The Jacinda and Grant show What our new MP Joseph Mooney can achieve from the back benches of the opposition is a very good question we will be asking him over the course of this parliamentary term, and we the voters will be judging him on when it is election time again. For now, we can only wish him the best and hope he does not go missing in action (see page 8 for Joseph Mooney’s first words as our MP). For the new government, it is 3 more years of the Jacinda and Grant show. With such a large caucus behind them some new talent is bound to rise through the ranks but let us not kid ourselves. This is the era of Jacinda Ardern and her righthand man Grant Robertson. Anyone who attended the finance spokesperson debate in Queenstown pre-election will know Mr Robertson is no fool. Will he visit Queenstown again or give a hoot if our glass is half empty or half full? Probably not. But what we can expect is a lot of hard work to safely reopen our borders with Australia and eventually the world. Grant Robertson might not directly oversee that task, but as the guy with the government purse strings he will be just as keen as hundreds of Wakatipu based businesses to see some foreign tourism currency in our coffers before the end of this term of government. Very few wish for a return to mass tourism. But we cannot live in an isolated bubble forever. Two years will be the limit for me.

For now, it is you, me, and our fellow New Zealanders. Domestic tourism is great, and the serenity of our land with a fraction of the usual tourism foot traffic is a blessing indeed. We cannot underestimate the positives hence the landslide vote in favour of retaining the Ardern Government. If I did not have the responsibility of supporting my family and the jobs of a couple of dozen other Queenstowners, I would quite happily hitch up the family caravan and head for the hills on one of those welfare handouts we hear so much about. But the handouts will stop. They must. No amount of wishful thinking can hide the fact money does not fall out of the sky. Or grow on trees. People need to work. I certainly do. And therein lies one of the biggest challenges facing Queenstown. The lack of people willing to work. Economic diversification is an admirable ambition however the businesses here now and employing thousands of Queenstowner’s are built on the back of tourism and hospitality. Without working holiday makers, we are well short of the required employee numbers needed. Wages can and will go up as businesses become more desperate. That is supply and demand in its essence and none of my fellow capitalists can complain about that. But we need our government, Jacinda and Grant, to act quickly to allow those visa holders already in the country to stay and work in our town this summer. Nothing will be more frustrating than having a domestic tourism bonanza and not being capable of rising to the occasion. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

From my campaign chair Jeff Grant and the campaign team, to the incredible National Party volunteers - thank you all for your hard work over the past few months. Over the campaign 14 National Party MPs travelled south to listen and learn about what is important to us. This shows how valued and important the Southland electorate is to the National Party and helped shape various proposed policies which we will continue to lobby for in Wellington. I must also thank my amazing family who have been on this journey with me every step of the way, dealt with the long hours on the road travelling around the largest electorate in the country and supported me. Thank you to previous MP Hamish Walker as well on behalf of the electorate for all your hard work – we wish you and your family all the best on future endeavours. Our election always showcases the fantastic process of democracy we have here in New Zealand. In my journey to becoming the MP for Southland, I’ve gone from in many cases a complete unknown, to being selected as the National candidate by our wonderful local National Party members to vie for the seat and then being selected by the people of Southland to represent you. I will do all I can to represent every person in Southland, regardless of how you voted, and I hope you all will support me as your Member of Parliament. It’s now just the beginning. I am looking forward to representing this remarkable region and its incredible people in Parliament. We’re facing a once in a lifetime battle in Covid-19 and here in Queenstown our community is hurting. We’re facing a huge labour crisis here in the Lakes District and Central Otago and we need to retain our overseas workforce to fill these jobs. We need to support these people who have made our community their home to be able to stay, but current visa restrictions mean this is proving more difficult than it needs to be. If we want to rebuild our tourism industry in the region, but also diversify, we need people in jobs. It’s an incredibly challenging time and we have some huge challenges ahead but out of adversity always comes opportunity. I will do all I can to help our region identify and maximise these opportunities. The campaign has been an incredible experience and I have enjoyed every minute of it, but the real work starts now.

