Continuing the Lakes Weekly candidate guest editorial series, this week we hear from Jon Mitchell, Labour Party. A born and raised Queenstowner‌ What Queenstown needs from this election is effective representation in the next government. After too many years of being taken for granted, the region needs mature, reliable, and strong leadership from someone with a deep understanding of local issues. As your MP, I would be committed to supporting our communities and economy to get through the challenges of the COVID recovery. Currently we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to avoid returning to unmanaged growth and over-tourism. I support enabling economic diversification, sustainable development, and higher-value tourism and jobs. I also want to lock in better quality, truly affordable housing, as well as fit-forpurpose maternity services, mental health, and aged care services for all of our communities. Born and raised in Queenstown, when it was little more than a small rustic lakeside town with a short summer holiday season and beginnings of a ski industry, I have seen our communities go through constant waves of change. I am passionate about our people, environment, the delights of our communities, and our collective future. I left Queenstown in the 1980s to study geography and planning, and work in government agencies. Queenstown was home again in the early ‘90s, with three seasons in ski industry management, a season in North America, between summers here in backcountry tourism. I returned after the Canterbury earthquakes to emergency management at QLDC, while my wife worked as a nurse at the hospital.

We now have a rural property near Garston, within Queenstown’s expanding commuter belt, where we will soon build an off-grid home. We also have a small home in Wellington, close to my current central government disaster management day-job. Former mayor and MP, Warren Cooper, recently said whoever is elected here this year must be ready to hit the ground running. I have accumulated over 25 years’ experience in local and central government, community resilience, economic development, and disaster response and recovery leadership in New Zealand and elsewhere. I have proven my ability to work with people from all backgrounds, achieving more equitable and sustainable outcomes for communities I serve. I have become familiar from the inside with how Wellington and Queenstown tick, developing and improving policy and legislation, ensuring all interests are represented and listened to. These are key skills for any new MP to get the job done for their constituents. My emergency leadership experience brings added value at a time it is needed most. Over the past two decades I have been involved in developing plans, systems and leadership that our COVID response is based on, ensuring our communities and economy are safer than practically any other country. A summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Area misses the cut on next round of Infrastructure funding Queenstown will get no immediate help from the Government on its $151 million upgrade of the Events Centre, but is pushing ahead with other funded projects. The project missed out on post-Covid ‘Shovel Ready’ funding, as did the Wānaka Lakefront Development and the Cardrona Wastewater Pipeline Project and Wastewater Treatment scheme. Mayor Jim Boult says the council is still committed to delivering the projects and will look for other funding. He was also quick to reflect on the successful applications - stage one of the Queenstown CBD arterials road project and the CBD street upgrades. Boult says those projects, which collectively received $85m from the Government, will support 300 jobs in the district and simulate other private and public investments in the CBD. “We had obviously hoped for further good news but the scale of interest in this initiative demonstrates how important it is for the Government to keep investing in our nation’s economy,” Boult said. Consultation is underway on the 20-year Events Centre upgrade project. “Ultimately, the council is still committed to delivering these community assets and will continue to pursue any suitable funding opportunities to assist in doing so.” Queenstown Lakes District Council agreed a new alliance with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency last week to deliver the streets upgrade and arterial bypass, along with public transport focused upgrades on SH6 and SH6A, and stage 1 of the Wakatipu Active Travel Network. Combined, they will cost at least $230 million and will be delivered over the next few years.

The intent is to have the alliance set up before Christmas, in time to start the main construction of the street upgrades after the summer holiday period and detailed design on stage one of the bypass. The $60m street upgrades is funded by the Shovel Ready fund ($35m) and QLDC ($25m), while the $66m first stage of the arterial route is broken down into Shovel Ready Fund ($50m) and QLDC ($16m). The $90m improvements to SH6 and SH6A, including bus lanes, roundabouts and underpasses, are being funded through the New Zealand Upgrade Programme Package, and $14m was approved by Waka Kotahi to deliver stage one of the Wakatipu Active Travel Network. This includes walking and cycling routes from Jack’s Point to Frankton and from Lake Hayes Estate North through Frankton to Frankton Track.

