Why upgrade our streetscape now? There’s been quite a lot of comment lately about the timing of the work currently underway to upgrade our streetscapes. There are those who are saying that business is tough enough at the present time without digging up the streets. Let me explain the reasoning behind this. Firstly, Council has consulted widely on the Queenstown Town Centre Transformation. It was work the community deemed vital for the sustainability of CBD businesses as well as our overall attractiveness for locals and as a destination. The work will transform the Queenstown Town Centre into a more inviting, family friendly and accessible space and will feature improved walking and cycling facilities providing a continuous link from the Queenstown Gardens to the Gondola. Our community, notably including the business community, wants this work done. Doing it at a time when business is generally quiet makes for less disruption and faster timeframes to complete the work, thereby shortening any disruption. Secondly, we need to remember where much of the money is coming from to pay for these works. Council successfully negotiated with Central Government under the ‘Shovel Ready’ program to get $35M towards this project, money which otherwise would have had to be drawn from local ratepayers. The availability of this money clearly makes this an opportunity too good to miss and a great deal of the eligibility criteria was focused on projects that were ready to go. Finally, an undertaking has been made by the project directors to wherever possible use local sub-contractors and to support economic development through the creation of opportunities in the local job market. So while many of the benefits for businesses in the CBD will be delivered in the medium term, there are businesses benefitting right now who have a steady work stream and whom are hiring local people. I sympathise greatly with those businesses presently frustrated by the works, and by a lack of customers. Rest assured, Council will do its absolute best, working with our contracting team, to get this work done quickly, efficiently and with the least impact on local business possible. The outcome will be a high quality, accessible and attractive town centre that functions efficiently and effectively for our residents and visitors. Mayor Jim Boult

Last Monday, a passenger on Air New Zealand flight NZ611 from Auckland became ill with “mild flu-like symptoms”. The person was taken from the plane to Lakes District Hospital by ambulance and tested for Covid-19. It’s understood the other passengers were allowed to disembark as normal.

Ministry of Health officials were able to confirm within hours that the person had tested negative for the virus. Both Queenstown Airport and Air New Zealand spokespeople urged people who are sick not to travel. Sara Irvine, Queenstown Airport general manager corporate & community affairs, said: “We would like to remind the community to please stay home if you are unwell. “If you or someone you are travelling with is not feeling well, please do not travel and please do not enter the terminal.” That advice remains in place, despite Sunday’s downgrading of alert levels, which sees Auckland at level 2 and the rest of NZ at level 1. People are allowed to travel inter-regionally under alert level 3 for business and work reasons, and some personal reasons such as moving house or health appointments. But the lines can be blurry. Some 9000 Aucklanders left the city approaching lockdown, including Destiny Church leaders Brian and Hannah Tamaki, who headed for Te Anau. They were told they were not welcome by Southland mayor Gary Tong. They then reportedly travelled on to Queenstown over the weekend to hold a service, after authorities in Invercargill told them they couldn’t use the city’s venue. The alert level downgrades followed six consecutive days without a new community case. That’s good news for the organisers of the Wanaka A&P show, which last year became an unwitting vector for Covid-19 after people from the World Hereford Conference cluster in Queenstown attended. Rather than cancel this year, Wanaka A&P event manager Jane Stalker says the not-for-profit organising committee emailed trade exhibitors, sponsors and funders last week asking whether they’d pledge their site fees and donations and waive their right to a refund, if the event was unable to go ahead. They agreed and their gamble has paid off. The 84th Wanaka A&P Show will take place this Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, from 8am-5pm, with more than 40,000 people expected to attend.

Arts+Culture That alien shape on the lakefront… By Bethany G. Rogers

You may have noticed a curious shape lighting up Queenstown’s lakefront of late. HYBOCOZO’s ‘Deep Thought’ will remain on Marine Parade for another couple of weeks. The art installation was brought here by Kiwi art facilitator Anthony Van Dorsten, who met the artists at the infamous Burning Man festival in Nevada’s Black Rock desert.

After their popularity at Burning Man, HYBOCOZO started creating public artworks. The Deep Thought model was one of the largest they’d created at the time, and the first where people could climb inside, so that they too get the unique, immersive perspective the artists felt while creating it. It’s this immersion and interaction with art that most excites them and Yelena says she’s loved watching people interact with the pieces.

“Anthony has been instrumental in our ability to bring this to New Zealand. New Zealand is quite far away from us, so it just wasn’t viable to bring our art there,” says California-based Yelena Filipchuk (who’s one-half of HYBOCOZO, the other half being her husband, Serge Beaulieu).