The Story of Stuff and The Repair Revolution When we go to have that spring clean, we may go through the Kondo process of getting rid of things that don’t spark joy...but what about the stuff we treasure that’s damaged, broken or in need of repair? Often that stuff gets put back in storage in the hope that one day we will finally have the time or know someone with the skills to bring it back to life. A teapot your grandmother gave with a broken spout, a treasured mug with a broken handle, a bag with a broken zip etc. There is something called wabi-sabi not to be confused with wasabi - it’s the Japanese concept of a world view centred on the acceptance of imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. This concept can teach us much about ‘stuff’ and the story of stuff. Many items we own do have a story and they’re the items that could be someone else’s trash but because of its history, the person who gave it to us, or the memories it conjures up, make it a treasured item.
On Saturday 28th November, Sustainable Queenstown and Wastebusters are hosting the first Repair Revolution workshop here in Queenstown at the QLDC Events Centre in Frankton from 10am to 2pm. For this we hope that more ‘fixers’ of bikes, clothes, pottery, electrics, furniture, bikes, etc will come forward to support our community in keeping more ‘stuff’ out of landfill and prolonging the life of the items we have. Perhaps you have stuff you think you could bring along?

The cheapest ways to fertilise your veggie garden by Dr Compost/ Ben Elms Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill. Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com
Living in Central Otago is expensive. We’re miles from anywhere. We predominantly grow grapes, cherries; there’s a few sheep, some cows; and a tiny but growing crew of market gardeners. Our busy lives disconnect us from the earth, but growing veggies reconnects us to the life source. Plus, it can be an inexpensive way to get healthy, nutritious food. So, get out there and start a veggie garden: there is no greater joy than picking and eating home-grown veggies! To help your veggies grow, you don’t need to buy expensive compost from a shop. We all have a continuous supply of nutrients coming out of our home that we can capture and use to fertilise our veggie gardens for free or nearly free. 1. Trench composting. It’s simple and costs nothing. Dig a trench in your veggie garden and put ALL your veggie scraps in there. Bones, bread, the lot! Shred up some brown cardboard, dampen and mix in with the veggie scraps. Cover with 20 to 30cm of soil and you’re ready to go. 2. Bokashi Buckets. There’s an initial outlay of around $50 (they’re subsidised at 2 for the price of 1 from QLDC). Then, every four months it’s $10 for another bag of magic dust. Bokashi is trench composting on steroids, just without the zits and mood swings! E.M.(effective microorganisms) are used in this system, speeding decomposition and inoculating the soil with heaps of beneficial biology. ‘I love Bokashi’ stickers are available from me… 3. Worm chimneys. Drill multiple holes into a repurposed/ bought (HDPE No 2 plastic) 20 litre bucket or 50 litre bin, cut out the bottom and bury up to the lid in your veggie garden. Buy some compost worms and put in approximately 500 grams of tiger worms (again subsidised by QLDC). Three to five of these units would deal with a family of four’s food scraps. Add food scraps and damp shredded cardboard alternating between buckets. Once a year, or when full, harvest the vermicompost. The worms will be at the top and can be set aside and put back in once empty. 4. Urine. We’re peeing a great resource all day! Urine is a free fertiliser. Collect in a bucket, dilute it in a watering can and use around your veggies and fruit trees. Top tip: don’t store urine for too long as it will start to pong.

