Government is working proactively with sectors to fill critical skill shortages. First of all I want to acknowledge the challenges and difficulties COVID-19 travel and border restrictions have placed on businesses across many sectors of New Zealand, especially in the primary sector, tourism and hospitality. But the controls on New Zealand’s borders and our strict managed isolation and quarantine regime are key reasons why businesses have been able to operate. That has meant having to adapt and it has highlighted vulnerabilities for businesses which have traditionally drawn workers from the likes of backpackers and migrants. The numbers tell a stark reality. Normally we would have around seven million people enter New Zealand each year. Between March last year and March this year, just 165,000 people came here. Our collective efforts and commitment to the Government’s COVID elimination strategy has allowed us to slowly but safely begin opening back up to our close neighbours. I hope many Australians take up the opportunity their Prime Minister did recently to visit Central Otago. Our collective efforts have allowed us, where we can, to make exceptions to allow specified numbers of critical workers to come in under the COVID controls which have kept us safe. That has seen some 14,000 critical workers cross our borders to help support New Zealand businesses and the economy. We have also just extended Working Holiday and Supplementary Seasonal Employer visas by six months to allow approximately 10,000 temporary workers to stay here and work in sectors like hospitality and tourism. New Essential Skills visas for jobs paid below the median wage have returned to 12 months (from six) taking them back to pre-COVID settings. And we have further delayed the stand-down period for these jobs until July 2022. That is on top of the border exceptions granted to thousands of seasonal workers for New Zealand’s horticulture and wine industries. We are working proactively with sectors to fill critical skill shortages under our border restrictions. In the ski industry, for example, out of applications for nearly 50 ski industry workers, all but three have been approved for critical worker border exceptions. The pandemic has reinforced the need to rethink how our economy operates; where and how we access workers; how we better invest in jobs and skills training; how we offer better career development and provide attractive pay packages and working conditions. That does not mean access to migrant workers will stop under new immigration settings. It means both business and government need to look at how we transition to a more resilient workforce that can withstand the sorts of disruption that COVID has created. The Government is committed to having those conversations with sectors to make the transition to better balanced immigration settings. Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi

in GDP, about a quarter of Otago’s total GDP. It is home to an estimated 44,800 people, 19% of Otago’s population.
The TSS Earnslaw on her own contributes 1% of Queenstown Lakes District’s transport-related greenhouse gas emissions, according to data released this week.
Yet, even with international flights and tourism, according to the data the district is responsible for only 10% of Otago’s gross emissions of 5,821,025 tCO2e.
Otago Regional Council’s first Otago Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory estimates the much-loved Queenstown icon smoked out 4,076 tonnes of CO2e, between July 2018 and June 2019.
Queenstown’s net emissions, when GHG sequestration through forestry etc. is taken into account, is 438,591 tCO2e, which is 13.7% of Otago’s 3,180,627 tCO2e net emissions.
Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is a standard unit for counting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions regardless of whether they’re from carbon dioxide or another gas, such as methane.
Gross and net emissions for the Dunedin City District are estimated at 1,250,047 tCO2e (21%) and 1,033,802 tCO2e (32%) respectively.
Gross emissions for the Queenstown Lakes District are estimated at 600,895 tCO2e. Transport is the highest emitting sector, accounting for 45% of gross emissions. On- and off-road transport accounts for 60%, and aviation accounts for 38% of sector emissions. That includes all international flights, while previous studies by Queenstown’s own council did not. The GHG inventory, prepared for Otago Regional Council (ORC) by consultants Ernst & Young, makes a point of highlighting the steamship’s contribution. “The coal fired TSS Earnslaw, which operates on Lake Wakatipu, is estimated to generate 4,076 tCO2e, or 1% of total transport emissions for the district,” it reads. The TSS Earnslaw (twin screw steamship) is the oldest passenger carrying coal-powered steamship in the Southern Hemisphere. She was launched in the same year as the RMS Titanic, 1912. She’s owned by Real Journeys, a subsidiary of Queenstown tourism giant Wayfare, and makes the journey to Walter Peak farm, 45 minutes each way, three to four times a day, depending on the season. She’s currently out of the water for her annual maintenance, on a temporary dry dock in Kelvin Heights, from May 3 to June 25. Wayfare CEO Stephen England-Hall, who was until recently the boss of Tourism NZ, says: “We’re committed to ensuring she continues to offer a unique heritage experience to be enjoyed for another century or more. “We have made a number of modifications over the years to mitigate the smoke and emissions and are currently investigating further options, as we develop our group programme to move towards becoming carbon neutral.” In 2019, the Queenstown Lakes economy generated $3.3 billion
The GHG inventory estimates that the agriculture industry, particularly sheep and beef activities, is the primary source of emissions in Otago across four of the five districts, at 3,774,184 tCO2e gross. For more see page 9.

