The development of Queenstown’s trails needs your support. Riding a bike has been a big part of my life in the Wakatipu. Early days it was about A – B riding, like getting to Lake Hayes to hang with friends in the sunshine. There was no suggestion that the ‘State Highway’ wasn’t safe or the corrugated gravel down Morven Ferry Road unrideable. 40 something years on I’m less inclined to venture on to the State Highway. And thanks to the Queenstown Trails and the work of the Trust, I really don’t have to. What an amazingly accessible network that now enables us to get out walking or riding all over our district. I’ve made a lot of use of the trails over the years and when I spotted the ad late 2019 calling for Trustees, I jumped at the chance to see if I could contribute further to the awesome work already achieved. Not long after, the dark clouds of Covid blew across our shores. A year on I reflect on how I felt at the time. The uncertainty, the anxiousness, young adult children recalled to the nest in disbelief, my role as a husband, a dad, a business operator and employer. Hectic times yet the silence of lockdown helped give clarity in the fog. The sunny autumn days with a routine of Zoom meetings and allocation of a few hours out on the trails to decipher the happenings of the day, scope a plan for the next day, be distracted by the surroundings and clear the mind. I know the trails inadvertently gave strength to so many of us as residents at the time. Through lockdown the trail network understandably saw a massive increase in usage and the awesome thing now is how many have continued to use them as a core part of our life here.

With the evolution of ebikes we now see a growing demographic of user and range of possibilities, from the passive tourist to the older generation, commuters and just imagine if they were cool enough for High School kids to ride to school! The Trust isn’t just here to imagine though, right now we are forging ahead with plans for new tracks and trails. From grade four backcountry single track to grade two gravel and commuter trails, there is something for every walker, runner or rider in the mix. But we can’t do it without you. The development of more trails relies on community donations. Queenstowner tops RNZAF recruit course by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s Sophie Aitken has been named best all-round recruit from the latest Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) recruit course. She graduated the 14-week recruit training at RNZAF Base Woodbourne and was awarded the Lawson Cup and the Andrea McNabb Perseverance Cup. Aircraftman Sophie Aitken, 21, a Helicopter Load Master under training, said she decided to join the RNZAF as it brought together two interests. “I wanted to work in a challenging environment that brought together the two things I am passionate about: helping people and aviation.” She was looking forward to the next steps of her career, which will include more courses which will qualify her for her new role. “I’m expecting the real hard work and fun to begin now. I am very open-minded about my future. “I am still barely touching the surface of the opportunities the RNZAF has to offer and I am just striving to take all the opportunities I can and see where they lead,” Aircraftman Aitken said. She said she really enjoyed the practical elements of the recruit course, especially the longest day. The longest day is for instructors to see how resilient people are under pressure over a long period of time, both physically and mentally. Longest days typically start before dawn and end at dusk. “These exercises allow you to truly see yourself and make you push through your previously unknown barriers.”
Aitken is presented the Lawson Cup by Chief of Air Force Air Vice-Marshal Andrew Clark.
Aircraftman Aitken said to anyone thinking of enlisting in the New Zealand Defence Force to just go for it. “You won’t know if you don’t try. Do your research, study, train and give yourself the best possible chance to succeed through selection,” she said. The Lawson Cup and Warrant Officer of the Air Force coin is awarded to the best all-round recruit. The Andrea McNabb Perseverance Cup is awarded to the recruit who best demonstrates the ability to overcome challenges and persevere in the face of adversity.

Parking in downtown Queenstown is now free after 6pm. QLDC announced the U-turn on council-controlled parking in the CBD last week. It’s removing both charging for pay-and-display spaces and also any time restrictions. Since June 2018, motorists have had to pay to park before 9pm and could only park in certain spots for a limited amount of time. The move is to encourage more people into the downtown area in the evenings, particular diners, in the aftermath of Covid-19. QLDC General Manager Property and Infrastructure, Pete Hansby said the change was driven largely on the back of requests made by the community, championed by both councillors and staff.

