Going Local Like most New Zealanders, my mindset has changed, and I have become much more aware of where I am spending my money. Out of every negative, like a closed border to the world, comes a positive, like holidaying locally and buying local. I would much prefer the money I spend goes to a locally owned and managed business or franchise, rather than offshore. It feels good to go local and it is the only way we can support our own economy. By narrowing the scope of the money-go-round to a back to basics barter chain whereby I spend my money with you, and you spend your money with me. Sounds simple enough, so long as you do not dig too deep into the definition of local. There are plenty of examples in the Wakatipu of highly valued employers, charitable contributors and over all worthy “local” citizens, who are multinational in ownership. Run locally by locals, in my mind is local. The South can survive without international tourism including the Aussie bubble if we keep it local in our spending habits. Obviously, the lack of Aucklanders hurt the economy, but our population is nearing a critical mass where it can support itself. We just need to do much more than pay lip service to the go local, shop local, support local mantra. It is hard to give up the online shopping habit but the shop keeper in Guangzhou is not going to return their profits to our local community. The shop keeper down the road will.

We can go a long way to being self-sufficient in the South Island which will prove to be rather handy in more than just Covid circumstances. The cut in direct flights between the South and Auckland has meant a huge disruption to freight services. Particularly fresh fruit and veg supply. Going into our first lockdown it was all about toilet paper and lack of flour and yeast for bread. Now it is about micro greens and cabbages. We could be living off frozen peas and local Pinot before too long. Not too bad when you add in Cardrona lamb and homemade mint sauce. Going local is a much more sustainable and feel good way to live. This is the positive out of the Covid negative. Seeing the yellow K-Jets chug out of Queenstown Bay with local families from all over the South. Hearing the tales of adventures our friends tell of recent holidays to Stewart Island and Riverton, Haast and Franz Josef. Seeing Arrowtown’s main street packed and all the bars and restaurants full. These are wonderful examples of locals reclaiming our local iconic tourism attractions. Why not? Get into it, go local and enjoy life. We cannot let Covid inconvenience get in the way of a good time. Help available for temporary visa holders
Queenstown’s ailing hospo industry could be supported through the coronavirus crash by taxpayer-funded dining out.
Red Cross is hosting weekly drop-in sessions for those on temporary visas who may be experiencing hardship due to COVID-19. Staff and volunteers will provide assistance to clients on how to apply for assistance online, answer questions and provide psychosocial support to those in need.
The New Zealand Restaurant Association is calling for a homegrown version of a UK initiative where the Government foots 50% of the bill of a meal eaten at a cafe, restaurant or pub, up to the value of $20.
Sessions run every Thursday from 10:30am to 11:30am at Malaghan House, 10 Memorial Street, Queenstown.

It will present a petition to Government on Tuesday, August 25, for its ‘Dine Out to Help Out’ scheme, which would run on quiet weekdays, rather than weekends. Some resort restaurateurs are lukewarm on the plans, however, as the latest Auckland lockdown brings into sharp focus how difficult the coming months are likely to be for the sector. Prime Restaurant owner Mark Jessop says: “I’m in two minds about it. “We certainly need assistance. We were 75% international and 25% domestic. Take Auckland out of the 25% and it doesn’t leave a hell of a lot. “But I don’t know if $20 a head is the way to go. I worry how it will be implemented, if there’ll be more paperwork and whether there will be enough people here to use it. “Any help is positive and it’s a decent concept, but a targeted wage subsidy would be better.” Fergburger General Manager Stephen Bradley said the latest lockdown has had a “very significant effect” and restaurants are “hanging on for the next school holidays”. But subsidised dining might not be the answer, especially as it could have a knock-on effect on weekends. “But it’s great we’re thinking of what we can do for restaurants, as we all know restaurants and tourism has been hit pretty bad, and we do have this issue of flat week days, because people regionally are only coming through on the weekends, from Invercargill, or Dunedin or Christchurch.” Bradley wants a sustainable form of support. “We all know we’ve got some massive issues coming. “ Restaurant Association CEO Marisa Bidois says the aim would be to make the scheme as simple for restaurateurs as possible, and the Association will continue to lobby for more targeted support. “We want targeted assistance for the hospitality industry, but we’re not being heard, so we keep coming up with ideas,” Bidois says. “We’ve asked for relief on commercial rent, or for restaurants to be able to deliver alcohol with meals. “This is another idea and by and large it’s been successful in the UK, providing a much-needed boost for revenue. We’d like to see something similar here. The hospitality sector has been hard hit, particularly in the regions and places like Queenstown.” By Friday, 1800 people had signed the petition, and it has been backed by many in Queenstown Lakes through the Association’s local branch, Bidois says. The scheme would run nationwide for a month, possibly October, and potentially cost about $27 million. The idea was savaged by the Taxpayers Union, with spokeman Jordan Williams labelling it “the most shameless, unprincipled, and disingenuous campaign from big food we’ve seen so far”. Williams said: “Every dollar the Government spends right now is borrowed from tomorrow’s generations.” But Bidois says the $11billion hospitality industry, which employs 133,000 people, has been largely forgotten. “Hospitality hasn’t had direct support like other industries, like racing, and there are small businesses with owners who have their houses on the line.“

