Guilty as charged I must admit to the crime of being a bit negative of late. I know why I have this this less-than-ideal mindset. I have a family to support, a couple of dozen employees across multiple Wakatipu based businesses. One of which was brand new in the year of Covid 2020. All these businesses are struggling. No surprises there. But nothing changes the fact, a negative attitude is not going to turn a global pandemic around. So, let me flip it around and look on the bright side of life. A normal working week for me is 7 days, 8am to whenever it ends. Being self-employed is like the endless split shift. From one thing to the next, break, the next thing, to the next, break, home, dinner with wife and kids, bath, bed (for the kids) then to the home office to tidy that day away. Repeat the hamster wheel tomorrow. The bright side is, I now work 6 days a week. Sometimes only 5. Sometimes only 8 hours a day. No point banging my head against a wall when the usual complications of a busy business have gone along with half our trade. So on Saturday I went and played golf for the 3rd time since Covid hit, with a couple of mates on a stunning Central Otago day. I even won the beers (they must be really bad at golf) and then had a sleepy afternoon in the hammock reminiscing about that birdy on the 14th. One of my playing partners is an English born Kiwi. His Mum back in the UK just got the vaccine injection. But his grandma died. She was 95. A good innings and it took this virus to tip her over. That’s the tragic reality outside of these islands. I could complain that our Government seem to think a roll out of 12,000 vaccines to essential workers is a big achievement. Our leader thinks small. That is ok, baby steps. Good on her. It is only hospitality and tourism going bust. That is ok, no rush. The rest of NZ is doing just fine. And the government is of course charged with looking after the majority first. Fair play. It is my problem I am in hospitality, not hers. But we will survive. Stay positive. Do our bit for the team of 5 million. Be kind and take the financial hit. Keep playing golf, work less, enjoy life and buy a NZSki seasons pass. Life is good here. Playing golf on late summer days and thinking about skiing on the best little ski field in the southern hemisphere, just 15 minutes from my house. Coronet Peak. Bring on winter. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has ruled out a targeted wage subsidy for businesses in communities dependent on tourism, says Queenstown’s mayor. Lakes district mayor Jim Boult held an online meeting with the PM and Tourism Minister Stuart Nash last Tuesday.

Boult says he outlined many of the challenges and struggles faced by communities across the country who are heavily reliant on tourism, and the visitor and accommodation sectors. But, short of another lockdown, they confirmed they won’t use public money to support those businesses directly through another wage subsidy. “Yes, this is disappointing news and I am sure it will be a bitter pill for those who may have been holding out for that as a lifeline,” Boult says. “However, I appreciate the frank discussion with the Prime Minister and the clarity she provided. Personally, I will continue to work assiduously for our community on this matter.” Many business owners in Queenstown, Fiordland, the West Coast and elsewhere have been lobbying the Government for more assistance.

COMMUNITY NOTES Charity Hurling: Queenstown Band Of Brothers raising funds for Wakatipu St John Ambulance Every year since its inception the annual Charity Hurling match keeps getting bigger and bigger. Held each year, the Queenstown team (Band of Brothers) hosts the match with teams from Christchurch and Wellington travelling down to what can only be described as the biggest game of the year held here in Queenstown!! Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient Irish origin, and generally played by men. It shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals and the number of players, and much terminology. The objective of the game is for players to use a wooden (ash) stick called a hurley to hit a small ball called a sliotar between the opponents’ goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. No protective padding is worn by players and played on grass it’s a very fast paced hard hitting skill-full game. Three years ago Christchurch came down and beat Queenstown in the first ever game but 2019 was a different story were the Queenstown boys took the victory. Last year the match was cancelled due to Covid19 so this year Christchurch will be coming with vengeance but Queenstown’s Band of Brothers is waiting!!! To make things a little spicier there is a new trophy called the Lindis Pass up for grabs!! All the money raised will go to St Johns With an expected massive crowd there is the Irish national anthem played by a Irish band and hopefully the Hakka preformed by the teams. The team at St. John’s do a fantastic job year in and year out and it’s why these boys take the field to show there support towards these important charities every year. Funding News Are you a community group or a not-for-profit looking for funding? Representatives from Central Lakes Trust, DIA, and Southern Trust, with Community Trust South and QLDC have launched a series of funding clinics. “Each clinic involves connecting people and organisations. It is about sharing knowledge and networks, providing advice where they can, and generally making it easy for people to ask for help.” Mat Begg of Central Lakes Trust says each agency has different funding priorities. “Coming along means you can find out what each agency funds. What one agency may not fund, another could…, these clinics can bring groups together to collaborate and share ideas on how to meet that need”. Arts+Culture New event a barrel of fun for artists

A new case of the blues

Wine barrels are a central part of a brand new event at this year’s Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival.