Snow settling in Queenstown, roads closed

Aucklanders head for Queenstown

Heavy, thick snow is falling to lake level in Queenstown Monday morning as forecast.

Twenty flights landed at Queenstown Airport Sunday as the school holidays get underway.

More than 3cm has settled downtown and in some neighbourhoods before 10am

Some 13 are from Auckland with Queenstown set to be the third most popular destination for Aucklanders over the two-week break, behind Christchurch and Wellington.

The Crown Range, Ballarat Street and Lake Street are closed. Queenstown Lakes District Council is advising people to only travel for emergencies. The majority of flights into and out of Queenstown Airport have been cancelled. Schools are already closed for the holidays. The Remarkables skifield is also closed due to high winds preventing chair lift operations and creating low visibility on the access road. Coronet Peak finished its season yesterday. Downtown worker Stephanie Lacey says: "Honestly, it looks like one of those picturesque Christmas cards you get in Europe. "I'm annoyed that I live so close to town I've got to work, because I want to build a snowman." The council's 9.14am road update reads: "The decision has been made to close the Crown Range for the foreseeable future. We're also closing Ballarat Street in Queenstown. "A truck is stuck in the narrows along Queenstown-Glenorchy Road. "During this time, we'd recommend you only travel for emergency purposes only to stay safe and avoid any dangers on the roads at this time." The forecast is for high winds and increased snowfall throughout the day, and inclement weather will continue tomorrow. At The Remarks, there is 10cm of new snow on top of the 20cm of windaffected snow received yesterday.

That will be welcome news to the resort's businesses, with all the flights now able to be full after the Government removed the requirement for social distancing on planes. Auckland is still at Alert Level 2, however, and Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield told RNZ that Aucklanders should take Alert Level 2 restrictions with them as they travel. That was after an Auckland family infected with Covid-19 had a holiday in Taupo, before they had tested positive or were symptomatic, and met with a group of more than 10 people. The family were linked to the man who tested positive after completing managed isolation. Their contacts have been traced. Dr Bloomfield said people shouldn't fear Aucklanders, but should act if they themselves develop symptoms. "Even as we go into the school holidays … a reminder to Aucklanders – great they will be travelling around the country, and it's good we're in a position they can do that, just to be mindful," he told RNZ. "The advice to anyone – and this is how we've got on top of this – late last week a fellow from the flight, even though he had been right through managed isolation and tested negative twice, he developed symptoms, self-isolated and got tested. "So my plea is, for anyone around the country, if you do develop symptoms, do isolate, stay at home and get tested. That's how we will keep ahead of this virus." There have only been 10 new community cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand over the past two weeks. Ten of the flights are Air New Zealand flights, while three are Jetstar, which has returned to the domestic market. There are also 21 departures overall from Queenstown. Air New Zealand has more than 73,000 seats available in and out of Queenstown over the school holidays, operating at 125% compared to the same school holiday period last year.

Farewell to rent rise freeze: Advocates call for limit and better housing Rachel Thomas, Senior Reporter RNZ rachel.thomas@rnz.co.nz Tenants around the country are looking at rent increases of up to 30 percent as a freeze comes to an end, says a renters advocacy group. The government put a stop to rent increases from the start of the Covid-19 lockdown in March until today [September 25] - meaning landlords can now increase rental prices for the first time since the initial lockdown. On Parliament's lawn today, a small group from Renters United chanted "rent freeze, please don't go" and asked politicians to commit to supporting fairer rents and solutions to housing supply. Renters United's Ashok Jacob - who is facing a rent increase himself said some tenants were now facing rises of $100 per week. "People all over the country are saying that their rent is increasing by 20 or 30 percent as soon as the freeze is over - almost as if to make up the rent they could have increased [by] over the break. "We're agitating for an end to that kind of cruelty and inhumane treatment." In an open letter to politicians, the group says it wants to see the government build more state and community housing, and limit rent increases to inflation.

