We all await the revised plans for Hotops Rise Hotop’s Rise is named for Ludwig Hotop He was born in Germany. He settled in Queenstown in 1867 and was registered by the Otago Provincial Government as a” vendor of poisons” in 1873. (He worked for Hallenstein & Company and bought its pharmacy on the corner of Rees and Ballarat Streets.) Hotop was mayor of Queenstown three times between 1880 and 1906. He was a passionate tree planter and largely responsible for the plantings around the lake and town. He succesfully moved the introduction of Arbor Day in 1890. In 1873 the Queenstown Gardens were set aside by the first council as a plantations reserve for the community. This was a quite extraordinary act of foresight. Over the 150 years since, generations of locals have battled to ensure that this foresight was honoured. The Guardians of the Gardens, often led by redoubtable women including the tireless Margaret Templeton, (“Mrs T “), literally saved the Gardens from several external development threats.There are plaques recording this on a path to Hotop’s Rise. Locals would also roll up their sleeves to look after the Gardens and Hotops when times were tough and there was no money for maintenance of these reserves. The threats continue today but they are no longer only external. Recently, under a version of the Council’s Gardens Management Plan, the Rose Garden was marked for removal. The Friends of the Gardens (FoG) was established to continue the tradition of conservation of the Guardians and to provide for the community to have a say in the management of our reserves. This is very important for our renewed visitor economy as well as for residents’ wellbeing. QLDC consultation with FoG is much appreciated and very many hours to do so are given up every year by unpaid volunteers. However, regarding Hotops Rise, it must be said that, had FoG not questioned the many “X” marks on the trees, QLDC would not have appreciated how many and how much amenity were to be lost. There had been no opportunity, e.g. via public notices or meetings, for the wider community to consider the merits or design alternatives for the combined cycle/pedestrian path through Hotop’s Rise and a new bridge. We all await the revised plans. The demands on volunteers (and QLDC) become ever greater. We ask all who care about the Gardens and reserves to be vigilant. FoG welcomes any support to help inform QLDC and to get feedback from the wider community. Not everyone has the time to wade through all the Council plans or submit. Green light for downtown roads

Queenstown’s downtown bypass has been given fast track planning approval by the Government - in just 67 days. The first stage of the Queenstown Arterials Project will massively upgrade Melbourne Street, which connects to Frankton Road by the Millennium Hotel. It will punch through to Henry Street and down on to the junction with Gorge Road. That alone will cost $66 million, with $50m funded by central Government. Stages two and three will see the upgrades, replacements and new roads between Queenstown Recreation Ground and Fernhill roundabout.

All three stages were yesterday given fast track approval under The COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act 2020, by an expert consenting panel chaired by barrister Heather Ash. Those approvals would likely have taken years under the Resource Management Act 1991 consenting process - instead they took 67 working days. Environment Minister David Parker welcomed the approval for the project that will construct, operate and maintain a new urban road around Queenstown’s town centre. “Traffic congestion has been a long-standing problem for Queenstown, and needs to be addressed as the city continues to grow and tourism recovers post-Covid-19.
“This project will help future-proof the city and contribute to a much safer, more climate-friendly transport network.”
The project is expected to provide 477 direct full time equivalent job and 702 indirect job opportunities during the construction period.
It will include cycling and walking connections, which will reduce reliance on private vehicles and encourage more low-emissions modes of transport.
“This project meets the requirements under the fast-track consenting process - getting people into jobs, supporting the transition to low emissions and boosting local economies.”
“Through the construction phase this project will create jobs and support the local economy, which has been hard-hit by the impact of the pandemic on international travel,” Parker says. Queenstown Lakes District Council is working on detailed plans for the project, but when construction will actually begin has not yet been confirmed.
The COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act 2020 is one of the Government’s levers to boost jobs, speed up infrastructure development and improve environmental outcomes in response to the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Another house price record for Queenstown by Paul Taylor
Queenstown Lakes has reached another record median house price, hitting $1,185,000 in March. Stats released today by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand show 115 residential properties sold across the district last month. That’s up by 76.9% from last March, when 65 properties sold. Also, the median price rose 9.7% from March 2020, from $1.08m.

