How bright is our future Queens Birthday Weekend rolls around once again after a year of staggering upheaval and change. We’ve seen the best and worst of what happens to communities when times get tough. It’s been challenging for us all and the creative community has been hit just as hard as any. Yet it’s amazing to see how resilient and brave our people can be. As we prepare to welcome thousands of locals and visitors to the Queenstown lakes this year it’s humbling to see the creative community bounce back so strongly. Every day in my job I see mind-boggling examples of how we embrace a changing future. The ways we work together and welcome uncertainty. Where we don’t fear failure because we know we’re already winning just by being here. A place in time where we’re not afraid of the outlook because we’ve learned how to think differently and explore opportunities beyond the tourism golden egg. The one thing that remains true is the power of creativity and the power of sharing a vision built on trust, collaboration, family and community. This weekend LUMA returns to the Queenstown Gardens to showcase what happens when we all pull in the same direction and we do it without really knowing what’s around the corner. That’s where the joy is. The Queenstown Lakes District has always been somewhere you can carve out your own place and much of the support infrastructure for a healthy, creative community is alive and kicking. You only need to look at the partners page on the LUMA website to see a diverse and thriving business community ready to embrace the future. Working with the LUMA crew pretty much every Thursday evening for the last seven years has been a profound lesson in creative trust and the value of culture. Surround yourself with people who want to share their ideas and are willing to look out for each other and you get a sense of what community really means. This year we continue to embrace change, watching the Fluid team get behind LUMA, working with Council, RTOs, funders and the business community has truly been inspiring. There exists a huge opportunity to celebrate and export our capabilities. 25 years in town has put me in the company of some amazing thinkers; designers, writers, videographers, artists, musicians… they’re all here and if they’re not, they want to be. Our place is a magnet for talent and we need to ﬂing open the doors before all the seats are taken by the suits. Whether it’s Fluid. LUMA or Queenstown, the future looks bright. Downstream pipes will be upgraded through an easement down Douglas Street and turning into Robertson Street. Stormwater upgrades work will also take place on Kawarau Place, the lower end of Riverside Road, and Magnolia Place. The upgrade complements earlier work on the Frankton stormwater network in 2019, near the BP roundabout down to the lake edge. New pipes from this project will connect to previous upgrades. It will also result in better treatment of stormwater before it enters the lake. As part of the project, a full road rehabilitation will be undertaken on Lucas Place. “Lucas Place pavement requires regular maintenance so we will be upgrading it, and approximately 250m of Hawthorne Drive intersected by the roundabout with Lucas Place and the entrance to the Remarkables Park shopping complex.” Council has appointed HEB Construction to undertake this work following a competitive tender process conducted from January to March 2021. There will be some disruption while this work is underway, including lane closures, road closures, and detours in place. “Access will be maintained for residents and businesses. It is likely there will be some noise, but we will work with contractors to minimise this as much as possible,” said Mr Hansby. Stormwater upgrades will take place from early June through to September, and road rehabilitation will take place from September to early November.

Arts+Culture Behind the scenes of Legally Blonde

“Oh my god, Ohmygod you guys” This infectious tune has stayed with the audience days after experiencing the Showbiz Queenstown production of Legally Blonde- The Musical, but for the cast, this tune has consumed their entire being. It’s been two years in the making to put on this sell-out theatre show. “Legally Blonde 2020 was covidly canceled” reminds Amber McGrath, who plays Vivienne, the posh, snobby nemesis of the lead character, Elle Woods. 2021, Covid restrictions had subsided and the show was back on. The cast was reshuffled and come February, the rehearsal schedule began. “I’ve never had such a demanding role before.” says Pearly McGrath, who landed the Legally Blonde lead. “As you saw, I was in every scene... this has been go-go-go”. The ensemble rehearsed Monday to Thursday in the evenings, with an extended practice on Sunday. “5 days a week and it stayed like that until opening night” adds Pearly. For theatre couple Andy Bell and Pol Nicholson, weekly takeout dinners were a necessity as they both landed leading male roles. ‘’At first, there was a lot of duck fried rice from Tham Nak Thai but now it’s bargain box easy cook meals at 5 pm for us stars” says Pol. The cast of 28 and the majority of the backstage crew are all unpaid volunteers. Juggling family, jobs, and sometimes accounts to accommodate this nighttime acting commitment. Showbiz Queenstown, being a non-profit organisation, used sponsorships to finance professional fees (i.e- choregrapher, director, sound, and lighting expertise) plus the license to the script. “The cast with all their busy lives signed up for the love of it” says

Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar author and illustrator, dies at 91 The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle works gave millions of children some of their earliest literary memories and its famous author and illustrator, died on Sunday 23rd May at age 91. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, published in 1969, was welcomed by parents and children with its story of the metamorphosis of a green and red caterpillar with a touch of blue and brown to a proudly multi-coloured butterfly. Originally conceived as a book about a bookworm – called A Week with Willi the Worm – the hero, who eats through 26 different foods, was changed to a caterpillar on the advice of his editor. It has sold 40m copies and been translated into 60 languages, spawned stuffed animal caterpillars and has been turned into a stage play.

Amber, who has rekindled her passion for theatre after a 23-year hiatus. No one was more dedicated to this show than Pearly McGrath, who was holding the biggest OHMYGOD secret of them all. “Yes, it’s true. I am pregnant! 21 weeks now and this baby bump is getting more obvious by the day” “It wasn’t until dress rehearsals that everyone in the cast found out she was pregnant!” says Amber, who undoubtedly found out earlier being the sister of the leading lady. “I wanted this role since last year (thanks to covid) and then I found out I was pregnant!! I put it on the director to decide if I could stay, as I was adamant I would still do it. Thank goodness she kept me.” says Pearly. She describes her exhaustion, especially when performing the bend and snap. Smart costume design came to the rescue, with Pearly singing her praise to Alisa woods. “I owe her big time for helping me parade in front of Queenstown in a playboy bunny suit pregnant”. “How is she doing all this?” Amber says exactly what everyone is thinking “We are all in awe and supporting our leading lady as much as we can”. The show went on, even against all the odds and it was a massive success. But, some may not realise the time, energy, and sacrifice that goes into putting on this production of this caliber for Queenstown community. So please join me in another round of applause for the unfathomable efforts from the cast and crew of Legally Blonde. Bravo! It was fabulous.

I have a strong temptation to merely quote Emma Espiner’s insightful and entirely perfect review of this book, as it captures so much the rawness, the humanity, the honesty and relevance of this book. He is currently the Vice Chair of the European Innovation Council’s $10 billion euro deep tech fund. “New Zealand has a track record in developing diverse technologies and innovation,” Hauser says. “Critical thinking, collaboration, research are all facilitated by enabling supporting infrastructure, even better when it is located in an inspirational environment to live and work like Queenstown. “The government strategy and financial support for the first stage of the Research and Innovation campus is timely, especially given technology sovereignty becoming a dominant issue for this decade and beyond. “I am pleased to be working with the Remarkables Park team to build an ecostystem that enables ongoing research and innovation for Queenstown, and ultimately New Zealand.” The hub is expected to attract world-class tech talent to the town. Chen adds: “Hermann’s knowledge and experience provides invaluable contribution to this project, which helps bridge a critical gap in the sector in order to increase overall productivity of New Zealand firms.”

A $45 million tech hub is being built in Remarkables Park, Queenstown, backed by Government loans. Earthworks have already started on the building, which will provide 6000sqm of offices and facilities for research and innovation enterprises. It is close to Wakatipu High School and will also house a cinema in its basement.

The buildings have been designed by award-winning Otago architects Mason & Wales. Earthworks have begun and the building will be constructed by Cook Brothers Construction. That Government loan will contribute towards the cost of architects, planners, civil, structural, fire and mechanical engineers, followed by 100-plus people who will be involved in construction of stage one.

The Government will lend up to $22.5m to Research & Innovation Queenstown Ltd (RIQL), a subsidiary of developer Remarkables Park Limited, which is in turn owned by Porter Group.

RIQL will match the Government funding towards the development costs, plus fund adjacent roading and services costs.

One of the goals is to help diversify Queenstown’s economy away from tourism. Remarkables Park Ltd executive director Johnathan Chen says: “Ultimately, the establishment of the research and innovation hub will provide a platform to attract new, high-value workforce and visitors, as well as retaining and upskilling Queenstown residents.” As part of the project, a high-powered Research & Innovation Advisory Board will be formed, chaired by Dr (Sir) Hermann Hauser.