A huge happy birthday to Alan Hamilton - he turned 90 on Sunday - a life farming and goldmining around here. When I was young, he let me put my hand in a big AGEE jar almost full of gold he’d found - he told me that when the jar was full, he’d sell it and then fill another one. Imagine what one of those would have been worth these days - especially given how extraordinarily heavy gold is. My mother had a great photo of him in the 80’s shearing her Angora goats on a tablecloth in the middle of a paddock, with a lit cigarette in the corner of his mouth. I’m sure OSH would have something annoying to say about that!! I wonder what OSH will say about the fabulous idea of Rod Drury’s to have driverless buses in the Wakatipu? I think it’s sensational but I worry that Transit or QLDC or whichever body of people has not enough to do, will probably dream up some more utterly pointless and ugly signs. “WATCH OUT FOR INVISIBLE DRIVERS”, perhaps. Thanks so much to everyone who turned up at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday night for the Tea Dance - the ladies who brought a plate put on a marvellous spread, but the men with crates performed very poorly - not a crate to be seen! And everyone was too busy dancing to be doing much drinking - only one bag of empty bottles for over a hundred people. The museum got lots of money and I had to keep stuffing $50 notes in museum director David Clarke’s pockets as people who hadn’t bought tickets turned up on the night. We all had a ball, or a dance, or a twirl and my dance card shows that Fred Astaire and Donald Trump had both signed up for one with me. Lots of dance club members were there and they made the dancefloor look so terrific and encouraged a lot of the nondancing population to trip the light fantastic. One young woman told me she loved it all being so vintage (not 100% sure how happy I am to be considered vintage). Huge demand for a repeat performance so I’ll keep you posted. Impact100 held a fab cocktail party at the Threepwood Homestead at Lake Hayes - I tried to ignore that gorgeous view and to focus on the five finalists hoping for the $100,000 - it’s going to be so hard to choose - conservation, ambulance, music, babies, mental health - I love them all. And straight from there to Jonathan Gurnsey’s 20200 days party - he was going to celebrate his 20,000th day alive (you do the math) but COVID mucked up that plan so he let it stretch another 200. Happy 20200, Mr G!! Natasha Beckman has been here this week - she’s the British Council’s Director for NZ and the South Pacific, tasked with creating cultural ties between the UK and us. Her previous career was running the Urban Soul Orchestra (look it up - she definitely knows the business!!) It was so exciting hearing all the things that might be able to happen, and especially the ones that might happen here in our own beautiful basin. She organised a cocktail party at The Rees with the British High Commissioner, Laura Clarke. Honestly, all the New Zealanders in the room were embarrassed at how beautifully fluent in Te Reo the HC was - we should take a leaf out of her book. Lots of locals heard this intelligent young woman speaking to a huge crowd in Arrowtown on Anzac Day 2019 (so different from this year when we all stood in the rain at the end of our drives in the dark listening to the radio dawn service and hearing the mournful Last Post being played). This year has been so different, but different isn’t always bad - I’m very excited about having such a lot of young people being in charge of the country - I’m sure there will be mistakes, but it’s not as if mistakes are exclusive to the young! I stole this peony from my friend Katrina’s garden - I just couldn’t help myself! Head along to the Presbyterian minimarket on Saturday in Frankton - all sorts of treasure will be there - non Presbyterians very welcome...

Queenstown and Wanaka airport expansion plans have been shelved for at least two and a half years. by Paul Taylor Uncertainty created by the impact of Covid-19 has prompted Queenstown Airport Corporation to revise its plans in its latest Statement of Intent. It follows a bitterly-fought ongoing campaign by anti-airport expansion pressure groups, wider community concern about the impact of mass tourism on the district, and frustration from Queenstown district councillors that QAC was not listening to its requests. Queenstown Lakes District Council is the majority shareholder in the airport corporation, and so guides its direction through the Statement of Intent.

The key line is: “QAC will not apply to expand air noise boundaries at Queenstown Airport, nor progress plans to develop Wanaka Airport, over the period covered by this SOI.”
But, “due to the uncertainty in the aviation and tourism sectors caused by COVID-19 we now do not expect to reach the air noise boundaries at Queenstown Airport for many years and certainly beyond the pre-COVID forecast,” the SOI reads. QAC is working with Sounds Air to introduce scheduled turbo-prop services between Wanaka and Christchurch in late 2020, however this can be accommodated without expansion. QAC will “at some point in the future” resume master planning for Wanaka Airport, but that will not include wide-body jet operations. Wanaka councillor Niamh Shaw said while the SOI did not deliver everything councillors had promised to deliver to the community back in December, due to the pandemic, it is “conservatively, about 300 times better than the SOI Council agreed at the April meeting and currently adopted by the QAC”. A joint steering group with the mayor, three councillors, three QAC directors and the chief executives of each organisation was established in January 2020 to guide the development of the SOI through its key milestones. QAC expects total revenue for FY20 to be just over $46 million, but that is forecast to halve for FY21 to $22.4m, and then gradually recover over the following years. It will pay an $8,295,000 dividend for FY20, the majority to QLDC and the rest to shareholder Auckland International Airport, but will pay nothing in dividends over the following two years. It plans to continue with its $36m earthquake strengthening project, pay Remarkables Park Ltd, $18.34m for the land dubbed ‘Lot 6’, and will also increase debt from $69m to $87m by FY23. The recent independent socio-economic impact assessment report estimated that Queenstown and Wanaka airports contributed approximately $526 million to the Queenstown Lakes district’s GDP in 2019. About $40 million of this was related to airport operations, and a further $486 million to visitor expenditure attributable to the airports. The district’s total GDP in 2019 was $3.06 billion . The SOI also details sustainability and climate change initiatives and QAC’s commitment to working for the holistic health of the district. “QAC encourages QLDC (and the community that it serves) to use the current hiatus in international passenger volumes as an opportunity to complete its spatial plan for the district and adjacent regional centres, which in turn will enable QAC to form its long-term strategy to support this overarching plan,” it reads.

