The Minister has spoken. Minister Nash has spoken, do not expect any more government support for “bleeding” tourism businesses. Unless there is a change of alert levels. Ok, so rather than be proactive and support the tourism industry, just cut us off at the knees and only feed us a bit of wage subsidy every time another community outbreak occurs. Case in point right now with Auckland at Level 3. Thanks Minister Nash, thanks Prime Minister Ardern. That is really positive and kind. Community outbreaks here and in Australia will keep happening. That’s a given but no reason to abandon plans for an Aussie Bubble and giving hope to “bleeding” tourism in our region. The Aussies let Kiwis enter without quarantine, then quickly and definitively shut us off at the first sniff of Covid, as they have done now with the latest outbreak. They do the same thing domestically. Look at Victoria. Cut off from the rest of Australia. But you can still travel Sydney to Brisbane return with no quarantine. If our leaders really gave a hoot about the lower South and West Coast, they would work harder on that Aussie Bubble. Minister Nash says they are “working hard” but what does “working hard” mean? Because it seems whenever Minister Nash’s boss, the PM, speaks another pathway to open borders with Australia is proposed.

What was it the PM said pre-Christmas? Oh, that’s right… “Cabinet has agreed in principle to establish a quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia in the first quarter of 2021”. Fake news or are the words “in principle” political speak for bullshit? You decide. But for those of us who need to operate a business this teasing is just cruel. We know there will be a stop/start nature to such a bubble. Right now, it would be closed. Like most New Zealanders, I am a big supporter of the sledgehammer method of dealing with Covid outbreaks. Shut it down quick smart. But then be prepared to open back up again. As soon as Australia starts allowing Kiwis in without quarantine again, we should be doing the same with any State of Australia that has no community cases. However, it seems the Government are not prepared to work hard enough to make an Aussie Bubble work - turning us into the sacrificial lambs who are being slowly strangled. For the greater good we must go into hibernation, or pivot, close permanently, pick fruit in Cromwell, or just go broke. In the meantime, get your hand out for the next round of the wage subsidy because as Minister Nash said, it is the most we can expect in way of financial support.

Tourism Minister Stuart Nash has dashed hopes of a targeted wage subsidy for Queenstown businesses and said they need to face the “cold, hard reality” of 2021. Nash, speaking to Newshub’s The AM Show last week, says there are tourism businesses “bleeding all over the country”. But, there are unlikely to be any international tourists in New Zealand until next year at the earliest. The question for government then, he said, is how much taxpayers’ money they should use to “subsidize or prop up businesses that are probably not going to be viable for at least another 11 months”. Nash told show host Duncan Garner: “If you’ve got a business that is solely or predominantly reliant on overseas tourists and you haven’t been able to pivot from an international base to a domestic base, then I’m afraid you’re probably going to have to have some very hard conversations with your bank, your creditors, your directors and your employees. “The cold, hard reality is that we’re probably not going to see overseas tourists in this country until next year.” He said the government is “working very hard” on an Australian bubble. “That will alleviate it if we can get that across the line,...” Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult and business leaders have been lobbying the Labour government in recent weeks for a return to the wage subsidy for tourism businesses.

Queenstown rates valuation delayed. By Paul Taylor
Queenstown property owners will have to wait to find out the rating valuation of their homes. Quotable Value (QV) usually provides an updated rating valuation every three years, which QLDC uses to set the rates. The latest was due to estimate the value of homes in October 2020, but has been delayed due to Covid. Council finance boss Stewart Burns: “The Council does not believe that QV is likely or reasonably able to complete a credible revaluation based on an effective date of 1 October 2020 given the unique circumstances of the global pandemic and its effects on the district and national property markets. “The Valuer General has therefore approved this requested deferral until 2021, and this is most likely to take place in late October or early November with an effective date of 1 September 2021. “QV is confident that it will be able to assess values for all property types under this revised timeframe,.”. A Rating Valuation is the estimated property price at the effective date of valuation. Rating values are independently audited by the Office of the Valuer General, and are not intended for the purposes of insurance or current market valuation. This General Revaluation will be effective for rates from 1 July 2022.

