Forty km/h is super slow. You can go faster than that on a bike!! Hopefully Usain Bolt has no plans to come to Queenstown, because if he runs at his top speed, he’s going to get a ticket. Bolt was clocked at 44.64kmh during his world record 9.58-second 100 metres in Berlin in 2009. So, with the new 40kmh speed limits coming into force on many roads across the district over the next two months, an actual human can run quicker than you’ll be allowed to drive. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that Queenstown Lakes District Council met with a shitstorm of comments on social media last week when it ‘announced’ the changes, nearly 300 at last count. Many were from people who seem blissfully unaware that this has been rattling on for years. Having a last-minute bitch on Facebook isn’t going to do much when the council’s been through a full speed limit bylaw review process, with a public consultation process spanning five months. To be fair, Wanaka councillor Quentin Smith put on his waders and bravely stepped into the comments section to explain the review was driven by changes to the NZTA guidelines and will be rolled out nationally, and is designed to reduce the lethality of crashes, particularly car on person. He sympathised that even he’ll struggle with the 40kmh on Beacon Point Road in Wanaka.

Caroline and Justin Abbiss at Saturday nights Lakes District Museum Tea Dance in Arrowtown

Forty kmph is super slow. You can go faster than that on a bike, definitely an ebike, so we’ll be in the weird situation of being able to travel faster on the Queenstown trails than many of the roads. But it’s hard to argue with reducing the lethality of crashes. The difference in stopping distance between 40khm and 50khm, in a medium sized car on a dry road, is about 9 metres. If my child, or anyone else’s, is in that 9 metres, then I’m all for the changes. It likely won’t be enforced much, of course, in the Otago Lakes Central policing district, which stretches from Queenstown to Ranfurly, there were only 594 speeding tickets issued last year, and 387 the year before. But it will gradually change behaviour nonetheless. Stats show that the average speed in a 50-zone is actually 62kmh, while it’s closer to 50 in 40-zone. And that will count if there’s an impact. A pedestrian has a 70% chance of survival if hit by a car doing 40kmh, but that reduces to a 50% chance at just 45kmh. Your odds of surviving a crash with an ebike or Usain Bolt are even higher. Spend the long weekend in Cromwell

CBD

By Marion Low, Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group

Cromwell will be buzzing this Labour Day weekend with plenty of things to do and see. Here are just a few of the highlights:

by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

So much for life being quieter and less exciting with our borders closed - everyone seems to agree that they’ve never had such a busy time - balls and parties and ceilidhs and so many plays and shows and performances - we’re singing and dancing and painting and voting and somehow having to fit in the everyday things like work and gardening. I’m starting to dream about having a boring day. Despite my woeful lack of artistic skill, I was helping (being helped, more accurately) paint the backdrops for the wallflower wall (where the plain girls like me can sit and be chosen for a dance) for the Lakes District Museum Tea Dance with a group of local schoolkids. Honestly, I am so impressed, not just with their artistic talent, but they are all so eloquent and funny and charming - when I was a teenager, I don’t ever remember being any of those things. And I don’t really remember children being involved in setting up any events - I think adults felt it was better for things to be done “properly”. It’s hard work getting community events up and ready, but if you’ve never done it, have a go - it’s an excellent way to meet lots more people in the community and it’s very satisfying feeling you’re making a difference. Citizens Advice Bureau (my mother runs the one for unsolicited advice, and my children tell me I’m in the running to take over from her quite soon) can tell you about all sorts of groups that would love your help. Whatever you’re interested in, there’s something to tickle your fancy (when I typed that, it chose to write” fanny”, which looked a little odd) - Altrusa is organising a charity fashion show on Wednesday, Oct 21st at H&J’s in Remarkables Park at 7pm - you can get tickets from there or email president.queenstown@altrusa.org.nz and all the funds go to St Johns Ambulance. Or maybe you want to learn to make wire sculptures? Lee Van Der Geest is an absolute whizz and she’s running a couple of workshops at Millbrook on Oct 22 and 23 apparently it’s very easy and even the least creative people can create something that looks great. Contact Millbrook if you’re interested. And there are lots of book launches coming up next month at Dorothy Browns - Annabel Langbein’s memoir “Bella”, Sara McIntyre’s “Observations of a Rural Nurse” - she’s the daughter of artist Peter McIntyre and has published a really beautiful book of photos that will bring back a lot of memories for anyone born last century. Our own Sally Stone has also just had her “Pandemic” republished - she wrote it in 2012 and the publishers felt that with annoying old Covid 19 around, it would be very apt for children again. A propos of books, tickets for the Queenstown Writers Festival tickets are on sale now and you’ll need to be quick - see qtwritersfestival.nz. Have a fabulous Labour Weekend with not too much labour and plenty of leisure.

