Community solidarity will prevent more damage as uncertainty continues. It’s now more than a year since the border closed and still there is great uncertainty around the path forward. Our district continues to shoulder one of the heaviest burdens to uphold the government’s health policies, and it comes at a great cost to us. We have lost thousands of jobs and sit on a knife edge that could see scores of family owned businesses fail. Together with other lower South Island towns, we have achieved some recognition of the disproportionate impacts felt here. These include the deep social consequences of leaving many of us to fend for ourselves. “Kindness” in the government’s approach to Covid has evaporated. The Minister of Tourism and Small Business beams a message that more businesses must fail. A minority of Kiwis took glee in running us down and applauding the loss of livelihoods here.

Many of us have stood up to defend this town. But despite his calls for partnership with tourism business, Minister Nash refused both the Mayor and the local community’s requests for community-level engagement last week. Instead the Minister sheltered in an invitation only seminar that Otago University refused to open to tourism SMEs actively campaigning for our district. ACT’s David Seymour and James McDowall have met with us and pledged to assist. Local MP Joseph Mooney has engaged and National’s leadership in Wellington is at last drawing attention to the unsustainability of the current trajectory. We need political weight in Wellington to move this government on from hand wringing and vague hints of a plan to actually deliver a tangible targeted support package to help us get to the reopening of the border to green zone countries, not just Australia. Our best course of action remains community solidarity, pulling in the same direction to prevent more damage to this town. Thankfully we have a broad spectrum of people willing to stand up. It is vital to support them to achieve the results we are seeking. Together we can succeed. Nik Kiddle

Injured passenger discharged as investigations launched into jet boat crash
A passenger injured in a jet boat crash on Queenstown’s Shotover River has been released from hospital. The man was discharged yesterday afternoon after being kept in Queenstown’s Lakes District Hospital overnight for observation following Sunday’s incident. $2

The crash happened at about 11.40am on Sunday, on a stretch of the river upstream from the Shotover SH6 road bridge, close to Tucker Beach Road. The senior driver involved in the incident has been employed by KJet since 2014 and has logged over 1000 driving hours, a company spokesperson says. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission, Maritime New Zealand and the jet boat company itself are all investigating the incident. “KJet voluntarily suspended operations on Sunday, while it investigated the incident and worked with relevant authorities,” a company spokesperson says. KJet has since been cleared by Maritime New Zealand to resume jet boat operations and conducted a number of trips yesterday. “As always, KJet prioritises the health and safety of its passengers and drivers. As such it is continuing to fully support the passengers on yesterday’s trip and their family and friends, as well as the driver involved in the incident.” No detailed information about the passenger’s injuries is available for privacy reasons. St John Ambulance on Sunday told media the man was seriously injured, while those helicoptered to hospital were also injured, and the remaining passengers on the jet boat were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Ten reasons why we love to farm By Bernadette Hunt, Vice-President Federated Farmers Southland
In the face of constant news about all the challenges farmers face, I’ve been asked several times lately why farmers do what we do. So this morning, as I walked up and down the tractor lines of an oats paddock looking for weeds (one of arable farming’s more mind-numbing tasks), I gave it some thought. Lots of things we love most about farming can also be the most challenging. Not much different to other pursuits, I guess. Some people love going to the gym. I doubt they love every minute as they sweat it out – but the feeling of satisfaction at the end makes it worthwhile.

So with that in mind, here’s my list of ten reasons we love farming:

Otago Regional Council is proposing a general rates increase of 73% for 21/22, as it bumps its operating budget up by $20 million.

