TOP stands for a fair society In the lead up to the General Election on October 17, The Lakes Weekly will run guest editorials from 3 Queenstown based candidates for the Southland Electorate, Jon Mitchell (Labour), Joseph Mooney (National), and starting things off this week, Joel Rowlands (TOP)… Gidday, my name is Joel Rowlands, and I am the Candidate for TOP – The Opportunities Party for the Southland Electorate. My grandmother was born and bred in Lumsden and I always remember her fond memories of getting on the Kingston Flyer then hopping on the Earnslaw and catching the boat to the campground. At the time there wasn’t much else in Queenstown Bay. It was these stories and memories that drew me to Queenstown. I came for a twoweek snowboarding holiday and have never left. Who would have thought a descendant of the Robertson’s from Lumsden would become a political candidate for the region 100 years later! I am passionate about the local community, mental health, the environment, and animal welfare. I really enjoy helping people anyway I can, especially those with mental health issues. After losing my mother a few years ago to depression/suicide, the system let her down, this is something very close to my heart and I can see this becoming a more widespread issue if the inequality between the haves and have-nots continues to grow. I’m renowned in the local area as a fair and responsive advisor on community issues, and I’ll stand up for what is right. I’m also pretty straight up, so I’m going to cut to the chase. I want you to vote for me in the 2020 General Election, and I want you to vote for TOP. I believe the future is TOP. TOP stands for a fair society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

A summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Queenstown businesses face at least another five months without Australian tourists, says the boss of Air New Zealand The airline’s chief executive Greg Foran told the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday he doesn’t expect a trans-Tasman bubble any time soon. “I certainly do not believe we will see anything across the Tasman this calendar year,” he told the Australian newspaper. “It’s hard to believe it would be before March next year and could well be longer. “If it comes back quicker, we’re going to pop some champagne.” The resurgence of Covid-19 in Victoria was a major blow to such a travel bubble, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said last month.

Cromwell, Otago – The Big Fruit Reserve in Cromwell will come alive this Sunday (27 September) as more than 100 craft and food stalls gather to celebrate spring at the Cromwell Spring Market.

Still, Queenstown businesses can expect a relatively healthy domestic school holidays after the Government removed the requirement for social distancing on aircraft, opening up more than 160,000 Air New Zealand seats around the country. Burnout to beat all burnouts A late afternoon and evening of tyre screeching, engine revving, exhaust bellowing and smoke billowing spectacle and excitement. What better way to celebrate the return to Level 1 than this Saturday (Sept 26) heading to Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell’s Sandflat Road for the burnout to beat all burnouts. “We’ve so many entries from all over the country, with most of these mindboggling purpose built burnout vehicles, we decided this rates being called the Central Motor Speedway NZ Burnout Champs 20/21,” explains speedway promoter Jason Scott. “As in previous years we’re running this meeting in the late afternoon and evening of the Alexandra Blossom Festival Grand Procession Saturday. As a speedway club we’ll be further supporting festival entertainment by participating in the parade which heads off down Centennial Ave at 11.45, led by heavy trucks. “Should the worst happen and Saturday remains at Level 2, the club has plans in place to meet crowd restrictions and social separation requirements. Our natural amphitheatre around the track enables us to create separate zones of 100 spectators in each. Depending on vehicles, some of these zones may further increase separation by people staying in their vehicles to watch the show. “As well as the burnout, Saturday will see plenty of on track action with good numbers of classes from sprint cars through six shooters, saloons, super saloons, stock cars, productions and youth ministocks pedal to the metal practising for an exciting season ahead. Employment, mental health and housing are the three main concerns of the Queenstown community post-Covid, a Salvation Army report has found. The Salvation Army interviewed 564 residents and conducted 14 interviews with key community leaders in Queenstown, Rotorua, Johnsonville for its State of our Communities Report, released today More than a third of Queenstowners identified employment and income as their main concern. More than half surveyed in the resort town said they'd lost household income, with one person saying their entire family had lost their jobs. They had to move elsewhere due to the lack of job prospects.

Finding a new job in Queenstown, with its depressed tourism economy, was incredibly difficult many respondents said. Mental health and unaffordable rent were other concerns. "Often Queenstown is seen as there being no need, people thinking everyone is ‘rich’," one respondent said. "I fear that mental health in particular is going to be a huge issue as, apart from [The Salvation Army] there is very little accessible social assistance and support.” People in all three communities raised major concerns around access to mental health services. Increased stress, anxiety and hardship has affected people’s mental health, including children and young people. When asked about the most important social issues for Election 2020, employment and incomes, housing and mental health services were issues most often named by respondents as their key concerns across all three communities.

