I want Queenstown to be a place where people want to raise children; a great place for us to work and play. I wish to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by John MacDonald over the past 4.5 years. I look forward to continuing the good work John has done, especially in the important areas of housing and health, and to making my own positive contribution to the governance of our district. In my forty years in Queenstown I have taken leadership roles in education, sport, community service groups, church, commerce, tourism and council entities. Many will know me through my involvement in local rugby, the fire brigade, St Josephs School, Lions or my time practicing law. I’ve been a small business owner and have held board roles on the Queenstown Airport Corporation, at Destination Queenstown and with our local Chamber of Commerce. All have equipped me not only with good governance experience but also with first hand knowledge of the needs of our families, businesses and our communities generally. Our district boasts an outstanding number of incredibly smart, innovative and socially conscious individuals. I am well connected across diverse networks of Queenstowners who want to see our small city thrive. Bringing people together, working collaboratively with change-makers and being open minded to ideas are qualities I can bring to our Council table for effective leadership.

So many facets of our lives have been affected by the pandemic but now we have the rare opportunity to reset our economic and social policies to promote the well being of our communities. High on priority list of items we must attend to are such issues as: • Managing growth • Investing in infrastructure • Health services • Economic diversification • Transport and parking In order to tackle these issues we require a council that is strong in governance, consultative with the community, sustainability driven, and forward thinking. Queenstown offers so much but our challenges are complex. I will bring broad knowledge and experience and am invested in a sustainable future for my kids and grandkids who live here. It’s common knowledge that in the past year the New Zealand tourism industry has taken a huge hit due to the COVID pandemic; what is less well known - due to the recent travel bubble opening with Australia and domestic tourism doing better than ever - the Tourism and Hospitality industry needs new talent now, to fill hundreds of available roles.
SIT graduate and tourism student Danielle Huntington decided to continue studying at SIT after gaining a Beauty Therapy qualification, because she enjoys learning, developing skills, meeting new people on campus, and having the opportunity to expand her career options.
The time to train for the re-emergence of tourism is right now, say tourism employers and sector stakeholders, who see the current market providing the perfect window of time to train in preparation for international borders reopening. Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham says she brings “vast experience, knowledge and a passion for the area to this role”. “Her outstanding leadership qualities have been on display in our district for a number of years now, and she has built strong, positive relationships since arriving in Queenstown in 2015.” The former New Zealand representative in hockey, playing for the Black Sticks at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, earned a BCom in Management from Auckland University.

She joined Police in 2001, working in Wellington before a move to Waitemata District, where she progressed through workgroups including Public Safety Teams, Road Policing, Burglary Targeting Team, Investigations and also as Iwi Liaison Officer. During this time, Enoka also spent 12 months in Timor Leste as a Detention Centre Commander, from October 2006 to October 2007. Her arrival was in the wake of significant conflict between the Timor Leste Police and the military, and the killing of eight police officers. She credits this deployment as a formative experience in her career. Enoka subsequently featured in the 2008 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her work in Timor Leste, receiving the Queen’s Service Medal. Her performance in assuming a high level of responsibility in an area of policing that was critically important to establishing and maintaining stability in the region was noted as being a credit to New Zealand. When asked how she feels about being the first ever female area commander in Southern District, she says: “I’m certainly proud and honoured to be in this position. “Most of all though, I’m just really looking forward to continuing being part of the amazing team in Otago Lakes Central that aspire to bring their best to the area every day. “I’m going to keep building the trust and support that they offer, because that’s so important to how we can collectively get the best results for our communities here.”

