With thanks to the visionaries at the QTT and QMBC When former Prime Minister John Key started splashing cash on a bike trail networks across the country there was one group that was very quick to get organised and start building: The Queenstown Trails Trust (QTT). In my humble opinion the QTT is most successful such organisation in New Zealand. Before long we had connected Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown and Gibbston. 11 years on and the trail John Key imagined does not yet run from Bluff to Kaitaia. Not even close. The challenge of crossing private land the length of the country may keep that dream just that, a dream! But those challenges did not deter the QTT. Helped by typically generous Whakatipians and almost unanimous community support we have, 11 years on, a quite remarkable community asset. Now in a domestic tourism world, the true value of this asset is being realised. It is no surprise Kiwis love to bike. It is relatively cheap to rent a bike, free if you have your own and the ground you cover is quite simply breathtaking. So many local businesses feed off our trail network and that is more important now than ever before, to have at least one booming industry in 2020/21.

Never an organisation to rest on their heels, the QTT are pushing ahead to close the loop in the Wakatipu via Arthurs Point and out of our district to neighbours, Central Otago through the Kawarau Gorge. Then we come to the other reason the Queenstown Lakes is becoming such a biker’s drawcard, the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club. Like the QTT, in my opinion, they are the most successful mountain bike club in the country. Unlike the QTT, the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club have had to create amazing tracks on the smell of an oily rag. The volunteer effort, and skill of those volunteers is quite frankly phenomenal. The tourism reset we experienced in May 2020 was forced and unwelcome. However, the simple fact of the matter is, it happened and the way it happened will most likely never come again. Now our focus moves, and what better than way the gentle low carbon footprint of peddle and electric bikes. Add to that the feet on our walking tracks and we have a low impact tourism activity that will draw people to our district from other parts of New Zealand who then go on to spend on accommodation, food and beverage, retail and other tourism related activities. We have a lot to be thankful for, particularly the visionary and hardworking brains behind the Queenstown Trails Trust and Queenstown Mountain Bike Club. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

“A touring route has long been a vision for Central Otago communities and seeing that vision come to life is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when regions collaborate on a project,” he said in a statement. “When we look at other touring routes (the connecting Southern Scenic Route for example) it is clear there are economic, cultural and social benefits for the many communities along the journey. “Having an officially recognised and marketed touring route is a great way for us to inspire people to explore further and in more depth, those places and diverse authentic experiences the three partner regions have to offer. And we know that New Zealanders love a good road trip.” Part of the trail includes the Lake Dunstan Trail which connects the Clyde and Cromwell. This trail offers cyclists a 52km ride through unique and fascinating landscapes of the gorge from Bannockburn to the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club, near Clyde. Work started in June 2019 and is close to completion. The Lake Dunston trail is being funded by the Government, Central Lakes Trust and the Otago Community Trust.

Arts+Culture Alan Waters: Final Retrospective Exhibition
Art News
Alan Waters, best known for his unusual watercolour paintings, will hold a final retrospective exhibition in Queenstown this month. The Bannockburn-based artist has painted full time for more than 35 years, but due to the onset of Parkinson’s disease, he’ll no longer produce new works for exhibition. Alan’s artworks are held in private collections around the world, he’s won multiple awards and has been the subject of documentaries and magazine articles globally. He says neither of his parents were artistic, but he knew from an early age that he loved to create. “I wasn’t conscious of wanting to be an artist by age 5 or 4 or 10. But I had a moment. At Otago Polytechnic (Fine and Applied Arts, ’71 – ’73), I did a course and it didn’t help me, but what it did was set my sights on a career – though I never thought about it in that manner.” Alan worked as a furniture-maker and a toy designer – and even created highly collectable miniature furniture – before turning to watercolour painting. He says he loves watercolour for its “Transparency and flexibility. From light, right through to dark, dark, dark, dark. You’ve got more options than pastels or crayons or pencils.” His unusual technique is more bold and defined than the traditional, loose, watercolour painting style. But it’s his ‘element of the unexpected’ that sets his work apart from others’. Musical notes spill from a hand, a short-sighted farmer sends his dog to chase woolly clouds and a grasshopper plays the piano… Alan Water’s artworks are vivid, unusual and invite a second (and third) look. “Ideas will come to you,” he explains. “You leave the ideas alone, they’ll come to you when they’re ready.” He talks about finding an autumn leaf at a friend’s house in Quail Rise, Queenstown. “It was autumn and the wind was blowing the leaves everywhere they were pffft! all over the place. And suddenly, ding! I found this one leaf and I had an idea in my head.”

