The By-Election Bake Off! QLDC’s by-election is June 11th, meaning, NOW IT’S UP TO YOU TO VOTE. Your voting papers arrive by snail mail on May 20th, if you have a mailbox or PO Box, and if you’re registered to vote. The By-Election Bake Off is on and I am looking for your vote. Leadership, to me, is about enabling the mana of others, or ‘success for succession’, it’s about building relationships and trust within our community. I have demonstrated leadership in Business, Education, Sustainability/Climate Action and Community Partnerships. A vote for Esther is a vote for a more equitable future… because governing bodies should fight to be representative of those they govern. Years of ‘traditional ways of being’ can deter desirable candidates and different thinkers from coming forth but we need diverse thinkers now more than ever. I predict that next year’s full local body election will see several councillors and our Mayor stand down. This by-election bake off is just one transaction, but it’s really important leading into who’s around the table next year. I want to prepare for that now and support good leaders coming forward in the year to come. We’re in a period of transformational change, as society moves from a prescriptive, authoritarian approach to a more participatory approach. Our local consultation processes have previously served us baked cakes, only asking if we’d like more or less sugar! It’s governance by 20th century thinking, offering ill-fitting solutions to 21st century issues. All this sheds light on why few young adults vote. We know that young adults are not apathetic or disengaged, we know they care deeply and are engaging in politics outside of the traditional realms, expressing themselves through activism, online petitions and entrepreneurship. We have opportunities in our district to nurture this and to engage with our future leaders better. To put your name forward as a candidate, is to be privileged enough to be financially stable, and to have housing security. I recognise this privilege and acknowledge that you have to be able to ‘afford’ to put your name forward for this role. This is a barrier to entry and one reason I am driven to advocate for greater equity in; building livelihoods (not just jobs), housing affordability, and how people access local decision-making. Am I enjoying the journey of campaigning? Yes, I’m listening to you and hearing how you wish to engage. It stands to reason that a vote for Esther is a vote to build trust, and a shift from baked cakes to baking the cake together. Let the By-Election Bake Off begin. Queenstown houses hit $1.2m record median price in April by Paul Taylor

Queenstown Lakes recorded another new record median house price in April, hitting $1.2 million. Last month, 105 residential properties changed hands in the district, down from 125 in March when the median price was $1.19m, according to stats from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). REINZ regional director Gail Hudson says: “The lack of stock is continuing to put pressure on house prices. “Listings for the Otago region were down in April, with buyer enquiry also down, following the government announcements and partially as a result of very restrictive lending plus the regular seasonal slow-down that comes with winter. “Buyer enquiries from Australia have increased slightly since the opening of the Trans-Tasman bubble has made the option of a move or holiday house in Queenstown more viable.” Across the Otago region, the median house price hit $710,000, up from $675k in March and $447k in April 2020. Dunedin also posted a record median price, $621k, up from $620k in March and $495k last April. Other stand out regions included the West Coast with 46 properties sold – the strongest April sales volumes in 15 years, Canterbury with 1,076 properties sold - and Waikato with 700 properties sold. Excluding April 2020, Otago had the lowest April sales volumes since April 2008. Acting REINZ CEO Wendy Alexander says: “While the national picture represents the busiest April in 5 years, the reality is that we’ve seen the number of sales decrease when compared to March. While in part this is what we expect to happen when moving from March to April, there is definitely a wait and see approach from a number of investors and also some first time buyers.” Median prices for residential property across New Zealand increased by 19.1% from $680,000 in April 2020 to $810,000 in April 2021, albeit down from last month’s record. Auckland recorded a new record median house price of $1,125,000 in April, as did Dunedin City ($621,120) and Queenstown-Lakes District ($1,200,000). Additionally, 9 out of 16 regions reached record median prices and so did 21 districts – well down on 32 districts last month. Alexander says: “As we head further into the cooler months of the year and the second tranche of LVRs comes into effect, we would expect to see further stabilisation of the market in the coming months – as long as we see a solid level of new listings come to the market.”