Arts+Culture For Julian Knights ‘First Thursdays’ has been an idea ever since he attended his first art evening in Chelsea, New York. Every first Thursday of the month in West Chelsea’s hip gallery district, art galleries open for free to the public, often giving them the first look at new exhibitions. The idea of the community coming out to wander from gallery to gallery, meet up with friends or bump into acquaintances they hadn’t seen in ages, really appealed to Julian. He noticed the vibe was also different to a regular trading day and an invitation event held in a gallery. It was more inviting and open, relaxed and more joyous even. Since then, he has been keen to see something similar start in Queenstown. First Thursdays is now a strong tradition in the Arts and Culture world around the globe and can play a key role in both connecting community and diversifying economy, two key elements for regenerating Queenstown currently. In many cities, the community knows First Thursdays is on each month and make plans around it. It’s a way for family and friends to come together for a fun and free evening interspersed with a wine or a bite. While First Thursdays is new to Queenstown, First Thursdays are held in communities as diverse as Laguna Beach near LA, Whitechapel in the UK and Portland Oregon, where the galleries are an integral part of the neighbourhood scene. Aspen in the US and Banff in Canada are recognised as more than the outdoor adventure market. We certainly have a similar credentials as these two communities, where a focus on Arts and Culture has been strong for many years, along with all the other necessary ingredients to make it a success. •

First Thursdays is not just for the collectors but an environment for novices, and a new reason for people to come into town for a get together. It will take time, but Julian says he’ll know First Thursdays is becoming something special when the hotels can recommend it to their guests. Julian is on the Queenstown Recovery and Regeneration Taskforce and with his arts hat on can see that successful ski towns like Banff and Aspen have extremely vibrant arts scenes. They realise they must have a broader offering than just adventure tourism. Kelly Carmichael, who is directing Starkwhite’s new Queenstown gallery in Beach Street and is one of the event curators, is hopeful First Thursdays will celebrate the diversity of art practice here. “With all the galleries open until 7pm on the night, groups of friends or families with kids can make an occasion of it, mixing in a bar and restaurant hop with their art walk. Each gallery is offering something different which makes it exciting for the visitor and allows the event to unfold organically, but already galleries are thinking about how to make First Thursdays Queenstown a regular diary event.” Kelly and Julian already have their mind on the future creativity that First Thursdays offers. They will look to make it less passive, to engage the viewer, involve the incredible number of talented sculptors in the area, and host one-night festivals. The inaugural First Thursdays Queenstown is on June 3rd, beginning a long weekend of culture and creativity that also includes Wakatipu Music Festival and LUMA. Distribution Centre caters for Kiwi Harvest expansion. Kiwi Harvest’s Queenstown operation is now “official”. The local food rescue intermediary has been in operation since 2018, but the emotive gathering at 156 Glenda Drive recently was to mark the launch of their new distribution centre which offers an exciting network expansion for the region. “Previously, any food we rescued on that day had to go out on that day, which really limited how many people we could support.” Says Queenstown Kiwi Harvest operations manager, Kayleigh Simons – Smith. “So, having this storage facility means we can get food from, not just from the supermarket, but from the New Zealand food network, who deliver pallet loads of food to us.” Neil Ballantyne, from the Ministry of Social Development, emphasised the need for this service in these times as food insecurities once again becomes a grim reality for kiwis. The government invested 32 million to support kai rescue nationally, bringing on board the surplus pallets from the NZ Food Network to assist with propping up local food rescue operations, like Kiwi Harvest. “Between us and the Dunedin branch, we are going to try and cover all of Central Otago.” states Kayleigh. Reflecting on the “humble beginnings’’. Esther Whitehead, running councillor and instigator of the local initiative, can remember those early days all too well. “When I started, I used my own van. I got the funding to support the petrol… I had this vision to try and co-ordinate all the social agencies who were already doing amazing work, but none of it was co-ordinated. Seeing it now, it’s massive!” Kiwi Harvest founder, Deborah Manning, started in Dunedin and like Esther, also used her own car to rescue food. In her speech at the Queenstown Distribution Centre opening, she spoke of its inception, how the idea stemmed from the disparity of two articles she was reading. One, was about kids going to school hungry, the other, on dumpster diving. She saw a ‘joint solution’ of using food waste to combat food poverty. “Deborah Manning started Kiwi Harvest in Dunedin, and I approached them to send it up here” explains Whitehead, forming a partnership between Sustainable Queenstown and Kiwi Harvest. “They’ve got the systems, they’ve proven it elsewhere, and also, they were willing to try it.” Those early days were ‘logistical nightmare’ for Esther but this day, the hopeful council elect feels a sense of pride seeing her initial efforts transform to a fully-fledged operation. “There were lots of times where I thought ‘Oh my gosh, is this worth it?’ and now I’m like, ‘Yip’.”
