Dare to dream What goes through the mind of a local hospitality business owner when our PM steps up to the microphone? I’ll tell you, blah blah hurry up already and get this Aussie Bubble up and running! Then, when the words finally come out “19 April”. Butterflies, excitement, nervousness, fear of false hope. All of the above. We have all learnt a thing or two during the last 12 months. Most importantly, that the only certainty is more uncertainty. However, you would not be human if you did not dare to dream. An open border with our largest tourism market is huge. There is a light at the end of this seemingly never-ending tunnel. Queenstown Airport are talking 20 flights a week. That is a lot of Aussies on the Coronet chairlift, meals at local restaurants and heads on pillows. It certainly will be special to hear that Aussie accent on the streets again. But then the doubt creeps in. We have been promised a golden ticket before and it turned out to be bronze. What’s the worst that could happen this time? Well pretty much everything. Mass vaccinations are still a long way off on both sides of the Tasman and as we all know it only takes one stuff up and it’s back to square one. The government messaging is “flyer beware”. But what is the risk? Another equally ambiguous question is how long is a piece of string. We are told by those who claim to know the risk is “low”. That said, you would be a fool not to have your own business risk management systems in place and finely tuned.

Entrepreneurship is all about putting yourself out there and taking risks. When you have been through what we have over the last 12 months, the tendency is to err on the side of caution, and nobody would blame you if you did. It takes a lot of faith in your business, your team members, Queenstown Inc and of course yourself to put the cash in and gear up, staff up and risk another burn if we have a Covid outbreak that scuttles best laid plans this winter. It is a conundrum that will define Queenstown business in 2021 and probably beyond in this crazy world of sudden change. It is incredibly hard to plan for the unknown, but I am firmly in the camp of dreaming we will be in the profit zone this winter. All pointers are saying so. What’s the worst that could happen again?

Housing Trust hits major milestone for Arrowtown development by Paul Taylor Here’s a first look at the detailed plans for Queenstown’s largest affordable housing project. Sixty-eight homes will be built in the Tewa Banks subdivision, on a 3.6ha residential zoned site located at the western end of Jopp Street, Arrowtown. The new neighbourhood, next to Arrowtown Golf Club, is being developed by the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, to house some of the 740 households on its waiting list. Trust executive officer Julie Scott says it will be a mixed-tenure development, with the houses available for public housing rental, affordable rental, senior housing, rent-to-buy or sold through the trust’s Secure Homes initiative. The Trust has now formally submitted a resource consent application to Queenstown Lakes District Council. “This will be by far the largest development the Trust has undertaken,” Scott says. “It’s been a while in the planning phase, so it’s exciting to have resource consent lodged now. This is a major milestone.” Secure Homes is a progressive home ownership scheme sees buyers only pay for the building itself. The Trust owns the land and the homeowner pays a leasehold rent. That means the one, two, three and four-bedroom properties will likely cost under $450,000, in a district where the median house price tops $1 million. “We’ll know more once we’ve gone to tender for the builds,” Scott says. Award-winning Jerram Tocker Barron Architects have prepared the architectural plans illustrating the overall layout, individual house designs, access and parking. They’ve designed the houses and the site layout to be consistent with old Arrowtown. Scott says the Trust doesn’t anticipate any difficulties with the resource consent. “We’ve been discussing the design and development throughout with Arrowtown Golf Club, who are our neighbours on two boundaries, and also engaging with Arrowtown planning design [Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group] and council. “So were pretty confident we’ve got it right at this stage and don’t anticipate any issues. “Realistically, we could be breaking ground perhaps early spring.” The civil works are estimated to cost about $6 million and construction of the homes is expected to begin in 2022. The development has been named after Jack Tewa who is credited with first discovering gold in the river in 1862. The land, formally oxidation ponds of a wastewater treatment plant, was gifted to the Trust by Queenstown Lakes District Council. The transfer was approved by council in April 2019 and ratified by Minister for Local