Sparkling Immersion – 24 October from 10 am Discover the traditional methods of creating Champagne or Methode Traditionnelle as we refer to it in our corner of the world. What is it that makes sparkling wine so beautiful and why do New Zealand and Central Otago sparkling stand out on the world scene? Join Rudi Bauer to discover the answers to these questions and more! Spaces are limited so book your spot on the Quartz Reef website. Heavy Trax Central Motor Speedway Season Opener – 24 October from 5 pm If you are a petrolhead, this is an event not to be missed! The fastest family show on earth kicks off this weekend with sprint cars, six shooters, saloons, stockcars, super saloons, productions, and mini stocks. Gates open at 3 pm, and the action starts at 5 pm. Ticket sales at the gate. Cromwell Half Marathon, 10k & Teams Relay – 25 October from 8:30 am The Cromwell Half-Marathon and 10k Run or Walk course takes you around the shores of beautiful Lake Dunstan, passing through the Heritage Precinct, with a backdrop of spectacular mountain views. This is a family-friendly, fun event which attracts runners of all levels. Entries are available on the day at Alpha Street Park, so bring your running shoes and get amongst it! Cromwell Fireworks and Street Party – 25 October from 4 pm Head down to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct for a night of live entertainment, street performers, a night market and amazing street food before the night lights up with an amazing fireworks display over Lake Dunstan at around 9pm. This event is a fun night for the whole family, so be sure to check out. Entry is free. There will be plenty of entertainment throughout the night. The festivities will kick off at 5:30 pm with Cromwell College’s Kapa Haka welcoming all, followed by the Cromwell School of Dance performers and Goldfields Primary School’s Solid Gold Dancers strutting their stuff. Gina Schmitz will then take to the stage with her acoustic set before handing over to Turtle Funk who will keep the party going for the rest of the night. During it all, the night market and food court will also be in full swing. “We have a great selection stalls and food vendors coming along,” says Gretchen. “If the weather is really bad, we have arranged to move the night market along with most of the entertainment into the Memorial Hall, so be sure to come on down!” The big highlight of the event is, of course, the fireworks. Visitors are invited to take their seats on the verge from 9 pm to watch the dazzling display over the Kawarau arm of Lake Dunstan. “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to this fun community event!” The Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group is a volunteer group that works to attract visitors to Stay, Dine, and Play in Cromwell, Central Otago. If you would like more information about this topic, please call Marion Low at 027 6677 611, or email communications@cromwell.org.nz.

Fast and Furious Racing for 20/21 Season Opener By Ross Lindsay This Labour Weekend is unlike any other. The first public holiday since the Covid-19 Lockdown where crowd restrictions no longer apply for events like the 20/21 Season Opener on Labour Weekend Saturday (Oct 24) at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Crowell’s Sandflat Road off SH6 at Highlands Corner. What better way to shake off the Covid-19 blues and what for many was a pretty dismal winter, than fast and furious, clay flinging, adrenaline-pumping, exhaust bellowing dirt track action. Expect to see sparks fly and old rivalries renewed. For the first time in many seasons, heavyweight stockcars are returning to the Cromwell clay to show what biff and bash is all about. A good number of stockcar drivers have signed as Central Motor Speedway contract drivers so expect this class to go from strength. “I don’t want to give too much away but across all classes we have a great line up of drivers including newbies to their class and also to speedway,” explains promoter and sprint car ace Jason Scott “Sprint car numbers are looking healthy as are youth ministocks numbers, six shooters, saloons and productions. For Labour Weekend Saturday and at meetings throughout the season we are working on surprise crowd pleasers that further contribute to making this Central Otago’s Fastest Family Show on Earth. “Gates open at 3pm for early-birds to park up in their favourite spots on the natural amphitheatre surrounding the 500 metre ‘avocado-shape’ track. Racing starts at 5pm for a family and neighbour-friendly finish time of around 9pm.”