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I’m such a busybody and love knowing what is going on in the community. The best thing about writing this column is getting all the info about everything, and Sunday night’s Drag Jingo was a perfect example. My friend and I were very much the old ladies in the room, but instead of numbers being called out, 80s music (MY ERA!!!) was played and while we didn’t win anything, we had a terrific and terrifically funny night. Thanks so much to the Jingo Queens Phoebe Moore and Indica Wolf, and to the Beach Tree for providing the venue. I must have missed being told to wear something slinky and shiny to Jingo Bingo - won’t make that mistake next time. And because I get told so much, I also get asked about what’s happening in the Wakatipu. My friend Skipp Williamson, who’s very busy (must be something to do with her being one of Australia’s most influential business women) asked what this community most needs. Where to start? As I was rattling off the list, I mentioned the Wakatipu Pottery Club which can’t take any more members for lack of kiln space and Skipp stopped me in my tracks - would the club like an almost new kiln sitting unused and unloved in a stable? There are going to be a lot of VERY happy potty people now. Thanks so much, Skipp and family, and if anyone else has unused stuff taking up space, please don’t hang on to it. Give it to any of the community groups who may well be able to use it. Needless to say, that goes for money that’s sitting around unused as well - if you’ve got oodles of it just gathering dust in some low interest bank account, there are dozens of places that would leap at the chance to spend it in ways that make life better for everyone in the Wakatipu. If you don’t know where you want it going to, do contact the Wakatipu Community Foundation who can give you all the info you need. The only thing lovelier than getting a nice lump of money is being able to give money away. On the subject of giving money away, please can we all keep telling QLDC to do what WE want, and not what their consultants want. Honestly…. those consultants say they’re consulting the community, but actually they are insulting us instead - how many times do we have to tell them what we want, and then find it reappearing in a report in total contradiction of our wishes? Like that Ladies Mile “CONSULTATION” document that asked us which of the three options we preferred. It seems almost everyone preferred none, but you couldn’t fill in the rest of the questionnaire without choosing the least appalling one. And I shudder every time I drive past those enormous green 40km/h motorway signs outside Arrowtown apparently that exercise by an expert TRAFFIC CONSULTANT (please may that never appear on any business card I see) cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hands up anyone who would have asked for that... My bookclub has been going for well over twenty years and we are a very highbrow, serious group of women. Oops - that must have been some other bookclub that I’m not a part of. Ours is a sisterhood of nonsense lovers - we headed to Auckland for the Writers Festival to listen to some of the world’s great thinkers and see if we can’t get some exciting new thoughts bashed into our old heads. In the two days before the festival, we planned some deep book chat at beautiful Muriwai Beach where one of our members lives, and to our horror, discovered we had only forgotten to bring ANY books at all. Luckily, there was not a single second of uncomfortable silence….

Among them were hoteliers, who without further action, will have to leave dozens of their rooms empty because they do not have the staff they need. Lobbying the Government to address Queenstown’s labour situation will continue to be a pressing priority for me and I questioned Stuart Nash about this in parliament. I have also written to the Minister for Covid-19 Response Chris Hipkins and Minister of Immigration Kris Faafoi requesting space in quarantine for skilled workers, as well as more flexibility with visa settings for the many valued members of our community who do not have permanent residency to ensure they can continue to work and contribute to our community, It was pleasing to see the opening of the Whanau Room at the Lakes District Hospital recently. The Whanau Room is a tremendous community achievement and a credit to those involved with the Lakes District Hospital Foundation. But it is also just a small step in the right direction in providing the Queenstown region with the health services and facilities it needs. I recently attended a meeting of the Queenstown Interagency Group. It was a pleasure to be able to acknowledge the organisations that make up this group on the incredible support they have provided our community over a trying past 18 months. I also enjoyed the opportunity to be able to address Wakatipu High School students involved with the Generation Give young philanthropy initiative. Generation Give not only provides young people with governance experience, it also results in fundraising for good causes in our community. Our region is certainly developing an impressive group of future leaders. Before my next column, the Highlanders will have run out onto the field at the Queenstown Events Centre to play the Melbourne Rebels. I am looking forward to the match, which brings added benefit to the region and will be enjoyed by many. It will be even better if we can see a hometown win, go the Highlanders.

Local MP demands action over cancer treatment. by Paul Taylor

Queenstown MP Joseph Mooney has written to the Minister of Health asking him to intervene in wait times for oncology radiation in the region. Last week the Southern District Health Board’s (SDHB) had 157 people on the waiting list for oncology radiation, more than double its ideal waiting list of 70. That’s is the largest number of people the waitlist has ever seen. The service provides scanning and also radiation treatment. On Wednesday, the SDHB moved to outsource, asking other health providers to bid to provide assessment, planning and the subsequent radiation oncology treatment. It means up to 200 breast and prostate cancer patients will need to travel to get their urgently needed treatment. According to the Ministry of Health, patients referred urgently with a high suspicion of cancer should receive their first treatment within 62 days, but this has only happened for 48% of patients in the past quarter. Mooney, National MP for the Southland electorate, says: “The situation has got to a point where one radiation oncologist recently described it as being ‘shameful and criminal. “Some Southlanders are waiting months just to see a specialist, and others have reported having to wait six to eight weeks for a CT scan in Dunedin. “Early diagnosis and early treatment are critical to any patient’s chance of beating cancer…. these delays are hurting them and causing undue distress to their families.