The first new shade of blue in two centuries hit the shelves this month.

Now in its 36th year, the festival has long delighted locals with a huge range of quirky and fun events for all the family. From performances by the Buckingham Belles to the Ray White Art Exhibition, there’s plenty to entice art lovers at this year’s festival.

YInMn, also known as Oregon Blue or Mas Blue is a vibrant, nearperfect shade of blue that was accidentally discovered by Professor Mas Subramanian and his then graduate student, Andrew E. Smith, at Oregon State University in 2009. The pair were working on a project exploring novel materials for electronics when one experiment resulted in a vibrant blue material.

A new event this year will see a display of wine barrels transformed into art by local artists. “Our festival sponsor, Akarua, have kindly given us wine barrels to give to artists who wish to partake,” explains festival organiser Carole Watts. “The artists can create whatever they want on the barrel. They’ll then be displayed during the festival and sold by silent auction, with some of the proceeds going towards the festival and the rest going to community charities.

The inorganic pigment is made by heating the oxides of yttrium, indium and manganese to about 1,200 °C. It’s said to be more durable than other blue pigments like ultramarine because it retains its colour in oil and water and it’s better for mixing with other colours. YInMn Blue strongly reflects infrared radiation, which means it could be used for energy-saving, cool coatings. Blue is mankind’s oldest created pigment, but there hasn’t been a new blue available commercially for 200 years. This means it’s in high demand and selling for prices that could leave you YInMn Blue in the face.

“The artists are really excited and I can’t wait to see what they create.” There’s eight local artists involved so far, including Jenny Mehrtens, Charlotte Graf, Trey Ratcliff and Jane Litten. Artist Jane Litten wouldn’t reveal her plans for her wine barrel (“it’s a surprise”) but says the idea is a “quirky” one. “I like quirky ideas and this is one that allows me to repurpose a second hand barrel made of beautiful oak into an unexpected household object that remains humorously attached to the initial use and object.” Unsurprisingly, this will be the first time she’s done wine barrel art. “I’ve never done anything like a barrel before. I’ve done pointe ballet shoes into swans and a concrete gnome into a snow globe for Luma (he became a Magritte-themed gnome) a couple of years ago. I love the opportunity to give back to my community in a creative way and enjoy the opportunity to explore alternative creative methods away from my normal (painting/ two-dimensional) artistic practice.”

Police have slammed the “stupidity” of Queenstown drivers after catching 45 using their mobile phones or not wearing a seat belt. Officers conducted a two-day operation last week, issuing infringement notices to everyone they caught. Sergeant Matt Hargreaves says many of the fatal or serious injury crashes in New Zealand involve distracted drivers. “Using a mobile phone that is not hands-free means you are not paying attention,” he says.

Gardening with Dr Compost Late summer planting Words Ben Elms

As crops complete and space becomes free, it’s an opportunity to grow more goodness. We’re rolling the dice with what weather autumn gives us, but with hoops and frost cloth we can ﬁght back and extend this growing time. Start by chucking a wee bit of compost over the bed. If you’re planting heavy feeders like broccoli and cabbage, mix two generous handfuls of compost in the hole before planting. Leave old veggie roots in the bed to rot down; this adds carbon, food for microbes and air pathways (but you will have to remove it completely if the plant was diseased). So, what can we sneak in?

1. Late tasty tatties! One Indian summer, I planted potatoes as late as March and harvested them in May.

2. My favourite: leafy cut-andgrow-again greens. Use your frost cloth to keep this crop cooler on hot days.

5. Radishes. Japanese daikons aren’t as hot, they grow big and are a beautiful addition to any salad.

3. Plant a crop of tasty cabbages ready for a winter of sauerkraut goodness!

6. There’s just enough time for some bush beans. Don’t devote a whole bed, pop them in and around your cabbages, in the pumpkin patch, or even in a ﬂower bed. Lettuces are also great for popping in these unused spaces.

4. If you don’t know what to plant, plant broad beans. If you need the space later on, they make for a great ‘green manure nitrogen ﬁxing crop’ that you can chop back into the soil.