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Nationals Joseph Mooney retains Southland, against the Red Wave by Paul Taylor Queenstown lawyer Joseph Mooney has already flown to Wellington, ready to represent Queenstown as the new National MP for the Southland electorate. Mooney received 17,817 of the 34,685 votes cast in the electorate, beating Labour candidate Jon Mitchell (12,741). Mooney spent election night at the Gore Club, in Gore, with party faithful, before travelling home to Queenstown on Sunday, where he lives with Silvia and three kids, before jetting north first thing Monday morning. It was a “bitter-sweet” night, he says, with National winning the seat but losing the party vote locally, and being eviscerated on a national level. “All credit to Labour, they’ve obviously done a good job connecting with their voters and others,” Mooney says.

The Council Word Lap pool lane closures Six lanes of the Alpine Aqualand lap pool will be closed between 9.00am-1.00pm on Thu 22 and Wed 28 October for local schools’ triathlon events. Two lanes will remain open for public use, but you may wish to schedule your visits outside these times. Many thanks for your co-operation while our local kids get their race faces on!

Giants and Demons at Frankton Library Join special guest and kaumātua Darren Rewi for some spooky local myths and legends especially for Hallowe’en. Suitable for teens and adults – stories may be too scary for younger children. Thu 29 October, 5.30-6.30pm, Frankton Library at Remarkables Park. Free event – no booking required. For more info drop by the library or call 03 441 3680.

“Now the challenge for us is to rebuild and reconnect and earn the privilege of getting the party vote next election.” Still, Mooney is delighted to be elected. “It’s awesome. I come from a background of being a kid who lived in poverty, so to be able to now represent people in parliament will be pretty amazing. “I definitely put everything into my campaign. I didn’t have a huge lead in, obviously, but I didn’t leave anything to chance and used every moment of every day to get around this vast electorate and talk to as many people as I could and try to understand what their issues were, and just let them know I’m here to be an advocate for them and region.” Mooney, only won the nomination in July, after Hamish Walker announced he wouldn’t stand after leaking confidential Covid-patient details to the media, while trying to defend himself against accusations of racism. Walker himself replaced disgraced National MP for Clutha-Southland Todd Barclay, who stepped down after a taping scandal. Asked whether there’s anything he can learn from their mistakes, Mooney says: “I’ve built my own business from scratch, I’m a trial lawyer and also a mental health advocate, so look I’ll just carve my own path to be frank, and let people be the judge from there.” He believes his law experience will be crucial in the role. “This is definitely an advocate’s role, and I’ve been an advocate for many years now, and it’s also a law-maker role, so having an honours degree in law and working at the sharp end of law will be helpful.” The pressing issues facing Queenstown and elsewhere in his electorate are migrant workers and also the health system. “I’ve spoken to business owners who are potentially looking at having to shut down in the next few months if they can’t get the visas extended for their employees, because 100% of their employees are from overseas. Although they would love to hire Kiwis, Kiwis are not applying for the jobs. “Health is another big one. Our health system in the region has been underinvested in over time. It’s a significant issue in our region and something I really want to lobby for. “ Mooney, he intends to represent everyone in the region, both those who voted for him and those who didn’t. “I want to do my very best for everyone who lives here, to ensure this continues to be an incredible place and we can move the needle forward in a positive direction. “

classes at Alpine Aqualand begins 27 October. Fun, gentle and social exercise for you and your ‘bump’. Tuesdays 6.45-7.30pm until 24 November. $25 (gym & swim members), $35 (pool-only members) & $50 (non-members). For more info and bookings email qec@qldc.govt.nz or call 03 450 9005.