Some of the land will be transferred back to the council as a reserve, with the plans showing an adventure forest - designed to stop errant golf balls flying into the neighbourhood. There will also be fruit tree groves, a tree nursery for Arrowtown choppers and land set aside for a potential high-density development, 20 or 30 years down the track. David Clarke, chair or Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group, says its been a “very good collaborative process” with the Trust since the idea was first mooted in July 2018, in his statement attached to the resource consent. “We appreciate the Trust have been prepared to listen and consider our views on planting, landscape materials, walking links, parking and housing orientation to get maximum sunlight, and then make some changes. “We accept concessions have had to be made by both parties and now wish the Trust every success as they move to the next phase of this project.” The consent application comes hot on the heels of the Trust’s latest success last month. It celebrated the completion of its latest affordable housing project, 50 apartments within the Toru Apartments block in Remarkables Park, backed by a $6.35 million 15-year interest-free loan from Government. The Trust has, so far, completed developments in Lake Hayes Estate, Shotover Country, Arrowtown’s Suffolk St, and Albert Town near Wanaka.

Arts+Culture Queenstown’s cool new jazz duo Local music legend Mark Wilson has teamed up with jazz singer Nancy Wilson (no relation) to form a new jazz duo that’ll soon be turning heads. Called ‘Jazzicology’ Mark and Nancy plan to use it as a vehicle for lesser-known jazz standards and unusual compositions. They’re not scheduled to play any gigs just yet, but are building a lively and interesting repertoire of both modern and older jazz numbers. While the pair say the songs are musically technical, they’re picking pieces that are easy to listen to. “We both want to explore and play pieces that aren’t very often performed… there’s an intellectual interest to them,” says Nancy. “There’s some wonderful modern jazz and it is not all completely deconstructed, difficult to listen to stuff. It’s really quite beautiful.” Originally from Taieri Plain, near Dunedin, Nancy has been living and working in the UK for the past two decades. Based in London, she used the opportunity to take jazz singing masterclasses and workshops across Europe. When she moved to Queenstown late last year, almost everybody she talked to about the local jazz scene mentioned pianist Mark Wilson. He’s known for playing jazz, classical, worship and Celtic music and says after a few sessions playing with Nancy “it became apparent we had musical chemistry.” After a long time away from the South Island, Nancy says meeting a local musical legend like Mark was a “wonderful surprise”.

“I hadn’t done much research about the musicality of the place so to find someone of Mark’s calibre here was just the most wonderful surprise and I feel incredibly lucky. “I’ve also been surprised at how supportive of the arts Queenstown is. I don’t think it’s known for that but it is here. There’s the people, there’s recording facilities and these amazing Trusts… being here, you can see that the town is very culturally supportive and I don’t think that’s widely known outside of the town. It deserves to be celebrated.” The pair hope to help put Queenstown on the map culturally, with Mark joking that he’d like the town to become the “jazz adventure capital of the world”. “A lot of people outside of Queenstown think it is a one-dimensional place of ‘tourism, tourism, tourism’, and a million other adventure things and that’s fine… but there’s a resurgence of the arts here,” he says, “The arts are an absolute necessity. It’s so important to have that to balance whatever else is going on. The subdivision application has been submitted recently to Queenstown’s council by Queenstown Commercial Ltd, a company owned by the Sandersons, the developers also behind Queenstown Country Club. “The subdivision contributes to the provision of social, cultural and economic wellbeing and health and safety of the residents and communities,” the application reads. “This is achieved by providing an additional 100 residential lots located between the existing communities of Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate. The comprehensive design of the subdivision ensures that it is integrated into the existing settlements and will provide a safe environment for future residents.” It remains to be seen whether the Government’s new rules for housing investors, including the extension of the Bright-line rules, cool the district’s property market, but demand is likely to be there for Kawarau Heights. The median house price remains above $1m and both Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country have seen record sales in recent weeks. Kawarau Heights would be accessed off Jones Road, which is the road opposite the entrance to the new hospital and Gem’s daycare centre, on the hill between the two existing subdivisions. That’s a busy area, but the traffic consultants who prepared the developers’ report don’t anticipate more traffic than was expected from the 88 planned retirement homes and Boatshed Cafe. There will be a condition, however, whereby the number of sections occupied is limited to 55 until the new roundabout is in place at the junction of SH6 and Howard’s Drive, the main access road to Lake Hayes Estate. The plans also include new walking routes through the subdivision.

