Why a real estate company sponsors the Queenstown Marathon? The New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon is fast approaching and already we can feel the excitement amongst our community; the out-of-towners are starting to arrive for extended holidays, the locals are training on the trails and the businesses are bracing for a booming weekend on November 21-22. New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty is the title partner of the worldrenowned event therefore I’m often asked the question: why would a real estate agency sponsor a running race? For us, the answer is twofold. Not only does the marathon, a prestigious and well-organised event, align with our brand values, but the multitude of benefits this one outstanding event brings to the Southern Lakes – our founding region – is phenomenal. The Queenstown Marathon weekend is Queenstown’s second-busiest weekend after New Year’s Eve. More than 10,000 runners are expected to race in either the full, half or 10km races. Most of these people are New Zealanders, visiting us from regions such as Canterbury, Otago and Auckland. All of these people come to Queenstown to run the race, enjoy the cafes, restaurants and bars, do some shopping, explore our scenery and, ultimately, leave on a high. This is fantastic not only for our businesses but for our community and our morale, particularly after a tumultuous 2020.
Wayne Foley, above, will be one of 10,00 taking part in Saturday’s marathon festival. Foley is chairman of the WHS Foundation and together with teachers and students from the High School hopes to raise much needed funds for the Foundation.
Even though there is obviously a drop in international athlete participation (approximately 13% of athletes are entered this year, versus an average of 25% international athletes), the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon is expected to inject nearly $8 million into the local economy this year. That is a remarkable achievement for one standalone event, particularly at a time where many sporting events around the world are either cancelled or significantly challenged by Covid-19. In terms of our own involvement, we have more than 40 staff members and licensees from around NZ coordinating and competing in the event. I am tremendously proud of our team who are continually striving to live our values not just in their careers but in their everyday lives. As a company that was founded in the outdoor playground of Queenstown, being active – as well as general health and wellbeing – is important to us. We live here because of the incredible lifestyle that this corner of the world affords and it’s great to see the NZSIR team taking advantage of that. If you are participating in the event – either as a runner or spectator, or as part of the wonderful volunteer crew – please come and say “hello”. We’ll be at the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty stretch tent at the finish line, hopefully celebrating a successful effort. Best of luck to all the athletes. Queenstown has scored significant wins at the 27th Annual World Travel Awards, winning three of the major awards in the Oceania section and four out of eight titles in the New Zealand section. Queenstown has taken out the title of Oceania’s Leading City Destination beating out Auckland, Cairns, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Prominent Queenstown businesses have also had major wins at the 2020 event.

Local Housing Market soars!! 140 properties sold in October

Queenstown’s housing market continues to defy post-Covid expectations - with sales up an astonishing 47% on October last year. Last month, 140 residential properties were sold in the Queenstown Lakes District, compared with 95 in October 2019, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand monthly stats. The median house price also increased, up 7.4% year-on-year to $1,010,000. REINZ regional director Gail Hudson says: “Buyer enquiry is strong across the price brackets, but particularly in the $750,000+ bracket. “There is a lot of interest from out of town buyers and from international Kiwi buyers looking to return home.” Hudson says first-time home buyers are continuing to struggle.

Median house prices across New Zealand increased by 19.8% from $605,000 in October 2019 to a new record median high of $725,000 in October 2020. They were up from $689,000 in September this year, a 5.2% lift. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand announced it is considering reinstating loan-to-value mortgage ratios in March, particularly for investors. LVRs were removed post-Covid for 12 months to Mayu, but REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell says she wouldn’t be surprised if the Reserve Bank goes ahead with its proposal to reinstate them earlier “given the price rises we’ve seen over the past few months”

QLDC Chief Executive reappointed for a further five years by Paul Taylor Queenstown councillors have re-appointed Mike Theelen as the council’s chief executive, effective from February 2021. Theelen, who became council boss back in February 2016, was given another five years in the role after a mandatory recruitment process. Theelen earns $356,619 a year. Mayor Jim Boult said the outcome of a robust recruitment process ensures consistency and strong leadership at a time of change and uncertainty in the community. “Not only was Mr Theelen the strongest candidate, his reappointment gives the organisation stability and continuity at a time when none of us can predict how the effects of COVID-19 will continue to impact our district and what that means for QLDC. “Mr Theelen has created a strong, high performing management team and leads the can-do culture that the Council needs in both good times and bad. “He has proven he and his team can deliver and I am confident that the operational management of Council remains in exceptional hands for the next five years. “It only remains for me, on behalf of myself and fellow elected members, to offer our sincere congratulations to Mr Theelen on his reappointment.” Councillors made the decision in a public excluded session at the end of the 29 October meeting of Full Council.