Queenstown-Lakes was one of 32 districts that reached record medians, while 12 out of 16 regions did the same. More than a quarter of sales in Otago in March were for more than $1m, although buyer enquiry started easing towards the end of March, after the Government announcement on the Bright Line test and other measures to cool the market. Wendy Alexander, Acting Chief Executive at REINZ, says March was “another incredibly strong month from a price perspective”. “The national median also reached a new record, increasing by $46,300 since last month, showing just how much pressure has been placed on house prices and how we desperately need more supply to come to the market. “Additionally, we’re seeing houses sell at their fastest pace in a March month ever and we’ve seen the highest percentage of auctions the country has ever seen since REINZ began keeping records showing just how quickly the market is moving. “Looking forward over the next couple of months, we would expect house prices to continue rising, but we hope this will be at a slower pace than we’ve seen over the last 6 to 12 months”.
Thousands jabbed with vaccine in Queenstown by Paul Taylor
Almost 2400 people received their first Covid-19 vaccine in Queenstown this week, approximately 1200 of which were frontline health workers. Clinics opened at Wakatipu Medical Centre and Queenstown Medical Centre on Saturday 10 April and the teams have been working throughout the week to vaccinate border workers and frontline health workers. Hamish Brown, Southern DHB Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout Incident Controller, said: “This has been a fantastic collective effort and we are grateful to our partners in Queenstown, including WellSouth and the general practices. “This is a huge step towards protecting our frontline health care and border workforce when the travel bubble opens on Monday.”

If your garden isn’t sparkling this year, your motivation has gone and the tomatoes seem to have caught on to your lacklustre mood as they haven’t been growing clusters of red, yellow and orange goodness. It’s time to get Tony Robbins in. Grab some of the growing season that’s left and get some autumn and winter veggies growing. Get your family involved, even if it means bribery. 20 minutes a day with a few extra hands works wonders and there’s the bonuses of bonding, mentorship and veggies. 2. Swapsies. Talk to a gardening friend or acquaintance and see if they’ll do a half-day garden swap. Have a clear list of what you both want to achieve and smash it out. • Continue sowing winter greens directly and larger winter crops, sprouting broccoli, cabbages etc every 2 weeks. • Don’t let weeds go to seed, pull them out and either make some weed tea in a bucket, compost them if they haven’t gone to seed or put in a dark far far away corner in the garden to rot down. • Keep an eye on moisture levels, traditionally this is a very dry time of year, who knows this year it’s all upside down. • Many crops if they have healthy tops at harvest you can chop at the soil surface and allow the roots to decompose in the soil. Creating pathways, and food a source for microbes. • Over 50% of a rubbish bin can be from food scraps. If you’re not already, check out the Bokashi bucket composting system. 3. Still solo? Don’t get overwhelmed. Write a list and number it in order of importance. Give yourself a daily time slot and ‘start’ the list. Start with something easy (it doesn’t have to be no.1) and revel in the achievement; remember how this feels when you’re attacking the bigger jobs on the list.

4. Join Woof or Help X. 5. Join a local gardening group. Meeting up with fellow gardeners is probably the most motivational tip. Often, these groups do monthly meet up and garden visits, have inspiring speakers, seed and plant swaps. They’re not just for the grey brigade – all ages attend and are welcome.

COVID-19 VACCINE It is a good news for tourism and retail industry about opening up for Aussies to come to NZ. I completely understand and sympathies with them. I think the health ministry should have hurried up and vaccinated most of the population be fore doing so. As we see the COVID-19 tests aren’t 100% and if 1 or 2 visitors slips by it will spread like a wild fire in an unvaccinated population and we be at level 3 or 4 which will hurt the businesses more than ever. So why aren’t they using private nurses and doctors to speed up the vaccine? I understand this vaccine needs specific storage with very cold temperature. It is being given ate QTMC but only in the evenings . So why not use some of the QTMC staff to speed up? I am in Group 3 elderly with chronic conditions and it is already mid April and suppose to get my first shot in May but no appointments no information about when and where? Also, no answers after my 2nd shot what kind of official NZ government issue document would I have that can be used to travel overseas as a proof of being fully vaccinated with lot numbers and official stamps. So far very frustrating waiting while rest of the world is getting vaccinated. Yes, we have been lucky with very few cases but betting on the luck will run out sooner or later unless you take processions.

Parked at Mitre 10 yesterday morning around 9.30 am for half an hour, forgot something and returned later in the afternoon for 15 minutes - was issued with a ticket assuming I’d been there all day!!! Explained to the ‘officer’ the car engine was still warm as I’d only just arrived - he refused to check and handed me the ticket. Anyone else had this happen? What are we supposed to do if we have more than one visit - is this not allowed??!! The Covid App has come in useful - I scanned in at Mitre 10 both trips and a Pak N Save about half an hour after the first visit ... I can at least back up my case, but lets just hope they’ve got brains and can see the glitch in the system. Just thought it worth passing on.