Arts+Culture Arctic trek brings summertime ‘Snow’ to the South “It’s a bit weird to be sitting and drinking with a fit boy with your Dad’s ashes in your backpack.” ‘A Hundred Words for Snow’, by award-winning UK playwright Tatty Hennessy, is a delightful 85-minute one-hander about exploring, and explorers. It is presented by Moose of Fire Productions, a mother-daughter team who are about to find out for how long they can share a car, accommodation, and a production while touring! 15-year-old Rory has suddenly lost her father. When she was younger, he was her playmate and fellow adventurer, creating maps and treasure hunts, pretending to be like the great Arctic explorers – the ‘beardy dead men’: Nansen, Shackleton, Freuchen, and more. After reading his journal, she decides to take his ashes on the trip of a lifetime. She sets out achieve his unfulfilled dream - to go to the North Pole. With the awkward blend of superior self-assurance and agonising self-doubt typical of a 15 year old, Rory peppers her story with facts and characters from Victorian explorers right through to the people she meets on her travels. It is a richly-told tale filled with nuance and wit, superbly brought to life by young actor Laniet Swann. Her moving portrayal of Rory in the production’s New Zealand premiere season earned her the Emerging Talent Award at the 2019 Dunedin Theatre Awards. Moose of Fire Productions’ Creative Director Ellie Swann is thrilled to be bringing this play to regional audiences: “This is just such a lovely story – somehow small, and yet it seems to encompass all the vastness of being.” The company has been established with the expressed intention to tour quality professional theatre to regional and rural areas, as well as the bigger centres. “We were disrupted by the covid lockdown, and have lost funding avenues due to the timing, but we are thrilled to be able to tour again. I am especially excited to share this special play that affected me greatly when I first read it, and it still does. It is about growth and grief and adolescence and family, and all the emotional messiness they entail. It is a superbly-nuanced piece that will touch many people.” Rehearsals proved to be challenging and entertaining; Miss Swann is required to bring to life several different characters in Rory’s journey, including Norwegian ones. The team worked with dialect coaches to extract the differences of each person. “Re-learning an English accent for Rory wasn’t too bad,” Miss Swann says, “as we lived in England when I was little. But the Norwegians were a very different challenge! Not only are there teenagers and their ‘cool’ way of talking, I also needed to be an older, educated woman, and a little old man!” Miss Swann also found a scene about a sexual encounter a challenge at first to rehearse: “My mother directing
me, and my Dad in the tech booth!” However, the actor’s favourite scenes are the poignant ones where Rory makes some very grownup realisations, and also the scenes with a Polar Bear and a helicopter. “This is why I love theatre – the emotional extremes, but also the variey of places and situations we take our imaginations. In a covid world, we can still travel!”

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
I’m writing this from the Bay of Islands - bobbing about on a boat with our friends. February was meant to be spent with my sister and her family but their flight to NZ was cancelled in January and they can’t get a quarantine slot till late March now. We haven’t seen any of them for over a year and I ‘d give anything to have them here with us fishing and swimming and paddleboarding. I wish the government would take into account the number of New Zealanders wanting to come back to visit family, and make more quarantine spaces available. We aren’t the only ones desperate to see new grandchildren or to have what might be a last visit with ageing grandparents. In the meantime, since I can’t see my sister, I’m seeing a LOT of New Zealand. I had four fantastic days in the Marlborough Sounds as my friend had just finished a course on how to drive a boat. Having me as her 2IC didn’t make her job any easier, but we did have a lot of fun and somehow managed not to have any major whoopsies. I don’t normally help on boats, as my husband used to yell at me when I did anything wrong, so I said if he didn’t speak politely and quietly, I’d stop helping. It’s been nearly twenty years since I was last a boatgirl, and it was so much fun, I might start being my husband’s dogsbody again. The highlight of my husband helping career was when I lost the argument about who was going to drive the truck down our narrow, twisty drive - I was to do the driving and he would stand in the boat and fend off the branches. He told me in no uncertain terms to “GO SLOWLY”. I crept down at about 5 km’h with the windows down and suddenly he starts yelling “GO FASTER”. I obeyed as I am a very obedient wife. We got to the bottom and he leapt off the boat in a rage with leaves in what remained of his hair in those days, bloody welts across his head. Apparently he’d said “NO FASTER”. Oops - so sorry…. We have a lot of miscommunication in our marriage, and this week’s miscommunication cost him a $100 fine from his poker mates . While I was in the Sounds, he was at a boys’ poker weekend. I knew what day we were getting on our friends’ boat, but my husband said to arrive the day before and we’d head off early the next day.The poker boys don’t actually want wives turning up at their events, but they were still very kind and polite to me, And very mean to my husband. The Bay of Islands is SO different from the Sounds. The B of I has much flasher boats and houses, and the water is much warmer. We caught a couple of blue cod in the Sounds but they were just under the right size so we had to put them back. I did catch a very impressive dogfish (it sounds much more thrilling if it’s called a shark) and we had to ring my friend’s son to ask how to get the hook out without losing a finger. In the B of I, my friend Maryann caught a tiny snapper, but as she started reeling it in, a huge big granddaddy snapper snapped it up and she ended up hauling in a fish that was half her height. The other big difference is that there are lots of little restaurants and cafes around the Sounds - you can boat or walk to all sorts of lodges and hotels, while up here, there are just a few campgrounds, so you really have to have your own house and/ or boat to be able to enjoy the area. Well done to everyone who objected to DOC’s decision to stop cyclists on some of the new cycle trails. So many people wanted to be heard that it would have taken over 6 months to hear them all. I hope it makes all the powers that be realise how attached we are to the cycle trails - it’s astonishing to think they didn’t even exist 20 years ago, and now they are such an important part of the Wakatipu.