Dirty Hands My Tree planting excursion began in the aftermath of the devastating Australian Bushfires. It was reading an article by Givealittle founder, Nathalie Whitaker, which spurred me into action. “No-one should be able to buy peace of mind with a charitable gift… “ This line gets me every time, a decerning looking into online donations. I decided to act on her words and join the movement to double down on efforts to regenerate our land... Plant more trees, that was her answer. I soon became ever present at Jean Malpas Nursery. For 2021, I took my efforts even further and joined one of the largest beech reforestation projects in New Zealand. The Treespace / Mount Dewar project is an exciting and progressive development for our time. 400 ha of the mountain is to be restored to its natural beech forest habitat. 85 modest log cabins will dot along the landscape, taking up only 1% of the land. You don’t hear of many commercial developments that place such a high emphasis on its surroundings. The sections seem to come as secondary. Mana Tahuna Trust won the contract to employ the tree planting force. They also have a wholesome outlook. In a response to Covid, they sought to create job opportunities in the nature sector and to improve the wellbeing of the Tahuna community. Treespace had the idea, Mana Tahuna provided the muscle. Last season, 11 workers made a start getting 7,000 beech trees in ground. This year, the trust doubled down on numbers to achieve the lofty goal of 16,000 beech in the ground. It was an eclectic tree planting crew, biologist, landscapers, hiking guide, night-time bouncer. This wasn’t hired labour, it was more than that, it was a labour force of love. We were there because we cared, and we wanted to see our hard work forest. The term ‘mahi’ got thrown around a lot, this translates to ‘hard work’. We had 6 weeks to get these beech tree babies in the ground. Trays were meticulously tallied daily. Our goal was to achieve 1000 trees a day. Our best day saw 1300 plants in the ground. We got fit and our systems clicked. Auger Jack could drill 70 holes and fertilise them by smoko. A pedometer tracked that we were covering 10km a day, trudging up and down hills. Each day brought its challenges and numbers did vary in the different terrain. Long tussock first had to be scratched out, then drilled. Loose dirt would trickle through the long grass making it difficult to fill the hole. Some sites were at vertical limits and booby-trapped with wasp nests. Other sites were tough as schist. I had a saying on repeat “I’m gonna be battered but beautiful by the end of this”. My feet swollen and energy spent by the end of each day, but my soul cleansed. This year the Mana Tahuna Trust can boast formidable number. 18,000 beech trees have been planted up at Mount Dewar. The upcoming season, they are set to scale up and extend employment opportunities to more locals. This is a legacy project. It will take many hands to assist with its transformation. Bike and hike tracks will be etched into the topography. There will be planting for years to come. Will you get your hands dirty?

Another beautiful young man takes his life in our town. One is too many. And it is getting to be the norm. I had a member of our community reach out to me on social media last week, she asked for help as she was getting concerned about the amount of young men taking their lives and she feared it would only get worse. We have approached various medical doctors, we have approached agencies, to let them know we can help. We know the waiting list is a minimum of 6 weeks for counselling. This is too long when someone needs help now. The system is broken and lives are being taken. I knew this young man, he was 29. I knew his plans to become a Coach and help others, I knew his dreams and his fears, I knew he had a good heart, I knew he had lost his way and he was given it all he had to reclaim his life. Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Sorry everyone - I’m still here. So far, nobody has put their hand up to take over writing this column. It’s very good fun and people send you all sorts of fascinating titbits (many of which are never able to be put in print!!) and you get to know everything that’s happening in the district. I also get quite a lot of criticism - like “why didn’t you say Ben Elton was performing here?” To be honest, I thought everyone would already have known, and also because it was in the Events Centre which is always a terrible venue. Apart from lacking comfort and good acoustics (fairly crucial for most events), Mr Elton himself pointed out that there isn’t even a bar. I still had terrible FOMO about not