Queenstown's population boom Queenstown Lakes has been the fastest growing district in the country over the past five years, according to new figures from Stats NZ. The population skyrocketed an average of 7.1% per year from 2013 to 2019. That's an increase from 29,700 to 44,800 - some 15,100 people. NZ Stats population insights senior manager Brooke Theyers says migration has driven the growth in Queenstown and other regions. "[It] reflects the significant contribution of international migration to New Zealand’s overall population growth.” Statistic New Zealand released the population estimates today. They are the first to incorporate the 2018 census and 2018 post-enumeration survey (PES) results. The estimates back to 2013 have been revised as a result.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the government anticipated rent increases once the freeze ended, which was why the Residential Tenancies Act was updated under urgency to limit rental increases to once every 12 months. While she would not comment on the group's specific demands, she said the government made the changes with tenants in mind. "If they do see an increase, that will be the only increase over their tenancy that can happen in a 12-month period, and I think that's really important."

The population of New Zealand as a whole increased from 4,516,300 to 4,979,300 over the same five year period, and has this year surpassed 5 million. Queenstown's runaway growth is also reflected in the 20-year figures. Back in 1999, there were only 16,100 permanent residents in Queenstown, Wanaka and the surrounding towns in the district. The population has more than doubled in that time and if Queenstown Lakes District Council projections are correct, it will almost double again over the next 30 years, with 77,480 people living here by 2051. But it has some way to go before taking on the North Island.

The changes, introduced in August, also include a ban on rental bidding and 90-day no-cause terminations. Green Party co-leader James Shaw said those limits were a good start, but perhaps they had not gone far enough. "I'm appalled at some of the stories I've heard about increases that some of the landlords are planning to do. If we are going to get through this crisis I think people need to treat each other like human beings and just be a bit reasonable about what's going on here. "Frankly if some of the stories that we're hearing come to a reality then yes, we are going to need to look at other regulatory measures." The party announced today that it would work to increase availability of community housing, including rent-to-own properties, if it is elected to the next government. TOP candidate Jessica Hammond told the renters that they were suffering from an unfair tax system with no capital gains tax. "The average renter ... compared to 10 years ago, has to work another half a day every week just to cover the average rent. We can change this by fixing the tax system. That will address the rampant property demand that is fueling house price growth."