The resulting painting is a child swaddled inside a brown autumn leaf, the child represents his daughter. Another favourite painting is a still life depicting a bowl of lemons – a wedding gift to his wife, Chris, who loves the colour yellow. A wide range of Alan’s works will be for sale at the Retrospective Exhibition. Others will show how his work has changed over the years – from miniature furniture to small sculptures and then to large watercolours that are best enjoyed with a good sense of humour.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
A huge hurrah for Dick and Jilly Jardine with their extraordinarily generous gift of 900 hectares to our community. We are so lucky to have such great people in the Wakatipu who are making things so much better for us all in so many different ways. And a very sad farewell to the marvellous Terry Stevens who died this week with his equally marvellous wife, Susan by his side. Terry was on the Wakatipu Trails Trust for many years and set up the Grateful Citizens’ Society . Susan is no slouch either - she wasn’t at meetings about trails as much as doing the actual making of them. She pretty well built the Gibbston one with her own two hands and chainsaw. We all have to be grateful citizens for everything Terry and Susan have done, especially with the trails. On that very subject, if you want the Queenstown Trail to link up with Cromwell (it looks as if it would be the most stunning hike or bike), you’ve got almost no time to fill in the submission form but here’s the link to it QLDC RM200735_RC200286 - truly it needs to be in by December 3rd, and it’s very easy to fill in. Do please support it as it will be such a big bonus for the Queenstown Trails network. The funding and plans are all in place, but it needs the council consent. Gosh, I got a lot of feedback from grumpy ratepayers asking why they hadn’t been told about the Ladies’ Mile proposed developments open day. And why the open day was held so close to the last day of submission. And still so many grumbles about why we have to wait 20 working days to get information about other proposed developments. Surely they could be just ready for emailing to interested ratepayers. What on earth is achieved by making them wait? I asked around about how QLDC could share important information more easily - it seems everyone notices banners and signs for things like the Lake Hayes Show and the Arrowtown Autumn Festival. It’s all very well sending out flyers like Scuttlebutt, but there’s a lot of not very interesting or useful information in them and it’s easy to miss the important bits. The main criticism of the open days was that QLDC was only holding them to be able to tick the “YES WE CONSULTED WITH THE COMMUNITY “ box. Still, it was a good idea, and they should do more of them. If we don’t hear about them, we can’t possibly give them feedback My hearing has taken quite a bashing this week - my old dorm friends from boarding school (we were a tiny bit naughty and were kept in the same dorm together so that our dreadful behaviour didn’t contaminate other better behaved girls) were having one of our more or less annual get-togethers. If I tell you that one of them was Sue Douglas (the Douglases farmed Cave Farm at the top of Slopehill Road, and another was Steph Short (her parents owned Shorts Bookshop which took up the whole corner where Glassons and BNZ are now), you might understand why we were kept away from the other boardersthey were very naughty and led us totally astray (of course, I was an angelic girl). It is probably the last time these silly sixty year old women will be able to get together without needing incontinence pants - we laughed till we were nearly ill. I think the nice couple sitting next to us at a restaurant on Saturday night were horrified at the stories these strange old ladies were telling. Drunken shenanigans up the Skyline on a Sunday night, knickers left lying on someone’s drive… being young was SO much fun! And a van trip to Invercargill might not be everyone’s idea of a fun day out, but when you put a women’s book club into a van and send them on their merry way for a Christmas lunch at their fellow bookclub friend’s leather and knitting factory, it can only lead to more pantswetting hysteria . The trip down while everyone was sober was noisy and hysterical enough, but add a whole afternoon of champagne and wine and the din was deafening. I’m sure the cars that passed us would have been nearly deafened. I lost the toss and had to be the sober driver, so I really got the fun bit the next day, reminding them all of what they’d said and done - oh, and not having a hangover!!