Remarkables Park Limited Executive Chair Alastair Porter welcomes the Government’s willingness to work with the private sector to support Research & Innovation to assist Queenstown develop a more resilient economy. “Our vision has always been focused on enabling projects that include creating employment opportunities for local people to ultimately build a prosperous and resilient region,” Porter says. “We are committed to sustainable innovation for the wellbeing of future generations,” Porter says.

I really was going to stop, but there’s just so much we all need to think about and the lovely emails and suggestions from you after my poor editor said I’d quit made me decide to do one more. And maybe another…. I never want to knock anyone who stands for council or government or any other community body - it’s a thankless task, and with my husband and father and many, many friends who have taken their turn at it, I know what a huge commitment is required. What I do resent is the large number of highly paid council staff who keep fobbing off all responsibility onto consultants who get insanely large fees for …. mmm, what is it they actually do? I have had emails and been stopped in the street, and had furious locals pointing out examples like Beach St in Queenstown and Buckingham St in Arrowtown which are littered with orange cones and barely anyone working at anything. Occasionally, a couple of guys in high viz vests on their phones or drinking coffee who may be associated with this “work” are seen. Why isn’t someone from QLDC checking on this? Businesses in those streets are suffering hugely and such a pain if you’re only trying to race in to clear the postbox or use an ATM.

In other parts of the world, such works happen at night or round the clock with big crews, to minimise disruption. The ridiculous shovel ready projects are only going to exacerbate the situation. I went to listen to the very impressive Esther Whitehead this week - she does a LOT more listening and asking questions than just talking. A very novel concept in local politics here! No bad thing having an intelligent young woman with a degree in freshwater ecology, is a teacher and who’s successfully lobbied government to acknowledge dyslexia in schools helping sort out local problems. I’m not a pensioner yet but those who are, are kicking up their elderly heels with delight at the new riches being showered on them by the govt. I know that a lot of our local pensioners’ lives won’t change a scrap with the increase, so do feel free to share the extra $$$$ around as there are plenty of oldies and others in our community who really do need help. I was commissioned to do a Queenstown story for SCOUT mag which comes out soon, and I have reminded readers that despite our reputation for being a very expensive destination, the vast majority of locals live on the minimum wage. With wealthy people snapping up everything for second homes here, it’s tough for young people to rent or buy, so if you’re one of those rich ones, think about how lucky you are, and share the love. The Wakatipu Community Foundation is always delighted to help you steer your excess loot into useful initiatives. Giving to the community helps makes a great community for us all.

I loved seeing our own Fleur Caulton on Seven Sharp this week. This brilliant hospo queen of Rata, Madam Woo and Hawker and Roll was talking about the 15% discount diners can have if they put their mobiles in a box for the duration of their meal. Mobiles are fine if you’re dining solo, but so insulting if someone at the table is more interested in their emails or playing games. And congrats to LOKAL in Fernhill - they have done a great job of refurbishing the old V-Know restaurant and had a fun launch on Friday night. All the locals were there and very happy to have their community meeting place back in action again. Very relieved to see the delicious and wrongly named “yukkies” still on the menu!!

Harbourmaster loses out on new contract by Paul Taylor

Queenstown’s harbourmaster Marty Black is being replaced by Cougar Security. Black has been patrolling the town’s lakes and rivers for more than 25 years. But the company he works for, Southern Monitoring Services, lost out on the new Queenstown Lakes District Council contract to Cougar following a tender process. Cougar Security Group will take over from July 1.

Page 13 Hall says: “The community will continue to receive a high level of service from the new provider. “QLDC and Cougar will be working closely with the local Coastguard team to ensure collectively they can respond to emergencies on the water, complementing Council’s core role of ensuring the current bylaws and rules are adhered to.” Black, who spent five years as a commercial jetboat operator before becoming harbourmaster is a founding member of the New Zealand Rafting Association and the NZ Commercial Jetboat Association. He’s also on the Maritime NZ Small Boat Advisory Forum, Queenstown Emergency Services Group, and was previously chairman of Wakatipu Area St John Ambulance.