Apartment block blaze in Queenstown Three people were taken to hospital after a huge fire in central Queenstown in the early hours of Saturday.

Ana Ika, Salvation Army Social Policy Advocate, said: "Any recovery and rebuilding effort from the impacts of Covid-19 must include local communities and address existing and emerging critical social and health issues, and also build on the strength already found in these communities.

The fire engulfed a two-storey apartment building on Huff St, near the old Wakatipu High School site, at about 2am. About 25 firefighters tackled the blaze and were on scene for more than six hours, the NZ Herald reports. They had extinguished the blaze within two hours and then stayed on the scene checking for hotspots and making the building safe. Seven people were treated at the scene, with three taken to hospital for minor to moderate injuries, including smoke inhalation. A fire investigator were on the scene Saturday. The blaze is not thought to be suspicious.

Queenstown's remote possibilities

Flood protection for top of the lake Work is underway to improve Glenorchy's flood resilience. More than 40 residents were evacuated from their homes in early February amid fears the town's flood bank would burst, as wet and wild weather brought flooding to much of the lower South Island. The flood bank held, although two houses and several streets were flooded by water from the Rees River which came over the top of the bank, after debris among willow trees surrounding the town caused a dam effect.

One of the suggestions for Queenstown to recover from Covid-19 was for it to become the working-from-home capital of the world. But a group of well-known business and events entrepreneurs is one step ahead of the curve. Trent Yeo, Scott Kennedy and DK are behind the inaugural Remote Together NZ festival, which launches in Queenstown this November. The 12-day festival will dive into all the aspects of a flexible workplace, focusing on how business and people can design the way the work to enhance their quality of life. Innovative thinkers from around Aotearoa and the world are due to speak at the festival and attend its many events, either in person or remotely.

The Otago Regional Council (ORC) is now working on a series of initiatives to protect vulnerable parts of the township and Emergency Management Otago is creating an evacuation plan. Councillor Bryan Scott, co-chair of ORC’s implementation committee, says measures include vegetation clearance, channel realignment to improve drainage from Lagoon Creek and the Rees River, an assessment of erosion on the Glenorchy floodbank, and an application to install a water level monitor in the Glenorchy Lagoon. "Staff are also investigating possible sites for a new flow gauging station on the Rees River, and the Emergency Management Otago team is developing a flood emergency evacuation plan with the help of a new staff member." Staff will monitor the performance of the realigned Rees River channel— particularly during moderate to high flows—and make adjustments if required.

Yeo, owner of Queenstown eco-tourism business ZipTrek Ecotours, says businesses and workers have made a seismic shift in 2020. "The future has crashed into the present over the last six months," he says. "It feels like we’ve fast-forwarded 10 years because the impacts of Covid-19 have forced us to reassess the future of our workplaces and make a quantum leap in remote working practices and mindsets. "While some businesses were already moving away from an ‘under one roof’ model to more of a ‘hub and spokes’ approach with co-working spaces and remote workers, many others have had to make the transition in a matter of days and weeks." Yeo believes Aotearoa has a great opportunity to be a global leader. "Our country is remote by nature but in terms of productivity, efficiency and lifestyle, we tick all the boxes. "We need to consider how we can use these advantages to proactively change the way we work and connect with others so that we don’t just survive, we thrive." The festival will run between 2-13 November and provide help to individuals and organisations at different stages of remote working, so they can redesign their workplaces and live their aspirations. A Facebook group has also been set up as a resource for remote workers in the Queenstown-Lakes area to connect, collaborate and champion the region becoming a business hub of the future. There are more than 40 online and in-person events to choose from at the festival, including workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, facilitated conversations, and networking events. It will explore five remote working themes: creativity and collaboration, productivity and tools, wellbeing and people, sustainability and regeneration, and space and place. It will ask how people can stay connected and create a community of support with more and more working remotely, and how people can make extra money on the side doing the things they love. And it will also focus on how businesses can benefit from the 'brain gain' as more Kiwis return home from overseas. Visit www.remotetogethernz.com to view the programme and to book tickets. Cr Scott said the ORC had been in communication with the Glenorchy community about the improvements and will provide monthly updates to the Glenorchy Community Association. ORC is developing, in collaboration with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and other communities and stakeholders, a long-term natural hazards adaptation strategy for the wider area at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, including Glenorchy. Many of the proposed short-term initiatives will assist preparation of the long-term strategy. This work acknowledges that natural hazards issues in the area must be considered in a strategic and holistic way that accounts for future climate change, multiple and cascading natural hazards and pressure for land-use intensification, Scott says.