Fee and I came to Queenstown from Brisbane where I completed over 100 episodes with over 4000 listens to the podcast named ‘From the Valley Podcast.’ The From the Valley podcast centred around the Valley Chamber of Commerce with Brisbane themes. There was a mix of episodes, but the common thread was an someone, telling the story of their life. Lessons they have learnt, their first jobs, favourite hobbies, sports all of which were incredibly interesting. Guests on the podcasts included the Chamber Presidents, politicians, professional sports people, important people in business and lots of friends were on it. It was a very enjoyable time. I first got into podcasting listening to the Joe Rogan Experience, as well as a very good Accounting podcast, I’m an accountant by trade, ‘From the Trenches’ and many MMA podcasts. I thought I could put my own spin on a podcast and have also done a few other special episodes from time to time.

I used to work for govt on the other side of Immigration in Queenstown and saw an opportunity to be able to help people and fill a genuine gap in the market to provide high quality, professional advice that was affordable. I wanted to be able to dedicate my work and career to helping people that genuinely needed representation but previously may not have been able to access such a service. How long have you been in Queenstown and why did you choose to live here? I have lived in Queenstown for around 10 years. I got offered a job in Queenstown when I was living in Dunedin after finishing my studies. So, I packed up my van and drove over to Queenstown on a Saturday, went and viewed a flat on the Sunday, moved in on the Monday and started work on the Tuesday. Recommended must-do activity in and around Queenstown? Around the Basin bike winery tour! What’s your favorite place to eat? Favourite place to dine in would definitely be Atlas! If you were stranded in Queenstown and could have only 1 item, what would it be and why? Credit card – selfexplanatory! What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? Cleaning the house.
Martin Antonio Guich (AKA Party Marty) Who is your inspiration? And why? My father. He has been a huge inspiration to me. He was an Immigrant to the United States. He arrived with $150 in his pocket, a suitcase, a guitar, and sideburns, he worked very hard in 2 full time jobs for 30 years. He came from no money and poverty and worked hard to provide a better life and future for me, and my family and he is my inspiration for work ethic and for who I am today. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read, seen or learned in the past week? Michelle Obama has more Grammy awards than Katy Perry. What’s the best bad decision you ever made? Tattooing “Party Marty” on the inside of my lip. What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? My most valuable skill is the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. My most useless skill is being able to play the harmonica. What’s on your bucket list? Impossible to answer in one question, but, travel south East Asia, and fly first class. What did you always want to try but never found the courage to do? Go through a haunted house like Fear Factory. What slang or trend makes you feel old? Living your best life/ YOLO What’s your best piece of advice? Don’t be afraid of the unknown and don’t be afraid to be different or to take risks.

2020 is the second year of the Writers Festival. It all started in May 2018 when a group of friends decided that Queenstown needed its own Writers and Readers Festival. Like all good festivals a committee was formed and after many months of planning the Queenstown Writers Festival was held over two days in November 2019. In 2020 the festival has grown to involve 14 writers over four days. The festival also held a short story writing competition that drew entries from across the Otago and Southland region. The Writers Festival aims to present a range of events and speakers to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Novelists, poets, children’s writers and non-fiction writers will all share their stories with a local audience and lead writing workshops. This year the festival celebrates four major New Zealand authors to headline the festival: Tom Scott, Witi Ihimaera, Dame Fiona Kidman and Becky Manawatu and conclude with the launch of Emma Timmis new book. The festival will take place across three venues - Sherwood, Queenstown Contemporary at Five Mile and Yonder between Thursday 5th and Sunday 8th November.

