How to kill a town I have just been listening to the drama proposed for Wellington on talkback radio and hearing the venting from business owners totally affected by the proposed no cars in the CBD. In principle, it is a wonderful idea and very cool for pedestrians, and the world will be a better place. However, people (local businesspeople) suffer ﬁrst for the beneﬁt of others further down the line. Queenstown would be one of those places that is under great stress, not because of covid and not because of a lack of visitors, and not because local shop owners can’t run a successful business. No, it is our council that is completely responsible for closing off most of the CBD and causing all that stress to local business owners. I’m not saying the Queenstown CBD road and underground infrastructure upgrade work doesn’t need to be done and will one day improve our lives, the problem is they are hiring contractors that won’t work to suite the requirements. Which is… to Get The Job Done!! When so much disruption and economic loss is at stake, these contracts should have stipulated that the work is 24/7 until completed. Or alternatively, start at 6pm till 6am as they would anywhere else in the world where the economy of the CBD is at risk. Including in New Zealand in places like Auckland.

But not here. This seems to be how a Queenstown contractor operates… Start, stand around, ﬁnish early, put up cones 7 days a week but don’t work the weekend. What a cluster —-k. Very few of these people would keep a job with me. And I’m also talking about QLDC councillors who must have some say in the outcome of all this renovation. And obviously the contract managers at council. Yep, I understand, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, but, come on. Parking spaces are disappearing, fences and CONES take up more space daily and the poor businesses are suffering, especially in Beach Street. Turnovers are hugely down, from covid, then road works, and only a few landlords are still compensating. So even they are affected by the poor management of these projects which have months and months to go. Does anyone in our council realise the hardship and anger and frustration these business owners are going through?

Great Walks open for bookings with ‘unprecedented demand’ experiences, great landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls and rainforest, and they’re trips of a lifetime. So it’s inevitable that some people will miss out but that’s how we manage the quality of the experience and minimise the impact of people in these areas.” It was music to the ears of the area’s tourism operators. Fiordland Historic Cruises manager Adam Butcher said the coming Great Walks season would be make or break for many. “We’re at a point now where it’s just a numbers game. At some point if the numbers don’t change in our favour then operators will not be able to continue like they’ve expected. Three of the country’s 10 Great Walks are in the area and the first bookings for Department of Conservation-operated huts on the tracks opened last week. It took just 15 minutes for accommodation on the Milford Track to fill up for the entire six-month season. Department of Conservation heritage and visitors director Steve Taylor said he had never seen anything like it. “Really we’ve seen some unprecedented demand on the Great Walks, particularly for the Milford Track which in previous years at this stage we would have seen at about 95 percent of the track being sold out. This year within 15 minutes it was completely sold out.” The Heaphy and Rākiura along with New Zealand’s other seven Great Walks were also offered through the week. Taylor said, based on the evidence, those who were keen should get in quick. “There were about 6700 people making online bookings in that first 30 minutes, so the demand is incredible. These are outstanding

“[It’s] way worse than last year. Last year was actually not all bad because once people had got out of lockdown, Kiwis started travelling,” he said. “This year they’ve done a lot of their travelling in the summer and they’re obviously waiting to see what happens in Australia so they can travel there. Or they’ve spent their money and they’re sitting at home for winter or waiting for ski season.” Compounding their pain was a lack of staff, Adams said. He had concerns that when visitors did finally show up, smaller operators might not be able to capitalise. “We need more workers. As for the tourism minister saying ‘we don’t want backpackers coming in’, it’s the silliest thing he’s ever said. The first 300 planes need to be full of backpackers that want a holiday and work because we’re desperate for them.” The government and the Department of Conservation also needed to do more to support operators over the quiet season, he said. Utilising the area’s Great Walks as cycle tracks over those periods would be a good start. For those who missed out on the Department of Conservation’s accommodation on the Milford Track, there were still options. Ultimate Hikes general manager Noel Saxon said they had spots available on their guided tours. “At this stage, we’ve limited ourselves to a shortened season and just five days a week. But we’ve got the ability to open that up again should this trans-Tasman bubble be successful and that’s looking very positive at the moment,” Saxon said. “We’ve still got plenty of space available on both the Milford and the Routeburn, but those spaces are selling and selling pretty quickly as well.” The nearby Hump Ridge Track was hoped to become New Zealand’s 11th Great Walk in the next couple of years.