These regions – Auckland, Northland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty – collectively grew by 321,400, and are now home to 54 percent of New Zealand’s population. Auckland region had the largest population growth, increasing by 187,300 people from 1,493,200 in 2013 to 1,680,500 in 2019. This is equivalent to the population of Dunedin and Invercargill cities combined being added to Auckland over six years. Auckland’s average population growth rate was 2.0 percent a year.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I grew up as an army brat and we lived all over the world - I didn’t even know we had family apart from my siblings and parents and a faraway person called Granny who sent us knitted dolls’ clothes. It was a shock to discover that everyone at Arrowtown School had families - grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and it didn’t take very long to learn the family trees of the whole town - admittedly, the Daggs, Douglases and Dennisons made up the vast majority! Once I went to boarding school in Dunedin, I felt very left out - all the other girls got letters with money and stamps and presents from their grandparents. I’m even envious of my own children who grew up knowing all four of their grandparents, and they still have my parents alive and well. And I’m even more envious of Jacob Jacques who wowed us all playing his violin with his grandfather, Sir Michael Hill at a concert on Thursday night which raised thousands of dollars for the Greatest Needs charity. Honestly, that family really is amazing - they all seem to be brilliant at everything. When 12 year old Jacob told us he was playing a solo of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, he warned us that it would make us feel happy and sad at the same time. Too true - it was so moving and there was a lot of surreptitious wiping of tears. Huge thanks to the Hills and also to the Wakatipu Community Foundation who put the event together - everyone wins with events like this, and our community just gets stronger and stronger with all these great people and happenings. It’s good to go away every now and again to see all the great things happening in other parts of New Zealand too. Northland is so lush and green and everything is different - even the cafes seem to have different food. My darling husband looked in horror at the “Farmer’s Breakfast” he’d ordered which was all vegan - chickpea patties and raw vegetables - luckily he’d ordered a side of bacon and chorizo. I was very happy with dates stuffed with peanut butter and dipped in dark chocolate. Utterly delicious. Our friend had a lovely bunch of spring flowers from her garden - daffodils, clivia and proteas - it was a little bonfire of colour on her bench. I was shocked to discover a lot of wooden furniture gets crushed at the Glenda Drive rubbish depot as there’s no room for it in the charity shops. Yet another thing that gets me all hot and bothered. The Arrowtown Flower Show has set the hall ablaze - I was down there delivering my entries and bribing the judges and am so delighted they didn’t give in and cancel it because of Covid. If there’s one thing we all need more than ever, it’s a room packed full of flowers and happy people, and events are like this are what make communities work. A lovely boy called Ned helped doddery me carry in my boxes and fill out the stickers, and all the older, wiser gardeners helped me decide which classes best fitted the flowers I had bought (you are meant to read the programme BEFORE you pick your flowers). The Queenstown writers festival is getting close and the short story competition entries need to be in by Tuesday. 4-6 weeks wait. That was how long my husband was told it would take for him to be able to speak to someone in person in regards to what he was experiencing - or a phone call sooner. He chose not to bother. 4-6 weeks wait to see someone in person was also what I was told when I tried to arrange for him to get some urgent counselling - or a phone call sooner. I chose for him - the phone call sooner. The first call was never made by the counsellor, the second call, a week later, we missed. The final call, he chose not to take, and just two hours later - he made his final, wrong, and most devastating choice - and ended his life. 3 short weeks after that first appointment at the Doctors, it was literally that fast. And whilst there had been obvious signs of depression for a long time, no one could have ever imagined this as an outcome. There had been no formal diagnosis, no real attempt to seek treatment, nor to live a better, healthier, happier life, no talk about suicide at all. And then he was gone. Would an ‘in person’ call have helped? I don’t know. Would that phone conversation have helped? Again - I don’t know. But that’s not really the point - the point is, there was no alternate path or option that we could have taken, there was nothing else offered. 4-6 weeks wait to speak to someone in person was also what I was told in the days following his suicide - or a phone call sooner. I guess I must have looked particularly destroyed and in great need at that point because all of a sudden a lifeline - if you go private then we can arrange for an urgent appointment. Therapy is cathartic, healing and vital. It is so very expensive, which means that there will likely be an expiry date to it, which is a scary thought for me. My therapist is very busy, and getting time with her is like finding gold, precious and valued. A scarce resource, accessible to those who can afford it - that seems wrong. Why is mental health, and the devastating illness that is depression treated any differently to heart disease, cancer, diabetes? It is just another illness of part of the body. No one chooses to get any illness, ever. With those other illnesses - symptoms lead to tests, which lead to treatment, and in many instances health returns, and/ or can be managed effectively. Where is the conveyor belt of similar treatment for someone presenting with ill health of the mind? Where is the roadmap of actions, options and alternatives? Since my husbands death I have had to forge my own path ahead to healing. There is no suicide survivors support groups available. I have been told that should I want one, I will have to start it myself, the thought is exhausting. What I want, what I hope, is twofold. 1. That this region be resourced to meet the needs of its villagers, the need for mental health services in this town is great, the resource is scarce. That this resource be affordable for all, and that it be part of just the normal damn process for anyone presenting with mental health difficulties. And 2. that people with depression and other mental health challenges feel able to talk without fear of judgement, without shame. That anyone, at any stage on their mental health journey feels able to openly seek treatment, and assist others to do the same. My name is Anna Dow, my husbands name was Craig. If he were here today he would kick his own ass for being too stubborn to have asked for help - my hope is that anyone reading this doesn’t make this same tragic mistake. This current worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has instigated an environment whereby many people may find themselves battling feelings of depression and anxiety. For some, this is entirely new territory. People may not realise that food can support their mental health. A healthy body equals a healthy mind and therefore assists people on a track to happiness. There is prolific evidence looking at the connection between food and mood. Any colourful fruit and vegetable really does help to boost mood. We can also regulate our mood with diet, as there is a connection between what we eat and how we feel. Queenstown’s local Baskets of Blessing Charitable Trust volunteer group delights in rescuing food. All food previously destined for disposal is sorted, prepped and cooked into delicious nutritious meals. Upon distributing these meals to unsuspecting recipients, they provide practical support to the community meeting the most basic function of food onto tables. They simultaneously cater across the full nutritional spectrum in a sustainable manner. Baskets of Blessing Board Trustee, Ang Gibson says “Baskets of Blessing firmly believe through our provision of nutritious home-cooked meals, we are helping lower depression, anxiety and stress in our community”.“Caring and kindness is the foundation of Baskets of Blessing’s ethos for everyone involved. Covid19 has touched everyone in our community and through making anonymous nominations, we provide the vehicle for people to express that someone in your community does care.” Not only do the recipients of meal packages benefit from this charity groups contribution, previous recipients often return as volunteers paying it forward. Dr Amanda Foo Rylan, Life Coach from Your Life Live it, sees ‘Anxiety’ as the number one issue with people right now. “Anxiety is an emotion of the future”. Who can predict the FUTURE right now? It’s flip flopping all over the place. Headlines throw a bleak fish slap.