hysteria around what is happening right now, that’s very unreasonable and unsafe. “Whenever we talk about suicide we need to be talking about suicide prevention. So we need to be talking about how we can stop this, not creating a story that says this is inevitable.” But Seymour defended his speech. “My job as a Member of Parliament is to hear people’s concerns and speak on their behalf,” he said. “After visiting Queenstown and having a number of people raise this issue with me, I felt it was the right thing to do to mention it in quite a long-ranging speech. Totally aware that we need to be very sensitive about when we talk about suicide and when we don’t. It’s a fine line for everyone to walk.” This story was first published by RNZ
Political ‘mileage’ Robinson said he was concerned suicide was being politicised close to the polling date, as it was at the last election. “You have to go by facts and not speculation,” he said.
The link between Covid-19 and higher suicide numbers first reared its head during the nationwide level 4 lockdown earlier this year. Provisional figures from the Chief Coroner, released yesterday, show the opposite is in fact true with year-on-year suicide numbers down as well as a marked drop during the months of the lockdown. However, the link has been drawn again since Auckland re-entered level 3 and the country moved to level 2.
“I think it’s really concerning that some of the speculation is coming from politicians during an election campaign. Trying to make election mileage out of suicide, quite frankly, that really sucks. That’s a low thing for people to be doing. “We’ve sent out advice to all MPs about how they can safely talk about suicide because the last election the same thing happened. There was a feeding frenzy on talking about suicide and frankly people often don’t understand, but the reality is, that will just increase the likelihood of people who are already suicidal attempting to take their lives.”
ACT Party leader David Seymour raised it during a speech in Parliament earlier this week. “The mental health of small-business owners driven to the brink of bankruptcy and beyond by lockdowns is immeasurable,” he told the House. “I was in Queenstown talking to people in that community a few weeks ago. They said they had had seven suicides in a fortnight - an outrage.” Those involved in the sector said those numbers were greatly exaggerated. The hard numbers would not be available for some time yet, but the chief coroner’s provisional figures showed a decline in suicides in the Southern District Health Board (DHB) region in 2020 along with the rest of the country. According to the numbers there were 54 suicides in the Southern DHB area between July 2019 and June 2020 - down on 57 during the same period the year before and 65 in 2018. The speculation prompted the Chief Coroner, Deborah Marshall, to address it. “Throughout this year there has been unhelpful and irresponsible public commentary on the effect Covid-19 would have on the suicide rate,” Judge Marshall said. “During the first lockdown period I said it was unhelpful to release figures for such a short time frame, as it is nearly impossible to draw sound conclusions, nor do I believe such public discourse is helpful to people in distress. “I’m encouraged by the work the Suicide Prevention Office has started and for the reliable, strong and hope-filled voice that director Carla na Nagara has added to the wider public discourse.” Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson said research showed drawing a link between increased societal distress and an ultimatum of suicide was harmful. “It put lives at risk,” he said. “There’s no doubt that financial hardship is one of a wide range of risk factors ... so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say we need to be careful and we need to put in place a lot of support and counter the risk that is raised by the financial hardship. Queenstown Lakes District councillor and the independent chair of the Southern DHB’s mental health and addiction network leadership group, John MacDonald, said there were mental health services available for those who needed them. “There are plenty of services available in Queenstown and yes there has been a lift in demand for those services in recent times, since we’ve come out of lockdown, but none of the services are overrun,” he said. “They aren’t available today or tomorrow, but they are available and there are other services in the wider district which can come in to support them via telehealth.” His advice for those in distress or suffering from anxiety was to reach out. “The first step for people should be to call the 1737 helpline, which is available 24 hours a day and has multiple languages available or go and see your GP,” MacDonald said. “We’re all in this together and it is uncharted waters. We just need to look after each other and help each other. The whole country is in this, it’s not just Queenstown.”