It found Sibley was aware asbestos had been detected in the house, but did not have the necessary licence to remove it. “Friable asbestos is an extremely dangerous material which poses health risks such as lung disease or even cancer when disturbed,” Birse says. “WorkSafe does not take these matters lightly. “Sibley did not conduct a risk assessment or have an asbestos removal control plan around the removal of the friable asbestos. “He also failed to ensure he or his workers had correct personal protective equipment when removing the ceiling tiles. It is fair to say he exposed his workers to asbestos fibres. “This was a completely botched asbestos removal job which put workers at risk.”

What an exhausting week - it’s been nonstop culture, birthdays, and so many brilliant things happening in the Wakatipu. It started with a massive panic trying to get books for the Queenstown Writers Festival - the two biggest book distributors don’t have warehouses in NZ and the books were all sitting stuck on a boat somewhere between here and Australia. The local reps managed to get all the copies available in bookshops around the country sent here - PHEW! Massive congrats to Tanya Surrey, Chris Fitzpatrick and Bethany Rogers for putting on such a great festival - loads of the events were sellouts, Tom Scott was a hero of mine when I was young as he was so good at annoying Rob Muldoon with his cartoons. Witi Ihimaera made us all cry as his talk was so moving and as for the singing… there’s a reason he’s so adored. And gracious, gorgeous Dame Fiona Kidman is a national treasure. Funny to think she was known as “Filthy Fiona” for the sexy bits in her books.

The next day was a cocktail party at Ray and Janet Key’s house - we were invited to hear how great the Greatest Needs Fund proved to be in the community. Leaders from several groups talked about the essential help it provided to so many people when Covid struck and there were migrants who needed to get home, and locals who needed food and mental health help and any number of essential services. If any of you don’t know about the Wakatipu Community Foundation, do look it up. The impossibly energetic Jennifer Belmont established it, and it makes it very easy for local groups to set up under its umbrella. If you are planning to die one day, (now that I’m 60, I’m starting to think about it) and want to give a gift to this wonderful Wakatipu, there’s something in there for you to choose. Tuesday was a surprise birthday lunch at the new and fab Gibbston Valley Lodge for Kristen Holzmann, yet another great American now living here who is showing us easy and fun philanthropy can be. She invited her friend Carrie Morgridge to NZ earlier this year. Wednesday was my Dad’s 89th birthday - he really is my hero, and he’s been it since 1960. His birthday is on Armistice Day, and I felt so proud walking up to the monument in Arrowtown with him, all his service and bravery medals polished blindingly brightly. Bagpipes, sunshine, bugles and our mountains - there’s just nothing lovelier. At night we had the big vote at the Impact100 dinner. 5 community groups had made it to the final selection - Baby Box, Living Options, Wastebusters, Turn Up the Music and St John Ambulance. They all made compelling presentations, but the gigantic $100,000 cheque went to Living Options who help people with disabilities. Alison Wildey, a nurse, who runs it with her daughter Olivia, said that helping people with disabilities isn’t work for her, it’s just something she loves doing. Now THAT made me cry!! The other four groups went home with $5000 each. Impact100 is a really terrific group to belong to. It’s only for women, but men can donate $1000 and nominate a woman they want to join. Thursday was no quieter - Kirsty MacTaggart turned 50. Now that she is an old lady, she decided to have an afternoon tea party in her garden, as apparently that’s what old ladies do. Kirsty and her husband Justin, and son Rory (7) have oodles of energy - not only have they done a beautiful restoration job of the Threepwood Homestead and gardens, but they’ve planted masses of natives along the Lake Hayes Track and do a huge amount of the pest eradication programme work there. Fellow Scot and new local Katie Targett-Adams, came along to surprise Kirsty with an a capella rendition of “Flower of Scotland” - she really has the voice of an angel. At night, the Athenaeum Hall was sold out with lucky locals getting to hear Simon O’Neill, one of the world’s greatest tenors giving us a concert accompanied by his former professor from Otago University. There are some very good things happening because of COVID and this was certainly one of them. As well as his singing, we got to hear his stories about his life and VERY naughty stories about the music world. Poor Schumann died at 32 of syphilis and I’m still wondering how he managed to fit a sex life in, given that he wrote over 600 songs. Can you even write music while attending to a poxy lover? He must have been an excellent multitasker.