Mooney has written to Minister of Health Andrew Little asking him to examine the “extraordinarily long waiting times” and make sure cancer sufferers “receive the care they deserve much faster than they’re currently getting it”. “The Minister must urgently look into this matter and provide the necessary resourcing to reduce the SDHB’s waiting times.” Southern DHB CEO Chris Fleming, on Wednesday, explained the decision to outsource some scanning and treatment. “In recent years we have faced challenges maintaining and growing our service to meet the demand, and existing challenges recruiting locums and senior medical staff have been made even harder due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. “By seeking arrangements with other providers, we want to build a service that is less susceptible to burgeoning wait-lists when we see spikes in demand or need to manage staff absences. “We are very concerned about the current wait times some of our patients are experiencing and need to do everything we can to ensure our patients receive their care in a timely manner.” Fleming says the DHB would not place a limit on the number of patients, or the duration for which it would be utilising services provided by external organisations. “Our concern is to reduce the waiting lists, so we’ll be seeking additional support for as long as is required to achieve this.” It has also recruited additional nursing and junior medical staff as part of building the capacity of the internal team. However, Fleming acknowledges the DHB is limited in how much it can increase local capacity until an additional senior doctor can be recruited to the team, either as a locum or on a permanent basis.

LUMA needs you!! Sometimes the perfect opportunity drops right into your hands, and deciding to grasp it is easy as. That’s what happened for Ben Deegan with the amazing LUMA festival, which will be held over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Born and bred in the Midlands in the UK, Ben came to New Zealand on a working holiday visa, met his partner here. The family recently moved from Cromwell to Queenstown where the six and ten year-old kids are settling in just fine.

This thought encompasses one of Ben’s favorite aspects of contributing to a cause. “When you are involved in a volunteer project, everyone wants to be there and that lends to a very nice environment. It becomes an egalitarian affair without a hierarchy where everyone is welcome to offer what they can, both in time and in skills.”

Ben is self-employed in Informational Technology but has a diverse background with a degree in Sonic Arts and experience working in the building industry. His active passion for music includes playing guitar, actively teaching both adults and kids and recently starting a band.

“LUMA is unique in that it transforms town for a weekend. It is completely ephemeral – there for that period and then gone, yet it leaves a lasting impact on the people who attend.” Participating as a volunteer, “you have the chance to meet new people each year and to build familiarity with the regular volunteers” who, like Ben, find it so rewarding that they participate year after year.

When his partner showed him the advert for volunteers for Southern Light Project of LUMA, in 2018, he saw it as “something that uniquely fitted his skillset and interests.” LUMA is a sensory experience bringing together illuminated art, light sculpture, performance and community on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

And beyond LUMA? “If there’s something that speaks to you, go and do it. Everybody’s got their skillset in terms of what they are good at which they can lend to something that needs volunteers. And don’t worry about not giving enough time – whatever you can give in terms of time and skill is well received.”

And his instincts were right. Ben enjoys a great many aspects of devoting a week each year to assist with the setup and pack down efforts. Creative people have designed the environment that attendees see and hear as they walk through the festival, but “behind it all is the technology that brings it to life.” In addition to using his practical skills, LUMA gives Ben the opportunity to both “talk with and learn from the people who have made the technical decisions on how to make it happen” and to “be an active problem solver in the equation.”

His proudest moments with LUMA have been “at 5:30 on Friday when the lights are suddenly turned on and people start coming through for an extremely memorable event.” It’s exhilarating to “go from the gardens being empty on Tuesday to the immersive encounter of LUMA, with just four-five days to get everything up and running.” Working outdoors in early June has its challenges. Ben admits to questioning his decision a few times when he found himself “wading around in a partially frozen duck pond trying to get an installation set up in it.” But ultimately, the camaraderie of the group overcomes the weather. “Everyone who is there wants to be there. It’s a great chance to think on your feet, while following direction and doing what needs to be done to achieve the end result.” he says.