In Queenstown the festival is again hosted by the Central Otago Section of New Zealand’s Alpine Club. The club has hosted the festival since 2001. As his sight degenerates, his climbing continues to make remarkable progress. CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

My daughter who lives in Spain is very allergic to nuts, and has to carry an epIpen around with her. So I was quite stressed when she sent a video of herself all puffed up saying “I think I might have eaten a nut”. I’m always neurotic about her and her nut issues, so after ringing and hearing her in peals of laughter, I was grumpy but relieved. It was just an app you can use to see what you look like with Botox and it lets you pump your face up as much as you want. At least hers was only a virtual Botox job - I’ve seen some equally ridiculous real ones and can only wonder why…. So it was hard for me to believe it when she sent me a photo of her banking app which shows she has $2.6 million in her Kiwi Saver, $1.6 in her rapid save account and even $20 thou in her cheque account. She was just as surprised to see those balances as I’m sure the bank was. Who knew the BNZ was so generous? Plenty of generous people are doing so many kind things to make this community better, but there are still some who are just doing horrible stuff. With all the Aussie owners of Wakatipu property soon arriving back, they are going to get the same nasty shock lots of returning and visiting Kiwis have experienced - they’ve been agog at seeing what has happened in the basin in the last couple of years. So many truly nasty buildings have popped up, especially along the Kawarau River and Five Mile and central Queenstown. Even the new library at Frankton is disgusting. WHY do we have to make the buildings ugly? I still haven’t read the new documents about the plans as the last consultation document for the Ladies Mile needed you to say which of the three options you preferred. Actually, not a single one of them. And sounds as if most other people who did it felt the same. That’s not consultation, and sounds like council just pretending they’ve consulted. CON sultation - are we being conned? I’m hooked on Emma Ferris’ fabulous podcast called “CONNING THE CON” - this brave Glenorchy girl and her sister have done a terrific job of telling the story of Emma’s most unpleasant experience. If I didn’t have an angry editor breathing down my neck about me missing my deadline, I’d be listening to the last episode of this true crime drama right now. And for something much more palatable, listen to Nance Wilson and Mark WIlson who’ve formed a new jazz duo called Jazzicology. I specially love “The Ice Hotel” with lyrics by the author Kazuo Ishiguro who’s won just about every literary prize on earth. I’m following them on Facebook and hoping they’ll do a live show soon. Happy birthday to the very creativeTrey Ratcliff - he’s normally all over the world taking his fascinating photos, and taking photographers from every country on his world tours but COVID has kept him here doing even more creative things. His images of the Wakatipu are regularly seen by his millions of followers in every country. Look up his work - his Burning Man Festival pictures are incredible, as are his videos. I especially love his Life from ABove video on YouTube. I’m still hoping for rain - my poor trees are aching for a shower and with no frost, the autumn colours just aren’t happening fully yet. $1000 fines for freedom campers? by Paul Taylor