queenstown@lonestar.co.nz PARKING PROBLEMS Did you know that parking in a bus stop or a taxi stand can’t include pulling over and stopping and not even getting out of the car. I have recently visited Queenstown and was given two tickets within an hour of each other for pulling over in an empty taxi stand and letting my passengers off. Never leaving the vehicle and leaving the park within two minutes, and then returning one hour later to pick them up from an empty bus stop. Once again, never leaving the vehicle, never turning the vehicle off and leaving the empty bus stop within two minutes. When you have young children, or children with intellectual disabilities (as is my case) dropping them and family members off close to the venue is very important. But apparently, stopping even for less than two minutes is worthy of a parking ticket. Very very
unhappy with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and their very ridiculous rules regarding parking, CCTV footage, and the inability to understand the struggles of parents of children with special needs. Unbelievably - we were also ticketed for parking outside the dairy - 3/4 of the vehicle inside the park, back wheels out of the park - another $60 please. I have indeed lodged a request to waive these parking tickets, but “Agent 158” (not even prepared to sign their name) says they have to be clear and consistent with their enforcement strategy and I still have to pay 2/3 tickets!!! One way to boost revenue.

Since government deregulation of the taxi industry, Queenstown’s large visitor population and busy CBD have attracted a number of unlicensed “taxis” which have caused some serious issues. We have had reports of passengers feeling threatened or unsafe, being grossly overcharged and a number of issues between the long standing companies and those new to the town and the industry. Aside from the obvious serious safety issues, these problems have the potential to cause massive reputational damage to our town which is reliant on tourism. In response, QLDC has developed a taxi permit system whereby a limited number of permits are issued and space on taxi stands is reserved solely for these permit holders. The revenue from the

Shotover traffic jams set to by Paul Taylor ease

Snap, Send and Solve with QLDC
“It won’t be news to anyone crossing the bridge over the last few days that traffic has backed up at peak times,” Noble says. “This appears to have been partly caused by retaining the right turn into Tucker Beach Road aimed at keeping the bus service operational on that route. “This has now been removed and as a result traffic flow is improved, albeit slowly as it is still an active construction site,” Mr Noble said. Work at the site began in February 2020 replacing around 320m of wastewater pipe and installing new water supply pipe along the downstream side of the Shotover Bridge. The $3m project aims to provide for current and future capacity as growth in the area continues. To minimise disruption, most of the work has been completed from the riverbed and, where not possible to operate from below the bridge, work has been completed overnight between 11pm and 5am. Mr Noble confirmed that permanent traffic management is set to end within the coming week as the project moves to a new phase. “Most people will appreciate the need for speed reductions for the safety of workers and people driving through the site, but no doubt everyone will be pleased to know that the project phase that has required permanent speed reductions is expected to finish next week and the speed limit will be returning to 80km/h. “There will still be short periods of time requiring temporary reductions as work continues away from the main traffic thoroughfare. “This is a timely reminder for those travelling into Queenstown over the Shotover Bridge to consider alternative transport options. “With improvements being made to public transport and active travel networks across our district, we are asking people to think about their options for carpooling, cycling and walking, or making use of the $2 Orbus service to help play their part in keeping everyone moving.”