Luxury cinema to open next year by Paul Taylor

Luxury cinema brand Silky Otter Cinemas has confirmed plans to open in Queenstown next year. The Kiwi company will open in Remarkables Park, in the basement of a new Remarkables Park Limited (RPL) building off Market Street and Golden Elm Lane. RPL announced back in December that the new building will feature an eight-screen cinema, along with 27 cafes, bars, shops, other activities and offices above ground. But it did not reveal the cinema operator. Silky Otter Cinemas is a new brand to the industry. It has a cinema at Orakei Bay Village in Auckland and will open two more this year, in Christchurch and Nelson. There are two cinemas in Queenstown, Reading Cinemas in The Mall downtown, and Dorothy Brown’s in Arrowtown. Silky Otter’s offering intends to combine the best of both, offering everything from blockbusters to arthouse in modern surroundings. They’re also promising no ads before the movies screen, just trailers. Silky Otter Chief Executive Officer Neil Lambert says they identified Queenstown as somewhere with limited cinema options. “As one of my favourite places in Aotearoa New Zealand that I visit on a regular basis, I saw an amazing opportunity to bring Silky Otter Cinemas to Queenstown and elevate the movie going experience. “We can’t wait to show Queenstown what we believe is the future of movies in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

A small slice of Japan in the Whakatipu By Bethany Rogers

Local woman Keiko Okumura is part of a small group keeping Japanese culture alive in the Whakatipu Basin. Originally from Yamatokoriyama, near Osaka, Keiko’s story is like that of many Queenstowners: “I came to New Zealand to travel. I arrived in Queenstown after being in Auckland and I felt it was a nice place. I was here on a working holiday visa so I worked, and I travelled some more. I went to Fiji and the islands and I came back to Queenstown to work… I’m still here, I’ve been here for eighteen years – I have a family now!” After starting a family, Keiko met other Japanese mums at her Plunket group and it’s through this that she heard about the Japanese Family Society. When she was told the Society needed a new chairperson, she roped in a few friends to take up the role together and keep the group going. “We have a supplementary language school and a kids’ club. We have things for people without kids too: there’s a choir club and ukulele

The Japanese summer festival is often held in February or March each year. There’s karate demonstrations and workshops, Taiko drum performances, Japanese calligraphy lessons, arm wrestling challenges and even an opportunity to throw stars like a ninja! “We’ve been running it for six years. It was originally going to be at the playcentre, but it got too big so the Council said we could use the Memorial Centre. This year, we changed the style of the event due to Covid restrictions, so we had fewer people and ran a series of culture workshops instead of a festival – a karate class, calligraphy workshops – it was a success.” Keiko says “connection is very important” and that the aim of the Japanese Family Society is to bring people together. “We’re trying to connect Japanese people, families, and anyone who is in or around Queenstown. We try to support each other in raising children here and to share the culture with them and also to share the culture with local people – we want to connect people in Queenstown.” Those who want to be involved can find out more via the Facebook page (Japanese Family Society of Queenstown) and website

Art News Inflammatory Banksy art Earlier this year, an aspiring artist who calls himself ‘Burnt Banksy’ walked into an art gallery in Chelsea and bought a Banksy screen print called ‘Morons (White)’ for US$95,000 using funds he’d raised from investors. Then, as 50,000 people watched live on Twitter, he set it on fire. Clearly an amateur at burning down the establishment, he struggled to light the print and it took quarter of an hour to burn while the obligatory Twitter insults rolled in. Burnt Banksy claims he’s “trying to make a message” but critics argue he’s trying to make a quick buck: before torching the artwork, he had a photographer take a picture of it and then minted the image as an NFT (non-fungible token). NFTs are a certificate of authenticity and ownership, and now Burnt Banksy plans to sell the NFT of (real) Banksy’s artwork. The worst part is, it could work. NFTs are the latest digital trend with some fetching millions of dollars. ‘Everydays — The First 5000 Days,’ by the artist known as Beeple, recently set a record for a digital artwork in a sale at Christie’s when its NFT sold for US$69 million.

First Thursdays is a new collaboration between seven local galleries that encourages communities to connect with creativity. First Thursdays takes place in many cities internationally and organisers hope to get Queenstown locals out to galleries and artists’ studios through these events as a great way to see new art, exhibitions, and artists at work. On Thursday 3 June seven galleries and artist studios in Queenstown town centre will come together to offer exhibitions, talks, and opportunities to meet artists during a special late-night opening until 7pm.

Wine tasting Central Otago has to be, unquestionably the best region for wine tasting in NZ and right up there with the rest of the world. For the day out, head to Bannockburn and Cromwell wineries which have some tremendous options. and you’re usually be able to rock up at a cellar door, try a few wines, then toddle off. The wineries, of course, are working on the business model of you like the wine so much, you will buy a bottle. But for visitors, this try before you buy scheme is tremendous

Our amazing local museum The Lakes District Museum was established 73 years ago and started out in the billiards room of the Ballarat Hotel before moving to its current historical location. With a strong hands on focus the museum is a favorite with locals. If you haven’t been, its totally worth the visit. Currently in the middle of its renovation which will improve and strengthen the buildings and return it to its glory days the museum is a local treasure. There is a small fee of $10 per adult and a whole family gets in for $20 so its not strictly free but it’s as close to free as you’ll see.