ITourism Minister Stuart Nash is proposing tougher rules for freedom camping across New Zealand, with people who breach them potentially facing $1000 fines and vehicle confiscations. But, the rules themselves are not as strict as the bylaw Queenstown already has in place, which the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) is challenging through the courts. Nash, has asked for public feedback on a range of ideas to better manage freedom camping. The aim is to reduce the negative impacts on communities and the environment, basically to stop people sleeping in budget vehicles in car parks, reserves and verges, defecating and littering nearby. “The most consistent complaints I hear about the tourism sector relate to abuse of the freedom camping rules,” Nash says. In Queenstown, freedom camping is banned within city limits.” Nash proposes two alternatives: • All vehicle-based freedom camping would be limited to certified selfcontained vehicles only (those with working toilets inside). • Or, vehicle-based freedom campers would be required to either stay at a site with toilet facilities, or stay in a vehicle that is certified as self-contained. Freedom campers on public conservation land and regional parks would be excluded from this requirement. The rules would also tidy up what is regarded as a self-contained vehicle, removing the grey area around adding small portable toilets to normal vans. However, Queenstown’s bylaw is already more restrictive than that. It bans anyone from camping across most of public land in Queenstown and Wanaka, even in fully certified, self contained motorhomes and caravans. Campers instead are forced to use either DoC campgrounds or commercial campgrounds. New Zealand’s largest freedom camping association, the NZMCA, believes that is unfair and last month launched a judicial review, which will see the council taken to the High Court, unless the issue can be resolved. The discussion document also outlines other proposals including tougher penalties, including fines up to $1000 and vehicle confiscations; requiring vehicle rental companies to collect fines, and a regulatory system for certifying self-contained vehicles, and greater powers for councils. Nash adds: “Freedom camping in self-contained vehicles has a place for Kiwis and international visitors. “However change is needed where vehicles are not self-contained, so communities have more confidence in the system. We want clear rules and expectations so we can deliver a high quality visitor experience.” He believes improving regulations will change behaviour which threatens NZ’s “unique and precious qualities”. Nash says the proposed changes are in line with new priorities for tourism once the borders reopen, a sustainable model that mitigates the negative impacts. “Private campgrounds offer sites from around $20 a night. DoC has hundreds of campsites, many of which are free or as low as six dollars a night.”

Dawn of a new era for NZ Open by Paul Taylor Competitive rounds of the New Zealand Open will be held solely at Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort next year, with neighbouring club The Hills taking a step back. The 102nd Open will be played over two courses at Millbrook from February 24-27, 2022. Millbrook has 27 holes but is in the process of developing another nine holes, which should be open to members by the end of this year. A field of around 152 professionals and 152 amateurs will play the pro-am event over a various combinations of the 18-hole championship courses over the four days. Millbrook’s owner Gota Ishii, is delighted to have Millbrook host all four competitive rounds for the first time. “Since our investment in the new nine holes, it has been a dream to host the entire New Zealand Open tournament at Millbrook. “This only enhances Millbrook as one of the premiere golf resorts in the South Pacific, now delivering not one, but two championship courses.” The tournament will be broadcast to over thirty countries round the globe, with a potential audience of over 320 million households. Sir Michael Hill’s course The Hills, which saved the Open back in 2007, will continue to be involved though, with the Saturday pro-am event (featuring professionals and amateurs who miss the day two cut) to be played at there. Sir Michael says: “It’s been wonderful to be part of the tournament’s evolution over the last 13 years. “It makes sense for Millbrook to now take over the full hosting of competition play adding a new dimension to the New Zealand Open. “We are pleased to continue our involvement by hosting a number of amateurs and professional players on the Saturday of Open week, I’m sure they will thoroughly enjoy The Hills experience.” Jack’s Point continue their ten-year support of the tournament by hosting some of the other golfing events that now make up what has become a weekly ‘festival of golf’.

QT BUSINESS Eggs, baskets and one positive from Covid-19 by Peter Harris, QLDC General Manager Property and Infrastructure It seems so obvious looking back. We had too many tourism eggs in our economic basket. We knew disruptions to tourism can happen, but we’d navigated these before - SARS and the Global Financial Crisis put a short term dent in tourism growth but we bounced back quickly. Growth pressures caused stress on infrastructure, people and our environment but the problems we faced were preferable to some other New Zealand communities grappling with high unemployment, and intergenerational poverty.