seeing his show, and have only heard rave reviews. I’d had such a huge culture fix with two days at the Writers Festival in Auckland. The sound and light spectacle BLINDNESS (about a virus that makes everyone instantly blind) is still in my mind - we were sat in odd groups in the town hall, wearing headphones and with some coloured fluorescent tubes hanging from the ceiling. There was only ever one voice speaking and it was one of the most chilling, unsettling shows ever. When the lights were on, I’d stare at my friends and see their faces were all rigid with tension as well. Utterly brilliant. And Alan Duff gave a fascinating talk - many of his same themes about why Maori shouldn’t get handouts etc, and at question time, a very elegant young Maori woman stood up and said we all knew what he thought were the problems, but what was his solution? He simply said “You - you wahine are hardworking, intelligent - you are already doing the right things. Take over from all those men who are serving the Maori population poorly. They are all on fat salaries, talking, talking and doing nothing. They need to be replaced with smart, responsible women.” The huge applause said it all. All the writers I heard were so eloquent and funny. Kazuo Ishiguro said readers are always astonished to learn that he never has any idea how to write his next novel, and it’s only as he starts writing that it becomes a story. He said if he’d been making bicycles for forty years he’d know exactly what the end product would be, but writing is a totally different sort of process. It was fun being in a big city again after so long, and as we walked up Queen Street, I told my friend how happy I was to be there. Within a minute, an angry old man started shouting at a woman who’d nearly bumped into him as she had been too busy looking at her mobile. Then a scary, spitting man screamed abuse at everyone walking past and pushed his face really close to them - I suddenly remembered how much I like living in the Wakatipu. It was bliss getting home…. Everyone’s so nice here - I had to fill one of my tyres up early on Tuesday morning, and discovered I have no idea how to do it. The lovely young man at the Caltex station saw this dim old bat struggling, and raced over (he only had a Tshirt on despite it being -2 degrees and snowy). He wouldn’t let me give him any money for helping me. My friend Sally got a strange 40th present - her husband took her into the garage and showed her how to change a tyre. Apparently, men don’t help women once they reach 40, and you have to wait till you’re 60 for them to start helping again. Seems he’s right! Then my husband (who has the incredible power of being able to make things fall apart without even touching them) was driving my car and the rear vision mirror fell off. Just fell off. Mmmm ok…. So I went to the Toyota shop, and they sent me to Johnny at Novus Glass in Glenda Drive who fixed it in two minutes and also said there was no charge. Thanks, guys - Wakatipu men are fabulous!!

Two down, one to go for Queenstown swimmer Liana Smith. by Paul Taylor
Liana Smith, 24, swam home to the South Island from the North, on Thursday, battling waves and whopping swells to swim the Cook Strait in a quick 6hrs 59mins 24sec. In doing so, she became the second fastest woman ever to complete the swim in that direction, from the North Island to the South, just 10 minutes off the record time. She’s also tied for having the latest swim of the Strait in the season, with her cold water training in Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu paying off. Smith hopes to become only the seventh Kiwi to complete New Zealand’s three big open water swims - Lake Taupo, Cook Strait and the Foveaux Strait (28km). She powered through Lake Taupo three weeks ago, completing the 40km swim in just 12hrs and 26 minutes. But conditions were hard-going in Cook Strait as a weather front moved up from the south about halfway across.. “It was an absolute fight,” she says. “There was a good hour-anda-half in there where I was having to fight for every stroke. “I’d go to pull and my arm would just get completely swept up under me. “It was genuinely just like being in a washing machine. It was wild. And that just completely came out of nowhere, it wasn’t on the forecast or anything. “The swells were so unexpected and there was a point where I was expecting to be pulled from the swim.” Smith was also pecked on the ankle by an albatross about 15km into her 27.4km swim. “It was terrifying. I was expecting to be seeing things coming from beneath me, not really getting attacked from above. “Even the guys from the support crew were completely taken aback by it.