Fingers and toes crossed that when you read this, the South Island is back at Covid Level 1 which means on Saturday (Feb 20) you can get along to Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell for the spectacle and speed of methanol gulping, fire breathing ‘Beasts of Speedway’ competing in the penultimate round of the fiercely fought 20/21 Mag & Turbo Super Cup. Fibreglass body panels give Super Saloons ‘the look’ of iconic Chev and Ford ‘Muscle Cars’, but these are highly sophisticated race cars with complex space frame chassis, full race 700-800 horsepower plus V8’s and all manner of other specialised parts, almost all imported from the USA. These cars don’t come cheap, ranging from around $70,000 and upward. Last season’s Mag & Turbo second and third place-getters, Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway ‘t’ drivers Ray Stewart (34t) and Greig Johnston (77t) are back on the Cromwell clay along with Paul Simon (7t) and Owen Dixon (95t). At the opposite end of the cost and horsepower spectrum are Youth Ministocks. It’s quite amazing that behind the wheel of these 1200cc miniature stock cars slithering and sliding around the track, and occasionally making contact, are 12 to 16 year old boys and girls. On Saturday they’ll be going all out to win the 2021 Southland Youth Ministock Champs. Other classes racing include ‘Winged Demon’ Sprint Cars, biff ‘n bash Stockcars, Commodore-powered ‘Wingless Sprint Cars’ Six Shooters, low and wide Saloons, and heaps of fun Productions. Gates open at 2pm with racing at 4pm.

The Porter family, owners of Queenstown Park Station are once again opening their station to the community for a free day of recreational mountain bike riding next Sunday, 21 February. “This is always a fun event and an opportunity to experience the spectacular landscape and stunning views of the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers from a different perspective,” a spokesperson for Remarkables Park Limited says.
It’s been a hard week for many it seems, I have connected with so many people, family, friends and clients and this was the resounding feedback.
“Participants are encouraged to take their time and stop often to enjoy the unique views.” This year there are two main options for riding through the Station – all starting at Boyd Road (near the turnoff to the Remarkables skifield).
“Glad that week is done, it’s been a tough one.”
The Station ride is via a midway picnic beach, returning to Boyd Road (18km total, but you are welcome to turn around earlier).
In NZ we have it pretty good, we live normally, we might be missing our travel, our people, our adventures, all things considered though, we’ve got it better than most.
The second is the Station to Chard Farm Ride via the picnic beach (13km). You can arrange to be collected from Chard Farm, return via the station or along the Queenstown Trail. “Bring your own picnic lunch and plenty of water and snacks. Coffee, ice cream, water and bacon butties will be available for purchase or bring your own picnic lunch and snacks.”