We weren’t blind to the need to spread our economic risk, but just like that nagging intention to update our will or refresh our earthquake emergency kit, it’s easy to put these things off when you are busy being busy. We had made a start. ‘The Cube’ in Wanaka supported start-ups, Study Queenstown helped grow the number of international students, and Film Otago Southland promoted the region. A strategy was created and in 2017 and I was lucky enough to be appointed the first economic development manager for the district. Between then and 2020 we helped create Startup Queenstown Lakes, coordinate workforce initiatives, and build a local film office. The bulk of the funding and effort remained focussed on promoting the district to visitors, dealing with the infrastructure challenges of a growing number of locals and visitors, and responding to a community increasingly disgruntled that their little patch of paradise was getting (too) busy. With 6 out of 10 workers being employed in tourism and almost everyone affected in some way by this dominant industry, this focus seemed inevitable. And then came Covid-19. It may not have been as devastating as predicted (8000 jobs lost) but for every person who has lost their job or business income, it has been incredibly traumatic. And it’s not over yet. Our conversations have become dominated by talk of bubbles, wage subsidies, vaccinations, lockdowns – and diversification. Why hadn’t we done more to diversify? What ideas could solve this and what would it take to turn us into Silicon Valley? People floated ideas to the Mayor, and via the media. A few of these are slowly coming to fruition, but most sit in a digital suggestion box, waiting for someone to drive them forward. Ideas are valuable, but people willing to make them happen are priceless. Slowly, good people have been putting their hand up. Some of their businesses and projects were in the wind prior to Covid-19 but the crisis has made them more committed to making them real. While not all will come to fruition there are amazing opportunities being worked on including tech

training, software that helps hospitality businesses, film studios, start-up investment, off-the-grid energy solutions, and strategies to grow tech across the region. Diversification is never easy, or fast. Building new industries and businesses takes time and we will need a portfolio of initiatives – including; • Fostering start-ups businesses

• Growing industry ‘smart specialisations’ (e.g. software for the tourism industry) • Attracting individuals committed to growing a team in the district • Encouraging existing businesses to relocate some or all of their team to our district • Ensuring the ‘ecosystem’ here makes it easy to create new opportunities (e.g. access to investors and talent) While it is a daunting challenge, we have some unique advantages. The people behind some of the projects have incredible international business experience and contacts, and there are already great tech businesses in the district. We are also a place that talent wants to live. As the work

opportunities grow, workers and entrepreneurs will gain more and more confidence that they can build a future here The government is realising the role our district can play in growing ‘weightless’ exports. They are recognising that Queenstown Lakes is home to entrepreneurs that not only run great tourism businesses, but do business around the world in other industries. Covid-19 has been devastating for tourism, but it remains our largest industry. We need it to recover and to also build economic ‘insurance’ through diversification. With the commitment of our local community, entrepreneurs, organisations including the QLDC economic development team, and recognition from government of our potential to grow new industries, we can spread our economic eggs into more baskets. There is no denying the pain that Covid-19 has caused our district. When we look back in 10 years at this time those scars will remain, but we may also recognise it as the moment when diversification went from something we were putting off, to something we embraced as a community.