“I love that about public art – it’s significant. It becomes part of the tapestry of the town, it creates a conversation with the town. With a temporary structure, you can see how your town has evolved – you see the built environment as something malleable. It is there and then it is not.

“We met Anthony at Burning Man in 2015, and we have a great connection with him. He took us on and we said: are you sure? You have a family, art is a risky business! But he said he had a feeling and that he wanted to do it. And he has done an amazing job.”

“I love watching young and old interact with it, counting its many sides.”

Anthony’s worked with local councils and art groups (like Queenstown’s Arts Trust and QLDC) to take the piece around New Zealand – it’s already been to Wanaka and it will keep travelling country after it leaves Queenstown. The large lesser triambic icosahedron is a replica of an artwork that’s currently held by The Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum and research complex, in the USA. It’s part of a series of works which – Douglas Adams fans will not be surprised to learn – are in part inspired by the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy books. The comedic science fiction series starts with the end of the world, which is deliberately destroyed to make way for an intergalactic bypass. Yelena explains: “[Serge and I] wanted to create art together and I was re-reading the book at the time. The hyperspace bypass construction site feels really relevant right now. Just like in the book, the signs are all there and we’ve been served our notice about climate change... Climate change is a catastrophe that’s coming at us in slow motion. And this got us thinking about what the world would look like if the world was visited by aliens in the future and we weren’t here anymore. “So we started by creating shapes that an alien would recognise. Shapes that exist because maths and physics is a constant – these shapes are everywhere in nature. We started creating galactic pylons and that was the origins of this series.”

Music festival backed by grant-funding

A classical music festival in Queenstown and a training programme for rescue chopper crew have both been supported in the latest round of Central Lakes Trust Grants. The Wakatipu Music Festival was granted $20,000. The festival, aimed at NZ-based musicians, is an initiative to replace the Michael Hill International Violin Competition. Anne Rodda, executive director of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition Charitable Trust, says: “Cvoid-19 has meant that the 20th anniversary edition of the violin competition is cancelled. “However, to support the affected stakeholders, particularly in Queenstown, presenting a new project will partially fill the void of opportunity and activity caused by the cancellation of the international event and allow us to get to know the local music scene much better.”

It will take place in June 4-7, the same weekend as the Luma light festival. The music festival features performances from celebrated musicians including Jonathan Cohen, principal clarinet with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, soprano Anna Leese and pianist Stephen DePledge. There’ll also be a focus on young artists, with 12 NZ music talents ages 16-26 invited for coaching, rehearsals and performances to build their professional skills. Each Young Artist will also play a 30-minute public performance that is professionally recorded for the young artist’s future use (eg auditions, profile-building, etc.) and broadcast by RNZC with syndication to international media outlet The Violin Channel.

Local music students, performers and teachers will have the opportunity to attend workshops, masterclasses and receive professional development coaching provided by the Festival’s artists. It’s also supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council, Three Lakes Cultural Trust, Turn Up The Music Charitable Trust and private donors. Tickets on sale from April. Meanwhile, the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust (LDART) has been granted a whopping $200,000 for its 2021 air rescue training programme.

LDART supports the Otago Rescue Helicopter based in Queenstown and Dunedin, which last month alone flew more than 160 missions They included rescue missions to help climbers stuck on Mt Earnslaw, a swimmer in difficulty in the Kawarau River near Gibbston, and people injured in accidents on Queenstown’s roads and trails, as well as maternity and medical transfers from Lakes District Hospital.

At 6am, Sunday, March 7, the country, with the exception of Auckland, returned to Level 1. And that definitely means the green flag at 4pm this Saturday, March 13 for thundering V8 engines, roaring exhausts and adrenalin-pumping action at one of the most important meetings on the Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway calendar. The Daryl Ainsley Memorial Meeting is an opportunity to pay respects and celebrate the man who contributed so much to Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway. Tragically, an accident took Daryl’s life on May 12, 2018 at age 52.