How do you keep connected and help those who are less fortunate than us? It’s simple, we need to connect and share good things with them, lift them, inspire them, let them know what you really think about them. Now is the time. When we were living life pre-covid we would have been with our people, shared real time, in person hugs and connection, so now more than ever we need to connect virtually differently and here’s why. People are missing you. They are missing their old life. They are frightened about what the future holds. It’s like groundhog day. Here’s what I have started doing for my Whanau as well as myself. Every morning I write down three things I am grateful for, I have been doing this for years and this week I changed it. I now pick a person and write down three things I love about them, I then take a pic of it and send it through WhatsApp or messenger and they LOVE it. Here’s an example, here’s what I wrote and send to my Mum in the UK;

Before COVID-19 hit New Zealand’s shores last year, most people’s understanding of defending a border would have come from watching TV reality show Border Patrol.
After they enter New Zealand, we might not know them, but societally they become part of “us”, albeit temporarily.
It is easy to understand — on the maps, our country is surrounded by an ocean moat, a natural border. This makes controlling risks arriving from overseas relatively easy as there are limited points at which they can enter New Zealand. Since February 2, 2020, when a travel ban on non-citizens who had travelled through China was introduced, borders have been very much in the news. Most recently, Northland iwi announced Te Tai Tokerau Border Control would be introducing check points in the region in response to a community case of COVID-19. Those actions have been controversial, with the police subsequently closing down the check points on grounds of safety, even though they supported the same checkpoints in August 2020 during the Auckland community outbreak. This raises the question of what sort of border is Te Tai Tokerau trying to control, and is it a border at all?
What’s a border anyway? There are three important things to realise about borders — humans create them, they don’t just occur at the external edge of a state, and not all borders involve the government. You may find the first idea challenging. We did not make up our physical geography. The ocean border is real. But humans did create the map that depicts our country. We know from our history that the state of New Zealand originated from British colonisation, that its name is now often referred to as Aotearoa New Zealand, reflecting Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The Realm of New Zealand includes other states and dependencies — Niue, Cook Islands, Tokelau and the Ross Dependency in Antarctica. From this, we see that even our description of New Zealand can vary, depending on where we stand. By extension, our description of New Zealand’s border will vary. We can now start to see that borders are more than lines on the map. Borders create spaces that can be used for different purposes, such as security or safety, with associated processes.
Borders define ‘us’ and ‘them’ Borders also have many effects, one of which is on our identity. For example, gated communities are bordered spaces, fenced and patrolled business premises are bordered spaces. If we are inside a gated community, we will identify with that community and its desire for safety and privacy. Outside the gate is everyone else and, potentially, risk and insecurity. To get inside the gated community, particular processes are needed such as membership of the community through ownership of property, or access to a gate key. The means of containment, the border, creates an “us” and “them”. When we apply this thinking to the external border, our society is bordered by the controls at gateway sea ports and airports. Before foreign visitors pass through these controls, they are “them”.
Managing the COVID-19 threat has involved creating types of borders not familiar to New Zealanders, from societal lockdowns to the creation of specifically bordered spaces — for example, the Managed Isolation and Quarantine facilities (MIQs) and the land borders during the Auckland community outbreak in August. Most significantly for the many people prevented from travelling internationally, government policy has bordered our lives by keeping us confined to our own island nation. All these borders have had effects on New Zealand society. One important effect has been to change whom we identify with — whom we see as “us” and “them”. Achieving a COVID-free New Zealand has involved creating a range of borders that differentiate, and in some cases separate, the safe “us” from the risky “them”. Even close family members can temporarily become “them”. We see this in reports of MIQ staff being isolated by their friends, family and business contacts when they are off duty.
The iwi borders Let us now return to those iwi borders. What are they exactly? Their stated purpose is to protect the iwi population, many of whom are at high risk from COVID-19, as well as provide a community service by preventing the virus spreading. The former is certainly identifying with their tribal group and the particular needs and vulnerabilities of that group, but they are also identifying with the COVID-free New Zealand — the so-called team of five million. This type of border raises a further question about who has, or should have, control of different types of borders. It is hard to argue against Te Tai Tokerau’s case, but in New Zealand law they have no authority to limit the free movement of people. Only agencies of state have that. Multiple borders have always existed in Aotearoa New Zealand. We just haven’t been aware of them before. These examples start to reveal them. For some people, these new borders are restrictions, for others they provide a certain freedom — maybe not freedom from fear but freedom to move about within different sized bubbles in relative safety. Seeing them as a part of New Zealand’s border landscape makes evident issues such as human rights, security, legal authority and equity. A bigger discussion about New Zealand’s borders is clearly needed.