The golden age of Queenstown? by Paul Taylor

While much of the talk is about making Queenstown the Silicon Valley of the Southern Hemisphere, there’s another Californian industry that could provide a feasible route to a diversified economy. Queenstown’s love affair with the silver screen is nothing new, it’s already the third largest film production centre in New Zealand, after Auckland and Wellington, in terms of production expenditure. About 100 professional productions are filmed here each year, everything from major blockbusters, such as The Lord of the Rings and Mission Impossible: Fall Out, to TV shows including Top of The Lake and One Lane Bridge, music videos, commercials and dozens of smaller online/social media shoots. And, with the explosion in content hungry streaming platforms such as Netflix, there are once again moves to take the next step and build a proper studio. News broke last month that Silverlight Studios Limited has applied to the Ministry for the Environment for fast-tracked consent to build a huge facility on a 332-hectare site off The Wanaka Luggate Highway. The proposal includes four purpose-built sound stages, VFX stages, workshops, a replica of New York’s Central Park, a film school and a theatre. The company’s owned by Ra Vincent, an Oscarnominated production designer and artist whose recent work includes Taika Waititi projects Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok (including designing Hulk’s bed), along with director Mike Wallis and film accountant Jonathan Harding. There are also rumours of a virtual production technology studio in Queenstown itself, while a Paradise Studio was mooted for Gibbston. That project is led by Ryan Leggatt, son-in-law of $160 million Richlister Tim Edney, a property investment specialist who last year bought the

iconic Arcadia Station at Paradise, itself a notable filming location. Arrowtown-based Great Southern Television chief executive and executive producer Phil Smith, whose company is currently filming the second series of One Lane Bridge in the town, says there has been talk of studios for decades. And they’re expensive affairs. The Iskandar Malaysia Studios for example, built in 2014, cost upwards of $150 million. But if and when one is built, even a single basic sound stage, the potential upside for the district is immense, Smith says. “Queenstown has everything to offer but a studio,” he says. “It’s got an international airport, a huge hotel resource, and also crew, so in many ways it’s the missing piece of the jigsaw to lift the industry to the next level. “The key thing is getting a roof over your head so you can shoot on rain days. If you’re outside and it rains for 10 days, that’s a disaster. “It would give producers and studios the ability to plan more clearly, and that would drive the appeal of the region. “We’re seeing a real shift to the southern hemisphere, particularly Australasia, with really large producers, production companies and studios. All the international streamers are always looking for homes. “So the likelihood is if someone takes the risk and builds a studio, there’d be a in a strong position. It doesn’t even need to be that flash.” Smith estimates Great Southern spends about half of its $8 million One Lane Bridge budget in Queenstown, employing 80% local crew, hiring caterers, cars and many other ancillary businesses.

“Renting houses is a big one for us, and that scales up for the likes of Mission Impossible, who’ll come in and rent nicer houses.” And it’s a double spend, with the actors and crew supporting local businesses.

“Having film people in town is awesome because they’re real spenders. They go out to restaurants all the time, bring down family and friends, and do all the touristy stuff.” “I see people from One Lane Bridge everywhere, Joe’s Garage, Pak’nSave. Look at Bespoke Cafe, that was Mission Impossible Cafe basically.” And, as happened with The Lord of The Rings, every production filmed against Queenstown’s stunning backdrops is basically a free ad for the tourism industry beamed around the world. The district is home to approximately 200 film crew workers, and around 50 businesses that supply services and equipment to the film industry, while there are 280 services listed on Film Otago Southland’s directory. But that could grow exponentially, if a studio is eventually built, with more work on offer and fewer slow periods throughout the year. Australia’s Byron Bay has in recent years become a creative hub, thanks to studios in Queensland, and Smith believes Queenstown could follow suit, especially with Government investment in the industry as a whole. “It’s a billion-dollar industry but could be a fourbillion-dollar industry.” Queenstown Lakes Film Office Coordinator Kahli Scott says a studio would be a “gamechanger” for the local industry, helping to helping to attract a larger and more diverse range of film production. “It would particularly help with securing longerterm feature film and TV series production, which frequently require studio space.” Even without one, the local industry is going strong, despite Covid. The film office has received more than 90 individual enquiries about filming in the region since July last year, which include enquiries regarding permits, locations, crew, equipment, facilities and more.

“There are currently five larger (film and television) projects actively considering the Queenstown Lakes district for filming over the next six months,” Scott says, “with an additional eight large projects considering the wider Otago and Southland region.”