QLDC regulatory manager Anthony Hall acknowledged that the change in contract delivery will mean fare welling some well-known individuals from our waterways. “For 19 years QLDC waterways regulatory services have been provided by Southern Monitoring Services,” Hall says. “Many in our community will be familiar with the Harbourmasters Marty Black and Dave Black in Queenstown-Wakatipu and Craig Blake in Wanaka. “The Council would like to acknowledge the great work they have done in providing this service and for frequently going over and above what has been expected.” QLDC conducted a procurement process over the last few months for its ‘waterways regulatory services’ and evaluated tenders from a number of potential suppliers. The key aim is the safe use of waterways in the district for all recreational and commercial users by undertaking education, monitoring, issuing infringement notices where needed and responding to complaints received. That includes enforcement of the Navigation Safety Bylaw and the Maritime Transport Act (1994) Hall says Cougar offers “extensive regulatory response expertise and capability”. It has been operating in the Queenstown Lakes community for 20 years with a “proven track record in the skills and experience sought through the procurement process”. Cougar will also work closely with Maritime NZ, who is the national safety regulator for recreational and commercial activity on New Zealand’s waterways. This will include working alongside QLDC on education and enforcement. Maritime NZ also has a role in investigating serious incidents and accidents, and in supporting and coordinating search and rescue operations in collaboration with other agencies, such as New Zealand Police and Coastguard.

COMMUNITY NOTES The Lost Forests of Central Otago

Sir Edmund Hillary’s Antarctic Hut Virtual Reality Experience Antarctic Heritage Trust is a world leader in cold-climate heritage conservation and recently completed the conservation of the first 1957 building erected at New Zealand’s Scott Base in Antarctica. You can now do a tour to explore Sir Edmund Hillary’s Antarctic hut through a new, ground-breaking virtual reality experience. In partnership with Auckland University of Technology (AUT) the Trust has developed a virtual reality experience to celebrate New Zealand’s first presence in Antarctica. Once the scan data was collected in Antarctica it took more than 4000 hours of development to create this unique VR experience. This large scale project brings Antarctica to people in a way never seen before. Hillary’s Hut was initially used as a base for the party of 23 men engaged in exploration and important scientific research as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (TAE) and the New Zealand party of the International Geophysical Year (IGY).

Central Otago-Lakes branch of Forest & Bird (COLB) is using new ecological mapping to inform its tree planting project to soak up carbon emitted by its activities and to re-introduce indigenous forest biodiversity. It is hard to visualise it today but the neat farmland lapping the lower range slopes between John Creek and Hawea Flat were once the home of mighty native podocarps such as kahikatea and matai. The familiar beech forest of the wetter alpine ranges used to extend further east, merging into totara forest in drier Central Otago. These are the ‘invisible’ or lost forests of the Upper Clutha. A lone totara or isolated beech patch are rare portals to this ecological realm of past and future. Recent mapping of the potential natural ecosystems of Otago by Wildlands Consultants is a new reference for planning new native plantings to restore the indigenous biodiversity and local landscape character, maintain our high water quality and sequester carbon. COLB is using this information to plan its new native tree planting in Grandview Creek. Kelvin Lloyd, principal ecologist of Wildlands Consultants, is the main guest speaker at the upcoming Forest &Bird AGM being held in Wanaka on Thursday. He will introduce the natural ecosystems mapping for Otago, with support guest speakers giving examples of application to real projects in the Upper Clutha area.

Find out what was in the hut and what it was like living in the world’s most extreme environment as these men furthered science and exploration.

If you are interested in what grew here in times past or you are wanting to know what to plant in your project, the mapping will be an invaluable source of information.

The VR tour takes 15 minutes and is in Frankton and Queenstown this week at the local library.

Winter – Time to ponder and to plan Winter really is around the corner. There were days in the last few weeks that really sent me into hibernation mode, except I have to remind myself that this is some of the most productive time in the garden. It’s so easy to hide in the cave and declare ‘I’m done now’ as you wrap yourself up in your bear blankets. That was me midsummer this year with my fence fiasco and subsequent rabbit plague. Autumn and those warmer winter days is a time for laying the preparation for next year. It’s a time for new infrastructure and tidying up the old. It’s also time for the ‘Dream Projects’ to be actioned. Come on, we’ve all got them, a glass house, a 3-bay compost bin system, or adding a few beds to the vege garden are often key ones along with a wee garden shed with a potting table and some berries the list goes on....