He also used the manual inflation pipe to try to inflate the Nii’s lifejacket, after the red handle didn’t work, but it would only partially inflate. He dived again to remove the main harness completely and cut the remaining tangled lines from around their own legs. He lost sight of the rider after about four minutes in the water, then was rescued by a small boat after a total of about 13 minutes of treading water. The summary says rescuers arrived quickly but could not find the tandem rider (along with attached harness and lifejacket). The report found the NZONE’s “lack of a maintenance and inspection programme for lifejackets introduced a risk to the operation”. There was no need for recommendations to the company, however, as it has already improved its policy and procedures for the safety issues identified. The Commission does make a host of other recommendations though. It recommends that to get an initial parachutists’ certificate, parachutists should practice landing in water.
A final report into a Queenstown skydive accident which killed American tourist Tyler Nii has found his lifejacket did not inflate enough to keep his head above the water of Lake Wakatipu. It also found the tandem skydive master was not wearing a lifejacket, “which decreased their ability to remain afloat”.
They also “need to consider and mitigate the additional risks of unintentional landing in water when they are parachuting near a significant body of water”. And it recommends a review of rules governing operating parachutes, and adventure aviation and parachuting, and the process of reporting accidents.
Nii, 27, died in January 2018 on a tandem commercial skydive with Queenstown company NZONE. His body has never been found. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission’s found the tandem pair experienced a double malfunction of their UPT Micro Sigma parachute and crash-landed into the Kingston arm of the lake. “The main parachute opened unevenly with suspension lines twisted,” reads a summary. “The tandem master couldn’t correct the line twist, so cut away the main chute and deployed the reserve. “Tension knots made some lines shorter than others, distorting the reserve chute canopy, causing the tandem pair to spin fast. “Just before hitting the lake, the tandem master managed to ease the spin rate and thus reduced the force of impact.” When they hit the lake, the tandem master stayed afloat despite not being equipped with a lifejacket.

“The rider’s lifejacket did not inflate enough to support the rider’s head above water.” It could not conclusively determine why the lifejacket did not inflate sufficiently, although possible reasons include a manufacturing fault, an empty or loose gas bottle, or damage on impact. The pair hit the water at about 50 to 70kmph. They were submerged during the initial impact and the canopy and suspension lines came to rest on top of them. The report details how the tandem master released the rider’s harness and pushed him towards the surface. But the reserve parachute lines had become entwined around both of their legs. The tandem master retrieved a hook knife from the rider’s harness and started to cut the lines, while also trying to remove the main harness and reserve chute, while treading water.