Timbers have a past and a story to tell; they have scars and character. There is an art in salvaging materials, an art in recycling, and giving timber a new opportunity to retell its story. It’s a big part of why we do what we do. We love the process of transformation, and the idea our creations having a past and a new future. We believe in the value of having a piece of furniture that is also a conversation starter, with its own story to tell, it’s also proof of transformation. New Zealanders and NZ society generally is increasingly trying to shift from fast consumerism into a more sustainable living culture and nowhere is that more transparent than in this region. It’s evident throughout our business whether its “Supporting Local” which has become a common theme throughout the country, and like many other local businesses in the area, we are constantly associating with other local businesses, such as suppliers or providers of specialized services in order to create a positive impact in the community in general. It’s true that when you buy from one of us, you are helping many of us. This area is filled with talented people who are willing to participate on collaborations. By using recycled materials from renewable sources there is long lasting positive benefits for the environment. All the natural timbers we choose to work with CAN be REDUCED, REUSED, and RECYCLED by us, in our workshop, and this is our approach to being a greener business.

We even recycle the sawdust we create at our busy workshop; we collect it and give it to “Biodynamic Community Otago” and the “Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens” for them to turn it into a high quality compost. We are proud to engage in all the additional work required to ensure that no other material is going in with the sawdust, as it needs to be from untreated natural timber only, with no paint, no nails no varnish, otherwise it would contaminate the compost. Sustainability is a key factor in Rustic Soul Designs ethos. Majority of the timber we use is repurposed wood, denailed, reshaped, sanded, cut, stained into something new and unique. Each brief differs from client to client and the business is seeing increased interest in high value long lasting wooden furniture made by us. He says many customers are returning to a culture of reusing and repurposing rather than disposing of items. We try our best to share the history of the timbers we use and recycle. We believe in the sentimental and emotional value of sharing the journey of each piece of wood, the place it grew, and the journey it made from seed to our hands; the transformation process and their new beginning. Their past is not always available, but most of the time, the information presents itself to the curious. A community project, for example, we recently finished was a couple of tables for the Arrowtown Primary School, where the timber slab used for the table tops was once a 130 year old tree, that was planted at White Chapels Rd. It has now found a new home less than 4km away from its growing place. An iconic piece in our studio is a table and benches that belongs to the Charred Collection, made out of recycled Rimu timber, and salvaged from the O’Connell’s mall renovation that now sits proud in our showroom in Arrowtown, displaying the old nail marks as scars of the past. Each one of our pieces is unique and beautiful, inspired by the client’s personality and the nature around us. I am a voluntary mentor for Business Mentors New Zealand, as well as running my own business consultancy and recently I was asked to help a business that supplies the tourist industry. As you can imagine it’s been badly bruised as a result of Covid, but the owner has approached the situation with a clear and well-planned path. A complete review of the business was conducted and many aspects of the business had to be recalibrated to match their current trading circumstances. What the results achieved is something we can all learn from as well as the process that was undertaken,

It will provide a much-needed boost to our Queenstown economy. Picking up the paper last week after the announcement it was pleasing to see already that our friends from across the ditch are planning their winter holidays here. I know for many of you it hasn’t been an easy time these past 12 months, but what you have done for your staff and this community by keeping your doors open has meant the rebuild of our economy will be a far easier journey.

The key elements that were addressed included – engaging the landlord, the competition, the company structure, retaining qualified staff, while reducing operational costs, and maintaining productivity with a lower revenue base, and delaying new products and services.

We also must acknowledge however, that this announcement has come too late for some, and businesses which have been here for decades are now gone.

Some very bold moves resulted in a new totally innovative operational process, a somewhat cheeky approach to competition and very hard decisions were made to delay innovation.

The ski season is just around the corner and while many of us are lapping up the good news we need a game plan and fast.

