Building a bridge to future sustainable employment. A new year, a new job and a new school term, perhaps even a new school, for hundreds of primary and secondary school children across the district. Taking up the role of Chief Executive for the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce comes with a huge sense of obligation, to serve our business community, the life blood of our special piece of paradise. To me that obligation entails not just thinking about what we can do today, but what we can do tomorrow and who we can do it with. A big part of that picture are our future employees, employers, entrepreneurs, and investors currently thinking (or trying not to think!) about trading in their pools, parks and parties for classrooms, learning and discipline. School prepares not just intellectually, but by helping us navigate the most complex question we all face – how do I get along with my fellow humans. It teaches us how to work together, how to compete (and win) but also how to get asked to play again. We are fortunate in the Wakatipu to have schools led by committed individuals who want to see our children grow and succeed. But what about when they walk out that WHS front door, and Mr Hall, Mr Nathan and Mrs Panapa are no longer looking over their shoulder? One of the most exciting initiatives on the Chamber work programme is working with the Wakatipu High School careers team in supporting the business community to build the bridge to future sustainable employment, and that’s sustainability from both perspectives. We often hear about the challenge businesses face in attracting and retaining talent, and sure our schools aren’t going to churn out fully formed engineers, joiners, plumbers, lawyers, drainlayers or (very importantly) bar and hotel managers and staff. Our local businesses though, can introduce our young people to the exciting and diverse opportunities that lie on their doorstep and by employing and supporting current students and school leavers, we can build a steady future supply of people who are committed or have great memories and want to return. It might mean we need to think a little differently about the shape of our workforce, but who isn’t in these “different” times. For me supporting our students is just as much “buy local” as eating out and shopping locally. You might even find yourself learning something in return. After all, our secondary school students think faster than we do, have more ideas than we do, tech is an extension of themselves and they have a greater passion for looking after our planet (not to mention doing something about it!). If you have an idea that can support this, I’m keen to hear it.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Has anyone seen a shabby old bag lady wandering around muttering about smart fungi? It’s ME! All that rain has made all sorts of mushrooms pop up, and I am certain they are watching me. If I take a bag with me, they hide away and I go home empty handed. If I don’t take a bag, they flaunt themselves shamelessly, and I can only take a handful. Talk about Mrs Crotchety of the Wakatipu - I just add it to all the other things that drive me crazy - does everyone else hate Spark? We have had an invigorating four months of dealing with them, and I don’t even want to try adding up all the hours of hopeful anticipation that this time would be the last call to solve what should be a very simple problem. Now we are trying to have a divorce from them, and that has been more complex than even the bitterest marital variety. Add to that the insanities of the Ladies Mile proposals (I mean, are QLDC planners actually insane?) and reckless drivers and dirty campervan users (funny how those problems haven’t disappeared with our international tourism), Mrs Crotchety has certainly had a lot to be focusing on. It’s not easy being old and snippety. I had a go at being young this week - my lovely niece turned 12 and I gave her a set of knucklebones - she’d never played it before, and I boldly said I’d show her how to do it. My knuckles and eyes had completely forgotten what to do. I’m sure I was one of the best knuckleboners at Arrowtown School once upon a time. Nigel Hirst came and tuned our hideously out of tune piano this week, so maybe a bit of piano practice will get my knuckleboning skills back to their former glory. Some skills I’ve never mastered. My bookclub is full of very talented women who dress beautifully,(not me) cook delicious food that even LOOKS sensational (not me), and know how to use their computers properly (not Sally). It was my turn to host on Tuesday night - my thought of baking a cake went out the window as it was 29 degrees outside, so for reasons unknown, I thought I would make some Ottolenghi deepfried pea and cheese fritters. Nothing more cooling than a bit of boiling fat …. and they looked awful. Lucky for me, my bookclub sisters are not just good at everything else, but have beautiful manners and they didn’t mention my new failure. Someone else who’s got beautiful manners is Philippa Tait. Her 90th birthday lunch was just fabulous, and when I am 90, I hope that I will have such a huge crowd of friends and families who love me as much as hers do. What a star!! And her son in the UK wrote a brilliant poem that I really thought had been included in an anthology of best British poems (as he claimed) about the lady in the stripey French Tshirt. He described his mother to a T. Now that’s a great present. If any men out there who can’t write poetry, but are seeking inspiration for Valentine’s Day, sign your wife or mistress or secretary or nurse or other wonderful woman for membership of the IMPact100 group at www. wakatipucommunityfoundation.co.nz . It’s $1000 for a really fun way to learn about the needs of our community with a whole gang of other enthusiastic local women. This year, they’re hoping to have two lots of $100,000 grants to give away to local groups so do have a look at it. Much more fun and original than a boring old diamond or designer handbag, and it shows you’re a caring kind of chap - loads of brownie points to be scored!! And if you love movies and books and gin and people and money, there’s a very nice job being advertised at Dorothy Browns in Arrowtown. I’m very tempted but I already work there as the bookbuyer and I’m too technologically challenged to work the till, so I’m not allowed to. Life is VERY unfair.