The app is a simple, free and fast way to send QLDC ‘Fix It’ requests, meaning the next time you spot a pesky water leak on the road outside your house or a fallen tree blocking a trail, snap it then send it and QLDC will solve it. You can download the Snap Send Solve app on Google Play and the Apple Store.

The St John’s Ambulance Services has always been at the core of what we do, but as future healthcare needs evolve, so has our Community Health Services program to be instrumental in building a more resilient community. Community Health Services operates every day to benefit community health outcomes and education services. True to our vision and values, St John is busy throughout the community as we provide programmes to help people in many ways. In some cases, they’re practical, like transport to health appointments; at other times they’re about emotional health, like providing regular contact with a caring friend. These services are run primarily by volunteers and are often free of charge. Our community transport needs, to access healthcare is accelerating. The St John Health Shuttle is a free community service that transports people to and from essential medical and health-related appointments. The service is operated by volunteers and is free-of-charge; however, as always a donation is really appreciated to help cover costs. The St John Health Shuttles fills a real community need, especially in rural areas. In many locations, there has been a gap in service delivery for people who require an affordable transportation option to enable positive health and wellbeing outcomes. The goal of the Health Shuttle service is to support timely access to health services and increase the opportunity for independent living. Without this service, access to health care would decline and social isolation and stress in the community would increase. At St John we strive to achieve the following six core social impacts with the health shuttle service: • Improved access to health care • Improved health and general wellbeing • Increased social contact and connection • Fewer missed health appointments • Reduced stress, gives peace of mind • Members of the community living independently longer. Our Local Wakatipu Health Shuttle has been servicing the local Community since 2012. Funded and initiated by the South Island Four Square group. Les and Bev Dawson Wakatipu Health Shuttle team leaders say “personally we haven’t been with the shuttle from the start but several drivers still driving have been. We were given the “team Leaders“ role about 4 years ago and with the fantastic team of positive local drivers the St John Health shuttle team are able to assist many locals and tourists with daily return trips to Invercargill for their medical treatments.” The Wakatipu Health Shuttle travels to Invercargill MondayFriday for all health related appointments. Bookings for the Health Shuttle can be made by calling 0800 103 046

OUT OF THE BUBBLE Regional Tourism Wanaka

Te Anau

Dunedin

Kaka Point

OUT OF THE BUBBLE Dunedin is our closest major city. It’s an underrated gem and full of contrasts and character. While we all know Dunedin as home to a trove of Edwardian - and Victorian-era iconic buildings which include New Zealand’s only castle, as well as the iconic Dunedin Railway Station there are also some lessor known places to see and experience. Olveston Historic Home - Located at 42 Royal Terrace, surrounded by a 1-acre ‘garden of national significance’ is New Zealand’s finest historic mansion is one example. Built in 1906, ‘Olveston’ was the home of businessman and philanthropist David Theomin. Breathtakingly furnished with the original artworks, antiques and artefacts from all around the world, a visit to ‘Olveston’ reveals the opulence, grace and grandeur of the early 1900s Edwardian era. www.olveston.co.nz Otago Museum is always great day out for families. Home to New Zealand’s biggest science centre, Tūhura has 45 hands-on interactives including a three-storey indoor slide, a bike-riding skeleton, and a Tropical Forest with thousands of exotic butterflies. There are also eight free galleries, the only 3D planetarium in Australasia, and free kids events every school holidays: Makerspace crafting tables, daily demos showing some explosive science, and gallery trails. Until February, Dinosaur rEvolution is open at the Museum, where you can see huge animatronic dinosaurs that move and roar, and skeletons, skulls, and touchable fossil casts will transport you to another world. www.otagomuseum.nz Wanaka ‘Over the hill’ sits Wanaka and roughly an hour away. Wanaka is becoming a tourism rival with a relaxed feel as the mountain appear at the other end of the lake and of course it is less built up. The water activities on the lake include paddle boarding, kayaking and the jet boat rides down the Clutha are extremely popular. The local wineries are world class as are the restaurants and cafes which are very much as good as Queenstown’s.