While we all know that we live in the world’s top destination, right now is the perfect time for us to explore it, while the rest of the world can’t say hello and we are not swaming with visitors. We want to share some of our favorite places that are out of the bubble, but still close to home. The country has been declared the best in the world in most of the world’s leading travel publications and surveys many times over. Now we have the country to ourselves, if you are looking at a day trip or a few days exploring in our own backyard here are some of our favorite places. Hopefully, we are out of Level 2 so our domestic leisure travel can go back to ‘normal’ and our regional tourism destinations are ready to welcoming us. Between $7b and $9b was spent by Kiwis on overseas trips last year and with no international leisure travel in the foreseeable future, the tourism industry is hoping to capture some of this spending, but accepts a souring economy is a threat to this. We suspect that the summer holidays are going to be crazy busy so if you have some time, NOW is an amazing time to go. Every fortnight the Lakes Weekly will explore some amazing out of the bubble destinations. Kaka Point, The Catlins Enjoying a stunning seaside setting Kaka Point feels like a lovely little village. One of the Catlins prime surfing spots with sweeping sandy beaches, Kaka Point also has a beautiful bush walk. The truly remarkable Nugget Point with its wealth of wildlife is just up the road and there is also a brewery, old

fashioned pub and great function venue. While there call into the Point Café with its delicious “freshest of fresh” fish offerings. The Point is open from lunchtime through to 8pm in the evening. In the weekend bookings are recommended. Lake Hawea Lake Hawea is only 90 minutes to two hours in the car from Queenstown. With so much to explore and some incredible hikes for walkers of all persuasions why not spend a couple of days in the area. We recommend staying at The Camp - Lake Hawea which is one of New Zealand's little gems. Spacious, and set in the relaxed lakeside park with magnificent lake and mountain scenery. From tent sites to self-contained cottage accommodation. Bike hire and fishing rods available. You’ll love it. Grab a bike and cycle the Hawea river track toward Albertown. It’s an easy and beautiful ride. Te Anau As the front door to Fiordland and so close, we often forget Te Anau. Rather than racing through it to get somewhere else, visit Te Anau and explore the area. There is Manapouri and Doubtful on your doorstep. Te Anau has been growing and getting some great eateries recently and we’d recommend Radfords on The Lake to base yourself. Wake up to views of stunning Lake Te Anau & the Fiordland’s parks on your doorstep.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I took my first flight since lockdown this week and it’s such a weird new world. Everyone is silent at the airport with their masks on and it was eerie to cross the tarmac with low snow all over the mountains, and no other planes coming in or out. My first stop was Christchurch to be with my friend who was having major surgery. Covid means only one visitor at a time and only for a short while in the afternoon. I felt very lucky to have had surgery last year, when all my friends could wander in and out as they pleased. Even with such a short stay, I managed to see the beautiful Louise Henderson exhibition on in the Christchurch Art Gallery - if you’re anywhere near, it really is sensational. She was a Frenchwoman who moved to New Zealand and painted with all the greats. And the COCA gallery has the enormous Colin McCahon IAM painting if you feel like feeling small. Next stop was Auckland. I hadn’t travelled for so long that I’d forgotten the essential bit of travel which is taking all your documents - I have a little wallet with everything I need in it, so it was very annoying to discover it had stayed home without me. The lovely lady at the rental car office couldn’t give me a car without my licence, and the flight that was meant to be delivering my husband to me in Auckland had been cancelled. Would he get on the next flight? I took a taxi into town and pondered on the numerous difficulties my carlessness and husbandlessness might cause. Sometimes an excellent dinner with family and friends makes all the problems go away and by 10 pm, he was found wandering lonely as a cloud in a carpark many blocks from our restaurant. Huge relief. We stayed out at Muriwai with ex Queenstowners Sarah-Kate Lynch and Mark Robbins - they are both in the film industry and it was great to hear of all the exciting projects that are happening in New Zealand, and all the jobs that will be created from it. New Zealand’s covid-free status is definitely making it an attractive destination for filmmakers. In the morning we set off for a walk down to see the smelliest, noisiest New Zealanders - the gannet colony. Honestly , the pong and the chaos is extraordinary but it’s impossible to stop watching - they are not at all shy or fearful and they have huge domestic rows, and very unloving looking sex and then coo and snuggle up to their friends and neighbours while everyone sits on their nest watching it all. When it’s time for the babies to learn to fly, the parents have them fly their very first flight to Australia - talk about jumping off the deep end! From there we drove up to Mangawhai, passing by Alan Gibbs’ extraordinary sculpture park - there was a new one that looks like a cyclone that we could see from the road. If you look up Gibbs Farm , you can see some of the world’s most famous artists’ work - the giant red Anesh Kapoor trumpet which goes right through a hill is my favourite. He lets charities organise visiting days, so they can make a lot of money selling the tickets - if you ever get the chance, do go. We drove past roadside stalls selling avocados and lemons and all those other exotic wonders that just won’t grow at home. The warmth is lovely - it was 19 degrees yesterday and now I’m sitting looking out at the sea - but still very happy that I’ll be seeing my mountains next week.