Kiwiana is past its use-by date. Is it time to reimagine our symbols of national identity? status as “Britain’s farm”. Global oil shocks dealt a further blow, ending the post-war economic “golden weather”. Decolonisation spread from the economy to the social, cultural and political worlds.

What’s with those jandals, hokey pokey ice-creams, buzzy bees, Swanndris and gumboots? Far from being random and unrelated objects, these icons of so-called Kiwiana tell a story of late 20th-century nostalgia at a moment of rapid social transformation. Definitions of Kiwiana vary and the term is widely applied to objects, expressions and pastimes that evoke a sense of national identity. But, as sociologist Claudia Bell has argued, it’s an identity where Pukehu culture is dominant.
As author Richard Wolfe put it, Kiwiana objects emerged as “reminders of who we are”, which served as anchors in a world of change. It was sentimental and looked backwards, nestled in nostalgia. This all happened in the context of a wider popular “heritage moment” in the late 20th century. The British historian Raphael Samuel said these “historical fictions” were affectionately conjured up, often in reaction to change, with Americana, Canadiana and Australiana all part of the same phenomenon. In the 1980s, however, economic deregulation meant cheap imports began to flood the local market. Iconic brands were subject to buyouts and takeovers, fuelling nostalgia for a post-war rural idyll.
When including Indigenous content, Kiwiana has occupied a largely aesthetic and apolitical place. The focus has been on flora and fauna, such as the kiwi itself, the silver fern, koru and paua shell. Maori incorporation within Kiwiana involves myth-making, traditional costumes and objects such as kete, poi and tiki. In the 2020s, then, Kiwiana is arguably no longer fit for purpose in a diverse, decolonising nation. Yet these relic symbols persist, part of art and culture in schools and still selling products.
Symbols out of time In a sense, Kiwiana was about evoking the uniformity of a post-war closed economy. The farmed bounty of the land, in particular from the traditional meat and dairy industries, was the mainstay of New Zealand’s economy. Comforting Kiwiana clothing revived a settler farming and rural mythology, such as the Swanndri, a New Zealand-made woollen bush shirt popular in the 1950s and ’60s with rugged outdoor men including farmers, deer cullers and timber workers. Along with lamb chops and full-cream milk, nothing captured this quite as much as the breakfast cereal Weetbix. According to legend, Weetbix fuelled Edmund Hillary in his successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. By the 1980s it had captured an estimated 40% of the breakfast cereal market.
Comfort in times of anxiety When Britain joined the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973, New Zealand lost its major trading partner and

When local supermodel Rachel Hunter become the advertising face of Tip Top, she embodied the connections between the land, produce and consumption. Commercial interests were central in the construction of Kiwiana.
The past isn’t what it used to be
An expression of uniqueness
Post-war family values gave way to a greater acceptance of divorce, blended families, and solo and gay parenting. Traditional Kiwiana was effectively out of step in this new world.
As cheap imports began to replace locally made objects, Kiwiana came to represent a strange kind of authenticity. The humble jandal is a case in point. Auckland businessman Morris Yock started making these “Japanese sandals” in his garage in 1957. Touted as an example of Kiwi ingenuity and adaptation, they were sucked up into the Kiwiana vortex.
At the same time, migration from Asia and the Pacific was creating an ethnically diverse population with no cultural memory of Kiwiana or its origins in the fuzzy sameness of a New Zealand that no longer existed. The professional transformation of the once predominantly rural and amateur “national game” of rugby embodied the shift. And yet, Kiwiana has been carried along in the visual, digital age by a wave of marketing and souvenir commerce. The symbols may have been past their expiry date, but there was still profit to be made in Kiwiana. It might even be that Kiwiana filled a void left by the decline of religion and its icons in an increasingly secular age. As a kind of national symbolism it is broad, accepting and appealing. But a closer examination reveals a narrow and nostalgic set of symbols that mirrored colonial settler narratives at a time of economic, social and cultural change. Comforting nostalgia on one level, it’s nonetheless the assertion of an imagined world that was fading away.