More chemicals and less grit to stop ice on roads over winter. This winter QLDC is expanding it’s use of Calcium Magnesium Acetate on our roads. Calcium Magnesium Acetate is a chemical that stops ice from forming. It is biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and non-corrosive. Typically, a combination of grit and CMA, is used but last year QLDC trialled more extensive use of CMA, and less grit in Arrowtown and the surrounding area. Feedback was 95% positive. This winter the plan is to expand the area by adding a new 6000L CMA applicator to the fleet and decommissioning one grit truck.
The Wakatipu Presbyterian Church is hosting an INTERNATIONAL PARTY with the purpose of celebrating the diversity we have in our community, putting together traditional food, clothing and performances from a variety of immigrant communities alongside those who carry the European and Kiwi heritage. At the same time, we will raise funds for the Wakatipu Presbyterian Church, a Christian community committed to the wellbeing of all nationalities represented in its membership. Queenstown is getting back on its feet after the downturn last year when many people lost their jobs and this would be a chance to form new relationships and celebrate the hope of better days. So far we have Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Philippines, Korea, NZ, Australia and the UK being represented. All nationalities are invited to participate with us.
Currently QLDC is waiting on a delayed shipment of CMA supplies into the country, so for now they are using last year’s reserves which should cover the coldest spots across the wider Wakatipu basin, from SH6 to Arrowtown, Gorge Road, and Coronet Peak. When the shipment arrives, it will enable the expansion of the use of CMA to include all last year’s trial area. CMA lasts for up to seven days, compared to grit which can be displaced by traffic onto the verge after an hour. The downside is that it can be washed away in the rain, and it leaves the road slippery for a short period of time before it dries out (so it’s appled it early in the morning before traffic picks up). It also only works to about minus five degrees, so on very cold days grit is still used CMA is not the silver bullet, driving with care on those super cold days is highly recommended. QLDC
The public will be delighted with a massive variety of food to be sold in small portions. The idea is that everyone will have the opportunity to try new things from different cuisines. Wow, there’s a lot of love for the TSS Earnslaw out there. On Friday, I wrote a story about how consultants commissioned by Otago Regional Council to inventory the region’s greenhouse gas emissions had singled out the Lady of the Lake (see p04). They estimate she is responsible for 1% of Queenstown Lakes district’s transport-related emissions, even including international flights. Now, nowhere in the story did it say the consultants, or ORC, were suggesting she be retired. But, where there’s erm, smoke, there’s fire, and singling her out probably amounts to the same thing. Shared on Facebook, the reaction to the story was one of near unanimous outrage, 500 comments ranging from spirited defences of Ernie and the need to retain the district’s working heritage, to the inevitable ‘PC gone mad’, and suggestions we’ll soon have our farts metered. Many highlighted how the Earnslaw’s C02e emissions were a drop in the ocean compared to Chinese power stations, White Island, and NZ’s increasing use of coal to generate electricity. Others launched flat out attacks on the Prime Minster, her accomplices in the media (wait, they mean me!), and councillor Niki Gladding, who raised her head above the parapet to suggest we have a discussion about all this. I’ve nothing against the Earnslaw, except her appearance in the horrifically bad Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but in the interests of balance, and because I’m contractually obliged to do a bit more shilling for Jacinda, I’ll make the case for taking her out of the water. According to Real Journeys website, TSS Earnslaw uses 1 tonne of coal every hour and travels 1.5 times the circumference of the Earth each year. That’s 60,000km. On those journeys, she produces, according to the ORC consultants Ernst & Young, 4,076 tonnes of C02e. That’s the same as 886 cars driving for a year, or enough power for nearly 500 homes for a year, or the same amount of carbon sequestered by about 2,020 hectares of forest over a year. It just seems a bit, well, indulgent. Here we are declaring climate emergencies, banning new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, ditching gas appliances, and cutting the number of sheep and cows, but at the same time we’re going for joyrides on a boat with a huge black cloud of smoke trailing behind us. And I don’t buy the argument that it won’t make a difference. Like everything else where global action is required, it’s everyone doing their bit. When the hole in the ozone layer was discovered in 1985, you could make the argument that your individual deodorant was ‘doing very little, actually’ to make the hole bigger. Hey, maybe it is symbolic, but what a symbol it would be. If it requires sacrifice, she can be one of our sacrifices. By the time they build the Thompson St bypass, above Marine Parade, she’ll be about 120 years old, well due a rest. Maybe the council could set aside some land there and RJs could turn her into a restaurant, or a museum even, marking the end of the fossil fuel age and the decisions we all made to change the future.

Burn-off pollution complaints up by Paul Taylor
Otago Regional Council is reminding outdoor burners of Air Plan rules as pollution complaints increase by nearly 50%. In the 12 months to June 1, 2021, ORC received 355 complaints about outdoor burning, up over 242 complaints in the preceding year. With the open fire season underway, the council’s pollution team has been busy responding to complaints of outdoor burning causing offensive or objectionable air pollution for neighbouring properties. ORC compliance manager Tami Sargeant says there are no loopholes for air pollution: if your smoke is noxious or dangerous, or is having an offensive or objectionable effect on your neighbours, you must extinguish your fire immediately.

“We understand there’s a need for some rural properties to undertake a controlled burn-off, however, if that smoke crosses your property boundary and has a nuisance effect on your neighbours, you will be in breach of Otago’s Air Plan rules. “It’s good that we’re being notified of these non-compliant burn-offs, but it would be even better if property owners picked the most appropriate days to undertake them and minimise air pollution for their neighbours,” Ms Sargeant says. “The Air Plan rules are in place to protect the community from unnecessary health and environmental impacts.”