COMMUNITY NOTES New Civil Defence tool helps Otago Get Ready Emergency Management Otago is encouraging residents across the region to sign up to Gets Ready, a proven two-way communication tool which helps people better prepare for emergencies and be more informed, co-ordinated and resilient when they occur. Gets Ready is a well-established system that was set up in the Selwyn District after the 2010-11 Canterbury earthquakes. It has already been trialled in Central Otago and Queenstown’s Kelvin Heights Peninsula for the past year and is now being rolled out regionwide. Three key benefits of signing up to Gets Ready: 1. Find out what’s happening, what to do and how to help others via email/text alerts. Get localised updates FAST about situations that directly affect you, from small scale events (boil water notices or fire bans) to major emergencies (earthquakes, floods, fires, severe weather events, tsunamis/seiches etc.) to help you look after your family, neighbours, friends and work colleagues. 2. Be part of a co-ordinated community emergency response. Help Civil Defence plan more effectively for emergencies by registering skills or resources you have (such as 4WDs, generators, First Aid training etc.) that can be used if needed. Vulnerable community members are also encouraged to provide details of special assistance they may require such as power, mobility or translation.

Launching a new business is a leap of faith and test of mettle even at the best of times, never mind in grip of a global pandemic.

But, even in Queenstown where the economic hit of Covid-19 has been severe, there are those prepared to take the plunge.
The result is total sensory deprivation, allowing for deep relaxation and also taking all weight off any aching limbs.
City Cave, which opens in Remarkables Park next month, is the new venture of local business partners Luke Hutchinson and Riki Hunter.

Set across 233 square metres of the former Hannahs shoe store building, it will offer a range of health and wellness therapies including floatation pools, infrared saunas, massage, yoga, breath work classes and more. It was actually the lockdown which prompted the pair, who both have a background in construction, to commit to the project. Hutchinson was a regular at a similar wellness centre in Wellington, initially using the saunas to cut weight for fights and eventually trying floatation. “It became a massive part of my weekly routine,” he says. He’d lived and worked in Queenstown previously so knew there was no dedicated wellness facility here, despite the need for recuperation and restoration among a population with very active lifestyles. “There seemed to be a gap in the market down here, something we could do for Queenstown.” The project began to make even more sense once Covid hit. “Pre-Covid, the attitude was work, work, work, but that break has made people focus more on taking care of their health and mental health, their wellbeing. “People need a place like this.” The three pools at City Cave will use Epsom salt to enable users to float effortlessly in the

City Cave has been established five years and now has 15 centres around Australia. “They had this great proof of concept, so eventually we made the decision to go with the City Cave model,” Hunter says. “Rather than spend the next five years working this out, we wanted to bring a quality business and proven concept to Queenstown. At the end of day that’s what we want to do, bring something of value to town.” They got a good deal on a long lease for the ground floor premises and since then have been working on the high quality fit out.
And there’ll be a range of massages available, deep tissue, sports and relaxation, in the three massage rooms.
Hutchinson says it’s a big financial commitment and, as always, the pressure intensifies as the opening day approaches.
City Cave Queenstown is the first overseas franchise of an Australian brand, set up by Queenstownborn Tim Butters and his business partner Jeremy Hassell.
“But we believe in what we’re doing, so it’s worth it.
Hutchinson had approached Hunter, who’d he worked with previously and had experience in the health and fitness world through Remarkables CrossFit, about the idea.
‘Wellness’ as a concept has become more mainstream and accepted in recent years, used by everyone from high performance athletes to business leaders looking for an edge, to recover physically and keep balanced and, it’s now recognised as something that can benefit everyone.
After lockdown the pair began to do due diligence on their own project, checking out similar facilities around the country, looking for property and suppliers. Then, after a chance meeting with Butters’ father, they got on the phone to the City Cave duo, initially just for advice.
“We’re not doing it for the tourists, it’s for locals. We want to build a community, where people feel they can come and clear everything out.”
“We’re in construction, so not necessarily the target audience,” Hunter says, “but my own experience is I’ve found this really valuable.
“They were great,” says Hunter.
“You own a business, have small children, so don’t necessarily always get quality sleep, this is a good way to destress and get yourself together.
“They were really transparent and open and genuinely wanted to help us.
“It’s something to build it into your lifestyle, to do regularly.”
“They told us the mistakes they’d made, and funnily enough we were about to do pretty much all of them - too bigger premises, too many services.”