He’s right, if someone is proud of what they do for a living, they’ll bring it into the conversation without prompts. Some, might be doing deadbeat work just to get by. Selfworth shouldn’t be associated with your job. Identifying ourselves with what we do is a mental habit we have cultivated due to our obsession with work says Adam Chalmers, life coach from Awaken Intelligence. It’s a really crap question for right now because we have no idea of the wave of individual impacts these unusual times has caused, especially as we head into a recession. We’re all coping with this as best as we can. Dr Amanda Foo Rylan believes is an outdated ‘’90’s mindset’’. “What we do, is a material of you as a person’’... “What we do, is linear”. But perhaps its my internal dialogue that has a prick with the phrase. Maybe I should be interpret the question in another way. “What should I be doing?”

There is a great deal of value to be gained from completing the 20 minute survey. You not only help to inform and determine planning and funding decisions for the Council and social service providers in the district, but you also go into the draw to win one of five $250 prezzy cards! Insights from previous years showed 76% of participants were concerned with the impacts of climate change, which has been important in informing the Climate Action Plan. In addition, data has shown that around 24% of people had accessed mental health services in the previous 12 months, with some communities facing barriers to accessing key health services. This has led to improvements in Council’s own organisation, and is helping to advocate for better social services across the district. Understanding how people travel throughout the region has helped shape the work by the Way to Go transport group who are focused on creating a more resilient transport network and providing more options for how we’ll travel around Wakatipu in the future, including more opportunities for walking and cycling and public transport options. Findings on growth and tourism will help guide a Destination Management Plan being driven by Destination Queenstown and QLDC. Understanding what the big issues are informs future planning for when visitors return. More than 2,000 people took part last year. This year QLDC is hoping to build on that and is encouraging everyone from all walks of life to take part. Hearing from a mix of the community ensures the data accurately represents the make-up of the district and builds on the knowledge of previous years. Habebes means ‘much loved’ in Arabic, a translation so fitting for its loyal, local, lunch crowd. There is a lovely rapport between customer and salad server. Part of this harmonious relationship is their generous loyalty system that actually rewards the customer. It is something that owner/operator, Amanda Mulqueen, understands whole heartedly. She hates loyalty systems that never benefits the customer. She scoffs at schemes where you accumulate ‘1 cent for every purchase’. People who eat Habebes get rewarded. “For every $120 you spend you get $10 credit” explains Amanda. “Drink 9 coffee’s and get your 10th one free”. And Habebes is rewarding loyal customers daily. Dishing out an average of $90 worth of credit per day. Amanda knows of ‘regulars’ who eat Habebes 4 or 5 times a week. “It’s a healthy lunch you can eat everyday... People love it.” The system is straight forward, “There’s no need for cards” she adds. It allocates a number to a new member and stores them in the system; Amanda provides them with a physical sticker with that number on it. Arts+Culture Countdown to RenewArt 2020 We are on countdown to RenewArt 2020 and in just under two weeks we will be witnessing something truly quite extraordinary and the RenewArts production team is pretty amped to say the least! So what exactly is RenewArt 2020, in a nutshell it is a showcase of the creative talent amongst us. The project was conceived by Three Lakes Cultural Trust to celebrate the regeneration of the arts community in the wake of COVID-19 to highlight the extraordinary work produced locally by embracing the theme of ‘renewal.’