THE ‘S’ WORD. A conversation with a survivor. By Lauren Prebble Since July 1, New Zealand Red Cross, working with the Department of Internal Affairs, has been providing humanitarian support to temporary visa holders suffering severe hardship due to COVID-19, via a programme called Visitor Care Manaaki Manuhiri. The programme was due to come to an end on 1 October, but it’s expected that it will be extended.

Warning: This story deals with the topic of suicide. “I never dreamed of making my suicide attempt publicly known” admits survivor Jason Medina. But when deciding to crack the world record of the most cliff jumps and raise funds for St Johns over Mental Health Week, this sparked media attention. It also opened the door to a delicate subject that has been closeted for sometime. “Not talking about the ‘S’ word, is not working” says Jason. He believes there’s a stigma around the subject here in New Zealand. A Kiwi culture of being pursed lipped. “I feel no shame... I survived this. It’s my mission to talk about it”. For Jason, it’s been a long and tumultuous battle with the illness. In the last 4 years he’s been in and out of rehab. 18 months ago, he had his most serious relapse yet. 10 to 15 minutes later and he would’ve been on the thin blue line. The words from his support counsellor at hospital, still rings in his ears. “What do you expect me to do, Jason? We’ve been here before”. Could those words act as a motivator for self betterment?

These are the up-to-date week 10 stats gathered throughout the Otago region since July 1st.

Since July 1st, Red Cross has given support to 800 people in Queenstown and Wanaka.

“Depends how your wired” says Jason frankly. In the dark times, he saw some serious flaws in the system; one of these was being home alone within 24 hours after his attempt. He further stressed the importance of safe detox beds to stay in when feeling vulnerable. “When an addict puts up their hand, you need to act fast”. “There are no suicide support groups (in the Southern Lakes), none that, I’m aware of”. He also believes there needs to be support with a mix of clinical experts and recovered survivors as staff. The survivors can become the mentors. During his recovery he spent 3 months at a campground in Piha. It was a non paid gig but the setting did start the process of healing. “I didn’t have to think”. It was in February that he returned to Queenstown. A turning point for Jason was accepting that he had an illness, that he was ‘fighting the invisible’.”It’s sneaky how you get there’’. He found his addiction to be ‘ego based’, driven by ‘people pleasing’. “Look at me, like me, approve of me” he sung in a sinister tune. “Social media and online dating have so much to answer for” says Jason. He’s realised how careful he needs to be with his inner dialogue and how this comes with practice. He refers to the mind audit as ‘thought-sheriffing’. The shedding of self and ‘getting back to basics’ has played a part in the mend.

This funding was possible through a support package for migrant workers by foreign minister Wintson Peters on June 16th - The funding is valued at $37.6 million.