My little bubble of happiness at the thought my son might be on the April 2nd no quarantine flight from Sydney has been popped - they cancelled the flight this week. I’ve got 3 children working abroad in three different countries and like so many others, I’m desperate to see them. I keep seeing the Transtasman bubble floating out of reach all the time and wish I could catch it and tie it down. Luckily, it seems my sister and her family’s flight from London is still happening next week. She’s hoping NZ doesn’t follow the Chinese example and start doing anal Covid tests - now that’s an exciting way to greet your visitors!!! Other friends who’ve arrived in NZ find it really confronting when they get out of quarantine and see people WITHOUT MASKS, or HUGGING and as for seeing a whole group of people doing something as dangerous as watching a movie or getting in a car TOGETHER.... So lucky us having had the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra at the Memorial Hall on Saturday night - several hundred of us all having a riproaring night of music together with the cellphone siren alerting us to the new lockdown conditions. The concert had already been postponed several times, and if it had been a day later, it would have been stopped once more. The Lakes District Museum has a fascinating exhibition on at the moment - it’s called “Foundations” and it’s old handdrawn and coloured survey maps of the Wakatipu along with some terrific old photos. It’s only on till April 18th so hurry along.

As I write this, it seems the Wanaka Show is still going ahead on March 12 and 13. It really is a great event - much bigger than our little Lake Hayes one (ours is prettier, of course) and a lot more agricultural. Having said that, whenever I admire some clothing or a bit of kitchen kit or whatever, the response is quite often “I got it at the Wanaka Show” , so it seems a lot of traders do good business over there. Nothing like a bit of retail therapy after a busy few hours looking at stud goats and highly polished home grown vegetables. And don’t miss the Jack Russell stampede - it’s the funniest race ever with those perky little dogs misunderstanding their owners’ instructions and doing a lot more bumsniffing than running in the right direction. Autumn mornings have arrived early and heading out without a jersey makes for a very goosebumpy start to the day. The mulberry season has started- honestly, is there a more delicious fruit in the whole world? They are never in the supermarkets as they are far too fragile and juicy to transport. Picking them sour and firm would destroy all the yumminess - it’s why supermarket fruit mostly tastes of nothing. So much more delicious to eat fruit that’s been ripened on the tree. On that note, I’d love to see more fruit trees being planted on the cycle trails so that happy hikers and bikers could forage on the way. AND fruit trees do that helpful thing of shedding their leaves in winter so that more sun reaches the trails. No need for sun last weekend - we biked along the Hawea River past the kayaking/surfing rapids - so much fun to stop and watch them - all the way up to the Lake Hawea campsite. And back. Going back was very hot and uncomfortable - it took me ages to work out that the great discomfort in my nether regions was caused by the seat on my bike having decided to go vertical instead of the much comfier normal horizontal, and I was unable to reset it. Even the simplest technology seems to be too tricky for me. Is it too late to learn?

UNPOPULAR FOOD OPINIONS... Recently returned to town after working away for half a year. One of the things I’d missed the most was Queenstown’s variety of restaurants (pickings a bit slim in usual small towns). Imagine what a bummer to come home and get several disappointing meals in a row. Overcooked or undercooked meat, stuff still cold in the middle, watery salads, obviously reheated side dishes with visible skin on soup etc, everything underseasoned or completely lacking sauces/condiments/spices. And this is at restaurants I used to love. Places where even an average meal was better than most in NZ! Don’t know if all the immigrant chefs went home or if owners are trying to cut corners with cheaper ingredients or people just don’t care, but it certainly feels like places have stopped putting in the effort now that there aren’t any international tourists coming through. But despite the smaller plates of worse food, nobody’s been kind enough to drop their prices. I’m a restaurant vet myself so I won’t be leaving specific bad reviews because I know how hard it is, especially in the current climate, but it sucks to feel like places think domestic customers aren’t worth the effort. I don’t expect anyone to roll out the red carpet just because I’m back in town, but the drop in quality was noticeable, and it’s tough to justify the spend if standards have dropped that low. ROAD CONE REPRODUCTION IS ON STEROIDS While the Mayor, Council and Government can talk the talk and expend hundreds of millions of taxpayer and ratepayer funds on public transport and supporting infrastructure. The simple fact of matter is that in Queenstown the current or projected usage of public transport facilities do not stack up to the projected expenditure and no doubt the ratepayers will be left with picking up the operating cost for many years into the future. In regard to the CBD developments, is this really to benefit Queenstowners or is it co-operative effort between the mayor , councilors at the behest of the big end of town to further enhance their current and future developments. It’s no use to look to the consultants reports to facilitate this expenditure. As we know by now those that engage and complete these, have predetermined agendas provided to them, which provides little credence to their efforts.