The Trust raised more than $180,000 to stage the ‘renewal’-themed creative showcase – which will see more than 100 local residents receive funding for their creative works to be displayed or performed at the free community events on October 9-10 (Queenstown) and October 16-17 (Wānaka). It is believed that nothing like this has taken place in our district for some time and with all good community events it takes an army of volunteers to help ensure the smooth running of such a showcase. An estimated 100 volunteers will be needed across the four days. The Trust last week launched a crowdfunding campaign via the Arts Council’s Boosted Platform to raise additional funding to help pay a Koha to the volunteers to say thank you for all their hard work. Through the Boosted campaign the Trust aims to raise $3000 but is really hoping that with the generosity of our community it could reach at least $5000. Boosted is an all-or-nothing arts crowdfunding platform dedicated to making art happen. Along with the 21 Visual artists, 91 performers, 6 stage staff, 5 art installers, 12 tech crew, 100 volunteers across 26 shifts, 2 Curators and 7 in the project team pulling it all together, RenewArt 2020 could not have happened without the generous support from key sponsors and supporters, Three Lakes Cultural Trust, Hugo Charitable Trust, Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Community Trust South, Creative NZ, Callis Trust and technical partners Tom Tom Productions. New alliance to deliver $230m projects

With $230 million of transport projects to deliver over the next few years, Queenstown's council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have agreed on a new alliance.

Popular take-outs vie for $26k in prizes

The projects include Queenstown Town Centre Street Upgrades, stage 1 of the Town Centre Arterial Road, public transport focused upgrades on SH6 and SH6A, and stage 1 of the Wakatipu Active Travel Network.

Four Queenstown businesses have been shortlisted for over $26,000 worth of Covid-19 recovery prizes, in a competition created by a local entrepreneur. Hospo Lifeline is created by FirstEATS – an online takeaway directory and community project by restaurant discovery website First Table. The national shortlist includes 20 restaurants, cafes, food stores and ‘hole in the wall’ eateries offering takeaway.

Council infrastructure boss Peter Hansby says: "It was important that we looked carefully at how to move forward, out of the planning phases and into the delivery of these projects.

FirstEATS founder Mat Weir - who's also behind First Table - says the competition highlights the challenges faced in recovery by many Kiwi eateries and reinforces why the community project was created – to help the hospitality industry. "Our entrants had to explain their circumstances, as well as state what they’re doing to bounce back and why they’re deserving of the prize," he says. "With entries received from all across the country, it has put a spotlight on the common struggles currently faced by those in the industry and why they need our kindness. "The most common challenges for business owners include operating with yo-yo-ing level restrictions and not knowing what the future holds – which leads to their ability to cover expenses and retain staff. It’s no small feat, and that’s why we’re looking forward to being able to support one business through the next stage."

