Hotops Rise tree removal review Trees are an important part of every community. They increase our quality of life, contribute to our environmental health and provide a peaceful and beautiful setting for everyone to enjoy. Our district is no exception and we know that trees are a great source of pride for our local community. Which is why it is not surprising to hear concerns raised from the community when trees are proposed to be removed. If you’ve been in the town centre recently, you’ll know that construction is well underway on our town centre street upgrades. More specifically if you’ve wandered along Hotops Rise you would have seen that a large number of trees have ribbons tied around them indicating their possible removal to make way for an improved walking and cycle path. The removal of some trees in that location has been earmarked for a couple of years now. In March 2019 we received design drawings for the new shared cycle and pedestrian path which will provide a key link and make it far safer and more enjoyable to walk, cycle and use other non-motorised transport options. At the time we shared these drawings with a range of people for feedback and the general consensus was that while it was a shame to lose some trees in the area, most of them were Douglas Fir or in poor health, and the reasons for doing so were acceptable. In 2020 it was a boost to the project to receive $35m from the Government’s Crown Infrastructure Partners ‘Shovel Ready’ Fund to progress the town centre street upgrades. This is where we get to the pointy end. We had a shared path design that was acceptable to the community but the reality is, design drawings are just lines on paper. It’s not until you move in to construction and get people on the ground that you really understand the implications and benefits of a project. The Hotops Rise shared path upgrade is no exception. We took our construction experts and arborist down to the site and it quickly became apparent that when we start removing trees, the root structure and safety of other trees is affected. The knock on effect of this is significant and would result in an extensive number of trees needing to be removed from this area, vastly changing the way it looks and feels. We were as surprised as you are and quickly began conversations with the local Friends of the Gardens group and our wider team about where to next. Following those conversations we have committed to looking at options for redesigning the path to reduce the impact on the neighbouring trees. For this reason, our construction team has stopped work on Hotops Rise and we’ll come back to the community when we know more. Peter Hansby QLDC General Manager Property and Infrastructure

Queenstown swimmer tackles NZ’s big three By Paul Taylor

Seven years after spinal surgery halted her competitive career, Queenstown swimmer Liana Smith is about to attempt New Zealand’s fabled open water Triple Crown.

She could, however, lay claim to having overcome the most challenging personal circumstances. Aged 17, she was a NZ record holding swimmer, training 26 hours a week in the pool and gym. But she’d been dealing with debilitating back pain for about three years, and, despite chiropractic treatment, it got to the point where she was having severe leg spasms and could barely move. She was then diagnosed with two pars defect (stress fractures) of her vertebrae. “One side had actually fractured three years previously, which was when I started having the pain, but I kept ‘she’ll be righting’ it and training, swimming, Olympic lifting, cross training. “By the time the other side fractured, the first side had fully become its own bone entity and separated off.

“So, getting some metal and screws in was the only way to fix it.” The spinal fusion left her bed bound for a couple of months and she then had to learn basic motor skills again. “Happening a such an age, it took a toll on me and I lost who I was for a number of years, including my love of the water.” Smith, who is raising funds for Kiwi mental health charity I Am Hope, says the surgery and slow recovery sent her down a “pretty dark path”. Over the past few years, however, with the help of family and friends, she’s re-established herself and rediscovered “this feeling of completeness when swimming”. “I’ve set my heart on finally achieving these personal bucket-list swims.” After swimming up to 45k a week in training in recent months, about four hours a day in the water, she’s now on her way up to Wellington to meet with NZ marathon swimming legend Phil Rush and attempt either the Cook Straight or Lake Taupo in about two weeks, depending on the weather. She’ll then tackle the Foveaux Straight when the favourable tides come in Spring, before hopefully completing the remaining swim next summer. Each of the three swims present their own challenges, from distance, tides and the cold, to marine life, including sharks. All swims are unassisted - she can’t even wear a wetsuit. The Queenstown adventurer is also hoping for some sponsorship support from the resort’s business community.

Arts+Culture Calling all teddy bears: big picnic this week!