Arrowtown shortlisted for most beautiful small town Queenstown Salvation Army director of community ministries Andrew Wilson said the focus for the Salvation Army had shifted from meeting the “unprecedented levels for immediate welfare need” to social support. “We have a social support worker who does one-on-one sessions ... and she’s seen now a waiting list for her services. We’ve seen that also with our counsellors. The number of people wanting to access them is on the increase.”

Queenstown Airport returns profit despite Covid Queenstown Airport made $1.4 million more for the 2020 financial year than the previous year, even as coronavirus tanked the aviation industry. After tax, it generated $17,996,000 in profit for FY20, which ended on June 30, compared to $16,590,00 in FY19, demonstrating its solid financial performance before Covid struck, mostly in the fourth quarter of the financial year. Still, Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) slashed its dividend to its major shareholder Queenstown Lakes District Council by $4.7 million. QAC paid out $750,100 for FY20, compared to $5,472,000 the previous year, when growth and its impact on the town was its major concern. Both Queenstown and Wanaka airports were closed during the lockdown, while there is still no date for the return of international flights. QAC chairperson, Adrienne Young-Cooper said: “QAC went into FY20

Young-Cooper said: “One of the silver linings that ripples right through QAC and the wider community is the opportunity this gives us to reset our future, be innovative, collaborative and considered. “The board of directors is confident that the local community has the assets and capability required, through QAC, to provide the air transport infrastructure the region needs now and into the future.” Total income for the financial year was $46.7 million, representing a decrease of $3.0 million (6%) compared to the previous financial year. Profit for the year was up $1.4 million (8%). Operating earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) decreased by $3 million, or 9%, to $31.3 million. QAC declared an interim dividend of $1.0 million to its two shareholders QLDC (75.01%) and Auckland International Airport (24.99%) in line with the Company’s dividend policy. A final dividend was not declared for FY20 due to the impact of Covid-19. The Company’s investment in airfield and terminal infrastructure resulted in an increase in the cost of depreciation and funding costs. New capital investment during the financial year included implementation of the common-use self-serve (CUSS) check-in technology, runway maintenance works, seismic improvement works, noise mitigation activities and ongoing terminal improvements. The total assets at both Queenstown and Wanaka airports, including property, plant and equipment were $399 million as at the reporting date.

The annual report also confirms QAC has offered Remarkables Park Limited $18.4 million in compensation for the land known as ‘Lot 6’. It runs adjacent to the main runway, on the Remarkables Park side, and was the subject of a hard-fought decade-long court battle. The land was acquired late last year through the Public Works Act, after judges ruled it should be used for airport expansion. The compensation payment has been budgeted for, through QAC’s existing banking facilities. If RPL doesn’t accept the airport’s valuation, the value will be decided by a tribunal. A total of 1,870,619 passenger movements (arrivals and departures) were recorded at Queenstown Airport in FY20, a 19% decrease on the previous year, with international passenger movements down 11% to 583,219 and domestic passenger movements down 23% to 1,287,400. While there was a small growth in passenger numbers in the first half of the financial year compared with the previous year, the impact of COVID-19 in the second half of the financial year saw a major decline in passengers.

Aurora Energy plan to hike prices frustrates Queenstown Lakes residents Queenstown Lakes residents have slammed Aurora Energy plans to hike power prices, calling the power company untrustworthy, unreliable and even incompetent.