Join this Catalyst Korero with Queenstown kaumatua Darren Rewi. Maori came to the Whakatipu basin some 900 years ago, drawn by its natural wonders. A multitude of taonga from moa to tuna (eel) and abundant plant life drew them for seasonal food gathering. They also found abundant pounamu, the greenstone used for weaponry, jewellery and trade. First came the descendants of Waitahanui, migrating down from Whakatu/Nelson. Then about the 13th Century, Ngati Mamoe moved south from Heretaunga/Hastings. Ngai Tahu, descendants of Tahu Potiki from northern Hawkes Bay, were the third and final wave of iwi moving into the Whakatipu. They initially favoured a strategy of conquest to dominate the previous two iwi. When this stalled, intermarriage became the way to gain the right to mana whenua – tribal authority – over much of the South Island. Each migratory wave brought their own place names and narratives to honour their ancestors and their connection to the land, and through these stories they laid claim to the whenua. Local kaumatua Darren Rewi will tell us of the three waves of iwi migrating south into the Whakatipu and the place names and stories they brought with them to honour their ancestors. The resultant narrative layers that lie in our landscape also weave into the story of Ngai Tahu gaining mana whenua, or tribal authority, over much of the South Island. Pressure is growing on New Zealand’s migrant community as they endure lengthy waits for residency, uncertainty over their status, and the Government signals a move away from ‘low skilled’ migrant labour. Thousands of people born overseas are living in limbo in Queenstown and across NZ. While the topic of immigration is a mash of confusing bureaucratic terms, behind every ‘skilled migrant category visa’ is a person balancing stress and hope as they look to their future. Irish migrant Rebecca Ward, who moved to NZ is 2016 and works as a disability support worker, has written to LWB with a poem which aims to convey how migrants are feeling about the current situation. Jet-boat firm must pay $310,000 over Skippers crash by Paul Taylor
Skippers Canyon Jet Ltd has been fined $50,000 and ordered to pay $260,000 in reparations for a jet-boat crash that injured 10 people. Maritime NZ prosecuted the Queenstown company under the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015) for failing to ensure the health and safety of the jet-boat’s passengers and crew. The crash report, released by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission earlier this year, revealed the jet-boat Discovery II hit a canyon wall on the Shotover River following steering failure, on February 22, 2019. Along with the skipper, the passenger sustained varying degrees of injuries, from bruising and lacerations to joint dislocation and broken bones. One woman was actually thrown from the boat in the crash. She received the most serious injuries, with the impact fracturing her knee, which required reconstructive surgery and months of rehabilitation. Maritime NZ Investigations Manager Tracy Phillips says the case clearly shows the risks to staff and passengers when maintenance is not done in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. “This is a preventable accident which was caused by incorrectly torqueing the nuts holding together components of the jet unit.

The TAIC report detailed that just prior to the crash, the Discovery II’s skipper made a left-hand turn while passing Skipper’s Bridge and was preparing to zig-zag through a sharp double bend when he discovered the boat’s steering had locked. Realising the impact was inevitable, he yelled “brace” and the boat collided with the canyon wall at approximately 20-30 kilometres an hour, throwing one passenger into the water. The time between steering failure and collision was five seconds. The skipper made a mayday call, pulled the passenger thrown into the water back on board, beached the boat and started administering first aid to the passengers. Upon sentencing in Queenstown District Court last week, Judge Russell was clear that the failure to use a torque wrench was a bad error. He said that with any adventure tourism, paying customers will expect some risk, but are entitled to assume that the equipment is maintained properly. He accepted MNZ’s submission that the risk of jet-boating on this river is high and inherently dangerous as the boat is travelling at speed in a winding narrow passage. The judge said that the risks of failure of equipment are serious, but it is an activity that can be done safely.

Two farmers found the largest dinosaur ever unearthed After over a decade of excavation and analyzing, researchers at the Queensland Museum and Eromanga Natural History Museum have classified fossil remains unearthed near Cooper Creek in 2006 at the Eromanga Basin in southwest Queensland, as a new species of dinosaur, Australotitan cooperensis, or “the southern titan,” belonging to the genus titanosaur. The dinosaur is the largest ever found in Australia and one of the largest in the world. Robyn and Stuart Mackenzie spotted what appeared to be massive black rocks while riding motorbikes on their farm, only to discover on closer inspection, they were bones. Researchers found its shoulder blades, pelvic bones, and limbs mostly intact. Titanosaurs are longnecked herbaceous sauropod dinosaurs and were some of the largest dinosaurs that ever existed. While other titanosaur species have been found in Australia before, Cooper is significantly larger. It is estimated that Cooper weighed 63 tonne, stood at two stories tall, and measured 26 to 30 meters in length - The Guardian