7. Brilliant purple sprouting broccoli – if it’s not in your garden already, plant/ sow one today. These goodies, with a few handfuls of compost added on the side once a month, can keep going all winter long.

Keep popping in plants or seeds wherever you have space each week to make the most of any good weather and you’ll (hopefully) keep the bounty running long into the winter.

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

It’s been a hard week for many it seems, I have connected with so many people, family, friends and clients and this was the resounding feedback. “Glad that week is done, it’s been a tough one.”

I’m having the greatest difficulty concentrating on writing this column as a friend has sent me an 1895 English book called “Ladies’ Guide in Health and Disease - Girlhood, Maidenhood, Wifehood and Motherhood”. Its 673 pages are full of marvellous facts (Donald Trump variety facts)that have had me howling with laughter.

In NZ we have it pretty good, we live normally, we might be missing our travel, our people, our adventures, all things considered though, we’ve got it better than most. We know the rest of the world’s landscape is very different, lockdown, isolation, over it. How do you keep connected and help those who are less fortunate than us? It’s simple, we need to connect and share good things with them, lift them, inspire them, let them know what you really think about them. Now is the time. When we were living life pre-covid we would have been with our people, shared real time, in person hugs and connection, so now more than ever we need to connect virtually differently and here’s why. People are missing you. They are missing their old life. They are frightened about what the future holds. It’s like groundhog day. Here’s what I have started doing for my Whanau as well as myself. Every morning I write down three things I am grateful for, I have been doing this for years and this week I changed it. I now pick a person and write down three things I love about them, I then take a pic of it and send it through WhatsApp or messenger and they LOVE it. Here’s an example, here’s what I wrote and send to my Mum in the UK; 1.

I love your vitality for life, you are so full of energy and affect those around you with it.

Your love for your family, now I’m a Mum I get how much you sacrificed for us, so thank you.

I love that you love to sing karaoke, even if there’s no mic or system, a hair brush will do and off you go.

We don’t often tell those we love what we really do love about them, we take it for granted that they know, yet I have been doing this now for 6 days and everyone I have shared my three things with loves it, they well up, they think about it for ages, they feel better. And it’s not about them repaying the gratitude, it’s about you being honest, vulnerable and real. Taking the time to tell them what you specifically love and miss about them will connect you at a deeper level, freshen things up and allow them to feel just how much they mean to you. Try it, I guarantee you will feel good, it will bring a smile to your face and their’s.

Apparently American women suffer more from female diseases than those of any other nation because of faulty education, particularly the attempt of young women to compete with their brothers in the study of classics and higher mathematics. How VERY reckless of them. The author, a Dr J H Kellogg is sure that more than anything, women need knowledge of the humble industries, not burdening themselves with complex subjects that can wear them out. No wonder I’m worn out - my foolish mother didn’t pay nearly enough attention to teaching me sweeping and dusting or how to dream up interesting, untaxing things to say to my husband when he gets home tired after a busy day. Why, oh why did I study the classics? I’ve been swotting up on the EFFECTS OF SOLITARY VICE IN GIRLS and the dangers of DANCING AND CARDPLAYING. The author’s opinion is that these forms of amusement ought to be discountenanced by respectable Christian people everywhere as they are evils of a pernicious character. He’d have been horrified to know what women in the Wakatipu get up to. We go hiking even though we are so weak and frail and prone to hysteria, and as for bike riding….We’re constantly being overstimulated here - not just with dancing and cardplaying and the great outdoors, but the fabulous opera in Margot and Bruce Robinson’s Paul Bangay designed garden on Sunday night, and Rodger Fox and the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra knocking our socks off on Feb 27 in the Memorial Hall. Local girl Anderson Rocio is being the warm up for the big Sole Mio shows that are touring NZ. The nearest ones to us are at the fab Oamaru Opera House, Dunedin and Invercargill. I went to see the movie “AMMONITE” which I thought was about fossil hunting. It was, but there was also a LOT of lesbian sex which Mr Kellogg would not have tolerated. Even I was bit shocked, but it’s a terrific film, all the same. My London sister just got her Covid jab and I’m constantly monitoring the UK situation and hoping that moron Boris has finally got things under control so they can leave. All our friends in other parts of the world are so envious of our smart black and silver passport. There used to be an ad in the posh mags for some very expensive black and silver plumbing fittings - everything on the page was that colour - top notch Swiss watches, designer handbags AND our stand out from the crowd passport. It’s really interesting talking to so many of our new New Zealanders who have realised that the Kiwi PP is actually the ultimate status symbol. They are happy to do the screeds of paperwork involved to prove they aren’t money launderers, or riddled with syphilis or otherwise unworthy of our nation, and have to invest $10 million in New Zealand (not in property) - it’s a very big price to pay but the applications are flooding in. Big congrats to Sheree and Phil Newsome who’ve just become grandparents - their lucky grandson will have his own black and silver status symbol. Welcome to the world,little Master Newsome!

