In tough times attitude is extra important Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. This is a mission statement or policy printed on the letter head of a friend of ours in Denver who runs assisted care or retirement homes. I was thinking about that after visiting a business that specialises in warrants and vehicle checks, and my experience was less than wonderful. The person who I dealt with must have had a pet die, or a marriage split or something that prevented them from smiling or any nice customer interaction. I have other options of where to go for that service and intend to do that. Straight after that I went to purchase a couple of batteries (retail approx. $500) and had an equally disappointing encounter with a staff member who couldn’t be bothered to walk 3 metres to my truck, to see what sort of batteries I needed. When I asked why, he said it was raining and he was not going to get wet. I told him that I would go elsewhere and did, getting friendly helpful service. One person’s loss is another’s gain. And all it took was basic customer service. Not all my experiences are as terrible as that, even though I do wonder how some of these people keep their jobs, and why the owners/managers hired them in the first place. I owned a clothing store in Queenstown for 20 + years and, when hiring staff, advised them that no matter how bad their day was, (dog got run over, Mum sick, boyfriend left, rent overdue etc ) they had a responsibility to be friendly, smile and not make the customer feel like leaving. If they could not do that, I had no use for them. Luckily, those staff always did their best and continue to be awesome for the current owner of that business. I am working in Lumsden at the moment and often visit 3 different coffee venues. Two are happy and reliable experiences. The other must have a policy that smiling is forbidden. Guess I’m down to two coffee options now. So tough times for a lot of businesses here in the Wakatipu and attitude is extra important. I visited a flooring specialist this week and was greeted and treated well. Someone there pointed out, that they had been getting great service around town, as things were quiet, and staff were doing great in most places knowing how important each and every customer is. They followed that up with, “why couldn’t they be that way before the downturn?” My point exactly. You are only as good as your worst employee … choose wisely. Jeff Hylton

Native Plant Community Nursery Volunteer Sessions Join Wakatipu Reforestation Trust on Wednesday mornings as they grow and nurture native plants in their Community Nursery in Jardine Park. Nursery volunteer sessions are a wonderful way to spend time outdoors with like-minded community members while supporting WRT vision of restoring native plants into the Wakatipu Basin. The Queenstown Lakes Piece of the Carbon Neutral Puzzle You may have read the proposed action plan to get Aotearoa New Zealand carbon neutral by 2050 that was announced last week. Among its focus is an end to electricity derived from fossil fuels, a switch to electric vehicles, low emission practices in animal agriculture, planting more native trees, and heat pumps instead of gas bottles in homes. The item we want to focus on this article is Waste. Waste is something the Sustainable Queenstown axis spins around and a growing passion for many in our district. We have seen the amazing work done by KiwiHarvest in Queenstown who are out in their green van five days a week rescuing perfectly good food to be distributed throughout our community through some of the incredible organisations we are lucky to have here. This is just the type of circular system the Carbon Neutral report is looking to create more of which is excellent to hear, seeing as a third (A THIRD!) of all landfill sites in our country is made up of food. Sadly, a landfill doesn’t act like a compost and when organic matter is thrown in, it decomposes without oxygen and, as a result, releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, and one this action plan aims to reduce. The plan also speaks of the need for a transformation from “a throw away culture to one that values our resources”. And to that we say, “yes please!”. We’ve seen a few cafes in Queenstown and Arrowtown (and many over in Wanaka) become ‘SUC Free’ (Single Use Cup Free) and many more on the way. Some of our restaurants are happy to serve take out in the customer’s own BYO container, and we’re seeing more and more ‘naked fruit & veg’ in baskets and trollies. As a district, we’re becoming collectively aware of the waste we produce and seem to be pretty keen to reduce it, especially when we’ve seen the type of rubbish that gets pulled out of Lake Wakatipu during the Sea Shepherd beach clean-ups. As for Sustainable Queenstown, we’ve been working hard over the past few years to help reduce some of the waste produced in Queenstown Lakes through: - Promoting refilling instead of buying plastic bottles of water. - Offering our metal DISHrupt servewear for event hire instead of buying single-use plates. - Facilitating a Repair Café to make repairing our clothes and homewares the norm instead of replacing them. - Shining a light on alternatives to single-use plastics. - Challenging our community to wear only six core items of clothing for a month to make us think about the waste of fast fashion. So, carbon neutral by 2050 for New Zealand…that’s 29 years to go. If technologies are not delayed and we are not too stubborn to tweak our behaviours, the commission believes we have a chance to get there by 2040. The fact that the US is also aiming for economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2050, makes it seem less far-fetched for our small country to succeed with time to spare. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