The gateway into the Catlins

Check out Edgewater Hotel especially on a fine day. Edgewater is located at the edge of the lake and positioned to catch the sunrise, its quite magical sitting outside having a morning coffee with scones made to order. Kaka Point, The Catlins Enjoying a stunning seaside setting Kaka Point feels like a lovely little village. One of the Catlins prime surfing spots with sweeping sandy beaches, Kaka Point also has a beautiful bush walk. The truly remarkable Nugget Point with its wealth of wildlife is just up the road and there is also a brewery, old fashioned pub and great function venue. While there call into the Point Café with its delicious freshest of fish offerings. The Point is open from lunchtime through to 8pm in the evening. In the weekend bookings are recommended. Te Anau You don’t know what you’re missing out on. From New Zealand’s best walking trails and the South Island’s largest lake to glowworm grottos here’s why you need to plan a longer stay in Te Anau. To truly appreciate Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound or play one of the world’s most scenic golf courses spend a couple of glorious days in Te Anau.

Sit back and relax with panoramic views of the ocean while dining or playing a game of pool or just sit in front of the open fire while tasting our amazing Seafood Platter with a local Catlins Brewery beer, which is made right here in Kaka Point. Open 7 days a week for Lunch & Dinner. We have the best Seafood Chowder and Blue Cod in South Otago.

Arts+Culture Cory Marshall Gallery adds further to Queenstown landscape photography gallery depth While the official opening isn’t until the 24th Cory has been busy transforming the Air NZ downtown check in space opposite Novotel Hotel into Queenstown’s latest landscape photography gallery venue. He’s had to turn his talent to furniture design and completely changing the space, including putting in a new wooden floor create a gallery where his and Jordan McInally’s work is beautifully showcased. Four years ago, Cory moved from the United States to New Zealand, having fallen in love with the Southern Alps, he decided to make the region his permanent home. ‘Even though The Southern Alps doesn’t have the height of the Rocky Mountains, it more than makes up for it with its scale and enormous panoramic aspect, not to mention it’s easier to access’ says Cory when we caught up in the gallery last week. While he has always wanted to have a permanent gallery, he couldn’t have picked a more interesting time to launch, with the International market gone for now and signing the lease during a pandemic, but despite that, he has been pleasantly surprised at the steady stream of people dropping in and the number of orders he received, especially from Auckland visitors.

He took the plunge to invest in all the printing equipment rather than wait for overseas printers to fly it in, often with less than perfect results. Now with his and Jordan’s art being printed on aluminium in Wanaka, he can custom print the images to fit most client’s spaces and with a reasonable turn around time, which has been what has been selling steadily. The gallery showcases a selection of stunning New Zealand landscape photography by both Cory and Jordan McInally. Cory’s work has taken him all over the world, photographing natural landscapes from Iceland to Cuba, Thailand to Australia. Jordan McInally, meanwhile, was born and raised in Queenstown. His photography portfolio heroes astrophotography scenes and mountain landscapes from around New Zealand. This will be his first permanent gallery space. Prior to this has held successful exhibitions at Cardrona Distillery and Rippon Vineyard, and has had several pop-up galleries in Wanaka over the past three years. The official opening reception will take place on Saturday the 24th of October 2020 from 5pm - 9pm at the Cory Marshall Gallery, 1-7 Earl Street, Queenstown. www.corymarshallgallery.com

Cory is the photographer of 10 years standing, he also prints all his own work, as well as the Gallery owner so he is able to tell the complete story of each piece. Cory prints all his own images onto ChromaLuxe aluminium panels locally at his studio in Wanaka through a process called dye sublimation. The result is a unique, modern look with no need for framing.