Relating to the maori principles of ‘’Hauora’’ has offered Jason a multiple approach to his illness. Looking at the 4 pillars that make up wellbeing. ‘Finding a tribe’ and ‘learning to be with yourself’ have been positives factors for Jason living with an illness. “I’m committed to my recovery”. As we settle into a new covid reality, the number of people needing support (who never needed it before), has rapidly increased. 2020 Mental Wellbeing is dire topic of political concern. The District Health Board has not traditionally funded much in the way of talking therapies. But as of Monday 14th of September, Health Minister Chris Hipkins announced the beginning of a $16million rollout of youth specific services. 4 large contracts have been allocated, with SDHB being pegged for $3.2 million over the next two years. As it stands, New Zealand Association of Counsellors; President Christine Macfarlane, reported only 11 members in the Lakes Region and total membership of approximately 3,000 in ‘help agencies’. NZCA confirms that the demand is up and wait times are backed up.

Losing a job is traumatic, it not only affects our financial circumstances, it impacts our mental health. It can affect the way we view ourselves, our sense of worth, relationships, routines and our sense of purpose. We go into a period of uncertainty. It’s hard to make plans and often we have to let go of the plans we had. It’s important to share the feelings we are having and counselling is one way of doing this.

Stranded migrants Red Cross’ team has been working with people in the Wanaka/Queenstown area who are in desperate situations. People who have lost their jobs, have no money to buy food and no way of returning to their home countries due to border restrictions. Some have been living in their cars, vans or in tents through a cold winter. The programme is a temporary mechanism, at the end of which it is hoped people are able to return home or have secured alternative means of support.

Local support centers such as ‘Happiness House’ have felt that pinch. Their free help service (initiated in July) gave them access to a counsellor for 1 day a week. This has now extended to twice a week, looking after 55 clients (including repeats). The Trusts chair person Robyn Francis reported a 3-6 week wait for this service. Survivor, Jason Medina echoes similar wait times for therapists. Counsellor, therapist, doctor or coach? The range of talk therapists differ. Counsellors must be NZCA accredited and have a bachelor-level degree. Psychotherapists, by law, must be registered with the Psychotherapists Board of Aotearoa New Zealand. Psychiatrists are registered medical doctors and can prescribe medication. So, where does Life coaching come into this? Life coaching doesn’t need accreditation but nonetheless Dr Amanda Foo Ryland sought a diploma in Life Coaching and a Doctorate in Clinical Hypnotherapy and Past Life Regression over in New Castle. “Counselling is a model where people talk about how they feel” says Dr Amanda Foo Ryland - Life coach at Your Life Live it. The difference between life coaching and therapy tends to be the timeline. Therapy is insight-oriented while coaching is action-oriented. Foo Ryland explains that counsellors look at an outcome focus. Get their client to talk about the problem and stemmed where it from in the past. “It’s a longer process”. “We don’t just want to hear the story” says Dr Foo Ryland Life coaches are future focused and Dr Foo Ryland uses an NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) method of deleting behaviours. She calls it ‘Habit Hacking’ or likens it to ‘’deleting rubbish apps”. She wants to know “What do you want instead?”. She is one of 20 coaches from You Life Live it who operate their sessions solely online. There is no wait list because of this. She believes there are great benefits to the online model. “It easier for the client to relax in their own home”. ‘Anxiety’ was number one theme among her clients. She calls it ‘’covid induced’’. “We have, as a global community, have been thrown a curve ball”.

Creating your own Gardening ‘Microclimate’ I love living here in these mountains and the adventures of trying to grow food that comes with that. I’m writing this on the first day of spring, well that’s what it says but its currently snowing outside. I wonder if I should shift my spring start mind to the ‘Vernal Equinox’ around 21/22 September rather than the 1st. It’s a hard call when days earlier it was 22 degrees celcius on the last Saturday of August. Winters, however are definitely trending towards being warmer. This winter was a one of two halves. It felt very cold in June and July and then the subtropical August came along. Niwa confirmed this winter was the warmest on record. That said, I think we’re still a long way from Avocado’s and citrus orchards.

The extremes of weather lead me to the topic of creating your own gardening ‘Microclimate’. It’s a word I rattle on about all the time and rightly so, when we’ve had barmy winters days followed by harsh cold snaps with snow on the ground. So depending on the depth of your pocket, and possibly whether you’re renting or own a property or you have an allotment here’s 9 ways you can up spec your own microclimate to even out the highs and lows of the coming growing season.