Satisfaction – nothing worth having comes easy, but the satisfaction from persevering and making things work when the going gets tough is a pretty awesome feeling. 6. Great way to bring up kids – our kids get awesome opportunities and experiences, they know the satisfaction that comes from putting effort into something over a long period of time, and they see struggles and triumphs up close – all setting them up to be adults who will go places. 7. The awesome rural community – the vast majority of people we rub shoulders with are salt of the earth good sorts who make us proud to be farmers too. 8. Brains and brawn – the combination of skills required to successfully run a farming business puts every organ in the body to good use, including (and most importantly) the brain. Shifting constantly between strategic and physical work means life is never dull. 9. Team work – we love combining our strengths as a couple to make our business work, but also utilizing and developing the strengths of our staff and the specialists we rely on. 10. The seasonal cycle – the lessons of this season will feed into the things we do next season, so there is always another opportunity to improve and do it better next time. I am sure every farmer you ask could add to this list. I hope it gives a bit of insight into what makes us tick, as well as being a wee reminder of the positives for any farmer out there who needs it.
For someone with a $900,000 property in the Wakatipu Basin, that will mean paying about $78 more, for a general rate of $185. But the total amount paid will be much higher, as the overall bill also includes targeted rates for transport, river management and other services. They’re also set to increase, if the ORC’s preferred funding options for its Long-Term Plan (10 years) are approved. And for residents living around Lake Hayes and in nearby Lakes Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, there’s a new targeted rate planned to cover the lake’s rehabilitation. The 290 residents living close to the lake will pay a whopping $335 extra per year under the proposal, just for the lake rehab. That could see some residents’ total ORC rates bills more than triple. For homeowners in Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, the Lake Hayes rehab bill will be $45 per year, while those across the wider Queenstown will pay $2. A report will go before ORC councillors, sitting in Oamaru next week. Otago Regional Council Chair Andrew Noone says: “The [overall] proposal includes what we recognise is a hefty rates increase in year one, with smaller increases in the following years. “In dollar terms, the proposed general rates rise for an average household is an increase of $80, or just over $1.50 per week. “Otago has historically had some of the lowest rates in the country. That is no longer sustainable with the work programme expected from us by our community and government. “It’s important to remember that these are still proposed figures for a draft plan, and there will be opportunities for the community to have their say on the LTP through a consultation starting in April.” ORC hopes to spend $97 million next year - on the environment, safety & resilience, transport and regional leadership - up from $77m. By the end of the plan, in 2031, it proposes to be spending $132m. For next year, it intends to increase its environment budget by $9.8m, from $15.5m to $25.4m. The regional leadership budget will increase by $4.8m, from $16.7m to $21.6. Transport is bumped $3.6m, from $28.8m to $32.4, while safety & resilience increases by $1.3m, from $16.1m to $17.5m. The increases then continue, by various amounts, year by year, over the course of the Long-Term Plan to 2030/31. The total rates increase comprises general rates increases of 73.2%, 15.7% and 6.8%, and targeted rates increases of 29.3%, 18.2% and 14.2% in years 1 to 3 respectively. It would mean increasing total rates immediately in year 1 (47.5%) with smaller increases in years 2 (17.0%) and 3 (10.6%), before maintaining rates with minimal increases thereafter (an average of 3.5%).

We have around 64,000 thoughts per day and thoughts become things, everything starts with a thought, so if you change your thoughts then you can change your outcomes, change your reality, change your life. When you catch then, stop and say I can change this, these are my thoughts and I have the power to think differently. 3. What would you rather think, after all they are just thoughts and you are in control.

When you get to my age, you don’t get many romantic texts from young men, so I was pretty excited to get one from Jon Mitchell. He ran a great campaign for the election, and even though he nearly won this electorate, the dyed in the wool National voters JUST managed to get whatever the National candidate’s name is, into being our representative. Has anyone met our MP? I can’t help thinking we might be getting considerably more attention from the government if we had Jon Mitchell instead. Back to the text - luckily, I didn’t respond in the same romantic vein, and suggested he’d meant it for someone else. And he had. His lucky, lucky wife!! This lucky wife (me)) had a blissful husband free weekend as he zipped up to Auckland to watch the yacht racing. My sister and her family, incarcerated in the Crowne Plaza in MIQ were chatting to him on the phone, and discovered they could see him standing at the window in his undies in the hotel opposite. Probably not the best view of Auckland… Sounds as if it was a fabulous atmosphere at the America’s Cup, and I was so happy to see my friend’s son Rufus Henry on TV a LOT. He’s got Down’s Syndrome and is the most enthusiastic person on the planet. Everyone watching him beam with pride that his brother, Finn had been the grinder, couldn’t stop grinning. I’ve been grinning too at all the positive feedback on the idea of Australian flights arriving in the South Island. Auckland has a denser population (in both senses of the word) and it makes perfect sense for Australians to be able to fly here without quarantine as long as they’ve tested negative. The government’s angst about tourists overwhelming the system could be easily countered by restricting the number of flights in and out of Dunedin, Christchurch and Queenstown airports. How could it be easier? I know Tourism NZ is making an ad about a 30 year old Australian man coming to NZ, so I hope this means they are actually planning to make it happen. Even as I write this, it seems the govt is suddenly saying they ARE going to try and make the bubble happen in April. Fingers crossed very very tightly indeed. And that Australian flights might come into Christchurch airport. Will wonders never cease? Will they suddenly tell us (and the medical centres) when vaccines actually are going to start happening in the South Island? The speedspeaker Anne O’Brien from the Auckland Writers Festival was down here to talk to keen readers about the programme for this year - you can read it online and it’s hard to imagine anyone unable to find something that interests them. My bookclub are all heading up there for it and our biggest problem is trying to work out which shows NOT to see. Ai Wei Wei? A Donmar Warehouse production called BLINDNESS about a pandemic (written well before COVID), our own stars like Witi Ihimaera and Vincent O’Sullivan and so much more. I can’t keep up with all the wonderful things happening - I was only in Wanaka last week admiring the cowwash (beauty salon for prize winning cattle) and the heavenly hydrangea that won first prize, and came home to watch “Nomadland” which is tipped to be number one in the Oscars, then got a sneak preview of Rosie Bristed’s opening of Holly Zandbergen’s luscious work. Now I’m off to Dunedin with all my teenage friends, who like me, have turned into sixty year olds in the blink of an eye. It’s our school reunion - I’m just sad that none of our friends living overseas will be there, but it’s pretty likely we’re still going to have a very overexcited get together.