Lost sight of the bigger picture? Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland

Spending more time in the day speaking negatively to yourself? BEWARE! This is how dis-ease in the body is formed. Read on to banish self sabotage and learn in three easy steps how to get your self-love back. Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland shares her learnings from a recent challenge about how to fall back in love with your life. She also gives you her bespoke 15-minute hypnosis to help recode your mind to love you and a free online course called Just Be Me to reconnect you with who you are at your core.

I had to make a choice and fast! My self-love needed to be installed, I needed to believe that I was more than this. I took a drink, stretched and reset my mind. There was no way I had come this far, faced all these mini curve balls (my Dad fell very ill, I had to head to the UK so training became limited) and this ‘hill’, which I now referred to rather than mountain, was not going to beat me. Even though my body was screaming and physically having the juice to complete this was borderline, the notion that this hill would beat me was inconceivable. Right foot click in, gloves back on and eyes focused. Left, right, left, right, push, pull, repeat. The sudden rush of blood to my legs made them ache in that same way your hands do when they have been freezing cold and numb. Despite this I found myself smiling and when Sarah checked in with me in the support vehicle driving beside me she said ‘You look fresh’, ‘Yep’ I replied and I meant it.

Step 1. It’s OK to have negative dialogue. You know that voice well, you know the mocking tone, the volume, the pace. It comes from nowhere and can stop you in your tracks. When this happens know you have a choice, you can listen or you can DELETE it. All you do is shout DELETE, DELETE, DELETE or your version of it inside your head, or shout it out loud if you can. Scare the voice away, let your own self love and belief shine through.

Step 2. It’s OK to stop and breath. This step was a shock to me on the mountain that day, I thought that I had to keep going, no stopping was allowed but that was just my frame. That’s too hard, we need to stop and regroup, hydrate in my case and nurture in most cases. Look at what’s working, take time for you, relax and then keep going. I did this 4 times on that climb, once I made the voice go away that first time I stopped, I had decided I was winning. Stops meant stretching, getting the feeling back in my feet, taking a gel and pressing go again, ready and full of conviction.

Step 3. Love yourself, fully and completely. We recently ran a Facebook mindset course around falling back in love with life and with you. We invited people to join us as we ran our own big challenge using NLP mindsets. Our challenge was the cycle up Mont Ventoux, in turns out it was 32Km of constant uphill and we mean uphill.

This is not about being an egotistical nightmare, this is about quiet, steadfast, love. A knowing that you are so much more than you ever think you are. You can do so much more than you can imagine. Even as you have taken the time to read this, your neurology has created around 10,000 new neural networks for you to use.

“The Ventoux is a god of Evil, to which sacrifices must be made. It never forgives weakness and extracts an unfair tribute of suffering.” Roland Barthes, French philosopher.

You have a choice, it is that simple, decide to love who you are, don’t wait until you are slimmer, richer, fitter, smarter, older.

19km to go with legs pumping my inner chatter arose from that annoying place. It was incredibly hot, 32 degrees and my heart and lungs were screaming, let alone the numbness in my feet and the aching in my palms and neck.

A FREE Hypnosis audio designed to facilitate your journey to falling back in love with you. Self-love is underestimated and underperformed and we are very quick to berate ourselves and speak ill of ourselves.

Sarah (my wife and wing woman) had been back and forth along the climb and I knew she knew I was hurting, her final words before driving away, ‘find your rhythm’. I knew that the hardest part was to come, a steady 4-5% was now increasing and I knew it would for the next 7km. It would change rapidly reaching 10% in a very short time and maxing at 12%! Louder it rose, that wicked voice inside, ‘you can’t do this, you haven’t trained enough, it’s too far, it’s too hot, it’s too steep’. I unclipped my left foot, allowing the bike to naturally halt and stopped.

Our gift to you;

>>>> GRAB YOUR FREE AUDIO <<<< The unconscious is listening to you all the time and our cells are eavesdropping on our self-talk whether it’s good or bad and are ready to jump into action to achieve whatever request you make. If you want to give yourself a gift do our online course Just be Me, it’s free right now, normally $755. Sign up https://yourlifeliveit.com/course/just-be-me-nlp-course