Don’t think you’ll ever get into running? Think again. Welsh woman Menna Evans didn’t consider herself ‘a runner’ until two-and-a-half years ago, when the death of her father inspired her to tackle John O’Groats to Lands End (J.o.G.L.E.) – a run spanning the length of Britain. “About 9 years ago, at his retirement party, my dad asked me if I’d like to walk John O’Groats to Lands End with him. I didn’t even know it was a thing, but I said, Yeah! Great! I wasn’t a runner back then, so walking it together was a great idea. “But then, his health decreased and six years later, he passed away. I vowed to do it in his memory, but rather than walk it, I decided to run it.” She’d done a marathon “years and years before”, but had never attempted anything like an ultra run. One of the reasons Menna chose to run, rather than walk, was a very practical one: as a single mum, she needed to think about how much time she could realistically spend away from her son. After successfully tackling J.o.G.L.E., she got the ultra running bug and set her sights on the length of New Zealand – a 2,000km (ish) road run. Menna isn’t the first to attempt the feat. Running legend Siggy Bauer still holds the record for the fastest time, completing it in 18 days and 9 hours back in 1975. Australian
Lucy Clarke recently beat the woman’s record for the fastest trail run across New Zealand – completing the 3,000km Te Araroa trail in just 66 days, seven hours and eight minutes. Menna was hoping to complete the road run in 40 days, but smashed her expectations and ran it in just 36 days. She ran for seven to ten hours each day, completing 55 – 60 kilometres. But she says it’s as much about setting an example to her son, and managing mental health, as it is attempting records. Her son followed along with Menna’s mother in a campervan for two weeks and Menna says “it was really important that he was with me.” “I want to inspire him as he grows up, not to do something crazy, but to travel, have adventures and work towards something and go for it! I hope he draws on that in his memories of me doing it.” Raising awareness of mental health was another goal – Menna dedicated the run to her late cousin Ian Davies and says that she has also suffered from anxiety and depression. Shortly before her father died, Menna’s husband left her, leaving her with their then 18-month-old son (“and all the bills”). “It was really difficult for me. I got really, really low… but I stumbled into running and it’s really helped me with mental health issues.
“I’m rubbish at sitting still so meditating is not for me. There’s something about running; the rhythm, the feet hitting the ground, breathing, being outside… it works for me and it got me through depression and although I still suffer from anxiety, running helps to balance me. “So I’m an advocate for getting out there. I’ve met so many amazing people and had so many amazing adventures.” Variable weather and “trucks, trucks and more trucks” were part of her road running challenge, but she says that the key to getting through physical challenges is positivity. “You need good music – it’s got to be upbeat! I like 90s, hip hop and anything that can give me a bit of a groove while running. Or anything that can give me a laugh – you’ve got to have a good sense of humour. Social media really helped too. When I was feeling low I’d look at my phone for ten minutes and there were so many supportive messages which made me think: how can I not finish, with support like that? “In the grand scheme of things, it’s nothing. The run went in a flash, even though at the time it felt as though it would never end. But you have to grasp hold of that moment and enjoy it, and remember that moment is miniscule compared to the rest of your life.”