Two of the major challenges of the Cook Strait are the cold and the tides, but Smith says she went well on both fronts. “I was pleasantly surprised. It was always a thing that I was pretty likely to get hypothermia, it was just going to be what degree I suffered, because it was so late in the season. “But it actually wasn’t too bad. It was sort of high 14 to low 15 degrees the whole way. It was only when I got right close to South Island and in the shadow of the hills that it really dropped quite low and got pretty cold, but at that stage I was running on pure adrenalin to get finished.” The Strait has two opposing tides, which mean swimmers can swim for hours without making any real distance. “But I got lucky, I was able to stay on top of it. “I didn’t really have a patch where I felt I wasn’t getting anywhere, which was quite nice because that’s usually what people feel, they have to fight their way through the tide.” Smith maintained an incredible open water pace of 1min 30sec per 100m and coach Philip Rush, the NZ marathon swimming legend, told her near the end that she was in with a real chance of joining the exclusive 6 hour club. “I had about 45 minutes to get through 1.5km and I’d be under 7 hours, so I just absolutely turned the tap on, got the arms spinning. “I didn’t really think I had more to give, but apparently I did. I heard him screaming out ‘go, go, you’ve got a minute to get there’ and I snuck in at 6hrs 59min, which is awesome.” It’s been a long road back for Smith, who had to put her swimming career on hold when she needed spinal surgery as a teenager. But now she’s one swim away from joining NZ marathon swimming’s Triple Crown club, after completing the Cook Strait. “It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet that I’ve just swam to the South Island. It might take a wee while again. “It’s pretty momentous for me.”
“He got his whole bloody beak around my Achilles tendon, so it was a very weird feeling, but fortunately it didn’t cause an injury.”
She plans to take on the Foveaux Strait, between the South Island and Stewart Island, in the spring, after training through winter.
Other than the odd seal, she didn’t have any other encounters with wildlife.
“I’m going to rest up first though. The salt water in the mouth is going to take few days to recover from, nevermind the body, which is pretty battered.”
She says the swells, wildlife and exposure made the swim “much scarier” than Lake Taupo, with the possibility of drowning in her thoughts. “Especially in those swells.”
Smith is fundraising for Kiwi youth mental health charity I Am Hope and hopes her swim will inspire others to take on adventurous challenges. She’s raised $6,249. Donations can be made through on her Givealittle page.

COMMUNITY NOTES NZSHRED BeyondBOARD Recycled Snowboard Exhibition 2021 Premiere Queenstown winter sports store, NZSHRED is once again hosting a wicked exhibition of snowboards, which have been recycled into unique artworks by various art and snow sport enthusiasts from around the region. The 4th edition of this now infamous expression of local talent, the exhibition is growing and expanding every year. NZSHRED sources old or broken snowboards, which are then transformed into some amazing artworks. Artists can again, enter the exhibition free of charge. If you are a budding artist and keen to be part of this Not-For-Profit project, you can get more information and register on the BeyondBOARD facebook page. And, if you need a board to use for your artwork, you can collect one from NZSHRED any time. Last year the exhibition was a month later due to Covid changing the way we delivered events, however still managed to raise over $1600 for local charity Happiness House, through both the donated sale of artworks, as well as the Gold Coin donations by visitors at the door. However, it’s not just about the money raised … it’s also the smiles on the faces of local people exhibiting their artworks or looking over what friends or fellow community members might have produced.