Imagine being Matt and Chloe Nauschutz back in March this year. Having decided to resign their jobs in Wellington, selling all their belongings except what they could pack into an 8kg bag and heading off overseas for a year. 245 Job Seeker turn up for Jobs Fair but employers optimistic by Paul Taylor
“We’ve had people register with us who are using the opportunity and cheap accommodation to finally make their move to Queenstown.
By closing time at Queenstown’s job fair on Thursday, employers could have hired everyone who came through the door and still had positions to fill. There were 600 local jobs up for grabs across construction, hospitality, tourism and other sectors, and another 2000 for anyone interested in fruit picking for the summer. But, only 245 jobseekers turned up. For Queenstown recruiters and human resources managers, it’s a bittersweet issue. “This is much more positive work than the opposite,” says Gibbston Valley lodge and spa human resources manager Maggie Fea. “You want to be hiring rather than firing, so we’re just stoked we’re doing this work right now.” Fea had more than 30 people register their interest in the dozen or so positions at Gibbston Valley, which is ramping up for summer and to open a new woodfire pizza restaurant. “Hopefully, we can fill the positions, we’ve got a good number of names today.”
“From north of Auckland and around the regions, young fellas from Invercargill coming up, sick of doing the crutching with the sheep, who want a change. It’s nice to get people from all around the country.” There’s plenty of work on the horizon, though. “There’s some really hearty projects coming through, which is good to see, not just residential but big commercial builds and infrastructure jobs through town.” Another of the 34 companies at the fair was Remarkable Labour, who’ve taken it upon themselves to attract more Kiwis to Queenstown, by launching ‘Kiwi OE’. “It’s an awesome initiative to attract young Kiwis who would normally go overseas for an OE,” Fifield says. “The idea is to get them to come to Queenstown instead, try their hand at new industries, pick up some work. They’ve developed packages with guaranteed work, accommodation and incentives like discounts on activities. It’s really great what they’ve done.” German Natalie Cordon, 27, was one of the lucky migrants at the jobs fair on Thursday. She’s got residency through a partnership visa, so can stay and have her pick of work. “I actually have a job, but I need some more hours on the side,” she says. “This has been great - it’s good there are so many different companies here so I can see what’s out there.
Gibbston Valley, like many employers, recognised a few months ago that finding staff could be a problem. “The domestic market is more powerful than we thought it would be. “Queenstown relies on overseas workers and we don’t have any. Of the ones here, so many lost their jobs, had inflexible visas and had no choice but to go home. So there’s a shortage.” That shortage will become more acute should the trans-Tasman bubble eventually open, but businesses will still welcome it Fea says. “A big portion of our market is Aussies, so we’ll be stoked if we can get them back, and we’ll deal with the challenges that brings later.” Despite the competition for staff, there was a good vibe in the room on Thursday, and Queenstown Lakes District Council economic development advisor Sharon Fifield says employers want the council to hold another jobs fair in January. “They are really appreciating the opportunity, because they have vacancies they just can’t fill,” Fifield says. “There’s a good range of positions across several industries and it’s also given the job seekers coming through a bit of hope, and the opportunity to talk to employers directly. “They’ve been very positive on their way out.” Central Government’s contention is that Kiwis should fill the positions available, in a post-Covid economy, hence its reluctance to relax visa regulations. Tradestaff senior recruitment consultant Claire Pattinson says some Kiwis are moving to Queenstown for work.
“I like tourism, so I’ll go and see AJ Hackett and Millbrook, but actually Bunnings was good as well. There are lots of options.”

New data privacy rules are coming in NZ — businesses and other organisations will have to lift their games Most people these days are aware that what they share online is both valuable and vulnerable. Data privacy has become a major concern for consumers and corporations alike. The issue will come to a head when New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020 comes into force on December 1. The legislation replaces and updates the 1993 act. Its key purpose is to promote people’s confidence that their personal data and information are secure and will be treated properly. The act makes notification of privacy breaches mandatory. Organisations receiving and collecting data will now have to report any privacy breach they believe has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm. Those organisations can also be issued with compliance notices that require them to do something, or stop doing something, in order to comply with the law. It will be in their interests to quickly adapt to the new regulations — not just legally, but also commercially. Our research suggests building consumer trust is critical for organisations that require customers to share information with them online. However, a recent survey commissioned by global technology company Masergy revealed 70% of business leaders find data security challenging. Ethics must keep pace This is a concern in a technologically driven business environment. The collection and analysis of consumer data are now integral to many industries. The high degree of personalisation and convenience this allows gives many businesses their competitive advantage. Because of this, data analytics will be among the most important technology investments for New Zealand companies over the next 12 months. With COVID-19 driving increased e-commerce and digital activity, we can expect significant increases in consumer data being exchanged online.
Putting customer concerns first There are several measures we think will help organisations build this trust and comply with the law: • being aware of the regulations, including the GDPR and the mandatory data breach reporting provisions in New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020, as well as other data protection laws that may apply when operating a business internationally • using data experts to design effective governance frameworks that ensure data security and protection • emphasising transparency — organisations should be able to demonstrate to consumers how their data may be used and the specific benefits they can expect from the data disclosures they make • empowering customers — organisations must develop data strategies that will place customers in control of the information they decide to share, while demonstrating how information may be used to benefit others • promoting “privacy by design” approaches that allow customers to match their data-sharing preferences with their privacy level preferences. The Privacy Act 2020 and the GDPR framework will force organisations to recognise the value of their data and be more aware of the growing legal thresholds they need to meet. But the penalties and reputational risks of noncompliance should not obscure the clear commercial benefits of voluntarily adopting ethical, customer-first business practices. Anca C. At the same time, the fast pace of technological transformation risks important ethical considerations about data ethics and data governance being overlooked. As the recent Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma highlighted, the growth of social media, e-commerce and online data surveillance (sometimes known as “dataveillance”) has built a huge system of information accumulation. This enables organisations to anticipate and change consumer behaviours to drive revenue and gain market control. How they responsibly govern themselves will only become more important. New Zealand has a good record Internationally, the European Union’s 2018 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has had a significant impact on international data flows well beyond the EU’s own borders. GDPR allows the transfer of personal data between countries only if adequate data protection is guaranteed. The level of data protection has to be demonstrated at country level, and the EU has certified New Zealand as “providing adequate protection” of privacy. This is good news, but organisations will need to ensure their approach to privacy shifts from “are we compliant?” to “are we compliant and doing the right thing?”