“We’ve heard plenty of people expressing their desire to spend more time in the Queenstown CBD and support local businesses,” Hansby says Hansby did caution potential visitors to the CBD that while restrictions had been changed from 9pm to 6pm for many parking spaces, drivers would need to continue avoiding parking or stopping in bus stops, taxi stands and mobility spaces. “We have 21 loading zones in the Queenstown CBD, all of which can be used by anyone to pick up and drop off passengers briefly. Signage for applicable parking spaces throughout Queenstown’s CBD was changed immediately to reflect the reduced restriction to 6pm.

Mulder was chief executive at City Care Limited for 15 years, the Christchurch council-owned construction and maintenance company, before resigning last year. Mulder has more than 30 years’ general management, executive level and governance experience in the infrastructure and construction sector, along with a master’s degree in Construction Management from the University of Canterbury. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand. But now he’s making the change to a career in education. Maree Howden, who has been acting chief executive for the past 10 months, did not apply for the position. She returns to her permanent role as deputy chief executive and Head of Faculty, Health, Humanities and Computing.

You will all know I’m sure that we welcomed our first flight from Australia, in 387 days, on Monday last. The arrival itself was a very emotional affair with lots of reunions and folk pleased to be on New Zealand soil. Although the number of Australians holidaying on the flight was relatively low, at least it’s a start. I don’t expect we will see hordes of Australian visitors between now and ski season although any will certainly help our position. May is traditionally our quietest month of the year so pretty much any additional business during that month is a bonus. The value for us however, will come during ski season. With only New Zealanders last year, ski season numbers were reasonable indicating that many kiwis that either hadn’t skied before or hadn’t skied for many years decided to hit the slopes. The general view is that Australians will do the same, (given the fact they can’t go anywhere else), so providing the snow gods play ball we might even have a record ski season. Our district needs that badly. A chance to put some money back in the coffers after the dreadful year we’ve experienced. I’m hearing reports of hotels having excellent bookings, especially over the school holidays in the season. The concern for this period is whether we will have enough labour to adequately service the market. It would be a disaster to damage our reputation through bad service. Don’t forget that if you are trying to hire staff, the first step is to register vacancies with MSD (Ministry for Social Development). This gives government accurate data reflecting the employment picture in the Queenstown Lakes, and it can match those looking for work with your positions. If you’re not using their free service already, I highly recommend you do. Sign up at https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/online-services/ vacancy/index.html . The more interesting part for the Australian market will be springtime. I know that DQ have this well in hand but we will need to find some innovative ways of attracting the Australians post ski season. And, let’s not forget about kiwis. They’ve supported us on an enormous scale over the past 12 months and we need to make sure that they still feel very welcome in their own patch.

The Council Word by Miranda Spary
Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Last Anzac Day was so strange - we were standing at the end of our driveway in the dark and drizzly dawn listening to the car radio broadcasting the service. When it finished, a lone bagpiper somewhere in Arrowtown played a mournful, haunting Last Post that echoed around the hills. It was extraordinarily moving. Anzac Day is always moving, but 2021 will be back to normal - I love seeing the old soldiers with all their medals, and and it’s a chance for us to honour the firemen, police and ambulance staff who look after us on the terrible days when we desperately need their help, and the not so terrible ones when they just help us in everyday ways like checking our smoke alarms and making sure mismothered children find their parents at the A and P show. There’s an exciting talk happening at Dorothy Browns next weekend - Rod Hall-Jones is going to talk about his book “You’ll Never Make It” - the title is a comment made by a teacher who implied he wasn’t smart enough to get his pilot’s licence. How wrong that teacher was!! Rod will be joined by Juan Romero, who worked with him and Jacques Cousteau on Calypso - these men have a LOT of great stories to tell and if anyone has a teenager who is being made to doubt their ability, this will be the perfect event to bring them to. And it’s definitely not just for teenagers…. who doesn’t love listening to tales of daring-do by adventurous guys!! Half of the Wakatipu is heading to Dunedin for Iain Gallaway’s funeral - this velvet voiced cricket commentator who has kept fans informed and entertained for over forty years will be hugely missed. And it’s nothing to do with the influx of Australians (we’re so happy to see you all!!), but lots of locals are keen to head to Dunedin to see the albatross chicks learning to fly. If you can’t get there in person, the DOC Royal Cam is a very snoopy live stream of what albatrosses get up to when they think noone is watching. One day, the albatrosses will rebel and insist on their right to privacy. Watch it now, before it’s too late… I’ve had my sister and family home for nearly a month now, and we’ve been racing round like crazy for them to see as much of the South Island as possible before they head back to London. Last week we drove the two hours to Te Anau and Fiordland Jet whizzed us down the Waiau River. We got dropped on an empty beach to walk the last part of the Kepler and ended up spying on the once dangerously endangered takahe at the bird park. It’s so easy from Queenstown to get to so many different worlds - it was only three hours to Wilderness Lodge at Lake Moeraki at the weekend to get up close and personal with dozens of different birds and plants and insects and even eels. When we were kayaking in the morning, a smug little fantail perched on the rope at the front of my kayak, puffing up his chest and posing, knowing full well I hadn’t taken my camera. And it’s the same distance to Mt Cook for a bit of boating round icebergs, or hiking up to the glaciers. In fact, within a 3 hour radius, there are skifields, beaches, cities, oodles of national parks, cycle trails and every entertainment imagineable. We Wakatipu dwellers are the luckiest people in the world - more than enough food and water for us all, beautiful landscapes and most importantly, peace. Lest we forget.