If you head down to the Event Centre this weekend, you’re in for a big surprise… Teddy bears and their humans are invited to the Events Centre on Sunday (11am – 2pm) to take part in a grand teddy bears’ picnic. Originally the Teddy Bears picnic was scheduled to be held on Sunday 7th of March, and had to be rescheduled as a result of the updated Alert Levels. On the 11th there’ll be music and dancing, popcorn and barbeques, stories and fairies. The QLDC initiative aims to bring our communities together post-Covid; it’s free and suitable for kids of all ages (but aimed at those up to 12 years old). All you need to do is bring your favourite teddy bear along to join in the fun. We gave organiser Janey Rae Labes and her teddy bear a call to find out more. What can we expect at the Teddy Bears’ Picnic? Lots! There’ll be entertainment on the stage, roaming characters, a real life teddy bear, games and prizes, bubbles, hula hooping, sports games to try, a horizontal bungy and bouncy castle, free face painting and a free sausage. What sort of food will be at the picnic? There’ll be Suma’s sushi, Vice cream (delicious dairy-free ice cream), Pop n’ Gales popcorn and even a free BBQ. You can bring along your own picnic, or buy treats from the vendors. Apart from their humans, is there anything the teddy bears should bring? There will be prizes for best dressed and you can interpret what that means, whether it’s a fancy, well-pressed outfit or something crazy that your teddy bear is dressed in. Teddy bears can show us how loved they are and there’s prizes up for that too! Tell me a little bit about the storytellers involved? There’ll be local author Laura Shallcrass with her beautifully illustrated book, Hare and Rere. Musician and author Gemma Carroll will be bringing her new book too, Bongo’s Adventures – the Stowaway Mouse, this is a wonderful book that she completed in lockdown.

There will be a story telling area, our local library will be in the Beautiful Belle Tent with a cozy corner to read stories and discover new books. Can you tell me a little bit about the music? The music is local too. Gemma Carroll, as well as presenting her new book, will be singing with her husband John. Children’s performer Margaret Amor will entertain the children with some of her original kids songs and vibrancy. The Turn up the Music Trust will present a musical piece from their band and a group of ballet performers from the Wakatipu Conservatoire of Ballet will perform a couple of routines, including a dance to the Teddy Bear’s Picnic Song. What else is happening? This event will be inviting for kids up to 12 years old, so not just the young ones! We have the horizontal bungy operated by Bungy and a bouncy castle for the smaller kids. Emma and her team from Sports Coaching will be in the cricket nets with demonstrations and a chance to hit the ball. Big games and colouring in will also feature at this event. There’ll be a police car and fire engine, and Civil Defence and other community groups like Happiness House, Plunket and Big Buddy will feature at the event too. This week I’d like to highlight some of the amazing achievements of the district’s mokupuna, our children and young people, our future. If we need to be reminded of the ingenuity that has established our district’s culture and industry, we need only to look to our young dramatists, musicians, athletes and scholars. Recently, with the baggage of a lockdown year, the cancellation of flights, events and trainings, and, with both of our local high schools currently in significant redevelopment phases, our young people have overcome to achieve national and international recognition on a number of platforms. On the snow, Wanaka legends Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteous have added to their already remarkable list of achievements by both winning gold on the same day at the FIS World Championships in Aspen, Colorado. Similarly, local Arrowtown teenager, Alice Robinson won the giant slalom in the Women’s World Cup in Lenzerheide, Switzerland earlier last week. The logistics required to achieve these successes, aside from the pressures of families separated by border closures over the past year, baffle me and make these international accolades all the more astounding. In the water, and after overcoming severe pain and injury, Queenstown Resort College alumni Liana Smith is about to attempt New Zealand’s open water swimming Triple Crown of successful crossings of Lake Taupo (40.2km), Cook Straight (22km) and the challenging Foveaux Straight (28km). Only 6 other kiwis have completed this combination previously so all the very best to Liana, we’re right behind you. On the water this time and Wakatipu Rowing Club, situated at Lake Hayes, has enjoyed growing membership for a number of years. For a sport which demands teenagers be present, alert and at their physical peak at a very early hour of the morning, most days of the week – this small rowing club does extremely well to produce a number of high quality athletes, many of whom were recently recognised as some of the best in the country. Rowing under the Wakatipu High School banner, Marley King Smith and Sam McAtamney won gold in the Under 16 Double Sculls, while bronze was achieved in the Boys Under 15 Octuple Sculls and Girls Under 16 Double Sculls at the recent National Championship Regatta. Parents tell me that while many of the competing private schools had catering staff and marquees, our local kids got the job done with a lunchbox full of bacon and egg pie and borrowed gazebo parked up behind a toilet block. Resilience, ingenuity and determination ably demonstrated here. The future of the district’s creative ability is also something we can be sure of. Across a number of different art platforms, potential is thriving across the district. Rave reviews were heard for the young musicians on show at the recent Arrow Sounds festival. Junior authors from Arrowtown School were awarded prizes at a national writing competition last week and the Wakatipu High School production of Grease saw a cast and crew of 90 impress sold out crowds over a number of nights. To all of our local parents, coaches, teachers and mentors that facilitate these achievements and enable our young people to be the best that they can be, I say an enormous thank you. For our youth and our future you are doing a great act of service.