Last Thursday, 34 employers attended the Central Lakes Jobs Fair at Queenstown Memorial Centre, including Gibbston Valley, Millbrook, Bunnings, Cook Brothers, Tradestaff, Real Journeys and Accor hotels group.
“I have engaged with several Ministers in Government, asking them for that visa relaxation, as recently as the day of the jobs fair, and will continue to agitate in that regard.”
There were more than 600 resort jobs up for grabs, plus another 2000 in horticulture. But only 245 people came through the door looking for work. About 60% were Kiwis or residents, while the rest were migrant workers. Boult says the way to solve the staff shortage is for Government to relax visa restrictions and extend them for those already in NZ. “It’s ridiculous that we have a thousand migrant workers looking for a job and we’ve got about a thousand jobs available across the district. “Let’s just match them up. That’s not to say we back away at all from Kiwis first, it
Boult believes new Tourism Minister Stuart Nash, who visited Queenstown earlier this month, understands the issue and is generally supportive of the council’s stance. There’s no firm figure on the number of job losses in the district due to Covid-19. But, while there has likely been a couple of thousand, the worst-case scenario predicted by Infometrics economists back in May, in a study for council, has so far failed to materialise. It forecast unemployment could reach 18.5% by March 2021 due to the impact of Covid-19, with a loss of 7,900 jobs. “We’re better off because that report was on the basis of a ‘do nothing’ scenario, and the last thing we did was do nothing,” Boult
says. “Council, DQ, Lake Wanaka Tourism, the Chambers, businesses and the community all got stuck in, rolled up their sleeves and did the best they possibly could in very difficult circumstances. “That produced a better outcome than we figured we would have. That said, we need to take into account a large number of the migrant workforce have left the district. Obviously, that’s not reflected in the unemployment figures.” It’s estimated some 1500 migrant workers have left the district. There were 479 Kiwis receiving jobseekers’ benefit in Queenstown Lakes in September. That’s a huge increase from just 29 people in February, before the borders closed, but has remained relatively steady through the pandemic. The report also assumed the construction industry and house prices would take a big hit, but they remain buoyant. And it expected a depressed domestic tourism market. The reverse is true, so far, with $151m spent locally in September alone.