This book takes us on a journey through history - from the grafﬁti covered bars of Pompeii to modern day gastronomy, Michelin stars, the invention of the taco truck, and a smorgasbord of everything in between. Each chapter introduces its own story, a moment in time somewhere across the globe that shaped eating out as we know it. It is written from Sitwell’s Western perspective and there is a slight bias toward the UK’s food history particularly towards the end, but it is still very readable, especially for the chefs and foodies among us. It’s fast paced, well written, and has just the right amount of delicious detail that will leave your mouth watering for more.

Winner of the Man Booker International Prize in 2019, Celestial Bodies is the ﬁrst novel from the Gulf to be nominated for the award. Written by Omani author Jokha Alharti, the novel is based in Oman and set around the impact of social change and the resulting pressures within society. The structure of the novel switches between three generations of an Omani family, the family tree depicted at the opening of the book provides little assistance in understanding the complex narrative which alternates from third person to the voice of Abdallah in ﬁrst person. Slavery was abolished in Oman in 1970 and it is evident that this is a key theme and presents a dark history within the roots of the novel. Despite the misshapen and challenging narrative, the book provides an interesting insight into a lesser known culture in many other parts of the world.

Through memorable musical moments and interviews with over 80 artists, Burns chronicles the history of this unique American art form. In it, we not only come to understand the roots and formation of country music but we get a glimpse of American social history, told through music. From the time-honoured music of the American South to the chart toppers of today, we soon come to appreciate that country music has been a major inﬂuence on most of the music we now listen to.

Fight fashion waste with the Six Items challenge This March, Wastebusters and Sustainable Queenstown are once again turning the spotlight on fashion waste by encouraging people to have a go at the Six Items challenge.

A 2020 report by The Formary found that the majority of New Zealand textile waste (including upholstery) ends up in landfill - an estimated 220,000 tonnes every year.

Participants limit their wardrobe for a month, with the goal of rethinking their relationship with clothing and fashion.

Globally, we continue to make vastly more clothes than we could ever wear (an estimated 150 billion items per year for a population of 7.8 billion). The production of these items creates more climate emissions than aviation and shipping combined.

It’s the second year that the two groups have run Six Items, to raise awareness about the waste, exploitation and environmental impacts of its production and disposal. Wastebusters event organiser Abbey Lewis said that the first Six Items challenge had been embraced by people from all around Central Otago. “The feedback from our participants was that they learnt a lot by giving the Six Items challenge a go. It’s a chance to take a break from buying new clothes, and make the most of what you already have in your wardrobe. This year there are a couple of more accessible options into the Six Items challenge. “We heard from some of our participants last year that the Six Item limit could be a bit too restrictive, especially for mothers of small children and anyone who had a formal event during the month. By expanding the options, more people can participate.

A huge amount of resources are extracted to produce clothes that are often only used for a short time before being sent to landfill. As well as this waste of resources, there’s the harm to the environment caused by toxic chemicals, dyes and microplastics and a workforce facing exploitative labour practices. Participants sign up for the Six Items challenge at Wastebusters website. The team will provide them with information and support throughout the Challenge, including information about the clothes swap launch event hosted by Sustainable Queenstown and wrap celebration in Wanaka. They can also join the Six Items conversation on social media by tagging Wastebusters or Sustainable Queenstown. • Life’s too short to wear clothes you don’t like. My philosophy on clothing after 6 items is “buy what you love, mostly second-hand, always quality”. My goal is to have less clothes, love them all and wear them out. • Don’t try to be perfect. Don’t give up, bend the rule if you have to and above all think about the message. • It’s not as daunting as it may seem and can be a lot of fun. Even if you think you are well aware of the issues around fast fashion it will still get you thinking differently. • Don’t be too hard on yourself, treat it as a holiday from thinking about what you are wearing and a chance to rethink your wardrobe, not as an exam that you have to pass.