Central Motor Speedway Celebrates Memory of Founder, Ron Spriggs By Ross Lindsay This Saturday’s meeting at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell celebrates the memory of Ron Spriggs, the speedways founder. As with so many community visionary’s, Ron was a stand-out of what one man can achieve. Back in the late 1970’s, Ron was a panel beater, speedway driver and all-round fan. He felt the region lacked family entertainment, namely a speedway. His search for a suitable central location took him to councilowned marginal land off Cromwell’s Sandflat Road that offered a natural amphitheatre embankment. The council, eager for an attraction that would bring people to the newly created Lake Dunstan and to a pretty much relocated Cromwell, supported Ron’s proposal granting him a long-term lease. With support from his partner Valerie and willing helpers, ‘Golden Central Speedway’, was ready to host its first meeting over Christmas 1980. Cars were backed up well into the Kawarau Gorge, but terrible weather meant a last-minute postponement of that inaugural meeting. The winds were so fierce that the porta loos blew over, including one with a man in it. Ron ran the speedway for 11 years until terminal illness forced him from active involvement. He died in March, 1996 just days shy of his 54th birthday. The 2020/21 Ron Spriggs Memorial Meeting will feature all the favourites, with big fields of sprint cars, six shooters, super saloons, production’s and youth ministocks all racing for the honour of taking home the Ron Spriggs trophy for their class. Everyone is invited to call into the clubrooms for a nostalgic trip to the Ron Spriggs era via a large photo and article display board. When I was 11 the deputy headmistress at school told me that I couldn’t possibly be a vet. Only the cleverest, most academic pupils could get into veterinary school and only the best and brightest of those would actually qualify. She made it quite clear that I was not going to be one of them. And I believed her.
Beliefs don’t reflect the objective truth, they just feel like they do, so if we’re going to believe something, let’s choose to believe something empowering. Fortunately, using NLP, we can extract our limiting beliefs and install more positive ones.
Limiting beliefs like these can be very easily installed into a young person’s psyche. Children’s conscious minds aren’t fully formed until the age of 7, so there’s no “gatekeeper” to repel limiting and unhelpful beliefs.
That sounds simple enough, but one of the trickiest things is trying to figure out just what our limiting beliefs are.
Fortunately, it worked out for me, when I stumbled into my career with the Estée Lauder. I quickly flourished and rose through the ranks and that was when I began to realise that this idea that I was rubbish and wasn’t very bright, just wasn’t true!
They’re often so ingrained that we’re just not aware of them at all, because they run unconsciously, below the radar.
I firmly believe that the deputy head was wrong to say what she said. She could have said, “If you really, passionately want something, and you’re prepared to put whatever time and effort is needed into it, even if it’s challenging and difficult, anything’s possible.” As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” Getting rid of that limiting belief was one of the most liberating and empowering things I’ve ever done. So, it’s really important to root out and identify any limiting beliefs that may be getting in your way and holding you back.
What can we do about limit beliefs? Firstly, understand that our beliefs, aren’t the truth. They’re just things we think. They feel real to us. Other people have different beliefs, which feel real to them. None of these beliefs are objectively true. If I were to ask you to tell me what you believe about yourself, and then I asked your family and friends what their beliefs about you are, chances are there would be quite a few differences. Different people simply believe different things. Limiting beliefs are what you believe about yourself that limit your abilities,. Sometimes we’re aware of these negative beliefs, while at other times we’re not because they’re unconscious. Limitations are actually a product of the mind. In reality, there are no limitations on a person. Anything can be done if you put your mind to it. The unconscious mind’s job is to support our beliefs, whatever they might be. When a belief is installed (often by the age of five or six) the unconscious mind doesn’t evaluate it. It accepts that it’s true then goes about looking for evidence to support that belief. The unconscious mind is exceptionally good at finding evidence, whatever our belief happens to be. If you believe that you’re hopeless at math’s, you’ll only notice the times when you make mistakes, calculate the wrong change in a shop etc. All the times that you math calculations work perfectly well, will go completely unnoticed. This is because they don’t support your belief that you’re hopeless in this aspect of life. On the other hand, if you believe you’re good at math’s, then you can experience exactly the same things, but now you’ll notice how often you get things right. The times you run into difficulties or make mistakes will just be seen as uncharacteristic slipups and unimportant.