What a thrilling week it’s been - we got the news that our daughter in law in Japan had gone into labour, so it was a sleepless night wondering at what exact moment we would turn from being boring old us into real, live grandparents. Isn’t it extraordinary that this baby girl’s arrival caused her mother’s Japanese parents to become grandparents for the first time, her father’s parents also became first time grandparents (I turned into a stepgranny) and there’s now a great crowd of overexcited first time uncles and aunts all over the world. What a very clever achievement for someone who weighs under 3 kilos and has only just learnt to breathe and cry and be adored. Being in strict lockdown in Japan has meant that noone is allowed to visit - fathers can just be there for the birth, and one more short visit. Our granddaughter ( I do LOVE saying that) was born on the Japanese Day of the Demon so all these brandnew babies were dressed up as demons - I hope ours doesn’t turn into a real one!! They had her dressed as a tiny tiger, and anything less demonic looking is hard to imagine. The other wonderful news was that our friend has finally been given a heart transplant - he’d been waiting for over a year to get the call to Greenlane Hospital as there’s no convenient factory that makes new hearts. It’s an anxious wait and a most uncomfortable one knowing that your new one will have come from someone whose death means you can keep having a lovely life. If you haven’t already ticked the box on your driver’s licence saying that you want to be an organ donor, please do. Wouldn’t you rather know your bits and pieces that would no longer be of use to you, could make someone else very happy? I’m very unhappy that my mother has got me addicted to monarch butterflies and watching the whole egg, caterpillar, butterfly, egg thing repeat over and over. It’s far more gripping and stressful than anything on Netflix - the caterpillars suddenly eat all the swan plants, and there’s a mad hunt for more plants, then birds sometimes eat the caterpillars, and now it’s a panic to get more fuzzy fellows to eat the plants - I’m on four different monarch butterfly facebook pages swapping eggs and plants and cats (as they’re known by the aficionados), and I’/m very glad my phone hasn’t got an app showing how many hours a day I spend studying this biological miracle. A different biological miracle is regenerative farming. Camilla Rutherford who’s been a very successful extreme sports photographer, won a scholarship to create a photo essay about this new style of farming which regenerates the soil. Instead of constantly loading it with fertilisers, pest, fungi, herb and other -icides, you sow mixed crops (think sunflowers, peas, chicory - all sorts of goodies) that feed the soil AND the livestock, and make them all healthier. It’s a much more sensible way to farm (if considerably less profitable for the big chemical companies) and I loved listening to all these glossy, happy cattle murmuring to each other as they headed for the morning’s new pasture. I kept having to remind myself I was working - I’m writing travel stories for SCOUT magazine and being sent all over the place to look at interesting things happening in New Zealand. It’s hard to move more than a few feet in any direction without finding amazing New Zealanders doing fascinating things. 1

Arts+Culture Made in Queenstown: folktronica duo Choice releases new album By Bethany G. Rogers
Folktronica duo Choice have released a brand new album that’s been created in and inspired by Queenstown. Claire Forrester and Paul Marcham formed Choice in 2003, bringing together an unusual ensemble of instruments and influences. Both have backgrounds in traditional Irish folk music; Claire incorporates vocals, classical violin and a loop pedal while Paul creates rhythms and basslines inspired by New Zealand’s dub and drum n’ bass scene. Their brand new album, ‘Amongst the Tall Trees’, is rhythmic, ethereal and meditative. The intertwining genres express something modern and distinctive and it feels very ‘Queenstown’ to anyone who knows the town well – an exciting international mix, with a laid-back Kiwi charm and a jawdropping backdrop. “When we started out, we did more folkstyle stuff,” says Claire, “I’d write songs and Paul would add drums. But now, we’ve swapped roles. Paul creates basslines and puts drums to them and then I go in there with core progressions with my loop pedal and add violin and other layers. Then the vocals go on top. We usually build in layers.” Paul says a unique element of this album is that much of it was developed in front of a live audience. “We do a lot of busking. This is the first album where a lot of the songs were created in front of an audience. So we’ll play the version that’s in our heads, then we’ll go home and work on it. We’ll make it 10 or 20 beats per minute faster or change the key. “It’s all made up on the streets. We’ve tried ten different ideas for most songs and we’ve seen how people react to those and went with the ones that worked best – that’s how we’ve created this album. “It’s groovier [than previous albums]. We like to make people dance. By performing in front of a live audience you can see what works and what doesn’t work.” Through improvisation and playing on the streets and at festivals, their style has changed and developed.