But Coronet Peak is not expected to open until Saturday, June 26th, which is also The Remarkables’ scheduled opening day.

NZSki has enough snow guns to cover both its Queenstown ski fields but needs cold temperatures for the made-made snow to provide a sufficient base for skiing and snowboarding. Coronet Peak ski field area manager Nigel Kerr, sitting in front of muddy, grassy lower slopes by Coronet’s base building on Thursday, said: “As you can see behind me, these warmer temperatures of late have not been very kind to us. “And we certainly won’t be opening this Saturday as planned. We are going to slide our opening date back until we’ve got enough of a base to open, and I think it’s fair to say we’re probably thinking it’s going to be a staged opening as we go along.” Since then, the snow guns have been firing and the mountain, especially the runs, look much whiter. On Sunday, a handful of families were up near the base building playing in the snow, while a few keen skiers skinned up the runs. But there’s still not enough yet to open fully. Fortunately for the snow hounds, it’s expected to be a relatively chilly week. MetService predicts night-time temperatures of 1 degree Celsius over the next three days, with daytime temps between 9- and 11-degrees C. But the 7-day forecast signals slightly warmer weather again towards the weekend, ranging from 3-6deg C at night, and 12-15deg C in the daytime.

If you’ve seen Toyota NZ’s latest Hilux advert and thought ‘I’m sure I know them from somewhere’ - you’re right.

Queenstown people and local landmarks all feature in the Unbreakable Bond campaign for the new 2021 NZ favourite truck, which celebrates the bonds friends, a driver and their Hilux, and between Toyota and New Zealand.

The cast included Queenstown school bus driver Ted Lord, high country farmer Jez Scott, film industry worker Dean Morganty, local farmer Tony Glynn, professional mountainbiker David McMillan and Ican talent model agency owner Tracy Cameron. The advert has just won gold in the casting category of The Australasian Writers and Art Directors Awards, which is open to agencies in the Asia Pacific region and attracts thousands of entries. Local casting for the Saatchi & Saatchi NZ-run campaign was done by Queenstown casting director Jackie Gay, of Still Vision. “I stopped people at petrol stations, rocked up to hunters in carparks, put fliers on Toyotas up at ski fields when I was snowboarding and even hit a few people up on chairlifts,” she says. “Once you start street casting you can’t stop and I love it,” she says. “This region has so many authentic locals, I even arranged a casting session at the Glenorchy pub, got locals to come down for a few brews and put them in front of a camera. ‘We were supported by our local GWD Toyota branch to help find authentic Toyota owners, and with their help we auditioned some of their customers as well.”

More than 100 people auditioned in Queenstown and over 300 in Auckland, through Reel World Casting, with videos then presented to Toyota by Saatchi & Saatchi. Out of the 12-strong cast half of those picked were from Queenstown which Jackie says is a “superb” result. Shot on Queenstown Hill, the ad has hit the mark with viewers for its showcasing of different models and drivers that are part of the Hilux New Zealand ‘story’. “With more film jobs coming in this proves that there is still ‘local’ gold in those Otago hills yet to be discovered,” Jackie says.

Dear Mr Brightside. It’s roadcone city out there in that CBD. I tried to turn into Shotover Street to find a new line of road cones had formed, blocking my entry. That’s half the town cut off! Please enlighten me, because I find there to be no silver lining to this.

That reflective strip around that cone could be seen as a silver lining but you’re right, there are an awful lot of road cones. Per capita, New Zealand hoards the most road cones out of everyone in the world. We saw a grave need for their appearance during the rebuild of Christchurch. The one-way streets got road coned to noentry streets. Tight-knit road coned paths forced pedestrians to stop holding hands and walk in single file. One lonesome road cone in the middle of the road to cover a pot hole. Those orange coneheads seem to be breeding and multiplying at a rapid rate since. It was only a matter of time until they got a placement down here. Council got the town planning boardgame and have been going nuts with the mini hotels and roadcone pieces. In two swift moves the council has removed freeparking, choked the CBD and allowed a 5,000 piece Hi-Vis orchestra to start playing industry metal. But remember the tourists? Those selfie stick, dweeby, same tracksuit couples? They were everywhere and now they’re not. This pandemic has allowed a break at the intersection, so to speak, and council has floored it on infrastructure. The town was at bursting point. It couldn’t cope with 1 million people movements and rental cars cramming into our CBD. All previous attempts were a non-stick band aid approach. This crisis has provided an opportunity to seriously address the infrastructure woes with roadcones before Queenie gets populated again. Imagine trying to perform these upgrades with the town humming at full capacity? We’d get cases of jams backed up to Arrow junction and kids urinating their pants. We need to reverse our thinking on roadcones as a nuisance and see them as a reflective beacon of progress. The replacement jewel of the crown as the foundation gets worked on. You gotta lay out a bit of roadcone before you get a highway. To quote the same patronizing words as those QLDC signs but ‘an exciting upgrade is underway’. Learn to love thy roadcone, befriend them, and bring them along to your next party.