Nash says round five of TIF ensures central government investment in visitor projects can continue while work continues to open quarantine-free travel with Australia, and other international connections when it is safe to do so. Theatre and Music Gems at Festival of Colour Wanaka’s Festival of Colour opens in less than two weeks and we’ve dived into the programme to discover hidden gems you won’t want to miss – theatre with monsters and magic, and music shows uncovering secrets of songs and stories (and some beautiful hand-drawn animation). The Festival of Colour opens on Sunday 11 April and runs across eight days with more than 40 shows and events. Singer Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), has lost count of the number of times she’s featured at the festival – and she can’t wait to be back this year.

Firstly Wanaka is just beautiful, but what’s special is the Wanaka audience – they really are up for it and are really appreciative and that makes performing there that much more pleasurable.” This year she’s joining Mel Parsons and Bella Kalolo in a special show Found in Translation – with the three women exploring the meanings behind songs. “These are songs we love and the different interpretations and what songs mean to different people.” Julia said most of the songs come from the three women’s own backcatalogues ‘but there are some cracker covers in there too.” Also returning to the festival are audience favourites Trick of the Light Theatre whose earlier works The Bookbinder and The Road That Wasn’t There have featured in the festival’s programmes. This year they bring two shows Tröll and The Griegol.

“When we were in Wanaka last time with The Road That Wasn’t There, people really wanted to see how things were done. The choreography of how the performers move around each other to create the effects is so beautiful that it deserves to be seen,” Hannah said. But, Ralph promises, there is still plenty of magic which will still have people wondering. Anthonie Tonnon hasn’t always been interested in trains – or so he says. But a chance discovery of an abandoned subway station in Dunedin leads him on a journey and in Rail Land, audiences are along for the ride for “a journey of the mind”. Creating soundscapes and telling stories of life, history and memories, Rail Land’s magic is in the unexpected turns it will take you on while experiencing Anthonie’s acclaimed songs.

Tröll was created four years ago and first staged in theatremakers Ralph McCubbin-Howell and Hannah Smith’s Wellington house. “The audience sat on our stairs and I performed in a tiny 1 metre square area,” Ralph said. The pair recreated the show for a theatre stage and have now performed it throughout New Zealand, Australia and in Edinburgh. Set in the ‘90s in the days of dial up internet, it is the story of 12-year-old Otto and his relationship with family and an Icelandic thousands-of-years-old troll. “It plays on the idea of trolls of myth and trolls found on the Internet today,” Hannah said. Like Tröll, The Griegol, which had its world premiere at Auckland Arts Festival last month, combines fantastical storytelling with Trick of the Light’s

Pixie Williams was New Zealand’s first pop star and her song ‘Blue Smoke’ was one of the most enduring melodies of the twentieth century and covered by international stars including Dean Martin. In this show, Riki Gooch, together with singers Kirsten Te Rio, Rachel Fraser and Lisa Tomlins bring Pixie’s music back to life. The concert celebrates the release of the new album ‘The New Blue: Pixie Williams Reimagined’. Twenty Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts were in Queenstown last Sunday for the third annual black belt meeting. They were hosted by Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Queenstown. There are around 70 black belts of the popular grappling and submission-based martial art in New Zealand.

Even experts struggle for motivation I thought this month I’d talk about what went wrong in my garden this year. As Dr Compost everyone assumes my garden is amazing always and forever. Ha-ha if only this was true.

So Autumn is here and it’s not all bad. I am building up to replacing all the soil in my tomato bed maybe next month for that one. I’m actually looking forward to creating the dream mix for them.

I battle with crises of motivation like everybody else, I have failures, hiccups and downright disasters. It is from all of these that my greatest learnings comes…. I’ve talked about it many times… ‘observation’ is one of the greatest on-going keys to success for us gardeners. As much as I want to forget about these disasters, taking time to learn from them makes all of us better gardeners.

All that hard work didn’t all go to miss, sure there are a few empty beds, some strategies required for the thistle invasion, but we are eating out of the veggie garden nearly every day. Turns out rabbits don’t like corn once it’s established and onions and zucchinis and so on. It’s in those early days as seedlings that they’re most vulnerable. I have a netting policy for

This season started so well, there’s nothing like hosting a garden tour to lift your game, yet this may have been where I peaked in late November. Shortly after hosting this visit, I enthusiastically pulled down my crap… not working rabbit proof fence, ready to replace it with a Fort Knox, boobie trapped ‘n’ all version. That was my first error. Suddenly life got busy, enthusiasm drained, and the new fence didn’t go up. Enter an army of rabbits!!! Bastards all of them!!!!