Emma Timmis is a climbing instructor, expedition guide, illustrator and public speaker based in Queenstown. She’s got a thing about running and in 2014, Emma Timmis became the first person to run across Africa; 3974 km from Namibia to Mozambique. Her adventure was inspired by an uninspiring lack of women’s sports coverage – something she thinks is holding young athletes back. “I don’t feel that it’s fair that girls don’t see much women’s sports. I didn’t at a young age, so it took me longer to get into what I do now. Even as a teenager, I remember trying the whole make-up thing and not enjoying that, but I felt that it was what I was ‘supposed’ to do. Really, I enjoyed climbing trees and running around the park. So, it’s my mission to get more women into sport.” As part of this mission, she’s written and illustrated a children’s book called ‘The Girl Who Ran Across Africa’, to inspire youngsters to dream big. It’s also about following through with your plans, even when the going gets tough. Emma’s first big run was a 2500 km trail across South Africa, to raise money for a wildlife rescue centre. She was the first female to complete the trail. “I’m not much good at baking,” she says “so I thought I’d do some running, though I’d never ran further than a half marathon before.” “I got back from South Africa and I thought: well, I’m not doing anything like THAT ever again. People have normal lives where they go to work and do their hobbies and that’s a nice life, I’ll do that… this lasted about a year,” she jokes. Like any good story, Emma’s African adventure started with a bottle of tequila (note – this part isn’t in the children’s book) after watching the Banff Film Festival with her climbing friend Aysha Mahda. “There were a lot of films about men, there was even a film about a dog… but not one film about women. So afterwards, we drank tequila and had a rant. “I mentioned my South African run, which Aysha didn’t know I’d done. She asked me if I’d do something similar to raise money for The Seed Project in Zimbabwe and I said yes, because I’d had a lot of tequila.” Aysha took the idea seriously and organised for Emma to do the 3974 km run from Namibia to Mozambique, via Zimbabwe. The drunken conversation was in 2013 and by 2014, she was running though deserts and jungles, past elephants, cheetahs, lots of giraffes, zebras and the occasional group of warthogs. Snakes were a concern, particularly during evening runs, as the road surface collects heat during the day and provides a warm place for the snakes to snooze at night. To ward off lions, Emma’s team gave her a can of pepper spray (thankfully, she didn’t need to use it). The book’s official launch will be part of this year’s Queenstown Writers Festival. The event will be held at Sherwood Queenstown, 6pm – 7pm on Sunday 8th November. It’s free to attend (and tequila from the bar is optional). Emma will talk about her adventures and the process behind writing and illustrating the book. Copies of ‘The Girl Who Ran Across Africa’ will be for sale too!

Sherwood Queenstown Interviewer Phil Jones talks to two award-winning crime novelists. Liam McIlvanney studied at the universities of Glasgow and Oxford, and holds the Stuart Chair in Scottish Studies at the University of Otago. He won the 2014 Ngaio Marsh Award for his second novel, Where the Dead Men Go. His most recent novel, The Quaker, won the 2018 McIlvanney Award for Scottish Crime Book of the Year. Paddy Richardson is the author of two collections of short stories and seven novels. Her new novel By the Green of the Spring is to be published early in 2021. Paddy lives in Dunedin, on the Otago Peninsula, where she is a full time writer.