Queenstown Lakes District councillors met to vote on their draft submission, which called the investment plan unaffordable, detrimental to community wellbeing, and didn’t accurately reflect visitor demand, population growth or the inevitable economic and social impact of increased outages. Councillor Niamh Shaw was concerned by the investment plan. “There seems to be no accountability on Aurora as to how we have ended up in a situation where we’ve got a monopoly that is arguably insolvent that wants to pass on extensive charges to its customers.” The company has applied to the Commission to relax the limits on unplanned outages for the duration of the investment plan - which they breached and were fined close to $5 million in March. It was unacceptable for the breaches to continue, Shaw said. “I just think it reduces oversight even further to simply say ‘oh well, since this is already happening, let’s just relax the limits so they’re not in breach of them’.”
The company has applied to the Commerce Commission with its latest investment proposal, including plans to spend $383 million over the next three years - or $609m over five years - to address historic underinvestment. It owns and operates the poles lines and other electricity equipment, distributing power to about 90,000 homes, farms and businesses in Dunedin, Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes.
Councillor Glyn Lewers said the market’s regulator, the Electricity Authority, wanted the costs to fall where they lie - which would see Central Otago and Wanaka residents paying up to $10 more on their monthly power bill than Dunedin consumers. “I think we’ve got a very good argument to push to socialise this cost over the whole region. I think given the recent history of how we got into this situation ... that should be spread across the region, given the actions taken.”
Today the Commission held an online consultation for residents to have their say on the plan before the district council voted on their own submission in an extraordinary meeting.
In its feedback, councillors recommended Aurora should choose the fiveyear plan, find a viable way to reduce the financial impact of the district’s communities, reinvest some of its $5m fine into the community to help mitigate the price rise and establish an effective customer panel for Aurora to hear and engage more with the community’s voice.
For Wanaka and Queenstown residents, today’s consultation was a chance to air their concerns about Aurora Energy after in-person sessions were cancelled due to Covid-19.
Councillors voted unanimously to submit their feedback to the Commission and direct the council’s chief executive to share that with the Electricity Authority and seek a response.
The company’s plan is expected to cost residents across the region $20 to $30 more on their monthly power bill if the three-year proposal goes ahead.
Aurora Energy sent a written response, saying its formal consultation on the plan closed in January and that was then revised in June following further feedback from the community and other stakeholders.
That increases by another $5 to $6 a month for the last two years if the five-year plan is accepted.
“A consistent theme has been that customers agreed that essential work was necessary, but were concerned about the proposed price increase and we had those views clearly in mind as we finalised our proposal,” a spokesperson said.
Aurora Energy said the investment was needed to address historic underspend that has caused an increasing number of safety incidents and power outages. Associate Commissioner John Crawford said it was the Commerce Commission’s role to work out whether the investment was justified, was in the best interests of the community, and to set the reliability standards. “Ultimately we’re here because we all want the same thing and that’s for Aurora to fix its network for the long term, and make sure that this situation doesn’t happen again. Now we clearly have a role to play in getting the network fixed. But it’s not all encompassing, we don’t have a silver bullet and we don’t have all the answers,” Crawford said. “We want to be absolutely convinced that if we allow them to spend additional revenue that they’ve got the proper process in place to ensure that that additional revenue is spent efficiently and on the right things.” That was where he hoped residents could step in with their feedback. Steve Tilleyshort, a former Delta engineer - who was under contract for Aurora Energy - said she didn’t trust the directors and managers with money. “I think they’re incompetent to manage that money,” he said. The community wasn’t pleased with Aurora, Tilleyshort said. “I can’t overemphasise the lack of trust in Aurora. Their communication is arrogant and gets technical so it throws off members of the public very quickly.” Radio Central’s Shane Norton said the poor communication came to a head on Mother’s Day. “All the contractors turned up and took the power off for the main street of (Alexandra), Centennial Ave and surrounds, and Aurora hadn’t communicated to anybody that that would be happening. So you can imagine the cafe next door was one of their busiest days of the year,” Norton said. Workers packed up after realising no-one had been told about the outage - but it wasn’t the first time that had happened, he said.
