Don’t be a fence sitter and do nothing Is it really election day this Saturday? It seems this very important detail has been overlooked by most. Despite the billboards, media coverage and for our electorate at least an interesting and worthy cast of candidates, the election of our next government has taken a backseat to getting on with life. It has been a disruptive and quite frankly overwhelming 6 months. Not your usual set of circumstances leading into a general election. So, let’s focus people and do the right thing. The right thing is not voting for red, green, yellow or blue, it is the simple democratic act of voting. The right to vote is a hard-fought privilege and more important now than ever before. Not since the British first stuck a flag in the sands of Russell has the rulers of this land exercised such absolute power in controlling our lives. Expect this to continue whoever wins the election on Saturday night. We might have been willing to accept this absolute government control under lockdown level 4 such was the need for a united pandemic response. But now is the time for recovery and the decisions of our next government will be critical to the future wellbeing of this country. A huge responsibility. I doubt the next government will find us quite so willing to close our workplaces and everything else that makes life tick. Schools, recreation, and freedom of travel should another outbreak occur. Convincing us they have a pathway back from the brink and into a better future will require an exceptional sales pitch. They need to have the intelligence and tact to act as advertised. To survive three years as the next government with reputations intact will take a very special bunch of politicians indeed. Do any of the hopefuls have said credentials? That is your call to make. My job is to encourage you to at least look and make an educated guess. Tick a box, make that 4 boxes. One for the Southland electorate MP. Probably the one that will have the most meaning for the Wakatipu as this individual will be directly representing this community. They will be the person we reach out to in the hope of some government help. Should we need it. Second tick the party vote. Who has the policy that aligns with your principles the best? For a bit of fun and to get a potential surprise on exactly which party you align with best, try an online survey like www.votecompass. tvnz.co.nz Then there are the two referendum questions. End of life choice and legalise cannabis. Not exactly small decisions to make and very hard ones when not equipped with the knowledge to make an informed decision. Either way we the people of New Zealand need to cast our votes. Do not be a fence sitter and do nothing. Get out and vote this Saturday. Dog attacks on people in Queenstown Lakes have fallen dramatically over the past three years. Eight people were attacked in the 2019/20 financial year, compared with 20 in the 12 months before and 36 in 2017/18. And the severity of incidents has also decreased. There were no serious attacks last year, all eight incidents were minor. There had been four in 18/19 and two the year before that. But the number of dog attacks on animals is increasing. There were 53 attacks on animals in the 19/20 financial year - the 12 months to June 30 - and 9 of them were serious. There were 40 in 18/19, including 3 serious, and 32 in 17/18, including 7 serious ones. There was, however, only 1 incident of a dog worrying stock, down from 4 the previous year, and 5 the year before. Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) regulatory support coordinator Kacie English, in a report to council, says overall “the number of attacked has remained relatively similar” over the past two years, however, attacks on people have decreased 60%. More Queenstowners are keeping dogs as pets. There are now 5388 registered in the district, a 7.05% increase from the previous year, when there were 5033. That’s despite 360 dogs dying and 253 moving out of the district. “Despite this growth, the number of complaints are down from 1161 in 2018/19 to 1050 in 19/20.” The vast majority of complaints, 506, were about roaming dogs, while there were 164 complaints about barking, and just 17 about fouling.