Next the thistle invasion came……... You can dig as many of these invaders as you like out, the tiniest bit of root left behind deep in the earth’s core and if by magic a few weeks later more thistles emerge. I went on strike when summer arrived, which I find is also my least energetic time in the garden, which was easy to observe as I kept far far away from the veggie patch. Then yes there’s more. My tomatoes pretty much told me to get lost, as they struggled in soil that’s grown tomatoes for over 20 years. No amount of compost and goodies was going to pep these tommies up. Did I mention losing all my tomato seedlings earlier in the season to what I suspect was glyphosate contaminated commercial potting mix… Another time.

everything we sow and plant to keep the birds at bay, works pretty well for rabbits as long as they don’t sit on or chew through the netting to get at your crop. To deal with lack of motivation, visiting other people’s gardens is the winner for me. I’ve been lucky enough to be a judge and visit many veggie gardens as part of this months Wanaka A and P show ‘Grow a Patch’ competition. To blow my mind even more, many of these gardens and gardeners were in their first season

of growing veggies. What lush bounties of growing food to be inspired by, they were by and large nearly all amazing. Some joke that your first year is your best ever and it’s downhill from here on. If that’s the case, there’s hope for me yet as I don’t feel like I’ve peaked just yet. That should keep me brimming with enthusiasm for the next 20 years with any luck. The moral from all these titbits, keep trying, keep learning from your mistakes and keep growing lots of vegetables you never know when the zombie apocalypse might come. Take pride every year in something you grew really well, even if it is a selfseeded ‘silverbeet’. You did all the hard work to create the space for it to flourish. Talk to your fellow gardeners and visit each other’s gardens and get inspired. Your garden is an inspiration and motivator for somebody out there, trust me, I’m inspired by every garden I visit. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Hope you’ve all had a fabulous Easter to follow up on yet another wonderful week in the Wakatipu. Huge cheers to all the team who made Arrow Sounds such a success. It was lovely seeing Arrowtown’s main street packed with locals all enjoying themselves and chatting while patiently waiting to get into some of the venues. Marion Botherway always looks sexy, and even managed to look fab in a ridiculous hotdog suit. Under no circumstances will I ever be able to look like Marion, but still had a great time doing what I call dancing to Leeann Malcolm and her Lumsden Calling band. I didn’t manage to stay in town long enough for things to get even hotter - there are photos of some very handsome young musicians playing in the Blue Door just in their undies, as it got so sweaty in there. Quite understandable!! If they’d wanted to cool down, there’s no better place than the lake full of icebergs at Mt Cook. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone there now, but my London sis and her family were very keen to see this terrifying way to understand the immediacy of climate change. The Tasman glacier is NZ’s largest, and the Glacier Explorers trip takes you from The Hermitage at Mt Cook to this new lake created by the glacier melting. Small boats whizz you round the icebergs, and you can fish tiny ones out with your hands and admire this ancient ice. Even from the safety zone away 500meters from the terminal face, the glacier creaks and groans and rumbles as huge slabs of ice and rock crash into the lake. The whole Hermitage was booked out this weekend so we had to do it as day trip - doable, but much better to stay the night and enjoy all the walks and stargazing and everything else Aoraki National Park has to offer. And another body of water that needs to be admired and cared for is Lake Hayes - there’s an important meeting on April 8th at the Events Centre 5.30 pm to discuss the environmental restoration of this local treasure. If you haven’t walked round it lately, do notice the terrific changes - Justin Crane and Kirsty MacTaggart (ably assisted by their 8 year old Rory, and Gus, the dog) have planted thousands of native trees at the outlet end of Lake Hayes.I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many birds, and so many different species by the lake. Mike Hanff deserves huge praise too, for all his work getting the community to understand how important it is that this iconic site gets protected. It’s annoying having to be on such full alert for terrible things happening in the community - the shovel ready horrors that are seeing all sorts of important trees being chopped down in Hotops Rise, the destruction of the Memorial Hall and Rugby Clubrooms… If the government is going to fund these projects, why not say we’d like the money, but WE want to decide what it should be used for. What is the rush? Do go and get your copy of the 10 year plan - I’m guilty of not having read it yet, either, but it’s sitting glaring at me as I type this. For more enjoyable pastimes this week, don’t miss the Salsa Festival on all this weekend - learn how to wiggle and sashay in that very sexy South American way, and watch the absolute experts - dangerously exciting. Or book a place for the Piano Yoga at the events centre on Saturday afternoon - it’s a fundraiser for Alzheimers and Kinga Krupa will be playing the piano as we stretch and groan with Clarissa Benke teaching us. Possibly less sexy than the salsa festival, but still should be a great experience and a VERY good cause.