Eating healthy at Habebes From its inception Habebes has been a firm local lunch favorite with workers on the go. Habebes means ‘much loved’ in Arabic and after three decades (and then some) in business, it’s certainly true. This Middle Eastern influenced café has been a Queenstown staple since 1986. Original owner Katrina Khalil opened the café using some of her family’s favourite Lebanese recipes. Many of them are still used today – the chocolate addiction slice, vegan lentil pies and big, hearty kebab wraps are still staples in the diets of many Queenstowners. However, Habebes has been influenced by nearly everyone who has ever worked there broadening out the menu, with Arepas from Colombia, now regularly appearing on a Thursday, one of the latest examples. “However, you can’t change the options too much, or people get irate!” jokes Amanda Mulqueen, who’s owned the café since 2010 (after working at Habebes since 1999). Habebes offers a large selection of fresh mixed salads, from sesame grated carrot to tabbouleh, all made from scratch each morning, along with pies and soups.

The café was one of the first to offer vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options alongside more traditional kebabs. It was also an early leader in rewarding customers who use BYO containers and continues its push into sustainability. One of the things that has changed is the clientele; “We used to get mostly women in the 1990s, back then male ‘Tradies’ were only interested in pie and chips, but we get a lot now – guys are becoming more health-conscious and are realising that healthy doesn’t have to mean tasteless. Locals have always been, and still are, our main customers,” says Amanda. “We’ve seen a lot of trends come and go, but we’ve stuck to what we do. It’s always been about eating natural real food – raw vegies, food prepared with no-fuss or chemistry involved. It’s healthier (and tastier) to eat fresh, whole foods.”
“Some of the salads are seasonal – in summer, we ditch the pumpkin and serve up lots of summer greens – I just don’t see any reason to eat out of season, it’s not nice and it’s expensive.” Amanda says the café’s focus is on fresh seasonal produce, which helps keep prices reasonable and dishes delicious. More than 50 residents from various tourism organisations who had lost their jobs or were on reduced hours took up the call, to join the newly-formed Tourism Workforce Alliance. Between June and October, people of all ages battled the weather to chop wilding pines, broom and gorse, dig tracks, spray and weed, wheelbarrow mulch, plant future forests, make DOC traps and remove predators. The Tourism Workforce Alliance initiative was spearheaded by Bungy NZ which provided project management and operational resources to organise project and workforce logistics. Funding was provided via DOC’s Kaimahi for Nature fund and the Queenstown Lakes ‘In the Wild’ Working Group. The projects completed included: • A new 1.4km kids’ bike trail loop at Shotover Country, a 1.5km kids’ bike trail loop at Lake Hayes Estate, a 250m trail at Lakeside Estate Reserve, and upgrades to the Lower Shotover River track.

Father-of-two Tony Banks, 56, was thrilled to be part of the Tourism Workforce Alliance team thanking everyone who made it possible, particularly Matt Hollyer and Henry Van Asch from AJ Hackett Bungy. “The workforce has given me real purpose over the past few months and I feel good about what we’ve achieved for the environment and the feedback we’ve received from locals. I met some great people, got fitter and learned some new skills which I’m putting to good use everywhere I go now I’m pulling out broom!” A celebratory BBQ for all involved was held last Friday at the new Shotover Delta Track.

Finding staff becomes challenging - AGAIN! September almost felt like 2019 again, with the weekly number of jobs advertised accelerating since August and headed towards triple figures. While it never quite made it, seeing a robust jobs market gave business cause for both optimism and trepidation. Optimism because confidence was there for business to start hiring again and trepidation because many roles were becoming difficult to fill, once again! The optics feels a bit more positive with the comparison with September last year, while being down 44%, that monthly comparison deficit is shrinking. August was backward 52% and July was backward 65% on 2019. The number of jobs advertised in September doubled that of August. (343 vs 177) so the trend is coming back. The number of jobs advertised since the start of the year is still down 52%. These were the key findings in the JobFix September job ad statistics. Restaurant staffing struggling There is a significant number of openings in the Food and Beverage area, which is across all areas of the sector. A decent portion of this is driven because visa holders documentation is expiring and not being renewed by INZ
due to Governments current hardline policy on NZ first employment. Employers however are not getting NZ’ers or Permanent Residents applying and while Horticulture as a sector has had a relaxation in migrants visa extensions, no such relaxation is forth coming for Queenstown which had its special status revoked earlier in the year. If something isn’t done its likely productivity is going to suffer with reduced trading hours or worse. Hopefully there will be good news for local business on that front soon, now the election is over.