“As part of the regulatory process, the Commerce Commission is now conducting its own consumer consultation. We are pleased to see the council intends to provide further feedback to the Commission. As rainbow flags were put up around Queenstown ahead of Winter Pride, festival director and co-owner Martin King was waiting to hear whether he could attend. Auckland-based King had already cancelled the LGBT annual festival once in 2020, refunding everyone’s tickets when New Zealand was placed in Alert Level 4 Covid lockdown. He reorganised the festival when restrictions were eased. The 10-day bash is due to begin this Friday. But, like 40% of the people who bought tickets for the rehashed festival, he would be unable to travel down to it from Auckland if the city was under the Alert Level 3 lockdown, while the rest of the country is at level 2. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was due to make an announcement on Monday, 24 August, about the alert levels, after the Lakes Weekly Bulletin went to press. King told LWB last week that the festival will go ahead, even if the country remains at level two. But it will be smaller if Auckland stays in lockdown. “There’s been a bit of a lack of understanding about why we’d push on with the festival under level two, even with seated events, and hygiene, and track and trace. “Why would we want to bring people together for Pride events in that climate. But it’s really simple, as a gay person, our Pride is your corner pub.”
King says whereas straight people can go to the pub with friends under alert level two, LGBT people can’t meet with others from the rainbow community openly in many places in New Zealand. “We’ve got people coming from every corner of New Zealand for the festival, every small town - from Kaitaia to Invercargill, Westport, Timaru, Gisborne, Palmerston North. “None of those places have gay bars and a lot of the bars you would go into on a day-to-day basis aren’t actually safe, not for you to truly be yourself. “So why Pride is so important in these times is it enables us to come together somewhere we feel safe, to meet up with friends and be who we are.” King highlights the fact LGBT people have the highest rates of suicide of any group in New Zealand, five times higher than the straight population. And 30% of LGBT people are in the closet in their workplaces, he says. “We’ve got marriage equality and strong laws, but homophobia, bullying and discrimination is alive and well. “So, Pride festivals are vital to improve the well-being in our community, especially in these times of isolation.” King had his fingers crossed that by Friday Aucklanders will be free to travel.
It has been rebuilt for the domestic market following the level four lockdown, with King planning for events under alert level two - with seated venues, social distancing, track and trace, and hygiene measures.
Ardern and her Cabinet reviewed the alert level last Friday, but she said there was no reason to upgrade or downgrade the alert levels before the initial end date of this Wednesday, August 26. They’ll give 48 hours’ notice of any change, hence another Cabinet review on Monday and then the announcement. It appears as if the outbreak has been contained to the Auckland cluster, however. “The key thing we’re hoping for now is that Auckland is at least in level two, so that Aucklanders can travel,” King said last week. “While 99% of events can happen if the whole country is at alert level two, it will be smaller if Auckland remains in level three lockdown.” As well as 40% of attendees, much of the talent, including DJs and other acts, is Auckland-based, along with King and his husband, who are hands-on organisers. The lockdown also causes flight disruptions. “It will be very frustrating and difficult, but we remain optimistic.” Winter Pride, which includes ski days, cabaret, night club parties, hikes, dinners, lunches and other events, usually welcomes 45% of its attendees from Australia, with 45% from New Zealand and the rest from everywhere else. Last year, more than 4000 guests attended the 50+ events over 10 days, while some 15,000 people turned out to Pride in the Park, making it the biggest free public Pride event in New Zealand.

So far, about 700 festival passes have been sold and around 1000 people are expected to attend, if Auckland comes out of lockdown. The festival is run on a tight budget, so when King committed to re-organising it for 2020, the tickets were made non-refundable. “The sentiment we’ve had is people are desperate to get away; this lockdown has emphasised that people need to take the opportunity when they can. “A lot of these people hadn’t been to Queenstown as part of the initial resurgence because they were coming for Pride. So, they want to come down, they want to go skiing, get out and do things, and if our Pride events are happening too, that’s the cherry on the cake.” Winter Pride runs from Friday 28th August to Sunday 6th September.

The Story of the Ugly Carrot Every day in Queenstown, between 500kg and 800kg of food is rescued. Saved from going to the dark pit of landfill by Lucy Deuble and her ‘mean green food saving machine’ which is also known as the KiwiHarvest van. Why – you may ask – does so much food (almost) go to waste in our town? Well, let us tell you a little story about the ugly carrot. About a year ago a local farmer had one tonne of organically grown carrots that had developed something called ‘carrot rust’. Don’t be nervous to Google this one, it’s just a bit of discolouration on the carrots. Along with ‘rust’, some of the carrots had grown a little wonky. This may not seem like a big deal as the carrots were still full of nutrients and deliciousness, but the farmer was distraught. He knew none of the supermarkets would buy his carrots. The farmer had a couple of options; he could go through the tonne of carrots to select the good ones (too time consuming and costly), or he could dig a big hole in his field and bury them – bye bye carrots. Unfortunately, this is sometimes the reality of food waste.

When we walk through the produce aisles, we look for the shiniest apple, the most vibrant mandarin, and the straightest carrot. We are looking for what we think is the best, but what that is telling the supermarkets and growers is that we can’t look past appearances to value the nutritional benefits of our food. Here is your challenge. Next time you’re buying your fruit & veg, go for the ugly carrot. We promise it will taste just as good as the perfect-looking one. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
It’s been a big week in our household and my poor husband woke up to find a naked 60 year old woman in his bed - he was pretty shocked, given that the woman he’d married had been considerably younger than that. I’d specifically said I didn’t want a birthday party as four of our five children weren’t able to be here, and I wanted to wait till our borders were open so that everyone could come. As ever, he took ZERO notice and the quiet family dinner (my family don’t actually do quiet anything) I had expected, turned out to be a huge surprise bash at our house with friends from everywhere except Auckland. I am still stunned that he could have got it all organised without snoopy me finding out and I hate to say it, but he was absolutely right - it was the perfect way to celebrate. The too short life of the very witty, wicked Ben Calvert was celebrated on Friday afternoon at Lake Hayes - such a genius but he’d battled with booze for years. He’d have loved the party in his honour - his daughter Bea’s singing showed us (as if we didn’t already know) how talented everyone in this family is, and the speeches were very funny, blunt and honest. We’ll all miss the man he was, and not the person the alcohol created. There’s another huge bash happening soon - look up https://shop-cansoc. org.nz/ - a chance to dust off your tiaras and dancing shoes for a masked ball - it’s going to be fabulous.If anyone wants to join our table, just book your tickets and let me know so I can put my great interfering nose into the seating plan. Last year’s Cancer Society ball was absolutely brilliant, and this one is going to be even bigger and better and don’t we all need a glittery, glamorous night? We most certainly do. I managed to get a whole lot of glittery glamour of the outdoor variety this week. I’ve always wanted to ski the Tasman glacier and Charlie Hobbs (mtcook.com) rang me at short notice to say the weather and snow were perfect and there was room for five of us. If you’ve never been, you have missed one of the world’s great wonders. He took us through magnificent ice caves and led us on a couple of 10 km long runs on huge, wide fields of powder snow that made us look and feel like superstar skiiers. Lovely local boy Ollie Dowling was his 2IC and they made this gaggle of yackety birds have the best day of our lives. We’d driven to Mount Cook at 6 am and watched our spectacular bit of the world wake up - it’s a magic time of day... until we got to Tarras where it was thick fog and quite obviously an excellent place for an airport. From the top of the Lindis onward, it was clear and glorious again. Have any of the Christchurch airport experts been to Tarras? Here’s hoping the bad weather forecast for the week comes true - I’ve got mountains of books to read and mountains of ironing to do, and a whole slew of new movies at Dorothy Browns to watch - I saw the Israeli film “God of the Piano” which is so good - I thought I was a pushy mother, but this mama takes the cake. And the music is terrific.
COMMUNITY NOTES Daffodil Day turns 30 - Cancer Society Demand Increases Since the first Daffodil Day in 1990, the yearly rate of cancer incidence has doubled, and it’s expected to climb further. “Every day, 60 New Zealanders will find out they have cancer. With demand for the Cancer Society’s services increasing, support is needed more than ever. Daffodil Day symbolises hope and inspires communities to come together to support people living with cancer” says Bob King, Acting CE of the Cancer Society, Otago and Southland Division. Shelley Gerken was told she had cancer in February 2020 and shares her story with us. “That’s not normal Shelley” are words that will stick in my head for the rest of my life. I was perimenopausal and had experienced heavy bleeding for 18 months, which I thought was normal until I haemorrhaged. My GP did full bloods and referred me for an ultrasound the next day. My GP phoned me; there was something abnormal in my uterus and in one ovary. I was referred to a gynaecologist and underwent a biopsy and smear with an appointment the next day for a CT scan. The results revealed a tumour the size of an orange in my uterus. The rest of the meeting is a BLURRRRRR. My husband was there, fortunately, to retain the information because when I heard the “C” word, I went into shock.
During lockdown, I attended many appointments with no support person allowed. The endless questions, radiation, blood tests, a PICC line and 2-3 chemo cycles by myself was scary. My Motto is to ‘kick this sh...t to the curb’ and so I attended my first chemo round in steel-cap- boots, having spent hours wearing them to help build our new home in the last 18 months. Once everyone returned to semi normality after lockdown, I spent a lot of hours home alone with our new puppy, a great distraction for our family. Creating Diamond Dotz paintings also helped to fill in the days. Meeting with my counsellor has been beneficial to talk through the rollercoaster of emotions. When people ask, “how long have you been sick?”. I say, “I haven’t been sick” and still struggle with the realisation that I have cancer and that I am losing my hair due to chemo. I look forward to the “LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER” class run at the Cancer Society. I’ve lost my eyebrows, so can’t wait to learn to draw myself new ones. I am also creating a heart wall. So far, I have 22 hearts hanging to acknowledge each procedure and treatment I have had.
Driving home, I remember being angry and screaming in the car. How could I have all these tumours, plus cancerous fluid around my liver, from what I thought was just early menopause! I was 47 years old and hadn’t been feeling unwell. My husband and I were flown to Christchurch the day before Covid-19 lockdown. Being the only passengers, it was like our own private jet. The Christchurch Women’s Hospital told me I had stage four Carcinoma Sarcoma of the Endometrium. My world collapsed that day. Covid-19 lockdown toilet paper fiascos didn’t mean much to me! I decided I was going to fight this boots ‘n’ all and be as positive as I could. I had a one-off radiation treatment to stop my bleeding and then three rounds of chemo. My Oncologist told me I would lose my hair, so I decided to take control of this one thing.
Three rounds of chemo showed a significant reduction to the tumour, but I need a further three. The Cancer Society has been invaluable, along with my GP, Women’s Health and the Oncology Team. Thank you to you all for your love, support and encouragement, especially my family and friends who have been incredible. I shall fight on.

Celebrating 30 years of Daffodil Day volunteering For 30 years volunteers have been the heart and soul of Daffodil Day. Since 1990, large numbers of people in our communities have coordinated Daffodil Day sites in their local areas to help the Cancer Society raise vital funds. Today we highlight Isabel Anderson as one volunteer, amongst many, who has been involved with Daffodil Day from the very beginning. Isabel began fundraising for the Cancer Society in 1989 when her Mum was sick. She recalls the day she was asked if she wanted to be an East Otago Coordinator as the Cancer Society was “planning to organise an annual fundraising day called Daffodil Day”. “I said yes, and the next thing I knew I was distributing collection buckets and daffodils, running a site in Palmerston on the day and then collecting all the buckets and banking it the following week!” It soon became apparent to Isabel that more help was needed. “It was school holidays, so I enlisted the help of my 13-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter” remembers Isabel. “We had fresh daffodils and metal badges to sell, and my husband took a day’s leave to count the money with the local bank manager. Hubby ended up making soup and bringing it down to us regularly during the day as it was the coldest Daffodil Day I have experienced, with sleet, hail and a strong southerly all day.” For the next few years, the Anderson family coped but were grateful when friends began to offer to help. Isabel soon had a full roster of volunteers. In 2004 the first Daffodil Day Bear, Albert was introduced with great success. Over the years, Isabel has sold all sorts of official and locally donated merchandise - badges, tea towels, t-shirts, soaps, even pottery. “The takings for my area improved every year, increasing from about $200+ to a few thousand dollars in recent years.” As the scale and popularity of Daffodil Day increased, Isabel’s original fundraising area was split across several volunteer area coordinators. Isabel is still very active in all aspects of Daffodil Day, helping with pre-sales, bunching and deliveries. Thirty years on and Isabel and her colleagues show no sign of waning in their commitment to helping us fundraise for Daffodil Day. We want to thank Isabel and those who spend months each year coordinating their area, for continuing to support our work in Otago & Southland.