Beliefs are installed before the age of 7 and they are gaining more power as the years go by. Many overachievers are running a core limiting belief, they achieve to try and disprove the limiting belief, yet this is a short term fix, it’s not long before they are achieving again to get their ‘fix.’ People pleasing is another sign, generally at the costs of their own happiness, if you are a people pleaser then you are generally looking for external gratification to prove you are good enough, smart enough or a good person, again this is short lived, the fix is needed again so more people pleasing continues at the costs of your happiness or those people who you should be really pleasing, your loved ones.
Zapping limiting beliefs A session with a good coach or Neural CoderTM could soon unearth the key negative beliefs you hold, however with a little focus you can usually find the major ones you need to work on yourself. Take some time to think about and listen to the phrases you often say to or about yourself when things don’t go quite to plan. Is “I’m such an idiot!”, “why do I always end up in a mess like this?”, “I’m useless!” or “Why can’t I do anything right?” one of your most frequent sayings? Unconscious language patterns are often direct pointers to underlying beliefs that we’re stupid or useless and nothing we do is ever going to be right, or that we don’t deserve to be happy. A great way of noticing this is to observe yourself for a week. Notice what you say to yourself and watch what you do. Ask yourself, “What do I believe about myself that allows me to say this, or do this?” Notice what comes up for you. Just being aware of what might be running will allow you to observe it, this way it will lose its power. You will create a pattern interrupt and disrupt the coding that runs automatically by obversevive your thoughts, this will help in the short term and give you a break from the limiting belief. You will also be able to see it for what it is and how often it shows up. FOODIE “They Are Us” but Who Are They and What Do They Believe? The 9/11 New York City Twin Towers attack was the trigger for Anjum Rahman’s work as a political and human rights activist. “I could see that our world was changing and I didn’t want my kids to grow up in fear or to feel ashamed of who they were.” Rahman has spent the two decades since speaking up about discrimination against Muslim and other communities and the need for an inclusive society. In 2019, she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to ethnic communities and women and shortlisted for New Zealander of the Year. She will be keynote speaker at Catalyst Trust’s “They Are Us” but Who Are They and What Do They Believe? event in Queenstown on Friday, November 27. “They are Us” was the bold claim made in the wake of the Christchurch mosque massacres of March 15, 2019. But, is this picture of inclusiveness real and how much do non-Muslim Kiwis know about what Muslims believe? These are some of the questions for Catalyst Trust’s in-depth discussion with Ms Rahman and Queenstown’s new Imam Shukri bin Halim. The evening will also include a meal hosted by our local Queenstown Muslim community, who will share their perspectives of what it is like to be Muslim in Queenstown. In the wake of the horrific attacks, people were asking what they could do, Hamilton-based Rahman said. Two months later, she launched the Inclusive Aotearoa Collective Tāhono, a communityled initiative to combat discrimination and build on work already being done. Through the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand, Rahman had for years been warning the government of the “rising temperature” of white supremacy and Islamophobia in New Zealand. She says the mosque attacks were preventable if their warnings had been heeded. They were ignored. Rahman says public policy should focus on prevention of violent extremism, more than countering it through surveillance. “Preventing violent extremism requires empowering communities, fostering belonging, valuing and celebrating difference.” Catalyst Trust has organised this event as an opportunity to create better links and understanding in our Queenstown community, and we welcome you to join us. Mou Waho – Lake Wanaka It’s an unmissable thing to do and rarely do you get to boast you have been to a ‘lake within a lake’. Wanaka is only an hour across the Crown Range and the experience is more relaxed and less frenetic, somehow. To get to Mou Waho (which means Outer Island) take a regular tour which comes with a guide for the island tour. The