and interact with the environment. “When I make my art, I often think about our elders who are not here anymore,” Cheree says. “I love that people can relate and connect to this in their own way. They can find themselves in it, the colours, shapes or the whole piece may relate to them, their family or their lives as a whole.” Opening and talk: At 5:30pm for First Thursdays Whetu will be opened by artist and storyteller Jeromy Van Riel. Jeromy is a respected carver who will speak to the significance of Matariki for Maori and how it affects us all environmentally and in every day life.