The government’s reaction to mounting immigration and labour issues since my last column simply could not have been more disappointing. Towards the middle of last month when Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi was set to make a major announcement there was hope that answers to the crippling shortage of workers in Queenstown and other parts of New Zealand would be delivered. But incredibly the Labour government only made things worse for our struggling businesses when announcing an immigration reset that would effectively put a stop to the incredible contribution both temporary and permanent migrant workers have made to the Queenstown community over several decades. In what should have been welcome news less than a month later, after being heavily criticised by National MPs, the Labour government backflipped on this major announcement. While that came as a relief, it was also delivered among other announcements that again demonstrate how out of touch the government is with immigration and workforce issues. Extensions granted to around 10,000 foreign workers on a range of temporary work visas are welcomed and it is pleasing that those in Queenstown helping to keep hard-hit businesses afloat will be able to continue to do so. But this only holds the line and does nothing to improve what can only be described in Queenstown as an employment crisis. The answer is simple, the government must let suitably skilled and vaccinated people through our borders or our businesses will continue to struggle and in some cases be forced to close. After continued pressure from National MPs the government finally saw sense and established the Trans-Tasman bubble. Similarly, We won’t be giving up the fight until more workers can get back into the country and add to the positive contribution they have made to our communities and businesses over many years. On a much more positive note, it was pleasing to see the Queenstown community deliver such an outstanding Queen’s Birthday weekend for a large influx of visitors. To see reports of as many as 50,000 people attending the Luma Southern Light Project was incredible. Everyone involved in this event should be extremely proud. It is a shame Minister Faafoi wasn’t able to see the magnificent light displays and the huge crowds for himself. Mr Faafoi needs to visit Queenstown to see the challenges immigration issues and staffing shortages have created in our town. Then he can get a true appreciation for the dire shortage of workers and his office can finally react accordingly. If both the Prime Minister and the Australian Prime Minister can make it here, then surely Mr Faafoi can, too. Health has also been a pressing issue for my office over the past month. The government continues to fall short in delivering the healthcare New Zealanders and have again missed the mark with its nearly halfbillion-dollar proposed restructuring of the health sector, that won’t be delivered for three-years. That money would be better aimed directly at upgrading facilities and services patients can access now. Paying nurses, who were forced to strike across our electorate last week, what they deserve would be a great start.

CNN’s chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour told viewers that she has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “I’ve had successful major surgery to remove it, and I’m now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best possible long-term prognosis, and I’m confident,” Amanpour said at the beginning of her daily television program. Amanpour, 63, is one of the best-known journalists in the world, in part due to her fearless coverage of international conflicts. She has been off the air for the past four weeks due to the diagnosis. In her on-air announcement, Amanpour pointed out that ovarian cancer is all too common, affecting “millions of women around the world.” - CNN