I just put in a garden sitting bench, all this work and gardening and nowhere to sit back and soak it up. The garden bench I should have done years ago. It’s been on my dream list forever! Well, it’s finally in place and it’s become a feature of the garden and possibly, just maybe I might be a little less productive as I wear down the timbers looking over my vege garden pondering on what to do next. Better still just breathe it all in and enjoy the hard work that’s been done over the years. Gardens aren’t built in a summer unless you have very deep pockets. As you use the space you find what works and what doesn’t. My garden has been a 20-year project. When people visit, they like what they see, but I try to get across this all started with two 20cm high raised beds that were 2metres wide and 4 metres long built with the thinnest macrocarpa. It didn’t take long for me to realize my bold ‘big gonna be great’ plan was all wrong. You can’t get into the middle of a 2m bed without trampling all over everything. Those beds lasted 15 years!!! It took 15 years for my ’dream project’ of converting them into 5 raised beds 90cm wide to happen. The vege garden actually expanded in other directions. Actually, it expanded as I thought bigger was better then it started to contract. I realized I needed to grow food well on fewer beds than grow food badly on too many beds.

This year I was lucky enough to be a judge for the A and P shows ‘produce a patch’ competition. It was amazing to see all these different veggie gardens in the flesh. One of the biggest takeaways from it was how productive you can be in a small number of veggie beds. I’m definitely 1 bed for the broccoli, 1 bed for the carrots and so on. I plant companion flowers and herbs everywhere and the odd nitrogen fixer too. But most of these competition gardens were along the Mel Bartholemews ‘Square foot/metre gardener’ style. Many of these beds would have 10 different veggies growing in the same bed. Have I become a monoculture gardener? Sure, I have beneficial flowers and herbs randomly everywhere and I sneak bush beans in between my brassica’s…… I’ve become a gardener of big crops. I want 100+ onions, I want leeks all winter and I want a bed of sprouting broccoli to keep me going for months, these competition veggie beds we’re so inspiring and are making me rethink my approach.

I think my composting has been going big or going home for many years with my nine bays of wooden pallets (I’m lucky enough to have the space) I just do batch piles of hot compost. That is, I gather all the ingredients and fill a bay with my collected nitrogen rich ingredients and carbon rich ingredients and make a compost pile in one go at least 1m high, wide and deep. I’ve been bokashing and suddenly I have 4 bins going. Next up I have 2 hungry bins on the go and I’m about to trial an in-ground worm farm called the sub pod, then there’s the chickens. Mmmmmm not simple but lots of fertility being created at my place and all from materials some people think of as waste and we should all see as future gold. So, as well as lots to do in the next few months it’s a great time to just sit on your bench, observe, ponder and wonder what you’re going to do next, or which dream project is being green lighted or how you could do things differently next spring. Government increases tourism businesses staff training support through QRC by Paul Taylor

Queenstown tourism businesses will be given Government money to pay new staff, when they allow existing staff to study part-time. A pilot programme aimed at upskilling tourism workers in Queenstown, Te Anau and the Mackenzie District was launched by Queenstown Resort College (QRC), the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and Queenstown Chamber of Commerce.

Despite a dip towards the end of 2020, QRC is doing well he says. “We’re 90% domestic students and only 10% international, and we’ve managed to hold on to our domestic students and still attract them. “We’re back to full intake in April and the quality of the students we’re attracting is outstanding.”

It has now been revamped in response to Queenstown’s staff crisis. The original pilot scheme was for MSD to support around 125 workers on the 26-week course.

Now MSD will continue to pay the $250 per week, and pay companies $225 per week to cover new staff filling any gaps in the roster, created by the studying. QRC boss Charlie Phillips says: “In concept, people think the course is fantastic, but there are some real problems with releasing staff to go on it, given the shortage of workers around the place. “So to help off-set that, MSD has agreed to subsidise new hires as well - the new person plus the person going on the course. “It’s pretty attractive.” Phillips admits finding new staff to fill the gaps will be a challenge itself, but those businesses that manage to will get the double hit of improving the quality and size of their workforce. “It’s about retention, training and attraction of new staff. Given the settings on immigration there has to new creative ways of building your staff base. “It’s not the solution, but it’s part of a solution to actually help companies staff up. The first intake of 20 students is on Tuesday 1st June, followed by another later in the month. The course runs over 26 weeks but not in peak periods such as the school holidays. It will teach leadership and performance, with papers including communication, motivational leadership, wellbeing and diversity, performance under pressure and operational management. “All those soft skills of the 21st century that people need to be proficient in,” Phillips says, “which funnily enough tourism offers in abundance. “It’s improving the capability of staff. “The reality is productivity is going to be critical to the future of the sectors. You’ve got to do more with less, so you need a more productive and capable workforce and that’s what this course enables.” Students must be on at least a 30-hour a week contract with their