“Actually, our style has changed a lot,” says Claire, “We used to say it was kinda like folk with tribal rhythms… it was very upbeat. Now, it’s more like dance music […] we have all manner of beats in there. Drum n’ bass, dub even a bit of hip hop. “Our last album was called ‘Leroy’ and we did an album launch at Biophilia and everyone started dancing. That’s when we decided we wanted to make people dance. It has that festy vibe. But it’s still quite an ambient style… you could go on a road trip with it in the car or do yoga or chill out, but it’s dance-y too. There’s a lot of different ways to access the new album.” “We’ve had lots of different feedback so far,” adds Paul, “People can’t stop moving to it, or they use it to chill out. We feel like we’ve covered a range of different people from young ones who love to dance to older people who want to relax to it.” Because access to recording studios can be prohibitively expensive, Choice decided to buy the required software and equipment instead of renting it each time. This means the entire album has not only been inspired and created on the streets of Queenstown, it’s been produced and edited here too. “Studio time can be thousands of dollars per day! So we thought we’d spend that money once and buy all the gear and software to do it ourselves. We put our hands in our pockets and spent the time recording, editing and producing, all in the house here,” says Paul. Skyline scaling back Queenstown tourism giant Skyline expects to operate on a skeleton staff over the coming months, but has no immediate plans to close. The company, which operates the iconic gondola and luge attraction, drastically restructured in May following the Covid-19 lockdown, cutting staff from about 300 down to 80. It has 30 to 40 staff on fixed term contracts in the resort, to meet demand over the holidays. Skyline Enterprises boss Geoff McDonald says those roles will now finish and the Queenstown operation will carry on with its core staff, who multitask across different roles. “We don’t have any plans to close necessarily,” McDonald says. “We’re monitoring things. It’s been very quiet the last three weeks from mid-January and like everyone else in town we’re quite worried about how the year will pan out until the Aussies come back. “So, we’ll play it by ear.” The company as a whole has Queenstown and Rotorua gondola operations, hotels and property in Queenstown and Dunedin, Christchurch Casinos, as well as offshore operations in Singapore, Korea and Canada. It made more than 500 of its New Zealand staff redundant in May, from a workforce of about 1200. McDonald says Rotorua has had better patronage overall than Queenstown over the holidays and January, due to its proximity to Auckland. “Queenstown is doing it tougher because of the reliance on international visitors. “It’s been very, very quiet the last couple of weeks and everyone in town is concerned. Skyline has tenants, because we have a few commercial properties, so we hear it talking to them as well.” Many businesses in the town are drastically scaling back operations due to the soft January and uncertainty when a trans-Tasman bubble might open without the need for managed isolation stays. Stats NZ released national employment data for the December quarter on Wednesday, with a surprise fall in the unemployment rate from 5.3% to 4.9%. Employment rose by 17,000 in the quarter. The figures were hailed by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and economists, but they are sector specific. A huge rise in construction jobs offset falls in the tourism sector. Stats NZ figures for tourism, released to Queenstown App, show there were an estimated 256,400 people employed in tourism-related industries in December 2020. That’s down 17,200 from the December 2019 quarter, when there were 273,600. Travel agents are one of the worst-hit professions. “Although overall employment is similar to a year ago, looking at movements by industry shows how New Zealand jobs have changed in response to COVID-19 and its restrictions,” NZ Stats labour market manager Andrew Neal said. Nationally, the household labour force survey (HLFS) showed an annual increase of 21,000 people whose main job was in the construction industry, up to 278,300 people in the December 2020 quarter.

McDonald says that would need to be targeted to the right businesses. “It’s hard to generalize with tourism,” McDonald says. “There are some operators up and around the East Cape, North Island, who’ve had really quite good support, because they have a proximity to large populations that are trapped and can’t go overseas. “But then there are others that are in pockets who would benefit. I drove through Franz and Fox over the weekend and they were dead. So I think whatever gets done needs to be very targeted so the right people get assistance.”

The programme has come under increased scrutiny with concerns raised by tourism operators over the transparency and clarity of the programme. • This story was first published by RNZ. The government established the programme in May 2020 to provide funding support for tourism organisations that contribute significantly to their local region and to tourism in New Zealand. The Tourism Recovery Ministers Group was responsible for making decisions, including setting the eligibility criteria. Before the start of a formal application round, the group of ministers approved funding for three tourism businesses. The subsequent formal application round was open for two weeks, and decisions about all applications were made by the end of July 2020. More than $290m has been committed to the tourism sector through the programme. Under the terms of reference the inquiry will look at: • the information available to potential applicants about the programme’s eligibility criteria and assessment process • how applications from tourism businesses have been assessed, including the three businesses that received funding approval before the formal application round began • whether there is any evidence that applications have been assessed inconsistently • any other related matter that it considers it desirable to report on.