Bob and Simon Berry of Whitestone Cheese
When the COVID-19 lockdown kicked in, Whitestone Cheese in Oamaru lost over 40% of its business overnight with the closure of the nation’s restaurants, hotels and cafes. The factory was deemed an essential service and would continue manufacturing even though 30% of its staff could not work due to family commitments at home. For Bob and Simon Berry, the father son duo who head Whitestone, the outlook was grim and it was worse for their food service customers and distributors who had to close down and were unable to claim insurance for their perishable stock, which was all about to be lost. The Berry’s and their team determined the best way forward was to support these businesses by accepting and crediting all returns. This situation was compounded by the considerable stock on hand already at the factory, with a short shelf life ranging from only 2 to 6 weeks. They urgently needed a plan to convert this stock into cash and quickly, so donning their thinking hats again, they immediately geared up their online shop and database, upgraded their track and trace courier service and boosted their dispatch team. Following a mailout to their entire database, the plan immediately started to bear fruit with over 100 orders appearing the next day from their loyal supporters, stuck in their lockdown bubbles and happy to receive full wheels of their favorite cheese delivered to their door. Social media posts helped spread the word and slowly but surely the entire stock was cleared. Under lock down supermarket sales strengthened as kiwis dined at home 7 days a week boosted by a strong “buy local / buy NZ” sentiment which greatly assisted Whitestone, along with many NZ manufacturers through those difficult times. Their severely reduced cheese making team also managed to rise to the challenge under very trying circumstances and the bleak Covid-19 fallout was slowly turned around.
AVERAGE MONTHLY SPEND BY DOMESTIC TOURISTS Based on Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates, each domestic tourist spent on average $415 in the four months July-Sept 2020, 34% more than 2019. Overall, domestic tourists spent 63% ($253m) more than this same period last year. This only goes part way to fill the -$559m loss of international tourist spending.
Today their food service business is slowly recovering and with strong retail business, plus their vastly increased on-line sales the cheese factory has returned to full production. On reflection Bob says “Often in adversity lies opportunity and I’m proud of our team and how they found a way to trade out of this crisis.”

Business Enterprise - Go Local Category – App Start Up
Nigel Hobbs is an entrepreneur – it’s in his blood and he probably has AJ Hackett to thank for that. As his business world collapsed around him at the start of COVID, he was both like the rest of us as his anxiety levels went through the roof and not like us at all,when he started planning his next venture. Not till COVID struck did it occur to him just how exposed to the International visitor market he had become. With Altitude Tours and Black NZ both his ventures, suddenly without any income, he started thinking about diversification. Nigel may as well be a born and bred local. Queenstown has been part of his life since he was 8, coming up from Dunedin every chance he could. He has always known that this would be his place to return to. From the age of 18 in 1997 until 2004 he worked at AJ Hackett and did everything aside from drive the buses. With a degree in Commerce and Marketing he had a set of skills and can-do attitude that management at AJ Hackett’s from AJ himself down, recognised and utilised. Working closely with AJ provided the perfect training environment for what was to come in 2020. Pressure, planning, business set up and the agility to build, create and pivot businesses quickly. Helping to set up new sites internationally in locations as diverse as Russia and Singapore tested his experience and through that time he was also setting up his own businesses back home. Everything Travel is established then and now it’s one of NZ’s biggest locally owned online travel businesses as was Altitude Tours and his purchase of luxury tour operator Black NZ. Fast forward to March 2020 and COVID!! Nigel had was in big Asset Debt which scared the bejesus out of him. Fear is a great motivator and it dawned on him that he needed to diversify away from a tourism only industry and Go Local was born. Go Local is NZ’s fastest growing business listing platform App. It fills a yawning need where local businesses can be found easily by locals. Its been quite a journey already its quite a different product now than what he originally envisioned back in March. The core tenant however still holds true. Go Local is where local businesses can easily be discovered. The premise is built on answering the next question every time a decision is made; Where should we go? Who’s good? What’s nearby? During Lockdown it was obvious when Nigel searched online that small and medium businesses couldn’t be found through the bombardment of ads, blogs and large companies skewing the directory field in the pay to play world of online where local
businesses don’t have the resources to compete. Nigel believes an App is a better platform solution than a website as its easier to control navigation, change the structure and experience based on user feedback and there are some innate tools available such as notifications that add value to an app. The first iteration was created in 3 weeks over lockdown. Together with a friend who was stuck in Italy ‘we were able to work night and day with development and changes being made across time zones. Because we were in lockdown, we were super productive’. ‘In the 4 months since, the philosophy of what we are building remains the same but how we get there is radically different’ explains Hobbs. For example, it became really clear from business feedback that we would fail if we were predominantly a deal platform. The offering needed to be more substantive and as a result while deals will always be part of the offering it’s a small part. Nigel also took advantage of the Government regional partnership network to get some professional help and local creative agency Whitehall Mitchell went out and did some research which led to further innovation on the platform and resulted in a significantly strengthened search function so fun, excitement and discovery are now key components. Whitehall Mitchell also discovered that ‘decision fatigue’ has become a growing ‘thing.’ ‘People are sick of making decisions and so we are
incorporated ‘surprise me’ a fun element where shaking the phone will deliver a random option. Shake it again and an other option’. ‘Go Local is a product I’m even more confident about today than when I first dreamt about it in March’ says Nigel. It’s still in its start up phase and every night he ends the day both excited about its potential and also terrified that it might be a disaster. ‘I’ve had to swallow my pride many times in the last six months and step back when its not working the way it supposed to’. At one point we had to create the fastest rebrand in the world when in 3 weeks we pivoted to a questions-based platform rather than a directory, but it worked. Businesses got it and our on boarding strike rate has returned. As our confidence improves our goal of 1,000 Southern Lakes businesses looks achievable which will make Go Local the fastest growing and biggest directory of business in the region. At that point we will broaden and redeploy our resources to expansion. We decided on Auckland which is both scary and logical because Auckland also feed our Southern Lakes area with visitors. Being successful in the largest market will also quickly achieve our aim to have 10 thousand businesses on board by the end of 2021.