Riding mountain bikes with friends is a summer quintessential in Queenstown. But someone has to do all the shuttle driving. Instead of pulling straws and nominating a friend to miss out on an epic run, bike taxis have become a popular option. Enter Amy Freedman Davis, who bought the Queenstown Bike Taxis business almost four years ago. Amy was already well-known in the mountain biking community. A passionate mountain biker herself, she’s one of the brains behind some of the region’s best mountain biking events (think McGazza Fest and the Atlas SOS fundraiser), which raise money for the Queenstown Mountain Biking Club. After managing Atlas Beer Café (which is synonymous with mountain biking) for six years, Amy’s first foray into business was ‘Pick Me Lick Me’ – a mobile, bike-based ice cream vendor. “My ice cream business was not difficult, but it wasn’t my own product. I was on-selling product from Wellington and Auckland. The bike taxi business was my opportunity to get into something I could make more of my own. And bikes are something I’m really passionate about,” says Amy.

“I have learned heaps. It has been an interesting rollercoaster, one might say! I bought it with a business partner and soon realised that wasn’t the right choice. I took the business to him after a year and a half and said ‘things aren’t working as a business relationship’; I asked to buy him out and he agreed to walk away, which is awesome.”
“It is what it is. Recently, I did my first group in two weeks and all my customers were frothing. They had never ridden Rude Rock or Hot Rod [trails] before. It reminded me that this is why I have the business. It is super rewarding to see their reactions at the bottom of the trails when they have ridden them for the first time.”
Amy adds that many people assume the business is much bigger than it really is and she’s learned to streamline her business so that she runs fewer trips, but with more guests. In winter, the business morphs into Queenstown Snow Transport, carrying guests to all five local ski areas, including Snow Farm.
Amy’s positive about the future and says she wouldn’t have chosen to operate a seasonal tourism business if she wasn’t passionate about what she does and prepared to be resilient and adaptable.
But when Covid-19 forced the closure of our borders to international travellers, Amy had to adapt again. “I’m barely operating now and I have got a full-time job again. I still have two big bank loans that I need to pay off – I need to pay off my busines partner and the van, and all those expenses you forget about with running a business – the website and all those things. The business runs well enough to look after

business levels to any great extent. Most operators tell me that November and December (until Christmas) were relatively quiet then Christmas and New Year were ok but from around 10 January, it’s become grim indeed.
Cast your mind back to December 2020 when our Prime Minister announced an impending Aussie bubble and we would see Australians back in our district during the first quarter of 2021. I actually recall being high-fived by a business owner in town in response to that. How quickly things change. A raft of COVID cases in Australia over the Christmas period, followed by just a handful here, and I think it’s safe to say that we’re back to square one. I hate to sound pessimistic but I think it’s important for us all to be realistic about the situation. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we see Australians here before the end of the year and our other international visitors before 2022. Following the lockdown last year, kiwis responded by jumping on planes and heading to our part of the world. I think they simply wanted to taste the freedom of travel again, albeit domestic. That said, school holidays and a few events in the third quarter treated us quite well and it was really only November and December when we started to notice a falloff in
In all of the above, I’m telling you what you already know. What you’re more interested in is how we navigate our way through this. The harsh reality is that we are going to have to ask Government for support once again. I’ve opened the batting for the district, and will be speaking with with the Minister of Tourism, Stuart Nash and the PM tomorrow. In those discussions I’m asking them to agree to a reintroduction of the wage subsidy for tourism and hospitality, and to consider other measures such as some sort of incentive to encourage kiwis to travel. These measures won’t solve all the problems but they may help many businesses, which might otherwise fail, to survive. I’ve received a bit of grief from people in other areas, for expecting Government to bail us out. First of all, I’m not talking about Queenstown alone. I’m talking about Wānaka, Fiordland and Te Anau, Central Otago and the West Coast. We’re all pretty much in the same situation – the reality is that unless you are within a car drive of Auckland – Rotorua, Coromandel, Northland or Tauranga for example – then kiwis are losing enthusiasm to pay around $2,000 to bring their families this far south. My response to those who criticise, is that our part of the country has batted well above its weight for many many years in being the focal point for New
Zealand’s largest industry. The foreign exchange generated by our district far exceeds any other part of New Zealand per head of population, and now is our time of need. We need a hand. I’m also making the point to Central Government that the wage subsidy is a low-cost option. If employees are not kept in jobs, they’ll be forced into the dole and be paid by Government anyway. By keeping them working, our businesses will be kept alive, people’s wellbeing will be reinforced, and we will be well placed for a time when COVID eases its grip and the enormous pent up demand for travel lands upon us. We’ve also been pushing hard for the Jobs for Nature program, which for a variety of reasons outside our control didn’t get off the ground last year. We’ll try again, keeping the pressure on DoC to make this great scheme for the benefit of the environment and local workforce. Not to be overlooked is that our ‘Shovel Ready’ projects are now underway and will provide jobs and economic activity for much of the district. These are difficult times for us all. Aside from any Government help we receive we will need to be on our toes in everything we do. I know I don’t need to say this to business at the present time but every cent counts. For my part I will undertake to do everything reasonable in my power to support local business which is of course, the life blood of our district.