High Court rules Wanaka Airport lease illegal

The High Court has overturned the Wanaka Airport lease and, in a judgement, released last week, the court said Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) granting of Wanaka Airport lease to the Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) was unlawful and it will be set aside. The judicial review was brought to the High Court by lobby group Wanaka Stakeholders Group (WSG), who say they are “delighted” with the findings, in which the court rejected four of the group’s claims but upheld two.

The transfer of control of a strategic asset can only take place under the process prescribed in the Local Government Act 2002, and that process was not followed in the case of the Wanaka Airport, Justice Van Bohemen said. The consultation process carried out by QLDC before granting the lease also did not comply with the consultation requirements of the Act. While Justice Van Bohemen acknowledged there would be disruption to Wanaka Airport tenants by setting the lease aside, by not doing so the public’s ability to have a say in the future uses of the airport over the next 100+ years would be limited. As a result, the lease has been declared to be of no legal effect. The High Court also rejected the Wanaka Stakeholder Group’s argument that QLDC misled the public about its intentions for the airport. “The court considered that the expectation of introducing jet services to Wanaka Airport arose in the course of negotiations over the lease after the consultation process had concluded.” A bid by WSG to create an order restraining QLDC and QAC from taking any steps to develop and operate Wanaka Airport as a dual capable airport with Queenstown Airport was rejected by Justice Van Bohemen. “If there continues to be a case for meeting that demand by the development of Wanaka Airport, it is open to QLDC and QAC to pursue that option, provided they do so in accordance with the requirements of the LGA,” he said. Both QAC and QLDC provided statements following the court’s decision. “We acknowledge that the court has found that the council did not follow the correct statutory processes to lease the airport to Queenstown Airport Corporation, but welcome its rejection of WSG’s position that QLDC had deliberately misled the community in doing so,” QLDC communications representative Jack Barlow said. QAC would work with QLDC on “next steps”, QAC chair Adrienne Young said. Jack Barlow said “In the meantime the Wanaka Airport remains in the ownership of QLDC and we will look to QAC to continue to provide a managed service, and to ensure that there is minimal disruption to operators and tenants.” QLDC councillors approved the 100-year lease of the Wanaka Airport to the QAC in 2017. When it was signed in 2018, QAC paid QLDC $14.5 million for the lease and assets.