"It was determined that an alliance model between QLDC [Queenstown Lakes District Council] and Waka Kotahi would allow us to achieve the integration and customer focus required to ensure the success of these projects for the community." Robyn Elston, Waka Kotahi senior manager System Design says the alliance will provide industry with certainty and ensure the suite of infrastructure projects had a lasting economic, social and positive environmental impact. "The benefits of this work won't end when the projects do. Residents and visitors will benefit from safer, more accessible places that offer real choice in how people get around. "The alliance will work closely with our partners and stakeholders and engage with them early. We will succeed when we all work together. "This programme will play a vital role in helping to stimulate the wider Wakatipu economy and support the region to recover from the effects of COVID-19."

A panel of judges will be reviewing the shortlisted entries over the coming days, with the winner being announced on September 30.

Industry has been advised with Advance Notice on the project with the Request for Proposal due to be issued at the end of this month.

Popular Queenstown outlets Habebes Cafe, Taco Medic, Erik's Fish and Chips, and Love Chicken are on the shortlist, along with eateries in Paihia, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch.

The intent is to have the alliance set up before Christmas, in time to start the main construction of the Town Centre Street Upgrades after the summer holiday period and detailed design on Stage 1 of the Town Centre Arterial project.

"Our industry judges will be ranking the applicants based on their individual needs, and how the support package will positively impact and assist their response to the effects of Covid-19,” says Mat. "We commend each and every business that took the time to enter Hospo Lifeline and those that made it this far. Every business is deserving in its own right, so it's going to be tough selecting our winner." The prize includes support for online marketing, branding, strategy, financial and subscriptions from FirstEATS, in partnership with Deloitte, Hype & Dexter, Xero, Restaurant Association of New Zealand, Not Another, The Hospitality Company, Loaded, Chomp, First Table and YEAH! LOCAL.

Projects • Jointly funded by the government’s Shovel Ready fund ($35m) and QLDC ($25m), Queenstown Town Centre Street Upgrades project will to transform Brecon Street, Rees Street, Beach Street, Park Street and Hotops Rise into slower speed, high quality public spaces that are safe, vibrant and accessible, weaving in local cultural storytelling. • Also from the Shovel Ready fund, the government is providing $50m towards delivering stage 1 of the Town Centre Arterial Road, supported by a further $16m local investment. The new road will be designed in a way that supports the removal of general traffic from Stanley Street, unlocking a range of other investments that will improve the town centre experience for locals and visitors. QLDC is currently seeking to designate the full route under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-Track Consenting) Act 2020. • The $90m New Zealand Upgrade Programme Package for Queenstown provides bus lanes and bus priority on SH6A, a new bus hub on SH6, improvements to the SH6a/SH6 intersection, a new roundabout at Howards Drive and an underpass at Ladies Mile to provide better walking and cycling connections. These improvements are part of the $6.8 billion New Zealand Upgrade Programme transport investment to improve travel choices and boost productivity in the country’s growth areas. • $14m was approved by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to deliver stage one of the Wakatipu Active Travel Network. This includes routes from Jack’s Point to Frankton and from Lake Hayes Estate North through Frankton to Frankton Track.

August Jobs Update The number of open jobs advertised is steadily rising again with August recording a total of 169 open roles. This is an additional 28 jobs than in July and up 41 jobs from June. To put that in context that’s up 19% and 32% respectively. It goes without saying that’s a world away from the 760 roles JobFix was advertising this time last year. There are also two broad sectors that are not seeing any let up in open roles. Firstly, and notably construction and transportation have remained in demand sectors for staff. Within the sector construction roles only dropped 6 roles year to year and transport only 16 roles. The sector has also had the largest number of roles available, a far cry from 2019 when both F&B-Hotel and the Retail-Tourism area far exceeded construction and transport in the roles available. The Food and Beverage-Hotel sector is coming back quickly with a 30% increase in available roles since July and a doubling sine June.

With Summer holiday roles growth soon to appear and the likelihood that business will staff up to take advantage of an expected bumper season we may very quickly see real problems again in actually FINDING staff.