New Study Shows Maori Sailors Might Have Reached Antarctica 1,200 Years Before Europeans. After studying Polynesian oral histories, unpublished research, and wood carvings, experts now believe that the Maori sailors arrived in Antarctica more than a millennium before anyone else. The first recorded attempts to reach Antarctica came in the 1820s, with Russian sailors describing a barren landscape and treacherous frozen seas. But new research now suggests that Maori sailors got there before anyone else — 1,200 years ago. The first Maori vessel arrived at the icy and southernmost continent in the seventh century. The theory is well-founded by a combination of traditional oral histories and written ethnographic tales. A study published in the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand reveals that a chief named Hui Te Rangiora captained a vessel called Te Ivi o Atea and sailed all the way to Antarctica. Auckland has been ranked No 1 and Wellington No 4 in the 2021 annual world’s most liveable city survey. The survey classifies 140 cities across five categories including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. This this year’s survey results were highly affected by the global pandemic. Australia, Japan, and New Zealand took leading positions, while traditional cities that score well in Europe and Canada dropped in ranking significantly. This year the Global Liveability Index, by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), six of the top ten cities are in New Zealand and Australia “where tight border controls have allowed residents to live relatively normal lives”, during the covid-19 pandemic. New water treatment plant to cope with growth in Shotover Country by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is constructing a new water treatment plant in Shotover Country. QLDC General Manager Property and Infrastructure Pete Hansby says it will ensure that the growing communities of Shotover Country, Lake Hayes Estate, Ladies Mile and Frankton Flats area will have a sufficient supply of safe drinking water well into the future. The plant will be built next to the existing Shotover Country borefield near Headley Drive, with new pipelines connecting to the existing bore as well as the water infrastructure on Old School Road. Construction is due to start Monday, June 21, and is expected to take about 10 months. Work involves earthworks, construction of three new bores, and four new borehead enclosures, as well as the construction of the water treatment plant and installation of UV disinfection reactors and chlorine dosing equipment. Hansby says there may be some minor disruptions for those living nearby the construction site including an increase in construction traffic and noise. “Intermittent noise can be expected however every effort will be made to keep it within permitted construction limits. The team will also be putting a strong focus on controlling dust and sediment while the work is underway. “For safety reasons, a section of the Queenstown Trail will be temporarily shifted towards the river approximately 10 metres from the current site. We’ll have plenty of signage in place so trail users know where to go and the original trail will be reinstated at the end of the project. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of residents while we complete this important work for our current and future local communities.” Once construction is complete, the area will be landscaped with a diverse range of native species, carefully chosen to help minimise any visual effects of the building. Fencing will also be put in place around the building and borefield area.

Arts+Culture Watch out: Chopper is back! By Bethany Rogers

Comedian Heath Franklin aka Chopper is heading over the ditch for some unfinished business. His tour ‘The Silencer’ was postponed during last year’s madness – but he’s back with additional tour dates. The new tour includes Queenstown and he’ll be at the Queenstown Memorial Centre on 23rd June, 7:30pm (tickets $42 via Eventfinda). We gave the award-winning Australian actor, comedic performer and improviser a call for a quick history lesson and to find out more about the man behind the mo.

For those of us not from Australia: who is Chopper?! Why impersonate him? Chopper was a career criminal working around the Melbourne area. He also had a penchant for self-publicity. When most people leave the courts, they have their hood over their head. Chopper would run over to have his photograph taken and answer questions. They made a movie about him in 2001, which launched Eric Banner’s career. As a university student, I watched the movie too many times and absorbed it. We’d do impersonations when we were out drinking and that sort of thing. Then I started thinking about putting together a show and people seemed to like it. One thing led to another… and here I am!

Did you ever meet the real Chopper? I did. I was put together with him for a photoshoot for Zoo Magazine (if you remember that mag… it was a cross-between girls in bikinis and people’s photographs of injuries from boating accidents). They got us together for a photoshoot… and it was awesome. He’s got real tattoos and real scars from stab wounds and of course, missing ears. Then there I was with my drawn-on Sharpie tattoos, a fake moustache and tracksuit pants from The Wearhouse. It was weird. He kept insisting that if I wanted to do a proper job of impersonating him, I should cut my own ears off. But I wasn’t into that… it would have narrowed my options for other roles.

Was this show originally scheduled for last year? Yes, it was. Then the world went mad. I’m excited to finally tour New Zealand again. International travel is, for me, a sign that the world is getting back to normal a little bit. I think the last time I was in Queenstown was 2014… it has been a while. One of the advantages about re-scheduling the show is that I’ve been able to add dates to my New Zealand tour and Queenstown is one of them. I hope I pack appropriately…

TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCING APPLE ICLOUD+ On Monday, June 7, Apple gave its annual keynote to the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in Las Vegas and there was some big news. Apple announced a new privacy-focused set of features called iCloud+. The features will be rolled out free of charge to existing iCloud subscribers in the third quarter of 2021. iCloud+ includes internet traffic encryption, burner email addresses, and better support for home security cameras. iCloud+ is the new name for a premium iCloud subscription. Apple is not raising the price of iCloud, and anyone who currently pays for an iCloud storage plan can take advantage of the new features. With iCloud+, Apple has introduced three new standout features: Private Relay, Hide My Email, and unlimited HomeKit Secure Video recording. Anyone who currently pays for iCloud storage will be automatically moved onto an iCloud+ plan at no extra cost. iCloud Storage quotas weren’t changed with the announcement of iCloud+. The free iCloud tier is still limited to 5GB of storage and doesn’t include any iCloud+ benefits.