Hold your heads up Queenstown. There’s been some alarming news in our media recently, about the position we’ve found ourselves here in Queenstown because of Covid-19. With our borders still closed, our tourism businesses are struggling and there still seems to be no end in sight. While we were hopeful a Trans-Tasman bubble would be operating by the end of March following the Prime Minister’s announcement, the reoccurring cases of Covid-19 out of isolation make us less hopeful. The big issue we’re facing is if we don’t support our businesses through the here and now when our borders do open in some capacity, there might not be many businesses left. The comments from the Tourism Minister last week were very disappointing, as it appears the Government are now going to leave our tourism operators to fend for themselves. The position many are in was unavoidable given the unique circumstances with Covid-19. I would encourage the Minister to again come to Queenstown and talk to the businesses who are suffering and are potentially going to have to close their doors. National’s Spokesperson for Tourism Todd McClay is also keeping up to date with what is happening and looking to meet with businesses again soon in our region. I attended the Lake Hayes A & P Show at the beginning of the month and it was fantastic to see such a great turn out. The weather played ball and it provided a great day of entertainment for the family. I was also privileged to speak at the opening of the Maz Islamic Education Centre in Queenstown recently. It is great to see facilities like the Maz Islamic Education Centre opening in our community which will provide free community services and a place for prayer in the Whakatipu area. Issues with Aurora continue and it was alarming reading some of the submissions from people in Queenstown. A community which will be one of the hardest hit by the repercussions of Covid-19 does not then need to be footing the bill for Aurora for its infrastructure upgrades. While we all understand upgrades are needed for the future of our network, this cost should not fall more on the people of the Queenstown Lakes District than the people of Dunedin. While Aurora’s cross-submission was more promising, as the company acknowledged the initial proposal was unfair on Central Otago and Queenstown users, we still don’t know what the final proposal will look like. The cross-submission indicated this would be altered to be more even with Dunedin residents. However, it is still worrying how much concern there is in the community in regards to proposed price increases. The submissions have shown many people are concerned about how some members of the community are going to pay increased power bills, especially given the current climate in Queenstown because of Covid-19. Lockdown Wakatipu – the stories behind the book Join us at Frankton Library for an evening with Toni Caldwell, creator of the book ‘Lockdown Wakatipu’. Hear the stories from the photographer herself as she speaks to us about her creation of this historical record and of our town during a unique period of time. This free event will take place at Frankton Library on 25 February at 5.30pm, and Queenstown Library on 4 March at 5.30pm.
Origami Club Come along and learn origami, the traditional Japanese art of folding paper, in a fun and friendly environment. Sessions will take place on the last Saturday of each month between 1.00pm and 3.00pm at Frankton Library.
Outdoor games on the lakefront We’re hosting outdoor games every Wednesday between 12.00pm and 2.00pm near The Bathhouse on the lakefront. We’ve got everything from badminton and lawn tennis to kubb, jenga and giant pick up sticks, frisbees and balls. It’s the perfect chance for you to challenge a friend or a workmate to a game, and all are welcome!
The Queenstown Dog Walk The Queenstown Dog Walk returns this year and will take place on Saturday 27 February at Matakauri Park. We’ll be meeting at the northern end of the Community Gardens at 10.00am, then heading off on one big dog walk once everyone has had enough time to chat, mingle and mark territory. The walk is free for all to attend and we’ve got giveaways for the best dressed dog and a dog registration bingo too! #TakeTheLead
Food Grading Bylaw review We’re undertaking a review of the QLDC Food Grading Bylaw 2016 and proposing a number of changes be made, including both revoking the Food Grading Bylaw 2016 and adopting an amended fee structure. Changing rooms closed The male and female changing rooms at Queenstown Events Centre will be temporarily closed while we host international and domestic cricket teams. These facilities will reopen on Monday 22 February. The separate toilets by the indoor stadium and the swimming pool changing rooms all remain open as normal. Many thanks for your co-operation.