QT BUSINESS Fewer Visitors - Tourism’s oncoming New Normal by AJ Mason, Errant astrophysicist, geek-in-residence, usual suspect.
The world is full of hard truths, some of them - as Al Gore puts it - entirely inconvenient. A core hard truth, first recognised last century, is that a business-as-usual approach to climate change will lead to catastrophe. At least we’re no longer playing denial politics by driving tractors up parliament steps, instead starting to take action; actions with necessarily fundamental consequences. Having ignored our 30-year window for a hard, but perhaps manageable, transition, our only option now is a “crash program”. Sweeping changes across all sectors of the global economy, both intense and immediate. It’s easy to get lost in the sheer scale of this change, but perhaps one number brings it into focus: US$ 250. MIT is one of the world’s foremost technical universities, and their Sloan School of Management is a similarly leading, hard core business school. Taking a practical business approach, they’ve focussed on anticipating policy and business response to climate change. Their research shows a carbon price will be needed (either direct or indirect), one significantly exceeding US$ 250/ton - perhaps ~$400. Energy will get expensive, we will have to work out how to consume far, far less. This has sweeping relevance, from urban design to lifestyle choices, but of particular local relevance:
An economy class, round trip passenger from LA or Beijing to Auckland ‘costs’ 3.5t carbon; from London it’s 6.7t. We can expect tickets to increase by over $2,000 to LA or Beijing, $3,500 to London, just on fuel
(even more across the whole supply chain). The supply-and-demand energy market means such increases apply even if we do develop zero emissions planes or sustainable fuels. These changes are not decades away. They are overdue now: The NZ Climate Commission is tasked with tackling our international aviation emissions in 2024 - internationally CORSIA (the current exemption for aviation) expires in 2032. Our current Covid experience - with a modest few Australians as our only significant international tourism - is most likely not a once-in-a-century aberration, but the rapidly oncoming “new normal”. Given this hard, inconvenient truth I’m surprised we’re still discussing bulk long haul tourism vs lower consumption options as if we have a choice. Our previous inaction has already made that choice. Our only question is whether we prepare for the new reality or continue to play the ostrich - but if we stick our head in the sand, we don’t get to pretend surprise when beheaded. That’s why the announcement of the Queenstown Research and Innovation Park [QRIP] represents such a huge step change on the path to Queenstown’s future. It makes tangible what some of us have been working towards for decades, and it takes our first significant step toward preparing for the new reality. Government have supported QRIP for exactly that reason, and have announced more, similar support to come. Technology development and research is universally recognised as one of the highest productivity sectors (in its own right, but also in its impacts upon the sectors for which it researches and develops). activities will offer high paid, low consumption employment; in the highest productivity sector rather than the lowest; in the business of solving problems rather than exacerbating them. Beyond its walls it triggers a critical opportunity to start the ball rolling toward our entire economy becoming high value and resilient, delivering better wellbeing for all. Even beyond upside opportunity, there’s also downside protection: An economic lifeline against the catastrophe that will happen if we try to use our businessas-usual to navigate the oncoming new normal. The challenge for us all is to seize the opportunity QRIP unlocks, and ensure we make the most of this chance for transition. Queenstown chases Tech Future by Paul Taylor
Outside Remarkables Park Ltd’s Queenstown headquarters late last month, about 100 metres away from a huge hole in the ground, sat a jet-black Porsche Tycan with acid green brake calipers. The German auto manufacturer’s $360k flagship electric sports saloon could soon become a familiar sight around these parts, parked up next to edgy wedgy Tesla Cybertrucks and Rivian SUVs. The hole in the ground is being filled with a $45 million Queenstown Research & Innovation Centre, which aims to attract world class tech talent to the town, who have a fondness for such cutting-edge vehicles. Inside RPL headquarters, about 50 high-powered people were listening to Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, RPL executive chair Alastair Porter and venture capitalist Sir Hermann Hauser talk through the benefits of the centre. The Government and RPL are “leveraging each other’s capital” to build the 6000sqm of offices and facilities, says Porter, with RPL’s $22.5 million outlay matched by a Government loan.
The goal is to capture a sizeable chunk of an industry that is already worth more than $12 billion per annum nationally, and also push it on to greater heights. International tourists, by contrast, bring in about $17bn annually to NZ. Hauser will chair the Research & Innovation Advisory Board and one look at his CV shows how seriously everyone is taking the project. He’s known as the father of Silicon Fen - the technology belt around Cambridge in the UK, which is now home to 6,500 high-tech companies, employing more than 70,000 people.

“Only seven of those had anything to do with me,” Hauser told RPL’s audience, with a playful false modesty.
Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson agreed. He told the audience his approach to politics was to build “social capital”, which is what has helped NZ come through Covid.
Hauser gained a PhD in physics from Cambridge before co-founding pioneering UK company Acorn Computers in the late 70s, co-founding the Cambridge Innovation Network, and becoming a renowned venture capitalist. “I was very fortunate to be in Cambridge at a time when the development of Cambridge was not that much different from here, a little bit further ahead but not a lot.” There was no venture capital, practically no spinouts from the university and “no expectation or idea that 30 years later” it could become what it has. “So, to have the opportunity to get involved in the very beginning again of a new cluster is delightful.” Austrian-born Hauser has spent the past 15 months running his UK venture capitalist firm from his farm outside Auckland, something he didn’t think would be possible before Covid, but illustrates the possibilities of remote working in the 21st century. That would seem to run counterintuitive for the need for a physical bricks and mortar, or steel and glass, tech hub. But Hauser says the key is to create an innovation environment, something which will lead to the exponential growth of talent, the companies themselves, and an ecosystem of companies. “Making a technology cluster work is a team sport,