Lakeview to revitalize Queenstown’s heart
This is the story of placemaking. In 10 years’ time, Queenstown is going look very different and the CBD will have expanded, particularly to the west due to the $1 billion Lakeview development. Lakeview will sit beneath Ben Lomond, with buildings covering 3 hectares of the 10ha former campground, motel and cabins site. When completed, it will shift Queenstown’s property dynamic and rearrange our behaviour. Accommodating a population of over 1,500 in a medium-density mixed-use community, Lakeview will be within 300 meters of the CBD. Paul Burnaby, NZ General Manager and local lead for Melbourne-based developer Ninety Four Feet, believes it will support a revived downtown. “Downtown will expand with the bypass and the developments on Hay and Man Streets, which backs onto the entrance to Lakeview. Isle Street will extend through Lakeview making for a natural progression”, he says.
Burnaby has steered the project through all its phases including a hotly-contested pitch process, which saw it win preferred bidder status against dozens of competitive bids from some of the largest and well-known developers. The masterplan is now complete and Burnaby’s keen to show it to locals. Ninety Four Feet has recently opened a pop-up community information space in Beach Street until Christmas, where Burnaby will walk people through the plans, models and a video. “Ninety Four Feet’s early design decisions are about making Lakeview exceptional, not just big”. Paul’s a Motueka lad originally. He studied engineering culminating in a masters at Stanford in the US on a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. His specialty focused on how to develop large projects sustainably. He returned home for a role with BNZ and then NZ Trade and Enterprise, where
he developed and ran the successful ‘Project Palace’ national initiative to drive investment into new hotels. It was at this time he came across Ninety Four Feet from Melbourne. Their philosophy of teamwork, innovation, sustainability and commitment to listen in order to create long-term community value drew him to jump ship to grow and run their NZ operation. When QLDC went to market with the Request for Proposal, Paul knew the opportunity to work on such a masterplan needed serious consideration. This would be a signature development for the company, council, and Queenstown’s future. It will add to the community space in an enhanced town centre, restoring the environment with native flora and fauna to something akin to what was here over 100 years ago through various reserves and a public plaza. As a walkable and connected neighbourhood
The masterplan is designed to create a vibrant neighbourhood a short walk from the town centre unlocking a range of housing and accommodation options, while providing new public spaces and recreation areas. It has been designed to feel local and connected. It will be its own village where people live while being complementary to the CBD. While construction will commence in 2023 and the total plan is over 10 years away from completion, the impact will be felt well before that time. In the next two years there is plenty happening as council clears the site and installs the necessary infrastructure to unlock the site’s development potential.

Queenstown Kiwi Harvest is launching its inaugural Christmas Campaign, Kirihimete Koha (Christmas Gift) The campaign is the first time Kiwi Harvest has attempted to engage directly with households and non-food related businesses about the food struggles of many in our community following COVID19, particularly at Christmas time. Every Christmas churches and community organisations see a surge in individuals and families who want to participate in a Christmas meal. Many Kiwis and whānau who only occasionally use food support agencies throughout the year will choose to attend a community Christmas meal. Already this year, they have seen a surge in demand for food parcels and community meals in the wake of COVID19 with increases of 150% in some areas - and threre is no doubt this demand will continue to grow.