THE DIMINISH OF Q’TOWN We sit here whinging about lack of tourists, yet were doing the bare minimum to keep the town up to a good standard in both service and visual esthetics. Six months ago I visited a local bar and struggled to open the toilet door, clearly broken and unhinged. Fast forward to today and the same door still clearly an issue. Let’s try and keep Queenstown to a standard we all know it should be at, especially when we are grasping at people to come in and spend money.

TRAVEL SOUTHERN WEST COAST On a fine day, the southern end of the West Coast or Glacier Coast as they call it is one of New Zealand’s highlights. Its beautiful, untouched and currently very quiet. As a kiwi who has seen the world I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never visited Westland until now and I’m a convert. Admittedly we were blessed with the weather but given how close it really is to Queenstown it is completely do-able for a last minute weekend trip. Where else in the world, do you get dense forest, glaciers, wild beaches, sweeping scenery stunning galleries, great cafes, stunning coffee all in one area. Aside Quueenstown of course! Traversing Haast Pass sets the scene for what’s instore, just be aware that there is significant roadworks and traffic lights that is likely to slow things down. The pass itself is a pretty good road these days and with the Aspiring National Park encroaching either side its already a very different landscape to Queenstown. South Westland is completely undeveloped and undisturbed with anything but the birds. If you are impacted at all by sandfly’s have a fresh can of heavy duty insect repellant handy at all times. The insects are just waiting to attack and are remorseless for those of us that these little critters love to target.

Fox - Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson IS indeed a must see on a clear day. The lake walk is 4.4km of easy relatively flat path. There are a couple of inclines but nothing difficult. There are plenty of viewing points and on a nice still morning the reflections in the lake are stunning. Its recommended to go early or go late for the best light. If the view of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman is clear, go immediately, because the weather can change quickly. Within 15 minutes of our walk finishing and enjoying our well deserved post walk coffee the weather had closed in and that was it for the day, despite the weather at Fox being sunny all day.

Franz Joseph – Rowi Kiwi Conservation The place looks a bit corny but a visit to the Wild Life Centre brings you up close and personal to the Rowi Kiwi and Tuatara. Initial impressions, it looks almost like a tourist shop rather than a wild life centre but ignore the disconnect. Once you are in the darkened habitat out the back, its terrific. Rowi are NZ’s rarest kiwi with only 600 in the wild and most live in the Franz Joseph region and its feathers are very different to its cousins. At the center they raise the young from hatching to being re-released into the wild when that can fend and defend themselves. The wild life center had two young ones almost ready to head into the wild and another two in the hatchery when we were there. In a typical year between 30 and 60 kiwi are reared at the center. Check out deals online as you can get some decent bargains that aren’t available at the center. I know weird.

Hokitika Gorge

33km to the east of Hokitika is the gorge. Its 2km loop predominantly on a boardwalk. The main attraction is both the gorge and the colour of the water. Its aqua blue and completely clear. Plenty of fish to see but swimming is a no-no due to the freezing temperature and speed of the current. Remember those sandflies, they like this area so take some insect repellant. Hokitika itself is the surprise package. Its permanent population is small and like many small towns is struggling long term. Hokitika however looks way more loved than its bigger center further north. All the historical buildings have either been done up or are in the process of it, there are a plethora of galleries and some particularly good once check out Wilderness Gallery as an example. https://juergenschacke.photoshelter.com/

Perhaps one of the West Coast well known spots, Lake Matheson Café is an eatery that’s simple and nice and it works beautifully. The café has been serving up consistently good fare for years and as a result has a well derived reputation. If you don’t want to do the helicopter take the walk to the Fox Glacier. The road was knocked out last year and now its either walk it or hire a bike. It’s an easy 2hr return trip. Most people wont need 2 hours. Also I recommend the Moraine walk detour[ 20 mins off the main path] …. It’s a narrow wellformed path that winds through the trees and follows an old glacier valley from hundreds of years ago.

For a drink with a view, sit out on the deck and take in the ocean rolling onto the beach and watch the sun set. Enter from the beach as you can avoid traipsing through the hotel.

West Coast Tree Tops Walk

Approximately 20 minutes south of Hokitika you will find the West Coast Tree Tops Walk. An exhilarating treetop walk above the canopy of the forest among temperate rainforest giants. Its pitched as an glimpse of life with the birds, high in the ancient Rimu and Kamahi tree canopy. After a walk to the start, it’s a gentle incline along a steel platform 20 metres above the forest floor and travels over 450 metres long as well as a tower to climb for even greater view if you are keen. If you are not comfortable with heights, the walk is completely safe, it may not be for everyone.