Sydney Morning Herald turns 190 The Sydney Morning Herald, the second oldest newspaper in the world held its 190th birthday last week. For perspective, the SMH started operations before Queen Victoria took to the throne. Its older than the NY Times and certainly older than any NZ publication that’s still publishing. Started in April 1831 as The Herald, the newspaper has evolved from solely ink-laden pages to compete in the digital age and boasts a monthly circulation of over 11 million.
Drone Makes First Flight on Mars On April 19th, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter completed a quick test flight on Mars, making it the first powered aircraft to fly on another planet. The small drone overcame several hurdles during its flight, including harsh winds, thin Martian air, and a recently-patched software bug. Ingenuity is a relatively small drone that weighs just four pounds and folds down to the size of a small ironing board. It hitched a ride to Mars on the Perseverance rover to get to the red planet. NASA had to delay Ingenuity’s first flight due to a flaw in its 800,000 lines of code. Ingenuity’s blades spin five times faster than that of a typical helicopter to accommodate Mars’ thin atmosphere, and the drone would tear itself apart if tested at full speed on Earth.
Facebook Ignored a Vulnerability that Leaked Millions of User Email Addresses Millions of Facebook users had their email addresses leaked. Facebook knew about the breach, said it was patched, but didn’t actually patch it. Then, a Facebook representative accidentally sent an email to a journalist that exposed the companies plans to combat this sort of thing: to downplay it. This is a bad look for Facebook. Hackers are using a software called Facebook Email Search v1.0 to uncover millions of Facebook users’ email addresses, even if the addresses are set to private. This user data, paired with the 533 million phone numbers leaked from Facebook just a few weeks ago, may help hackers break into accounts or build a database of Facebook users’ private info
California’s Policies to Reduce Air Pollution Are Working Thanks to progressive policies over the past 24 years, California has clocked up a 78% reduction in diesel particulate pollution, the toxic black stuff from car exhausts. Cleaner air has benefited public health, with 82% fewer deaths from heart and lung disease. Amazing progress, especially considering that California has more cars than any other state as well as the USA’s two largest ports.
Champs-Élysées set for green transformation Paris will spend the next ten years transforming the ChampsÉlysées into a green space for pedestrians after a communitybased proposal was greenlit by the government. Under the new plans, vehicle traffic will be reduced by half, while pedestrians will be able to enjoy wider sidewalks and more greenery in what the architects call “planted ‘living rooms.”

Organised by the Better Building Working the “Tradies Breakfast” was held at the Sudima Hotel construction site in Queenstown with around 75 folks arriving at the crack of dawn to hear about ways to reduce, reuse, take-back and recycle waste materials across the construction sites in Queenstown Lakes. The event was the first to be held in Queenstown on a commercial construction site. The breakfast provided each organisation the opportunity to discuss best practices and highlight the construction waste gaps and opportunities in the district as well as share successes and lessons learnt.

Arts+Culture Pint-Sized Plays are back!
Nine original, pint-sized plays will be performed in Queenstown and at Lake Hawea this weekend. The 10-minute plays will be performed by the Remarkables Theatre crew with minimal props and no more than three actors per performance. At the end of the night, the audience chooses the winning play.
“As a writing competition, it’s good for actors as there’s a lot of different writing styles. We go to different venues and we have to be adaptable to different furniture and settings… there’s often different exits and entrances too. It brings you back to the fundamentals of acting – you have to project, and connect with the audience. Like our annual garden shows, we try to get as many people involved as possible, including newbie actors.” This year’s plays include themes of a mistaken identity, the death of Socrates, a familial relationship and an audition. The plays were shortlisted from the 2020 competition entrants are being performed this year, as last year’s show was cancelled due to lockdown. “We’d only done a couple of rehearsals before lockdown, and we’ve had to re-jiggle some of the actors and directors since last year but it’s all been going really well. I think it’s going to be a lively night out. “It’s a smorgasbord and there’s something for everyone. The audience participation is great because it invites you to talk about what you liked and have a discussion about what you have seen. The winners are often surprising too, there’s often a different winner every night!
“The whole idea is that it is a more relaxed format, performed in a pub with a more intimate environment, and a ten-minute time limit per play,” says Remarkable Theatre’s Melaine Grindell. The unique theatre format started in Tenby, Wales and is designed to encourage new writing and draw new audiences to live theatre. The plays have been written by both local and international writers – but not even the directors of the plays know who has written what until the winner is announced. Melanie is directing one of the nine plays this weekend and says Remarkable Theatre have showcased Pint-Sized Plays in the region since 2013. “I like that they have so many different elements,” she says, “there’s so much variety and there’ll be serious and comedic plays.
“I recommend people get there early with friends, grab a drink and make a night of it.” Where:
