Is a tech economy the answer? Take one look at house prices and social issues in San Francisco and the idea Queenstown should reinvent itself as the Silicon Valley of the southern hemisphere suddenly becomes much less appealing. The median house price in Silicon Valley is NZ$2 million, compared to Queenstown’s $1m, and a one-bedroom rental is NZ$1,261 a week - triple what people pay here. But, there is no doubt we need to diversify the economy from the lowwage, environmentally and socially-destructive industry that is mass tourism. We had all our eggs in one shonky blender, and Covid-19 hit the on button. It could be that Queenstown is uniquely positioned in New Zealand to handle the pressures of gentrification that a tech hub brings, after all, we’ve been struggling with affordable housing for more than a decade and are beginning to put some real solutions in place. They would need to be beefed up, with the excellent Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust given more and more backing and support, along with potentially rent-controlled developments and ring-fenced housing opportunities for key workers. Maybe in the coming decades we’ll see a decline in Airbnb as the properties are bought by tech workers happy to become a valuable part of Queenstown’s colourful community, while all those multi-million holiday homes which sit empty for much of the year are instead occupied by tech moguls who create opportunities and jobs, and not just tech jobs.

Tech conferences, for example, would bring fresh blood to town while supporting the currently-struggling local events and accommodation industry, like the Morgo Conference held here last week. It was somewhat controversial, as Aucklanders attended, following the letter of the Covidlevel 2.5 law, if not the spirit. That shows all industries will be affected by Covid restrictions, although perhaps none will be as heavily impacted as tourism. By 2022, all those holiday homes should be connected to ultrafast broadband too. UFB came to Queenstown CBD and other parts in 2016, but is still being rolled out to the suburbs and townships. Work begins connecting Lake Hayes Estate this month, while Arrowtown, Arthur’s Point, Jack’s Point are scheduled to be connected over the next year or two. Along with a burgeoning film industry, education sector and other highwage industries, tech companies could allow Queenstown to flourish with a more sustainable, circular economy, while still being bolstered by a manageable tourism industry. It will take some proactive planning, though, so we’re not asking “Siri, how do you close Pandora’s box?” Paul Taylor paul@qmg.co.nz

News Round Up A summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Queenstown skifields were given a boost at the start of spring with about 40cm in the past week Thousands of locals and domestic visitors, including those in town for Winter Pride, hit the slopes to take advantage of the new snow, after a couple of weeks of poor conditions. That meant full car parks before 9am some days at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, with long queues down into the basin. And more snow is forecast to fall this Wednesday, September 9. Yesterday, New Zealand Avalanche Advisory upgraded the Queenstown Lakes danger level to ‘considerable’. That’s three, on a scale of 1 (no rating) to 5 (extreme). It means there are dangerous avalanche conditions in high alpine areas above 1800 metres. “Careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route-finding and conservative decision-making essential”, it reads. The risk is moderate, however, in alpine areas from 1200m to 1800m. Coronet Peak tops out at 1,649m, while Single Cone is the highest peak in the Remarkables mountain range, at 2,319m. The NZSkimanaged skifields top out at lower elevations. And while avalanche conditions are mostly a concern to those backcountry skiing, wearing the right safety gear on skifields can save your life too. Queenstown snowboarder Acton Hill-Ford says he’d either be died or have suffered brain damage if he hadn’t been wearing a helmet when he crashed at The Remarks on Thursday,

He clipped some rocks and was sent cartwheeling into more rocks, which knocked him unconscious. “My helmet was caved in.” He broke a bone in his neck, and had some cuts and bruising to his head and back, and is expected to make a full recovery. He hopes his experience will encourage others to make the decision to wear a helmet, but wouldn’t want them to be compulsory. Hill-Ford wasn’t the only one counting his blessings last week. On the same day, a New Zealand backcountry skier survived a 400m fall down the west face of Mt Aspiring, north of Queenstown and west of Wanaka, landing on the glacier below. He was rescued by Wanaka SAR with leg injuries.

Funding boost for Lake Hayes Morgridge has also pledged money to the Queenstown Trails Trust and local schools. Wakatipu Community Foundation founder Jennifer Belmont says: "I am grateful to the Morgridge Family Foundation and The Nature Conservancy for this generous grant which will help restore and transform the ecology of Lake Hayes to its original beauty. "I am pleased that the Wakatipu Community Foundation could help facilitate such an impactful gift to our community." The Nature Conservancy Aotearoa New Zealand is thrilled that, thanks to the generosity of the Morgridge Family Foundation, it is able to partner with Friends of Lake Hayes to help restore the health of Lake Hayes.
An American philanthropist has splashed out $36,000 to help revitalise a stunning Queenstown lake. Carrie Morgridge and her team from the Morgridge Family Foundation spent four days visiting the Wakatipu Basin in February, hosted by the Wakatipu Community Foundation. MFF has now made the gant to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to help it address water quality issues at Lake Hayes. TNC will work with Friends of Lake Hayes to identify and plan the implementation of sediment and nutrient control mechanisms to improve the health of the lake. The condition of the lake has been declining for more than 20 years, with high nutrient levels causing algal blooms in the summer months, disrupting the lake's ecology. That's thought to be the result of decades of farmers in the catchment area adding fertilisers to their farmland, 'top-dressing' from aircraft. In 2019, Otago University scientists launched a $70,000 solarpowered monitoring buoy on the lake. It will takes water quality and meteorological readings every 15 minutes. Then in May, Friends of Lake Hayes chairman Mike Hanff lobbied the Otago Regional Council to increase the flow of water from the Arrow River and to decrease pollution by restoring wetlands and trapping sediment. There is now some funding for conservation efforts. "When the Morgridge Family Foundation (MFF) first visited New Zealand, the team was struck by the country's natural beauty," a comment from the MFF reads. "MFF is pleased to act as an accelerator between our longtime friend The Nature Conservancy and the grassroots community efforts of Arrowtown scientists to conserve Lake Hayes. "There's no doubting the great environmental impact these efforts will have. "MFF looks forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Wakatipu Community Foundation and sparking a spirit of philanthropy in Arrowtown and beyond." Morgridge's trip to Queenstown was prompted by her long-time friendship with locals Kristen and Marc Holtzman.
"We look forward to continuing TNC’s relationship with the Morgridge Family Foundation, and building new relationships with the Friends of Lake Hayes and the Lake Hayes community. "The lessons learned through this work will have important on-going benefits for the many waterways and communities throughout New Zealand facing similar issues."
Covid-19 visa extensions allow visitors, migrants more time Jo Moir, Political Reporter jo.moir@rnz.co.nz Visitors and temporary migrants stuck in New Zealand due to Covid-19 will have their visas extended to give them more time to organise flights home. Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi has announced those already in the country with visitor visas due to expire before the end of October will have their visa automatically extended for five months. Temporary migrants unable to leave due to international travel restrictions will receive a new two-month Covid-19 short-term visa, which will kick in when their current visa expires, he says. There are roughly 19,000 people in New Zealand who hold visitor visas that will be eligible for the automatic five-month extension. Faafoi says about 268,000 foreign nationals have departed New Zealand since March 2020. He says the changes are specifically to help those people already in New Zealand with no immediate option to return home. "Temporary migrants need to have a valid visa to remain lawfully in New Zealand, otherwise they are required to leave the country. "However, we know that international travel restrictions due to Covid-19 have affected many people's ability to leave New Zealand before their visas expire," Faafoi says. "These changes will provide visitors and other temporary migrants stranded in New Zealand with more certainty and time to organise travel arrangements home. The new two-month Covid-19 short-term visitor visa will help people reaching the end of their visitor, work, student or partnership visa who may not meet the criteria for another visa, and need time to arrange travel home, Faafoi says. "To be eligible for the Covid-19 short-term visitor visa, Immigration New Zealand must be satisfied visitor visa holders are genuinely unable to leave New Zealand as a result of Covid-19, they are intending to depart, and they meet normal good character requirements.
Kristen, one of the Wakatipu Community Foundation's trustees, was also inspired by Morgridge to launch the Queenstown chapter of Impact100, which will see one hundred women donate $1000 to a fund, with a $100,000 grant given to one local charity or not for profit.
"However, temporary migrants who choose to apply for the Covid-19 short-term visitor visa will not need to meet other usual visitor visa requirements, such as demonstrating that they have enough money to support their stay, having existing onward travel arrangements, or that they've met time limits for their stay in New Zealand," he says.

McClay was reacting to yesterday's confirmation of 26 loans to inbound tourism operators. More than 100 arts and cultural practitioners in the Queenstown Lakes District stand to benefit from the RenewArt initiative by the Three Lakes Cultural Trust.
They're part of the Government's $400 million Tourism Recovery Package, which has been criticised for funding select companies, including AJ Hackett and Skyline.
The Trust has today announced the 41 successful recipients of the RenewArt grants, who will now receive funding for their creative work to be displayed or performed at free community arts celebrations in Queenstown and Wanaka next month.
It also granted $1m to Queenstown's regional tourism organisation, Destination Queenstown.
The events will also bring an economic boost to the region by engaging a variety of local businesses, from venues to audio-visual and hire services.
"There are thousands and thousands of operators across every region of New Zealand who will be asking 'is that it' after the Government spends hundreds of millions of dollars, on fewer than 200 companies," McClay says.
Twenty visual artists and 21 performing arts groups – in total more than 100 local residents – will now have six weeks to create their works before the RenewArt creative community showcases are held on October 9-10 in Queenstown and October 16-17 in Wanaka. The events are proudly supported by the Hugo Charitable Trust.
"This is a slap in the face given the Minister of Tourism received briefings that outlined the scale of the threat to the sector.

"Whether it be the lack of process in announcing major funding grants to big businesses while leaving small operators in Queenstown and Waitomo with no support, or the bizarre attack on travel agents for not applying for a fund that they were ineligible to apply for, Kelvin Davis is yet to deliver a comprehensive plan to support tourism."
Three Lakes Cultural Trust general manager Jo Brown says the Trust was overwhelmed by the response after it called for applications in July. Artists had to submit a concept of what they would be creating and how it related to the theme of ‘renewal’. “The selection panellists were very impressed by the calibre of the applications and thought the breadth of visual media used was innovative and exciting, and the performing artists presented thoughtprovoking and engaging concepts. The panellists also expressed how confident they were about the cultural future of our region,” she says. “The RenewArt creative community showcase promises to be an enjoyable and entertaining event for the community while providing an opportunity to support the incredible artistic talent we have right here in our region. We understand that this is the first time an event like this, offering the work of so many different performing and visual artists, has ever taken place in our district and we are very excited to present it.” The idea behind RenewArt was to create uplifting events to be enjoyed by the entire district post-Covid-19, while also enabling a paid work opportunity for local artists. The Trust has secured commitments in excess of $180,000 to deliver the project and reward selected artists for their work. The RenewArt community events are supported by funding from the Hugo Charitable Trust, Three Lakes Cultural Trust, Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust South, Otago Community Trust and Creative New Zealand. RenewArt event details The RenewArt exhibitions will showcase the best of local visual arts alongside a variety of staged performances. Both events are free to the public and tickets will be available through Eventbrite from Thursday, September 10. "Government estimates show 92,000 jobs could be lost this year alone and that was before the Government’s border mismanagement locked New Zealand’s biggest city down again.
Twenty six Inbound Tour Operators (ITOs) have been approved for a $20 million loan scheme as part of the Government’s tourism recovery plan and support for businesses. "ITOs will play an important role in helping to rebuild visitation once borders re-open, by linking overseas wholesalers and travel sellers with New Zealand tourism businesses," Davis said. "These 26 ITOs have been assessed to be of strategic importance and provide coverage of key overseas markets." Tourism Recovery ministers have approved funding from the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme for 130 tourism assets. So far, 26 have been signed by the businesses, including four which operate in or from Queenstown. Iconic AJ Hackett Bungy received a $5.1m grant and can access the same amount in a loan if needed. Skyline Queenstown, Air Milford and JUCY Cruise all received a $500,000 grant and access to a $500,000 loan. Tourism Recovery Package The Government has committed $400 million to support the tourism industry to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The recovery package consists of: • $290.4 million for the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme (STAPP), which includes dedicated financial support to 130 tourism businesses, 31 Regional Tourism Organisations and 26 Inbound Tourism Operators. • $50 million for a Regional Events Fund, to stimulate the domestic visitor market • $17 million for the Tourism Transitions Programme, which provides support and advice to tourism businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19. • $10 million for Digital Capability, to help tourism businesses to develop digital strategies, access digital tools and benefit from existing digital enablement initiatives. • $10 million for NZ Māori Tourism, to support activities including training for young people and Māori tourism operators, business support and mentoring. • $25 million to the Department of Conservation, to offset the payment of tourism concession fees to DoC for the period of 1 March 2020 to June 2021.

Andrew the Ninja and ‘She’ll be right…’ by John Sparrow, Federated Farmers Territory Manager
Years ago, I arrived in New Zealand from a large dry stock farm in one of the hottest parts of southern Africa. The daily struggles on a farm in Africa included continuous drought, animal predation, disease and cattle rustling. So I felt I was tough enough to work in the Kiwi agricultural industry.
I worked with Andrew for many months, through calving, and found he was a man of few words. The struggles we experienced together that winter were eye openers for me. When we had completed a job or were battling to solve a problem Andrew always said “she’ll be right”.
I quickly learned there were different farming challenges here – not least New Zealand’s famous ‘four seasons in one day’. Otago and Southland farmers well know how cold it can get. I was yet to find out.
What Andrew taught me was tenacity. Nothing seemed to be too hard. He had a plan. He was able to fix anything that went wrong on the farm. A smart, tough bugger he was!
A few days after arriving, I was sent to assist on a large Rangataiki farm. Being mid-winter, I put on my thickest jersey and off I went, gloveless, and no jacket or boots. I arrived to horizontal sleet, a wind that nearly blew me off my feet, and a landscape devoid of any fellow human. In the distance I saw a motorcycle. When it finally got to me it was ridden by a Ninja. Yes! The being controlling the bike was wearing black, special boots and a balaclava that hid his face except for one teary eye. He pulled a glove off, stuck his hand out and said, “my name is Andrew”. So, my Ninja had a name…. I replied with “Good day, my name is John, it’s quite cold today isn’t it?” He looked at my blue face, purple hands and shivering chin and said “Yip, but she’ll be right”.
Over the last few years, still working with farmers, I have met hundreds of “Andrews” and I have come to realize that Andrew was the epitome of a Kiwi farmer. There are no doubt plenty of Andrews all over Southland and Otago. Throw adversity at a Kiwi farmer and often he will put his head down, mutter “she’ll be right” and get stuck in. Weather, adverse events, and ever-changing policies and regulations are over and above all the other hardships they front up to. Sometimes we come across something that we cannot fix ourselves. Those times when it’s hard to find the “she’ll be right” attitude and to drag your butt out of bed and put the Ninja suit on. That’s the time to speak to family or your mate and perhaps a call to Federated Farmers or RST. You will find someone who will listen and be able to help. I know, I have been there.
Thankfully, I have my own Ninja suit now and I have had to have quite a few cups of cement to “harden up”. I can proudly claim I may be a Ninja myself, one day… We will come through this COVID monster, knowing that farmers are the champions of the New Zealand economy. I hope the nay-sayers realise this. As an outsider looking in at New Zealand agriculture, I know “she’ll be alright” despite the adversity it currently faces. Why do I say this? Because it is driven by a bunch of tough, smart, and hardworking good buggers. Here’s to all the Andrews - thanks for your commitment to rural New Zealand.

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. Is there something wrong with me that I get so upset by the awful things that keep being done to our district? We have the most wonderful cycle trails network (3 million cheers for the Wakatipu Trails Trust) and the whole community loves being able to walk and bike everywhere. I often use Christine’s Hill which goes between Speargrass Flat Road and Millbrook(still aiming to get all the way UP on my bike one day - so far, it still requires some pushing). If you haven’t done it lately, go immediately to enjoy the beautiful views and sunshine. They are about to disappear if whoever has planted those THOUSANDS of trees has their way. I know we all love trees, but we certainly don’t want what look like nastily fast growing shelter belt things. On a very sunny day, the shade from even waist high plantings still kept the track covered in ice this week - it’s going to be the coldest, darkest trail once they get taller, especially in the mornings. Do walk it and understand what happens to the views once those trees are taller than you, then twice as tall - the Crown Range and Remarkables will totally disappear. Who has planted them? - please tell me so we can beg them to consider the community. Last week I got another nasty surprise - an email with a photo of some new and excitingly garish 30km signs littering Arrowtown. Not on the outskirts like those ENORMOUS ugly green ones saying 40km but right outside the miners’ cottages which are one of the most photographed bits of New Zealand. I immediately pushed “reply all” and suggested I chain myself to the signs and get Hilary Barry down to see them. I hadn’t realised that our very own mayor was on the email list, and he promptly replied saying that as soon as the museum provides alternative options, they will be used instead. My dream of being a pseudo suffragette has vanished…. But thank you, Jim!! Why can’t the green horrors have the same solution? I hate to think what all this unwanted, unnecessary signage costs. Very happy to offer my services as chief sign selector. There’d be none. She’s trying to keep it secret but Dorothy Browns Cinema is getting older - I think she’s lying about her age as I’m sure she opened her doors the year after the 1999 flood, but she’s claiming to be only 19 this year. Old birds just don’t want to face the truth…. anyway, whatever age you are, Dorothy, you are much adored and happiest of happies in your last year of being a teenager. And on the subject of not quite true things, I was talking to Justin Eden about a great hoax that was done in the 70s to celebrate the centenary of the Arrow Gold Rush - they painted a huge boulder gold, and dropped it in the river with a helicopter. Does anyone have a photo of this? It’s so lovely having Cath and Matt Hanna back here -as we all predicted, it hasn’t taken long for Cath to start something new - have a look at the Club Sandwich Company’s Facebook page - is there anything better than an excellent club sarnie? Make sure to visit Queenstown Contemporary for Spring Loaded - I’m not sure what’s caused it, but since lockdown, a lot of wonderful creativity has been bursting out all over the place. A whole raft of local artists using different media are putting their works on show on September 9th till October 2 . And on the same day, Jill Rothwell is launching her book “Against All Odds” at 6 pm at the museum. Jill found a suitcase full of letters telling the story of her family’s escape from the Nazis in Vienna to New Zealand - my lovely sister in law Kristin read it all in one hit and says it’s terrific.

Pride finds a way forward for how events can operate safely

Winter Pride director Martin King hopes the festival will act as a template for how the events industry can operate despite challenging Covid restrictions.
Prohibition was moved from the council-run Queenstown Memorial Centre to Loco Cantina, usually a backpacker bar, with the venue rethemed into a 1920s American ‘speak-easy’ bar.
About 1000 people travelled to Queenstown for the 10-day festival, which was held under level 2 restrictions and wrapped up Sunday.
“We got local dancers, singers and talent all engaged plus our normal talent, that’s been incredible. They’ve just loved the platform because no one else is organising these events.”
It usually attracts four times that many, including a couple of thousand from Australia, for a week of dancing, dinners, skiing, parades and cabaret.
King says he had some negativity that Aucklanders were coming to Queenstown for the event, particularly online and after Health Minister Chris Hipkins said Aucklanders should not be going to Queenstown for the Morgo tech conference.
But it has still been a “huge success” overall, says King, blending a ‘show must go on’ attitude with stringent safety and sanitary procedures, and, luckily, about half-a-season’s worth of snowfall since Tuesday. “It’s been beyond description in terms of what we had to do to get there,” he says. “We’ve had the Ministry of Health looking over our events over the last few days, Police, Worksafe have also been involved. “All of their comments have been consistently complimentary around our standards, our processes, the level of detail, our track and tracing, and checking in on events. “I’m hopeful the debrief from this will provide some really good case studies and templates that other event organisers can use.
Like the conference organiser, King says they were operating on the official guidance on the Covid-19 website. He pointed those who questioned the event on social media to the website. “I had some emails of people demanding information about our processes. I just replied that Worksafe, liquor licensing, police and Ministry of Health have all received them, approved them and are working with us to enforce them.” The overwhelming reception from Queenstown to the event has been positive, he says, and more than 100 businesses and organisations in the district have now signed up to the Pride Pledge.
“The world is going to be like this for a while, so the events industry needs to adapt like other businesses have.”
King says one of the highlights has been how dance parties have been adapted into cabaret shows, with double sessions of 100 people a time, separated by halfan-hour of cleaning in between. Photo: Winter Pride
“People still need to come together to build community, people need to connect socially, arts and culture and theatres and shows need to continue to be invested in. “Otherwise it will all die and what’s a world without all that. And what happens to the talent, the dancers and singers, if event organisers give up because it’s too hard.”

On September 17th, Jason Medina, will aim to break new records as he swings as many times as possible in a day to raise money and awareness for St Johns. The challenge started out as a spitball idea from two guys that had only met that morning and from there grew to the goal of raising $50,000 and setting a world record by completing up to 100 Canyon Swings by Medina himself. For Jason Medina, this is personal as St John helped him through his own mental health challenges “From the day that St. John was a part of saving my life, I have wanted to be able to give back in some way. and as he says ‘ he is jumping for everyone who needs help but doesn’t know where to start’. To reach the $50,000 goal, Jason and the team at Shotover Canyon Swing are looking for your help, to jump on board and sponsor each of his jumps. “I’m honoured to be able to be a part of this and humbled at all of the support thus far. I know that this is bigger than all of us and hope that our efforts will benefit St John locally and raise awareness that there is help to be had if you simply reach out and ask. Every day St Johns mission is to deliver the right care at the right time for New Zealander’s but doing that needs more than ambulances and highly trained ambulance officers. Arts+Culture Student artworks to be exhibited at Spring Loaded exhibition Q & A with Marc Blake Celebrating a new season and new art, Queenstown Contemporary’s Spring Loaded art exhibition starts this week (9th September – 2nd October).

The art gallery in 5 Mile, Frankton, has garnered a reputation for showcasing the diversity of visual arts in the region. The Spring Loaded event continues this theme, this time with the addition of 17 young artists from Wakatipu High School. The students’ works will be shown alongside works by more than 20 emerging and established artists. “There’s a full spectrum of ages and stages and a diverse range of mediums in this exhibition,” says Queenstown Contemporary artist and founding gallerist Marc Blake. “I’ve always wanted to do a group show with everyone together. The positive thing for the high school students is that they’ll get to see how a show like this operates – they’ll get to do something outside of the classroom.” What kinds of art can we expect at this show? ‘Spring Loaded’ is intended to be a big, playful and diverse snapshot of creativity in Queenstown. The exhibition will feature original paintings, photography, drawing, sculpture, jewellery, woodwork – basically the full gamut. There will be over a hundred pieces on show, ranging from students at Wakatipu High School, emerging artists, through to established professionals like Tony O’Keefe and Jessica Winchcombe. What does it mean for you to have the students involved? How important do you think it is, for these students, to have their art out there in ‘the real world’? I’ve had a constant dialogue going with the Arts Department at WHS since I judged their painting awards in 2019, they are fantastic teachers and their students are extremely talented and have consistently achieved at the highest national levels. I am always looking for ways to give senior art students a way to take their ideas and skills out of the classroom and into the world. Allowing them to create new work separate from their studies and show it publicly to their community, alongside local, professional artists of all ages is a wonderful opportunity for everyone. This experience is fundamental for students to gain not only art-making insights, but is hopefully also a way to begin to build skills towards any professional role down the line. We need to focus on building an industry with career pathways in Queenstown for students and adults alike to gain experience and employment in the arts. In topsy-turvy times, how good does it feel to be able to put a show on like this, to keep sharing the community’s creative work? It means everything to me to be able to put on community focussed shows any time and I have already done some of the biggest in our region, but it’s especially important during such a challenging period. I specifically sought and received funding from Creative NZ to do exactly this, because no one else could. We have an incredible pool of people here doing what they can for arts and artists, but our infrastructure is currently extremely outdated and inadequate. The owners of Five Mile have entrusted me with this incredible space to use, but it’s only temporary and when this is gone, there’s going to be a huge, gaping hole in the arts here. By the end of this year I will have shown the works of around 200 artists to thousands of locals and visitors and the demand has never been stronger. We simply have to find a way for something like this to continue. Is the artwork for sale? There will be lots of artworks for sale and this is a chance for you to not only find some beautiful pieces for your home, but is a way for you to directly support the artists living in your community. The show opens September 9 and runs until October 2, with the gallery open Wednesday to Sunday 10am - 4pm. Please come in and explore this wonderfully diverse show.
Art News Artists and performers chosen for $180k showcase More than 100 arts and cultural practitioners in the area stand to benefit from the RenewArt initiative by the Three Lakes Cultural Trust. The Trust has announced the 41 successful recipients of the RenewArt grants, who will now receive funding for their creative work to be displayed or performed at free community arts celebrations in Queenstown and Wanaka next month. Twenty visual artists and 21 performing arts groups – in total more than 100 local residents – will now have six weeks to create their works before the RenewArt creative community showcases are held on October 9-10 in Queenstown and October 16-17 in Wanaka.

We currently have a new and exciting opportunity for an experienced Office Assistant, to join our fantastic team on a part time basis: 20 hours per week Monday to Friday. About the Role This is a varied role, you will be based at the Copper Beach Centre and will be responsible for assisting the Manager and Team Leaders with the smooth running of a successful and busy centre. The key responsibilities will involve: • Office administration, such as: preparing accounts, invoicing, filling, maintaining records, data entry, photocopying & scanning, and ordering office supplies • Reception duties: greeting visitors, answering the phone and dealing with queries or taking messages • Looking after Daisy & Rupert, our resident Turtles • Providing classroom relief • Helping to keep the centre clean and tidy, by doing laundry, dishwasher, ad hoc cleaning up About You You will be a real team playing with a flexible, friendly and positive ‘roll up the sleeves’ attitude.