trip heads across the glorious Lake Wanaka past Ruby Island and Mou Tapu island, to one of the more storied islands, While on the cruise take a look at the stunning properties that are visible from the lake but that you can’t see from the bike paths or on the road. We can all dream and you realise there is some serious money in Wanaka. Back in the 19th Century Mou Waho was a boat building hub for the lake trade. The remnants of the wharf and old homestead can still be seen. Fire ravaged the island but since then island has been replanted in native bush and its also a predatory free sanctuary. On the island you are bound to stumble across the rare buff weka as well as a very robust bird life. Of course you are there for the highlight which is the ‘lake within a lake.’ The ice age glacially scoured out the miniature lake which is called Arethusa Pool (earlier named Moutimu by Māori, then Paradise Lake) in the middle of the island which is 150 m above lake level. On your return to the mainland, you might like to consider some refreshments at the Edgewater. They the freshly baked scones, they are delicious.

New Zealand needs a ‘traffic light’ system to stop COVID-19 creeping in at the border Following the sixth COVID-19 incursion in three months, New Zealand needs to shift from a one-size-fits-all strategy to a risk-based approach to border management. Two staff have recently tested positive after coming into contact with international seafarers in the course of their duties at a managed isolation facility in Christchurch, where 31 mariners with COVID-19 remain in quarantine. Mandatory testing of international mariners, who may be only briefly in the country to join their vessels, is being introduced from this week. This latest incursion follows five earlier border failures since early August. One of these led to the recent outbreak in Auckland. We propose an urgent shift to a traffic-light approach to border control. This system would facilitate travel to New Zealand from places that are free of COVID-19 (some Australian states and Pacific islands), while reducing the risk associated with travellers from jurisdictions with uncontrolled spread. Keeping COVID-19 at the border
• paying a bond (eg NZ$1000) to be returned after three weeks if the traveller has adhered to the digital tracking system. Amber: current border quarantine and testing These could be states with evidence of ongoing pandemic spread, but where it is relatively well controlled (for example, in Japan, South Korea, Singapore). For this zone, the current measures (facility-based quarantine for 14 days and testing twice during that period) could apply, albeit with some refinements. Facility-based quarantine periods could be shorter and replaced with home quarantine. The isolation period at home could be combined with the usual PCR testing, digital tracking, mask use and heavy fines for any breaches. Various East Asian jurisdictions, including Taiwan, have successfully used home quarantine. As above, a bond could be used to encourage adherence to the conditions.
Red: additional measures or no travel
One of the recent border failures led to the relatively serious outbreak in Auckland, with 179 cases, three deaths and major social and economic impacts. Two other outbreaks, including one from a returnee infected in a quarantine facility and the latest from port workers infected by incoming seafarers, were controlled at an early stage. The others involved infections of border facility workers: health workers on two occasions and a maintenance worker. These six events represent system failures — the goal should be to have complete containment of infection at the border and no cases in the community. Contributing factors include the use of hotels for quarantine (for which they are not designed) and poor system design, including the lack of testing of seafarers flying into the country to join their ships. Such failures could increase if the proportion of infected travellers coming to New Zealand increases as many parts of the world experience resurgences and rising infection rates. Given the marked difference in the intensity of the COVID-19 pandemic in different regions and countries, we propose a trafficlight system of risk stratification for jurisdictions from which travellers arrive in New Zealand. New Zealand has much of the infrastructure already in place to support this shift, including a booking system that could help to manage it. We would also get very rapid data on whether it is working, based on the rate of positive cases detected at the border.