Private Relay: Apple’s Take on a VPN @QLDCSportRec

The standout feature of iCloud+ is called Private Relay, and it’s Apple’s take on a VPN. The feature seeks to protect your identity online by encrypting all traffic that leaves a device, effectively hiding your online activity from internet service providers, governments, and snoopers. Like a VPN, all traffic is encrypted. This means that if someone were to intercept traffic, for example, by using a man-in-the-middle attack on a public wireless network, they would still need to decrypt the data to see what you’re doing. It’s not yet clear what level of encryption Apple is going for with Private Relay.

MICROSOFT WILL CEASE SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS 10 IN 2025

With a new version of Windows, potentially called Windows 11, scheduled to launch by the end of June, Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end in 2025. It means that the latest updated version of Windows 10 will cease to be supported for updates and security as the company pushes towards its newer OS (operating systems) offerings. When a company stops updating an operating system, referred to as End of Life (EOL), it usually means that the operating system is essentially dead, and users will be encouraged to move to a successor. Microsoft has scheduled a special event on June 24 where there is likely to be an official announcement regarding the successor of Windows 10. It is also reported that Microsoft has also been working on a new app store for Windows in recent months, and rumours have suggested Microsoft will open its store up to all apps and rival payment platforms.

That’s quite big when you consider Kelsey’s life has already included Superyachts, world travel and a professional mountain biking career. Kelsey volunteers for Presbyterian Support Southland’s Family Works Buddy Programme in Queenstown. In this role she is paired with a young person who she helps out in life. “We hang out. We bike, bake and do chores. Simple things. We talk a lot too. I love showing her that she has amazing options in life.” Born and raised in Invercargill Kelsey had a happy childhood.”We were a super sporty family. Always doing things and having adventures. It wasn’t about money.” Fast tracking her degree in Dunedin Kelsey joined the tantalising world of Superyachts in the South of France. “I was everything from deckhand to stewardess, watersports supervisor to maid.” On moving to Canada Kelsey travelled the world as a nanny “We went to Colorado, Mexico, Monaco but the biggest takeaway for me was the connection I felt with those four kids. So much so that it took me about a year to finally leave the job after I decided to come home!” Kelsey chose to settle in Queenstown. She packs a lot into life. Working as a real estate agent she is also a sponsored mountain bike rider. Her passion is to promote women’s freestyle mountain biking. “There are some incredible women riders coming through and we are really gaining traction in changing the perception of it being a male sport.” The Family Works Buddy Programme has filled a gap left by the nanny family she loved. “My cousin was a Buddy when I was young and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Her Buddy really looked up to her.”

The one question to ask yourself to fall back in love with your life Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland

To be successful there’s one question that will tell you a lot about yourself and you might not like the answer. Falling back in love with my life was a big goal for me 6 years ago, having had surgery to remove a cancerous kidney, then a long cancer journey with my late husband, life seemed to be just getting too much. I took time away from my passion and business to find myself and learn from the curve balls that had hit.

Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland runs an International Neural CodingTM Company. She has 20 Neural Coders working with her around the globe, online to help people identify their problem, delete it and install neural coding that empowers them.