The buzzy bee re-emerged in response to the plethora of plastic toys from overseas. Manufactured from 1948 by the Ramsey brothers, the local variation of the wooden pull-along toy was lodged in the infant memories of baby boomers.
With international tourism paused for the time being, maybe now is the perfect opportunity to gently draw the curtains on our Kiwiana past and re-imagine the symbols of our national identity.
Objects such as the buzzy bee and Crown Lynn crockery became valued for their manufactured localness — a response, as Claudia Bell put it, to “the risk of annihilation of difference through the impacts of globalisation”. In the late 20th century, trade with China, Australia, the United States and Japan had overtaken Britain, and tourism had become a major industry. Ironically, kitsch Kiwiana souvenirs made overseas filled a new demand for symbols of an invented national story of Kiwi culture. Meanwhile, massive social, socioeconomic and political change was challenging the post-war Kiwi consensus. Race and gender relations were shifting. The Waitangi Tribunal’s powers were extended in 1985 and te reo Maori became an official language in 1987. Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1986, paving the way for civil unions and same-sex marriage in the early 21st century. What’s On Temporary signage on Queenstown Trails You may see some temporary corflute signage popping up on the Queenstown Trails as QLDC’s Parks team work to promote that ‘TRAILS ARE FOR EVERYONE’ initiative. This is in response to community concerns of user conflict between bikes, walkers, dogs, prams etc. The intent with temporary signage is to allow for the campaign to move around the district as needed. This helps reduce excessive signage and catches user attention as people tend to notice things that are new. The signs will remain in their current locations for about 2 months (through Easter) and then will be shifted to other areas.
Garden Party and Art Trail – Fundraising for Southland Charity Hospital Enjoy an afternoon of classical music, art, Devonshire Tea and a summer market in the beautiful gardens of the Arrowtown Lifestyle Village on Sunday the 7th February from 2pm-5pm. This is a fundraising event in support of the Southland Charity Hospital, with donations, and a percentage of art sales going towards this wonderful community organisation. Ruth Stokes appointed as CEO Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Ruth Stokes has been appointed the new boss of the Chamber of Commerce. The former Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) general manager of operations will take the reins as CEO from February 1. Stokes has lived in the Wakatipu for almost nine years and also worked as a senior executive for Dunedin City Council, after leaving QLDC in January 2015. She also owns Queenstown-based consultancy firm ZQN.7, is a senior associate of Wellington management consultancy firm RDC Group Ltd, and spent seven months with Kiwibuild, as a senior development manager of large scale projects. Chamber interim CEO and chair Craig Douglas told members. “Changing times threw up many worthy candidates, particularly locals who wanted to make a difference. “A robust process highlighted Ruth as the ideal person and we couldn’t be happier that she has agreed to come onboard.”

The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s work Ultra Violet was to have premiered at London’s Covent Garden last year but with the trip cancelled due to COVID, Wanaka audiences will be the first to see this new work by gifted young choreographer Loughlan Prior and composer Claire Cowan. In Ultra Violet they picture themselves as soaring birds or crawling insects on a journey through the musical landscape to create and discover colours beyond the edges of our visible spectrum.

The team at Wanaka’s Festival of Colour arts and ideas festival has revealed a packed week-long programme featuring an exciting mix of theatre, dance, music, visual arts and conversation to take place in April in Wanaka.
The RNZB double bill also features Choreographer in Residence Sarah Foster Sproull’s new work The Autumn Ball, commissioned by the Festival of Colour with a theme of mortality and the autumn season of people’s lives.
Known as ‘the best little arts festival in New Zealand’, the Festival of Colour will run from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 April, with a special free opening night celebration on Sunday 11 April.
Theatre lovers have plenty of choice in the programme with shows for all ages, and an international circus star making his way home for the festival.
Director Philip Tremewan says the 2021 festival will bring heart, soul and creative joy to the town and surrounding area. “COVID has been difficult for us all and we are delighted to be able to bring a programme of exceptional shows for audiences in Wanaka and the surrounding areas. “While we’re unable to present international shows this year, we’re celebrating the huge pool of New Zealand talent.”
Three world premieres feature at the festival – two works from the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Ultra Violet and The Autumn Ball; The Hall, an uplifting play about unconditional love featuring Voices Aotearoa and a community choir; and the New Zealand String Quartet performs The Dry Cardrona for the first time, a new work based on James K Baxter’s poem, composed by Barton Price and narrated by Katherine Baxter.