All the decisions were data driven and as a result the company is now profitable all be it at a lower income level with a well-placed detailed plan ready to take advantage of growth, when it comes. This sort of story can be applied to any SME. While each business will have differences, all have common issues, and the key ones are. • Leaving the uncertainty about timing and extent of when business will return, out of the equation! Plan for what you know, but leave the plan flexible, to take advantage of changes when they occur. • Arranged for the availability of working capital and cashflow for when its required. Have a Business plan that includes projected profit and loss, cash flow forecasts and most importantly regular reviews of the business results. Having all this info available for the Bank (or other sources) gives a strong positive feel about the business. • Consider the operational issues such as geography, stock control and useable space etc. • Some price modelling with a more flexible plans able to be put in place based on the trading environment. • Conduct a review of the Unique Selling Proposition– in this case it resulted in a slight change of direction that no one else could follow. But we must look forward.

Before the Trans-Tasman bubble announcement, many in the ski industry were highlighting the labour shortage which would soon loom. It has been an ongoing issue across the tourism sector, as work visas have expired and people have had to return to their home countries. The heavy criteria in place around people obtaining work visas from Immigration New Zealand also means that trying to attract a new workforce for this busy period will be challenging. One thing Queenstown has shown over the past 12 months is how resilient it is and that with hope, we will keep fighting to get the staff we need. While we’ve been patient, what we need now is a proactive approach to adjust our immigration settings in response to the trans-Tasman bubble announcement. We will need to see a more streamlined way for the workers needed for the season to come to New Zealand. We know that with the bubble in place, spaces will free up in our managed isolation facilities and it would make sense that our workers who are needed for the ski season are prioritised - especially those in specialist positions needed to ensure the season goes ahead. I will be advocating for the industry in Wellington to get what is needed. For now though, like many of you, I will take a moment to enjoy the good news following months of lobbying and look forward to seeing our good friends from across the Tasman in our region again. Queenstown Taxis managing director Grant Scannell is used to thinking outside of the square. In 2017, the transport industry was de-regulated, opening up the market to independent operators and big tech companies like Uber. Unfortunately, this meant that locally owned and operated taxi companies took a hit. “We needed to make sure that our company stayed financially sustainable, we had to keep our doors open,” says Grant. “We have shareholders and operators… all of our people are putting money into the economy and if we shut down, that money wouldn’t be going into the local economy anymore. I’m a big believer in keeping it local, keeping it small. It’s hard, but we do our best to service locals.” Queenstown Taxis started offering vehicle maintenance services to the public, hiring out their specialist automotive electrician. The company also offer sightseeing and wine tours, wedding transport and are ACC and mobility card transport providers. When Covid-19 hit, the company teamed up with other local businesses like Fresh Choice to offer a food delivery service. “Obviously, Covid hit us big time. But we know it’s important to diversity. Two years ago, we started hiring out our auto sparky, Dan, who has 30 years’ experience and has been doing our work for 20-odd years.

“This year, we opened up our workshop and hired a full-time mechanic. Everyone in our workshop is a qualified tradesperson. I’m an upholsterer and canvas worker by trade and we’ve offered that up as well.

“Queenstown Taxis has been around for 60 years, and I won’t see it go under on my watch. That’s why we diversify. We’re going to be here for another 60.”

“It’s just been going off. The moment one job is finished, another walks in through the door. For the upholstery side of things, we’ve had to look at hiring an apprentice. “What I’ve found, is that because people aren’t going away on holiday, they’re spending money on things at home and they’re re-doing things. We don’t seem to be a throw-away society right now, we’re into getting things fixed, which I think is great.” Grant explains that the transport industry as a whole has changed dramatically over the years and the pandemic wasn’t the first challenge they’d faced. Deregulation of the industry meant it was easier and cheaper than ever before for individuals to become independent taxi drivers, but the Queenstown Taxi team have still insisted on a fourday rigorous training programme for all of their new drivers. Their dedication to safety and being part of the local community has been their point of difference. “Some people say that taxis are ridiculously expensive, but we haven’t put our prices up since 2011. Everything we do, we do it above and beyond… safety, GPRS, cameras, tracking of all our vehicles. It’s that level of service.