I knew I had to fall back in love with my life and the first thing I did was ask myself a question, let me ask you the same one. It is important to answer with your first gut response, ready? “Are you great at starting things, changing things or finishing things?” Depending on your answer will depend on your results in life and how much you love your life. If you said I am a great starter then you probably have great enthusiasm for new ideas, you are creative and love to take a risk or two. Yet, down the track you haven’t finished what you started, it’s lost its’ shine and you are onto the next thing. If you said changing things then you are on track but then change direction half way through, this shows you are flexible, yep, you can spin on a dime. Yet the end goal, the outcome you aimed for at the beginning has now morphed into something else, sameness, nothing new, nothing actually has changed. I used Neural Coding® mindsets to help me fall back in love with my life, one of them was to create a future memory, bring things into my life that would create joy, hope, learnings and growth. HERE’S HOW NOT TO GET A LIFE YOU LOVE... 1) Decide what you want. 2) Work out what you need to do to get it. 3) Put together an action plan. 4) Have progress checks to ensure you’re on track. Sound familiar? Dull as dishwater hey? And not effective, these are common steps in standard goal-setting and there are two major problems with this method. One, it relies totally on a conscious process and does nothing to engage the unconscious mind, so breaking old destructive habits and making new, better ones is going to be hard going. Two, it accepts the initial goal you decide upon without question. When we set ourselves a goal or a challenge it is important to know that usually, the goals we come up with for the first step aren’t what we really want. Life is all about emotions, not goals, all they do is create the emotion we are after, this in turn brings a new love of life. For example, if your goal is to run a 5km race, what makes you really want to do it? Is it to feel you’re doing your part for charity? Is it to feel satisfied that have an exercise regime that’ll make you feel fitter, stronger, younger and full of life? It’s important to dig deep to discover the emotions behind your goals. It’s the emotion behind any goal that gives us a life that is full. That’s why if you can identify it and work out what you’re really after, what emotion is going to bring you happiness, feel alive, love your life again? Challenges are great, you are always much more that you think you are, experiencing that first hand builds confidence, self esteem, amazement and you will learn heaps at the same time. What is it that you need to do to fall in love with your life? What makes you feel good? What gets you excited? Emotions are the key, not goals.

Hard-to-beat, home-grown strawberries In my opinion, strawberries, like many fruit and veg, just seem to taste juicier and better when you’ve grown them yourself. So, every winter I like to ensure we have a good strawberry patch set up to enjoy in summer. Sometimes that means creating a whole new strawberry patch and other years I just top up my existing patch with new plants. There are two varieties (Camerosa and Ventana) that we would describe as good home-garden varieties that produce sweet, medium to largesized fruit but the Ventana strawberries have more of a conical shape to them. Some gardeners like specific varieties, but if you’re starting out and have no preference we would recommend any of these varieties. Each regular-sized bundle has around four plants which should produce between 60 -100 strawberries come Christmas. I recommend planting as many strawberry plants as you can fit – I don’t think you can ever have too many strawberries! Once you’ve got your plants you need to decide where to plant them. The great thing about strawberries is they can be grown in pretty much any sized garden. Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a big raised garden box you can grow them in. But if you’re not, there are still plenty of options for growing strawberries. They grow well in hanging baskets, cut-off drain pipes, pots, wooden pyramids and more. There are loads of ideas for strawberry growing on Pinterest. As long as they can see the sun, and where you’re planting is well-drained, you can expect healthy-growing plants that produce lots of fruit.

If you’re planting in a pot or hanging basket, use a good potting mix and an extra boost of liquid fertiliser or again just use one of the Tui strawberry products. Before planting in the garden raise your bed by mounding the soil. This will encourage circulation, drainage and can add depth to shallow soil. Plant your seedlings around the edges of your garden or pots to encourage the strawberries to hang over the sides and prevent the fruit from touching the ground and rotting. Dig a hole 10cm deep and place the seedling inside. A deep hole is required to give the roots plenty of room to spread out and grow but be careful not to bury the plant. Pack the soil ﬁrmly around each seedling and surround it with pea straw or newspaper to help keep away weeds. Place netting or wire over your plants when they begin to produce fruit. This will block out birds and ensure you get to eat the strawberries yourself. In spring, add another dose of general fertiliser or Tui Strawberry Food to your strawberries to encourage sturdier plants that are more disease resistant heading into the warmer months. Come Christmas you’ll be able to put your strawberries to the test and decide for yourself whether home-grown really does taste better. And remember your strawberry plants will be most productive in their second year.

When you’ve found just the right spot or spots, prepare the soil by digging in a general fertiliser that’s rich in potassium. Something like Tui Strawberry Food already has the extra potassium – this will help stimulate plant growth and big, juicy fruit.

Job Advertisements surge in May? Job Openings are at an all time record according to data released by JobFix with 537 open positions being advertised in May. This is the highest May number recorded and represents a 13.5% increase in jobs advertised over April. May 2020 only recorded a total of 17 roles available as NZ was just coming out of lockdown. By comparison the May 21 total of 537 open roles compared with 489 [+9%] in May 2019 and 503 [+5.7%] in 2018.

As has been well reported the staff shortage has employers being very creative about how they differentiate themselves including hotels offering above award salaries AND free accommodation as an incentive. Signing bonuses are also not unheard of at present.

Our dynamic accommodation business is looking for a Hostel Manager to assist in managing our operation. The role requires someone with fantastic people and time management skills, a responsible attitude, and be willing to problem-solve.