Bullet Heart Club, the team behind the award-winning Kiwi heartbreaker Daffodils, premieres its new play The Hall – an uplifting story about unconditional love featuring Voices New Zealand and local singers which will be staged in Wanaka and Bannockburn, while Trick of the Light Theatre Company (The Bookbinder, The Road That Wasn’t There) return with two works to be performed at Hawea Flat – Tröll, and The Griegol, featuring the company’s trademark puppetry, storytelling and darkly delicious fantasy, and beloved New Zealand author Janet Frame’s landmark novel, Owls Do Cry is brought to life on stage by Red Leap Theatre. The heavy rain in the south of the country in early January saw two very different reactions: Despair from the holiday-makers trying to take a break from the year we’d had, through to joy and relief from many farmers because the economic pressure of a prolonged dry is very real. Now here we are again, what are we going to do about it? Have we learnt anything? And if water falls from the sky, why do we not have more community water security? For river ecology, and to create certainty and resilience in the entire food chain, local community water solutions should be a priority. Unless we grab the opportunity now, we will continue to see the harsh impact across our country from water shortages and this is simply unnecessary. Imagine the opportunities for us all if we invest in our future security. We’d have more time to plan for the less stressful things. I really hope that our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and government agencies like the Ministry for the Environment take heed of the working examples across NZ that have long proved effective and generally been led by community. With incredible examples like Opuha Water and the Kerikeri Irrigation programme providing us with a base model to follow, we do not have to re-invent the wheel. We must focus on enabling functions, not taking an overly prescriptive and oppressive approach to our future security. In some regions, aquifer recharge – capturing some of the water that rages in winter and storing it underground – has real potential. With what falls from the sky we could certainly have water certainty for our whole community, and as the examples show we do not have to re-invent the wheel, just look at what works and get on with it in other parts of the country. Federated Farmers will continue to champion the need for catchment-based approaches to community water security in 2021.

Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult has hammered the Commerce Commission NZ over its handling of Aurora Energy’s investment plans. Aurora needs CCNZ approval to increase electricity bills to enable it to spend $609 million on upgrading its electricity lines network across Otago.

A Trust tasked with creating affordable housing in Queenstown takes possession of 50 apartments next month - and some are still up for grabs.
But CCNZ, in its daft decision, slashes that spend by $86 million to $523m, in a bid to lower the increases. Boult has written to CCNZ on behalf of Queenstown Lakes District Council, co-signed by council boss Mike Theelen. “The Council recognise the effort of CCNZ to minimise price changes, but note, despite our opposition to the unfair incidence of price changes, that failing to ensure Aurora can develop a strong, sustainable and resilient network is equally undesirable.” Boult says the council wasn’t confident the investment programme proposed by Aurora would meet the needs of the district before CCNZ recommended they do it for $86m less. Underinvestment over the years by Aurora, has left a network of lines and poles not fit for purpose, contributing to power blackouts, especially in adverse weather. QLDC has reviewed the 80 submissions made on CCNZ’s draft decision. Several reach the same conclusion as the council, and criticise the data, modelling and approach CCNZ has used to reach its own conclusions. “It is deeply concerning to read submissions from not only Aurora, Dunedin City Holding Limited and Aurora independent commissioned reports by PWC and WSP but also from the independent Electricity Networks Association, Orion, Vector, The Lines Company, Wellington Electricity Lines Limited (WELL), Unison Networks Limited and Powerco all making the same assertion.” Boult points out that Aurora’s submission is “even more alarming”. Aurora chief executive Dr Richard Fletcher, in his submission, states the CCNZ’s draft decision, if unchanged, will have a “serious impact” on the company’s ability to deliver the essential upgrades. It would “eliminate the possibility” of Aurora making improving its management and data systems to the modern standard. “There are no winners here but this Council cannot and will not accept the risk that Aurora has outlined,” Boult’s letter concludes. “We cannot place our community, our economy and our reputation at risk. “Please refer to our earlier submission that CCNZ must review its Covidbased assumptions pertaining to growth in the QLDC and it must radically review its process that led it to recommend an investment reduction of $86 million.” The letter also criticises CCNZ’s engagement process, in particular the timeframe for the cross-submissions process (when submitters review and comment on other submissions). “In our view CCNZ has not delivered a genuine opportunity to enable not only key stakeholders but our entire community the opportunity to meaningfully engage in this process.”
Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust has the majority of the 78 units in the Toru apartment block at Remarkables Park, Frankton. Twenty-five of the apartments will be allocated to people on the Trust’s waiting list, through its assisted ownership model, Secure home. That sees people purchase the properties through a 100-year land lease arrangement, with the Trust retaining ownership of the land in perpetuity. Households also pay a ground rent of 1% on the ‘land’ value component of the property which averages about $40-$50 per week. QLCHT executive officer Julie Scott says average one-bed units are selling for $220,000 and two-bedroom unit prices average $320,000. “Team these sale prices up with a deposit requirement of just 5%, for those who qualify for the Government’s First Home Loan, and it makes these units the most affordable method of home ownership at present,” she says. A typical one-bedroom apartment purchaser will end up paying a total of about $200 per week for mortgage repayments, ground rent and body corporate fees, Scott explains. “$200 per week to own your own home is a no-brainer compared to the same amount to rent a room in a flatting situation.” Other outgoings such as electricity and heating are expected to be very low due to the highly insulated design of the building. Approximately 15 of the Secure Home units have been allocated, and the Trust is seeking applications from households for the remaining 10.
A Commerce Commission spokesperson says: “The submission period on our draft decision for Aurora Energy’s CPP application has only recently closed.
“The first step is register your interest on the website, if you’d like to be considered for purchasing one of these fantastic properties,” Scott adds.
“We will be reviewing all of these submissions and no final decisions have yet been made.”
A further 15 units are going into Public Housing, a handful are being sold on the open market and the balance are being retained as affordable rentals or rent-to-buy units. The Secure Home units at Toru attracted an interest-free loan of $6.35 million from the Government last year, as part of its bid to increase alternative forms of home ownership around the country. Established to manage and deliver affordable housing solutions to residents who cannot afford it, QLCHT has several programmes in place to help low-moderate income households including public housing, assisted rental, rent-to-buy, and assisted ownership. It signed the contract for Toru three years ago and is now working on a 65-home development in Jopp Street, Arrowtown.

What Are Those Strange Moving Lights in The Night Sky? If you’ve, been out doing a walk after dusk recently and looked up on a clear night sky, you might have been surprised to see a train of bright lights moving across from one side to the other. Beautiful but slightly un-nerving as well if you didn’t know what they were. What’s going on?
The controversy comes in as people have raised concerns about the number of satellites SpaceX is launching. Today only about 2,000 active satellites orbit Earth; SpaceX will increase this by six times, and possibly by 21 times.
The lights appear in groups of up to 60 in a long straight line and are quite bright in our clear skies. The lights are actually satellites, launched by U.S. company SpaceX, which is run by serial entrepreneur Elon Musk. And they’re a bit controversial.
This poses a risk should satellites collide in orbit. If two satellites collide, they can explode and produce thousands of small pieces of debris. This happened in 2009 between a US and Russian satellite.
The satellites are part of something called Starlink and the aim is to launch thousands of them into orbit over time, to beam the internet to Earth from space. Each satellite has a large reflective solar panel which is what we are seeing as the panel is reflecting sunlight.
Another concern is that the satellites are very bright, Astronomers are concerned that the satellites may hampering their ability to study the universe. With many more satellites set to be launched, satellites could be constantly visible in the night sky from any location on the planet and potentially ruin the natural nature of the night sky and astronomy as we know it in the process.
The satellites are launched in batches of 60, with SpaceX aiming to launch roughly two lots every month. The satellites are launched, on the company’s reusable Falcon 9 rockets which release them into orbit about 290 kilometers above the surface of Earth. The satellites then use their onboard engines to raise their altitude up to their operational orbits of between 340 and 550 kilometers. This can take several months to do. During these months, the satellites can appear very visible in the night sky when they fly overhead because of their reflective surfaces. After dusk and before dawn, when the sun has dipped just below the horizon, the satellites reflect the Sun’s light back onto the ground, making them shine quite brightly. As they pass overhead, they appear like a bright train of lights as the satellites follow one after the other in orbit. Musk’s goal is to beam high-speed internet to every single location on Earth, from London to Antarctica. People will then pay a fee to access the service, with speeds estimated to be slower than fibre broadband but faster than existing satellite internet services.
So far SpaceX has launched 3% of its initial planned constellation of 12,000 satellites. But for the time being, you will likely continue to see these trains of satellites in the night sky. You can use websites like Find Starlink to see when they will be visible above us. This site uses Invercargill as the closest location to Queenstown.