1. Frost Cloth. With the use of homemade or store bought hoops it’s easy to cover a bed with frost cloth. Having a cloth changes the temperatures under the cloth by lifting it anywhere from 2 to 6 degrees warmer than the surrounding temperature. I also use frost cloth during the summer months to grow tender leafy greens, asian greens and some brassicas like broccoli. a) Build a frame and cover it with windbreak. b) Using up materials you’ve begged and borrowed, build a more permanent boxy structure. This will have the same effect as the frost cloth. It also has the added bonus of keeping white butterflies at bay in the summer months. 2. Cold Frames. Somewhere in the New Zealand gardening psyche we forgot all about semi permanent cold frames. Think box bed with a window on top that can be opened up during the heat of the day. Our gardening ancestors have been using these successfully for hundreds of years. A great way to get a head start on snowy spring mornings. 3. Raised your garden beds. The higher you come up, the further Jack frost has to climb to get to your veggies. The soil in raised beds also warms up quicker and the temperature of the soil is a key factor in seed germination. Raised beds in combination with the hoops, frost cloth and you will start seeing differences. 4. Black plastic. Old silage plastic or recycled builders’ black plastic can be used to heat up the soil. Push any mulch to the side, cover the bed with the black plastic and leave for a couple of weeks before removing and sowing seed directly.

5. Recycled glass house. There’s a lot of windows sitting around propped up against someone’s wall for a one daysomeday project. A great project for you would be to build yourself a glasshouse for next to nothing. You might even score a load of double glazed windows. Remember, you don’t need any glass on the south side, this could be a thermal mass of bricks or concrete of something similar to soak up the heat during the day and let it all out at night keeping your veggies a little toastier. 6. Tunnel house or glass house. These start to cost a few dollars but will be one of the best investments you make for your garden. Always go a little bigger and wider than you think you need. This space becomes one of your most productive. Great for growing tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, winter greens, early strawberries and so on. Thermal mass placed on the south side of a garden really makes a huge difference with random frosts that come out of nowhere during the season. This could be a gabion rock filled wall, or black/blue barrels of water, even a fence or a wall of a house. Plants that need extra heat like corn and pumpkins are ideal in these spaces. The western side of a tunnel house or glass house is perfect for a veggie bed. The bed receives reflective and radiant heat from the structure. It will be one of the last places you get a frost outside, great for those longer season frost tender growing plants. Lastly there is nothing quite like observation. Get outside on those cold frosty mornings, and see where is it warmer and where is it colder in your growing zone??

Open to all members of the community aged 18 and over, the survey will run until 5pm on Sunday, 11 October, 2020. The survey provides an opportunity to gain a snapshot into what life is like in the Queenstown Lakes District, what issues the community is facing, what people love about living here and their aspirations for the future. Queenstown Lakes District Council Senior Policy and Performance Advisor Katherine Davies developed the survey in conjunction with independent researchers, Versus Research, and various social services partners. “We’ve worked with our community partners to develop questions to help guide Council and social service decisions,” Mrs Davies said "More than 2,000 people participated in last year’s survey so building on this knowledge for the third year in a row is invaluable as a tool to support with planning and prioritising future funding needs." For the 2020 survey, the questions focus on the four aspects of community wellbeing - social, economic, environmental and cultural. “We’ve included many of the same questions as previous surveys so progress can be tracked year on year, along with a further focus on how COVID-19 has affected our communities. "This will be really important information to understand and track as work to support the district’s recovery evolves,” Mrs Davies said. The data from previous years has demonstrated peoples’ concern for climate change which has been important in informing the Climate Action Plan. In addition, data has shown that around 24% of people had accessed mental health services in the previous 12 months, with some communities facing barriers to accessing key health services. This data has been important in advocating for improved service provision for the district. This year the community will also have the opportunity to feed into the 2021-2031 Ten Year Plan, which is coming up early next year, through a second short questionnaire. QLDC Chief Executive Mike Theelen said the information collected is highly useful in identifying priority issues and projects, supporting planning processes and ensuring the right conversations are being had with the right people. “While the survey is focused on how life is right now, we are also keen to understand what people love about being here and what they would change about life in the district in the future,” he said. The timing of the Quality of Life Survey coincides with Mental Health Awareness week and Mr Theelen encouraged all parts of the community to take part to ensure the data accurately represents the make-up of the district. “We’re very conscious that COVID-19 disruptions will be front of mind for people as they respond to this year’s survey and that’s another reason why the feedback will be valuable. We need to know what the big issues are and where the need is greatest to help plan for a better tomorrow,” Mr Theelen said.