Green: quarantine-free travel with precautions A growing number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region have eliminated COVID-19, notably most states of Australia. Some Pacific island jurisdictions have never had cases. Quarantine-free travel should be possible from these jurisdictions, provided an assurance program is in place to ensure elimination requirements are being met, including adequate levels of testing. Since there is always a small risk of outbreaks from border control failures (Australia also uses hotels for quarantine, which failed in Victoria), we would need to consider retaining aome controls, such as: • rapid testing (using PCR methods) on arrival in New Zealand, or rapid antigen tests once these are considered reliable enough and are available in New Zealand • digital tracking for the first three weeks in New Zealand (via a traveller’s smartphone and with government-provided phones for those who don’t have their own)
Jurisdictions with uncontrolled pandemic spread (including US, UK, Russia and India) would fall into this category. For New Zealanders returning from these places, the government could require pre-travel measures in addition to the current quarantine. The form of these measures needs careful development, but could include evidence of both pre-travel home quarantine (for three days or more) and negative pre-travel test results. New Zealand should evaluate the experience in countries already using pretravel COVID-19 testing to determine the most feasible approach. Currently, Cyprus, Bahamas, Bermuda, Hawaii, Hong Kong and Italy require proof of a negative result on arrival. Such measures add to the burden these travellers face, but can be justified. They reduce the risk of outbreaks on incoming aircraft as well as the load on the isolation/quarantine facilities. Quarantine facilities for these travellers could be restricted to those outside of Auckland, for example at the Ōhakea air base, ideally in purpose-built facilities with properly designed ventilation and no shared spaces. If all these measures still resulted in high numbers of infected travellers arriving in New Zealand, we would need to consider suspending travel from these red-zone jurisdictions. New legislation could empower the government to allow for such constraint on the right of citizens to return to New Zealand from high-risk countries during a global pandemic. New Primary school plans submitted by Paul Taylor
The Ministry of Education has submitted plans to Queenstown’s council for Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau at Hanley’s Farm subdivision.
“We had a great set of applicants, some local, some nationally and from around the world too, so we had a good strong pool of people to appoint from,” Hollyer says.
Here’s the layout of Queenstown’s next primary school.
“Tania’s an experienced principal and it’s been good to have her on board already, and her voice at the table. She’ll be great.” The school, on Howden Drive, was gifted its official te reo name by local iwi. Ngai Tahu blessed the school earlier this year. It will be commonly known as Te Kura Kawarau. Te Kura means a place of learning. Kawarau is the Maori name for the Remarkables mountain range. “Darren [local Ngai Tahu leader] and [his son] Michael Rewi have been so supportive. Darren came to our landscape meeting and we’ve talked about our values and our vision and made sure it aligned with them. “It’s been really great to have that reciprocal relationship with them, we’re very lucky.” Hollyer says there’s already been interest from the community, and the board is in discussions with the Ministry and Remarkables Primary around zoning. There’s no time frame around how the school will grow beyond 425 pupils. “You’ll know from Shotover how quickly things can grow, particularly when there’s a suburb developing around it, so I suspect it will be sooner rather than later. “
School establishment board chair Gigi Hollyer says construction is slated to begin in February, with the school due to open in 2022 with a roll of 425 children. It will grow over the years to reach a capacity of 950. Education Minister Chris Hipkins confirmed in September 2019 that $17 million has been set aside for the new school, including buying the land. The board, Ministry officials and contractor Southbase have met every fortnight for the past few months to work on the design.
QLDC has now received the Ministry’s resource consent and a decision is expected soon. There have been pre-submission meetings with council, so there’s not expected to be any issues. The next step will be a hui in January or February, so the community can see the site, meet the new head and hear the board’s hopes and dreams. “Our vision for our school is a place to gather, learn and grow, so we’re looking forward to working with our community.” Hollyer says there’ll be classrooms that can be used for community meetings, along with the school hall, and there’ll also be a community garden.