Southern Lakes Swimming Club are fundraising for St Johns with a 24 hour swim
Between midday on Saturday 31st October and midday Sunday 1st November, club swimmers from SLSC have organised this 24 hour swimming event. We are collectively attempting to swim 10,000 lengths or 250km of Alpine Aqualand pool. Along with the public and our swimming community, every swimmer appreciates the services provided by St Johns and know that fundraising is vital to their organisation. We would like to raise at least $2500 (that’s $10 per km) for St John but the possibilities for donations are infinite. St John will be coming along with buckets for gold coin donations during the event. All our swimmers are keen to get involved and are asking their friends, families, colleagues and community to support them. We are also keen to involve local businesses who can help. We’ve set up a Give a Little page for donations. Only registered member swimmers will be permitted to swim whilst the pool is closed to the public during the night. Some supporters and the committee are planning to bring sleeping bags and camping mattresses and stay all night! We will have lifeguards throughout the event to ensure our swimmers safety and many of the committee are qualified First Aiders too. If anyone else would like to be there all night - please let us know. The swimmers can request an approximate time(s) they’d like to swim and we have a lane booked out for the whole 24 hours. If we overspill more than 8 per lane, we hope to be able to use other lanes - and of course at night the pool is exclusively ours! See you in the water! Action needed to reduce fire fuel risk on DOC land By Rob Stokes, Chairperson Federated Farmers High Country
The destruction at Lake Ohau should light a fire under DOC for immediate negotiations with farmers on a partnership approach to deal with uncontrolled vegetation on conservation land. We’re not even in the main fire risk season yet. This Ohau fire, with 1600 hectares and up to 50 homes and outbuildings turned to char, is but the latest red flag on a serious land management issue. Central Otago and High Country folk will remember the blaze at Pukaki Downs that ripped through nearly 3000ha of scrub and grassland, including DOC precincts, just five weeks earlier. For Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage to suggest this week that Federated Farmers was opportunistic in the wake of the Ohau blaze and just looking for free grazing was a cheap shot.. We have been warning about fire fuel loads on DOC land in the South Island for years. We have only been opportunistic in the sense that the near-miss to human lives, not to mention the stock loss and serious property damage from the October 3 fire, was a chance to finally get some traction with the department and the government on this issue. Farmers aren’t looking for ‘free’ anything. They operate commercial businesses and they’re looking for a partnership, with contracts, to try and reduce a serious risk to safety, private property and the environment. We’re also
putting at risk the lives of the professional and volunteer firefighters and pilots who work all hours to bring these wildfires under control. Federated Farmers recognises there are some areas of the DOC estate where it’s totally inappropriate to have livestock. But in less sensitive areas, low numbers of sheep or cattle can keep combustible grass, scrub and immature wilding pine levels down. Australia, the UK and the USA have learned this lesson but in New Zealand we seem to be going 180 degrees in the other direction. In fire risk areas of those other nations, authorities are inviting farmers to graze livestock on public land – in fact, in some places are paying them to do so.
Any grazing arrangement might only be for three months a year. What is the farmer supposed to do with the animals for the other nine months? That’s why it’s sensible to have long-term arrangements with land-owners immediately adjacent to DOC land, so there’s no costs trucking animals in and so on. We’ve told the government that Federated Farmers welcomes an opportunity to sit down with DOC for a sensible discussion on the practicalities of fire fuel loads on the public estate.
On her return from the Climate Smart Agriculture event in Bali last year, former Feds President Katie Milne pointed out that Spain had rejected pressure for reductions in livestock numbers after it was pointed out that with fewer livestock chewing down grass and bush in forested areas, the losses and costs of forest fires already equivalent to around 3% of Spain’s GDP would accelerate. For farmers, grazing adjacent DOC land can be more of a headache than a gain. Because the areas are not fenced, mustering is timeconsuming and the land is often such that the animals don’t put on much weight.

Queenstown Marathon expects 10,000-plus Organisers are forecasting a remarkable 10,000-plus turnout for the Queenstown Marathon, even though there are no runners coming from overseas. With just over 7 weeks to go until race day, November 21, New Zealanders have shown their keenness to take part. More than 9000 have already signed up for the four events - the full marathon, half, 10km and kids’ run.

Last week’s announcement that Auckland will join the rest of the country at Alert Level 1 from midnight tonight was music to the ears of the marathon organisers. Race Director Nicole Fairweather says the support is indicative of the love for the event and all the region has to offer. And she expects an influx of entries now that Auckland is headed to level one. This was the news we had been waiting for however, with Aucklanders now able to enter or make plans for a weekend away, safe in the knowledge they too will be in level one and not having to travel with level two restrictions.” “Entry numbers to this point are simply stunning and with just over 7 weeks until race-day, our forecast is that we will exceed 10,000 starters. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult emphasized just how important such an injection of spending will be to the wider local economy, with 65% of the current entries coming in from outside the Otago/Southland region. “In these tough times it is always heartening to see our favourite events, like the Marathon, coming back and giving our district a much-needed boost. Boult says. The 10,000 plus expected turnout compares favourably with previous editions of the event, with a record 12,500 entries in 2019 seeing organisers IRONMAN putting up the ‘full house’ signs.

Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. Oh dear, this publication has been caught out with two typos - I’m quite the grammar and spelling nerd, so there’s a great wave of shock and despair when I find one. Imagine my horror this week to be accused of cheating at the flower show, thanks to one of them, and for Anna Dow’s very beautiful and brave story to be sporting them as well. Excellent spotting by June Simpson who noticed I’d “bought” flowers for the show, not “brought”. It’s good to know local readers are so observant. Do keep reporting them and I will keep my superiors (actually my little brother and his pals) on their toes. Toes will be tapping at the weekend - there’s a fabulous tea dance happening at the Arrowtown Hall on Saturday night with the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra playing - fifty tickets have been made available for the public to come and swing (the dance sort of swing!) the night away from 6 - 11. It’s a fundraiser for the museum so it’s ladies a plate, men a crate and $50 a ticket.It’s election night, and what better way to spend the evening than this? There’s another fundraiser for the museum and this one also has an excellent twist - local celebrities have been asked (or locked in a room with no food or water until they agreed) to create an artwork for sale. I have been told I am a celebrity - a little mystifying as I am not glamorous, wealthy, or good at anything. I am particularly not good at art, so if there is someone you loathe, now could be the perfect time to add “Painting by Miranda for complaining neighbour” to your Christmas list. The proper artworks and mine will be on sale at the museum in early December.