There’s so much out there grabbing my attention, I don’t know where to turn for help. Your feed on social media is designed to keep you scrolling, reading, clicking. Have you ever found that when you discuss something with a friend, like you might like to play tennis, then hey presto, tennis ads start coming up on your feed?
Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Thanks for all the phenomenal feedback about ugly buildings last week - it seems there’s a lot of us wondering how it all still keeps happening. In case you’re interested, I got ZERO feedback from the creators of the mess. But then I didn’t see any representatives of any of the private golf clubs at the ORC meeting about the Lake Hayes restoration project either. Seems the creators of disasters like to stay out of the public eye, hoping that by hiding away, no one will confront them.
We can lose our sense of direction very easily and be navigated to areas of the web we never intended to go, so how do you find the right advice, the right place for help, whatever it is you are wanting help with? Estee Lauder used to say, “ We have a telegram, a telephone and television, in my book give me ‘tell a woman’ any day.” She was referring to how her business grew, not by advertising but by her clients doing it for her. Word of mouth. It is really powerful and your friends will have an opinion on pretty much anything you might want help with and if they don’t they will know someone who will. Here’s my Mind Hacks for getting what you need fast. Mind Hack #1 For getting the right help is to ask your tribe, pop up a post, tell them what you want help with and how you want to feel once it is resolved. You will be amazed what comes back. We needed someone to help us with our twin boys and Sarah put up a post on Social Media. We met the most beautiful person, she has been invaluable to our boys, they adore her and we instantly had the help we needed. Mind Hack #2 Keep on track, set your timer if you head into the online search, set it for 3 minutes and see where you are after the timer goes, are you on track or off piste? Bookmark what is helpful and email, message in that moment, thinking you will come back to it and take action is an illusion. I did this, I wanted help with an online course software provider, I got lost in the youtube void and lost about 40 minutes of my time, watching things that I realised were just not relevant at all. Then I set my timer, it made me eavesdrop on my viewing and kept me focused. In the end we went with a company that one of my clients recommended, Estee Lauder nailed it again! Mind Hack #3 You be in control of your information input rather than be at the mercy of the online ads. I remember when I was much younger and I had a horse, I needed a new saddle, well new to me but a second hand one. My Dad suggested that I put an ad in the local paper asking for exactly what I wanted. His thinking was that people may not have thought about selling but when they read your ad they will. He was right, I had 4 saddles to choose from, all what I needed, it was now about price and condition. So whatever you need help with, take control, make your research count and get the help you need fast.
On the subject of disasters (of the natural variety), I was down in Fiordland to walk to Lake Marian for my friend Clare Doyle’s birthday - happiest happies, dear Clare - such a great way to celebrate. It’s a stiff sort of hike up in the mountains to a beautiful lake and having drenched the whole area the night before, the weather gods decided to shine on us and not make the celebration cake get soggy at the top. Afterwards we took a little tour into Gunns Camp on the Hollyford Road - the scale of the landslide that closed the whole road, potentially forever, is immense. Whole buildings have been wiped out, and I’m sure anyone in there at the time would have been glad the defibrillator still seemed functional. We were talking about barnacles the other day, as someone said they were edible. Apparently, they are a real delicacy in Spain. Another very exciting fact about barnacles is that they have the biggest penises in relation to their body size and they can stretch to eight times their body length. Good gracious!!! Then the subject turned to penis fish which are actually a type of worm - if you google it, you will see how it got the name. Isn’t nature thrilling? Everyone at the medical centre was thrilled on Wednesday night - not least me!! Not about penises, but about the fabulous Covid jab. Wonderful Jennifer Belmont knew I was desperate to get it so I can see my children overseas. She rang to say that she’d heard there might be spare doses after the border workers have been vaccinated, and if you turn up, you might be lucky and get done too. It was nerve-wracking hoping and waiting outside in the dark, and suddenly - we were in and bare armed and armed against the beastly bug. It was a terrific party atmosphere in there with us all celebrating our new status. George Dagg is part of a great and historic local farming family, but his career has taken quite an un-agricultural turn and he’s a performance artist. He and his partner Levi (stage names Phoebe Moore and Indica Wolf) are starting drag bingo (Jingo) nights at the Beach Tree in Queenstown, playing music instead of calling numbers . It’s all about building a stronger queer presence in the community outside of winter pride events and we are so lucky to have these great performers here. I’m definitely coming to the May 9th one, George - thanks so much for letting me know! My calendar will look a lot more interesting now. I know there are some great writers in the community, and if anyone ever wants to take a turn at writing the CBD column, do let me or my editor know (he would probably sigh a huge sigh of relief as I treat deadlines as a suggestion, not an obligation)- I often wonder if people would sometimes like to hear how other locals live their lives here we have so many fascinating personalities in the basin, and I would DEFINITELY like to hear what their week looks like.