The seeds of those connections were already being planted. The audience included Chancellor of the University of Otago Dr Royden J Somerville QC, who spent two days in Queenstown discussing the possibilities with RPL, along with Southern Institute of Technology’s senior management team. Also in the room were billionaire Xero founder Rod Dury, globally recognised AI and robotics expert Neil Jacobstein, high-flying local entrepreneurs such as MedRecruit’s Sam Hazeldine, and various local politicians and business leaders. Dury questioned Robertson on tech visas, as Xero hopes to employ 10 new machine learning and AI specialists from overseas on the condition they locate here. Robertson was able to break the news to him that the category had opened, with a cap of 200 visas, while admitting there was much work to do to remodel the visa and tax system to ensure NZ can draw talent but also the proper financial contribution from them.

Dury also mentioned the proposed Queenstown virtual production facility, revealing it would cost between $10-12m. The Government had named the facility as a potential recipient of some of its $20m of diversification loans in Queenstown Lakes, announced as part of the $200m Tourism Communities Plan. Details are scarce, but it would surely find a home in Remarkables Park near to the Research & Innovation Centre (QRIC), which is being funded separately, through the Shovel Ready Fund. Robertson also hinted at the planned convention centre at Remarkables Park. It would complement the QRIC but has also been chasing some funding love from Government. Alastair Porter confirms to Lakes Weekly Bulletin there will be land set aside to expand the hub. He is running Research & Innovation Queenstown Ltd, the Remarkables Park subsidiary set up to establish the centre, along with executive director Johnathan Chen. “We’re hoping that this building will fill up and we’ll need more buildings to not only attract more businesses in NZ and Australia but hopefully some from overseas as well,” Porter says.
“We’re interested in research and innovation but also ultimately spinoffs. So, this will not only attract those research and innovation people, but also people like patent attorneys, and we’d quite like to have VC funds here as well, so there’s the opportunity to take the really good ideas that can be commercialised out into the public sector.” He doesn’t expect to have any issues filling the first building, especially as New Zealand’s standing in the world is so high, due to profile of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the way the country has managed the Covid pandemic so far. And a balance of international talent and NZ talent will inspire each other, he says.

So, what is a tech company, why would they want to come to Queenstown and what can they bring here?

Muller is chief executive of Auckland-based not-for-profit NZTech, which won the best contribution to the NZ tech sector award at the NZ Hi-Tech awards. It is not directly involved in the QRIC but works to promote tech and help the government develop the critical foundations for a successful digital nation, such as tech in education, access, connectivity, cyber-security, digital trade and exports. He says there’d be nothing to stop companies and talent moving to Queenstown if it can create an ecosystem and momentum, which produces a flow of talent from the education system in NZ, complemented by the best from overseas. “If you look at Denver, Colorado, it is one of the most vibrant, start-up, scale-up tech places in the world outside of Silicon Valley because they decided to invest in hubs and ecosystems, accelerators, hackathons and things like that.

What is your Exit Plan? by Robin Martin
Want to sell your Business? You have spent lots of time, effort, and equity into developing your business brand and now its time to divest it and sell. To get the best price, and maximum its value you will need to plan the exit carefully and get prepared well ahead of when you want to exit the business. Exit planning takes time, money, and expertise. Suddenly deciding to sell and taking any old offer – will not result in a good return on you time, expertise, and experience. Reasons for selling. 50% of Business owners exit through the 5D’s – Death, Disability, Divorce, Distress and Disagreement. If one of these reasons strike and you need to exit the business as a result, then expect the value of the business to collapse by up to 80%. Some statistics behind the sale of businesses – or, more to the reasons to consider not selling the business. • Only 1 in 5 businesses sell. • 75% of business owners who do exit, regret the decision within 12 months. • Only 30% of family businesses successfully transition from first to the second generation. • 94% of business owners who plan to sell in the next 10 years, will not be able to do so. • Of those that do sell – over half will have to sell with concessions. • All these figures will get worse as business owners get older and want/need to sell. Based on empirical evidence accumulated the chances are the business does not find a suitable buyer, you will regret selling it and the business will not survive into the second generation.
There is a better way – plan to step away from the business and develop an exit plan. An exit plan will need some time to create and develop as well as requiring time to let the exit plan add value to the selling price. What should be in the Exit Plan: • Determine what your business is currently worth. This can be complicated and subjective, In the end however your business is worth what the market will pay. • Having determined what the business is worth, spend, time, money and employ some experience to increase the value by focusing on the changes required to increase its value. It may be 12 months before the changes you make now affects the value of the business. • Prepare your financials with your accountant. The need to be accurate, include an adjusted P & L to present to buyers, also include explanations for the more important numbers. • Prepare a Memorandum of Understanding about the business. Always present it in plain English, that the buyer will understand, and make sure that it is presented with the buyer in mind - be honest and transparent. • In the MOU include an Executive Summary which summarises the key points – Mission, Goals, Strategies, Unique Selling Proposition, Target markets, Operations etc. Once all this has been completed, engage an expert to help you through the details, and bring a strategic perspective to the process including who to attract to buy the business and how to reach them. It takes time – the average business takes 7 months to sell – may be more if you need to take action to increase the value of what you are selling. For more thoughts and support contact me

This is our shop, and I LOVE it! That’s Jase John, one of the owners of NZSHRED. He’s also passionate about one of this towns fastest growing art shows, the annual Recycled Snowboard Exhibition, which he organizes and founded. Jase & Jon Wilson purchased Shotover Street’s NZSHRED, one of Queenstown’s iconic outdoor sports & clothing retailers, during the GFC back in 2008/09. The boys have weathered COVID19 like that last economic calamity, with a perennial “we’ll push through this” attitude and a cheeky chalkboard sign out the front of the shop, to keep themselves and the town positive and on their toes. Neither of the boys planned to come to the town for the long haul, and certainly not with a plan to go into business. However, like many of us who just came to “check it out”, the town works its way into your daily life and before you know it, you’ve been here 25 years. In fact, Jase arrived from island life on the Great Barrier Reef, with just $400 and a backpack of summer clothes – perhaps that’s why he’s keen to see others make the most of their talents and get ahead in what can, and has more recently been, a rough & tumble time for many. Business pressure has amped up over the last year, as it has for everyone in all facets of life NZSHRED is particularly and deliberately stockheavy in a market predominantly (however, not solely) made up of visitor dollars. “Ultimately, it’s the house on the line”, so they plan carefully, take things cautiously and keep growing and developing… never biting off more than they can chew. NZSHRED is a survivor, by definition, drawing its marketplace status from the earliest years of snowboarding in the Southern
Hemisphere. Never changing their name, culture or sport focus, the boys have nurtured that pedigree, adding new and developing board sports over recent years. When it came to the first Recycled Snowboard Exhibition ‘Off Piste’ about 4 years ago, there was no particular plan.
“My sister gave me the inspiration – she’s an art curator in Canberra, where she brought together pro-skateboarders, artists and kids ‘on detention’, to create a unique skate exhibition”. Jase loved the idea - a concept that could definitely work with Our people, in Our town. “And, to be doing something meaningful with old snowboards was such an easy next step”, says Jase. Now with exhibition titles, such as ‘OnBoard, ‘AboveBoard’ and for 2021, ‘BeyondBOARD, the Recycled Snowboard Exhibition combines Jase’s passion for snowboarding with the idea of giving old snowboards new life, through budding artists or locals who just want to release their inner creativity. It also links hardworking local charities, Queenstown Arts Centre, regional businesses and a bunch of local characters together for some creative fun and the opportunity to help some great causes. Jase says, “It’s incredible what the Exhibition brings out in people. Some folks have no idea where to start, and some progress year after year - we are seeing more diverse materials being used to create multi-dimensional artworks. There’s some stupidly talented people who grab a board and get involved. People spend a lot of time and creative energy, getting right into it. And, the great thing, it doesn’t cost them anything. Just inspiration, time and some effort. I love just
watching people - seeing both artists and those that come along to view - looking at all the pieces, each one has a story”.
With last year being a difficult time for many, local businesses included, the exhibition is a chance for businesses to support their artistic team members who are getting involved, by checking out the exhibition and buying an artwork for their office, lunchroom or the like. “All the money raised goes to charities - we’ve always had this directive, as a way of giving back to the local community. Over the years, we’ve done things like helping out para-lympic athlete Carl Murphy, as well as building a relationship with hardworking local charity ‘Happiness House’. This year we are also helping the national charity ‘I AM HOPE’, with the outstanding work they do, particularly in the area of young people’s Mental Health. This is such an issue in our society at present and a part of living life that deserves our undivided attention”. For the ‘BeyondBOARD’ exhibition in 2021, they are again expecting 40+ artworks, with artist beavering away in this last few weeks before the exhibitions 1st - 4th July showing at Queenstown Arts Centre. “We never really know how many we’ll actually have until we get to the 11th hour … maybe that’s artists … or perhaps just the relaxed nature of Queenstowners”. From an Aussie who came over to ‘check the place out’, to a 25 year history as a local and business owner, Jase John is making an impact, artistically and with the social welfare of town - doing it the same way he runs his business, slowly growing and in a measured and understated way.