The Colombian taste of home There have been some changes afoot at Habebes. Arepa Thursdays? Empanada Fridays? Some regulars have feared their favourite salad might be at risk.
It is a time-consuming effort to make these arepa pockets stuffed with corn, cheese, meat and/or veges. Both the arepas and the empanadas are gluten free
“We’re not changing” assures Amanda Malqueen, owner / operator of Habebes. The introduction of these new additions acts to ‘complement’ the original menu as well as service the personal needs for long-standing staff member, Tomas.
His living quarters did not suffice. He needed a commercial kitchen to do his Grandmama’s recipes justice. As restrictions started to lift and with the business experiencing some downtime, Amanda welcomed the notion for Tomas to sell his traditional foods once a week plus Empanadas at the Remarkables Markets.
Over lockdown, Tomas craved the authentic meals from his Colombian home. “I need a Latin flavour here”... “I can’t go home”. Food was the connection to his Grandmama. Tattooed to the underside of his arm, she played a pivotal role in his life. Teaching heritage through the love of food. “Everywhere, every day, every meal is arepas” he spoke while glazing over and transporting his mind back to Colombia.

“We’re not traditional middle eastern anyway” states Amanda “We’re a melting pot”. She believes Habebes is a representation of multi-cultural Queenstown food. Arts+Culture Queenstown Writers Festival: Tickets just Released Some of New Zealand’s best writers are giving their support to this year’s Queenstown Writers Festival. Literary superstars Dame Fiona Kidman and Witi Ihimaera will be joined by cartoonist/writer Tom Scott and Ockham New Zealand Book Award winner Becky Manawatu for the four-day event, which will be held in Queenstown from 5-8 November, 2020. Festival Chairperson Tanya Surrey says the trustees are thrilled to present their second festival after the success of the inaugural event last November and are sure the line-up will resonate with festival-goers. “Dame Fiona and Witi Ihimaera’s works are literary taonga. Tom Scott has excelled across many genres from cartooning to playwriting and Becky Manawatu is one of our most exciting new authors.” “It’s a privilege to be able to bring writers of this calibre to Queenstown to share their stories with local audiences.” Despite the challenges of presenting a festival against the backdrop of COVID- 19, the trustees committed to continue with the event. Calling it a celebration of words and writing, Ms Surrey said it’s hoped the festival will cement itself in the district’s cultural calendar. The Festival includes workshops on poetry and memoir writing alongside with sessions on crime writing, historical fiction, music with a talk by Shayne Carter and the launch of Emma Timmis’ children’s book, The Girl Who Ran Across Africa. Art News New Gallery Opening – M Gallery Author Information Tom Scott is one of New Zealand’s leading writers and illustrators. Famous for his weekly column and cartoon on politics in the 1970s and 1980s, he has won numerous awards. He also co-wrote the script for the film Footrot Flats: The Dog’s Tale with Murray Ball. His play The Daylight Atheist, about his father, has been a critical and commercial success. Tom’s most recent book Searching for Charlie explores the life of decorated war hero, Charles Upham, VC. Witi Ihimaera was born in Gisborne of Maori descent. He is a novelist, short fiction writer, playwright, filmmaker and editor. Witi Ihimaera was the first Maori to publish a novel published. Witi’s memoirs, Maori Boy and Native Son have been published in recent years. Navigating the Stars, his latest book, non-fiction, comes out this year. Dame Fiona Kidman is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated writers, having written over 30 books, including novels, short stories and poetry, and more than 60 television, film and radio scripts. Clutha District Mayor Bryan Cadogan organised the ‘Jobbortunities’ event as he recognised there were thousands of people struggling for work in Queenstown and many unfilled positions in South Otago. And there were plenty of opportunities for those willing to make the move. Forty employers from viticulture, horticulture, farming, meat processing and forestry set up stalls looking to fill positions. Otago University and various polytechs were also there, to provide info on study opportunities. Altogether, there were about 8000 opportunities. So, the numbers through the door were a little disappointing, Cadogan said, although employers had found the session very helpful.

At peak, they need around 1300 staff, but they’re short of about 300. “There’s a lot of competition for staff, so we’re very happy to pick up the numbers. Our wages are pretty good, well above average, but the problem is retention, especially with the commute.” On Friday, a visa information session was held in Queenstown for migrants. Cadogan said the session was overwhelmed, with people queuing out the door, but many went away disappointed, realising visa restrictions wouldn’t allow them to take up new jobs.

“It was a concern to see the angst among the foreign nationals,” Cadogan says. “To me, as an outsider looking in, there is no rhyme and reason. These people have been invited to our country ... some can stay, some can go, some burst into tears, some don’t. “The idea they’re taking jobs from Kiwis can’t be right. The main thing I see is an imbalance between the work available and all these wonderful foreign nationals actively looking for work, but not allowed to take the opportunities.” Amar Deep, 30, and wife Nethmi, attended Saturday’s event. The couple, from Mumbai in India, have been in Queenstown for five-and-a-half years. “I’m looking for work,” he says. “I used to work for a hotel and my visa is kind of bound to that, but I lost my job in June, so it has been difficult. We’re very thankful to Red Cross have helped us.