This year the BeyondBOARD exhibition will again support Happiness House, as well as the topical charity I AM HOPE - a youth and community focused support group run by The Key to Life Charitable Trust, and started in 2012 by well-known New Zealander Mike King. For the last three years I AM HOPE have been promoting positive attitudinal societal change in schools and communities up and down the country, and funding private care and counselling for young people, with a specific skew towards Mental Health. The Exhibition will be open to the public from 10am Thursday 1st July, with an Open Night gathering (all welcome) happening from 6pm on Friday 2nd July. We encourage all artists and supporters to come along and socialise amongst the great local talent on display. There are Three Awards up for grabs at this years’ Exhibition: • People’s Choice Award: which can be voted as part of anyone’s Gold Coin donation at entry. • Art Centre Award: which will be judged by Queenstown Art Centre Manager, Andie King. • Sponsors Award: as voted by the various contributing Local businesses. In an effort to further draw on the community side of our town, Local businesses are being encouraged to support BeyondBOARD by encouraging their staff to enter a snowboard or perhaps buying an artwork for their workplace. At the artists discretion, snowboards will be available for sale during the exhibition, as well as there being a number for silent auction. The event is supported by various Local businesses and organisations, particularly the Queenstown Arts Centre, the Lakes Weekly Bulletin and NZSHRED, with 100% of funds raised going straight to this years’ two charities, Happiness House and I AM HOPE. Laryn Allied Health Community Day Laryn Allied Health is opening it’s doors to Queenstown for a free community day. They know this past year has been tough for many people and the financial impact for some has meant not having access to healthcare they need. They look forward to giving back to the community which has trusted them with their health over the years. World Smokefree Day Public Health South and The Cancer Society are hosting a free community event at the lakefront on World Smokefree Day, celebrating our smokefree people, whanau, places and environments. They want to raise awareness for the need for smokefree beaches, following the success of QLDC’s smokefree beaches trial, and have goodies to give away and heaps of information about creating a smokefree New Zealand, including cessation help. They will be showcasing artwork from local primary schools which support the environmental benefits of smokefree beaches. According to the results of the 2019 National Litter Audit done by Keep NZ Beautiful there are an estimated 10,269,090,000 littered cigarette butts polluting New Zealand ecosystems. “It turns out that’s enough cigarettes for 2,142 per person and they’re all littering our environment. By educating the public about the environmental impact of cigarette butt litter we hope more people will make a commitment to stopping smoking” says Annie Airey, Health Promotion Advisor, PHS. Galápagos rock formation Darwin’s Arch collapses Darwin’s Arch, a famous rock formation south-east of Darwin Island in the Galápagos archipelago, has collapsed due to natural erosion, according to Ecuador’s environment ministry. The arch is renowned as a diving spot for underwater encounters with sea turtles, whale sharks, manta rays and dolphins. The rock was named after the British scientist Charles Darwin, who visited the islands in 1835 on HMS Beagle and developed his theory of evolution by examining Galápagos finches.

Legendary song writer Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman; turns 80 on Monday 24th May. Dylan is regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and has been a major figure in popular culture during a career spanning nearly 60 years. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” (1963) and “The Times They Are a-Changin’” (1964) became anthems for the civil rights and antiwar movements. In 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

US Attorneys General urge FACEBOOK to abandon plans for kids Instagram. More than 40 US states Attorneys General ‘s have called on Mark Zuckerberg to reverse plans for a version of Instagram aimed at children. In March, Buzzfeed published an internal company post stating that the company was looking to build a version of Instagram for children under 13 – the current age minimum of the app. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, reportedly said an increasing number of children were using social media apps, and that it was difficult to verify their ages. He said, “part of the solution is to create a version of Instagram for young people or kids where parents have transparency or control. The Executive Housekeeper in responsible for maintaining a consistent standard of cleanliness across all guest accommodation, public areas and other resort facilities in line with guest expectations and Delaware North policies and procedures. The Executive Housekeeper leads the day to day operations of the housekeeping department to ensure the consistency, quality and integrity of the housekeeping service meets and exceeds guest expectations.
Skill / Abilities / Knowledge: • Resort and hospitality industry knowledge. • Effective verbal and written communication. • Effective decision making and communication. • Effective coaching, mentoring and training skills. • Ability to effectively delegate work and manage quality outcomes.
HOUSEKEEPING ATTENDANT We are looking for an enthusiastic Housekeeping Attendant with a keen eye for detail to join our Housekeeping team.
• Clean bedrooms, communal living areas on a daily basis, working both alone and with a small team of housekeepers.
The right candidate will need to be a team player and has experience in a Housekeeping or customer service role. A flexible schedule with the willingness to work over time is preferred.
• Ensure all daily routines are followed.
Demonstrated success in: • Relevant resort / hotel / executive housekeeping experience.
Responsibilities:
Full Drivers Licence is essential. Accommodation available onsite.
• Using initiative and forward thinking to complete the tasks in an efficient manner.
• Be aware of the guest environment and show due consideration when carrying out duties in guest areas.
• Leading a diverse team to achieve high guest satisfaction and meet business objectives. • Financial analysis, planning and control. • Inventory management. • Knowledge of Property Management System (CMS).