If you were looking to start a business that would struggle to survive a pandemic, a hot yoga studio would be a leading contender. So it was for Fierce Grace Queenstown, which opened in premises in Queenstown Central in early December 2019, a few weeks before the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission, China, reported a cluster of cases of pneumonia, later identified as a novel coronavirus. The rest is history, and so was the local franchise until earlier this month, when it reopened in Remarkables Park. Popular longstanding Queenstowner Sally Whitewoods, who ran the resort’s Gay Ski Week QT for six years, and her partner Rhianna Farrington are behind the business. Whitewoods says it’s been a hugely difficult 15 months. The fledgling business was up on its feet after some initial delays, with plenty of people sweating through classes of the modern yoga system, based on classical Hatha, Bikram and Ashtanga yoga styles. “Then Covid appeared, and it just affected everybody,” she says. “Nobody knew if they were going to have a job in the town, nobody had any guarantees, and no one knew how long it was going to last. “We asked our members if they would continue and over half came back saying they’d have to cancel.” They tried Zoom classes for a while but, unable
to work out a budget going forward with so little certainty about the future and with many instructors having to repatriate to their home countries, they took the decision to close. “It’s been horrible for everyone. “I’ve never lost so much money in such a short space of time, and we had a few negative comments in the beginning, but obviously we couldn’t help it. We didn’t know this was coming and I don’t think many people put pandemic into their business plan.” Fierce Grace itself has struggled too, with major studios in the worst possible places - London, New York and Rome.
But Whitewoods says the founders have always been happy to get on the phone and with their support, and the financial and emotional support of family and friends, the couple decided to try again. “It was such an emotional rollercoaster, but we started prodding a few people and calling a few places, including Remarks Park. “They had nothing at the time but came back to us a week later with an option, and things just fitted into place. It’s been amazing.” The franchise had all the necessary equipment, branding and clothing, although Whitewood says there are still some things to pay for from before. “Without getting back into this, it would be really difficult to pay everyone back, so we knew we had
to take a step forward and show people that we didn’t just walk away, it was a Covid situation that took it away. It wasn’t a failing business.” The new studio is a smaller 55sqm and can take 20 people. It’s in the former Health 2000 premises, next to CityCave and Unichem pharmacy, with the Skin Institute and doctors above, in what is quickly becoming a health and wellness hotspot. “It’s very cosy. We love it. We’re in love with it. The studio and Remarks Park have such a nice feel.” The studio opened for its first classes on June 1 and will run a limited schedule of 22 classes a week at first, to allow for cleaning and while it waits for some more instructors. Interest has been strong, and classes are already booking out. “It’s gone berserk, which is great,” Whitewoods says. “And it will be great to see everyone again - there are names coming up that were members before, we’re getting lovely emails from people saying their so glad we’re back. “It’s just going to be really nice to get going again. I’m grateful to get back to teaching again, getting in front of people, helping them reach their goals. The Job Based at Queenstown Airport, we are looking for a physically fit people that also works well in a team environment, the role also has a small level of solitude also. It is a very responsible position, which apart from the crucial delivery of aviation fuels, working to strict company and legislative regulations, also includes operational functions associated with vehicles and depot maintenance, work preparation and documentation. The position requires a sound knowledge of safe work practices, quality control and a high level of professionalism. It is important that this position adhere to all required standards of legislation and health & safety guidelines, it also requires a minimum of 200 hours of training before you can commence working and delivering the fuel. It is a very responsible position, which works on a shift basis over 7 days / 365 days a year. To put it clearly, the new shift pattern may be split between Early Shift - 0600- 1600, Day shift - 0800 – 1800 and a Late Shift - 1200 – 2200. There will be requirements on occasion to cover holiday and sickness as required of fellow team members, when this occurs the roster may change format to cover any staff being away. This is communicated to all staff. The People You will hold a current New Zealand Heavy Truck and Motorcar Licence Class 4. A Dangerous Goods endorsement would be desirable but not essential as training can be provided. You will be used to driving heavy vehicles and have several years’ experience in doing so. You will be fit and healthy and happy to undertake a full medical examination including a hearing test. A police check and aviation security services check will not phase you in the slightest and you will have a strong appreciation of health, safety and environmental standards with a commitment to ‘no accidents, no harm to people, and no damage to the environment’ attitude.