Arts News Queenstown Adventure Film Festival
Named for the year Mount Aspiring National Park was founded, 1964 is a quarterly print and digital magazine based in Wanaka. 1964 writes about our country’s remote places and the people who seek them out. They render New Zealand’s landscapes in closeup, not in wide-angle. They hunt outdoor adventure for the awe and the challenge in it, but also for the creativity, psychology and eccentricity. They look for the comedy in it too. The stories in 1964 are not ones you’ve heard before, because, like a good punchline, the best things in life are sometimes hard to find. 1964 has been going for more than a year, and they are thrilled with the response to the magazine. Now, more than ever, people love print! Issue 5 is out now and features; a look at Otago’s Interplanetary Cycle Trail, a take on the topic of mirror spiders (which are a thing and there are photos to prove it), plus check out Wanaka’s YAMI music summit, Sock World in Hokitika, mountain pilots, campgrounddwelling penguins, mystery petrels and the heart-wrenching story of Bingo the dog. The first-ever Queenstown Adventure Film Festival was held recently to a sold-out show with 130 attendees at Coronet Peak. The event was created to celebrate New Zealand filmmakers from amateurs to professionals and the adventure activities that exist here. The films celebrated mountain biking, winter sports, climbing, tramping, packrafting, and any other adventure sport you can think of. All were between 2 to 10 minutes and featured only New Zealand locations. There were three winners for independent films. Best Independent Film: Going Home by Ashley Williams. Runner Up Best Independent Film: The Dusky Track by Nick Kowalski Honourable Mention Best Independent Category: Grey Matter by Isaac Buckley The winner of the media category was determined by crowd vote. Storyworks won with their film Ski for Trees.

Remember Lockdown 2020?
It’s crazy to comprehend, that the first anniversary of our nation’s lockdown is almost upon us. On March 25th, 2020, Level 4 was actioned enforcing all citizens of New Zealand to stay home for the safety of themselves and others. The Covid-19 home quarantine episode was a bizarre reality event that would go down in the history books. Everyone has a story to tell. For photographer, Toni Caldwell, she was blissfully unaware that she would be the one documenting this historic moment for Queenstown. “I took these photos for the kids” she confessed. She had the rare opportunity to observe the township completely abandoned. “Queenstown with zero people... a lot of people didn’t get to see that”. With her youngest son being an essential worker at Countdown, Toni felt the obligation to drive him in for his shifts. She took the drive back home to Arthurs Point, stopping at sites to capture apocalyptic scenes with an invading click. “I passed very few cars… 1 police car in the whole 5 weeks”. Enforcement did stop her activities once, but, to Toni’s surprise, they signalled a thumbs up for her to proceed with her work. “I felt very lonely taking those photos... It was empty. It wasn’t a nice feeling”.
Over 3-4 mornings she took 800 photos, processing them in a moody black and white. When two friends saw her images, they encouraged Toni to put them in a book. “Lakes District Museum came on board wanting to launch the book before it was published!” she said excitedly. She launched “Lockdown Wakatipu” late last year and was ‘blown away’ by the support. “I had emails from readers saying that they cried”. To mark the historic event of the 2020 lockdown, Toni will be speaking about her book once more at the Queenstown Library on the 25th of March (a year to the day that lockdown began). “It’s about local Queenstowners having a record of this bizarre time” says Toni. Her association with Lockdown doesn’t stop there, she’s in the process of creating and self-publishing a new book profiling various stories from locals “There’s so many different stories, good, inspirational, and sad”.