COMMUNITY NOTES The Glenorchy Trails Trust Final Mile Fundraiser The Glenorchy Trails Trust is creating a series of Head of the Lake trails to support the ‘Shaping our Future’ master plan. The Trails Trust is focused on creating a recreational trail linking Queenstown and the Greenstone Valley via the head of the lake communities. With $67,000 already raised they are fundraising the remaining $22,000 that will enable the completion of the first kilometer of the trail.
She was nominated for a Silver Scroll for her song ‘Love Will Be A River’, and the album it came from - For the Weary Traveller - won Best Folk album in the NZ Music Award in 2016.
The Final Mile Fundraiser, Benefit Concert - Holly Arrowsmith Holly Arrowsmith was raised in the mountains of Southern New Zealand, and is a strong forerunner in New Zealand’s current folk revivalist movement. Holly was born in New Mexico and raised in Arrowtown. She writes emotionally revealing, honest and thoughtful songs that draw comparisons to the sound of Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake and Gillian Welch, Holly delves into the earnest matters of life- wrapped in metaphors of nature and the soothing mountain landscapes that raised her. At just 27 years old, Arrowsmith has toured both hemispheres with her powerful solo performance, and is known for her wry sense of humour and authentic stage presence.
Arrowsmith will perform live at Camp Glenorchy on Friday 30th April @ 7pm. Tickets for this intimate concert start at $75.00 and proceeds go to the Glenorchy Trails Trust. Very limited tickets available.

Arts+Culture The Arrowtown Autumn Festival Back in February 1985 the Queenstown Promotion Bureau planned an Arrowtown Autumn Festival to help promote the town. Initially it was said to be low key events that would be in keeping with the historical image of the town. The first festival was, as it is now, a huge success with all the events getting capacity audiences. In addition to promoting Arrowtown, the festival is also about locals celebrating the coming of the Autumn colours During the 90’s the festival grew from strength to strength. Each year people come in droves to take in the stunning scenery and see festival attractions such as the street parade, the Arrow Miners Band play on the Old Red truck and the Buckingham Belles Can Can at the lunchtime entertainment. 2021 is the 36th year of the Autumn Festival which continues to attract large numbers of locals and visitors during one of the most colourful times of year. While the festival has grown a lot over the past few years and now has around 30 events over 5 days, it still remains very much a community festival with many locals either performing, volunteering or taking part in some way every year. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival runs from this Thursday the 22nd to Monday 26th April.
Art News Queenstown Contemporary has issued the call to local artists. Queenstown Contemporary’s evolving mission is to create opportunities for artists in the community, and they have just issued an invite to local artists to display their work in their gallery. The call is for artists to submit 2-3 artworks they would like to have exhibited in the new “Regional Showcase” exhibitions, which begins in May and then rotating throughout the remainder of 2021. The gallery has a new layout with the exhibitions facing the busy west side thoroughfare which will be visible to passersby. Five Mile is thriving and only becoming busier over the winter season. The Guidelines Exhibited artists will be on a first come, first served basis. Spaces are limited and QC will create a list of artists to participate progressively in each round. Each round of selected works will be exhibited for a 3-week period. The works must be for sale, be of professional standard and ready to hang/install. Only three people will contest the vacant seat at Queenstown Lakes District Council’s table. The nomination period for the Queenstown-Wakatipu Ward by-election has now closed, prompted by the resignation of Councillor John MacDonald for health reasons. Before the deadline, Emily Rutherford, Esther Whitehead and Phil Wilson put their names in the hat. Rutherford is a company director, entrepreneur, former cheerleader and marketing whizz. She’s the daughter of well known Queenstowners Janet Rutherford and her late husband Robert, who own Glenorchy Air. This summer Emily Rutherford brought the Kiwi Water Park, New Zealand’s largest inflatable water park, to Lowburn Central Otago.

Whitehead is a popular sustainability campaigner, community advocate and educational specialist, having previously been chair of Dyslexia Foundation NZ. She founded Sustainability Queenstown and has been a member of various boards, including the QLDC Climate Advisory Group, Tertiary Education Commission’s Neurodiversity Advisory Group, Ako Aotearoa Neurodiversity Taskforce, Shaping our Future and Start Up Queenstown Lakes Trust. Phil Wilson is a retired local lawyer and community stalwart. He has been president of the Lions Club and Wakatipu Rugby Club, and on the board of Destination Queenstown and the Chamber of Commerce. The by-election will be conducted by post and the delivery of voting papers will start on 20 May. The last day for delivering voting papers is 25 May, with those eligible to vote, who have not received their papers by then, will need to submit a special vote. A preliminary result of the by-election will be released shortly after noon on election day, Friday 11 June.