“We’re working towards a flexible learning environment,” Hollyer says. “There’s some pretty cool stuff we’re going to do around sustainability, with rainwater, grey water and solar power. “There’ll be breakout spaces for the kids to learn collaboratively, but also smaller, medium and larger spaces where you can have a group “That’ll be over and above what the Ministry pays for, so we’ll be of say 30 children as well. looking to work with the community on that.” “We’re trying to make it as future-proof as possible. We’ve been around education long enough to know things change - at the moment collaborative learning in open spaces is the trend, but that may swing back the other way. “So with furniture, sliding walls and glass doors, we can get a flexible space that can be used for either. “We’ve felt really heard by the Ministry, it’s been really good.” Joining the meetings in recent weeks has been foundation principal Tania McNamara, who was appointed last month. McNamara, who’s led Milton Primary School for the past 9 years, will begin her new role full-time at the start of next year, building her team and the school’s culture prior to opening in 2022.

Queenstown residents still face power bill hikes of between $290 and $770 as year despite the Commerce Commission slashing $86 million from Aurora Energy’s upgrade plans. Aurora wanted to spend $609 million over the next five years on its failing electricity lines network, which provides services to about 90,000 customers including the Queenstown Lakes District. In a draft decision released last Thursday, the Commerce Commission cut the proposed asset spending by $41m to $315m and the operational spending by $45m to $208m. The impact on people’s electricity bills will be lower than what Aurora proposed, but still significant. They will steadily grow over the next five years under the plans. In Queenstown, a small consumer could be paying $138 a month for their electricity from April next year - that’s $4.80 more than they pay now. Their annual bill would be $1,655. But by 2025/2026, that monthly bill would be $165. That’s $27.20 more a month than today, and their annual bill would blow out to $1,981. The Commission laid out two scenarios. The first scenario, caps Aurora’s revenue increase at 10% each year. The second proposes capping it at 5% for the first year, then 10% for the rest. This would, however, result in lines charges staying higher for longer. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult says he will work with his fellow councillors to understand the impact of the draft decision. “I am cautiously optimistic that CCNZ is making the best of a bad situation on behalf of our communities,” Boult says. “Pushing the programme from three to five years and reducing the proposed spend by $86 million is mitigating but ultimately households in our district will still be looking at adding something like $3-$13 per month to the power bill and this increases every year until by 2026 they will be paying $20-$73 per month. “For many that prospect will be inconceivable.” More customer engagement, more reporting on delivery of the upgrades, and push back on the number of unplanned outages allowed over the coming years was also welcomed by QLDC.

The Commission draft authors note: “Communities in Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes, in particular, have made it clear they do not have any trust or confidence in Aurora to deliver what it says it will. “Individuals and businesses told us of their concerns about subsidising Dunedin and their desire for Aurora and its owners to be held further accountable for past failures.” The authors highlight the fact the Commission has already taken court action to prosecute Aurora for breaching its reliability standards, for which it was fined $5 million. The Commerce Commission is asking for public feedback on the draft. Job Ads expand rapidly in October The number of open positions in Queenstown grew 15% from September according to the latest JobFix survey numbers. While October was behind the same month last year by just shy of 60%, the jobs market has rebounded significantly over the last couple of months. The inability of local businesses to find staff and especially NZ staff is in stark contrast to predictions made about a significant rise in unemployment across the region. The growth is in line with seasonal demand but this year there is the declining pool of workers available with visitor visas and migrant workers dropping out of the labour pool, creating a headache for local operators. Construction is the other area that’s difficult to attract enought staff to match demand. Available construction roles account for 18% of the roles also up from 15% last year. As a result of the scarcity of employees, QLDC has announced another Jobs Fair to be held on November 26th to put employers and those looking for work together. This follows the Jobbortunities expo held in October where horticulturalists and other Central Otago businesses looked for candidates from Queenstown to fill the thousands of vacancies in that region. The JobFix survey data covers the October period using data from Sits Vac in The Lakes Weekly Bulletin and JobFix.co.nz and covers the advertised available positions in Queenstown.
